TREND REPORT A/W 18/19
The search for harmony is universal, whether in the music we listen to, the relationships we cherish, or our ongoing attempts to express ourselves. Selfexpression is a key component of individuality, and the choices one makes regarding personal style—whether carefully curated or largely accidental—are a major contributing factor. When it comes to fashion, the attempts consumers make to overcome incongruity and maintain balance is made increasingly more challenging by the influx of trends and rapid rate of change. The truth is, it is difficult to stay on top of what the “next big thing” will be, even for fashion aficionados, much less the average shopper. For some, a fierce and innate desire to remain “in the know” propels them to stay on top of the latest trends. For others, the approach is more casual; a trip to a department store or a spin through the occasional fashion magazine. And while more is generally better, technology has resulted in an information overload, from easy access to trends from decades gone by, to the never-ending supply of references from social media and other online platforms. When it comes to color and the styles they inspire, Autumn/Winter 18/19 will bring about more juxtapositions and shades that push the boundary of expectations.

Bright shades are no longer the exclusive purview of spring or summer—the lines have officially been blurred. The use of statement colors has evolved to include clashing combinations and unexpected textures. A hot pink fur coat or bright red wool trousers are no longer taboo, and will continue to push the confines of what we can expect.

While the term “neutral palette has historically been associated with an unimaginative collection of white, black, grey and beige, this is no longer the case. Neutrals have experienced a renaissance, with the subtly of this color range made even more complex through the fabric manipulation and unique garment textures.

Ironically, today most people reminisce about the “good old days through the use of modern technology, whether through Google searches or on social media. Technology has evolved in the blink of an eye, and the pastels in this palette represent a similar trajectory. These are not the shades you grew up with on your Easter Day finery; on the contrary, they possess an unexpected sophistication.

While many people put a great deal of effort into their look and personal style, the pièce de rÊsistance is looking amazing while making it appear easy. The ability to pull off a showstopping look with a facade of nonchalance and carelessness is a gift. A gift made possible by stunning, rich jewel tones.
