Ayse Mehmke

Ayse Mehmke does not differentiate when it comes to who is playing -- as long as they’re a Rustler. “To me, Rustler Pride means cheering on whichever Rustler is playing, whether that means standing in the wind and rain for the football team or cheering on tennis players in 80-degree weather with no shade,” Mehmke said. Mehmke has attended football, volleyball, soccer, basketball, tennis, wrestling, and Wrangler performances this year and makes posters for her friends who compete. Unfortunately, she said, she didn’t make it to a swim meet. She has also made an appearance at every art show. “No matter who’s representing us, you cheer them on,” she said.

Liam Sexton To Liam Sexton, being the owner of the yellow spirit helmet was more of a responsibility than anything else. “Your peers and other students who attend the games generally look to you for ideas on chants and themes and stuff like that,” Sexton explained. Still, he felt “pretty honored” when Adam Agamenoni presented him with the helmet at the beginning of his senior year. Now, at the end of his tenure, Sexton said h e narrowed his choices of successor down “based on what they bring to games as far as energy and how clever they are with chants.”

Rustler

PRIDE

Leeanna Schearer Leeanna Schearer has been a varsity cheerleader throughout her entire high school career, but she’s performed much longer than that. At six years old, Schearer cheered for the Great Falls Storm. Like her older sister Julia, Leeanna played softball from a young age, but “I wanted to be different from my sister, so I just asked my mom one day if I could do it, and she signed me up,” Leeanna said. Her freshman year, the team traveled to state basketball in Butte. “That year, we were such a close family that cheering together for one last time was bittersweet. The seniors took me under their wing and made sure I had an awesome time.” Now poised to graduate, Leeanna has passed on some advice to the rest of the team. “I’ve told them that being a Rustler is more than just walking these halls. You have to have more school spirit than anyone you can think of ! Being a Rustler is being a family and family sticks together.”

The Class of 2018 is nothing if not diverse -- in interests, talents, and goals -- but especially when it comes to the ways they show what it means to be a Rustler. BY MACKENZIE GEORGE

Duncan Hollar

It wasn’t easy for Duncan Hollar to decide who he’d bequeath the spirit stick to at the end of his tenure as one of CMR’s spirit leaders. “We’ve got a couple good underclassmen that would be great for it,” he said. The tradition of the spirit stick is an important one, Hollar said, because the owner is counted on to cheer and be present at every game to show their support for the school. “We’ve got some great athletes at this school who socialize with everyone, so it just makes a great personal atmosphere,” Hollar said.

Jessica Dawson

Michelle Li Even after stopping studio dance, Michelle Li knew she wanted to continue performing. “Wranglers was the perfect fit for me,” Li said. “[I got to show] pride for my school and do something I love.” Li remembers state basketball, held in Great Falls, as her best Wrangling experience. “We had a full student section cheering us on,” Li remembered. “The energy was there.”

4

RUSTLERNEWS.COM / GRADUATION 2018

“Rustler Pride is a huge part of being a spirit leader,” Jessica Dawson said. “I don’t think any of us would have gotten the helmets or the spirit stick if the spirit leaders before us didn’t think we had those qualities.” In possession of the pink helmet, Dawson said she is expected to show up to “most, if not all of the CMR sporting events.” This commitment also includes being the loudest one there, she added. Dawson said this tradition is meant to be more creative and fun than serious. “Only a select few seniors get this opportunity, so I hope whoever we pick really enjoys it,” she said.

Michael Michelsen

As Drum Major, Michael Mickelson had a responsibility to not only be in charge, he says, but to be there for every member of the band. “Part of the reason I tried to make things fun to watch and to listen to is I wanted people to come and listen to us,” he said.

MARY BROWN

Mary Brown’s screenplay-writing escapades began as a joke. At a Thespian Festival her sophomore year, Brown attended a writing workshop that she said was “awful.” That workshop was informative for all the wrong reasons; Brown likened it to a bad variation of MadLibs.

