The workshop proposes the exploration of ‘DIGITAL TECTONICS’ whereby the emphasis is on total integration between digital modeling and fabrication at a 1:1 scale. Parametric design is utilized in both methodology and modeling, where students explore both associative and generative techniques that investigate variation in form and stress physical production design integration.

ARCHEOGRAPHY IV is the fourth and final installation of the ARCHEOGRAPHY PROJECT series at SUPERFRONT, which has presented the combined work of architects and choreographers since October 2008. The investigation presumes that precepts of movement may act authoritatively upon architecture and, conversely, that architecture may operate within a logic of performance.

GROUND CIRCULATION Pedestrian paths between buildings allow for maximum permeability of the site and easy access to the ground floor amenities.
UNDERGROUND CIRCULATION The “Via Civitas” connects the three sites. The accesses to the main concourse are controlled for better security control. A “service spine” allows employees to easely move between buildings.

SALA CIVITAS
THE VIA CIVITAS : This pedestrian path is the spine of the public visitor’s experience to Campidoglio Due. It links all the different parcels and its program components together. From the two main points of arrival(O) it guides and weaves the visitor through the site. Interwoven on its path are secondary entry points and three “Sale Civitas” (one on each parcel). The “Sale Civitas” is the focal node were the citizen interacts with the Government Service.

SUSTAINABILITY:
A variety of strategies is used to control and enhance the indoor and outdoor environment through cost effective passive and active methods. The office buildings are shaped an oriented to allow daylight to reach onto the majority of the Piazza’s, while the fact that the buildings are raised provides the ability for wind the flow through the spaces and dissipating potential heat built-up in the Piazza’s. Green roofs will help to reduce a heat island effect in the city as well as capture rain water. The south faces of the office buildings are clad with perforated metal louvers allowing the interior office spaces to have a tempered indoor climate. In addition a chilled beam cooling system will create an ideal office environment.

OFFICE SPACE FLEXIBILITY: The office volumes are rationalized around 18 meter wide volume in which the central core and structural system are tailored to accommodate current and future office flexibility. The linear floorplate is organized in three 6-meter zones that run along the full length of the building. The central zone is structurally and programmatically the spine of the office floor allowing the 2 flanking zones to be flexibile office space.

STRUCTURE: The office superstructure will be characterized by a steel structural system with a concrete core extending to the highest level in the building. A central steel mega-truss will represent the ‘spine’ of the building and the main supporting system for the two 27m cantilevers at the opposite ends of the concrete core. The typical floors will consist of a 75mm metal deck with a 85mm light weight topping slab spanning up to 4.5 meters between steel floor beams. The typical framing will consist of a moment frame systems in the direction orthogonal to the building spine and a steel frame braced by the core in the direction longitudinal to the spine.

This research project tests the possibilities that Grasshopper (visual scripting software for Rhinoceros) offers to designers in the early development stages of a project. The definition visualizes the sun incidence angle on the surface and gives a color feedback at each subdivision point. The use of this sun data visualization definition allows designers to have an immediate visual feedback without having to use most advanced software, like Ecotect, that can be use at a later stage.

The CART OFFICE conjures imagery of the trade taking place within the office; digitally integrating the user with multiple environments. The cart is the platform across which the sale is made with a pullout stock of chairs symbolizing the vendor and consumer. Much like the shard of glass’s formal intention to reduce its own impact on the skyline, the sleek nature of the movable desk allows the floor plate to be reconfigured at a moments notice and small battery power units provide the user with a detachment from the physical plan. At the same time as the desk becomes detached from the floor the free plan is completed by the disengagement of the body from the local surroundings of the office. The ephemeral office is created through projections on partition screens providing the possibility of digital integration with multiple geographical locations simultaneously.

The POD OFFICE presents a system for social integration. Multiple unit types eliminate the traditional fixed vertical elements of architecture by physically containing them within and producing them virtually through their configurations. The live work condition of a mixed-use building is localized across the floor rather than vertically zoned through the building. The re-programmable floor plate is central to this theme where space is compressed by the fragmentation and reorganization of program and the possibility of continual re-configuration over time. Office work is integrated within the social fabric as well as physical environment surrounding our lives.

The famous biologist Lynn Margulis, contends that symbiosis is a major driving force behind evolution; contending that it is strongly based on co-operation, interaction, and mutual dependence whether among organisms or natural processes. Man is the first species that has the capability of altering or maintaining the balance of these. The question then posed is, how can the way we live, predominantly in large urban conglomerations, become sustainable before the ‘balance of things’ is irreparably damaged?

