ENHANCING LIVES ONE BOTTLE AT A TIME It started with a simple idea: “let’s make it a family project.” The year was 1996 and Rosie and Gerry Wilson had just retired from their careers as cooking show host and financial planner respectively when one of their grown children suggested going into the wine business. After much discussion, and research, the Wilsons, along with three of their children with emerging families of their own, planted their dreams of a winery in the fertile soil of the Temecula Valley Wine Country. Today, the roots of the Wilson Family dream are alive and well in a wine-centered environment like no other in the Temecula Valley. The Wilson’s family project is now one of the most popular wine destinations in Southern California with more than 2,000 people visiting every week and more than 100,000+ cases of wine sold around the country each year. At the heart of this effort is the attention to family and hospitality. There is rarely a moment when a Wilson Family member is not on the property and Matriarch Rosie Wilson is often seen walking one of the family Golden Retrievers through the grounds greeting people and talking with guests. From the beginning, Wilson Creek has focused on developing wines that “communicate” with people. From its breakout Almond Sparkling Wine, and its ever-growing family of effervescent delights, to bold new age varietals, Wilson Creek wines continue to break new ground in vinicultural circles. Wilson Creek wines have won prestigious awards every year since 2002 including many rated 90+ by Wine Enthusiast. In a blind tasting for the

“People’s Choice Awards”, Wilson Creek’s Petite Sirah was deemed “Best Red Wine in the Temecula Valley.” The variety of wines at Wilson Creek is pared with a healthy dose of hospitality. As a destination winery, Wilson Creek is ideal for weddings, corporate and special events, and family celebrations. In addition to the daily events and tasting activities, the winery offers a full-service restaurant with an expansive patio, creekside picnic area, exclusive accommodations, and private labeled wines. The simple pleasure of enjoying wine goes to the heart of the mission at Wilson Creek with a goal to provide an atmosphere that creates a fun experience through connecting with people while enjoying a wide selection of wine. The Wilson family has built an extended-family community around the sharing of wine, food and hospitality, turning visitors into friends and wine lovers into ambassadors for the brand. www.WilsonCreekWinery.com

ABOUT TEMECULA VALLEY WINE COUNTRY Wine culture began in Temecula Valley back in 1968 when the first commercial vineyards were planted. Today, it’s an American Viticultural Area (AVA) characterized by rolling, Tuscan-like hills, and an ideal Mediterranean climate. Wine lovers can plan their visit

IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCES Hands-on with Cuisine, Wine & Art

Temecula Valley is one big learning lab if you know where to look. You can get your hands “dirty” being educated on the art and science of all things food, wine, and whiskey thanks to local makers who have a passion for sharing their craft. You can have fun and bring home a new skill when you sign up for one of these experiences. Become a winemaker for the day at BOTTAIA Winery. In a professional lab setting, you’ll be guided through a step-by-step process to taste four varietals of young, red wine taken straight from the barrel. Then, blend them into three separate red blends

18 V i s i t Te m e c u l a Va l l e y. c o m

according to your preference. Your favorite blend will be bottled, corked and capsuled for you to take home. At Galway Spirits’ Distillers Workshop their Master Distiller explains the distilling process, then you make your own bottle of spirits as a takeaway. Classes also include a tasting flight and a light lunch. Poggio Leano offers Italian cooking classes with Sicilian owner and chef, Alex Prestifilippo. Check their website for more information or visit our website events calendar to see what’s happening during your stay, VisitTemeculaValley. com/things-to-do/events.

around tasting at some of our nearly 50 boutique, rustic, and luxurious amenities-driven wineries. A winery map can be downloaded at VisitTemeculaValley. com/plan to explore on your own, or join fellow wine enthusiasts on a guided tour. Hand-crafted wines grown from the dozens of grape varieties, including well-known favorites like Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Chardonnay, as well as offbeat Mediterranean varieties like Sangiovese, Grenache, Tempranillo, and Vermentino are featured at the local wineries. Activities in Temecula Valley Wine Country include wine tasting, winery tours, dining, equestrian, hot air ballooning, bicycling, exotic animals, swimming and sunbathing, live music, and special events.

