Gypsy moth spray plan winds down
Final set of aerial treatments wraps up this week By Jennifer Lang Residents of Cloverdale and other parts of Surrey and Langley awoke bright and early again this week to the sound of a low-flying helicopter spraying to combat the invasive gypsy moth. The third and final round of the Forests Ministry’s treatment program got underway Sunday – Mothers’ Day – as some residents noted unhappily, reacting to a reminder issued to residents last week. Conducted between 5 and 7:30 a.m. on consecutive mornings, spraying was expected to wrap up Tuesday, even as residents living in the spray area continued to ask questions about the safety of the treatment agent – and how the
project has been handled in terms of informing the public. More than 4,500 hectares in Surrey – centred around 64 Avenue and 176 Street in Cloverdale – and another 200 in Delta have been treated with Foray 48B to combat the introduced moth, which is destructive to forests, orchards, farms and urban trees. Susan Simmons says residents weren’t given enough advance warning of the aerial spray program, or that each treatment would last several days. She also says her health has been affected by the spray, which contains Btk, deemed safe by Health Canada, along with non active ingredients to help spread the pesticide, which is harder to find

It took three hours to clean my car. She urged Reporter readers to contact their MLA and the Ministry of Forests (1-866-917-5999) with their concerns and questions. “There are lots of people who are sick and frustrated with a lack of notice, Simmons added. Another Cloverdalian questioning the safety of the treatment agent was Ryan Bennett, who started a Facebook page, held protest outside local MLA Stephanie Cadieux’s office, and launched an online petition that at last count had gathered more than 12,500

supporters, in an attempt to stop the spray program. “Although the focus of the spraying is on Btk being a safe bacteria, which the City of Surrey, province of B.C. and Health Canada can claim is safe, it is in fact the Foray 48B mix, along with numerous undisclosed ingredients that has the impact on human health, the petition read. “We now have over 1,200 documented allergic reactions to this mix but Health Canada has chosen not to step in and investigate, it continued. Monday, Tasleem Juma, a senior public affairs consultant, said Fraser Health is aware of only two incidents where individuals went to Langley Hospital as a precaution
after not feeling well after the first aerial spraying in mid-April. Tim Ebata, a forest health officer with the forests ministry, expected Tuesday to be the last day of spraying, however a few areas may have been resprayed that day, to make up for a rain squall that hit Sunday. One of the areas was around 180th near the Cloverdale Fairgrounds, which he described as “moth central. There will be high-density trapping of moths using pheromone traps in the sprayed area over the next two summers to gauge the success of the spray program. “Two years of negatives indicates an eradication has been successSee ADVISORY / Page 2

Cloverdale Rodeo and Country Fair kicks off Surrey is gearing up for its 69th annual Cloverdale Rodeo and 127th annual Country Fair, and organizers say this year will be one for the memory books. The event, May 15 to 18 at the Cloverdale Fairgrounds at 176 Street and 60 Avenue, is the culmination of a year of planning. The rodeo will include bareback riding, barrel racing, saddle bronc riding, bull riding and the ever-popular mutton busting. Some of the world’s best cowboys and cowgirls will attend as the Cloverdale Rodeo continues its practice of providing an invitational event, offering up a total of $328,000 in cash prizes for the four main events. “This year’s crop of elite veteran competitors along with the next wave of young athletes will deliver an amazing exhibition of athleticism and an unparalleled rodeo experience,” says Cloverdale Rodeo Chair Penny Smythe. “We are excited to welcome the best
of the best in the sport of rodeo.” Cloverdale’s youngest riders get their chance to shine in the mutton bustin’ competition, featured at all five rodeo performances. B.C.-based Karen Lee Batten, B.C. Country Music Association’s female vocalist of the year, will also be performing at the rodeo. Trick rider and liberty horse entertainer Niki Cammaert Flundra is also a featured rodeo performer this year. Also new in 2015 is the West Fine Art Show, one of B.C.’s largest and most prestigious art shows. Between 15 and 30 of the finest artists in Western Canada will be at the fair as part of the show. There’s also the World Freestyle RoundUp Skateboard Championships, which is expecting close to 30 skaters from seven countries to compete for up to $10,000 in prize money (see story on page 13).

