Here we are in the middle of the summer lull except Sunrise Lions. We’ve been very busy. I want to especially thank Cathy CrossReese and everyone who supported her in the Lacey 4th of July Party and Lacey South Sound Barbeque Festival last month. Flags were also a big project in July too; thank you all for making the city look very patriotic.

Dates To Remember August August 7th - LSL BOD Meeting, 6500 Mullen Rd , 7:00 PM August 11th - LSL Family Picnic, Randy Harris, 1200 PM September September 4th - LSL BOD Meeting, LFD #3, 7:00 PM September 8th - Spaghetti Dinner and Bingo October October 2nd - LSL BOD Meeting, LFD #3, 7:00 PM November

A quick look ahead I see Thurston County Fair we will be involved in and we have our summer picnic hosted by Randy and Susan Harris. As we get closer to the end of August…backpacks will need to be filled up! We formed a budget committee and formulated a new Lions year budget. There are some areas we are concerned with regard to fund raising. Our projections show we will likely be lower on funds than the previous year based on some changes in a couple fund raising projects. I am interested in working on some grants if we can find some folks to help out there we could definitely use it. Ok! Let’s finish out the summer with a bang!

GET INVOLVED WITH MYLION by Michael Scott (Dexter, Ill Lions Club) ·If

there’s one thing we know about Lions, it’s that they love getting involved. Lions and Leos are service role models around the world and now you can be a MyLion leader as well! If you want to learn more about MyLion, contribute suggestions for enhancements, or help fellow users get support, check out three ways to join the conversation on our new service tool. 1. Join the MyLion Support Forum on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/groups/MyLionSupport/ The MyLion Support Forum was originally a Lion-created and Lion-led Facebook group for discussing everything MyLion. Since it was created a year ago, over 1500 Lions have joined the group to ask questions, fill gaps in their knowledge, and help out fellow users. Not sure how to set up your service? Have a great idea for a new MyLion app feature? Looking for the best way to find local service activities? Ask the MyLion Support Forum, and get help from the dedicated Lions who post there every day. The group also has staff members from Lions International headquarters (many of whom are Lions, too!) and representatives from our tech partners who are developing MyLion. Whether a question, issue, or suggestion, this group will have the support you need. 2. Work with your Global Action Team The Global Action Team exists at every level of Lions International and is a MyLion resource. Check out who in your club, district, multiple district, or constitutional area represents the Global Action Team, particularly the Global Service Team, and share your experiences on MyLion with them. These leaders will make sure your insights reach the Global Action Team specialists at Lions International and that your feedback is incorporated into our MyLion development plans.

July Board of Directors Recap The meeting was called to order at 6:30PM by King Lion Jim; Secretary’s report and correspondence was provided by Peggy. The minutes of the June board meeting were approved as presented with a motion from Gail and a second from Frankie. Financial Report was provided by Gail for the month; which can be viewed upon request. Peggy made a motion to approve the report and Shad second the motion. Old Business: Dennis Reed brought a request from North Thurston Band Parent Association for a donation to provide musical instruments for students. This will be tabled until we get a budget. Pat Bucknell has a sign up sheet, entry form and insurance binder for LSL to ride in our trailer and be part of the Lakefair parade. Our club is looking for a Diabetes chairperson and will seek advice or direction from Sharon Sikes. For New Business: Dennis Reed asked if we are interested in Olympia Little Theater for this year. We made $188. We will ask again at next meeting. Thurston County Fair promotion coming up: August 1 through 5th. We need 4 people each day. 2 per shift. Shifts are 10AM to 2 PM and 2PM to 6PM. Look for sign up. Chris Beck is looking to join a Lions club outside Rainier. Induction and Orientation for our new members will be at Bucknell’s on 7/18 at 8PM. Peggy reported we have 5 members that need to be dropped due to non payment of dues and non participation. Shad made a motion to drop them and 2nd from Frankie. Motion carried. Apple sales will be a little different this year. They will arrive in 40 lb boxes and the cost will be $40. The club will still receive $10 per box. WHAT DO YOU SAY TO A YOUNG PROSPECTIVE LION WHEN THEY ASK WHY THEY NEED TO PAY DUES TO VOLUNTEER? Richard Stevenson, South Tucson Lions Club

When you are speaking to a potential new lion, how can you respond to: “Why do I have to pay to volunteer?” When you join the Lions you are not just a “volunteer”, you are a member of an organization that supports and manages volunteer projects. Since 100% of the money we raise from the public goes back to the public, we must pay for our overhead ourselves, to include but not be limited to, insurance, global brand management, fund raising infrastructure, (accounting, IRS reporting requirements, non-profit status, advertising, etc.), mail boxes, office supplies, etc. Also, explain that all Lions are volunteers and none are receiving benefits or salaries from the dues. You should have an understanding of the various parts of the dues, club, district, MD and LCI and be prepared to explain where the money goes. Explain that there are also benefits beyond just volunteering when you become a Lion. You will be a member in the world’s largest service organization with the camaraderie of fellow Lions, various social activities, and you will be working with community leaders and have access to training and gaining management experience. Know the various types of membership and the associated dues, member, family member, student, Leo, etc. to insure that you will be joining the Lion with the lowest possible dues. Break the dues down per month and compare them to other expenses that we all pay regularly. Cell phone, cable TV, a dinner out, etc. All things considered, our dues are not expensive for what we receive in return. Then ask the prospective Lion what they think, and if you have answered the question for them.

What can club members do to keep dues low to encourage joining new members. Encourage your club to keep admin costs paid for by dues as low as possible. Manage your admin expenses aggressively. Do not make non-club administrative expenses part of the dues. Examples are expenses for social activities, club meals, subsidies, gifts to officers, paying expenses for officers, Lions election campaigns, etc. Raise these monies from the Tail Twister, raffles and club shirt sales, etc. Recognize that what the club is charged for members by LCI/MD/district is not what the club has to charge its members. Clubs regularly charge more than their costs to cover LCI/MD/District, but they could also charge less. Encourage your club to price dues based upon club membership goals. If you want new members, consider having first year members only pay half the regular dues. If you want younger members, consider lower dues for people in their lower earning years. Set your dues to support your overall membership goals. If your district and/or MD have set membership goals, perhaps you can talk them into altering the fees they charge the clubs to encourage achieving these goals. As a Lions club member you can also encourage your club to collect the dues semiannually or even monthly to keep them as affordable as possible. Insure that your club takes advantage of the different membership categories available to them. Make sure each member is registered in the appropriate membership category. Consider having an established member pay for the dues of a younger member if money is an issue that might prevent them from becoming a Lion and they would become a Lion that would contribute to your club.
