MANCHESTER UNITED SOCCER SCHOOLS CAMPS 2014 LEARN ENGLISH PLAY FOOTBALL

LEARN ENGLISH PLAY FOOTBALL “THE EXPERIENCE OF A LIFETIME This is how many of our students have described their English and Football camp. Our intensive two-week camps are crammed full of activity and education, providing a spring or summer study-break in England that will be remembered forever.

FOR 8-17 YEAR OLDS Each morning students receive football coaching from the world-famous Manchester United Soccer Schools. No matter what their ability, they undergo a comprehensive course covering technique, tactics, physical, mental and social elements of the game in a fun and friendly atmosphere. Our students never forget learning to play the United way! Afternoons are allocated to English lessons, delivered using our customised football-themed syllabus. Students are grouped according to ability so that they can all improve quickly. The interactive sessions cover grammar and vocabulary but also place a large emphasis on conversational English.

After an evening football session there’s a chance to socialise and enjoy activities with students from across the globe. This is a great opportunity to experience different cultures and gain social confidence. Accommodation in one of our carefully selected regional centres completes the experience along with various activities and excursions.

We want to thank sincerely all personnel of the camp, especially teachers and trainers, and also cooks! My son has so many fine memories! And the photos are so beautiful! We wish you good luck in everything! And thanks for such interesting excursions. Elena Kaporskaya, 2013 (mother of Bradfield student)

Student welfare is a top priority. MUSS understands the needs of young people travelling away from home. In liaison with the Manchester United F.C.’s Children’s Services Officer we have dedicated teams to care for all young players on and off the field in a safe and secure environment. From the time they arrive, to when they are packing their bags on the last day, our students are well looked after, motivated and happy. They discover England, stay active and speak English - the perfect combination for a study break.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE LESSONS Following a tailor-made curriculum focused on football, our English language classes are unique. Students are motivated to develop their English language with the same enthusiasm they have for football.

“I would like to thank you all for the great MUSS Easter Camp you organized and provided for the kids, and for the great experience you gave them which they will never forget! All Bulgarian kids really enjoyed their stay and came back not only with exciting memories and new friends but with significantly improved football and language skills that will take them on a new level in their development.” Denitsa Prodanova, 2013 (mother of Bradfield student)

• Students per group: maximum of 16 • Students grouped by: English language ability • Classroom tuition per week: 12.5 hours • Conversational English during football: 18 hours • English language skills covered: Speaking, reading, writing, vocabulary and grammar • Support materials provided: personal workbook and end-of-camp reports

The curriculum is designed so that students learn more effectively, because the subjects covered in the lessons are related to something they are already interested in: sport. Lessons are delivered in an interactive, taskbased manner using the latest classroom technology. Well-qualified, enthusiastic teachers with native-level language skills motivate and engage students throughout the sessions. At the start of each camp all students take a short language test which is used to place them in an appropriate class. At the end of the camp, students take home their workbook to show parents and friends what they have learnt. Each student receives an individual assessment from their tutor with advice on how to further develop their language skills. All the students should be able to see a clear improvement by the end of the camp. The project work carried out by students in our most advanced classes helps to prepare them for examinations such as; IGCE, IELTS, Trinity, and ESB. The focus on communication skills helps to prepare students for the full range of Cambridge and Trinity examinations.

FOOTBALL COACHING

LEARN TO LIVE, TRAIN AND PLAY THE UNITED WAY

We teach players how to build up a range of skills, movements and techniques comparable with Manchester United 1st team training. Coaching sessions are designed to allow repetition of these fundamental actions in a fun and exciting way which constantly challenges and motivates players. We help players to develop the courage and confidence to express their ability in games. We help them to understand and learn from their mistakes. The camps represent a completely international soccer environment with English being the spoken language for players from more than 60 countries.

The schedule is designed to give players plenty of time for football and English but also time to enjoy being with their new friends and being in England. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS How can I contact my child on site? We recommend that each child has their own phone to contact you from. The camp will also have an emergency contact phone and you will be given that number before the camp starts.

Will my child get spotted by Manchester United and become a Manchester United player? The main objective of every Manchester United Soccer Schools camp is for all players to achieve success regardless of ability. Camps are not designed for talent identification. However, we are confident that a player will leave with the knowledge and skills to continue to improve. How does the football coaching work? Camps are open to players of all abilities. The MUSS coaches are UEFA-qualified and trained by Manchester United. All players play within specific age groups with a maximum of 16 per group. They have the same MUSS coach throughout the camp. Can my child stay for more than 2 weeks? Each camp lasts 2 weeks, so if students would like to stay for longer, they can book 2 successive camps and stay for a total of 4 weeks. Will my child meet any Manchester United players? Unfortunately not. Manchester United players are either on tour or on holiday at this time of year! Will my child need pocket money? This is entirely up to you. All the food and accommodation is provided, along with all the excursions. Students may wish to bring some money for souvenirs and extra drinks/snacks.

What happens to my child’s passport and valuables? We ask for passports, tickets, money and valuables when they check in. All valuables will be kept in the camp ‘bank’ and given out at certain times of the day. What happens if my child is unwell or injured? Our staff will assess the severity of the child’s condition. We will make the decision as to whether the child needs to see a doctor or needs treatment at the local hospital. If emergency treatment is needed, we make every effort to contact parents/guardians beforehand. Will football kit be provided? Yes, each child receives Manchester United socks, shorts, training top, rain jacket, water bottle and bag. Note; boots and shin pads are NOT provided but are required. Does my child need a certain level of English? No. We encourage you to prepare your child that he/she will be spoken to in English for the majority of time on camp. Children are put into English teaching groups based on ability after an entry test on arrival. Is there a laundry service on site? Yes. Depending on the venue, this is either free or a small fee is charged. Staff will ensure children are putting out their clothes to wash.

Yes, there is an allocated visit day when parents are invited to come and watch football and see their child. Are all meals provided? Yes. 3 meals a day are provided on-site with plenty of options. On excursions they will receive a packed lunch. Menus take into account the amount of activity and sport played. PASTORAL CARE Taking care of your children is our number one priority. We aim to provide every child with the support and reassurance he needs. We know that for many children this is the first time they have been away from home. The first day or two can be anxious for both children and parents. This is why we have three teams of staff on our camps to provide different types of care at all times.

MUSS COACHES Coaches look after the children throughout the football coaching programme, and travel with them on some excursions, including Old Trafford.

ENGLISH TEACHERS The teaching team looks after the children in the classroom, and assists the pastoral care team at other times - early morning, at meal times, on excursions, and at bedtime.

PASTORAL CARE TEAM The team looks after the children at all other times. Pastoral carers live in the same accommodation as the children and are on call 24/7 for any problem that arises. They are accessible to every child and ready to provide help, advice and reassurance whenever needed. Every pastoral care team includes at least one qualified physiotherapist to deal with minor injuries or illness.
