From The Dean: At its core, Cleveland-Marshall College of Law is a collection of exceptional individuals.
T
he students, faculty, and staff of this institution make up a significant portion of this group, along with the community of our friends who have recognized the quality of our legal education. However, none of the outstanding accomplishments of today’s Cleveland-Marshall students would be possible without the support of their predecessors — an engaged alumni whose support of their alma mater is unparalleled. Through the mentoring and guidance they provide to current students, and their generous financial support, our alumni consistently show their commitment to Cleveland-Marshall’s tradition of producing graduates who are prepared to enter the workforce. During this past year, giving to Cleveland-Marshall reached a new level as alumni participation rose to 11% for the first time in school history. The total number of donors increased 21% from the previous year with over 120 first-time donors contributing to the Annual Fund. These gifts to the Annual Fund help us increase Cleveland-Marshall’s growing local and national influence, support scholarships, and fund programs critical to ensuring that students have the opportunity to maximize the value of their time in law school.

Cleveland State University
Scholarship support is critical to the College of Law as we continue to operate in an extremely challenging legal education environment. Over the last few years, it has become increasingly difficult to attract talented students. In this competitive market, 80% of our students receive some financial assistance in the form of scholarships, in part made possible by donations to the Annual Fund and named scholarship funds. The Cleveland-Marshall Law Alumni Association also has played a critical role in attracting and retaining talented and well-rounded students this year by providing over $60,000 in scholarships — more than four times the scholarship dollars committed by the Association in any previous year. Looking forward, we plan to continue an aggressive approach to find new and innovative means to connect current students and alumni. Our goal is to welcome and encourage alumni involvement with ClevelandMarshall, through mentoring current students, attending our free Transformative Dialogue CLEs, participating in programming related to their areas of expertise, and influencing the direction of the law school through participation in various law school advisory groups. In connection with these efforts, our goal is to achieve 15% alumni giving this upcoming year, a number that would make Cleveland-Marshall the clear leader among Ohio law schools, and send a message that our alumni truly share a lifelong relationship with our school and are committed to the advancement of the legal profession. The donors listed in this book play a critical role in the success of this law school, and I speak for those involved by saying that we are truly grateful. I hope you will again join me in making an Annual Fund contribution, and I encourage you to energize your friends and former classmates to do the same as together we strive to establish this law school as a leader for years to come. Dear Fellow Graduates and Friends of Cleveland-Marshall:
A
s the new chair of the Cleveland-Marshall Annual Fund Campaign, I join Dean Boise in thanking you for your generous support of the College of Law. Your investment played a critical role in the success of the 2013-2014 Annual Fund Campaign.
Last year, with your help, Cleveland-Marshall made history with an all-time high of 11% alumni giving to the Annual Fund. We are also proud to report that giving to the Annual Fund increased by 4%, online giving was up for the second year in a row by 27%, 16 law firms joined our 100% Club by securing 100% alumni giving in the Law Firm Giving Challenge, and from FY13 to FY14, we saw a 53% increase in new donors. The 2014-2015 academic year has been declared by Dean Boise as the year of the student, and Cleveland-Marshall has already provided 80% of the incoming class with scholarship assistance. Many of these awards were made possible because of the wonderful support we receive from alumni and friends. All gifts, regardless of size, make an impact and express commitment to Cleveland-Marshall. We hope that you will help us achieve this year’s goal of 15% alumni participation to the Annual Fund. Please consider being a key player in the success of our students. We hope that you will not only contribute to our Annual Fund this year but also consider increasing the amount of your gift.
Thank you again for your support of Cleveland-Marshall College of Law. Steven W. Percy ’79 Annual Fund Chair Former Chairman & CEO, BP America, Inc.

