Students can create change if they unite their voice. Look at what happened last semester.

Senior Alexandra Garay began a Change.org petition three months ago titled, “CMU students feeding CMU students – creating a meal swipe donation program!” Nearly 6,000 people have signed the petition since its creation, calling for Central Michigan University to make a change. Others provided social media posts and support.

The effectiveness of her effort was immediate. One week after Garay began calling for students to rally together, President Bob Davies announced in his Nov. 27 Presidential Perspectives blog the university would be moving toward a meal “swipe bank” and $1 meal option at the Down Under Food Court.

The programs were launched Jan. 6 and have been in place for the spring semester.

Students came together, expressed their frustrations and forced programs into action. They didn’t wait for the administration to make a change. As a matter of fact, the students were the change.

That’s the power of coming together. Executive Director of Auxiliary Services Cal Seelye agreed. The students, not the administration, made the real difference in pushing to fight food insecurity. “Did the student feedback on Twitter and the poll that went out impact our timeline or expedite things? Absolutely,” Seelye said.

EDITORIAL

The Central Michigan Student Labor Union, following Garay’s petition, organized a protest outside of the Real Food on Campus (RFoC) dining hall. That was another aspect of forcing change that the administration took into notice.

Many of the stories we begin writing and investigating came from comments on Twitter and Facebook. For the meal swipes scenario, we wouldn’t have found out about the situation if it wasn’t for students sharing their opinions.

Within the next week, we’ll be publishing a story about complaints regarding our cafeteria food that stems from Aramark, the company that runs the dining halls on campus.

Again, we wouldn’t be able to write stories like these if students don’t speak up. If it’s a post on social media, anonymous tip to our office or, if you’re up for it, a face-to-face conversation, we take every interaction with fellow students on campus seriously.

We are here to represent you, even if you don’t always agree with us, and communication is important to the way we work as a whole.

When talking about self-care, I like to use the story of a teapot.

You are a nice and caring person with a big teapot full of tea, and you like to share with your friends. Say one day your best friend is going through a rough breakup at school, so you pour her a cup of tea from your teapot to make her feel better. She takes the tea and thanks you for the drink. Then say that evening your coworker approaches you at work and tells you they are being harassed by your superior. You pour her a cup of tea while she talks to you about it to help calm her.

Then say that night your sister comes into your room and she tells you that she’s failing two of her classes, so you pour her a cup of tea to cheer her up. You look down at your teapot and realize that it is completely empty. Now you have to take a break and boil some water, steep the tea, and let it cool before you can give anyone else tea, because you cannot pour from an empty teapot. The same concept applies to self-care. In order to take care of others, you need to take care of yourself first. Learning to say “no” to things that overextend you is an important yet very difficult part of self-care. It is not selfish to say “no” to something at that very moment. A simple “I can’t do that now, how about I get back to you later” is always okay.

Remember, you cannot pour from an empty teapot. If you cannot be there for someone 100 percent, just say no. More often than not, they’ll understand.

Another important part of self care is setting boundaries for yourself. Don’t stay up until 2 a.m. studying for your linear algebra midterm, trust me, it’s doing more harm than good at that point.

Don’t work yourself to death. Set a deadline for yourself to be relaxing and in bed by a certain time every night. If something is not done by your deadline, it can wait until the morning. This will also help you be more productive during the day and to prioritize your tasks

With a deadline, cut yourself off. That means don’t check email, don’t go on BlackBoard, put the phone on do not disturb for the rest of the night and focus on decompressing after a long day

No two people have the same self-care routine. What works for one person might not work exactly the same for the other. You need to figure out what works for you. To do this, try new things. Try journaling, taking naps, going to the gym, crying it out into your pillow, try anything until you find something that helps you relax and feel better about yourself.

How do you realize when your teapot is empty? When you start to feel exhausted and numb. Saying things like “I can’t deal with this right now” or “I don’t care, it doesn’t matter” are warning signs that you are burnt out and just need to take some time to refill your teapot.

Self care is not a luxury, it is a necessity. Take time to love and take care of yourself, so you can love and be there for others. Growing up I always wanted a fairy tale romance, from the meet cute to the happily ever after.

I took pieces from every romance novel I read, romcom I watched and story I heard to make my dream fairytale.

I imagined meeting a guy at a bookstore or library. We would both grab for the same book on the bookshelf and our hands would touch.

In reality, I’ll be lucky if a guy and myself swipe the same way on one another.

The only ways to meet a significant other is by already knowing one another someway and swiping through Bumble or Tinder.

During my freshman year, I got so lonely that I downloaded Tinder. In the back of my head the memories of the cautionary tales from “Catfish: The TV Show” haunted me and caused me to delete it two days later. Eventually, loneliness overpowered my fears and I redownloaded Tinder and also got Bumble.

Societal norms have made any sort of flirting or showing interest to strangers creepy, because it is creepy.

There is no flirting with the stranger in the grocery store or the cute boy from math class. There is no real way to know who is in a relationship, who wants a relationship, who wants something casual or what someones’ sexual orientation is just by seeing them.

Dating apps make so many of these issues nonexistent. Some have features where one can specify what type of relationship they want and can even put on filters for the features of a potential partner.

There are definitely still creeps on dating apps, but it’s one of the only ways to meet someone in this day and age. Dating apps are a necessary evil when trying to meet someone in the current dating world.

In a Pew Research study on dating apps released on Feb. 6, 48 percent of adults aged 18-29 have used a dating app.

I personally don’t want to use dating apps, I actually don’t know of anyone who wants to, but it’s the way of the current dating culture.

A study by ABODO surveyed 3,500 college students who use dating apps. According to the survey, only 4% of the students prefer using dating apps to meet potential dates and 79% prefer to meet in the old fashioned ways, such as mutual interests and friends.

Niche dating apps and sites have been created for people who want to meet people with similar interests and lifestyles, such as FarmersOnly, Christian Mingle and Trump Singles.

I, and evidently a lot of others, prefer to rely on the biography section of profiles to look for similar interests than using niche dating services.

I find that I personally don’t take dating services seriously enough to use niche sites. Although finding a significant other through dating apps is essentially the end goal, I use them for the entertainment aspect more than anything.

The ABODO study shows that a majority of the Tinder and Bumble users use the apps for entertainment.

With so many people using dating apps, regardless of reasoning, it’s practically a necessary course of action for single college students who want a relationship.

Maybe one day my prince charming and I will both swipe right, but until then I’ll be swiping through a copious amount of emotionally unavailable guys. Practicing self care is not a luxury, it is a necessity. Dating apps are a necessary evil for matchmaking in 2020 OPINION
