WELCOME to the 2020-2021 Pacifica

Chamber of Commerce Visitor Guide & Business Directory. This is a challenging time for our community and businesses with the pandemic and the fires. One of our greatest resources, our beaches, were closed on the holidays and restricted under the Shelter in Place (SIP) rules.

Every day, we see examples of our resilience. Our hotels have housed essential works and people who require alternative housing. Our restaurants and grocery stores have worked hard to keep the shelves full and a variety of takeout available! All of this was done while learning how to adapt to the changing requirements from the State, County and City of Pacifica. Some businesses used this time to make repairs and rethink how to do business in our new environment. Masks and social distancing are a part of how we are personally taking responsibility to protect ourselves and our community. While the Chamber remains closed to the public as a result of SIP, we continue to welcome and answer emails and calls to support local businesses, community and visitors. Please consider us a resource should you have questions in this time of uncertainty, and we will do our best to assist you. We increased the frequency of our newsletter to provide current information and to put a spotlight on our businesses. At the Chamber, our most frequent calls are, “Is there fishing on the pier? Is the beach and Farmers Market open? We have provided a friendly response to visitors that we welcome their inquiries and provide our status. A special thanks to the City of Pacifica for making needed repairs on the Pacifica Pier during this time. The Chamber looks forward in the near future to again sponsoring the Business Awards Dinner, Taste of Pacifica and the Rockaway Tree Lighting. The Chamber has worked closely with our members, contacting each one to compile this directory. Please reach out to them to use their services and a give a big THANK YOU for their support. Pacifica is made up of neighborhoods of friends and families that through sports, social activities, and business opportunities are facing this unprecedented challenge together. Stay Safe,

HOURS IN PACIFICA

By Jean Bartlett

B

efore heading out to ask “strolling” locals, “What are your top picks of things to do in Pacifica in a 48-hour period,” (see their answers starting on page 7), it’s important to lay out some Pacifica essentials. For instance, enjoying the beautiful Pacific Ocean comes with every Pacifica hotel and inn accommodation choice. Those choices are: Americas Best Value Inn, Anchor Inn, Holiday Inn Express & Suites, Inn at Rockaway, Nick’s Sea Breeze Motel, Pacifica Lighthouse Hotel and the Pacifica Beach Hotel.

Then there are the City’s stunning parks and trails and they include: Sweeney Ridge, San Pedro Valley Park, Mori Point, Pedro Point Headlands, Milagra Ridge, Frontierland Park, the Devil’s Slide Coastal Trail, and the seven-mile waterfront trail that stretches and winds from Sharp Park to Linda Mar. Pacifica’s outdoor amenities also include: the City’s famous fishing pier (crab or fish for free!); the historic, seaside, 18-hole Sharp Park Golf Course; and beautiful beaches. Pacifica State Beach in Linda Mar is a surfer favorite.

Pacificans love their history and celebrate their arts. Visit the Pacifica Coastside Museum at the 1910-built Little Brown Church. Investigate the Sanchez Art Center Galleries. Listen to a weekend concert at Pacifica Performances. Catch a play at the Pacifica Spindrift Players. Turn the clock back and tour the 1846-built Sanchez Adobe, the oldest San Mateo County building open to the public. There is so much more.

As to the question, “What are your top picks of things to do in Pacifica in a 48-hour period?” – it turns out the locals asked had so much to say about their Pacifica favorites, that in the interest of article length, fewer people were asked than originally planned. So pull up a chair and have, as the Pacifica Chamber of Commerce would say, “A Taste of Pacifica!” Answerers range in age from 26 to 96.

Pacifica resident Begin those 48 hours with an Indian dinner at Masala Indian Cuisine, then head to Winters Tavern to hear live music and grab a brew. For the first full day, enjoy a bite and a cup of artisan coffee at Soul Grind, conveniently next to Linda Mar Beach. If you’re feeling outdoorsy, enjoy the beach and/or head over to the Devil’s Slide Trail. If you’re feeling indoorsy, peruse the antique stores: You Name It in Pacific Manor, and Vintage Cove and In the Attic nearby on Palmetto, and don’t forget to stop at Florey’s Books, also on Palmetto. Next – dinner at Devil’s Slide Taproom. They have mouth-watering burgers and sandwiches, which are paired perfectly with a selection of their 40 rotating beers on tap. Finally, spend your last day in Pacifica treating yourself with upscale picnic foods at Oceana Market and head over to San Pedro Valley Park. You can walk a family-friendly trail or try to reach the summit!