TAKING TEMECULA TO NEW WINE MAKING HEIGHTS The vineyards - Sustainable. Balanced. Pristine. Our vineyards are sustainably managed. We study the land, and work closely with it. We watch the climate, and respond carefully to it. We have chosen a natural approach to farming and to create wines that are naturally expressive. You’ll notice we’re drawn mostly to working with the age-old grape varieties of Spain, Portugal and southern France (although their lineage actually goes much farther back, into mankind’s earliest days). That is because these varieties naturally express themselves in our region with amazing power, elegance and grace. The winery - Beautiful. Tranquil. Serene. Our stunning hilltop location keeps Miramonte – literally and figuratively --- perched majestically above the fray of everyday life. Enjoy it as often as you can! Whether in person, online, or at any of our off site get-togethers, we look forward to seeing and sharing a glass with you. The weekend - The Original. Lively. Energetic. We established regular weekend entertainment in Temecula Valley Wine Country back in 2001. Since then, it’s emerged as a big part of our legacy. Weekly entertainment at Miramonte is a chance for us all to unwind, cut loose, and reconnect with family and friends in a casual, relaxed atmosphere.

The wines - Elegant. Trendsetting. Harmonious. We love great wine. Our goal is excellence in every glass. Our house style is one of elegance, concentration, depth of character and what we call “approachable intensity” inherently deep flavors and aromas, with elegant nuances derived from premium oak aging and gentle winemaking. The winemaker - Seasoned. Soulful. Innovative. Our winemaker is UC Davis-educated Reinhard Schlassa who brings a pedigree winemaking background to Miramonte. He’s made wines with icons of the industry on three continents over a span of three decades. His amazing experience and creative talent guide our every winemaking decision. The bistro - Rich. Delicious. Cali Casual. We launched the Bistro in 2015, and we pretty much never looked back. Several industry awards later, we’ve emerged as a benchmark in local Cali-casual cuisine. All our dishes are scratch-made on the daily by an amazing team dedicated to discovering a variety of rich flavors that reflect Southern California’s cultural diversity. We source local and organic whenever we can. Miramonte has gracefully emerged as one of Southern California’s most beautiful, dynamic, and forward thinking wineries. Ours is a mission driven by passion. By design, we are a leading influence in the Southern California wine scene, taking Temecula to new winemaking heights. We invite you to connect with us and join our remarkable journey… www.miramontewinery.com

SOMERSET: REDEFINING A WINE COUNTRY EXPERIENCE Forget what you’ve ever heard about visiting a winery. A visit to Somerset Vineyard redefines what a wine country experience can be. A passion for life is rooted in our culture and DNA. Visitor reviews talk about our beautiful grounds, the friendliness, the vibes, the fun and of course, our wine. It starts with great wine. Somerset is continuing a 30-year tradition of delivering exceptional hand-crafted wines out of its 13-acre vineyard. We specialize in producing sustainably-farmed varieties from Southern France and select regions of Spain. Somerset is only winery in the Temecula Valley that uses the ancient art of making wine in terracotta amphorae’s (clay pots from the Tuscany region of Italy), attracting wine aficionados from around the world. Our hands-on ownership team wants visitors to enjoy our wine in a friendly, informal atmosphere. Your unforgettable visit may include one of our famous behind-the-scenes tours – planned or impromptu – where you might find yourself playing our version of Family Feud or learning about our slogan “No Bullshoot. And if you’re real lucky, you might just hear the story of the drunk bunnies.

