THE STORY OF SHOCKS AND SAVES®

In 2022, Pulse3 began a new legacy through a generous gift to the Central Michigan University College of Medicine. Now, through the Pulse3 Endowment for Cardiovascular Health at CMU, we will continue this important work with our community partners.

Since last year’s game, Pulse3 had placed 32 additional AED’s in the region. Further, through our partnership with B-Well Saginaw, we have assisted over a dozen area schools in achieving Michigan HEARTSafe School status.

On November 21, 2005 Detroit Red Wings player Jiri Fischer suffered a sudden cardiac arrest on the ice during a televised game. He was successfully resuscitated by prompt CPR and AED usage by the Red Wings medical staff. Turning tragedy into triumph, Fischer partnered with Dr. Peter Fattal and the Pulse3 Foundation to create a charity hockey game that would raise funds for AED placement and CPR training in the region. Since then, over 400 AED’s have been placed in locations throughout MidMichigan with thousands receiving CPR training. These efforts have resulted in over 20 lives saved and have promoted the general awareness of cardiovascular health and preparedness.

TEAM SAVES

ALUMNI PLAYERS

JIRI FISCHER #2 DETROIT RED WINGS

He was an imposing figure on defense as he patrolled the blue line for Detroit from 1999-2006. Named Red Wings Rookie of the Year in 2000, he skated to a Stanley Cup Championship with the Wings in 2002, before sudden cardiac arrest sidelined his playing career. A co-founder of the Shocks and Saves Charity hockey game, Jiri is committed to improving health through increased public awareness of cardiovascular disease. We thank him for the contributions he has made over the last 17 years to the Great Lakes Bay Region!

JAKUB KINDL

DETROIT RED WINGS

Originally from the Czech Republic, he was drafted by the Red Wings with the 19th pick of the 2005 NHL draft. A standout for the Kitchner Rangers of the OHL and then AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins, he made his NHL debut for the Wings in 2009. While wearing the red #4 sweater, he notched 16 goals, scoring 68 points in 273 games for the Red Wings before being traded to the Florida Panthers in 2017.

ALUMNI PLAYERS

CHRIS THORBURN ST. LOUIS BLUES

Hailing from Sault Ste. Marie, ON, he played his junior hockey with the OHL’s North Bay Centennials, joining the Saginaw Spirit in 2002 when the franchise moved to Saginaw. Drafted by the Buffalo Sabres 50th overall in the 2001 NHL Draft, he played over 800 NHL games with the Sabres, Penguins, Thrashers, Jets and Blues. An excellent defensive forward, he was among the best penalty killers of the era.

CHRIS TAMER PITTSBURGH PENGUINS

Tamer was drafted in the 4th round, 68th overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins. His career stretches from 1993-2006, playing for the Pittsburgh Penguins, New York Rangers, Atlanta Thrashers, and Chicago Wolves. While at the University of Michigan, he became known for being a strong defenseman and a hard hitter. During one of his best career seasons with the Thrashers, Tamer scored 17 points and played in all 82 games during the season. In 2016, Tamer was named an assistant coach for Team USA at the 2016 IIHF Women’s World Championship.

ALUMNI PLAYERS

TREVOR NILL

MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY

Nill played for Michigan State University from 2008-2012. As junior he was awarded the prestigious Mike and Marian Ilitch Humanitarian Award from the CCHA. He opened his junior season with a point in three straight games and recorded a career-best three blocked shots when going against Western Michigan, later on Nill was drafted to the St. Louis Blues.

JON PAUL MOROSI

Jon Paul Morosi grew up in Essexville and is a Michigan-based sports broadcaster for NHL Network and MLB Network. At Garber High School, he played football, basketball, and baseball — but not hockey, which will be obvious today. The Dow Event Center is where Jon watched hockey in person for the first time, at a Saginaw Hawks game in the 1980s. He narrated the “Spirit Rising” documentary during the 2023-2024 Memorial Cup championship season.

If you had to save a life, could you?

Over 300,000 people each year suffer sudden cardiac arrest. The best chances for survival are immediate notification of emergency medical services, rapid initiation of CPR, and prompt utilization of AED’s. For the last 16 years the Pulse3 Foundation and Jiri Fischer, in partnership with the Saginaw Spirit and Mobile Medical Response have sponsored the Shocks and Saves® Charity Hockey game. This event has supported the placement of over 400 AED’s and trained thousands of people in the Mid-Michigan area in CPR. Now, the CMU College of Medicine is continuing this effort through the Pulse3 Endowment at CMU. So far, over twenty lives have been saved by your support of this event.

If you had to save a life, could you? Stop by the Red Room for a quick CPR refresher and consider a donation to the Pulse3 Endowment for Cardiovascular Health!
