Kyle: How are your students handling this year?

Right before the start of October, Purple Press interviewed the guidance counselors, Melisa Winn, Felicia Dobbs, Kathleen Penland, and Pam Cornelison, and asked them about their jobs. After humorously answering our schoolrelated questions, the counselors were questioned about their plans for Halloween. Ten minutes later, the interview was over.

Mrs. Winn: So far so good, I have a lot in Night School and CCC.

Kyle: Okay, so I am going to start you off with eight questions. Half of them are about guidance, the other half are about your plans for Halloween.

Kyle: How about the juniors ?

The first question is how is the school year so far? Mrs. Penland: Good… Guidance Counselors: All laugh Mrs. Winn: It’s been really fast. It’s already October. We had a good start. Mrs. Cornelison: It was much smoother than last year. Kyle: Have there been any changes to the Guidance Policies?

Kyle: Mrs. Dobbs? How are those sophomores? Mrs. Dobbs: They are starting to adjust I think the transition from The Freshman Academy to the High School is difficult for some. We are getting them there.

Mrs. Penland: They are preparing for post secondary for their classes, they are settling into life at the High School. Kyle: Back to Mrs. Dobbs, what is it like working with a brand new group of students after losing your seniors? Mrs. Dobbs: Its difficult because by the time the seniors graduated I knew all of their names, I knew them. So now I am having to relearn names, stories and all that good stuff. It will take some time but I’ll get there.

Mrs. Cornelison: Sophomores have to have 24 and a half (credits) when they added health they added another half credit.

Kyle: And then Mrs. Cornelison what it is like “Guiding everyone” Guidance Counselors: All laugh

I am very fortunate to have the staff that we have they work very hard. Kyle: How have your classes changed and evolved since they were sophomores? Mrs. Penland: I think mine are for sure taking it more seriously; they are actually coming in and asking me “ How do I make up things that I fell behind in last year?” They are asking me I am not chasing them. So it’s made a big difference in the level of maturity. They are really taking more responsibility. Mrs. Cornelison: ( Jokingly) It takes a year to train them. How about you Mrs. Winn? Mrs. Winn: Good I would say seriousness,

reality of you are running out of time. It’s almost over. Kyle: How are the sophomores handling the High School campus this year compared to last years? Mrs. Dobbs: It is definitely an adjustment period. Mrs. Cornelison: Going from one school where they are all together to trying to blend with Juniors and seniors in High School is difficult. Mrs. Winn: They have more freedoms ( Than the Freshman academy) We are definitely a open campus with all of the buildings, it would be easy to walk off campus. So adjusting to freedom. Kyle: So that was the guidance questions, now onto the fun stuff.

Everyone: Laughs What are your plans for Halloween, do you have a big ol’ party going on?

Mrs. Winn: We are usually witches ( Devious laughter) We call ourselves the guidance witches.

Mrs. Winn: This Halloween is a special Halloween because the Wildcats will be going to Carlsbad.

Kyle: Well I don’t see why that would make sense ( Sarcasm)

Mrs. Dobbs: Lets talk about what we are going to do at school. ( While Laughing) We make baked goods and give them out to the staff, kind of like an open house. Mrs. Cornelison: We have a Halloween party for the faculty, and for OUR special helpers. Kyle: Oh…Sweet. Mrs. Winn: All sweet, all suga suga. Kyle: So is there a guidance counselor theme for the counselors.

Mrs. Winn: Good answer, Kyle. Everyone: Laughter Mrs. Winn: We will probably be witches this year. We are good at that. Kyle: That is all I have for you, so do you have any inspirational words for your classes? Mrs. Cornelison: All classes especially seniors, Finish strong. Mrs. Winn: …Just finish. Everyone: All laughs Kyle: Alright that’s all I have for you. Thanks for your time.

Snuggle in a Blanket and Enjoy...

It is getting closer and closer to Halloween; know what that means? Horror films, and scary movie specials will be all over the television. Is that not exciting? Making some popcorn, adding some caramel to it; so you can put on some scary calories, pun intended. Curling up on the couch

turn, and all of the Saw movies are usually very popular around this time of year. Snuggle in a blanket and enjoy a couple hours of fright on this very special night. If there is anyone who doesn’t particularly like blood and gore the alternative is Disney channel and Cartoon Network, Casper the friendly

ghost, Halloween town, Hocus Pocus, and The Nightmare Before Christmas. All of them are wonderful Halloween Classics, as I said before, if you aren’t into blood and guts turn on a silly movie. This is the one time of year that you can turn on the television and instantly find a Halloween movie you can enjoy. Turn off all

of the lights and get your adrenaline rushing; you can get the real impact of it all. So get all your treats and hot drinks ready for this lovely evening because I promise you will enjoy it if that is something you’re into. Aside from all the old Horror movies we all know and love, how about the new movies that recently

came out, Annabelle for instance. Rumor has it that it is extremely good; it is probably intensely scary for those who are afraid of dolls. Well, everyone enjoy the extensive hours of scary movie fun this month. Remember to be attentive, you never know who could be standing behind you.