Senior’s writing skills catapult her to success in the drama department

“For adult theatre, it just seemed not helpful,” Brown said. “I jokingly asked to write the next Thespian Show, and Mr. [Chris] Evans said yes.” Brown wrote plays for CMR for both her junior and senior year. Her first work, entitled “Control Alt Delete,” received rave reviews for its fast-paced, exciting scenes. Set during an artificial intelligence apocalypse, the show centered on the lives of survivors and their fears during the tumultuous time. Brown enjoyed the freedom that came with writing the show on her own. Then, she said, her talented cast “helped to transform the page characters into people.” “I want to write shows that make people think,” Brown said. “I want to create original content that everyone can be interested in.” This winter, Brown wrote “The Sad, Sad Tale of Emily Bird,” in which a set of paranormal investigators attempt to solve a murder in a theater that has seen multiple tragedies throughout the decades. “[‘Emily Bird’] was a very collaborative piece. It was much harder to write because it wasn’t just my show,” she

explained. “There were more tears and headaches, but ultimately it was a much better show.” Though she’s always been a storyteller, Brown is pursuing a microbiology degree at Montana State UniversityBozeman. She said she’ll continue writing as a hobby, but “screenplay writing is not stable enough for me.” Throughout her high school career, Brown has been involved in all facets of the drama department -- not just writing. She acts, runs lights, organizes props, and handles sound, too. One of Brown’s favorite memories was from Story Theatre. “We traveled around Great Falls [to elementary schools] to tell fairy tales to little kids,” Brown recounted. “It was great.” She hopes to leave a legacy for the arts department when she departs from CMR. “We want CMR to be known for its art programs. We have one of the best choirs, easily the best pep band, and one of the most talented orchestras in the state,” Brown said. “We believe that our theatre should also reach that caliber.”

{influential} TEACHERS

STEVE

Skaer

LYNN

Ryan

“ Karen Spencer really encouraged everyone to come in and get help if they didn’t understand something, which helped in that class, but also influenced me to do the same for other classes. She influenced me to work hard and do a good job at whatever it is that I’m doing. “ - NATALIE CARR

“ Mike Lathrop always had the confidence that you could do better, no matter how much you wanted to quit. He was always willing to help anyone and would work harder than any teacher I know to make their kids leave the classroom knowing more than when they came in. If you didn’t know how to do things, he would try different ways to make it easier to understand. He would always make sure that every person in the room was at the same place of learning before moving on. He never gave up on anyone. “

JOEL LORANG

“Mr. Skaer helped me with many things other than math. He would make the class and I laugh on a daily basis, having inside jokes and making sure the class understood his jokes just as much as the trigonometry concepts. There was a “sock puppet” joke my class had. I didn’t know the answer on a test, so I drew a sock puppet and then Skaer kept bringing it back up. Even though the subject can be hard to enjoy, Skaer made that class fun. Only time will tell how well he has prepared me for life after high school, but I know he did a good job doing it.”

WARREN FULBRIGHT

“ Christine Sundly’s [Biology 3-4] class isn’t just about cutting up animals. It’s bonding with your lab partners and learning to trust that they won’t cut you with the scalpel.“

KATRINA ROBERTS

“ Jessica Goosen is a leader and almost always has an answer to any question you give her. She might be hard to get along with at first, but she brings the true potential out of you. She’s my favorite teacher from my high school career.“ ISAAC IVERSON

“Mrs. Ryan has been one of my biggest supporters when it comes to pushing my boundaries in music and every other aspect of school. She inspires me every day to pursue what I love doing and to work towards the goals that may seem impossible. She is the one teacher who has made me a more confident and hardworking student. She is a teacher who inspires me every day.”

“ Scott Clapp has influenced me with his attitude towards education and life beyond it. He makes very realistic connections and has very realistic expectations while still pushing me to do well. “

SILAS ANDREWS

“ Anne Bulger is definitely the teacher that has had the biggest influence on me over the past four years. She inspired me to study abroad and really helped me out with the process. She’s always been very supportive of me, even when I was in Germany. I appreciate her love for the language, and you can definitely tell she’s passionate about teaching. I can’t remember very many days where Frau wasn’t in a swell mood, and I will for sure miss that next year.“

Coaches pick Rustler

MVPs

Girls & Boys Soccer

By Quincy Schmechel and Emily Cappis

Football

“Senior Captain Braiden Stremcha’s attention to detail and consistency was the engine that drove the CMR mens soccer team and ultimately earned our MVP award.. Braiden just never seemed to get tired, his performance was quality from start to finish, He will also represent CMR in the shodair allstar classic where i will have the privilege of coaching him one last time. Braiden is class and I wish him all the very best.” Coach Kumal LaCasse

“Gerrit Bloemendaal was a great leader on and off the field, and an outstanding role model for future Rustlers. Gerrit is going on to continue his education at “The” University of Montana Grizzlies where he will also play football.

