This handbook will guide you through your organization’s recruiting efforts at CMU, including how to register with Career Services, who to contact and best times to visit campus. Our Career Services office is committed to connecting you with students we’re confident will become some of your best employees. This handbook explains how Career Services can support you throughout your recruitment process, highlighting our recruitment system called Handshake, and how you can make the most of it. It’s a tool you can use to post jobs and internships, sign up to attend events and career fairs, and share information with students about your company. There are nearly 400 registered student organizations at CMU encompassing academic, cultural, professional and personal interests. Employer Spotlight program A more in-depth on-campus recruiting option that allows you to spend time in the classroom(s) of students pursuing the majors and programs from which you want to recruit. Information sessions Host an evening information session on campus to connect with students pursuing majors and programs from which you want to recruit. The professional sales networking night is hosted by Pi Sigma Epsilon, the professional sales fraternity. This event is specifically for students with sales majors or minors and is always held the night before the Alpha Kappa Psi career day. It is typically attended by representatives from more than 40 firms and more than 150 students.

SEPT. 14 MEET THE RECRUITERS Meet the recruiters night, sponsored by Beta Alpha Psi, is a targeted career event for CMU undergraduate and graduate students and recent alumni with majors or minors in accounting, finance and information systems related areas. Company representatives and students network and discuss internships and entry-level professional job opportunities. This event is widely promoted to the specific majors listed and attracts up to 300 students.
SEPT. 15 COLLEGE OF SCIENCE & ENGINEERING CAREER FAIR This event, hosted by the newly renamed College of Science & Engineering and Career Services, will be targeting the recruitment of majors such as: information technology, computer science, various engineering disciplines, mathematics and the sciences. PROFESSIONAL SALES NETWORKING NIGHT
AMERICAN MARKETING ASSOCIATION FAIR CMU’s American Marketing Association fair connects students majoring in marketing, advertising and sales with internships and full-time opportunities in their desired fields. Participants include members of CMU’s American Marketing Association, as well as other students who are interested in marketing-related careers. SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT NETWORKING EVENT This networking event is hosted by the supply chain management council, a supply chain and logistics association. It is specifically for students with logistics and supply chain majors or minors and usually is held the night before the Alpha Kappa Psi career day.
OCT. 13 ALPHA KAPPA PSI CAREER DAY The Alpha Kappa Psi career day is sponsored by the Alpha Kappa Psi co-ed professional business fraternity, Career Services and the College of Business Administration. It’s open to all CMU undergraduate majors, graduate students and recent alumni and draws up to 1,450 students per event. Participants are encouraged to dress professionally and bring resumes. The ERPsim competition is a sophisticated business simulation running on SAP during which teams compete in managing a fictitious business. The goal is to have the best performing company as indicated by the most profit earned. During the annual event teams of four students and one mentor compete for thousands of dollars in scholarships.

Select “yes” or “no.” If you’re a third-party recruiter, meaning that you’re going to post jobs on behalf of another company with the intent of finding candidates for that company to hire, select “yes,” and read and agree to comply with Handshake’s third-party recruiting policies.

HANDSHAKE CAREER MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
FIRST IMPRESSIONS
As an employer, you use Handshake as a recruitment management system, but it also serves as a career planning and job search tool for students. Students use it to share their resume, research jobs and employers, apply for jobs, schedule interviews, and more.
A peer-to-peer donation-based service dedicated to dressing CMU students for success at job interviews, conferences, career fairs and internships. All CMU students are eligible to apply for the service, in which they receive professional clothing that is free of charge and theirs to keep after the professional event.
CAREER COACHES
REACH ADVISING PROGRAM
Students meet one-on-one with a staff member who guides them in selecting a major and future career that suits their personal and academic interests. Career coaches help students define and refine their career goals and obtain the skills and experiences they need to be successful.
Walk-in student-led advising that assists fellow students with application materials such as resumes and cover letters, as well as provides general guidance on career planning.
CAPITAL CITY INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
MOCK INTERVIEW PROGRAM
A student internship program offered in the governmental and public sector in Lansing and throughout Michigan. Participants intern in a variety of legislative, executive and special interest offices. Free transportation from Mount Pleasant to Lansing is provided based on student need.
Scheduled student-led mock interviews give CMU students and alumni the opportunity to practice articulating their experience, skills, interests and goals in a customized simulation. A feedback session focusing on successes and areas for improvement in verbal and nonverbal communications follows the mock interview. 13
