Parade hinges on sponsors By Jennifer Lang They’re the highlight of Cloverdale’s annual Santa Parade, but decorated big rigs won’t be rolling down main street this Christmas – unless local businesses once again help cover costs. An appeal for financial assistance for Surrey’s Santa Parade of Lights went out last week, urging Cloverdale’s business community to step up with $500 parade sponsorships or other forms of help. The annual evening parade winds its way though the historic town centre every December, drawing thousands of spectators. The event culminates with the arrival of Santa Claus, along with a dazzling lighted procession of big rig trucks from Vancouver Island and the Fraser Valley. Ferry transportation costs of the Island Equipment Owners Association have traditionally been borne by B.C. Ferries. “They have been forced to cut back and cannot assist again this year with any discounts,” the appeal says. The charitable discount ended last year, according to Paul Orazietti, executive

director of the Cloverdale Business Improvement Association, which co-sponsors the parade along with the Cloverdale Chamber of Commerce. When sponsors were approached for $500 contributions in 2013, they readily answered the call, securing 12 big rigs for the parade. Additional traffic control and policing costs are another burden. Last year, city hall asked organizers to avoid the use of volunteers, resulting in an unanticipated budget shortfall. This year, the City of Surrey has provided the Cloverdale BIA and Cloverdale Chamber of Commerce with $6,000 funding for policing and traffic control, or about 75 per cent of the cost. “We would appreciate any help or potential sponsors that you may be able to direct us, to help put on this wonderful event which is highly attended,” the appeal said. The Parade of Lights also functions as a food drive for the Surrey Food Bank and Surrey Christmas Bureau. To find out more, call the BIA at 604576-3155 or 604-574-9802 to reach the Cloverdale Chamber.

ALL YOU CAN EAT TUESDAYS!

By Jeff Nagel Embarrassment is just around the corner even when you’re in what seems like the privacy of your own car. A new survey of Metro Vancouver drivers found 54 per cent sing along to music while they’re behind the wheel, even though 41 per cent of “car stars” find it embarrassing if they’re caught in the act. someone in another car while in traffic. Fifty-seven per cent said they like to people watch while stuck in congested traffic, a statistic that helps explain the busting of the nose pickers. The survey by Angus Reid for Beat The Traffic, a traffic information service and app, found 66 per cent of Metro drivers think traffic is a nightmare and one third are stuck in it for at least an

hour a day. Despite B.C.’s distracted driving laws, 29 per cent said they feel using a cellphone is okay if the car is stopped and 17 per cent said they do use time in congested traffic to read emails and texts. The survey found even the perception of progress is psychologically important – 81 per cent of respondents said they’d rather keep moving on a longer route than idle.

FUN FOR EVERYONE!

By Jennifer Lang The Cops for Cancer Tour de Valley rode into Cloverdale last Wednesday morning, stopping off at Cloverdale Christian School, where students and staff greeted them with waves, whistles and high-fives – including Darren Smith, a Grade 7 student receiving treatment for a brain tumour. The cops – law enforcement officials and emergency services personnel riding to raise money and awareness for childhood cancers – worked the crowd by handing out trading cards with their pictures on them, creating an instant sensation with the kids. On Friday, Oct. 3, the group wrapped up a nine-day, 800-km ride that began on Sept. 25. The Tour de Valley, one of four B.C. tours, included 21 support crew. An ambulance, a support vehicle and five motorcycles were on hand during the ride through Cloverdale, where the tour also made stops at Clayton

By Jennifer Lang It’s a shining example of people in the community helping one of their own in need. When Justin Koechl’s little dog was hit by a car and broke his hip in two places, he turned to Facebook with a heartbreaking appeal for help. The expensive veterinary surgery Milo needed was simply out of reach. “He’s like my child,” Koechl said in a short video clip posted to Facebook. “I’m begging anybody to help me,” he said, gingerly petting Milo, a tiny Papillon cross swaddled in a laundry basket. “Even five bucks.” Supporters were asked donate directly to Cloverdale Animal Hospital, which had asked Koechl for some initial money down, but had worked out a repayment plan for the rest. An initial video with Koechl’s appeal was shared more than 547 times, and received upwards of 24,600 views in the span of just a few days. “Justin is one of our customers,” read a post by Clayton Critters owner Bente Morris. “He was in on Saturday with me talking about the surgery his furbaby needs…. Let’s show community support for a furbaby in need.” In an interview Tuesday, Morris said Koechl was shaking and in tears, so she gave him a couple of places to call that might help. She also put the word out to customers and friends on Facebook – he was selling his belongings to help raise money for medical treatment for his dog. Mary Larsen’s heart went out to Koechl when she heard of the plight of this “wonderful young man and his young companion,” urging others to help spread word and donate to the cause. “This young man is trying everything to collect money for his dog so he can pay the vet,” she told The Reporter. “Collecting bottles, finding jobs, do-

ing housework.” Thanks to the cash infusion from strangers, Milo underwent two surgeries last week and was heading home once he was deemed suitably on the mend by the vet. His first surgery lasted 2:45 hours. He went back into the operating room on Oct. 2. Fortunately, Milo was well enough to go home on Saturday (Oct. 4) and is reported to be recuperating well. A shy-sounding little girl introduced as Milo’s “little sister” declared sadly in a subsequent video recorded on Milo’s eighth day in animal hospital, “I’m pretty sure I’ll be happy when Milo’s home.”

