What is your goal?

When I look back at my last year here, there are many points about CME that I like. The most important one is making friends who come from different continents. Also the teachers are quite important to me, they are professionally developed and well experienced, and they work hand in hand not only to improve the student’s ability for major tasks, but also to prepare students for their academic future at university. If I had started university directly, I am sure that my life would have been more stressful. But because I went to CME, I was aware of the system of Macquarie University. Moreover, CME did more than just teach me English, it introduced me to the Australian lifestyle and helped me to cope with living so far away from home.

University Entry Preparation Program for Translating and Interpreting (TIPP) TIPP is a 10-week university entry English preparation program for international students entering Macquarie University’s Translating and Interpreting or Education programs which require an overall IELTS 7.0 or equivalent for entry. Students graduating from this program will be able to enter directly into their Translating and Interpreting or Education degrees at Macquarie University without taking the IELTS test.

Having completed the Translation and Interpreting Preparation Program (TIPP) at CME, I realise how useful the skills I developed in the TIPP program are in my current studies in the Master of Translation and Interpreting Degree at Macquarie University. In particular, the note-taking activities, making presentations and pronunciation practice I did in the TIPP class are very helpful in my Masters program. At CME my teachers’ detailed feedback on my writing has also helped me to be much more accurate in my written assignments. CME & SIBT SIBT, located at Macquarie University, provides the leading university pathway program in Australia, offering Certificate IV programs as well as a range of Higher Education Certificates and Diplomas that are the equivalent to first year at Macquarie University. Upon successful completion of a SIBT Diploma students will gain direct entry into the second year of a Macquarie University Bachelor degree. This may include a tour of Sydney’s iconic sights, a party night or team challenge. TESOL Programs CME offers two TESOL programs tailored to the needs and interests of language teachers. Both programs are delivered by highly qualified and experienced TESOL professionals and are ideal for both current English teachers and trainee English teachers. The methodology targets teaching to adults and young adults; however, primary and secondary school teachers can consider how to apply these methodologies to younger learners. Both TESOL programs are open to individual and group enrolments.

Program 1: TESOL Methodology in Context TESOL in Practice and Intermediate English Program (with TESOL Methodology lectures and class observations) This program is for teachers with an intermediate level of English (IELTS 4.5 - 6.5 Academic module or equivalent) wanting to:

–– two opportunities to practise teaching to your peers (other teachers) • Intermediate English language study: 9 hours per week to improve your understanding of the English language and your English listening, speaking, reading and writing skills • Classroom observations: 2 hours per week to observe CME teachers, live or videoed, in the classroom. Visits to primary and high schools in Sydney may also be included in the July program if requested.

in TESOL (with TESOL in Practice and Advanced English program) This program is for teachers with an upper-intermediate to advanced level of English (IELTS 7 Academic module or equivalent) wanting a stronger focus on TESOL theory and formal classroom teaching practice. This program is run by CME along with the prestigious Department of Linguistics at Macquarie University and comprises one unit of their Post Graduate Certificate in TESOL. In addition, teachers will receive the added benefit of developing their English language and practical TESOL skills from CME’s experienced teaching professionals.

Independent Learning Centre (ILC) CME students have access to their own well equipped interactive English language library, one of the best of its kind in Australia. The ILC provides students with a wide range of language learning materials including books, magazines, newspapers, software, audio and video cassettes, CD’s, DVD’s and a growing range of linked web-based language sites. There are free English conversation classes available, providing students with the opportunity to practise their spoken English in a supportive, informal setting, enhancing their speaking skills and increasing their confidence in conversational English.

Students are responsible for booking their own accommodation. It is essential that accommodation is organised before you leave home. There are different accommodation options available at CME to suit your needs. University housing The university has self catering apartments and residential colleges. Homestay Some students prefer to choose Homestay accommodation. This involves living with an Australian family. It includes accommodation in your own bedroom with a private or shared bathroom, and use of the lounge and dining areas of the house. Breakfast and dinner are provided every day and are eaten with the family. The accommodation is within a reasonable distance from CME – up to 20 minutes by public transport. Homestay offers students a safe and supportive environment and is often a good first step into a new country. Homestay placements are usually for a minimum of one month and can then be extended.

I have never used such a wonderful course. There are four Modules and they have allowed me to know and learn more. Particularly, in the Writing Module, it was useful to see examples of essays. In the Speaking Module it was useful to see the progression of the whole Interwiev and being able to hear the Interview as well as view the Transcript simultaneously, was very helpful. The “Language Focus” section helped me to refresh and improve my knowledge of Grammar. I highly recommend this Master IELTS course for people who would like to improve their own score on the IELTS test and their General English also.

Q&A Q What is a Package Offer? A A package offer is an offer to study

English and your degree program with MQ or SIBT. If you have decided on your future study plans at MQ or SIBT you can simply apply directly to MI (international.mq.edu.au) or SIBT(sibt.nsw.edu.au) with evidence of your English level. They will assess the number of weeks of English you require and suggest a start date for your English program to coincide with university semester dates. With a package offer you will have the benefit of having a reserved place in your course at MQ or SIBT.
