The Wilson School • Pre-Kindergarten — Sixth Grade
Report from the
Head of School Dear Friends: I wonder if Mabel Wilson envisioned that the school she founded in 1913 would reach 100 years old? Or that 186 students would be filling a newly renovated space with the smiles and laughter of a true joy of learning? The 2012-13 academic year was just that milestone for The Wilson School, and it was such a pleasure to be part of this celebratory year for our thriving school. With the building under construction in September, we started classes in our home away from home at the Maryland Campus. The first days of school always are special at Wilson, and our centennial year was particularly poignant. Beginning in September and throughout the year, our amazing students and teachers recognized this historic anniversary with monthly assemblies focusing on the decades. The students gave performances and presentations that helped all of us learn about the past 100 years through news events, inventions, clothing styles, popular toys and more. It was quite a sight to behold when, during one assembly, the full student body (and many adults) danced The Twist. Each of these assemblies concluded the same way, with students and faculty singing a commemorative piece written by our very own Rebecca Donaldson. As another special tribute, many members of our community contributed to capturing the rich history of Wilson in a commemorative book. Making it even more special is that one of Wilson’s legends, Eugene D. Ruth, authored this work entitled, The Wilson School; Celebrating Excellence Since 1913. It was no small accomplishment that at the start of 2013, we resumed classes at 400 DeMun Avenue. The building had been lovingly restored, and the entire school community immediately felt at home again. Wilson School was in its 100th calendar year and in a facility befitting of our move into our Second Century of Excellence. Further, the mission-centric projects from the Centennial Campaign were complete. The additions of a library classroom and the innovation room strongly support the way Wilson approaches instruction by using classic and innovative methods. The front entrance is a welcoming statement for the wilson school
families and such a complement to the emphasis we place on being a nurturing environment for children. Throughout the second semester it was a special treat to see the unique benefits of a Wilson education continue to come to life through the achievements of our students. As in years past, the Student Achievements Assembly celebrated students who earned recognitions at local, regional, state-wide and national levels. This always is an inspiring event that speaks strongly to the importance of diligence and putting forth your very best effort. Demonstrating that Wilson values creative arts, the full student population participated in a collective mosaic project. With the assistance of a visiting artist, students completed two striking works of art that are permanently mounted in the hall outside of the innovation room. The accomplishments of our graduating Class of 2013 exemplify well the caliber of our outstanding students and exceptional teachers. The students in the Class of 2013 earned an impressive rate of acceptance to their secondary schools, and these twenty spectacular young ladies and young men ultimately chose attendance at eight prominent local schools. This graduating class also proved its academic prowess by exceeding Wilson’s norm of students scoring in the top ten percentile nationally. Wilson’s centennial was memorable on so many levels, not the least of which was the unique opportunity to connect with and further strengthen our community. The Centennial Gala was a spectacular event, allowing the parents and friends such an enjoyable evening. And in keeping with the pulse of the year, the 2012-13 end of year school picnic was the largest attended Wilson event in history. Over 700 of our ‘closest friends’ came together for wonderful food, great music, and enjoyable activities held at the World’s Fair Pavilion in Forest Park. Words cannot adequately express the gratitude owed to so very many people who made this a truly exceptional 100th year for The Wilson School!

Report from the
Board President Dear Friends: Wilson’s 100th year was truly a remarkable time to celebrate our distinguished history of providing an outstanding education in a nurturing, compassionate environment. Wilson continues to be at the forefront of independent education, and we have undergone vital and exciting strategic initiatives to strengthen and prepare the school for the next 100 years. Through the fire repair, capital construction, fundraising efforts and centennial activities, the Wilson community embraced the tremendous challenges and great opportunities with a strong sense of purpose, dedication and enthusiasm. Fire Repair Efforts On January 7, 2013, Wilson students and faculty resumed classes at 400 DeMun. The preceding nine months were spent restoring the DeMun facility, with much attention given to ensuring we maintain our warm environment while preserving the historic nature of our unique space. The restoration enabled us to reconfigure many of our classroom spaces for optimal learning and relocate key administrative offices for maximum visibility of our school leaders. Capital Construction Projects At the same time as the fire repair, Wilson completed construction of our capital projects – the innovation room, renovated front entrance, expanded foreign language room and dedicated library teaching space. These projects support our mission of blending classic educational practices with innovative techniques. Fundraising Success The transformative capital projects were made possible by the tremendous success of the Wilson Centennial Campaign. During 2012-13, the campaign reached a fundraising milestone of $2.0 million making it the largest and most successful capital campaign in school history. These results enable us to fully fund the capital projects and add to the endowment that is so critical to our future. In addition, for the first time in school history, Wilson achieved 100% parent participation in Annual Giving, raising a total of $248,108 towards our Annual Fund and Excellence Program. The Excellence Program not only supports outstanding professional development opportunities for our faculty (well above the national norm) but is a catalyst for innovation and experiential curriculum. page 2
the wilson school
Looking Forward Over the past ten years, Wilson has been transformed in many ways, with the addition of the gym, the expansion of the library, the establishment of the Excellence Program and the completion of the latest capital projects. Believe it or not, 2003 is the year the entire building was first air-conditioned! Wilson has addressed many of the goals outlined in our 2010 strategic plan, so it is time for us to look to the future. The Board began a new strategic planning process with a day-long retreat in April 2013. At that time, we examined trends among independent schools around the world and discussed areas to explore that can propel Wilson even further. Over an 18-24 month period, trustees, faculty, staff and parent volunteers will delve deeper to gain insights and develop potential strategies in excellence in marketing, internationalism and globalism, and new revenue sources. We have outstanding leadership overseeing this strategic planning process and, by fall 2014, the Board hopes to share the results that will position Wilson for continued success in the next ten years and well beyond. In Conclusion As the parent of a Wilson School graduate, it is clear to me that Wilson’s outstanding educators prepare our students for much success in life. I encourage everyone to engage in our children’s education and immerse yourself in the Wilson community. The strength of our programs, the quality of faculty and staff, and the achievements and success of our students are second to none. Thank you all for your overwhelming support of Wilson during this transformative year. I am deeply grateful for the dedication, enthusiasm, hard work and patience shown by our families, faculty, administration, friends and trustees as we completed the fire restoration and capital construction projects and returned to our ‘home’ at 400 DeMun. The Wilson community is truly special, and I am thankful to be a part of it.