Joe and Christine Stinson

San Bruno residents We’ll take our 48 hours on the weekend! Starting Friday night, we’d check into our Rockaway Beach hotel, the Holiday Inn Express. We’ll spend the whole night in the Rockaway Beach area. We’d begin with wine at A Grape in the Fog. Then we’d head to Nick’s Restaurant for dinner, their Crab Louie is our favorite, with their garlic bread of course. www.pacificachamber.com • 7

Saturday morning, it’s breakfast at Breakers. The best part about Breakers, besides the food, is the 1950s music they play over their sound system. Then we’d head to the Pacifica Pier for a walk. Then it’s back to Rockaway Beach for cocktails and dinner at the Moonraker Restaurant. Then to Nick’s, this time for dancing. Sunday morning we’d go to the

Chit Chat Cafe on W. Manor Drive for acoustic music, bagels and coffee. Then we’d have a late lunch at El Toro Loco in Sharp Park. It’s family-owned and the food is fabulous. We’d finish our 48 plus-hours at Winters Tavern where we’d enjoy Irish coffees and fantastic live music from 4 to 7. Some of the best musicians in the world play Winters. Wait, how can we fit in Pedro Point Brewing in Manor? We love their beer selections and singer Tré Taylor performs there. We are big fans of Tré.

Chat Cafe at the Pier for coffee and then a stroll along the pier. From there, walk to the antique stores on Palmetto and investigate. Later, dinner at the Pacifica Brewery followed by dancing at Nick’s in Rockaway. That’s Day One! Day Two. Start the day with coffee and a light pastry at Mazzetti’s Bakery. Then a bit later, hike up to Mori Point with a picnic of sandwiches from Colombo’s Delicatessen. Head home, or to your hotel, and enjoy a mixed drink of rum from Tripp Distillery and juice from Oceana Market. If it’s still possible to move, dinner at Paisanos Trattoria & Pizzeria is always nice. Too bad it’s only 48 hours. There are so many more choices!

Marv Morganti

Pacifica resident If I had a couple of days to explore Pacifica, as a near 60-year resident, I would check into the Pacifica Beach Hotel on Crespi and enjoy a room with a spa, fortified with a bottle of white wine that I picked from the large selection at Grocery Outlet in Pedro Point. Then I’d head off to dinner at the Vallemar Station. It’s got everything and it’s an interesting place. It used to be a train station along the old Ocean Shore Railroad. The next morning, I’d head to Breakers in Rockaway for breakfast. Then during the day, I’d visit places of long ago in Pacifica’s history to see how things have changed and then new spots like the Pacifica Coastside Museum.

- By Jean Bartlett

In 1957, nine separate coastal communities incorporated to become the City of Pacifica. From the start, it was a community led by its families. These families helped build schools, laid the groundwork for community resources and saw to it that local legislation served the locals. They also ran businesses. In one area, the Pacific Manor District, the families of early business owners grew up together.

In 1955, George and June Lee opened Save More Meat Market on West Manor Drive. Their sons, Matthew and Kevin, have run the old-fashioned, service-oriented butcher shop since the late 1980s. Matthew and Kevin are, in turn, friends with Bill Meyerhoff Sr.’s sons, Tim and Bill. The senior Meyerhoff opened Seaview Tire & Brake Center on West Manor www.pacificachamber.com • 11

Sidney and Silvia Wheatley opened Camelot Fish and Chips on West Manor Drive in 1969. Their daughter Karen and her daughter Kasey run it now. The Wheatley family, the Meyerhoff family and the Lee family have been friends for decades. You can also add the Mazzetti family into that longtime “friends” mix and the Colombo family. In 1974, Rudy Mazzetti, his mom and his sister, opened Mazzetti’s Bakery on Manor Drive. Rudy and his wife Julie run it now, and their daughter Angela is the bakery’s head decorator. In 1986, Emil Sr. and Doris Colombo opened Colombo’s Delicatessen in Manor Plaza. Their sons, Emil and Brian, their late daughter, Shirley, Brian’s sons and his nephew, have all been instrumental to its success. These family-owned businesses in Pacific Manor and throughout Pacifica are a profound point of

community pride. In 2019, to acknowledge this important history and to celebrate a next generation continuing a family business, the Pacifica Chamber of Commerce created the Next Generation Award. The first recipient was Nick’s Sea Breeze Motel. Its family-owned business start dates back to 1927.

