Arizona State University continues to earn national recognition as a top university for graduate employability, inspiring master learners prepared with the knowledge and skills necessary to excel and achieve in today’s changing workplace. ASU is where students and faculty work with NASA to develop, advance and lead innovations in space exploration. This is where Nobel laureates and Pulitzer Prize winners teach tomorrow’s leaders. A transformative presence on the West Coast, the ASU California Center in Santa Monica advances pioneering research, strategic partnerships, entrepreneurship and economic development.
We recognize that the Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce is at the center of everything Santa Monica. Historically Chambers have been the ambassadors to their respective cities welcoming all who enter hoping to find success and fulfilling lives. Chambers must be the conduit for essential resources and providing a warm welcome. With that in mind, we’ve redesigned our guide to ensure that we continue to be the go-to resource for the City’s business community and anyone who makes Santa Monica their home.
After many requests, this year’s guide includes relocation information for people moving into Santa Monica to do business or live here. The guide also contains data about who we are as a community, as well as information about the City of Santa Monica – the people and the processes that shape how we live and where we work.
We belong to a community that can proudly identify several world class industries, including Health Care, Education, Sustainability and Green Practices, and a healthy Tourism industry where people arrive from all over the world excited to shop, eat and play in our fair city.
Being a world class city, it is important for the Chamber to represent the diverse needs of our membership. We advocate and represent our members’ business interests and issues facing the community. We provide the environment to help our members prosper and succeed with a proactive working partnership with all levels of government and community organizations and achieve a healthy, local economy and quality of life.
The SMCC is one of the largest chambers in the Southern California region. We have more than 1200 members
representing thousands of employees who live and work in this community. We offer businesses a strong local platform to tap into the power of an established community of business owners and entrepreneurs.
This is a very active Chamber –we produce more than 65 events and programs annually, as well as have 13 active standing committees who focus on goals and objectives that are important to our members, from the automotive industry to the hospitality business, to environmental sustainability.
For example, through the SMCC’s Foundation, we allocate much needed funds to our local students to foster workforce development. We have a scholarship program and an annual career day in partnership with the City of Santa Monica and SAMO High that both ensure that the program comes to life and our young future leader’s dreams can be realized. We love Santa Monica. We support Santa Monica. We’ve done so since 1925. And we’ll continue to embrace all that we do in our beautiful city by the sea.
Thank you, Yesenia Monsour of Kaiser Permanente, for your outstanding leadership in 2016 as our Board Chair. We welcome West Hooker, longtime owner of Locanda Del Lago restaurant as our 2017 Board Chair. We look forward to working with all of you for another productive, and prosperous year.

THE PERFECT PLACE TO LIVE, WORK, AND PLAY!
BY MELISSA MILLER YOUNGIf you want the best of both worlds, you’ll find it in Santa Monica. The city is a walkable 8.3 square miles and boasts the perfect mix of world-class urban living and laid back California beach town charm. Location is everything, and the city is only eight miles north of Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and 13 miles from the heart of Downtown Los Angeles, but feels worlds away from the hustle and bustle.
While Santa Monica may be known for the world-famous Pier and its breathtaking 3.5-miles stretch of coastline. there is much more to the city. Santa Monica is also:
SUSTAINABLE
An internationally recognized, award-winning sustainability leader, Santa Monica was among the first in the country to adopt a Sustainability City Program.
CREATIVE
Santa Monica is leading the charge when it comes to the nation’s creative economy, and has one of the highest concentrations of creative individuals in the country with nearly half of the adult population making all or part of their living in arts-related fields.
INNOVATIVE
Creativity and innovation go hand in hand, and in order to help businesses compete globally, the city officials created Santa Monica City Net, a cutting-edge package of network solutions. Santa Monica College is also pitching in and training a highly-skilled future workforce for green industries, med-
ical services and entertainment technology. Global and Local City – Many businesses in Santa Monica are linked to the global economy, however, residents place strong value in supporting local, independent and sustainable businesses. The city’s Buy Local Santa Monica campaign, with 900 participating businesses, further encourages local shopping, reduces travel, and increases local tax revenue.
