Meningitis mystery Health officials work to identify strain that claimed student By Jennifer Lang It may never be determined which strain of bacterial meningitis claimed the life of Clayton Heights Secondary student Brandon Kurtz last week. As of Tuesday, no new cases of the infection had been reported, Fraser Health Authority spokesman Roy Thorpe-Dorward said. Officials hadn’t confirmed the diagnosis, but hadn’t given up on identifying the precise strain. It’s possible antibiotics used to treat the ailing 15-year-old may have killed off enough of the bacteria to preclude an identification. “Nobody’s doubting that it’s a bacterial meningococcal infection,” ThorpeDorward said. “But it might be impossible to get an identification of the kind or strain.” Students, parents and guardians, and staff at the Cloverdale-area high school received a letter last week explaining one of their classmates had passed away and that meningitis was the suspected cause. Fraser Health does not believe there is a risk to the general student population at Clayton Heights, or the public at large. “People shouldn’t be alarmed,” Thorpe-
Dorward said. “All the steps are being followed.” Public health nurses have now completed the task of administering preventative antibiotics to those who were known to have been in close contact with the student. The bacteria is spread by direct contact with the saliva of an infected person, such as sharing a water bottle or a musical instrument. Anyone in close contact with the boy between Sept. 8 and 19 and who has not yet gotten in touch with health officials is asked to contact the Cloverdale Public Health Unit at 604-575-5100 or HealthLinkBC at 811. Meningitis is an infection of the fluid that surrounds the spinal cord and brain, and can affect the lining of the brain or cause a blood infection. It can lead to brain damage or death. The symptoms are flu-like and may include fever, a severe headache, stiff neck, nausea, confusion, vomiting, sensitivity to bright lights or a bruise-like rash. About 10 per cent of people who develop the disease die, according to Health Canada. - With files from Sheila Reynolds, Black Press

Local students rally support for the cause of pediatric cancers By Jennifer Lang To the shouts and cheers of students, Zion Lutheran School principal John Mayan got what might be his closest shave in years. “I have two words,” he said, addressing the crowd gathered in the school’s gym Sept. 22. “Bald is beautiful.” Mayan was one of two dozen people – many of them Grade 7 students who’d raised at least $100 each in donations – agreeing to lose their locks as part of Shave for the Brave. Well, how did it feel to be bald? “Colder,” said student Nicholas Houghton, moments after parting ways with his blond curls, thanks to mom Claire on razor duty. He “just felt like doing it,” he added. “It would have felt wrong to just stay in the crowd.” Aaron Nuessler, a Grade 3 student who was diagnosed with cancer in August, was able to watch from BC Childrens’ Hospital via Skype. Aaron’s Opa Hans Baarschers also went under the razor, thrusting his hands in the air in triumph after it was done, eliciting cheers from the crowd. Two days before the event, Zion Lutheran Church secretary Linda Peters decided she would take the hair plunge, provided she raised $200 in donations. “She raised $2,000,” her daughter Shannon said. “It’s once in a lifetime,” Linda explained, adding the first two weeks after the shave were probably going to be the hardest in terms of adjustment. Shave for the Brave was a school fundraiser in support of the Canadian Cancer Society’s Cops for Cancer Tour de Valley campaign, which visited Zion Lutheran School the next morning. Law enforcement officials and emergency services personnel ride to fight pediatric cancers.

The new modular classroom at Martha Currie Elementary school should be ready for students to move in by the end of the month. Martha Currie, located at 5811 184 Street, is also the focus of renovations in a wing of the school to provide additional classroom space. The Surrey School District is completing or in the midst of completing a number of capital projects to accommodate the move to fullday kindergarten. Those capital projects include 26 modular classrooms at 18 different schools, and 32 new classrooms in six additions at A.J. McLellan in Cloverdale, Hazelgrove Elementary in Clayton, and at Cambridge, Chimney Hill, Hillcrest and T.E. Scott elementary schools.