Our vineyard sits at the mouth of the famed De Portola Trail, and features an elegant, comfortable tasting room with an oversized, stone fireplace. Our garden-like grounds feature beautiful white roses, surrounded by acres of mature grape vines, 50 olive trees (we bottle our own olive oil), the wisteria garden and the stables, both with an event stage. It’s no surprise that Somerset has become a local favorite. There’s no stuffiness here, and don’t be surprised if you make a few new friends. Most weekends we offer free live music into the evening. Somerset is the first winery in the valley to embrace our Spanish tradition and offer over 102 different Sangria recipes – a perfect complement to a sunny day or warm summer evening. Somerset Vineyard & Winery is a destination for anyone who appreciates the joy of friendship, the thrill of life, and the taste of fun. Visit us on Yelp to book one of our “Behind the Scenes” tours. We welcome you to come and make memories with us. www.SomersetVineyard.com

WAKE UP IN THE VINEYARDS Experience the charm and beauty of Temecula’s famous wine country from one of the valley’s premier working wineries and resorts. Situated on 112 pristine acres, Carter Estate Winery & Resort offers our guests an unforgettable experience. With patios that are steps from our working vineyards, here you can sip morning coffee while watching hot air balloons float above the vines. Our beautifully designed bungalows and suites provide privacy and luxury in the heart of wine country. Each room features soothing deep soak tubs, marble bathrooms, fireplaces and luxurious amenities. Take a dip in the outdoor heated swimming pool overlooking our vineyards, enjoy lunch in your private pool-side cabana or just steps away at the Vineyard Grill, featuring mouthwatering California inspired cuisine sourced from local ingredients. Say “I do” with a vineyard view. The natural beauty of our gardened landscapes and acres of rolling vineyards make the resort a magical location for photos or hosting overnight stays for your wedding guests. The Vineyard Grill can accommodate up to 30 guests and is an ideal place for a private cocktail party or small wedding reception.

The tasting room is a unique experience in the Temecula Valley Wine Country, beautifully appointed award-winning private tasting room and a superb collection of award winning wines. While you are able to indulge in both still and sparkling wines at our winery resort, sparkling wine is the style wine that is produced at the Carter Estate wine production facilities. While Champagne can only be made in the Champagne region of France, from grapes only grown there, Méthode Champenoise may be used on bottle fermented sparkling wines made anywhere outside of the Champagne region. Here at Carter Estate Winery and Resort, we are one of the valley’s only sparkling wine producers in the Méthode Champenoise. Enjoy a seated tour through our tasting menu from sparkling to dessert, along with olive oils from olives grown right outside the tasting room doors and produced locally here in Temecula. ENJOY THE VINTAGE & INDUSTRIAL FEEL OF 1909 Whether you are in Temecula for a vacation, visiting friends, or work, look no further than 1909, a unique restaurant and gastropub located in the heart of Old Town Temecula. As you drive through Old Town, one of the things that draws you to this restaurant is the large patio seating area that is always filled with people, tons of laughter and good times. After reading and hearing about all of the amazing reviews 1909 has from locals and out-oftowners, this restaurant is one to experience for yourself! 1909 is a tribute to the Machado building, the location where the restaurant and bar now lives. Well before the 1909 burger was created, the structure was home to a trading post, livery, auto shop and most notably a bar. During the 70’s, the Longbranch Saloon was known as the roughest place in town to get a drink. Locals often stop in and tell stories of brawls and shootings. In fact, several bullet holes are still in the ceiling. It is no wonder that 1909 continues to draw the crowds. With handcrafted scratch-made food and cocktails, 1909 delivers a unique experience for everyone! The Cedar

Smoked Old Fashioned is a crowd favorite and a show in itself. Don’t want to order off of the cocktail menu? Their mixologists can create one-of-a-kind cocktails based off of your palette. It is truly an amazing experience. Pair that with craft food dishes and you are set! Adding to the many offerings that 1909 has is the brunch menu offered 7 days a week, complete with bottomless mimosas and the infamous house made bloodymarys. For those who want to try something more unique, order the Carnivore bloodymary complete with chicken wings, bacon and a meat straw. Yes, a meat straw! Dine with your kids during the day or come in for a fun evening and late-night menu offerings. And if you happen to have your four-legged children with you, 1909 even has a dog menu that dogs can enjoy. Check out the website for up-and-coming events being offered, special holiday menus or to book your next party. All around, you are guaranteed to find something for everyone at 1909 and your party won’t leave disappointed! www.1909Temecula.com