180 Street more than chaos To the editor; Re: “Curb chaos along 180 Street,” Oct. 3 To all the parents that are upset that they must wait to drop their kids off in front of Tweedsmuir, give your head a shake. You are your own worst enemy. You have caused this new construction of the streets by disobeying the rules. Make your kids walk a block or two. I am sure they can use the exercise. I happen to live in this area and I speak for all of us who are fed up with you people blocking our driveways and streets so that we can not even get out in the morning to go to work or come home without fighting through the mass traffic jams that you are creating – and have been doing so for years. Your parking habits are illegal and you are teaching your kids to disobey the rules. No wonder your kids think the same way. (God help us when they actually grow up and supposedly assume responsibility for their own actions, oh you have taught them

well). When you are parked on the street for over 15 or more minutes to wait for your “adult child,” that is not considered stopping, that is considered parking. I can only hope that all of you get tickets, especially now since ICBC does the collection! And I will do my best to call traffic enforcement to see that they show up.

A recipe for functional youth Psychologically sound parents aside, cases of children receiving psychologically dysfunctional rearing are far too common. The most crucial aspect of parents’ rearing their offspring involves that of their children’s psychological well-being and functionality as well as that of the physical, both at home and especially while desiring to harmoniously blend into society.

Society could do much more for our children of the future by adding to senior secondary education curriculum the very basics of psychologically-sound child rearing. If society wants functional youth – and, therefore, eventually mentallyfunctional teens who become socially-crucial taxpaying adults – it only makes sense to establish and implement high-school curriculum that includes courses, or even one course, on (at least) basic child psychology and rearing that would commence in Grade(s) 11 and/or 12. One of the primary cases in point in such a course would be: Yelling or blatantly screaming at your kids is totally antithetical to rearing functional children. Such pre-emptive education would at least somewhat prepare our young people regarding the offspring they may bear one day.

By Jennifer Lang The 18th annual Police Officer of the Year Awards are tonight, and there’s a Cloverdale connection to five out of eight award categories. The awards are presented Oct. 9 by the Surrey Board of Trade, recognizing Surrey RCMP, auxiliaries, civilian employees and volunteers for innovation commitment, contribution and perseverance in the line of duty. Bell is a familiar face in Cloverdale and Clayton, where he’s part of police-community initiatives and partnerships. And Staff/Sgt. Martin Blais, formerly of the District 4 office, is up for Police Officer of the Year. More than 70 nominations were received this year. Winners are chosen by their peers and the public. The awards ceremony is being held at Sheraton Guildford, with Global TV’s Mark Madryga as master of ceremonies, and keynote speaker Bob Lenarduzzi of the Vancouver Whitecaps.

Dragon boat paddlers wanted By Jennifer Lang Men and women who are interested in forming a new seniors (ages 60 plus) competitive dragon boat team are invited to get in touch with the Fort Langley Canoe Club. Representative Allen Black says the club is looking to form a new mixed team (men and women) that would be bound for the IDBF Club Crew World Championships in 2016 in Adelaide, Australia. Men, especially, are needed, but couples, partners and singles are welcome. The club is hoping to practice at Bedford Channel in the Fraser River at Fort Langley. Black is a member of the FLCC senior mixed dragonboat team called Fortified, which won gold

at the 2014 BC Senior Games in Langley. “I am attempting to start a new, senior mixed dragonboat team for worlds in 18 months in Australia. We need men paddlers mostly, but also women,” he said. Paddlers aged 60 and older are asked to get in touch with the Fort Langley Canoe Club at membership@fortlangleycanoeclub.ca. “All those interested will be invited to a meeting to decide how to best meet this goal as there are many options,” he said. “These decisions need to be made quickly – the team will need to attend qualifier races and IDBF CC Nationals in Welland, Ontario during 2015 to earn their spot to go to IDBF CC Worlds 2016 in Australia.”