Do you think it’s a sign? The young man wandered into the Cloverdale Reporter office late one recent afternoon, looking a little lost. He’d tentatively approached our front door, then turned around, only to return a few moments later. “Can we help you?” We asked. In halting English (was his accent French? Possibly Spanish?), he said he was looking for The Sign. The Smallville Sign. The long-running TV show about the early days of Clark Kent, before he became Superman, was once synonymous with Cloverdale, which stood in for the budding superhero’s home town when the series filmed on location. The folksy phrase Home of Smallville was proudly emblazoned on “Destination Cloverdale” towers welcoming visitors to the historic town centre at 176 Street and Highway 10 and at 58A Avenue. But they were taken down about two and a half years ago, when 176 Street was revitalized with heritage lamp posts and other beautification projects. The series – which wrapped up its final season earlier this year – hadn’t filmed here since 2006. They used a Burnaby backlot instead. The young man’s leather backpack was covered in flags and emblems from all over the world – travel souvenirs, presumably. He also clutched a stack of printouts from various fan websites, complete with photos of The Sign. “It’s gone,” we told him. “They took it down.”
rating the show with a plaque or sidewalk marker in Cloverdale. Looking into the eyes of Smallville fans, it still seems like a good idea.
A barn of a different colour JENNIFER LANG PHOTO
Red or brown, it’s all the same in black and white.
His hopeful eyes clouded with disappointment. So we directed him towards another Smallville landmark that’s still around – the Clova Cinema, which stood in for the TV show’s Talon theatre. The Clova? Oh, he’d already seen it, he smiled, nodding. He thanked us and we sent him on his way. Last month, we had another young Smallville fan drop by the office wondering – hoping – to take a photo of the sign. She and her dad had come all the way from Ontario and were mighty disappointed to learn it’s no longer on view. It’s clear Smallville, once Cloverdale’s top tourist draw, continues to win over new fans – folks who are willing to travel across the country, or the world, on a pilgrimage to the real town that played such an important role in their beloved show. A while back there was talk of commemo-

The new owners of the Red Barn in Cloverdale have given the heritage buildings a new coat of paint, in a different colour – brown. Readers weighed in on our Facebook page. “It looks modern, but I think the red made it stand out and was more memorable,” said Reporter reader Kristy Hill. “I also liked the red barn,” added Marilyn Guthrie. Others were more receptive. “Hm, we could get used to that!” piped in Jonas Lee Photography. “It looks really nice,” added Chris Vanderstoep, who admitted the trademark red will be missed. When told that a store that sells modern furniture has moved into the familiar Highway 10 and 176 Street corner location – former home of Cloverdale’s now defunct Red Barn Antiques for more than 40 years – Kathleen Kuryliw said she promised to check it out. “Will miss the red yet,” she added. Jo-Anne Maynes was glad to see a new business coming to town, but also admitted to feeling a little sad to see the red go. “Looks fresh, however, guess we can’t call it the Red Barn anymore.”

Health, wellness on the menu With activities ranging from chair massages and retirement planning to free blood pressure testing, it wasn’t exactly an average day at the office. About 150 local HandiDart employees turned out for a health and wellness fair at the Cloverdale depot, the largest of three fairs presented by MVT Canadian Bus Inc. As many as 12 local vendors participated in the Sept. 13 event here, dispensing advice on smoking cessation, credit counselling, and even legal issues, along with offering fitness assessments, and information on heart health, diabetes and cancer. “Employees are our greatest asset,” executive coordinator Patricia Robertson said. Employees also received a free healthy snack pack with an apple, granola bar, water bottle and pedometer. They could also enter to win fitness-related prizes. The aim was to help put employees in contact with resources in the community that can help improve their overall physical, mental and financial health. “It was just to put them in touch with resources they didn’t even know were there,” she said, adding for many, it was the first time they’d had their blood pressure checked. “They got some really good information.” Vendors included WorkSafe BC, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC and Yukon, a physiotherapist, and others. MVT is contracted by TransLink to offer HandyDart service in the Metro Vancouver area. It has more than 580 employees.

Local java junkies grab more coffee-to-go from the 60 Avenue location in Cloverdale than from any other 7-Eleven in Surrey. And this morning, 7-Eleven stores across the city and the country will be giving away free, mediumsized coffees in honour of National Coffee Day. The free cuppa Joes, cappuccinos, and spiced pumpkin lattes will be flowing from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. (get it?) Sept. 29. “It’ll be a small thank you to our regular customers and a way to welcome new guests to a great coffee,” says Tim Donegan, vice president of 7-Eleven Canada Inc. Surrey residents love their coffee, but Calgary is where the national franchise sees its biggest volume of coffee sales.

