CLAIRE PELLEGRINI Claire Pellegrini is a recent graduate from the Interior Design program at Madison College, earning her Associates Degree in the field. Prior to pursing a degree in interior design, she graduated from UW-Milwaukee with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education but has since changed gears to design and is loving it! Earning top marks throughout her educational career, Claire graduated with honors and a 4.0 GPA achieving a long-term goal she set for herself upon beginning the program. Eager to launch her professional career in the field, she strives to gain full time employment as an Interior Designer with either a Residential or Commercial design firm. With her keen design sense and space planning skills, she will be a great addition to any team, bringing creativity and innovative ideas to life! Claire excels at balancing form, function and budget considerations to deliver beautiful, custom design solutions to her clients. Claire loves the challenge of remodeling and renovating outdated or older spaces into something fresh and new, finding a unique way to put the remodeling puzzle pieces back together again. Along these lines, one of her favorite hobbies is to explore thrift shops and flea markets, hoping to find unique and one-of-a-kind treasures to add to her personal collection. Taking this love of revitalizing the old and making it new again is an ideal close to her heart that translates to her design approach as well. This, paired with her strong Italian heritage has led her to choose the Italian word for “treasure” - “TESORO” as a key feature of her personal brand.

RESIDENTIAL The Beck family moved into their 120 year old home 19 years ago after immediately falling in love with the charm and the history of their home. The Becks are big time animal lovers (with five cats, two dogs and a chicken coop), they are a family that loves to spend time outdoors or all together in the kitchen cooking, crafting or doing homework, and they have a true love of Willie Nelson. These clients love spending time together as a whole and needed their quaint home to be able to allow them to do so a little more comfortably as the children continue to grow older. For this concept, I took to heart the aspects that they needed the home to be more spacious to accommodate the family’s needs and hobbies while also staying intimate enough that they will easily be able to spend time together. Additionally, as the Becks intend for this to become their “forever” home, the design concept needed to keep in mind the potential to add aging-in-place accommodations down the road if they become necessary. DESIGN CONCEPT: The design concept for the Beck Residence draws inspiration from the family as a whole – who they are, their hobbies and their interests. By incorporating their love of nature through the use of natural materials, colors and tones derived from nature, along with live edge wood storage solutions, this design concept triggers feelings of comfort and peacefulness for the family. Along with the family’s love of nature, they are also animal lovers, with cats, dogs, a guinea pig, and a chicken coop all in one household. With this in mind, specialized storage and designated “pet areas” will be included in the design solution to allow the family spaces that will better serve their needs, while still accommodating their furry friends by creating more usable and multi-purposed spaces for all to enjoy. Through the use of a variety of soft, tactile textures and natural elements, this design solution will allow the Beck family to cherish and preserve their home’s history and charm while making it unique and their own.
CONCEPTUAL SKETCH - KITCHEN
This design solution meets the client’s needs because it gets at the heart of the problem they have with their current home –enough space for the family to be comfortable together. This solution works for the Beck Family right now, while also looking to the future as their children continue to age, with college coming quickly, and then eventually they will be starting to have families of their own. With this large-scale home remodel there will be ample space for visits, overnight stays and even family dinners. This is an extensive design solution but is prepared to suit their needs right now and going forward as this will be Heidi & Ty’s forever home. Additionally, with the updates made, accommodations could easily be made to allow for aging in place in the home as needed. With their love of classic “white, farmhouse” style mixed with their eclectic tastes, this design solution is tailored to meet all of their needs!

KITCHEN & BATH While my Residential project presented my design concept for the home in its entirety as well as a focusing on the Dining Room/Mudroom/Back Entry areas, this project concentrated on the space that was most crucial to the Beck’s during this renovation – the Kitchen. The Kitchen serves as their family’s “hub” it was the area that both parents were adamant about reworking and redesigning as it plays such a large role in their family’s dynamic. For this concept, I focused on what the family’s specific needs were for the Kitchen – more storage, more seating and more countertop space. Having both bakers and chefs in the family, the Kitchen needed to be able to accommodate both styles of cooking, sometimes simultaneously. This space also needed to include a homework area for the kids and hangout area. It also needed to provide seating options for the family to work or guests to relax when the family entertains. Finally, the Becks expressed how they wished they were able to entertain more but with space constraints were not able to do so – this Kitchen redesign opened up to the rest of the home to accommodate their goal of hosting more guests, maybe even a holiday! Additionally, with their love of cooking and baking, the Kitchen needs to accommodate both types of cooking to occur, sometimes simultaneously by different chefs. This design solution meets the needs of the Beck family because it achieves all of their goals – enough space for all to be able to utilize the Kitchen in their own ways, simultaneously so the family can still all be together. Additionally, the extra seating allows for entertaining guests – the Kitchen opens up to the Living Room on the east side and the Dining Room on the west, so overflow seating is readily available while keeping everyone together. The bank of cabinetry along the south wall provides additional space for food service during dinners while allowing additional storage for all of the family’s needs. Keeping consistency throughout the home, this “white, farmhouse” Kitchen mixed with their eclectic artwork fits right into their causal, laid-back demeanor while still honoring the charm and history of their home.