Dear Alumni and Friends:
A
s the proud President of the Cleveland-Marshall Law Alumni Association for the 2014-2015 academic year, I’d like to thank you for your continued support of the Cleveland-Marshall Annual Fund this past year. The perennial support of our alumni and friends continues to propel ClevelandMarshall to recognize greater achievements both regionally and nationally. The CMLAA’s partnership and stewardship allow the law school to offer the best educational experience to law students available in Ohio. This past year, the association and the law school formally renewed our joint missions to present timely and relevant CLEs, social events, networking and professional opportunities, student mentoring and new lawyer training for both our members and the current students. I am proud to report that the Alumni Association will provide over $60,000 in fiscal year 2014 directly to scholarships for our students. It is the focus of our association to assist the faculty and administration of the law school to provide the greatest ability to attract and maintain the finest future young professionals who will be needed for the continued rebirth of our law school, great city, region and state. Attendance at our annual recognition luncheon in May was again strong as almost 1,000 members of the legal and business community joined to celebrate the breadth of achievement enjoyed by our distinguished alumni and to help us welcome a new class of graduates to our ranks. Many thanks to my fellow officers and board members for their support and hard work. Our board shares the great diverseness and eclectic passion for our profession that is taught within the walls of the law school. You can find the current roster of the Association’s Board listed on page 32 of this publication. We are always looking to engage with our former classmates, so if you would like to get involved for the first time or to reconnect after some time away — the time is now! Contact any of our Board Members or, for more information on how to join as a member, go to www.cmlaa.org. Thank you for your commitment to Cleveland-Marshall and for your support of our students. As a “third” generation Cleveland-Marshall graduate (and along with my wife and fellow ’94 graduate Jennifer), it is my honor and privilege to lead this outstanding organization at such an exciting time. I look forward to seeing you this year at one of our many events. Sincerely, James P. Sammon ’94 President, 2014-2015, Cleveland-Marshall Law Alumni Association Sammon & Bolmeyer Co., LPA

Honor Project Trust Supports
Cleveland-Marshall’s Solo Practice Incubator Initiative
C
leveland-Marshall College of Law’s Solo Practice Incubator initiative received significant support from Judge John J. Russo ’92, through charitable funds donated by the Honor Project.
The Honor Project was established through cy pres doctrine — if there are unclaimed funds in a class action settlement, a judge can use the cy pres doctrine to distribute funds that remain for beneficial use. The Ohio Attorney General’s Office requested that Judge Russo, the presiding judge in the case State of Ohio, et al. v. American International Group, Inc., et al, distribute the funds under the Court’s equitable powers. In total, the Honor Project Trust distributed more than six million dollars to 226 charitable organizations across the State of Ohio, including Cleveland-Marshall College of Law. “As an alumnus, it was great to be able to give back,” Judge Russo said. “I know this gift is going to a project that will directly benefit students and recent graduates of the school.” The newly opened incubator provides low-cost resources and office space for recent law graduates looking to start their careers as legal entrepreneurs. Occupants also receive guidance on the practical management of the business and the handling of cases as they navigate the start-up phase of their practices.

M
cCarthy, Lebit, Crystal & Liffman Co., LPA and the McCarthy family teamed with additional donors to recognize the firm’s founding partner, Daniel McCarthy, with a gift in support of the Solo Practice Incubator. The incubator’s conference room will be named after McCarthy as a way to honor his legacy of mentoring new lawyers. The Daniel McCarthy Conference Room will be available to occupants as a
resource for business meetings and presentations.
“When we learned that Cleveland-Marshall was creating the Solo Practice Incubator, throwing our support behind it to honor our founder, Dan McCarthy, made perfect sense. He loved Cleveland-Marshall, the practice of law and the opportunity to help educate and mentor young professionals. Although many schools have helped to form the foundation of Cleveland’s outstanding legal community, in my opinion, no school has been more instrumental in sustaining our legal community than Cleveland-Marshall. In large part, Dan’s legacy was achieved because of the education he received at Cleveland-Marshall. Our continuing support of the Solo Practice Incubator in his memory will continue to help others reach their goals and keep his dreams alive.” Kenneth B. “At this challenging time for both law schools and aspiring lawyers, the Annual Fund provides essential resources to undergird Cleveland-Marshall’s innovative curriculum, motivated faculty and commitment to students. Of particular personal importance is the role of the Annual Fund in expanding student scholarships. Without the law school’s economic assistance, my law degree would not have been possible.” - Benjamin Beckman ’10 / Associate, Jones Day

