Nursing/Academic Traditions The Academic Robe and Cap The history of academic dress is closely linked to that of university education. English universities were the first to “define” acceptable academic regalia. However, it was not until many centuries later that in the United States the regalia hood was designated with specific colors for various disciplines. Today, the velvet-edged hood color represents the specific degree or discipline. The profession of nursing is designated by apricot. A satin field and chevron (the hood lining colors) represent the university or college school colors. The overall size and shape of the hood represents the type of degree: bachelors, master’s, or doctoral (with the narrow end getting progressively longer with the higher ranking degrees). Additionally, the academic black robe is designed to reflect the level of education. Bachelor’s gowns are untrimmed and have pointed sleeves. Master’s gowns have oblong sleeves open at the wrist. Doctoral gowns have bell-shaped sleeves with three velvet bars. The gown itself is trimmed with velvet that reflects either black or the color of the discipline.
Additional Regalia Additional cords, sashes or pins may be worn to signify affiliation with honors societies, school organizations or completion of extracurricular certifications. For example, students wearing red sashes are honored for their work as student officers. Undergraduate students wearing gold hoods have been recognized for their academic achievements. Students and faculty wearing red, white, and blue cords are former or current military members.
Sigma Theta Tau Nursing students are invited to join Sigma Theta Tau, the International Honor Society of Nursing, based on academic achievement, leadership, research potential and nursing practice. Induction ceremonies are held in spring of each academic year. Honored students have the option of wearing a purple and white cord with their during graduation ceremonies.