LIVEABLE
Santa Monica offers residents a quality of life like no other – the beach, culture, bike routes, walkability, education, top-notch services, world-class farmers markets and amazing weather.
LIVE
Beyond the beach, Santa Monica is the perfect place to call home, and has eight distinctly different neighborhoods, each with its own personality. Downtown Santa Monica, with the Third Street Promenade and Santa Monica Place, is a vibrant neighborhood where there’s always something going on. From live street performers to a twice-weekly farmers’ market and numerous shops, restaurants, and hotels, the downtown area is always a great place to be.
Santa Monica’s Main Street/Ocean Park area is where you can find the laid back, artsy vibe the Southern California coast is famous for. With a weekly farmers’ market, a variety of different boutiques and shops, international restaurants and the highest concentration of coffee shops in the city, it’s a great neighborhood with something for everyone. Mid-City/Bergamot Area is the furthest inland neighborhood in Santa Monica and is the area’s arts and entertainment hub. Sunset Park carries the local, artsy feel up along Ocean Park Boulevard, from Main Street to the southeastern city boundaries, and is home to a number of coffee shops, boutique stores, and neighborhood-serving amenities. The Santa Monica Airport is located in the Sunset Park neighborhood and the Museum of Flying at the airport houses
a collection of historic aircraft Parallel to I-10 is Pico, a rich, multi-cultural area that has some great dining options, parks, a weekly farmers market, live music venues and grocery stores.
The Santa Monica Pier area and the palm tree lined Ocean Avenue is one of the most iconic locations in Santa Monica. With views overlooking the Pacific Ocean, unique hotels, and a number of open-air restaurants and bars. And last but definitely not least, just north of Wilshire Boulevard is the Montana Avenue neighborhood that consists primarily of single-family homes, with a number of upscale boutiques, and renowned restaurants to charm locals and visitors alike.
HOUSING
As an area with high demand for somewhat limited housing, the median home value in Santa Monica is $1,422,600. Home values have gone up 5.7% over the past year and Zillow predicts they will rise 0.8% within the next year. The U.S. Census estimates of the 92,987 people who called Santa Monica home in 2015, 27.4% of them owned a home. Options aren’t limited to houses, though, as 77% of available housing units in the city are in multi-unit structures – i.e. apartment buildings, condominiums, and duplexes – as compared to the California average of only 31%.
EDUCATION
Santa Monica is also a great place to raise a family and the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District, headquartered in Santa Monica, serves the diverse coastal communities of Santa Monica and Malibu. The district serves 11,000 students in Transitional Kindergarten through 12th grade in 10 elementary schools, two middle schools, one middle / high school, one comprehensive high school, a continuation high school and a K - 8th grade alternative school. The district is also home to 11 early childhood education centers and an adult school. U.S. News and World Report has named Santa Monica High School a Top High School in the nation and state, and the school boasts a graduation rate of about 95%, with the majority of students moving forward with post-secondary education options. Many students graduate and move on to Santa Monica College, a two-year community college offering a number of undergraduate programs.
TACKLING TRAFFIC AND GOING GREEN
When it comes to getting stuck in traffic, there’s no place quite like Los Angeles. Idling in traffic on the way to and from work is common. According to Inrix, a transportation analytics firm, drivers spent 104 hours driving in congestion last year. The greater Los Angeles area has four of the world’s mostcongested freeway segments, and according to a recent Los Angeles Times poll, traffic remains the top concern for Southern California residents – topping personal safety, housing costs and retirement savings.
The City of Santa Monica is not taking the traffic problem lightly and has worked on a number of public infrastructure enhancements to provide new and expanded choices for residents and visitors. Currently there are several transportation options that offer sustainable vehicle trip alternatives while reducing congestion and greenhouse gas emissions, improving mobility, community health, and the overall quality of life in Santa Monica.
3 BIG BLUE BUS R The city’s local bus service, Big Blue Bus, has been in operation since 1928, and serves upwards of 20 million passengers per year, offering a variety of route types and services.