From Starbucks to literary stardom In 1993 writers slouched over a pedestal table in Cloverdale Starbucks hashing over the pros and cons of producing a writers’ conference. Could we afford it? No. Would anyone come? Well, we would! Who would present the workshops and lone keynote? What would we charge? Was Surrey ready for this? We laughed. You bet! Spearheaded by indefatigable author Ed Grif-
fin, we plotted a one-day Surrey Writers’ Conference backed by Surrey Continuing Education principal, Elisa Carlson. A few Johnson Heights Secondary classroomstyle workshops, chow in the school cafeteria, Vancouver Sun veteran journalist Denny Boyd as guest speaker in the gym. We thought that should fly. It was worth a shot. This month – 19 years later – over 500 writers, poets, playwrights, agents and publishers will flock to the Sheraton

Vancouver Guildford Hotel for four actionpacked, inspiring days. Reputed to be among the top three writers’ conferences in North America, Surrey’s own
writers’ conference has aged gracefully. Over the years Maeve Binchy, Wayson Choy and Jean Auel have delivered keynotes. Best-selling authors Diana Gabaldon (Outlander series), Jack Whyte (Camulod Chronicles), Anne Perry (Victorian detective series) and New York literary agent Donald Maass are regular workshop presenters. Local authors and agents are also regularly profiled. A Blue Pencil Café encourages writ-

This year the conference became a registered not-for profit society. will be designated Surrey International Writers’ Conference Week in the City of Surrey. The 2011 conference battle cry is “This day we write!”, Robert Dugoni’s closing 2010 keynote challenge that brought the cheering packed house to its feet. Generous support from major sponsors such as the Arts Council of Surrey, the City of Surrey, Surrey Board of Trade, the SurreyNorth Delta Leader, the Cloverdale Reporter and hundreds of enthusiastic volunteers have given the international literary community the right to say: “See you in Surrey!” For conference information, or to volunteer, please call 778-3226445. There’s an entertaining video from the event posted to YouTube documenting the efforts of various customers and friends – and yep, they’re all guys – trying their best to defeat the five-pound black bean and cheese burrito, the equivalent of five Mondo Burritos in one “humongaloid” burrito, according to one May 5 participant. If you can eat it in half an hour, it’s free. “I’m dying. Absolutely dying,” groaned another participant, who struggled to clean his plate at the 26-minute-mark. “It was delicious at first, but you go into it, and it’s just bad,” commented another. “This was nothing short of an epic disaster,” declared another man, defeated by the five-pound monstrosity. – Cloverdale Reporter

Q: I’ve battled headaches and a sore jaw for years....last year, I had all my teeth crowned and my new bite created by a Neuromuscular Dentist....and guess what, no more pain!...my question is why aren’t ALL Dentists trained in Neuromuscular Dentistry? A: Great question and as Neuromuscular Dentists ourselves we often wonder this same thing... but, the truth is that there are many different philosophies in the field of Dentistry for the treatment of TMJ Arthralgia and Dysfunction.... NMD is only one of these philosophies.... and different Dentists have been trained and have adopted different philosophies and treatment regimens – this is why not all Dentists are trained in Neuromuscular Dentistry. Neuromuscular dentistry (NMD) is a dental treatment philosophy in which temporomandibular joints, teeth, muscles, bone and nerves are all considered as parts of the Stomatognathic system. NMD is a treatment modality of Dentistry that focuses on correcting “misalignment” of the jaw centered around the temporomandibular joints (TMJ). NMD acknowledges there are multiple signs and symptoms related to postural problems involving the lower jaw and cervical neck region. NMD recognizes that misalignment problems can be corrected by understanding the relationships between the tissues of the Stomatognathic system. NMD uses objective data to
aid in the understanding of how the bite is affecting these misalignment problems. Neuromuscular dentistry uses computerized instrumentation to measure jaw function, muscle activity and temporomandibular joint sounds to help identify joint derangements. TENS machines are used to de-program pathological muscle function and aid in determining a physiological (healthy) jaw position. Once a physiologic jaw position is found, an orthotic is used to hold this new position which is worn for 3–6 months (24 hours per day). There is a high degree of success with this type of Neuromuscular orthotic and once symptoms have resolved the patient can choose to wean off of the orthotic or move forward with a Phase Two treatment that will support stable, long term health. Phase two treatments options include; an overlay partial denture, orthodontic treatment, dental restorations/ crowns, or an orthodontic/restorative combination. Dr’s Hill and Willoughby have trained extensively in Neuromuscular Dentistry at the world reknowned Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies and are available for further consultation if you or a family member suffer from any of the above signs or symptoms.