“Jessica Dawson was a four year letter winner for the CMR Lady Rustler Soccer team. Her leadership on and off the field was outstanding. The qualities that Jess demonstrated will lead to future success in life.

Coach Gary Lowry

Cross Country

Coach Nathan Gregier

Softball

“Annabella Aline is our senior girl MVP. “She is dedicated and knows how to push herself past where most people are willing to try.”

Coach Willie Pyette

Cooper West is our senior boy MVP. “He committed himself to the sport of running and was rewarded by winning a state championship.” Coach Nathan Gregier

“[Abby Alison, Madi Payne, Kayci Edwards, Brooke Crabtree] have dedicated many hours to our program and each bring different attributes. It has been a pleasure working with them over the years! I’m very proud of the young women they have become and I know they are going to accomplish great things in their future!”

14 RUSTLERNEWS.COM / GRADUATION 2018

Coach Lidsey Gustafson

Girls Basketball

Swimming “Morgan Duncan had perfect attendance at practice. She put the team ahead of her individual goals [and] was a leader and role model for younger swimmers in and out of the pool. Overall, [she] was a wonderful person to coach. I believe what stood out for me the most was the unselfishness she demonstrated at the State meet by allowing another swimmer her spot in a relay for the finals.” Coach Ed MacNamee

Golf

“Addison Gardner has been such an important part of our team over the last four years. From her freshman year where she scored the game winning basket in double overtime in our playoff win against Skyview, to hitting 3 three pointers in our comeback win against Butte this year at Divisionals; she has been such a big part of our team. Her and her fellow seniors (Akasia, Kayci and Kyra) have set the table for our program to take the next step and hopefully compete for State Championships.”

“As a team, CMR had three All-State senior finishers at the 2017 State Championship. Ben Kaul and Tucker Thomas both finished “Wall of Fame” worthy careers and helped win the first state championship for boys golf at CMR in 13 years. These two deserve recognition, but if asked to choose one MVP, Duncan Hollar deserves that honor. Duncan was consistently the best golfer on the CMR team for 3 seasons and finished an amazing high school career with a 2nd place medal at the 2017 State Championship, for his 3rd All State finish.” Coach Brian Halverson

Coach Brian Crosby

Wrestling

Tennis

“KC Buday “Kc has been with the program 4 years and this year was an all state selection by placing 6th at the state tournament. He is a very hard working young man who is a great example on and off the mat.” Coach Aaron Jensen

“Mackenzie George is a real leader, has scored more points than any other person on the team during her tenure in CMR tennis, and is the most reliable, helpful person on the team.” Coach Anne Bulger

Staff picks Track

Volleyball Known throughout CMR as the “fastest man in the state,” Damien Nelson is a champion track athlete. Nelson competes in the 100 meter, 200 meter, 4x100 meter relay, and 4x400 meter relay. Nelson remains the 200 meter champ and holds the record as fastest kid in the state; but more than that, Nelson can be seen in the bleachers or on the field at every sporting event, either competing or cheering for his fellow Rustlers.

Fiesty, smiley, and a fantastic athlete, Gabby Hagen is more than just a 5’11” beast at the net. Hagen has been a Varsity volleyball player since her sophomore year of high school while also maintaining a 3.96 grade point average and being a part of honor roll for the past four years.

Turning a PASSION into a PROFESSION By MACKENZIE GEORGE

Ryan Banks Ryan Banks’ pep band career spans even more years than his high school one. With at least 20 band members present every game, and sometimes up to 50, the players knew that they could rely on home support, Banks said. “They want an audience there,” Banks said. “[Without pep band], they would say there’s something missing from the game.” Now, Banks is heading to BYU-Idaho to study music education within their trumpet studio. He said multiple teachers and private lesson instructors helped him achieve this goal. “Watching teachers do what they love [made me want] to dedicate more of my life to music. CMR has been a great place to learn and grow, and it was the platform that I build my music career on.”

