CONCEPT STATEMENT
This Margaret Hunt Hill bridge inspired concept demonstrates the future of social retail by creating individual environments that provide well-designed work areas which can be easily transformed into spaces that satisfy retail needs. A unique custom element found throughout the space is a cable detail that was inspired by the bridge and demonstrates the main concept for this space. This cable detail serves as a way to break up the space, creating a sense of privacy while also permitting clear sightlines and unity; it brings a visually creative and architectural element to the space and overall represents the undeniable support system that these companies are creating by coming together in a co-working environment.
one at each available user entrance. These desks can be separated into four separate cash wraps to serve as check points during retail hours. In an effort to protect the privacy and equipment of day-time employees, lockers have been provided in a section closed off to the public during retail hours. Each of these lockers houses a drawer for personal items and work equipment. Once removed, these drawers can be stored in an open file cabinet located at each co working desk space. At the end of the work day, drawers are stored and the file cabinets transform into display cases for retail products.
The hall is an engaging and active space that encourages fitness by offering an area referred to as “the bridge where employees can take a walk or a break when needed or desired. Another element that has been implemented into the space are bicycle racks, which not only encourages fitness but offers a sustainable alternative to driving.
To improve the well-being of employees, this office and retail space was designed to take advantage of natural light. Access to natural views through picture images on magnetic Riveli shelving, or organically through windows, will help focus the mind and improve mental and emotional health. This design also provides private and break areas where users can recharge mentally. Height adjustable desks were specified to ensure ergonomic comfort and provide a flexible work environment for employees.
An open office setting has been created to allow for collaboration and engagement during the work day; group seating that can be easily rearranged and moved has been incorporated to encourage these types of interactions. With the amount of people coming in and out of the space, noise control was essential; this was addressed through the use of custom acoustic clouds and tile carpeting.
In an effort to generate a greater connection to nature, custom wall plants were used throughout. Sustainable design was incorporated through daylighting, occupancy vacancy sensors, daylighting sensors and automatic shades to conserve energy. Recycling containers, all furniture, materials and finishes were selected from distributers with high sustainable ratings. In the final design ADA/IBC codes were applied.
With a high level of traffic and a myriad of users there is a need to address security. There are two reception desks,
Altogether, this space meets multidimensional needs, addresses user and employee health, safety and welfare.

We are group number three and we are Threefold. Threefold means three times as grea t. In tr ying to find a way to incor pora te this concept into the Nyafumba Village Librar y we thought of the three or ganiza tions tha t made this possible, the three depar tments par ticipa ting in our Charrette, and the three ideas tha t emb ody na tionality on the Uganda flag. The three color s on the Uganda flag represent community, wellbeing, and together ness. The space was designed to be ver sa tile making it an area w here people can come together for multiple uses, such as a librar y, classroom, and third space environment. All of the areas aim to address individual needs and encourage engaged lear ning. Comfor t issues were addressed by incor pora ting ventila tion concepts, opera ble windows, and passive solar.

Lolita Confectionary
Located in Ljubljana, Slovenia, this cozy confectionery was designed to echo the ambience of a traditional cafe; The classic black and white Thonet cafe chairs are the greatest indicator of this. Otherwise, the combination of new and existing parquet flooring and two extraordinary ceiling murals make this space especially unique. In addition to this, expansive, historic windows provide constant natural daylight and a connection with the local nightlife. In the end, these features makeup what turns out to be a one of a kind shop called Lolita.
CONCEPT STATEMENT Having resided in San Diego, California, an environment they’ve regarded as both tumultuous and manic, the Johnson family (consisting of Josh, Anna, and their two children, Jason and Josie), are eager to acquire a change of pace. Having already purchased a home in Park City, Utah, the family has retained an interior designer to provide the following expert services: • Design an interior environment that is stylish and accommodates the practical needs of a growing family • Procure an art collection as well as new furnishing and fixtures • Be mindful of sustainable practices and applications • Generate an atmosphere that wholly represents family warmth and vitality City life often implicates a stress induced excitement; the kind of excitement that can only be remedied in a restful retreat, some place apart from the hustle and bustle of every day city life. Fortunately, for the Johnson family, Park City is just the place. Not lacking in excitement, but rather, inciting a sort of subdued excitement (the sort that one might experience in a calm approach to incredible heights while floating in a hot air balloon), Park City is an ide al place to unwind either temporarily or eternally. Inspired by the Autumn Aloft Hot Air Balloon Festival in Park City, this home was designed to incorporate the delicate curves, contrasting colors and geometric patterns of a hot air balloon; in essence, an art d eco styled home. A unique style has been incorporated here; a custom stair railing, striking 3D geometric and custom fireplace, pops of color aligned with classic neutrals and geometric wallpaper that starts from the wall and extends across the ceiling, have all been specified. In an effort to accommodate the family as they continue to grow, a custom and hybrid storage, shelving and desk unit has been designed for the home. This unique piece has been designed to hide clutter and storage while leaving plenty of space for display of personal items for Josh and Anna and their children. The garage entrance and laundry room has been transformed into a sensible mudroom, a space to house extra storage and serve as a buff er zone between the effects of extreme weather conditions outdoors, and a warm interior. Art by Allison Kahn has been specified for the Johns on family. These art deco inspired artworks aid in the overall deco experience while simultaneously serving as focal points in various areas of the home. Last, but not least, green efforts have been made throughout the residence through the use durable laminate flooring, LED and ECO Halogen lighting, concrete fireplace surround, water conserving fixtures, low VOC paint and plenty of locally sourced furnishing and fixtures. Now that the wants and needs of the Johnson family have been carefully examined and applied here, the fam ily, with personal items in tow, need only board their hot air balloon and float away to their new subdued, yet exciting life in Park City.

