“It changed a lot, work from home as my daily life, limited space without a loom at the beginning.”

“It has widened my ideas of what textiles can be and has broadened the mediums in which I am working (Photography, Digital programmes, etc...) It has made me aware that I need to re-evaluate my practice. ”

“It has challenged me to tell a more personal retrospective through my art, and be more confident to tell me own experiences and opinions.”

“COVID-19 had many challenges, but there has definitely been gains as well. For example, throughout lockdown, drawing has become an important element in my work. Previously, I have only used drawing as a tool to achieve certain aesthetic or communicate the idea I had before the actual textiles making process. However, with limited access to other making ways, drawing has become a practice itself in exploring my thinkings and emotions.”

“It has restricted access to specialised equipment in other London universities however it has allowed an easier access to question and collaborate with other outside of the UK.”

“Made me Trust the Process more.”

HOW HAS COVID-19 CHANGED OR CHALLENGED YOUR PRACTICE? “I have had time to focus on who I am as a practitioner and where I want my work to go, where it sits. I have had time away from making to focus on research but also I value the making I do now more.”

“Had to develop both my hand-made knitting skills and my digital skills. Weirdly, the opposite ends of the spectrum.”

“I have to use some previous material and hard to try something new like blowing glass.”

“I have started thinking more on the lines of purpose of what I make and what it has to offer to the community. It also pays more attention to how the user’s emotional quotient and how my work can have a positive impact.”

“Without fancy facilities, tools I use have changed. Working alone allows me to find my own voice.”

“I have had to embrace what is in front of me, adapting my work to make use of familiar techniques, reinventing them with fresh eyes. It has also made me appreciate what is important in my work: drawing, making with my hands, and allowing time to play.

“Hard to change my way of creating. Everyone has shifted digital, but I recognised the actual things are the most important.”

“Without access to the print room I’ve had to take a much more mixed media approach.

“As we don’t have any access to the print and dye workshop, I have to use other craft techniques to make my works.”

“It has allowed me to be more resourceful with materials, not as much purchasing, I collect from nature a lot more. It has challenged my inspiration as well since we have been stuck inside the house a lot. I have had to be resourceful with the places I visit nearest my home... more observation of the world because there’s nothing else to do.”

“I was forced to really evaluate my ideas of what I need in order to create. I became really interested in natural materials, biomaterials, and the body. And I’m more interested in what it means to be in community, where my material comes from, and what role I can play in uplifting a natural material narrative.”

“Confined.”

HOW HAS COVID-19 CHANGED OR CHALLENGED YOUR PRACTICE? “Polarised my practice into two directions - the digital and the handmade, forcing to rethink how the two connect.”

“It actually developed my confidence and my will to engage in new projects (digital based project for most of them). It freed my practice and my creativity deeply.”

“Pushed me to dare more, experiment more and be even more honest with my own work. Opened my mind on different practices and ways of working.”

“It makes me to focus more on working with my hands and the materials I have around me.”

“More introspection and less comparing.”

“It’s really heightened a need for the physical, and I’ve had to think a lot more about digital communication than I would’ve before. It’s fast-forwarded some parts like getting a studio, and slowed others, like workshops and community based projects.”