Let's Talk : Our View

Youth Becoming the Muse

Michael Lynch

Staff Writer We all know at least one fashion designer, it could be Marc Jacobs, possibly Donatella Versace, maybe even Tom Ford. Do you ever think, where do these extraordinary people ever get inspiration? Well, it depends. Some get it from cultures, colors, or maybe even textures! Who knows! It different for all of them, but from recent interveiws a lot of designers have been getting their inspiration from the youth, ages ranging from six year olds to eightteen year olds. All of these ages come up with new ways to express themselves as a human being, and thats what major fashion designers are loving recently! Recently, today's

Jerrika Lopez-Wilson Michael Lynch Co-Editor Staff Writer October, or should we say Oddtober. Why would we say that, you ask? Well it is because in the month of October there is a celebration every day of the month, which could be celebrated anywhere! We will only be talking about the ones that are celebrated here. The celebrations are odd and diverse. The celebrations range from Name Your Car Day to Frankenstein Day to Tell-a-Story Day. These are just random fun ideas to get through the month of October all leading up to October 31st, better known as Halloween but also known as Increase your Psychic Powers Day. October 2nd it Name Your Car Day. Who wouldn’t want to do this? Your car is like your baby and it deserves a name

most famous designers have been referring to toys as their inspirations! Such as Moschino showcasing his new "Think Pink! Shop The Dream," a clothing line which was based on a toy that we all know of, no matter you hate or love her... Barbie! Moschino also has several youth clothing lines that were also released this year such as their McDoanlds based Clothes as well with their Spongebob Squarepants Items! If you think about it, it is all based on our childhood memories! So as we pay more attention to these things ,you can realize how this is being based off us. If you look more at your day-to-day life you can be a trendsetter. Some how, some way! You could protentially be inspiring fashion indus-

tries to base their creations off of something you put together yourself. Just keep that thought in mind! Would it not be cool for your own trend to be featured all over the world? Just think of your creation being seen all over the world in the major fashion houses, such as New York, Milan, and Paris. All of these cities jsut recently hosted a major fashion week, which took place late last month and early this month! Better yet seen by famous people! David Beckham? How about Rihanna? No? Then Anna Wintour herself could even see your trends! If you don't know who Anna Wintour is, she is editor-in-chief of Vogue Magazine which is the number one best-selling fashion magazine! Just let all those thoughts sink in. Some of you

may know a little someone who is named Marc Jacobs, if you don't know who he is, he is an international famous designer who not only creates vivacious clothing, but also produces products, such as make-up, and perfume! Marc Jacobs has created some of the most wonder smelling perfumes of this time! What's so great about Marc Jacobs you ask and how he applies to the youth? Well every single one of his models that walk the runway are eightteen years or younger! It is incredible how capivated he is by the youth of our time. Just because I have only been mentioning fashion designers, does not mean others are not inspired by the youth too. Musicians, comedians, even political leaders get inspiration from

the youth for thier lyrics, jokes, and speeches just as fashion designers get ideas for their clothing. I am in no way saying only people who create glamorous clothing that people will payn arm and a leg to wear! Some clothing is quite expensive, and everyone has different thoughts on high end fashion items! Some may think that it is made up of only the most pure materials that where purified by volcanos in Asia! Some may even think it is so expensive because only celebrities should be able to wear these items since they are the only ones who are financially able to purchase one of these amazing items! Others more than likely have no need for it and do not care if they have it or not! It's just up to you at the end of the day!

Even though designers create the entire look, we are the muse behind their entire creation! At the end of the day fashion itself is about originality, and creating the look you want yourself, rather than following what others are putting out for you to wear! Fashion week is a yearly covention that is debuted in the biggest fashion cities in the world such as New York, Paris, and Milan! The designers that are showcasing their art on the runway are expressing themselves as an artist, and revealing how they view our generation. Just express yourself and the world will follow your lead, no matter what direction you go!

"Ain't Nothing Tougher Than a Wildcat!" Purple Press, Sept. 23, 2014

Starting off the season right, the varsity football team created a bond like no other team has had before, creating their own title for themselves that now all the students refer to them as “Squad.” This bond has created a family, that no matter win or

lose, they will do all they can for one another and it shows in every game they play. Even though the scoreboard has not always showed the fans what they want to see, it does show improvement in every game our boys have played from their very first, game to their most recent game against the Grants' Pirates. Each game the Varsity plays

they gain experience, strength in their skills, and trust in their teammates, getting them closer and closer to their goal, State! “Ain’t nothing tougher than a Clovis Wildcat!” Words from Coach Davis said to the boys’ right before running the helmet onto the field, said to be the

most encouraging words that could be said before entering the stadium. Under the Friday night lights, with hundreds of people all focused on every move you’re about to make, must be nerve racking, and if words can take those nerves away they must be powerful. One of the six captains on the varsity football team, Isaiah Callahan, has a motto of his own to encourage his team, that is, “Stay Together, Play Together.” This seems to be the motto the team is living by shown by the incredible bond that has been created throughout the season. In order to succeed, everyone on the team needs to play for the team and not to just

