FALL 2020

Resurgence is about de-segregating old Dubai and re-popularizing Old Dubai. This work tries to reverse the neighborhood decline by bringing back the Emiratis to their ancestral home and all segments of society by mixing all societal classes. Along with changing times, a lot of these middle-class families moved out of the area. The aim

here is to rehabilitate the area to blend with the existing culture and Heritage, bring back Emiratis, reverse the cycle, and balance sustainable living demographics. After all, the UAE is where culture meets, even with changing times

The site includes old buildings, demolished and certain included and revamped and connected to new extensions to give continuity while ensuring a clear hierarchy and articulation of space. The main struggle for this project was its dense urban fabric, and the knitted area had to be well planned.

That’s where the modularity of the project comes in. Balconies with roof gardens and the park below give the place a revamp where public and private realms converge.

Social and physical boundaries are dissolved when different groups can meet on the ground floor of the central park.

Platform is about an integrated rehabilitation program while activating, reflecting, and incorporating new functions that would revive the central importance to the city’s fabric. The project is built around the primary goal of ordering integrated public spaces. These public spaces go from the ground floor to the leading platforms and the roof pathways leading to roof gardens. The main intention here is to create a hub between the Gold Souq and the ultimate site, which acts as a surprise element or a hidden gem.

The term “Sustainability” is undoubtedly not innovative or new; it is an idea that has been implemented and expressed in the traditional architecture of several regions in the world through the harmony between buildings, the surrounding environment and the good utilization of natural recourses, which has evolved throughout the years through trial and error.

My aim was to ameliorate the heart of Dubai. Bring back the ancient contemporary courtyard with a twist and in a more revived manner.

By playing around with bare columns and floating building, I have given the fine method of housing with a bit of ancient passive ventilation techniques.

The housing complex comprises of one bedroom, three bedroom and a few terrace gardens.

My Urban design feature is grounded in the community context of each individual space, believing that the surrounding elements will have a major impact on the aesthetic considerations of the project.

Thus I have broken down the monotonous approachto junction centralized meeting points, to a specialized linear boulevard. The main plaza is a complete pedestrian friendly space to encourage people from different zones to engage with the surrounding whereabouts. The plaza is surrounded by variousbuildings around, providing shade through the plaza.

For this project our aim was to provide a hybrid working environment specifically catering to start up companies and organizations within the vicinity. This gives us an opportunity to encourgae diversity within a workspace.

We plan on orienting our focal point towards a very important exisiting element of our site, which faces towards the North direction, the Dubai Creek. This not only provides with the luxurious view but also directs passive air circulation. Thinking in terms of working spaces that are in demand today, we found out that vegetation interior and exterior, play an important role in a person’s work environment. We believe that this can be done through syncing green spaces within the protruding masses of the building.

My first approach in making this a sustainable building was to tackle the sun and the heat gain by using many differentfaces and combining them as an envelope.I introduced roof ovehangs and extended slabs for shading. Enough roof for ventilation and an angled pitched roof for to reflect the sunlight. With enough openings for ventilation the building is naturally ventilated. And naturally lit.