4 CAR FREE FRIDAY R Santa Monica residents, workers, and businesses kicked-off #CarFreeFriday last year by giving their cars a day off and using car-free ways to get to work, school, or happy hour. The city provides incentives, tips, and support for residents to walk, bike, skate, or take transit once a week, making it easy and safe to make the shift to being car-free and carefree more often.
5 SCRAMBLE CROSSWALKS R Santa Monica has always been pedestrian friendly, and last year launched scramble crosswalks, which allows pedestrians to cross the intersection in any direction during the walk phase, increasing the efficiency of pedestrian traffic.
6 ZIPCAR R The City of Santa Monica and Zipcar have partnered to expand car sharing in Santa Monica. This provides users with access to a vehicle for times when they need it, available by the hour and by the day.
ELECTRIC VEHICLES R A number of EV Charging stations have been installed in Santa Monica and electric or clean air vehicles with white and green Clean Air Vehicle decals may park free of charge at city on-street parking meters.
With transit options to fit your lifestyle, the City of Santa Monica also wants to help you travel smart, and GoSaMo makes it easy for everyone to APP, MAP, and TAP their way around Santa Monica with the best resources available. To move beyond the car next time you’re in Santa Monica, go to www.smgov.net/strategic-goals/mobility.

SUSTAINABILITY
EYES ON THE PRIZE
SANTA MONICA FINDS ITSELF AT THE FOREFRONT WORKING FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE.
BY JIM FARBERIt’s one of those exquisite balmy evenings on the Santa Monica Pier—that transcendental hour when the sun sets golden into the Bay and the shadows of night gradually descend. People are standing at the water’s edge letting the surf lap at their toes as the clouds turn pink and a V-formation of pelicans sweep low over the water. With the coming of night the Pier lights come and spokes of radiating color illuminate the graceful revolutions of the Ferris Wheel. Lights have also come on inside the historic carousel where prancing horses, to the delight of their young riders, go round and round and round. Restaurants are serving funnel cakes, margaritas, burgers, pasta and oyster bowls. The arcade zone is bustling, fisherman are casting lines into the rolling waves, there is the clatter of the rollercoaster and a crazy-quilt of music that blends with conversations in English, Spanish, Chinese, German, Hebrew, Italian, Farsi, Korean, Russian and French all being spoken at once.
Everyone is having a wonderful time, unaware of how many city initiatives have gone into making their visit enjoyable and sustainable. According to Shannon Parry of the Santa Monica Office of Sustainability, that is exactly as it should be.
“A sunset at the Pier exemplifies Santa Monica’s sustainability efforts," Parry says. The Ferris Wheel is the first in the world to be totally solar powered. The lighting system has been converted to LEDs which provide brighter light and save on energy costs. Local restaurants, like The Albright, a 2017 Sustainable Quality Award winning business, are serving sustainably harvested seafood. Many of the folks enjoying the Pier arrived on the new Expo Line or took our Big Blue Bus which runs on landfill derived natural gas. If you’re here for one of our summertime Twilight Concerts, you’ll see our free Bike Valet that encourage people to leave their cars at home. ”

SILICON BEACH
Silicon Beach is Southern California’s version of Silicon Valley, and Santa Monica is right in the middle of it all with a number of innovative tech companies.
Santa Monica has a history of being home to innovators, creators and disruptors. The tech sector is large and diverse, reaching across many industries, with creative industries and technology accounting for 28% of the city’s total employment. Spanning 2,676 businesses, with a total annual payroll of $2.9 billion, the sector continues to grow and consists of information, professional, scientific and technical services.
What makes Silicon Beach distinct is the confluence of high-tech and the entertainment industry, and the applications for tech in Santa Monica span industries as diverse as film production and editing, to app development and software. Some of the major players in the tech scene include Activision Blizzard, Agensys, Cooley, Cornerstone On-Demand, Edmunds.com, Hulu, Kite Pharma, Lions Gate Entertainment, Miramax Films, TrueCar, Twitter, Uber, and Universal Music Group.