HOME GROWN GEMS Discover hidden secrets from farms to flowers Temecula Valley’s agricultural roots run deep. The community’s inhabitants have lived off of its abundant, fertile lands from the earliest days of the Pechanga band of Luiseno Native American Indians to the Spanish padres during the Mission Era in the 1700s, the Mexican

rancheros of the 1800s and the first wine growers to plant vines in the 1960’s. You can explore this earthier side of Temecula Valley and see what the growers of today are cultivating by visiting local farms, ranches, and animal-centric attractions open to the public. Temecula Lavender Company’s locally grown lavender is used in their finely aromatic natural product line. Visit their shop in Old Town Temecula to sample batch range soaps, lotions, culinary lavender, and much more – You’ll reap the benefits of aromatherapy the moment you set foot inside the store. Tours of their ranch are available mid to late June through early July by appointment. Established in 1991 by the Temecula Valley Rose Society, Rose Haven Heritage Garden is open daily from sunrise to sunset. During April and May, more than 1,600 roses burst into fragrant bloom for the spring season – a second bloom takes place in fall. They host workshops January through April to let the public get hands on pruning, fertilizing, and other gardening education. A small exotic farm zoo with gourmet chocolate shop and bistro café, the

charming Sugarplum Farm is open to the public daily. Zeus the camel is waiting to greet you! Other exotic animals include a zebra and her zonkey, water buffalo, dwarf horses, and Daisy the pig is always happy to show you around (if she isn’t resting). Self-guided tours end on a sweet note with a chocolate truffle sample from the onsite Chocolate Shoppe. These artisan chocolates are made for some of the finest 5 Star hotels as a guest amenity. Horse lovers will want to see the spectacular 240-acre Galway Downs equestrian center, the region’s premier venue for racehorse training, international horse trails and shows and many more exciting events. During autumn, experience the rustic atmosphere of Peltzer Farm, which is part of a winery. Their annual pumpkin farm features a pumpkin patch, pony rides, a petting zoo, pig races, and more family-friendly fun. Big Horse Feed & Mercantile hosts an October Harvest Festival that features the largest corn maze in southern California, as well as games, competitions, pumpkins, and much more.

HISTORY The Pechanga band of Luiseño Native American Indians were our first residents. They ran their hands through the soil, met under the Great Oak and stood atop the rolling hills overlooking the valley, naming it Temecula, or “place of the sun.” Gateway arches at the northern and southern entrances to this downtown district commemorate our past. In 1859, in the era of the Butterfield Stage, the first U.S. post office was established here, marking Temecula’s permanence and importance. Thus, the year 1859 is boldly emblazoned on each arch. Two decades later, in 1882, the Temecula town site was established with the arrival of the railroad, with a station in Old Town, midway between Riverside and San Diego. Then, in the early 1900s, new roads reached the valley and helped to open up Temecula to the outside world. The Inland Highway (the first, paved, two-lane, county road and ancestor of Highway 395) was built through Temecula Valley in 1915. Until 1949, it ran down Old Town Front Street where restaurants, gas stations, and motels served those travelling through the Temecula Valley.

Meanwhile, from the 1800s until the 1960s, farmers and ranchers blanketed the valley with cattle and crops. In 1905, cattle baron Walter Vail began buying vast acreage here. By 1947, the Vail Ranch included more than 87,000 acres. In 1964, the Vails announced the sale of their ranch to a consortium of developers that had plans for a masterplanned community to be known as Rancho California. When the City of Temecula was incorporated in 1989, residents voted to retain the original Native American name of the village and railroad town site. Today, more than a dozen historical properties dating as far back as the late 1880s still exist and have been repurposed and reopened in Old Town. Yet the area continually improves and re-imagines itself in new, contemporary ways. Mixed in with the historical facades, recently built structures reflect different architectural styles, lending an authentic and thoroughly individual spirit cultivated here for more than 150 years. Although the City of Temecula now boasts a population of more than 114,000 and over 3 million visitors each year, our heritage is never forgotten.

The Temecula town site is established with the arrival of the railroad. The station was built in what is now Old Town.

1915

The first paved two-lane road—Inland Highway—is built through Temecula Valley, running through Old Town.

