And a contingent of 31 students and staff from Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary was there, joining crowds of up to 18,000 young people inside Rogers Arena last Thursday for We Day Vancouver. The event – the largest in Canada – was created to inspire youth to action and social change at home and around the globe. Speakers included former USSR president Mikhail Gorbachev, actor and activist Mia Farrow and NBA star Shaquille O’Neal, along with performances by bands like Hedley and Down With Webster.

A huge crowd of onlookers turned out to watch parents assemble the new playground at Adams Road Elementary last weekend, where there was a celebratory mood in the air. The fill was slated to go in on Sunday, prior to a final inspection. The new school opened in January.

Working for play By Jennifer Lang Students at one of Surrey’s newest schools, Adams Road Elementary in Clayton, now have more to do than play in the dirt at recess. A playground was installed over the weekend, thanks to a hardworking crew of parents from the school community, who volunteered to get the job done. They were overseen by a representative from the company that makes the playground equipment. Adams Road and another new local school, Hazelgrove Elementary, are two of 44 schools in B.C. to receive provincial funding for playgrounds. A total of $8 million was announced to upgrade, replace or build new playgrounds over two years. Adams Road welcomed its first students in January, but a playground wasn’t included in the $11 million construction budget. The Parent Advisory Council began fundraising for one, as well as lobbying senior government minister and Surrey-Cloverdale MLA Kevin Falcon and others. Now capital agreements will include playground equipment. On Oct. 15, there was a huge turnout of families to watch history being made, as the volunteer crew built the new playground at Adams Road, munching on hot dogs and other goodies, as children played on the all-weather field. The fill for the playground was slated to go in on Sunday, Oct. 16 prior to final inspection. “The kids are thrilled and parents are left with a fantastic feeling of accomplishment and community spirit,” said parent Heather Harasymow.

Online voting won’t solve problem To the editor; On-line voting is touted by many as the great solution to the problem of decreasing voter participation in the election process. Apparently municipal politicians are also among the growing movement clamouring for change to the way we vote, as they approved a resolution to that effect at the recent Union of BC Municipalities Convention in Vancouver. I submit that should we move to an on-line method of voting we will quickly see voter turnouts decrease even further. With on-line (or electronic) voting there is far greater op-

portunity for fraud and tampering on the part of those who manage the would-be system. On the other hand, the paper ballot system we use now is virtually fool-proof as each marked ballot is viewed by at least three people. Our current method is envied by many, especially Americans, who have gone almost exclusively to the electronic system. Decreasing voter turnouts is not due to the fact Canadians have lost faith in our process

of voting. To the contrary, participation has steadily decreased because voters have less and less faith in the politicians themselves. Changing the way we vote isn’t going to solve this fundamental problem. We need to address the root of the problem – voter apathy. And for that, our politicians do well to point the finger straight back at themselves!

Flu vaccine helps protect others If you won’t do it for yourself, do it for someone else. The annual flu shot is now available at doctors’ offices, clinics and pharmacies, and it’s free for seniors and children aged six and 23 months. “The influenza vaccination is a great way to avoid infection with influenza viruses and to protect other, more vulnerable individuals, says Dr. Perry Kendall, the province’s health officer, who adds it’s still important to follow basic hygiene practices like washing your hands, coughing and sneezing into your sleeve and staying home when you feel sick. B.C. residents can find the nearest flu shot clinic by calling HealthLink BC at 8-1-1 or using the online B.C. flu clinic locator, www.health.gov.bc.ca/ flu. The vaccine is also free for health care and emergency workers, caregivers for seniors and children under two years old, pregnant women in their third trimester during winter flu season, aboriginal people and those who are very obese. There’s a dispensing fee for B.C. residents who are not in a high-risk group.

Q

Why risk a Marginal Battery?

A

You know it’s time to replace your car battery when you can answer “yes” to any of the following questions.

• Has your battery outlived its warranty period? • Has your vehicle been jump started recently? • Have any indicator lights come on in the vehicle? • Is corrosion evident on the battery posts or cables? A weak battery can make it difficult to start your vehicle on a good morning but as cold weather approaches a weak battery can let you down. Early detection, a simple battery test can prevent you from being stranded at the most inconvenient of times. Stop into your local repair facility and have your battery tested.

The Strength of Teamwork... The Reputation for results.

Q A

I twisted my knee at work. My knee is now painful and swollen. What can I do? A forceful twist to the knee may result in injury to the structures of the knee joint, this is characterized by pain, swelling and instability. The fact that you did not fall suggests that your knee injury may have been the result of one of the following factors: Biomechanics - muscle imbalance of the back/pelvis and lower limb, weak core stabilizing muscles, faulty pelvis and foot alignment, leg length difference or poor lifting technique. Work Environment - unsupportive footwear, lack of cushioning, hard or slippery surfaces and sudden changes in floor gradient. Equipment - lifting/pushing or pulling heavy equipment in an unstable postural position causing a repetitive overload / overuse stress to the knee. SELF-HELP MEASURES Ice the affected area for 10-15 minutes 2-3 times a day. A knee wrap may help to reduce the swelling. Footwear ensure a good supportive shoe with adequate cushioning and ankle support. Lifting bend at the hips and knees keeping your back straight. Avoid lifting and twisting your body at the same time. Face the correct direction before lifting. Do not work in a crouched position for long periods of time. A physiotherapy assessment will help to identify the cause of injury and a comprehensive treatment program can help relieve your pain.