Technology is the single most important ingredient for building and nurturing a thriving, prosperous, and growing economy and a number of accelerators and incubators in Santa Monica illustrate the depth of technology talent within the community. From media to engineering, software to consumer goods, these accelerators are looking for the next best thing.
To keep the spirit of innovation front and center, the Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce, the City of Santa Monica, and a number of community partners came together in 2015 to form {Hack the Beach}. {Hack the Beach} is a partnership that brings together Santa Monica’s brightest minds to explore how technology can make the city an even better place – especially in the areas of community, mobility, and civic engagement. See page 00 to learn more about the program.
Things are changing every day and in Santa Monica, ideas are being discovered, created, developed, and refined, making the city a better place for visitors and residents alike.
*According to the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC)
Sustainability in its three manifestations: Environmental, Social and Economic is a guiding principal for the city of Santa Monica. It’s a policy that is designed to enhance the lives of Santa Monica’s residents, businesses and visitors.

“It wasn’t always like this,” says Dean Kubani, Santa Monica’s Chief Sustainability Officer. “In the 1980s the Santa Monica Bay was in such bad shape it was declared a Super Fund Site by the Environmental Protection Agency. There was pollution and a lot of water quality issues that were affecting swimmers and the wildlife. People realized our beautiful beachside environment was in danger. So a group of local environmentalists came together and formed Heal the Bay. That was the beginning.
But it was in 1994, as a reaction to the Rio Convention on ecology and climate
change, that the sustainability movement in Santa Monica took hold,” Kubani explains. He was there from the start.
“In 1991 the Santa Monica City Council formed the Task Force on the Environment. That 7-member committee looked seriously at the city’s efforts up to that point. They saw some wins, but they also saw there were serious challenges. The result was the Sustainable City Plan.

368 sustainable landscape grants and rebates issued to residents and businesses resulting in annual estimated water savings of 5.9 million gallons since 2010
403 housing units have received LEED certification of silver or higher since 2010
“It set comprehensive community-wide goals for all areas of sustainability,” says Kubani, “from resource use and public health, to transportation, economic development and affordable housing. The Plan lead to the creation of codes mandating green construction practices; and the conversion of our city vehicles and buses to clean energy fuels. It was a turning point for Santa Monica, a time when people were realizing that ecological issues affected the standard of living and the economy.”
Since that time, Santa Monica has taken

“Sustainability,” says Dean Kubani, “is not a luxury. It is an imperative. Sustainability is crucial because we are facing global, environmental stresses that are real, and they’re not going away no matter what some people say. Santa Monica has developed a very strong socially and environmentally progressive ethic. We want a clean, healthy environment, a strong economy and we want social equity.”
“The Chamber’s approach to sustainability is emblematic of the forward-thinking concern for the future that is Santa Monica,” says Carl Hanson, the Chamber’s Director of Government Affairs. “Becoming sustainable plays directly into the Chamber’s interests, which are: Saving the Environment, making Santa Monica a great community to live and work in, and making Santa Monica a desirable place to do business.

EDUCATION
EDUCATION IS A TOP PRIORITY IN SANTA MONICA
Santa Monica has a history of being home to innovators and creators, and is a community where education matters. A quality education not only effects the future of children, it effects the future of their families, their friends, and their communities. Access to good schools is at the top of the list of priorities, not only for people that move to Santa Monica, but for the entire community.
The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District (SMMUSD) is where many local students get their start. Headquartered in Santa Monica, the district serves 11,000 students in both Santa Monica and Malibu and offers Transitional Kindergarten through 12th grade, 10 elementary schools, two middle schools, one middle / high school, one comprehensive high school, a continuation high school and a K - 8th grade alternative school. The district is also home to 11 early childhood education centers and
an adult school.
Parents have high expectations, and SMMUSD meets those with results. U.S. News and World Report has named both Santa Monica and Malibu High Schools as Top High Schools in the nation and state, and three schools have also been recognized as National Blue Ribbon Schools: Edison Language Academy, Will Rogers Learning Community and Lincoln Middle School. In addition, Lincoln Middle School earned the Gold School designation in
2015 and is one of nine schools recognized as a California Distinguished School. The others are: Franklin, McKinley, Roosevelt, Will Rogers, Webster and Point Dume elementary schools and Malibu and Santa Monica high schools.