Barrel racing is one of four main events at the invitational rodeo, promising to deliver an ‘amazing exhibition of athleticism’ says chair Penny Smythe.
Of note is 12-year-old Japanese skateboarder Isamu Yamamoto, who took the world by storm last year when he beat out 20-year-old Kaue Araujo from Brazil for the
top spot in the amateur division. This year, Yamamoto comes back to compete in the pro division. Also enjoy the midway with its collection of rides and games for the kids, along with the lumberjack show, B.C. Country Music Pavilion, and the Longhorn Saloon, with live entertainment after the sun goes down, with nightly performances by Ken McCoy Band and Ettinger & Big 50. The outdoor stage will feature Appaloosa, Robyn & Ryleigh, Chris Buck, Hey Stewey and more. Grounds admission is $12 (kids 12 and under are free; must be accompanied by an adult), and rodeo performances are $20 (also free for kids 12 and under). ful,” he said. In terms of notification, the forests ministry found it had to work harder than in the past to get the message out. Ebata said notification was initially by traditional media ahead of the first round of spraying but that was supplemented with a drop of 45,000 flyers ahead of the second and third rounds as well as electronic road signs. Many calls the ministry received were noise complaints about the low-flying helicopters, he said. “They were caught off guard,” he said. “And people who feel they have to protect themselves from making contact with the droplets were upset because they didn’t get that opportunity.” The ministry plans to finish spraying this week and “hopefully won’t come back again,” he said. “We apologize to the public for the inconvenience.” A May 1 advisory from the Ministry of Forests said as a general precaution, people who wanted to reduce their exposure were to remain indoors with windows and doors closed during spraying, and for at least 30 minutes after. It also told anyone with health conditions who are concerned to contact their health care provider, or to contact HealthLink BC, available 24 hours a day, by dialing 811. “The results of two extensive public-health monitoring studies in Vancouver and Victoria (1992 and 1999) did not show any increase in illnesses seen by health-care providers or in hospital emergencyroom visits due to spraying,” the advisory states. “As well, the monitoring has not shown evidence of harmful effects on children with asthma or those with weakened immune systems.” – Files Jeff Nagel

The Via Rail team pushed the bed to victories three years in a row in Cloverdale, and also pushed the bed in New Westminster’s Hyack Festival, where they placed a respectable second in a race there. Eventually, the team retired and the bed was sold to Turkey’s Partymakers, says Power, who is a director and operating superintendent with the Fraser Valley Heritage Railway Society.
Bed mystery solved A mystery involving the origins of the blue bed that’s helped Turkey’s Party Markers ride to five successive victories at the annual Cloverdale bed races has finally been solved (“A Race with a Reputation,” May 6). Retired VIA Rail electrician Ron Power says the bed originally belonged to his team. It was originally a double bed that was custom-cut and welded into a sturdy single with with four bicycle tires and push handles. The work was done at the VIA

