Chicago Grid: The “Invisible” and “Visible” Boundary Lines

Beyond Chicago Grid: The Transition of Space and Its Legacy

Theme Dating back to the Land Ordinance of 1785 and James Thompson’s subsequent first Plat of Chicago in 1830, The Chicago Grid is designed to give dependable service if operated according to instructions. The Chicago Grid is at once easy and difficult; generic and specific; neutral and hyperbolic; democratic and tyrannical; confining and liberating. It may discontinue or change specifications or design at any time without notice and without incurring any obligation.

Architecture as a collective experience

The transition from a dense residential area into the isolated, lifeless corridor, as well as the disconnection with the west town can be seen as two crucial opportunities to reshape the physical environment of the industrial corridor, mediating both visual and human connections in between. Design wise, to introduce a new hub for civilians to celebrate the legacy , the revitalized warehouse duo needs to match the scope of “architecture as a re-involvement in the urban space”. To achieve such qualities, programs need to be flexible, adaptable, and partially temporary, allowing people with multiple social classes to join the dialogue. In terms of recreation and commerce involvement, as a site located on the edge, the entrance can also be regarded as a square itself, but in a hybrid form that can reactivate commercial and recreational events by inviting people with all kinds of commuting ways. Thus, a drive-thru lane is placed on the corner, meanwhile leave the spine accessible for pedestrians to penetrate through the newly defined warehouse tunnels.

The Inner Facade Space Coordination Between Communities Project Type / Urban Renewal Academic / Thesis Design,5th Year Studio,(2015) Advisor / Tsung-Hung, Pai Location / Taichung City, Taiwan Dorian Gray, the leading character of the novel “The Picture of Dorian Gray” written by Oscar Wilde , was obsessed with the charm and beauty of his self-portrait. Dorian had viewed that beauty and sensual fulfillment are the only two things for him to persue in his llife. After understanding that beauty will fade as time passes by, Dorian was anxious about not being charming permanently. He thus expressed his desire of selling his soul for eternal beauty, ensuring that the portrait, rather than he, will fade and age. Take an overview of the urban development situation in Taiwan, when a city expands in changes of time and space, it is expected to detect both magnificence and repulsion emerging. The process creates an everlasting gap between programmatic and transitory areas. The constant desire for modernlization generates extra storage for modern society, while it is inevitable that regional idendities are being elimanated gradually. The project poses as a space curator, which is responsible for sorting out the hidden values of the selected site, Chung Xin Market. The curating process was aimed at providing multiple routes for both market goers and residents to view the market from different angles. Meanwhile, people are able to take advantage of the resources they mutually share within the block.

Background Issue: The Aging Of Central District

On Site: Chung Xin Market

Expansion And Aging Of Old Town Based on the site selections of early infrastrucutre and government entities, central district of Taichung was highly developed in the past few decades. But the original scale of it could not provide better life qualities, the government then distributed other urban functions to the nearby west district in the early 90s.

Compared to the programatic open space within apartment building, which is built based on the regulations of “bulk reward for urban renewal”, it is usually not accessible for citizens. The 65x70 square meter block, however, is relatively friendly. The project serves as a model that raises both citizens’ and the real estate owners’ awareness for the definition of open space, giving them further imagination about “life field”.

Located due south of the National Museum of Fine Arts, the low-key strategy, however, aimed at adjusting the subtle relationship between urban society and the semi-public community.

To create the “void, reversing unused space in-side-out can integrate spaces with different properties into a connected link. The cluster thus can serve as a silent living room hidden in the urban space.

The released upper level space enables people to sense the surroundings by different angles.

City Catalyzer Urban Activities Complex Project Type / University Library Academic / 3rd Year Studio,(2013) Advisor / Rung-Jing, Jou Location / Taipei City, Taiwan Due to the rapid revolution of technology, books are now being computerized in various forms on electronic devices. Interactively, libraries nowadays are no longer simply places for the storage of knowledge ,and merely for people to read silently. I assume that, libraries in the future will effectively engage more with civic life, supporting and supplementing other urban functions. The project was aimed to extend opening hours for readers and deďŹ ne activities into regular and featured events. People thus have multiple reasons to visit the library than the past. During the extended hours, library goers have various choices to sense the atmosphere at night time. Sounds are allowed in the live house, and students are as well allowed to discuss school works in the oating box without conventional restrictions. City catalyzer is a concept which triggers people to obtain knowledge in an informal way. By adding other programs into the space, the value of library can thus be expanded. The catalyzer allows people from different areas of professions to interact and share, transforming library into a creative space for learning.