Concept Statement
After a rock climbing accident, Jeff Cobble has maintained full range of motion, but has limited mobility and is considered a para plegic. Recently, Jeff has become less reliant on in home care and intends to fur ther his independence by integra ting ADA compliant s tandards to his ex is ting residence in Moa b, Utah. Jeff is an outdoor sman, and continues to take advantage of the grea t landsca pes afforded to him in Moa b, including cycling, camping and rock crawling. On a recent tr ip to Moa b, I took a picture of a tree dur ing a hike through Arches Na tional Par k. This tree, like Jeff, emana t es tremendous s trength. Bent and contor ted, it endures the high and low clima te extremes of a deser t, and despite its circums tances, thr ives. In an effor t to reflect the for titude and s trength of this tree, ma ter ials with similar textural and visual qualities have been selected. The wood tones and imaging of the slip resis tant, porcelain tile floor ing as well as the frayed pa tter ned of the wa ter proof wallpa per are direct reflections of the cur vilinear a ppearance of this tree. Blue accent wall paint and w hite fixtures were selected as a reflection of the clear blue skies tha t typically surround the Moa b landsca pe. Las tly, mixed metals were selected to emula te ma ter ials found and inspired by na ture. While it is necessar y to incor pora te ADA s tandards, it is impor tant to Jeff tha t this space not call a ttention to his disa bility. The s tar k w hite, pa tter ned wallpa per is not only a s ta tement piece in this ADA ba throom, but a dis traction to the non-typical accommoda tions made for him. In contras t, the br ushed gold gra b bar s, w hile ser ving an a pparent function, display as decora tive accessor ies as well. Changes made to the floor plan include knocking down the gues t bedroom closet to make room for a roll-in shower, two new lava tor ies with plumbing wra ps for safety, gra b bar s in the toileting and shower areas, easy to reach controls and s torage, clear floor space in front of each fixture and a 60 tur n space w here needed, programma ble faucets to prevent scalding and pr iva te s torage for per sonal use. This ADA ba throom not only accommoda tes Jeff in his current transitional needs, but long-las ting and classic ma ter ial finishes and fixtures, as well as functional space planning, will continue to ser ve Jeff for year s to come.

