Watts, Surrey First slate sweeps to victory
Surrey mayor Dianne Watts is re-elected.
By Jennifer Lang Make that Surrey First, second and third. Mayor Dianne Watts and the Surrey First team crushed the opposition on election night, sweeping the seats for council and all but one spot on school board. Longtime councillor Bob Bose, of the Surrey Civic Coalition, lost his seat after 28 of the last 33 years
on council. The former Surrey mayor earned 25,832 votes, behind Surrey First incumbent Barinder Rasode (33,616) and Bruce Hagan (36,480). “I’m not going to run again,” Bose said, adding the loss would have made him happy if it meant one of the SCC hopefuls got on council. “Enormous sadness is we have
these bright young candidates,” he said. “Maybe they’ll get on with their lives.” He later told his supporters via Twitter: “Many thanks to you all for placing your trust in me for all these years. I am a lucky man to have so many friends.” Despite heavy turnouts at advance polls, and reports of long queues at the Cloverdale Recre-
ation Centre and in Clayton, where voters were lined up out the door, turnout was just 25 per cent in Surrey. Out of 279,140 possible voters, just 70,232 turned out to cast their votes, slightly higher than the 24 per cent recorded in 2008 but well below the 35 per cent who voted in Surrey’s 2005 election. People who work in downtown Cloverdale are being reminded to keep personal items like cellphones, purses and wallets out of sight – and preferably locked up – while they’re at the office. The warning comes from the Surrey RCMP after a theft from a local business last Friday. The possible suspects were described as two females, one approximately 45 years old, standing 5’5”, tanned with a medium build. The second woman is 5’5”, in her 30s, with a heavy-set build. A loss was disappointing to social media-savvy Hillsdon, who earned an endorsement from mayor Watts and other prominent Surrey Firsters in the final week of his campaign, fittingly on Twitter. Like Bose, Hillsdon plans to move on to new ventures. “I have found it incredibly Paul Hillsdon difficult these past three years to build a life and bright future, all while keeping the political door slightly ajar,” he told supporters on his website.

LETTERS
We love hearing from our readers, whether it’s in person, by letter, email, or online. On Dec. 1, we’re making a change to our online commenting system at www.cloverdalereporter.com, at all of our Black Press sister papers’ websites, and at BCLocalNews.com. Readers will only be able to comment on the web version of a story by using a Facebook account, which will mean their name and profile picture will be linked to the statements they post. Moving away from anonymous comments is part of a growing trend by media companies. Over the past few years, some readers have raised concerns about allowing visitors to post anonymous comments. The policy has led to some unpleasant and mean-spirited postings, which in turn prevents people from particpating. If you don’t have a Facebook account, keep in mind we still run letters to the editor in print, and online. Submit letters, news tips, photos, and coming events to editor@cloverdalereporter.com, by fax to 604-575-2406 or by mail or in person to 17586 56A Avenue, Surrey, B.C., V3S 1G3. Choir spreads spirit Langley’s long-running, inclusive community chorus is tuning up for its popular annual Yuletide concerts. So This is Christmas features a blend of traditional, classic and contemporary carols and musical selections that are sure to share the joy of the season with audiences. The choir has been around since 1992, when a small group of singers from Langley got together to form a choral group. They wanted to sing and have fun, as well as provide entertainment to the Langley area communities. Members come from all over the greater Vancouver area and the Fraser Valley. They share a love of music and a desire to improve their voices and musical skills. Their two seasonal public presentations – the Christmas and spring concerts – always sell-outs.
The choir also performs at hospitals, seniors’ residences, fundraising events, parties and other local events. Membership has grown from 14 voices and one music director nearly 20 years ago to a fall 2011 choir of 78 singers plus current music director, Anita Comba. Audiences can catch them three upcoming concerts. So This is Christmas is presented Nov. 26 at at Willoughby Christian Reformed Church, 20525 72 Ave., Langley, starting at 7:30 p.m. There’s a matinee performance Sunday, Dec. 4, at Sharon United Church, 21562 Old Yale Rd., in Langley (the concert begins at 3 p.m. A second matinee is planned for Sunday, Dec. 11 at St. Dunstan’s Anglican Church, 3024 264 Street in Aldergrove, also at 3 p.m. For more information, visit www. langleychorus.org. Tickets (at the door) are $15 for adults, $10 for students and free for under six.

The AFA chemical peel is an amino acid antioxidant based peel which helps remove dullKIM BRAR ing dead skin cells on the surface and stimulates cells within the skin to create a polished and glowing complexion. AFA stands for amino filaggrin based antioxidants. The amino acids in the formula take after the amino acids that occur naturally in your skin, and thus do not trigger allergic reactions. The amino acids work to exfoliate and provide antioxidants, while moisturizing the skin. Effective exfoliation can dramatically reduce the appearance of fine
lines, reduce visible hyper pigmentation (age spots) and promote a more youthful and beautiful appearance to the skin. The antioxidants will help to promote a more healthy appearance of the skin, and there is little or no irritation. Along with good exfoliation, greater moisture retention in the skin helps even further reduce the appearance of fine lines. It is one of the newest and most popular chemical peel treatments available because it is very effective and can treat acne, uneven pigmentation, and dull rough skin, and sun damaged skin. The AFA peel is also an excellent pre-treatment for acne laser treatments or acne laser treatments and will help to increase better results.