Cloverdale on parade The 69th annual Cloverdale Rodeo Parade is expected to draw thousands of spectators into the historic town centre Saturday morning. The parade starts at 10 a.m., but arrive and follow your nose to a traditional pancake breakfast. There are about 1,000 participants this year. The Fraser Valley Heritage Railway Society will have several entries of note, including a scale model Interurban railcar. Watch for several entrants with heavy horses, a wide range of vintage and historic vehicles, a solid representation of political and service organizations, and – the stars of the show – the Gizeh Shriners, the quintessential parade component. This year’s Parade Marshall is Dianne Watts, former mayor of Surrey. The parade starts at the corner of Highway 10 and 177B Street, heading west to 176 Street, north to 58A Avenue, east to 167A Street, north to 60 Avenue, turning south on 177B to 57 Avenue. Spray agent raises questions To the editor; Re: “Residents question spray safety,” April 27 Foray 48B insecticide claims to destroy only the gypsy moth caterpillar larvae. That is false as it kills butterfly caterpillar larvae as well through the vast insecticide coverage by aerial spraying. Moth and butterfly are both of the lepidoptrera family and usually organic farmers try to isolate spraying so as to not contaminate everything to avoid killing off butterflies. The monarchs have declined so much over the years they are on an endangered species list. Herbicides kill vital plant life for butterflies too. Losing important pollinating insects shall come at a much greater cost later to all,
for much of the existing plants on this planet would decline. Since only the male gypsy moth emerges from cocoons first, added pheromone traps would help to prevent mating with the delayed emergence of females several days later and nature would have taken care of the rest. Would of been great if extensive trapping was set up for all residential, public and commercial properties instead. If too expensive, smaller versions of the trap could have been made. There has to be better choices than aerial spraying that goes beyond just killing the pest. Any pesticide with a warning label means lab animals had negative reactions. Since the Boray 48B’s lab cultured bacteria named Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is only 2.1 per cent of the
What about us? To the editor; Two hundred years ago, the gypsy moth was introduced to the U.S. So, why now is the forests ministry so afraid of an epidemic here, or that the U.S. will reject certain plants for fear of “Cross boundary” contamination? The ministry explained the need to spray was in order to protect blueberry fields, trees and ornamental shrubs, and said it would not be harmful to humans, pets and wildlife, although people with respiratory problems or sensitive skin could be affected. This spray, Foray 48B, was approved by
mixed ingredients and 97.9 per cent undisclosed stated on product label shakes the confidence of many. It warns to keep away from children, protective gear for handlers and for aerial or ground spraying. When agricultural farms use it, workers are restricted to re-enter the sprayed area for 12 hours. Check http://gaiavisions.org/GypsyMoths/cvsForay48B.pdf. It’s good Fraser Health is watching for an increase in public health problems in spray and drift zones, but spray irritants can often mimic seasonal ailments due to this time of year. It may be difficult to differentiate from seasonal ailments that are prominent at this time unless
everyone coming in with sinus, eye infection, rash, asthma, sore throat, or gastrointestinal flu etc.... are all tested or it will be inconclusive. Knowing the cutbacks to our healthcare system many doctors often prescribe treatment for such symptoms without ever testing for cause. Some may only have mild symptoms of eye, nose, throat irritation that salt water gargle, flushing eyes, nostrils help. Only the emergency cases stand out. Not all natural substances are 100 per cent risk or toxic free and as some can have accumulative affects over time as hindsight has taught us throughout the decades. B. Polak Cloverdale

a regulatory body who said standards were met. They claimed to have done their due diligence in warning the public. So why are so many people in this area saying they received no notification of spraying or an explanation of its safety? Last Thursday, Friday and Saturday were sprayed for the second time. There was no warning spraying would take three days. By Friday afternoon I was feeling very sick; five days later I’m still feeling sick, poisoned and in more pain. The ministry said to stay indoors for five hours (I had been indoors for five hours). Does that mean that workers could get a paid day off ?
Many people have been affected. They also said that the residue could be easily washed off. It took three hours to clean my car. How are we to deal with the next spraying, May 10 to 13? I don’t look forward to living off Gravol and more pain killers for three days. Please talk to your local MLA and the Ministry of Forestry (1-866-917-5999) and insist the spraying be stopped. The ministry said, “Life is tough for a bug.” What about us? Susan Simmons, Kelly Taylor, Lynne Hiebert Cloverdale

A Cloverdale resident who went to assist a stranded motorist captured dramatic images from the scene last week. Thomas Dyck said he noticed a man who was apparently having car trouble had pulled over just outside his apartment in the 16400-block of 64 Avenue last Thursday. He rushed outside the building to help. That’s when there was a loud sound, almost like an explosion, and the car burst into flames. Surrey Firefighters from Hall 8 were on the scene within minutes, and were able to quickly extinguish the blaze. Nobody was hurt.

Cloverdale welcomes back freestyle pros By Jennifer Lang Competitors from as far away as China, Brazil, Japan, and Germany return to the Cloverdale Rodeo this weekend for the fourth annual World Freestyle Round-up Skateboarding Championships. The four-day battle puts the fairgrounds at the centre of the freestyle skateboarding universe, attracting top amateurs and professionals – as well as masters-level athletes, taking part in a new “legends” category this year. There’s $10,000 in prize money up for grabs May 15-18, along with prizes from sponsors for amateurs, but that’s not the only reason more than 30 skaters from eight countries will be taking part. Last year, 12-year-old Japanese skateboarder Isamu Yamamoto took the competition by storm, beating out Kaue Araujo from Brazil for the top spot in the ama-

