KAWASAKI UNVEILS NEW RIVER MARK CORPORATE IDENTITY SYMBOL
A
We’ll be seeing a lot more of the River Mark – seen in recent times on the H2 range of bikes.
company with over 120 years of heritage, Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI), encompasses manufacturing enterprises focusing on sea, land, air and even into deep space. Following the announcement of the creation of a new company within the Kawasaki group created to solely focus on the manufacture of motorcycles and stand-alone engines, Kawasaki Motors Ltd is also rolling out a new corporate identity which reflects both the heritage aspect of this global enterprise and to symbolise optimism of the future. The River Mark – which is a stylised representation of the Japanese character meaning River – first appeared in the 1870’s at which time it was seen on the flags of ships owned by the Kawasaki Tsukiji Shipyard, the forerunner to Kawasaki Heavy Industries. Being formed by Shōzō Kawasaki in 1878, the company first concentrated on ship building fulfilling the desire for Japan to export goods, and for the island nation to take its place on the international trading arena. With a solid reputation for marine innovation and construction quality, the ambitious company soon expanded into civil engineering, rolling stock and steam engine manufacture
finally breaking the bounds of earth by creating its first aircraft. At key points during the century plus evolution of this vast company with its global reach and reputation, the River Mark has been used, its application being restricted to Kawasaki’s most significant products of their time. In the modern era, the River Mark once more came to prominence as it appeared boldly on the cowlings of the unique to Kawasaki, Ninja H2 and Ninja H2R machines powered by their in-house designed and manufactured supercharged engines unveiled in 2015. Commenting on the roll out of the new logo, Mr Masaya Tsuruno, Managing Director of Kawasaki Motors Europe said: “The world has changed immeasurably in the century plus history of the Kawasaki company – none more so than in the past few years. As we roll out our new corporate identity with the River Mark at its core, we look to take a next, bold step in terms of technology and engineering as well as enhancing the lives of countless people around the world with a focus on sustainability and emerging green technologies. While some things change others remain constant such as our commitment to be the best in our chosen fields; the River Mark is a fitting symbol of this commitment.”

Ten EV or Hybrid motorcycles by 2025 is the new goal
KAWASAKI’S NEW COMPANY, NEW DIRECTION, AND NEW PRODUCTS
T
he President of the newly formed Kawasaki Motors, Ltd., Mr Hiroshi Ito, delivered a keynote speech at a recent press conference covering not just the details of a new company but also outlining other important updates. Created to give greater flexibility speed and autonomy of decision making, the new company is being seen as core to its ability to react quickly to market trends and respond with not just new products but also harness emerging motive and safety technologies. Examples unveiled both during the briefing event and in the recent past include an EV two-wheeler, a Hybrid motorcycle combining gasoline and electric power and first sight of a development motor based on a Ninja H2 power plant fuelled by hydrogen. Kawasaki Motors, Ltd. will concentrate its energies exclusively on motorcycles, off-road four-wheeled vehicles, Jet Ski personal watercraft and engines while striving towards carbon neutrality combining all the knowledge and heritage accrued over

decades of production and the desire to meet new challenges with new forms of motive power. Stating that the new corporate goal is to introduce ten EV or Hybrid motorcycles by 2025, plans were also unveiled for the development of five new advanced fuel off-road four-wheeled vehicles in the same time frame. The new company is not simply about the product itself, but also the development of complementary technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, integration of radar technology and customer-centric interfaces such as the Kawasaki’s Rideology App which connects the customer’s smartphone to their vehicle via Bluetooth. Kawasaki Motors, Ltd. plans to introduce an average of 16 new twowheel models per year by 2025 focusing on premium areas of stable demand in terms of products with marketing activities promoting traditional and innovation. For electric and hybrid vehicles the plan is equally ambitious with a commitment to unveil 10 new models by 2025.

ninja h2 sx Going back to the future for 2022, the Ninja H2 SX is a ground-breaking new machine that offers more tech in one bike than perhaps every other machine combined. A true sport touring ‘tour de force’, the bike features an Advanced Rider Assistance System developed by Bosch. Front and rear-mounted radars offer a completely new level of information and reassurance. The Ninja H2 SX provides forward collision warning technology and adaptive cruise control via the front radar unit, located below the new, compact LED headlamp. At the rear, a second radar is at the forefront of blind spot detection,

