Jesus at the wedding
Jesus did his first miracle at a wedding in a village called Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ disciples went to the wedding with him. His mother, Mary, was also at the wedding. All the people in the village attended the wedding. It went on for several days. The wedding guests were happy. They all enjoyed the celebrations. Everyone joined in the signing and dancing. The children were also an important part of the festivities. There was a lot of food, enough to feed everyone, but after a while the wine ran out.
Jesus’ mother found out about it. She went to tell Jesus about the wine.
She knew he could help. Jesus said, “Dear Mother, don’t worry about a thing. Everyone will soon see God’s power working through me.” Jesus’ mother told the servants, “Do what Jesus tells you.”
There were six huge stone water jars in the house. The people used water from that kind of jar for special washings. They did that to make themselves pure and clean before they went to the synagogue to praise God. Jesus told the servants to fill the jars with water. They didn’t understand, but they did what they were told. Then Jesus told them, “Now take some to the master of ceremonies, the bridegroom’s friend.”
When the master of ceremonies tasted the water, he was amazed. He was drinking some very good wine! He went to the groom and said, “Everyone brings out the best wine first. They bring out the cheap wine at the very end once the good wine is gone. But you have saved the best wine until the end.” This was Jesus’ first miracle. It showed that he was all-powerful, and that God was with him. When his disciples saw what he had done, they believed in him. John 2:1–11