highlight themselves; a lesson that every team has to learn, and these boys made this their biggest strength against any competitor that comes their way. The team already has the bond, determination, and the will power, all they need is to move on from past mistakes, learn from them, conquer their own doubts, and ignore the doubts of others. With each new game there is a new chance to prove those who doubt wrongly, considering previous missteps as lessons instead of defeats could potentially be the boost our Varsity football team needs to make it to state. The Wildcat football team works so

hard every day to make Clovis proud, the least we can do is cheer them on to victory. They deserve our full support, win or lose. It’s unfair to expect them to rise above all the negativity and come out with a win when everyone including their own classmates are pushing them down. A team can have all the talent in the world, but without support it’s nearly impossible to go far. The amount of talent on the Varsity team is outstanding and their bond is impeccable. This season shows so much promise; the boys have victory standing right in front of them, and they’re running towards it.

time. These next tips are going to be for the get-togethers. This happens to many times, false eyelashes on top of your real ones. Ladies, let me help you. Sometimes, when you put them on you cans till see your real eyelashes. Now that is a problem, here is a simple solutions: put mascara on both the eyelashes this way your real eyelashes go up into the fake ones and you can’t tell the difference. Now to remove these eyelashes you have to use warm water to hot water and the water will just dissolve the glue and gently remove them from an angle. Now if you want

to stand out on Halloween, this is a tip for you. One thing that has always bugged me on Halloween is seeing the same costumes. Naturally it is going happen but you can dress the simplest costume up to make it shine. Here’s how: buy a can of glitter hairspray. You can buy it at Walmart, Walgreens, sally’s or they might even sell it at a dollar store. Once you have bought it go outside and drenched yourself in it. This way if you dress like oh say, a witch, people can’t say I have seen that costume already. But what they can say is “Oh I seen another witch but their costume wasn’t like yours.” Once you have

on the glitter there is just something about it that makes it pop and that is what you want. Don’t forget to take your make –up for your costume or more spray because half way through the night you don’t want people wondering, “ What are they supposed to be.” Make this year’s costume standout. Make people think to themselves “ that is clever why didn’t I think of that one”. After all this is the only day a year where you can be someone your not or to be someone your too scared to be all the other days a year without being judged.

Make Your Halloween Look POP!

October 31st, better known as Halloween, is coming soon and what kid isn’t excited? What makes this year even more exciting is it’s on a Friday, which means the kids can stay out and trick-or-treat longer because there is no school the next day. The countdown starts today. 10 more days! Everybody loves Halloween but dreads the next day. Imagine this, it’s Friday October 31st, you went to your friends party and dressed like a cat so naturally you drew on a black nose with whiskers and sprayed

your hair pitch black with the color spray. The next morning you have to work, so you get up take a shower. You wash your hair until your water turns black from the night before, you scrub your face until it feels like it is going to peel off. You get out of the shower, and you look in the mirror and you have black from your hair all over your neck, ears, and on top of your forehead right before your scalp, you can still see your whiskers on your face, they’re faded but visible. What are you going to do? You have to go to work. I got the answers for your Halloween troubles. This trick is used

Use a pea to a dime size of lotion and apply to your makeup, use a cotton ball/pad or even toilet paper will work and wipe away in a upward motion. The particles in the lotion will get under the make-up and lift it from the bottom up. The trick for the color spray is to get Vaseline and apply it to your hairline, neck and ears. Before you spray the color. Once your satisfied with the color, use a towel or toilet paper to wipe away the Vaseline. This works like a charm every

Think Pink

Mackenzie Credle Staff Writer

Have you seen an abundance of pink this month? That’s because it’s National Breast Cancer Awareness Month! This is put together by major foundations and charities supporting early detection and a cure for breast cancer. National Breast Cancer Awareness Month started back in 1989, and hasn’t stopped yet. The goal of this month is to encourage women to get checked, promote early detection, and motivate the people who have or had beaten breast cancer. From the cool history to the events showing support, there’s only one way to think about this month, and that is to Think Pink! National Breast Cancer Awareness Month was made known in the early 1990. The pink ribbon is the national symbol for breast cancer and showing awareness. It was first used

by The Komen Foundation, when they passed the ribbons out to runners in a race for breast cancer survivors. Evelyn Lauder used it as a symbol for the Breast Cancer Research Center, Now the color pink in October is common to show support for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. For people who have breast cancer or know someone with it, October is a special month of hope Now, in 2014, there are plenty of events going on to raise money for research. Just an hour

and a half away they had a Komen Race for the Cure in Lubbock, where participants enter to run and walk for the cure. And in our own school we have different teams wearing pink to support the cure, such as the soccer team having pink games and the football team wearing pink socks, shoes, and wristbands during football games. On a wide scale, almost all sports teams this time of year will wear pink, like in NCAA football and the NFL. Even though October is almost over, there is one big way you can get involved, and that is to donate! You can donate to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. These charities let you donate any amount on their website, making it easy to donate. Donating to any charities for breast cancer awareness is a great way to Think Pink!