“revamped with the most advanced technology on any motorcycle” informing riders when traffic nearby is invading your space. Both have been designed to not be intrusive enough to distract the rider. The forward collision warning comes in the form of a series of red lights flashing above the meter panel, while the adaptive cruise control will adjust your speed and distance accordingly as traffic builds up. When traffic clears, you can then resume your original desired cruise. Equally as unobtrusive, the blind spot detection system will warn the rider via an illuminated orange light on the rearview mirror – and the bike can even tell when you are riding in Europe,
If you’re heading to Motorcycle Live or the London Motorcycle Show, you’ll be able to check out some of the latest models joining the Kawasaki range. If you can’t make it along, we thought we would take a closer look at the new models joining the 2022 road and off-road range…
The future is here! The 2022 Ninja H2 SX features forward collision warning technology and adaptive cruise control via the front radar unit, located below the new LED headlamp
switching the detection to the other side! Alongside the radar assisted technology, the Ninja H2 SX features the popular supercharged engine, while an SE version will also come with Brembo front brake callipers and Showa Skyhook suspension. Integrated luggage remains an option, while KIPASS keyless ignition also makes a welcome return, alongside tyre pressure monitoring and Vehicle Hold Assist. Further innovation comes with the Emergency Stop Signal, which will see the rear brake light automatically flash during sudden deceleration. Finally, the 2022 Ninja H2 SX features a new SPIN multiple app. Created by Bosch, this offers a whole new level of infotainment, allowing riders to access an entire vista of apps, including weather, machine status updates and navigation. Appearing on the large 6.5” TFT dash, it can be easily controlled via the left handlebar. All of this comes in addition to the cornering lights, launch control, traction control, integrated braking, quickshifter and rider modes of the previous version; ensuring it is not only the best sports tourer Kawasaki has ever produced but maybe the best bar none in the entire market.

The entry-level Versys 1000 now sits alongside the Versys 1000 S and SE
versys 1000 After the overwhelming response to the Versys 1000 S and SE models last year, the model range is increasing further in 2022 with the addition of a standard entry-level version. Designed to give riders on a more limited budget the opportunity to discover why thousands of riders have such an affinity with the Versys concept. Offering the same base specification as the S and SE models in terms of engine and chassis, the entry-level model does not feature extras such as cornering lights, TFT meter panel, integrated riding modes and highly durable paint. It does, however, offer accessory options such as quickshifter, large windscreen, heated grips, hand guards and pannier/top case luggage. The standard Versys 1000 will be available in Candy Lime Green/Metallic Spark Black.

2022 Versys 650 now features traction control among its new features
Also new for 2022 is a revised Versys 650. Retaining the successful basic layout that riders love, the machine features innovative KTRC Kawasaki Traction Control. Designed to enhance sport riding performance and give riders complete peace of mind, the KTRC addition offers two switchable modes designed to suit any riding situation. Mode 1 helps to manage traction while cornering, while Mode 2 provides earlier intervention for those situations where grip may be reduced. Also new for 2022 is the addition of TFT colour instrumentation and smartphone connectivity. The instrumentation helps

z900 se
z900rs se yellow ball The first all-new model we announced for 2022 was the eye-catching Z900RS SE ‘Yellow Ball’. Continuing the retro style of Z900RS (which itself is getting a three colour makeover for 2022), the Yellow Ball brings back the iconic colour scheme of the 1972 Super Four Z1. Although the colourway is the first thing that riders will notice, the Z900RS SE features an impressive array of specification upgrades. At the rear, there is an Öhlins S46 rear shock, offering a superior sense of grip and handling. At the front, 41mm inverted front forks, resplendent with gold-coloured outer
tubes, feature refined setting that help to create an ideal balance of front/rear poise and reaction. The Z900RS SE also features a Brembo calliper and rotor package at the front while cosmetically, the machine features the “RS” letters of the model logo on the side covers finished in red, black alumite radiator side covers and FI cover and gold coloured multi-spoke wheels.
The Z900RS SE gets more than just a cosmetic update in 2022
Another new model for 2022 is the Z900 SE. The popular Z900 has been a favourite for Supernaked fans across Europe, and this upgraded version helps enhance the machine even further with a host of refinements. The first change that riders will notice is the adoption of a Brembo brake package. Callipers are now M4.32 radial-mount monobloc items acting on ø300 mm Brembo rotors, offering stronger stopping power, more precise control and greater feel. In terms of suspension, the front forks feature a ø41mm inverted design with compression and rebound adjustability
alongside stepless preload adjustment. Complementing the other chassis changes, the visual appeal of the front suspension is now enhanced via the use of gold-coloured fork outer tubes. The rear of the machine is improved, too, with the addition of an Öhlins S46 shock absorber, helping to take response and performance to the next level. The Z900 SE also features a host of technical components, such as KTRC traction control, ‘sound tuned’ exhaust note, selectable power modes and an assist and slipper clutch. Riders will also be able to benefit from an Economical Riding Indicator and Bluetooth connectivity. The SE version is available in a single, distinctive colourway of Metallic Spark Black / Candy Lime Green.
Making headlines since its announcement, the stunning Z650RS augments the already hugely popular retro-sport line. Targeted at riders in the early stages of their riding career and those riders who recall iconic “son of Z1” Z650-B1 in 1977, the Z650RS perfectly blends old and new. Powered by the same parallel twin engine used in the Z650 and Ninja 650, the Z650RS has been tuned for a low and mid-rev response, alongside offering invigorating high-rev performance. It can also be adjusted to be compliant with A2 licencing regulations. The chassis features a tubular trellis construction, offering a light and agile response, while the narrow aspect allows riders to easily reach the ground. Focusing on suspension, the machine
to deliver a higher level of visibility, automatically adjusting to suit the available light. Thanks to an in-built Bluetooth chip, riders are able to connect their smartphone wirelessly through the Rideology app, giving them the ability to view the fuel gauge, odometer, maintenance schedule, riding logs, GPS routes and more. To increase comfort, the 2022 Versys 650 features a redesigned upper cowl, inspired by the bigger capacity Versys 1000, while the grill-like design of the front-middle section helps to direct wind away from the rider. A new windshield also offers four available height positions, with total adjustability of 80mm.
features ø41mm conventional forks with Kawasaki’s highly rated horizontal link rear suspension acting on a shock that is adjustable for preload. Braking comes from dual twin piston front callipers, and a single piston, assisted by Bosch advanced ABS. Of course, it’s the styling that makes the machine truly stand out. Evoking memories of the Z650-B1, the paintwork and pinstripes are a faithful reproduction, while the ‘duck tail’ cowling and side panels further pay homage to the 1977 legend. Further complementing the retro style is a round LED headlamp, analogue style ‘artillery shell’ shaped metres and gold multi-spoke wheels. Further refinements are available via Kawasaki Genuine Accessories. The Z650RS will be available in three distinct colours and styles, Metallic Spark Black, Candy Emerald Green and Metallic Moondust Grey/Ebony.