Unlike the existing NTUT library, which mainly serves as an institution for document storage and information finding, the new branch NTUT library design plan focused on creating a space for students to extend their interests toward reading, brainstorming, cooperating and sharing. The project site is surrounded by highly civilized life. Thus, I intended to adjust the operation cycle and diversify the activities in the new library, creating an urban “complex” which encourages more people to visit library for knowledge and life taste.

By highlighting the featured events inside the separated buildings, scattered boxes can serve as wayfinding system, navigating visitors to their destinations during extended hours.

Latest published books are stored on the vertical bookwalls from gorund level to second floor. The attached-wooden ladders can also serve as lecture theatre for book events.

The extruded glass box enables people to have a wide open view toward the northwest scene. Plaza beneath the hovering volume can serve as meeting point and recreation area.

By redefining the interior floor height, the cohesive space not only allows readers to gather freely, but also gives students of NTUT another platform to present their school porojects in front of the crowds.

Dialogue Of Space Plant A House On Hillside Project Type / Surfer’s House Design Academic / 2nd Year Studio,(2012) Advisor / Wen-Yi, Chang Location / Toucheng Township, Yilan County, Taiwan The aim of the project is to minmize the contradictive gap between artificial beauty and natural environment, enabling the house to get adjusted into wilderness harmoniously. According to the hypothesized house owners, a couple of amaeture surfers who imigrated to Yilan County. I suppose that a regular surfer does not necessarily need a highly decorated house, but a series of multi-functional spaces instead. Space properties are defined by events and users, allowing the house owners to have not only private spaces for living, but also various spaces for social behaviors. The concept and strategy are both inspired by surfer’s van, which is viewed as an essential mobile articraft for surfers’ life. A surf van could collect every little need altogether in a limited interior space when surfers are on a road trip. By rotating, extending, pushing and pulling, the two-stories high house has a association with a van functionally, lying calmly on the hillside.

Shift/

Horizontal shift makes the whole object redefine the connection between interior space and the natural environment, adjusting the size of shared-void to a moderate scale.

Yilan County, the historical Taiwan rural district, has long been praised for its’ abundant resources, such as moutains, coastline, hot springs and fishery. With the population expansion in urban area, in order to relax for a while and escape from the hustle and bustle, more and more people from Taipei are getting familiar with the 50-min long journey to spend their holidays, or even stay in Yilan for a longer period. Downtown Toucheng

To create void between two massive volumes, the separation enables each side to have further connection to the exterior space.

450,000 (year 2016)

The original strategy was to separate two main objects, and divide each volume into private, semi-private, and public space. To serve the house owners’ needs and privacy, I intended to create series of “filters”, which function as transition layers when guests are engaged in the space. Rooftop is also accessible, giving people better chance of embracing nature at another height.

Twist/

Once the rear of one single upper-level volume is twisted and extended, another void surface appears. The move also reorganizes the whole object, making the space to be divided into different programs for users.

The Loop Give-And-Share Pavilion Project Type / Pavilion Design Academic / Competition(Individual),2013 Advisor / Chuan-Chih, Chang Location / Taipei City, Taiwan Hipster culture has subtley influenced a wide aspects of our society: the style of clothing, the way we communicate, the growing trends of art events and so on. Huashan 1914 Creative Park, as a site that serves as a cutural recreation zone, people of different ages are able to share the open space from daytime to nighttime freely. The project site is located next to the main entrance of the creative park. Originally was a wide green space, the topic for the project is to create a temporary pavilion, which allows more people to experience exhibited interactive objects. Unlike the blockbuster shows in the creative park, I primarily focused on turning the word “share”, virtually and materially, into practical resources, which are accessible for people who are in need. Programs including recycled food diner, smart kitchen, and vertical shelves filled by donators’ and individuals’ used books are provided. Inevitably, the two-storey high, light structure pavilion is deemed to be removed after the exhibition period. Besides cutting the use of concrete, the first move is to manage a route followed along with series of new trees. The newly planted trees will be part of the recovery plan of the original green space. The remaining trees can thus be viewed as the trace of the pavilion on the grassy city square.

Huashan 1914 creative park

Previously thrived as a wine factory, Huashan creative park is now upgraded into a cuturally diversified destination shared by all. It has become a hot zone for people to “check-in” in person and on social network as well. My design approach is based on the phenomenon of frequent and excessive posts about trending events in the virtual world. The loop pavilion, which is projected on the front square, providing people another way to contribute substances, share thoughts, and more importantly, making viewers rethink the merit of “sharing” in modern society.

The topic for our team project was “high-tech” architecture information booth, which was performed by pieces of triangle matte plastic molds attached onto the twisted-tube skeleton structure. We were attempting to create a freeform arch that is able to slow the pace of the passer-by, providing an informational access point for the building.

The project was aimed to trigger people to rethink the definition of sharing in the era of relentless self-promotion.