GIVING BACK Everyone was impacted by COVID-19, some more than others. Pechanga is grateful for the healthcare heroes and the thousands of essential workers who are working tirelessly to serve our communities. Here are a few ways Pechanga was able to support our healthcare heroes, our Team Members, and our broader community. LA RAMS FOOD DISTRIBUTION Residents in the greater Los Angeles area celebrated the holidays with nutritious food, thanks to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, the Los Angeles Rams and Pechanga Resort Casino. For the third drive-thru food distribution event at SoFi Stadium during the 2020 NFL season, the Rams and the LA Regional Food Bank teamed up with Pechanga to provide families in need with holiday meals. Each vehicle that drove through the contactless food distribution also received facemasks and personal-size bottles of hand sanitizer. RADY CHILDREN’S A $550,000 philanthropic gift from the Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians is opening new doors to mental health and autism spectrum disorder care to pediatric patients in Riverside County. With the hefty investment, Rady Children’s has designed and outfitted dedicated clinical space in its existing Murrieta Medical Plaza to support diagnosis and treatment plans that unite developmental, behavioral and medical specialists and focus on each child’s unique needs. AMERICAN RED CROSS While the pandemic surged, wildfires across California burned out of control in the fall of 2020 displacing residents up and down the state. Pechanga chose to donate to the American Red Cross to help with programs for those who need it most. 3,000 N95 MASKS DONATED TO 3 LOCAL HOSPITALS Back to early April 2020, protective equipment was difficult to procure, especially in smaller cities such as Temecula. The Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians donated 3,000 N95 masks to three local hospitals. Each of the facilities received 1,000 N95 masks for doctors, nurses, and frontline medical staff. www.pechanga.com

breweries FARM TO TAP Sustainable ethos, community focus and award-winning brews represent Temecula Valley’s thriving craft beer scene Social connection is what ultimately inspired Refuge Brewery’s co-founder and president Curt Kucera to turn his home brewing hobby into a vocation. A mechanical engineer by trade, he deeply enjoyed the communal aspect of sharing the fruits of his hobbyist labors with friends and neighbors who would gather in his garage to try the latest batch. After decades of this informal ritual, Curt decided it was time to create a sanctuary where greater numbers could congregate and experience that same sense of “getting away from it all”—while socializing over quality brews. Given his passion for Belgian-style beers, the name Refuge is a tribute to the monks who sought refuge in Belgium during the French Revolution.

42 V i s i t Te m e c u l a Va l l e y. c o m

When Refuge opened in 2012, there was only one mature brewery in Temecula. Today, there are more than a dozen diverse breweries, a couple of meaderies, and two distilleries in town. Refuge, a standout in growth has become one of the largest breweries in Inland Empire by production volume. Naturally, beer is the true star of the show at Refuge. At any given time, there are 18 beers on rotation for tasting. Every week, there’s something new and different to sample—usually seasonally inspired. While Belgian-style beers remain their specialty, Refuge also crafts hazy IPAs, classic IPAs, lagers, pale ales and stouts. Blood Orange Wit, a Belgian-style white ale, is their awardwinning flagship beer. In 2017, it earned

the coveted gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival in the Belgian Style Fruit Beer category. Well before that prestigious endorsement, demand for the Blood Orange Wit grew rapidly. Blood oranges have a very limited growing season, so they had to get creative about sourcing the volume of fruit needed to produce the beer—200 pounds go into every batch. They discovered a third-generation citrus farmer in Hemet who had a large blood orange grove on its last legs. It was revitalized and now they buy up to 40,000 pounds from that farmer every year. In addition to supporting local farms, the brewery makes a concerted effort to reduce waste and contribute to sustaining the community. Instead of sending their spent grains to landfill, Refuge donates it to local farmers who use it to supplement livestock feed. Wilson Creek Winery has experimented with spent grain in a mulching process for their vineyards because the high nitrogen content is good for the soil. FARM TO TAP reduce their carbon footprint wherever they can, too! Along with many breweries, Karl Strauss provides all of their spent grain to local farmers to use as feed for livestock free of charge; they use sustainable, recyclable packaging for all of their beers; and they use environmentally friendly to-go containers and menus in their brewpubs. Even their menus are printed on 100% recycled paper! The relationship with local wineries is symbiotic. Many local breweries experiment with making beer in wine barrels, which is uncommon in the beer world. As Curt says, “It’s an outgrowth of us living here, being part of wine country and embracing what this valley can deliver to people.” Cheers to that! For a city of its size, Temecula is home to a big concentration of craft breweries turning out distinctive and awardwinning beers. The growing craft beer movement is such a significant part of