“The bottom line is we all have successful, generational-run family businesses here because we care,” Bill Meyerhoff said. “We work hard for the trust we are given. We are there for our customers and we are there for each other. Pacifica is a beautiful place but the main thing that makes Pacifica the best is the people. All of us really love this community we work in.”

The first recipient of the chamber’s Next Generation Award was Nick’s Sea Breeze Motel. Its family-owned business start dates back to 1927.

From Illegal to Essential A message from Archie Judan, Founder, Cannabis Wellness Center

T

he United States currently has 14 states that provide recreational cannabis and more than half of the country has implemented some form of access. The cannabis industry has not only brought jobs to the City of Pacifica, but public opinion has been very welcoming and economic growth looks very promising as the industry begins to grow.

14 • Pacifica Visitor Guide & Business Directory

Many have turned to cannabis as an aid to help them cope with everyday stressors, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic and increasingly throughout the nation due to the acceptance of its health benefits. The cannabis industry was unaffected by Shelter-In-Place as they are considered an essential business. They have continued daily operations providing economical sustainability and access for local communities. In the City of Pacifica, six companies have been issued dispensary licenses for marijuana. Only a few of them are currently operating, including The Phog Center, Lytt and Seaweed Holistics. Plantwell Trading Company, open to the public, is a general retailer of Hemp and CBD

products and does not require a dispensary license to operate. The Cannabis Wellness Center is a non-profit organization that provides education, awareness and accessibility of resources for individuals new and old to the industry. There are also a variety of delivery companies that provide service to local residents, as well. In these uncertain and unprecedented times, please shop locally and do what you can to support these local establishments. Supporting our local businesses is essential to keeping money within our city where it is needed most. Online purchasing may be the new norm, but does not always provide the certainty of product quality.

Recreation Pacifica offers a wealth of outdoor activities to suit all ages and a wide range of interests. Enjoy the beautiful scenery Pacifica has to offer.

Surfing

The break there is usually fairly forgiving, and, on a nice weekend, the beach can attract a fair number of novice surfers. However, Linda Mar can also produce a fun and challenging wave with a bigger swell for the more seasoned surfer. The outer peaks tend to be the best shaped and often produce the longest rides. The Longboard and Fun Shape are the best boards to use. Rockaway Beach and Sharp Park Beach are not for the beginner surfer. These two beaches are considered advanced surfing beaches due to their strong rips and big swells. Pacifica has surf shops on Crespi Drive and Pedro Point, where the surfer can find wetsuits, surfboard rentals and surfing lessons.

Swimming

from 3 feet to 12 feet. Pool temperature is maintained at 82 degrees Fahrenheit. Dressing rooms include lockers; however, participants must provide their own locks and towels. Also offering: Water aerobics classes, swim lessons for all ages, pool parties, water polo, recreation swim and ARC Life guarding.

Pacifica is home to some of the Bay Area’s best surfing beaches. Linda Mar State Beach (Pacifica State Beach) is now known as the most popular beach for surfing in Northern California. Linda Mar features some of the best spots for beginner surfing and stand-up paddle boarding (SUP) in the San Francisco area. Linda Mar is a mile-long stretch of beach just north of Pedro Point. It’s very picturesque and somewhat protected from the wind.

The Jean E. Brink Pool is a 10lane, 25-yard indoor pool open yearround. The Parks, Beaches and Recreation Department is the primary user of the pool and offers a wide array of aquatic programs for participants. The pool boasts 1-meter and 3-meter diving boards. Depth ranges

