Ways of working consultancy project Catriona – Group Internal Auditor “I got involved in some consulting audit work on the Group wide ‘ways of working’ programme. This enabled me to help the project team shape the right level of controls in the operational areas around handling tender & stock in store operations. This work was stretching as we had to ensure the process was fit for purpose to be applied across our international businesses as well as the UK and made commercial sense.”
Business review Tesco Direct Nigel – Group Internal Auditor “Recently I had the opportunity to conduct a business review of the newly formed Tesco Direct catalogue business. This audit was a great learning experience as the audit team had not previously done any work in this area. I was dealing with some people who were new to Tesco so I spent a lot of time gaining their commitment to ensure their risk appetite was aligned with Group thinking. However, I had to be mindful of the fact that Tesco Direct is a different business model and the customer needs are different to those found in our store operation.”
Thailand property acquisition & construction audit Mark – Group Internal Auditor “Although based in the UK I had the opportunity to review the property acquisition & construction process in our business in Thailand. Whilst the Group has guidelines on how this process is best controlled the challenge here was to influence local management to ensure the controls in place were in line with best practice, right for the Thai business and the local culture.”
Group Service Centre audit Katrine – Group Internal Auditor “Earlier this year I reviewed our supplier payment process, some elements of which are based at our Group Service Centre in India. I started my review by considering how suppliers are managed, goods are ordered, received, invoices validated & paid, for all areas of the UK business. This gave me great oversight of many different functions and visiting India was a great experience as I had to adapt my leadership style for a very different working environment.”
Catherine – previously Group Internal Auditor “After two years at Tesco, I have recently been promoted to a project management role within Finance. My experiences in Internal Audit assisted this move, giving me an insight into Tesco systems and processes together with exposure to senior people. The role provided me with the opportunity to develop a broad range of knowledge including store operations, online retailing, Telecoms and Financial Services working both in the UK and internationally.” Tanya – Group Audit Manager “I qualified as an ACA with PwC in Dublin and left as a manager in 2003. I joined Tesco Ireland as an internal auditor. I believe that the two years in this role gave me the best possible introduction to the Tesco business and a comprehensive understanding of how one of the biggest retailers in the world operates. This in turn prepared me for my promotion to European Audit Manager in October 2005.”