Jozette Wells After four years of high school orchestra and two of choir, Jozette Wells is ready to pass on her love of music to others. Planning a major in music education, Wells is on her way to MSU. “Music has always been a huge part of my life, and I want to bring music education to kids from poorer countries,”Wells explained. Wells earned a spot in the AllNorthwest choir her senior year, a competitive honor. “Barb Swaby, [Lynn] Ryan, [Peter] Wilson, and [Steve] Olson really pushed me to become a better musician. “My parents always have told me to do what I love and that’s music, helping people, and travel.”

Andrew Bursiaga

Thanks to encouragement from drama director Chris Evans, moving to California to follow his dreams of becoming an actor and filmmaker is not as daunting as it once was for Andrew Bursiaga. “[Evans] pushed me out of my comfort zone to become characters I wouldn’t normally be seen as,” Bursiaga said. “And I failed a few times, but it’s good to fail so you know what not to do or try a different method of acting, which he showed me how to do.” Bursiaga had a major role in the 2018 winter play, “Wait Until Dark,” in which he played a thug who has a change of heart. “What made me want to pursue acting was realizing how creative filmmakers can be and how actors work,” Bursiaga said.

Mackenzie George

TREASURER VICE PRESIDENT PRESIDENT

GOVERNMENT

Senior Class

For the past four years, Mackenzie George has been a big part of the Rustler student government team. This past year, she represented the senior class as the class president. “I have really enjoyed getting to know the different groups at CMR,” George said. She said she has enjoyed planning events and seeing how things work behind the scenes. “Prom was especially cool for that reason,” she said. ”I think prom was my favorite part because of the dozens of students from both the junior and senior classes that showed up to help that morning.” “[Student government] is a way to take pride in your school other than sports or music.”

“My favorite part of student government has been having the opportunity to be an advocate in our school and also getting to work with such great teachers and advisors for the past four years.”

Abby Allison

Rebecca Bergman

Ever since sophomore year, when her class panel asked her to fill an empty spot in student government, Rebecca Bergman has been an active member of CMR student government. “My favorite thing about student government would definitely be that it has allowed me tons of opportunities to become involved in CMR in a way that I couldn’t have been without it,” Bergman said. Above all, Bergman said she has especially enjoyed tours, volunteering and setting up for school activities.

Bridger Brady

Bridger Brady held the treasurer position this year on the senior representative slate. Brady enjoyed the chances he got to become a more active student of the school. “The fact that you get more opportunities to help out at various school functions and community events [is great],” he said. Of all the projects student government worked on throughout the year, Brady especially enjoyed Prom because of the succesful turnout.

Senators “I would say my favorite thing about student government was being with a good group of people that I probably wouldn’t have gotten to know if it weren’t for student government.”

Gerrit Bloemendaal

“My favorite part of student government was planning prom and getting to hear everyone’s ideas about it.”

Emma Tovson

“My favorite part of student government has been being able to watch people’s ideas grow. Starting from freshman year to senior year, the representatives get more creative and start to know what their class likes and dislikes.”

Shakira Brien

Representatives “I’ve loved getting involved in the programs and things this school has organized firsthand. Knowing what’s going on and being able to get other kids involved has been great and made the events way more fun.”

Annabella Aline

“My favorite part of student government has been making a difference and a lasting impression on CMR.”

“My favorite part of student government was becoming a part of the swamp and blindly voting in the interest of the establishment on the decisions that affect the whole school.”

“I really enjoyed all the support and backing by Mr. Anderson.”

Jake Smith

Nate Moore “I’ve been thankful to have found my passion for education and politics through my position on the board of education. I’ve also loved getting to know kids from around the state and putting on events for CMR.”

PRESIDENT

VICE PRESIDENT

Nico Sanchez Julia Gremaux

Over the past year, Julia Gremaux and Nico Sanchez have been working side by side to give the student body an enjoyable school year and one that they would remember. From pep assemblies to spirit days, the two hand their hands full. For Sanchez, the speeches really stood out as his favorite part of the position. “I liked writing and public speaking,” he said. “[ Just] being able to express my words.” On the other hand, Gremaux enjoyed interacting with students in order to make positive changes around the school. “My favorite part of student government is being the person students come up to to confide in on what they want to see change in their school,” she said. At the beginning of high school, Sanchez said he was rather introverted and wasn’t sure that student government would be the right decision for him, but during his sophomore year he decided to step out of his bubble and change who he was. “I knew I impacted people with other things that I do, such as music and my smile. So, I wanted to make a bigger impact in people’s lives by running for president,” Sanchez said. Gremaux kept busy this year with planning pep assemblies, Homecoming and other activities, but she especially enjoyed spirit days. “I would see kids who don’t get involved in any school activity dress up for a theme day and it would make all my hard work worth it.”