Fishing and Crabbing

During a five-week period (from the last week of June into the first week of August), some of the best fishing in the United States can be had in the waters off Pacifica. The rocky coast is made up of a series of small bays where salmon are the most sought-after catch. A dramatic example of the abundance of salmon occurred in July 1995 when 300 salmon were

caught within a few hours on one day, 600 the next day and more than 1,000 the following day. This amazing phenomenon continued for five days, attracting hordes of anglers, who crowded the 1,140foot Pacifica Pier. The salmon run continued in peaks and valleys through that August. In addition to the salmon, striped bass often frequent the surf along with kingfish, sharks and perch. Although rare, sturgeon, barracuda and bonito have also been caught — even a 60-pound white sea bass was landed. Pacifica Pier offers the only pier in the Bay Area where you can crab for free. During the winter, Dungeness Crab, which are not available elsewhere in the Bay Area, are abundant off the pier. In the spring, catch perch at Linda Mar Bay; in the fall, go rock fishing off Pedro Point. Unfortunately, there are no public boat ramps in Pacifica. Some hardy souls handlaunch small boats through the surf at the southern end of Linda Mar Bay; however, take extreme caution if you decide to launch that way. Pacifica has bait-and-tackle shops located on Francisco Blvd. and Palmetto Ave. The Pacifica Pier is in Sharp Park with access two blocks west of the Pacific Coast Highway. Housed at the street end of the pier is the Chit Chat Cafe.

Scuba Diving and Spear Fishing

Linda Mar Beach is an intermediate-to-advanced beach entry scuba-dive site where you can encounter diverse aquatic life, such as seals, fish and rays. In May and June, halibut come into Linda Mar Bay and you will see many divers go for this prize fish. At Pedro Point, two wrecks lie on the ocean’s bottom in approximately 30 to 40 feet of water. In 1906, the Drumburton, a 266-foot, fourmast sail cargo ship hit the rocks at Pedro Point due to thick fog and high waves. Just four years later, in August 1910, the James Rolph, a 169-foot, four-mast schooner cargo ship was swept by the current into the rocks and went down at the same spot as the Drumburton. Remnants of these two ships still remain on the ocean floor; however, the swim to the location and back makes this a difficult dive. Conditions can be unpredictable and it is best to dive the southern part of Linda Mar Beach during calm, flat conditions. Visibility averages 5 – 20 feet most of the year, with 40-foot visibility on a great day. Water temperatures average in the mid-50° F, year-round, so a full 7 – 8 millimeter wetsuit with hood, boots and gloves is needed to ensure a warm and safe dive.

Recreation Biking

Pacifica is known in the bike community for its network of trails that overlook the Pacific Ocean. Whether pedaling your road bike or mountain biking, Pacifica has it all! From leisurely rides along the paved coastal trail or ascending the flanks of Montara Mountain, towering 2000 ft. above Pacifica, you’ll find something fun for all skill levels when pedaling in Pacifica. Old San Pedro road in the Linda Mar district, once the lifeline between Pacifica and all points south, is a great way to explore the Pacific Coast above Devil’s Slide and beyond. This formerly paved route (old pieces of asphalt can be seen along the entire length of road!) serves as the gateway to some of the BEST mountain bike riding in San Mateo County. The decommissioned road has a maximum 6% grade. Another cardio testing route finds one

pedaling past the Nike Missile Control site on the Mori Ridge trail above Shelldance Nursery in Pacifica’s Fairway district. The Mori Ridge trail mirrors the route that Gaspar de Portola took by pedaling up and around Sweeney Ridge to the Discovery site. A humble plaque sits atop the ridge showing where the Portola expedition first caught sight of the inland bay eventually to be known as San Francisco Bay.

Beaches Sharp Park Beach

Sharp Park Beach is the location of the famous Pacifica Pier — the only Pier in the Bay Area open for crabbing during Dungeness Crab season. After visiting the pier, continue south along Sharp Park Beach, watch the shorebirds, and then go up the trail leading to the top of the Mori Point, where you can enjoy spectacular ocean views as well as a broad vista of the Alister MacKenzie – designed Sharp Park Golf Course, beaches to the north and the Marin Headlands more than 30 miles away. • Site of the Pacifica Pier Picnic facilities, café, fishing, walking promenade, vista point parking and nature trails. Located off HWY 1 at Montecito Ave

Mussel Rock Beach

Mussel Rock Beach offers a stunning vista across the sea cliffs to the Pacific. It is a striking configuration of one large rock and numerous smaller ones. Known as a “stack,” this formation occurs where a headland is eroded unevenly, leaving small islands. A rocky path leads from the parking area to an easy descent to the water where visitors can watch paragliders sail across the sky. The area is also home to raptors, which enjoy the currents and thermals as much as the human gliders. In the spring, gorgeous wildflowers are a colorful backdrop to ocean views. Spectacular Trails Pacifica serves as a “backyard” for our neighbors who live and work in the Bay Area. They come here to surf, hike, walk the dog, go for a run or bring their kids to explore nature and get a taste of history.