kawasaki racing team insight
The formidable Kawasaki Racing Team have had a lot of success over the past decade, starting with their first World Championship title courtesy of Tom Sykes back in 2013 and then a record breaking string of Six World Championships with Jonathan Rea. Meet a man who has been integral to the team’s success, Kawasaki Racing Advisor;
Paolo Marchetti

kawasaki racing team insight
P
aolo has been working within the Kawasaki family since 2003 where he started his career his green career with Team Bertocchi Kawasaki, the final year of racing 750cc machines! In 2004 he was involved in racing the first iteration of the Ninja ZX-10R and has had green blood running through his veins ever since; “I have been an electronics engineer since I first started in the paddock back in 1999, and worked with Jonathan Rea directly for his first two World Championships. In 2017 I started a new role as ‘Kawasaki Racing Advisor’ and it is through this job that I became involved with Kawasaki UK and Team Green”
Basically I am in charge of all the technical aspect and support for all racing activities in Superbike and Supersport outside of Kawasaki Racing Team who are managed by Provec Racing and Kawasaki Motors Corporation”. Over the past few seasons, the official Superbike team in the UK (currently FS-3 Racing) has benefitted from the support of Paolo and the technical knowledge he brings with him. It has meant that the teams in the UK now have a much better understanding of how the World Superbike machine works, not just engine wise but also, more importantly, electronically. We are not actually allowed to use much of the electronic aids that they use in WSBK, we don’t even have traction control, but we can take their philosophy and apply it to work within the British Superbike Championship rules.
Paolo's laptop has been a crucial tool in crunching and analysing vital data from various riders over the years
“My role allows me to spread the knowledge we have been developing in WSBK in the last 18 years of the ZX-10R” Paolo Marchetti
At a time when the other Manufacturers are pushing hard with their machines and racing in a Championship with such well balanced rules, it’s imperative that we take advantage of every opportunity to improve our own bike. We now have several months during which we will be working closely with Paolo and his team to come out swinging in 2022; “My role allows me to spread the knowledge we have been developing in WSBK in the last 18 years of the ZX-10R, this is of great help because teams do not need to starting testing in every direction. With the correct information and experience it is possible to reach a good level of performance in a shorter time, thus you can focus on listening to your rider and getting the best out of him”. Whilst this role demands a lot of time and holds a lot of responsibility,
16
Paolo always strives to take the time to enjoy it; “Seeing your bike come out of the last turn ahead of the rest of the pack, that’s what makes all the hard work worthwhile! Being able to work in an environment in which we get the chance to develop what is the pinnacle of motorcycle technologies is such a great feeling. That and the smell of race fuel in the morning, I can’t get enough of it!” After a much tougher season for Kawasaki Racing Team during 2021, all
"That and the smell of race fuel in the morning, I can’t get enough of it!" Paolo Marchetti
eyes are focussed on developing and improving the bike for next year, an area that Paolo is very much involved in; “Dorna taking away our ability to use the extra 500rpm was not ideal. To have such a imposition at one week away from the first round was a bit of a shock… but our job is still to perform at the maximum so we focussed all year on every other aspect of the bike exploring every possibility to brake a little later, carry a little more corner speed, have
a little more grip compare to all our competitors. This job now extends into the Winter. It has been a very tough job, and still is, and also we are asking our riders extra effort. We are lucky to have Jonny and Alex on board. We will now be working hard as a team across our winter testing programme to focus on these areas I mention. KRT ethos is never give up!” We asked Paolo is there anything he would change about the World
17

Superbike Championship; “Do you know, I think the guys at Dorna do an amazing job, especially over the past few seasons where the racing has been close and well balanced. In terms of the rules (other than our 500rpm!) I wouldn’t change anything, but I would love to go back to racing at Imola, and Brands Hatch!” The 2022 World and British Superbike seasons will be another battle for Kawasaki, but we are confident that with people like Paolo behind the scenes, and great riders on board we will be in the hunt for more silverware. We hope to see you trackside! n
Paolo's contribution to the team's success in WSBK is clear to see, the podium was a regular spot!