enjoy mixing with the “legends” of the sport. “These are our forefathers,” Little says. Freestyle is a grassroots, highly technical style of skateboarding characterized by choreographed tricks performed on flat surfaces. There are no ramps, rails or stairs. With “maybe 350 [people] in the world” competing in freestyle, “We try to reach out to everybody,” says Little, who notes competitions are more likely to take place under a viaduct than in an arena-like venue like the Cloverdale Curling Club. While the competition is fierce, the event itself is almost more of a reunion for the entrants than anything else. Competitors scrape up enough money to cover travel costs and most billet or bunk with organizers during their stay in Surrey. “This is a family,” he says. “A lot of people feel it’s more than a contest. It’s a therapy camp.” Little allows that while there aren’t a lot of “sisters in the family” there is one woman taking part, Mic Murayama, and she’ll compete against the guys for the third year in a row in Cloverdale. She placed 8th in the amateur division in 2013 and within the top 10 the year before, so it will be interesting to see how she fares in 2015. Since debuting at the Cloverdale Rodeo and Country Fair in 2012, the event has been a consistent (and weather-proof) crowd pleaser, drawing standing-room-only audiences and forcing organizers to bring out a fourth set of bleachers this year, and emerging as the premier freestyle competition in the world. “It’s been so well received,” Little says. “That’s why the rodeo is so excited to have us.” It’s also free, exciting to watch for rodeo-goers of all ages, and, best of all, sure to inspire the next generation of freestyle skateboarders. Watch for freestyle demos at Thursday’s Bed Races (5:45 p.m., 176A St. at 57A Ave.), the Cloverdale Chili Cook-off Friday at Clover Square Village (4:45 p.m.) and as part of the Cloverdale Rodeo Parade Saturday, at 10 a.m. – Visit theworldroundup. com

Gymnasts win medals Two members of the Surrey Gymnastic Society performed well at that Western Canadian Gymnastics Championships in Okotoks, Alberta two weekends ago. Treyson Cerrato, 13, placed third all around in a field of 15 competitors in the Provincial Level 5 category. Cerrato, one of just two athletes in the group to qualify for five of six event finals, tied for the gold medal on parallel bars, won a silver medal on high bar, and took the bronze on rings. He was also fourth on vault and sixth on floor. Emanuel Gutierrez Sandoval, 11, was sixth overall in Elite 3. The youngest age category in the competition includes physical testing by national team coaches the day before competition, and Gutierrez Sandoval placed seventh. Public Comment Period Consideration to Amend Permit No. 2012 – 072 Direct Transfer Coal Facility May 4 – 19, 2015 Fraser Surrey Docks LP (FSD) is considering applying to amend its existing permit from Port Metro Vancouver (Permit No. 2012 – 072) that gives it conditional approval to build and operate a Direct Transfer Coal Facility within its existing lease area. The proposed amendment would have no impact on the volume of coal permitted to be shipped through FSD (4 million metric tonnes per year). It would allow FSD to load coal directly from the facility to ocean-going vessels eliminating or reducing the number of barges required. Please visit www.fsd.bc.ca/amendment to review the changes to the existing permit that FSD is considering and provide feedback on the proposed scope of the studies, which will assess the difference between the use of ocean-going vessels and barges.
Fraser Surrey Docks LP (FSD) is the largest employer on the Fraser River waterfront, with more than 300 full-time employees. FSD has been a major employer and contributor to local communities for over 50 years, handling over 3 billion dollars-worth of goods annually.

and June Ainsworth respectively) bring this dark and haunting work to life and make the blossoming romance and impending doom all that more real. Two performances stand out for their honesty and emotional range: Peterson as the mother always seemed to be a shade away from breaking down completely (especially playing against Challenger, who too often
performed the same note of fist-clenched frustration in almost every scene) and Francisque, whose dialogue came off as natural conversation and not scripted at all. The scenes between Wiens and Polliyaguru work because the two actors appear to have chemistry together and so the awkwardness they have early on is natural and disappears once the characters have become closer. Secunda is a perfect fit in his role as the bishop and the fact that he was a literal last-minute replacement doesn’t show at all.
Although probably better known for his work on the television shows Friday Night Lights and Shameless, playwright Etan Frankel’s writing career began in the theatre where he achieved some success (this play won the Williamstown Theatre Festival’s Weiss-
berger Playwriting Award in 2006). Truth and Reconciliation runs until May 16 at Surrey Little Theatre (7027 184th Street, Surrey). Tickets can be ordered by phone at (604) 576-8451 or at Brown Paper Tickets.