e choose to support Cleveland-Marshall because we’ve been able to witness firsthand the high-quality education students receive from an outstanding collection of professors, and the impressive accomplishments those students have gone on to achieve in law and business. Under the leadership and vision of Dean Boise and with the support of CSU, Cleveland-Marshall has championed
innovative ways to reach unique students, including through the Great Lakes Sports and Entertainment Law Academy. Educational opportunities such as the Academy give students a head start in their professions with practical experience that is critical in this day and age. Through these learning opportunities, we want to help the best and brightest students succeed in athletics or whatever field they choose to pursue, and we are privileged to be able to also support talented Cleveland-Marshall students through the Captains Scholarship. Cleveland-Marshall Dean Appointed Joseph C. Hostetler – Baker & Hostetler Chair in Law Cleveland-Marshall College of Law is pleased to announce the creation of the Joseph C. Hostetler – Baker & Hostetler Chair in Law. The Chair in Law was created through generous gifts from John D. Drinko, a former managing partner of the firm, and other donors, and is the first chaired professorship created at Cleveland-Marshall College of Law. Hewitt B. Shaw, Managing Partner of BakerHostetler’s Cleveland office, said “BakerHostetler is honored to have our firm’s name closely identified with the
Cleveland-Marshall College of Law
innovative and progressive leadership demonstrated by Dean Craig M. Boise.” Dean Boise noted that BakerHostetler has been a strong supporter of ClevelandMarshall over the years, having previously underwritten visiting professors, named professors, annual lectures, and student scholarships. “We are grateful for BakerHostetler’s many generous contributions to the law school, and I am honored to be connected to the long tradition of excellence and innovation at the firm through the Chair in Law.”

LEGACY
T
he Legacy Society, formerly known as the Stapleton Legacy Society, consists of individuals who have generously included Cleveland-Marshall in their estate plans. The Stapleton Legacy Society was aptly named for Dean Wilson G. Stapleton ’34, who served for 32 years as a faculty member and then as dean. He is best remembered for his legacy of kindness to the students and his willingness to help them as alumni.
Through the Legacy Society we show our gratitude to individuals who, like Dean Stapleton, care deeply about law students of the future and have included Cleveland-Marshall in their estate plans, through wills, living trusts or other types of planned or deferred gifts. Membership in the Legacy Society is open to those who have made a planned or deferred commitment to the law school using such vehicles as insurance policies, annuities, IRAs and real estate or other bequests. If you have remembered the law school in your estate plans, we will welcome you into the Legacy Society.

Having spent over two decades impacting the students of ClevelandMarshall as a professor and former associate dean before retiring in the summer of 2014, she hopes that students remember an important message she stressed beyond the content of her courses. “I tried to impress students with the idea that it is privilege to be a lawyer,” Becker said. “Sometimes it’s easy to forget that when you are spending all day around other law students or other lawyers.” While working at Cleveland-Marshall, Becker set an example by keeping a modest pro bono docket and by getting involved with the American Civil Liberties Union. She went on to serve four years as president of the ACLU of Ohio’s Board of Directors and is now working with the organization as a volunteer attorney. “Giving back is a core part of what we do at Cleveland-Marshall with the slogan ‘Learn Law. Live Justice.’ I don’t know how you live justice without giving back,” Becker said. Becker’s instinct to give back is also evident in her continued support of ClevelandMarshall. The former professor has donated to the law school each of the past 25 years to support student scholarships and the Mary Kashner Becker Public Interest Fellowship Fund that she founded to honor her late mother. When revising her will in 2006, Becker extended her support by naming Cleveland-Marshall as a beneficiary, and thus became a member of the Legacy Society. “I hope that my gifts to scholarships and the summer fellowship can create opportunities to help a few students attend law school who couldn’t otherwise afford it,” Becker said. Reflecting back on the unique perspective fostered from being both a student and professor at Cleveland-Marshall, Becker credits the school with the amazing opportunities she has enjoyed throughout her career. She also has experienced the pleasure of witnessing firsthand what generations of Cleveland-Marshall students have contributed to the greater good, and Becker hopes that as part of her legacy Cleveland-Marshall students and graduates will continue to give back as integral members of the community. “As lawyers, we have the power to make lives better for people with very simple acts,” Becker said. “It doesn’t take much time to get involved with pro bono projects, and it’s amazing how much satisfaction can be taken from a simple deed.” Cleveland-Marshall College of Law