The innovative thread that runs through Santa Monica is also evident, and SMMUSD participates in Project Lead the Way (PLTW), which is a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) -oriented curriculum. This provides transformative learning experiences for K-12 students and teachers with an engaging, hands-on classroom environment that empowers students to develop the in-demand knowledge and skills they need to thrive.
The innovative approach isn’t limited to STEM, according to Gail Pinkser, SMMUSD Community and Public Relations Officer, the district has also transformed STEM to STEAM with a strong emphasis on the arts.

“Students begin their visual and performing arts instruction in elementary school and access continues through high school, and we get a lot of national acclaim for that.”
SMMUSD boasts a graduation rate of about 95%, with the majority of students moving forward with post-secondary education options. Many students graduate and move on to Santa Monica College (SMC), a two-year community college offering a number of undergraduate programs.
Santa Monica College – accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges - continues to forge ahead as an institution that is first in class in exemplifying the community college mission. A thriving campus with approximately 32,000 students and offerings in more than 90 fields of study, SMC has maintained its “#1 in Transfer to UC’s, CSU’s and USC” reputation for more than 25 years. The college has a number of excellent programs to prepare students for careers of the 21st century – including nursing and health care, solar technology and other “green” careers, entertainment technology, computer technology, early childhood education, business, graphic design and numerous other occupations. SMC is also proud to
offer a four year Bachelors degree program in IXD (Interaction Design) at a fraction of the cost of other institutions.
Arizona State University’s California Center is also located in Santa Monica and provides a convenient gateway to the academic and research excellence that defines the University. The Center welcomes students, families, alumni and friends, offering nearby access to a diverse array of ASU programs and services. The Center also supports ASU's function as a dynamic venture catalyst and technology hub.
The Santa Monica Language Academy caters to the community’s rich diversity and offers language classes for adults and kids. The Academy offers students the opportunity to learn over 20 languages including Arabic, Armenian, ASL, Chinese, ESL (English as a Second Language), French, German, Hindi, Italian Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian or Spanish in a direct and fun way.
With 17 private schools, and options from pre-K to career, it’s easy to see the community’s focus on education, and the many different ways that students can achieve their educational goals and grow forward in Santa Monica.

Master Learners Make a Difference: ASU Produces Workforce of the Future
Arizona State University is delivering some of the nation’s top graduates, and its Santa Monica-based California Center is an example of what sets ASU students apart from the crowd. This multipurpose locale offers a staging point for internships, workshops and other experiential learning opportunities led by industry experts in an array of fields.
These types of career-building experiences under the guidance of exemplar faculty are among the reasons the Global University Employability Survey 2016 — informed by recruiters and managing directors — puts ASU in the Top 10 in the nation for graduate employability, ahead of MIT, Columbia, Johns Hopkins and Duke.
Known for broadening access to educational excellence, ASU trains students to think as problem solvers and situates them in a transdisciplinary environment that focuses on real-world skills that translate into marketable careers. Even as undergraduates,
students have research and mentoring opportunities with leading academics and access to the latest technology in world-class labs and learning spaces.
“We create future leaders, a workforce of ‘master learners’ adaptable and capable of learning anything, prepared so that they, their employers and their communities can thrive in the workplace of the future,” ASU President Michael M. Crow said.
ASU is a pipeline of top talent to more than 1,600 employers, with dozens of major corporations like Ford Motor Company, Vanguard and Mayo Clinic deeming it a leading recruiting destination.
ASU is the largest supplier of engineering graduates to Intel Corporation. Barbara Whye, Vice President of Human Resources and Executive Director of Strategy and External Alliances in Intel’s Global Diversity and Inclusion Office, said, “ASU is preparing the next generation of innovators — well equipped with the knowledge, skills and confidence to develop, scale and deliver bold ideas and breakthrough solutions, whether they are working as a key team member or an entrepreneurial leader navigating a large, complex organization.”
