Mission for the Profession Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) of Alberta are progressive nursing professionals who provide quality, safe, competent, and ethical care in collaboration with clients, families and other providers. • LPNs provide holistic person-centred care including physical, psychosocial and spiritual health. • LPNs advocate for and respect client choice and dignity. • LPNs are accountable for the care they provide.
The College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA) is the regulatory organization for the profession of Licensed Practical Nurses. Guided by CLPNA’s Mandate and Vision, and through environmental assessment, this Strategic Plan was developed to ensure the goal of regulatory excellence. CLPNA continually strives to achieve this goal by regulating and leading the profession in a manner that protects and serves the public through excellence in practical nursing.

Legislative and regulatory changes enable the optimization of LPNs. Basic and advanced education prepares LPNs to meet the needs of changing demographics in a transformed healthcare system. LPNs as opinion leaders are influencing public policy for health care reform. LPNs are early adopters of technology that contriutes to an effective and efficient health system. LPNs inform the profession through research, publication and mentorship. LPNs embrace and lead interprofessional collaboration focused on person-centred care. LPNs transform their own practice through empowered professionalism. LPNs are integral partners in a quality system. LPNs practice evidence-informed nursing.

Enhance governing policies to support LPNs in providing safe quality care. Require and facilitate LPN competence for an evolving system. Influence optimization of LPNs throughout the health system. Promote leadership and collaboration by LPNs in practice.

Ensure registration and conduct processes are based on principles of procedural fairness, transparency and due diligence. Enhance LPN competence in relevant legislation, professional standards and ethics. Collaborate with provincial, national, international regulators and other health organizations in support of regulatory excellence.
Research and Innovation Participate in research, innovation, and new initiatives that contribute to the health system and the Licensed Practical Nurse profession. 3.1 3.2 3.3
Lead and facilitate research activities to advance knowledge about the LPN profession. Collaborate with stakeholders and LPNs to build capacity to translate and utilize evidence in practice.