A Stampede

Goodbye 2018 Senior Magazine

Full of school spirit and going to all the games together

By JULIA GREMAUX

Stampede Seniors in front of their elementary school

Principal Kerry Parsons bids farewell to class of 2018 Congratulations to the Class of 2018. Throughout this school year, I have participated in many conversations about the quality of your graduating class. Several of us from the CMR family have been impressed with the leadership, academic achievement, quality citizenship, and many other successes that has set the bar high for future classes. As educators, we take great pride in watching students take advantage of all that this high school has to offer. While many of you will soon be going off to college, hitting the work force, or joining the military, please try to remember the experience you had at CMR. While many of you have experienced some challenges as you navigated through your high school years, I hope that the majority of you can reflect back on a mostly positive experience. The faculty of this high school is proud and appreciative to have served you. We only hope that you have put yourselves in a position to open any door of your choosing. While those doors make look different from one person to the next, the common theme should include happiness and fulfillment. In conclusion, I wish all of the graduates from 2018 success in whatever road you chose. Please do not hesitate to share your appreciation and a word of thanks with your parents, family members, friends, and staff members who have helped you with your journey. The small investment of gratitude can pay huge dividends in helping to recharge the batteries of these folks. Be safe, be kind, be good, and know that you are always part of Rustler Nation!

Letter from the Editor

It is difficult to say that the past three years I have spent in the journalism room have not shaped me more than almost any other life experience. When I entered room 326 for the first time as a freshman seeking an editor’s position for the following fall, I was thinking less of college and more of new experiences. Through painted ceiling tiles and exposure to national publications, I was swept up in the desire to learn more about others, share their stories, and create change in a positive way. A good journalist’s job is to simply report in an unbiased fashion. But that does not mean they are not affected deeply by their work. By exploring almost every pocket of this high school, I picked up life lessons that would have been impossible to glean from a classroom. The teachers taught me about existentialism and equilateral triangles, and the students taught me how to live. I learned from them how to be kind. That putting others first, while sometimes challenging, does not have to be a chore. I watched as we bonded freshman year over shared classes and that mutual deer-in-the-headlights look. I was there as students formed study groups in an attempt to survive junior year together. And now, I’m aware that although tonight may be the last time we are all in the same place, many of those bonds will endure long after caps have been thrown. I learned what it means to be selfless. I watched teammates put each other first, and I watched friends sacrifice their time or plans for other friends. I’ve seen coaches put in countless weekend hours for kids who might have complained about it during the fact but truly appreciated it after.

I learned...period. The faculty of CMR are relentless in their quest to not only impart knowledge on their students, but life lessons, too They showed us what it means to be good people as well as good students. The environment that is room 326 is full of camaraderie, eagerness, acceptance, and passion, and at the center of it all is Beth Britton. She has worked as an English and journalism teacher at CMR for the past 15 years. Before that she was a reporter for The Great Falls Tribune and before that, the Bend Bulletin in Bend, Oregon. We know her simply and affectionately as B, the woman with a penchant for Buddhas, golden retrievers, and the First Amendment (not in that order). She actively seeks out ways to improve not only the paper, but her students’ high school experience. Though this is an important quality, it is not unique to B. Many of the faculty I interacted with in my high school career cared just as much if not more about their students as people as they did about their grades. They were there when we needed encouragement to make it through a difficult day. Most importantly, I learned about the versatility associated with this class. Any good team is comprised of players that contribute something different. In this respect especially, CMR did not disappoint. You’ll find on our cover that the Class of 2018 shines in the medical field and business department, on the court and on the canvas, in languages and in the auto shop, and on the stage and on the field. Congratulations to the Class of 2018 on four years of achievement, challenge, and growth. Tonight is a milestone that marks the end of high school, but the beginning of countless opportunities. Thank you for a memorable four years. Mackenzie George, editor in chief