California companies that recruit at ASU include heavyweights like Google and Tesla. ASU is a top 20 university for landing a job in Silicon Valley, along with Stanford, UC Berkeley and UCLA.
Currently, more than 11,000 California residents are enrolled at ASU, with roughly 6,000 of those pursuing degrees through ASU Online. ASU has created transfer partnerships with more than 60 California community colleges and is California community college students’ top out-ofstate choice.
Along with serving students, the ASU California Center houses Arizona Technology Enterprises, a technology transfer and business startup effort linking ASU inventors, California entrepreneurs and research institutions; Zócalo Public Square, which convenes events and publishes humanities journalism in over 160 media outlets; the California Chicano News Media Association; and the Arizona Commerce Authority.
The center illustrates a strengthening relationship between ASU and California that benefits business, academia, local communities and entrepreneurial enterprises and plays a role in producing the workforce of the future.

NAVIGATING LEGAL ISSUES & PROTECTING YOUR BUSINESS
Hiring a business attorney is critical to starting and running a small business. You’ve analyzed your competition, studied your target customer, and received funding for your new business. Your accountant says you have a strong strategic plan for growth. Now it’s time to lease office space and hire employees – right?
Think again. The input of a valuable partner is missing - input that could mean the success or failure of a small business - input from a business attorney. True, retaining an attorney can be costly. Yet, not retaining an attorney can cost a business even more. Going it alone can result in missed opportunities, business interruptions, expensive liabilities and the potential for legal action. There are many legal issues that need to be addressed when running a business, it’s critical to have a lawyer who can anticipate every possible twist or turn and who knows how to react to each development.
Initially a business owner will need to determine if the company should be registered as a sole proprietorship, general partnership, LLC, LLP, or corporation. Laws governing these different business forms vary, especially in areas such as personal liability for business debts and business tax obligations.
Different business structures provide different protections and risk to the business owner. When a business is at risk, the owner may be personally liable thus jeopardizing everything s/he owns.
An attorney can help a business owner decide which type of corporate structure is best for his/her needs and type of business.
In the marketplace, a business is defined by its brand and the intellectual property that illustrates that brand. All are entitled to legal protection.
Intellectual property also includes proprietary designs, discoveries, inventions, processes, symbols, music and other private, business-related information. These assets are what provide a business with its competitive or economic advantage.
Trademark, copyright and patent registrations help a business protect those things that differentiate it among customers and clients.
A trademark legally registers words, names and symbols that identify the source of a product. Protection from plagiarism of original writing is provided by copyright registration. Patents give owners the right to keep others from making, using or offering an exclusive item for sale.
These safeguards offer important defense against theft. When intellectual property is copied or stolen, a company’s brand is compromised. An attorney can ensure a business owner never faces that issue.
Contracts are another minefield through which an attorney can show a path. Company owners will do business with many people: landlords, suppliers, service providers,
customers, independent contractors and their own employees. Many of these transactions will require written contracts.
Businesses lease many different types of facilities, from offices and warehouses to manufacturing and retail space. A lease is a binding agreement and dictates how and when the property may be used. An attorney will be able to tell if the agreement is appropriate for an owner’s business activities.
Sales contracts detail the terms of
a transaction including how and when payment is to be made. Companies that operate without formal sales and service contracts leave themselves open to disruptions in the flow of supplies, merchandise and essential services. An attorney will ensure the terms are beneficial for all parties.
Employment contracts can be particularly tricky. Legal protections, liabilities and relationships will vary depending on the working relationship.
An employee contract details the terms of employment including pay, benefits and full- or part-time status. The employee works for the business detailed in the contract. However, many businesses also hire independent contractors. Because an independent contractor is exactly that – independent and not an employee – the terms of an agreement will be quite different.
Other legal documents include an employee handbook, a confidentiality statement, and non-disclosure and non-compete agreements. A lawyer who knows small business will be able to review and negotiate beneficial contracts and employment materials.
The best time to hire an attorney is before one is needed. A good attorney will not be cheap, but neither will be the liabilities you face without one. You can find the name of a qualified professional in your Chamber directory. Make that call today!