Golden Gate National Recreation Area

The Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) chronicles 200 years of history — from the Native American culture; the Spanish Empire frontier; and the Mexican Republic; to maritime history; the California Gold Rush; the evolution of American coastal fortifications and the growth of urban San Francisco. One of the world’s largest urban national parks, GGNRA hugs the California coastline for nearly 60 miles in and around San Francisco. The park

Mori Point

For nearly a century, Mori Point served as a haven for settlers, travelers, bootleggers and diners. Today, this spectacular place serves as a haven for walkers and wildlife. A recent addition to the GGNRA, Mori Point property is considered the natural coastal extension of the National Park’s Sweeney Ridge property located due east across the Pacific Coast Highway (HWY 1). From the coastal bluff top of Mori Point, visitors will marvel at the dramatic coastline, stretching north beyond Pacifica to the Marin Headlands and on a clear day, to Point Reyes. To the south, one is surprised and entranced by the sudden view of the beautiful but inaccessible hidden cove and

beyond to the Rockaway and Pedro Point Headlands. Also visible to the north is the Pacifica Pier, Sharp Park Beach and the earthen berm supporting the coastal trail and separating the beach from the Laguna Salada freshwater marsh and the Sharp Park Golf Course. Benches are available for sitting and enjoying the vista. The top of the point is a great whale-watching location and sunsets from Mori Point are spectacular.

Sweeney Ridge

From this ridge top, in 1769, a scouting party led by Gaspar de Portolá became the first Europeans to see San Francisco Bay. A monument marks the approximate location of this landmark discovery. Sweeney Ridge is federally protected. It is a captivating hiking area of ridges and ravines between San Bruno and Pacifica where steep and rolling coastal hills overlook the San Francisco Peninsula, San Andreas Lake, and the Pacific Ocean. The ridge’s 1,200-foothigh summit, covered with coastal scrub and grassland, slopes down to the bay on one side and to the Pacific on the other. Wildlife includes hawks, deer and a plethora of spring wildflowers. On a clear day, you will see the City of Pacifica and the shimmering Pacific Ocean and coastline. Mt. Diablo, Montara Mountain and San Pedro Point. Pacifica celebrated the 250th anniversary of the Spanish expedition (1769-2019) in search of Monterey Bay. This led to the accidental sighting of the San Francisco Bay from atop Sweeney Ridge. This was an opportunity to tell the story of the expedition and of the Ramaytush Ohlone people who greeted the Spanish warmly. This sighting was the catalyst for the future develop-

ment of California. Directions: The driveway leading up to the trailhead, in the Shelldance Nursery parking lot, is a little obscure. When driving, look for large colorful signs declaring ORCHIDS on the east side of the Pacific Coast Highway (HWY 1). The reservation was finally closed in 1972 and portions transferred to the City of Pacifica in 1974. The hiking is mostly level and mostly paved. Directions: Follow Sharp Park Road to the East, turn North on College Drive and continue a quarter mile to roadside parking at the Milagra Ridge gate.

Milagra Ridge’s coastal scrub-covered ridgeline runs east to west, offering impressive views of the City of Pacifica, the ocean and the coastline. This protected ridge is the focus of community efforts to restore the wildlife habitat and help ensure the survival of a number of rare and endangered species found within this national parkland. The ridge is a critical habitat for the endangered Mission blue butterfly and home to redtailed hawks, often seen spiraling overhead. The 330-acre Milagra Ridge Military Reservation (1942 – 1972) was acquired in 1942 during World War II for use as a coastal defense installation. Two coastal batteries were planned: Battery 244 was started in 1942 but not completed until after the war in 1947; Battery 130

For more than twenty years, Sanchez Art Center has been a hub for artistic engagement on San Mateo County’s north coast. A comfortable and welcoming place for the community to gather, connect and be enriched by the arts, Sanchez Art Center is a visual arts organization with a mission of Creating Community through Art. Historic Landmarks

Over the years, numerous citizens have worked together to preserve our heritage and create the many facilities we are proud to enjoy today. Pacifica offers an abundance of natural beauty. Our history is enriched by Spanish explorers, Mexican ranchers, and early Irish and Italian farmers. These groups embraced what a treasure our waterfront had to offer and continues to be enjoyed by the current population of nature and culture loving Pacificans.