The event will bring together all ages and dance abilities to re-enact the King of Pop’s Thriller moves, in step with people all over the world doing the same thing, at the same time, dressed as the zombie army from the 13-minute video, directed by John Landis. Now, for the first time, Thrill The World is coming Surrey. “Thrill Time is 3 p.m. “sharp Oct. 25, organizers say, and the event runs from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Cloverdale Youth Park, 6188 176 Street. Giving Thanks this Thanksgiving You’ll probably agree: life often disappoints. We get sick, we have unfulfilled plans and dreams, our efforts go unrewarded and unrecognized, our intentions are misinterpreted. We have regrets, friends let us down, and often life just does not go the way we had planned. The list can go on. When we try to fill the empty spaces in our lives, it often doesn’t work–we still feel dissatisfied and restless. At this time of year, we like to reflect on those things we are thankful for, which give our lives meaning and fulfillment. But given how disappointing life can be, it’s not always easy to feel a real sense of gratitude. If you feel this way, God’s promises are particularly relevant to you this year.

God promises a new life where every tear will be wiped dry, where there will be no more pain or suffering. This promise is freely given to all those who believe and give their life to Jesus Christ. There is hope beyond the disappointment that we may be feeling. Jesus Christ walked the earth, died, and rose again to bring about this everlasting hope, so that at Thanksgiving time, in spite of all life’s hardships, we may echo, “Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!” (2 Corinthians 9:15). Visitors to the Bose Corn Maze in Cloverdale make use of a viewing structure to find their way out of the labyrinth.

Last weekend for corn maze By Jennifer Lang It’s become part of the fabric of Surrey, and if you haven’t yet been, you’ve only got a few days left to experience the Bose Corn Maze. The popular Cloverdale attraction closes for the season on Thanksgiving Monday (Oct. 13). Spread across 17 acres amid 12-feet high rows, it’s one of the region’s largest corn mazes, and certainly its

most challenging. Set on one of Surrey’s original farms, it’s been a harvest tradition since 1999, when the Bose family seized on a maze as a way to connect Surreyites with their city’s agricultural roots. Since then, it’s entertained countless visitors, and played host to fashion shoots and movie productions, weddings, and corporate events. The stalks are planted to form an elaborate design that’s not discernible at ground level. This year’s maze pays tribute to the Vancouver Whitecaps soccer team, incorporating both the

Operating hours are Thursday and Friday from 6-8 p.m., Saturdays from noon to 8 p.m., and Sundays and holiday Mondays from noon to 4 p.m. The last ticket sold is at closing time, and everyone is given an opportunity to finish the maze. B.C. communities care. So do the Black Press newspapers that directly serve those communities. Reflecting and raising awareness of that caring spirit is part of the core mandate of every Black Press community newspaper, including the Cloverdale Reporter. This publication is now part of an exciting new initiative undertaken by Black Press in British Columbia that works to further communicate the good work being done in communities, and provide a new opportunity for organizations and individuals to tap into that fountain of caring. BlackPress4Good.com is an online platform that brings the popular and successful phenomenon of crowd funding to Black Press readers. Charitable projects, causes and campaigns will now be able to deliver their message on the community level, safely and securely, in an online format to reach the vast digital audience and funding sources. “Crowd funding provides a means for individuals, organizations and businesses to raise money by appealing to the public,” explained Andrew Franklin, project lead for Black Press. “This platform is community focused and will be enhanced through the power of your local newspaper. The audience will be very aware of the campaigns and it will be up to the public as to whether they make a donation or not. Early indications show very positive signs. In addition to the exposure through your community media, the success of the campaigns will also rely on active social media participation. Anyone can set up a campaign, however there are safeguards in place to ensure each campaign is legitimate,” Franklin

The Cloverdale

said. Black Press launched this new community service in partnership with FundRazr, the platform at the roots of BlackPress4Good.com. More than 40,000 people and groups around the world have raised in excess of $50 million via FundRazr. Fundraisers register online via the link on the Reporter’s home page, provide information about their objectives and fund recipients, and their project profiles are then posted on a dedicated website page to reach out to readers, who can monitor the progress of a specific cause. Supporters make their donations via PayPal, a secure and well-established digital payment system. Under 10 per cent of the total amount raised will be levied by FundRazr, PayPal and Black Press to recover the administration, support, marketing and hosting costs associated with this initiative. Readers will also have the opportunity to be inspired and touched by the good news content of the Black Press 4Good blog, at blogs.blackpress4good.com. This site’s content is solely based on the good news stories being reported in Black Press papers across the province. Be introduced to the countless individuals and organizations who are making their communities better places to live. BlackPress4good.com and facebook.com/blackpress4good have been created to help channel and enhance that caring spirit. Black Press is Canada’s largest independently owned newspaper company, with more than 150 titles in print and online in British Columbia, Alberta, Washington, Hawaii, California and Ohio. – Staff

B.C. communities care. Anyone can set up a campaign, however there are safeguards in place to ensure each campaign is legitimate,” Franklin

– Staff