COMMERCIAL Shoreline Crossings is designed to serve as a small-scale extension to the Mount Rainier Technical College campus, in the north Seattle suburb of Shoreline, Washington. This campus is targeted to cater to online students, adult and non-traditional students, and part-time students who are already a part of the workforce. For this project, I addressed the need for functional, flexible work environments for this diverse population allowing opportunities for collaborative or individual learning through adaptable and mobile classroom settings. Additionally, these areas needed to provide technology to support and promote active learning that would cater to the various learning styles of the students that attend this campus. Finally, the campus design needed to work for and support its students through strategic layouts, accommodating for flex in traffic flows, as well as provide a welcoming environment where students are motivated and encouraged to succeed in their learning goals. MATERIAL & FINISH SELECTIONS Incorporating a wide variety of learning, studying and gathering settings, the use of mobile furniture and providing ample choices for users, this design solution meets the varying needs of the students and staff at Shoreline Crossings. Utilizing movable furniture, spaces can be reconfigured easily to suit the needs of the multitude of users, By creating spaces that can serve multiple functions and a variety of users – those in attendance at Shoreline Crossings will be able to work collaboratively with peers and instructors throughout the space. Spaces are created for individual work, small collaborative teams and large scale classroom learning. Students can decide which areas best suit their learning style and utilize the space accordingly. From the built-in benches for private collaboration nestled underneath the open Stepped Seating connecting the 10th and 11th floors, to the cozy cloud furniture for individual studying and the collaborative seating areas along the windows that allow the students to take in the beautiful views of the city allows the students at Shoreline Crossings to engage with the space and create meaningful learning experiences. RESIDENTIAL The current Innkeepers at Fountain Prairie Inn, the Priske couple, are ready to move on the next chapter of their life and intend to sell their 120 year old Victorian homestead. With retirement looming, they hope to move closer to town to a home that will better allow for them to age in place and avoid the steep and narrow staircases of their current dwelling. The Inn has been beautifully restored over the years, with the first two floors finished and regularly hosting guests. The third floor is a currently unfinished space that, in its prime many years ago, would host dances in the ballroom and entertain a multitude of guests throughout the space. The couple’s goal is to set plans in motion with renderings and a master plan to turn this third floor space into an “Owner’s Suite” – opening up another bedroom on the second floor for guest rentals. Ideally, they are hoping to target a younger couple who is interested in restoration and keeping up the traditions of the Inn, including caring for the livestock. For this project, I created a sprawling Owner’s Suite, incorporating a long forgotten loft area to accommodate a larger suite, making it more of an apartment feel to give the owners of this Inn their own private quarters for some much needed peace and relaxation after a long day of working at the Inn. PROGRAMS ULTILIZED AutoCAD Photoshop

THIRD FLOOR PLAN WITH LOFT - BEFORE THIRD FLOOR PLAN WITH LOFT - AFTER
DESIGN CONCEPT: At Fountain Prairie Inn, the third floor Owner’s Suite will be designed to maintain the home’s history and integrity while providing potential buyers with a glimpse of the potential of this expansive space. Tying in some of the historical Victorian influences along with the farmhouse setting will serve as a source of inspiration for the space’s overall aesthetic while also bringing in some more modern touches in order to have mass appeal, especially for the Client’s targeted younger demographic. Careful planning and space considerations will allow both the Client and potential buyers to envision what this unfinished space can be, as it is a true diamond in the rough. Opening the space up into a more open concept floor plan, the space will feel much larger and more like a beautiful third floor apartment. By removing walls, light will be able to travel more freely throughout the space, helping to illuminate the space and unify the areas. Utilizing the loft space for their sleeping area and closet, the floor underneath gains even more living space for new homeowners to relax after a long day of entertaining their Inn guests. Materials and finishes will relate back to the existing and renovated spaces, tying in elements of Victorian and farmhouse touches with a modernized twist in order to keep the space harmonious with the rest of the home.
This design solution meets the client’s expectations offering a concept that has duality – it showcases the space’s potential to prospective Inn buyers while also meeting the client’s needs if they do end up wanting to stay at the Inn. This solution shows what could be made possible with this “diamond in the rough” space and how it can function as an owner’s suite. Working much like a one-bedroom apartment, this suite includes a kitchen with large pantry for storage, an office space for the Inn’s various clerical work, private sleeping quarters away from other guests, and their own living space to unwind after a long day as both Innkeepers and farmers. As the decision weighs heavily on the current owners on whether or not to sell their beloved property, this design solution helps to offer some clarity in the tremendous potential of their third floor space and what could be possible as they make their decision.