Sanchez Adobe

The Sanchez Adobe was constructed in the 1840s using timbers salvaged from a wrecked Spanish ship that foundered on Point San Pedro. The Adobe is a lovely example of the authentic Monterey architecture, heavily influenced by Spanish design, coupled with relics of the Ohlone Indians and Spanish artifacts. During its first 100 years, the Adobe served as a bordello, hunting lodge, artichoke packing shed, farm laborers’ quarters and a speakeasy during prohibition. It is the second oldest structure still standing in San Mateo County. The site now stands as a reminder of the more spacious and leisurely life of the past.

Free admission for kids 6 years and younger - $1 suggested donation. Open to the Public Tues - Thur: 10am - 4pm Sat & Sun: 1pm - 5pm 1000 Linda Mar Blvd Pacifica, CA (650) 359-1462 sanchezadobe@historysmc.org

Little Brown Church

Built of rough sawn fir and coastal redwood in 1910 as the first Presbyterian meeting house on the Coastside, the Little Brown Church was only 100 feet from the Ocean Shore Railroad. For 73 years it served as church, community center, meeting room, public school, well-baby clinic and neighborhood movie house. It then became the City of Pacifica police headquarters for 20 years. Leased after that by the Pacifica Historical Society, the site is now the Pacifica Coastside Museum. A $500,000 project made possible by the combined generosity of many local individuals, businesses, nonprofit organizations and schools, it is now a resource and information center for visitors as well as Pacifica and Coastside residents.

Sam’s Castle

Built in 1908 by San Francisco’s rail magnate Henry Harrison McCloskey, grandfather of Congressman Pete McCloskey, the castle is modeled after his wife Emily’s childhood home in Scotland. It was therefore christened “Bendemier.” McCloskey erected the castle by the sea as a safe haven after his San Francisco home was severely damaged in the 1906 earthquake. With its century-long reputation as a speakeasy, an illegal abortion

Historic Landmarks clinic, a brothel and Coast Guard barracks during World War II, the castle was purchased and restored in 1959 by the late Sam Mazza. Mazza filled it with wondrous works of arts and antiques collected during his career as a theater painter - decorator for 20th Century Fox. Sam’s Castle is now headquarters for the Sam Mazza Foundation, a philanthropic non-profit that supports the arts and youth arts education. Ongoing renovations preserve Mazza Castle as a beacon in the non-profit community and as an important part of Pacifica’s history. Sam’s Castle is open for monthly public tours, Holiday teas in May and December and the Mazza Castle Music Salons.

Ocean Shore Railroad

The Ocean Shore Railroad Company was established in 1905. The railroad started in San Francisco and ran along a coastal route through small villages that later became Pacifica. It hugged the mountain at Devil’s Slide and traveled south through Montara, Moss Beach, El Granada and Half Moon Bay. The route ended at Tunitas Creek, south of Half Moon Bay. Most of the Ocean Shore rightof-way was paved over and turned into the Pacific Coast Highway, reputed to be the most spectacular

Pacifica Pier

The L-shaped, 1,140 foot-long Pier is officially named the Reverend Herschell Harkins Memorial Pacifica Pier, after the much admired reverend from the Little Brown Church in the early days of Pacifica. Located at Sharp Park Beach, Pacifica Municipal Pier was opened in November 1973. The Pier was built as a cooperative development of the City of Pacifica, the Wildlife Conservation Board and the California Department of Fish & Game. The Pier, famous for its salmon runs and winter Dungeness crabbing, attracts many anglers. During salmon runs, hundreds of salmon are caught in a single day, and every available space on the Pier is taken by hundreds of anglers, fishing shoulder to shoulder. Primary species caught at the pier include white croaker, jacksmelt, Dungeness Crab, salmon and striped bass. The Pier is also a good place for whale viewing during their biannual migration.

