IN AN ATTEMPT TO DESIGN AN APPROPRIATE ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH CENTER IN THE MIDST OF A FRAGILE ECOSYSTEM SUCH AS THE EVERGLADES, THIS PROJECT AIMS TO SIMULATE AN EXPERIENCE OBTAINABLE BY TRAVELING THROUGH SAWGRASS. AS A PLANT CONSTITUTING THE ESSENCE OF THE EVERGLADES, SAWGRASS DOES NOT ALLOW ONE EASY TRAVEL DUE TO ITS BLADES. BY ANALYZING THE PROPERTIES OF SAWGRASS, A STRUCTURAL DETAIL IS DEVELOPPED AS A CONCEPTUAL REPRESENTATION OF THE PLANT, WHO’S MAIN PURPOSE IS TO ENABLE A TRAVELER TO EXPERIENCE ITS UNEXPLORED SPATIAL POTENTIAL.

TOWN CENTER OF LAUDERDALE-BY-THE-SEA
THE PROJECT IS CHARACTERIZED BY ANALYZING THE PROPERTIES OF CONCRETE AND LIMESTONE, TWO OF THE PRIMARY CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS USED IN THE TOWN. THE COMMON FEATURE INHERENT WITHIN THE TWO MATERIALS IS THEIR PROPERTY OF POROSITY. DEFINED AS A MEASURE OF VOIDS/ EMPTY SPACE WITHIN A SOLID,THE NOTION OF POROSITY IN THE PROJECT IS EXPRESSED IN TERMS OF THE FLUIDITY OF SPACES EXPRESSED WITHIN THE PROGRAM( SOCIAL SPACES) AS WELL AS A RESPONSE TO CLIMATE ( SCREENS, SHADING DEVICES). THE CARVING OF VOLUMES PAIRED WITH THE USE OF SEVERAL ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENTS SUCH AS PERFORATED SCREENS EXHIBIT THE NOTION OF POROSITY OF SPACE, LIGHT AND AIR WITHINTHE TOWN CENTER.

OCEAN SKY COURTS
THE CONCERN OF EVER GROWING POPULATIONS MIGRATING TO CREATE COMPACT ORGANIZATIONS WITHIN CITIES, COUPLED WITH THE DESIRE FOR MUNICIPALITIES TO MAXIMIZE USE OF OCCUPIABLE SQUARE FOOTAGE WITHIN A PARCEL OF LAND SUGGESTS THE NEED FOR AN ARCHITECTURE THAT OFFERS A SENSE OF COMMUNITY THROUGH THE USE OF SHARED SPACES, SUCH AS COURTYARDS AND SKY COURTS. THE ADDED COMPONENT OF PROVIDING MIXED HOUSING TYPES FOR VARIOUS INCOME LEVELS IMPLIES A RESPONSE TO SOCIAL STRATIFICATION ISSUES.

SITE PLAN
THE PROJECT OFFERS A COMPOSITION OF MIXED HOUSING TYPOLOGIES THAT ENCOURAGES A HARMONIOUS LIFESTYLE FOR VARIOUS RESIDENTIAL POPULATIONS ON A SITE EQUIPPED WITH ENJOYABLE AMENITIES THAT APPEAL TO ITS INHABITANTS. ADDITIONALLY, WITH IMMINENT NATURAL THREATS, SUCH AS SEA LEVEL RISE, STORM SURGE AND HIGH SUN EXPOSURE THE PROJECT PRESENTS AN ARCHITECTURE CAPABLE OF FUTURE ADAPTATION BY ESTABLISHING POSSIBILITIES THAT ADDRESS CURRENT AND FUTURE CHALLENGES RELATED TO FLOODING AND CLIMATE.