By integrating and becoming part of ABSOLUTE, the proposed 60 story tower and base seek to complement and expand the existing development by following an established sectional organization and creating a unique presence so that ABSOLUTE NEXT becomes an icon for the entire development. With a total building area of 45,000 square meters, containing 480 units, the size of the tower alone will make it a landmark in the area. Featuring a combination of townhouses, garden suites, and quality amenity space, the building is characterized by translucent materials and a fully landscaped podium that hides parking and services required for the diverse program. The design includes a podium base that provides a continuous street wall of grade-related residential and commercial units and active uses on top. Landscaping, pathways, and activities enhance interest along the street and connect the project to the surrounding neighborhood by mediating scales between the tower and street.

GREEN : public / semi-private / collective The new building offers inviting green spaces at public street level facades, including a vertical spine that ascends upwards through semi-private gardens on each floor of the building. This series of outdoor spaces culminates in a collective green level on the rooftop. Green spaces and elements are used to assemble residents and visitors into common spaces for interaction and communication.
Due to the shallowness of the site, the floor plans of each of the units were conceived of as linear, and fade from the most private areas (bedroom / studio) to the more public ones (kitchen / living room), ending in shared common terrace-gardens.

.front view The openness and articulation of the new building’s façade establishes a strong visual relationship with the planned tree lined Octavia Boulevard, and the Hayes Green, by mirroring the network of new spaces created by new tree plantings onto the façade of the building, and recalls the type and use of spaces contained in the facade, thereby blurring the boundaries between the boulevard and the building itself.

A complex strip running in the 3-dimensional space of the container outlines the functions of a traditional house. The user is invited to walk and experience the red carpet that sometimes reflects itself in an infinite surreal landscape. The red line leads to the festival of suggestions and imagination. A simple metal structure, hidden by the lineoleum checker walls, holds the opaque meth-acrylate red strip. Four mirrors (2 in the center & 2 at the end) create the horizontal landscapes. Lighting is provided by spotlights hidden in the ceiling.

V. Mitch McEwen earned an M. Arch from Columbia’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation in 2006, and scored a job at the Manhattan office of Bernard Tschumi Architects. As an architectural planner for the firm, she has worked on master plans in Singapore and Abu Dhabi, as well as a museum in Maryland. Her day job keeps her plenty busy. But several years ago, the 31-year old started conjuring up visions of her own project: a “laboratory to experiment” with the intersection of architecture and other art forms. So in the spring of 2007, she rented a 950-square-foot storefront in Brooklyn’s Bed-Stuy neighborhood—a location chosen for its dear place in McEwen’s heart (“I love Brooklyn,” she professes), and for its relatively affordable $1,700V. Mitch McEwen per-month rent, which was reduced to $1,400 after McEwen and an intern renovated the space. After months of work, the shell was transformed into the SUPERFRONT gallery. It opened in January 2008 and has continued to gain traction—and grow. A second gallery, SUPERFRONT LA, will open on September 18 in West Hollywood. McEwen thinks the time is right to be giving serious thought to the melding of architecture and other creative mediums. She’s observed that lately—and increasingly —visual “artists have become obsessed with program and space. It seemed like a weird reversal, and I wanted to play with that.” A recent show in the Whitney’s satellite gallery, the Park Avenue Armory, confirms her analysis—a massive biomorphic installation by Ernesto Neto bridged the gap between architecture and art, and received rave reviews. Rethinking Hines Tower Site Beckmann proposes a conceptual alternative to business- asusual, choosing the site of the proposed 53W53rd, among the city's largest skyscraper proposals in one of the most overbuilt parts of Midtown. Hines, the developer, engaged Paris architect Jean Nouvel, who designed an 82- story hotel and residential tower higher than the Chrysler Building. The site was purchased from the Museum of Modern Art with the proviso that the project would house additional gallery space for the museum. As architect and Axis Mundi founder John Beckmann explains, "Instead of disguising the rich potential of towers that have a mix of uses, we looked for a way to express that diversity." The title of his scheme: Vertical Neighborhood. With enough facade articulations that would make the stacking-boxes camp jump for joy, the building is intended to be porous and full of irregular vertical fissures to bring in light, breezes, and encourage neighborly socialization. It also champions flexibility and an "emerging reality for tall buildings as collections of domestic elements: dwellings, neighborhoods, streets." The flexibility is also manifested in the "SmartBlock" ring units that allow for mixed use and many floor plan varieties. Structurally, I am not sure exactly how the malleabilty of these units would work out -- apparently, they can "shift in and out, adding rich texture to the surface" -- does that mean they are reconfigurable for each new resident, as in, a constantly transforming facade?