Chamber Member Benefits Why Join the Pacifica Chamber of Commerce? Let’s start with the numbers. A study commissioned by the American Chamber of Commerce Executives with support from Small Business Network Inc. quantified the real value of chamber membership to companies in terms of impact and consumer confidence. The study’s objective was to determine this: “Do consumers really support businesses because they are chamber members?” Here’s what they found: • 59 percent of consumers think that being active in the local chamber .is an effective business strategy overall. • Consumers are 12 percent more likely to think a company’s products stack up better against its competition if the company is highly involved in the local chamber. • 44 percent of consumers are more likely to think favorably of a small .business when they know the company is a member of the chamber .of commerce and are 63 percent more likely to purchase goods or .services from the company in the future. • Why? If a company is highly involved in the local chamber, a con.sumer infers that the company is trustworthy, involved in the community, and is an industry leader. The Pacifica Chamber of Commerce has been committed to serving small to large businesses by promoting, networking, and advocating on behalf of businesses. We have a Chamber Board member on the City of Pacifica Economic Development Committee. On the following pages are a listing of current benefits available to our valued members who support our membership-driven organization. 52 • Pacifica Visitor Guide & Business Directory

Starting a Business in Pacifica 9 Step How-To Guide 1 WRITE A BUSINESS PLAN The U.S Small Business Association offers tools and resources for creating a business plan. These are especially useful for understanding market analysis, financing, sales, and marketing. www.sba.gov/business-guide/ plan-your-business/write-yourbusiness-plan

2 CHOOSE A BUSINESS STRUCTURE You can find an overview of information about the types of legal business structures at the California Secretary of State’s webpage. You may wish to consult with an attorney or lawyer to determine the legal business entity that is appropriate for your business. www.sos.ca.gov/business

3 FILE A FICTITIOUS BUSINESS NAME/OBTAIN AN EMPLOYER IDENTIFICATION NUMBER Applicants are advised to file the Fictitious Name Statement, if applicable, with the County of San Mateo’s County Clerk’s Office located at: 401 Marshall Street, 6th Floor, Redwood City, CA 94063 (650) 363-4500 www.smcacre.org/fictitiousbusiness-names An Employer Identification Number (EIN) is also known as a Federal Tax Identification Number, and is used to identify a business entity. 4 DETERMINE YOUR TARGET LOCATIONS/MARKET AREAS, CHECK FOR AVAILABLE LEASE SPACE, AND CHECK ZONING AND BUILDING CODE REGULATIONS PRIOR TO SIGNING A LEASE Before signing a lease, check with the Planning Department to determine whether or not your proposed business location complies with zoning and building requirements. The Planning Department does not have information regarding vacant or available lease space so come prepared with a location(s) that could be a possibility for your business. Improvements to commercial space requires licensed professionals to prepare permit plans. Make sure the design and construction team you hire is appropriately licensed. Hire your team early so that they can provide advice on improvements that may be needed and associated costs.

5 CHECK UTILITY REQUIREMENTS Your business may need upgraded electrical systems, new infrastructure such as grease traps or HVAC systems, upsized water lines for fire suppression system, sewer studies, etc. Your licensed contractor and design team can assist with an assessment. If you need to upgrade electrical systems, it is recommended you get in touch with PG&E prior to signing any leases or building permits. It can take many months (6 -9 months) for PG&E to begin and complete a project. www.pacificachamber.com • 65

6 NEGOTIATE A LEASE Understand insurance and bonding requirements your landlord will require from your design and construction team. Best practice dictates that business owners & landlords make lease arrangements that recognize it takes time to have all permits and licenses in place. Different businesses require different licenses across multiple agencies. You may also consider discussing the expected cost of improvements with the landlord as those will stay with the property. If your landlord is asking you to sign a lease prior to having all permits in place, be prepared as permits and licenses often experience delays across one or multiple jurisdictions.

7 OBTAIN NECESSARY PERMITS & INSPECTIONS Apply for all required Planning entitlement and building permits as discussed with the Planning Department under Step 4. It is recommended that applicants also check with other County, State, and Federal Agencies to see if there are any other permits or inspections necessary for a business to open.