KITCHEN & BATH Having moved in about a year ago, the Nordess’ are eager to put their own stamp on their 1998 Ranch style home. This retirement aged couple has plans to remodel their Kitchen and their Master Bathroom in order to update and make the spaces more functional to suit their needs. Describing her style to be “Farmhouse meets Old World”, the couple loves Americana and a somewhat Country feel – wanting to inject some of these elements into their remodel. Working with these two spaces, the Nordess’ were adamant that some pieces would not be changeable in order to keep consistency throughout the house and to help to keep the budget under control. The golden oak trim would need to stay as it is prevalent throughout the home, additionally the Kitchen sink wall of cabinetry cannot change due to the custom cabinetry and the fact that the couple disliked the idea of adding it to a landfill, wanting to be environmentally conscious whenever possible. In addition, they requested spaces to be able to accommodate their grandchildren’s frequent visits, as well as a kennel area for their new Dachshund puppy. DESIGN CONCEPT: For the Nordess Residence Kitchen & Master Bath projects, the design concept focuses on addressing the needs of the homeowners without sacrificing form or function. Through the repetitious use of materials throughout the home paired with the reuse and salvage of cabinetry helped create unity between these spaces and the rest of the home. Utilizing a color scheme that coordinates with their existing color palate helps to seamlessly blend the remodel with the existing home finishes. The Kitchen will feature additional storage, a better flow between the Kitchen and Dining spaces and additional seating for the grandkids and puppy. The Bathroom will feature a vanity raised to standard height, a larger walk-in shower, and a tub that will still allow for access to the two corner windows.

KITCHEN In the Nordess Kitchen, this design solution meets both the needs and the wants of the client through creative use of the space and a clever new arrangement for traffic flow. The Kitchen design offers the homeowners more space for entertaining their large extended family, as they often host pizza night at their home. Additional seating and a long buffet set up adjacent to the dining table allows for entertaining large groups with ease. This design offers safe seating with built-in window seating for their grandchildren when they visit and a dining table in a more accessible location. Furthermore, this solution incorporates many of the existing cabinets in the home (with a fresh coat of paint) to provide these eco-conscious homeowners some peace of mind that they will not be adding to a landfill. This solution fits the needs of the couple, with enough prep and cooking space for the pair to work simultaneously.

MASTER BATH For the Nordess Master Bath, this design solution works to alleviate some of the stresses and headaches derived from their existing suite’s layout. Specifically, by incorporating a smaller scale claw foot tub in place of their built-in with deck whirlpool. The clients are able to gain easier access to the two existing windows while also being able to bathe the grandchildren when they are on overnight visits. Additionally, the new, larger walk-in shower will allow the homeowners ease of use with its zero threshold and wider capacity, making it much more comfortable than before. With the standard cabinet height vanity, these soon to be retirees will no longer have to stoop over the old, low vanity when getting dressed in the morning. By working this concept around how the space would function, budgetary considerations, and the best flow of usage for the homeowners, it was decided that the toilet would remain in its original position to avoid the added plumbing expenses. Overall, this Master Bath balances form and function to meet the current and future needs of the clients.

RESIDENTIAL The Parrish family was in the process of designing their newly built home and wanted to put their own stamp on things in order to avoid the cookie cutter look. With their own unique styles and tastes, the family has a tendency to lean towards an “Industrial Chic” style and wanted their home to truly reflect their personalities. For this project, I was asked to create an all-inclusive Master Suite for Rachel and Sara Parrish. Taking into consideration their love of cooking, a collection of cowboy boots, and the hectic lifestyle that both women lead, I created a space where they would be able to escape their responsibilities of the outside world and unwind after a long day. With calming, muted colors, special consideration for their specific needs, and a strong attention to detail, I’ve created a luxurious retreat that combines form and function into a cohesive space for them to enjoy together.
