Courtney Michelle Green Summer 2009
Name: Courtney Green Age: 19 Date: Friday, July 17, 2009 Goals related to art: I want to refine my own style and explore different mediums and outlets for my art. I want to put my art to the use of something that will change the world.
Describe yourself as a person (minimum of 5 adjectives): I am observant, curious, dedicated, creative, confident, emotional, and accepting yet picky. Favorite color(s): Violet, Green, Blue, Black, and Pink are my favorites, but I like other colors more when they paired with contrasting ones. Favorite style(s) of art: Surrealism and minimalism.
Favorite animal: Red Panda Favorite film(s): The Fountain, Garden State, Journey to the Center of the Earth, Sunshine, Star Trek Who is your inspiration? Many musicians inspire me, one who always does is Mika Nakashima, a Japanese singer and actress because she is so daring and bold and her voice is beautiful. When are you most inspired to create art (time of day)? Late at night or early in the morning. What intrigues you and inspires you to create art? Be specific: Nature; mainly trees , water, and the sky, and the physical and personal uniqueness and spirit of people inspire me. Music, anything with a piano, or some lounge music, and definitely some rock and roll always makes me want to create, it’s almost like I can see the colors and shapes in my mind. The universe inspires me a lot to, stars, nebulae, and galaxies; I love how they look like paintings or something and yet they are natural occurrences. What decade(s) do you find most appealing relative to design: I liked the Art Neuvea era 1820’s I believe, and I really like this current decade, because I feel that people are pushing the limits more than ever and creating some amazing things. List types of shapes that appeal to you: I love organic shapes, swirls, and random paint marks and blobs, but they have to be anchored in one way or another by more symmetrical shapes.

What would you like your style to evolve into? I want my style to evolve into a more crisp, elegant, surreal, and emotionally impacting. I have noticed that I need to refine my conceptualizing skills, to make my ideas more clear.
Favorite artists/designers: Jason Chan, Yves Boher, Audrey Kawazaki, A. Andrew Gonzalez, and Annick Poirie are some of my favorites.

Micheal Jackson I was never very interested in Micheal Jackson’s music. He was always playing in the house though because my Mom and sister loved him. I always thought he was a peculiar person, but I never thought very negative things about him. To me he was just another celebrity with another set of issues, nothing very special. However, if I do look at his life, I can completely understand why he was the way he was. You just don’t grow up that way and turn out normal. I guess he just wants to go back and try again. PROPOSAL Twisted Fairy Tale Briar Rose
Courtney Green
awakened, I think this can be a metaphor for people realizing that there is no difference between homosexual and heterosexual love. I want the audience to feel sympathy and relation to the image. I want them to feel a sense of romance and youth when they look at it. The style I want to use is a modern one, similar to Jordi Labanda’s style, but more my own. I plan to use watercolor, acrylic, and pencils and pens to create a classic look with a modern feel. I want to put the two lovers in a more modern environment. Possibly a tattoo parlor or a place where they do piercings. I plan to use symbols such as the gold plates, and the needle, and the briar roses, but in a more modern context. Specific Translations: The Prince becomes the Princess, a heroin of the story. The environment becomes something more like a modern city, perhaps New York. The lady using the Spindle becomes a man giving someone a tattoo. The 13th wise woman would be a nun. The briar patch would be symbolized by barbed wire. The roses would be tattoo designs on the walls of the shop.

After reading the original, and researching the many reincarnations of this fairy tale, I have decided that I want to redesign this fable into something more modern, that fits with the concerns of current youth. The reason I like the story the way the Brothers Grimm wrote it is because it is very ambiguous. With that ambiguity, I propose to make this a piece about coming to terms with homosexuality. A lot of my friends are homosexual, and they have often shared their frustrations and confusion with me. They told me that the hardest part was about finding their identity, and being accepted as they are. People judge youth harshly enough as it is, and now, more than ever, people are dismissing homosexuality in teens and young adults as an excuse to be promiscuous or to get attention. Sadly, it still occurs that families and even strangers look down upon homosexuals, thinking them immoral or corrupt in some way. In this piece, I want to show the innocence and purity of love, homosexual or not. I want to show that regardless of sexual preference, love is love. I think that Little Briar Rose is a good base for this expression because it is about young people, Briar Rose, and the Prince are only in their teens. Also, the Prince had to go through a lot just to get to her. I really like the twist that in the end, everyone is