the community and is celebrated every May with Temecula Valley Craft Beer Month. The calendar is packed with special events and festivals and the breweries offer special deals and pours. You might be lucky enough to meet the brewmasters themselves. Whether you’re a beer aficionado doing some “research,” refreshing your palate after a couple days of wine tasting or simply looking for a cool spot to grab a drink and bite, the Temecula Valley Ale Trail overflows with delicious possibilities. While in Old Town, stop by Ironfire Brewing where their ales and lagers have their own unique “brand” or sit on the patio at Stone Church Brewing for a frosty and some people watching. Getting a little hungry? You can find handcrafted pizzas at award-winning Refuge Brewery and sip on a local favorite – Orange Wit. If you prefer to leave the driving to someone else, book a guided brewery tour.

Temecula Wine Country E-Bike Rentals and Borrow Our Bikes allows visitors to explore wine country at their leisure with their state-of-the-art electric bikes. The e-bikes are designed to make the ride smooth and easy on wine country’s paved and dirt roads. No matter the fitness level, with the pedal-assist feature everyone can zip up

the hills and glide down the other side, effortlessly. Toasted Corks was started by a couple wanting to create and build a way to share a glass of wine, a lot of laughs, and a beautiful experience. UP, UP & AWAY Take flight on a hot air balloon Hot air ballooning is a quintessential, all-season Temecula experience—and photo op. Nearly every morning, a flock of brightly hued balloons can be spotted floating above the vineyards. It’s a sight to behold from the ground, and the view is even better from the sky. Three trusted outfitters can get you up there: A Grape Escape Balloon Adventure (hotairtours.com), California Dreamin’ Balloon Adventures (californiadreamin.com) and Magical Adventure Balloon Rides (hotairfun. com). All offer public group flights and private flights can also be booked. Please don’t let a fear of heights prevent you from this serene, bucketlist-worthy activity! The pilots and their crews are highly-skilled with impeccable safety records. Plus, flights never take off when conditions are unsafe. The sunrise flights typically last an hour and reach heights of up to 3,000 feet. Motion sickness won’t be an issue either—it’s a very smooth ride. 60 V i s i t Te m e c u l a Va l l e y. c o m

• You’ll receive a confirmation call the day before your booking with instructions on where to check in for your flight, what to wear and bring. If the flight is cancelled due to weather, you will be notified in advance of the check-in time. • Day of, wear comfortable, flat shoes and dress casually in layers with a jacket for cooler mornings (shorts and open-toed shoes are not allowed). Keep large bags locked in your car and be sure to bring sunglasses and your camera or mobile device for photography. • When you arrive at the designated winery location, you’ll be asked to sign a mandatory liability waiver and then get assigned to a pilot. Once all passengers are checked in, a briefing is delivered to the group before boarding vans or minicoaches to relocate to the nearby field where the balloon will launch. • It takes the pilot and crew about 15 minutes to inflate and heat the balloon. Then you’ll be instructed to climb into the sturdy basket using the footholds, which requires a bit of agility at 48 inches high.

• The balloon will slowly rise and you’ll gain elevation, which will change throughout the flight. Now, it’s time to enjoy the ride and get snap happy capturing the views! The pilot will point out local landmarks and provide insights along the way. • When it’s time to land, the pilot will communicate with the crew on the ground who meet you at the predicted landing location, which is influenced by the way the wind is blowing. • Once on the ground, it takes the crew about 15 minutes to deflate and pack up the balloon. You’ll hop back in the vehicle and be driven back to your starting point at the winery. • Post-flight celebrations may ensue, such as a sparkling wine toast. You might even witness a surprise marriage proposal!