8 APPLY FOR A BUSINESS LICENSE Business licenses are issued through the Finance Department at Pacifica City Hall located at 170 Santa Maria Ave. on the first floor. All business licenses expire October 31st, and must be renewed annually. A new license is needed for changes in business location. If there is more than one business location or business operation at a single location, separate applications must be filed. Each applicant must: • Complete the Business License application form • Pay the requisition fee • Pass mandatory inspections Once a business license has been submitted to the Finance Department, the document will pass through several internal City departments that will determine necessary permits and inspections that the business must have before it can obtain a business license. Most business license applications take three weeks to complete. Once the business license application has gone through all the necessary departments, Finance will mail the business license to the applicant. Business license applications can be found online on the Finance Department’s page. www.cityofpacifica.org/depts/ finance/business_license_documents.asp

Earthquake Preparedness Checklist ✓ ✓ ✓

The following checklist covers some basic points to consider in preparing for an earthquake, which will help you recover more effectively in the aftermath. In the event of an earthquake, these steps will prove vital in minimizing any damage to your business and resources.

Before the Earthquake Be aware of your risk level. Add a map to your Preparedness Plan and make sure everyone is aware of the earthquake risk level in your region. Think about communications, since the phone company and cell towers may go down. Your disaster recovery/response team will need to be in immediate contact with one another to ensure that your plan is activated and moving forward as quickly as possible. Think about two-way radios or text messages. SMC ALERT is the San Mateo County alert notification system used to immediately contact you during urgent or emergency situations. You can set alerts to send emergency and non-emergency text and voice messages to your: email accounts, cell phones, smartphones, tablets, voice messages to landline phones (home & work) smcsheriff.com/smcalert. Develop a plan around communication and deliver this to your team. Be sure to clearly identify each individual’s roles and responsibility prior to the earthquake. Implement structural and non-structural hazard mitigation actions: bolting furniture to walls. Discuss coverage with your insurance provider. Understand your extra expense and business interruption policies before the interruption occurs. Contact your property owner or facilities manager and ask about having a laminate or plastic film placed on the inside of the windows to prevent glass shattering and endangering employees. Assemble and store emergency supply kit for 3 days minimum (see checklist for emergency supply kit at www.PrepareMyBusiness.org). Assemble building site maps and floor plans identifying exits, fire escapes, stairways, utility valves and shutoffs, fire extinguishers, hydrants, and stand-pipes, hazardous materials, and locked or restricted areas. Include these in your plan. Prepare your building for an extensive power outage and look at power options, particularly generator requirements. Review your current data backup procedures and consider contracting with a data center. Back up all your data to them on a daily (or at least every other day) basis, so that in the event you lose your networks and servers you can be back up and running and restoring your saved data to replacement equipment. Practice the ‘During the Earthquake’ items (to the right) regularly with new and existing employees.

During the Earthquake If you are indoors, duck or drop down to the floor. Take cover under a sturdy desk, table or other furniture. Hold on to it and be prepared to move with it. Hold the position until the ground stops shaking and it is safe to move. Stay clear of windows, fireplaces, wood stoves, and heavy furniture or appliances that may fall over. Stay inside to avoid being injured by falling glass or building parts. If you are in a crowded area, take cover where you are. Stay calm and encourage others to do likewise. If you are outside, get into the open, away from buildings and power lines. If you are driving, stop if it is safe, but stay inside your car. Stay away from bridges, overpasses and tunnels. Move your car as far out of the normal traffic pattern as possible. If possible, avoid stopping under trees, light posts, power lines, or signs. If you are in a mountainous area, or near unstable slopes or cliffs, be alert for falling rock and other debris that could be loosened by the earthquake. If you are at the beach, move quickly to higher ground or several hundred yards inland.

After the Earthquake Employees should immediately check for injuries among fellow workers and render first aid. Check for fire hazards, gas leaks, or damaged electrical wiring. Make sure main valves are turned off. Use flashlights (in emergency supply kit) vs. matches / lighters, due to potential gas leaks. Be prepared for aftershocks – these can come for several days after the main quake and can frequently topple already weakened structures. Consider relocation during recovery, depending upon damage to structure. Bring all vital records with you to your recovery site: data, employee lists, etc.

Your People Ensure you have an emergency communication plan in place prior to the earthquake and that employees are aware of their part in the plan. Determine who is certified in CERT, CPR, etc. and what their responsibilities are. Use an Alert Notification System or internal employee hotline to keep all employees posted on status and next steps. During evacuation have a central point of contact for all employees, and ensure you know where your people are located. During evacuation consider your phones lines-redirection to cell phones, answering service, Google Voice, or Agility lines could be critical. Following the earthquake, notify all critical people of next steps, based on damage.