Concept Statement KNOWN FOR ITS UNUSUALLY DILIGENT ROOT SYSTEM, UTAH’S QUAKING ASPEN SUPPORTS AN AGGREGATE OF TREES, THE LARGEST OF WHICH IS LOCATED IN UTAH’S FISHLAKE NATIONAL FOREST AND SPANS OVER 100 ACRES. EACH AGGREGATE CONSISTS OF AN ABUNDANCE OF TREES AND CONTAINS DUPLICATE CHARACTERISTICS INCLUDING LEAF SHAPE AND SIZE, BARK CHARACTER AND FALL LEAF COLOR. SIMILARLY, THE ROOT SENIOR LIVING COMMUNITY ACCOMMODATES SEVERAL INDIVIDUALS OF SIMILAR AND VARYING ABILITIES; IT’S A PLACE WERE RESIDENTS CAN COMFORTABLY AND CONFIDENTLY PUT DOWN ROOTS FOR THE LONG HAUL. IT’S HOMELIKE ENVIRONMENT, COMMITMENT TO THE HEALTH, SAFETY AND WELFARE OF ITS RESIDENTS AND STRIDES IN INCREASED MOBILITY, SOCIALIZATION AND DIGNITY, HAVE ELEVATED THE SENIOR LIVING LIFESTYLE AND EXPERIENCE. THE SUCCESS OF THE ROOT SENIOR LIVING COMMUNITY RELIES HEAVILY ON THE INCORPORATION OF EVIDENCE BASED DESIGN, UNIVERSAL DESIGN AND ADA CONSIDERATIONS. A CONTRASTING NEUTRAL AND COOL COLOR PALETTE HAS BEEN INCORPORATED TO ACCOMMODATE COLOR PERCEPTION DETERIORATION AMONG SENIORS; FINISHES HAVE BEEN CAREFULLY SELECTED WITH SAFETY AND CHANGES IN DEPTH PERCEPTION IN MIND. THE NEW FLOOR PLAN SUPPORTS A CONTINUOUS AND SAFE WALKING PATH WITH HANDRAILS AND SUBTLE WAYFINDING CUES; DAYLIGHTING AND ARTIFICIAL LIGHT SOURCES HAVE BEEN MANIPULATED TO SATISFY SENIOR RESIDENT NEEDS. LASTLY, A SAFE, OUTDOOR ROOF TERRACE HAS BEEN ADDED TO SUPPORT THE GENERAL WELL-BEING OF SENIORS. EACH RESIDENT FLOOR WAS DESIGNED TO ACCOMMODATE A DIFFERENT LEVEL OF ABILITY. IN SUPPORT OF THE BRIDGE CONCEPT, WHICH ALLOWS SENIOR COUPLES OF OPPOSING ABILITIES TO CONTINUE TO LIVE TOGETHER, AN AREA HAS BEEN DESIGNED TO SUPPORT MIXED INDEPENDENT, ASSISTED AND COGNITIVE ABILITIES. THE ROOT SENIOR LIVING COMMUNITY STRIVES TO BE INCLUSIVE AND PROVIDE A ONE OF A KIND LIVING EXPERIENCE FOR ITS RESIDENTS. THE INTERIOR DESIGN OF THE SPACE IS IMPERATIVE TO THE SUCCESS OF ITS RESIDENTS.

INTRODUCTION TO THE PROJECT THE FUTURE OF RETIREMENT COMMUNITIES DO NOT RESIDE IN THE OUTSKIRTS OF SUBURBIA, BUT IN THE CONVENIENT, DIVERSE AND AUTONOMOUS LIFESTYLE OF URBAN DWELLING. ACCESS TO AMENITIES, PUBLIC TRANSIT AND CULTURAL DESTINATIONS ARE ALL KEY IN SUSTAINING THE MOBILITY, SOCIALIZATION AND DIGNITY OF THE AGING ELDERLY POPULATION. THE MEDIAN AGE OF RESIDENTS IN THE METRO SALT LAKE CITY AREA IS 31.4; THE INTRODUCTION OF A SENIOR LIVING COMMUNITY WILL BOOST DIVERSE INTERACTIONS, INCREASE SOCIALIZATION AMONG ELDERLY RESIDENTS AND ENCOURAGE A HEALTHY AND ACTIVE LIFESTYLE. SOCIALIZATION WITHIN THE COMMUNITY IS ENCOURAGED THROUGH A MIX OF RESIDENT COMMUNITY MEMBERS, INCLUDING A RANGE OF PHYSICAL ABILITY, AGE, INDEPENDENCE AND COGNITION. EQUIPPED WITH THE PROPER RESOURCES TO ACCOMMODATE THE UNIQUE NEEDS OF ALL ITS RESIDENTS, ROOT SENIOR LIVING COMMUNITIES OFFER A SEAMLESS TRANSITION FOR SENIOR CITIZENS, FAMILY AND FRIENDS FROM AN UNACCOMPANIED LIVING SITUATION TO A SENIOR LIVING COMMUNITY. BUILT IN 1980, THE PROPOSED SITE IS LOCATED IN SALT LAKE CITY AND WITHIN WALKING DISTANCE OF LOCAL SHOPS, RESTAURANTS AND CULTURAL DESTINATIONS. THE EXISTING STRUCTURE, COMPOSED OF BRICK MASONRY AND CONSISTING OF FOUR FLOORS, A BASEMENT, ROOF TERRACE AND TWO-TIERED PARKING STRUCTURE, IS SPATIALLY EQUIPPED TO ACCOMMODATE A WIDE RANGE AND NUMBER OF RESIDENTS, WITH POTENTIAL FOR GROWTH.
EXISTING SENIOR LIVING FACILITIES ARE PREDOMINANTLY LOCATED IN RURAL SUBURBAN AREAS. RESEARCH, HOWEVER, INDICATES THAT URBAN LOCATIONS AFFORD GREATER ACCESS TO AMENITIES, ACTIVITIES, SOCIALIZATION, PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION AND HEALTHCARE. THE BRIDGE CONCEPT, BASED ON THE ENDEARING NOTION THAT COUPLES SHOULD LIVE TOGETHER (REGARDLESS OF OPPOSING PHYSICAL OR COGNITIVE ABILITY), CALLED FOR A MIXED ABILITY LIVE-IN COMMUNITY THAT GENERATES SOCIALIZATION AMONG PEERS.
