A Community BUILT ON CARE

The right care starts in the community. That's why we partner with locally based organizations on programs that encourage healthy lifestyles, increase access to quality health care, and address and reduce health disparities. We also support free and low-cost clinics across our state. Blue Cross is ready to help support the health of all Michiganders.

THE STORY OF

SHOCKS AND SAVES® On November 21, 2005 Detroit Red Wings player Jiri Fischer suffered a sudden cardiac arrest on the ice during a televised game. He was successfully resuscitated by prompt CPR and AED usage by the Red Wings medical staff. Turning tragedy into triumph, Fischer partnered with Dr. Peter Fattal and the Pulse3 Foundation to create a charity hockey game that would raise funds for AED placement and CPR training in the region. Since then, nearly 400 AED’s have been placed in locations throughout MidMichigan with thousands receiving CPR training. These efforts have resulted in over 14 lives saved and have promoted the general awareness of cardiovascular health and preparedness. In 2022, Pulse3 began a new legacy through a generous gift to the Central Michigan University College of Medicine. Now, through the Pulse3 Endowment for Cardiovascular Health at CMU, we will continue this important work with our community partners.

ALUMNI PLAYERS SERGEI SAMSONOV #14 BOSTON BRUINS Drafted 8th overall by the Boston Bruins in the 1997 NHL draft, Sergei Samsanov won the Calder Trophy as the league’s best rookie scoring 22 goals and 47 points. His career also included time with the Detroit Vipers of the IHL, the Russian National Team, and several NHL franchises.

JOHN OGRODNICK (“JOHNNY O”) #25 DETROIT RED WINGS Playing 14 seasons in the NHL (1979-1993), he was a 5-time NHL all-star selection and was named to the first all-star team in 1985 after finishing 4th overall in league goal scoring with 55 goals and 50 assists. He began his career with the Detroit Red Wings in 1979 and also played for the Quebec Nordiques and New York Rangers.

ALUMNI PLAYERS DERIAN HATCHER #2 DETROIT RED WINGS A physical and intimidating defenseman, his 16-year career began with the Minnesota North stars, after being drafted as the 8th overall pick in the 1990 NHL draft. He remains the longest serving captain of the Dallas Stars, who he led to a Stanley Cup in 1999. A two-time NHL all-star and native of Michigan, he became the first American born captain to win the cup. In 2003, he joined the Detroit Red Wings, where he was defense partner with Jiri Fischer.

CONOR PLACE UNIV. OF MICHIGAN A lifelong Detroit Red Wings fan and current sophomore at the University of Michigan, studying Chemical Engineering; Conor has been playing hockey since he was 4-years-old. In December of 2019, Conor suffered a cardiac arrest, but that did not prevent him from returning to the ice the following month. In his sophomore year, Conor is a member of the University of Michigan Men’s Club Hockey Team.

ALUMNI PLAYERS TREVOR NILL A 7th round pick of the St. Louis Blues in the 2007 National Hockey League draft, Trevor won a gold medal with Team Canada at the World Junior A challenge. Originally from Northville, MI, he attended Michigan State University where he studied mechanical engineering and was a 3-year starter with the men’s hockey team. While at MSU, he was recipient of the prestigious Mike and Marian Ilitch Humanitarian Award and achieved All-Big 10 academic honors. After college, he joined the Toledo Walleye for the 2012-13 season.

JIRI FISCHER #2 DETROIT RED WINGS He was an imposing figure on defense as he patrolled the blue line for Detroit from 1999-2006. Named Red Wings Rookie of the Year in 2000, he skated to a Stanley Cup Championship with the Wings in 2002, before sudden cardiac arrest sidelined his playing career. A co-founder of the Shocks and Saves Charity hockey game, Jiri is committed to improving health through increased public awareness of cardiovascular disease. We thank him for the contributions he has made over the last 15 years to the Great Lakes Bay Region!

STORIES OF SURVIVAL At Pulse3, this is our “WHY”... In late 2022, the Saginaw Arts and Science Academy embarked on a journey to achieve Michigan HEARTSafe Schools designation, supported by Pulse3 and the CMU College of Medicine. Their cardiac emergency team underwent training—among them was security officer Greg Price. After completing a successful cardiac emergency drill on site later that year, SASA officially received notification of their HEARTSafe award on June 5, 2023 at 0807. That same day, roughly 4 hours later, Greg collapsed in the gym while supervising students, suffering from sudden cardiac arrest. Assistant Principal Kraniak and teacher Sophia Gault began life-sustaining CPR, while students retrieved an AED donated by Pulse3. Minutes later, this AED provided the shock that restarted Greg’s heart, ultimately saving his life. Tonight, we salute Greg and his lifesaving team.

STORIES OF SURVIVAL On April 27, 2023, community member and classical guitarist Ed Coates was performing at an event in Midland. After his set, he put his instrument in his car and suddenly collapsed in full cardiac arrest. Ed was with his family, including his son-in-law Dr. Toby Long, who assisted EMT’s in their response efforts. Ed’s wife Cindy was on site when paramedics used the AED on her husband and felt tremendous relief when, after three shocks, she heard them say “we’ve got a heartbeat!” Ed knows how very lucky he is. “The likelihood of survival if you have a cardiac arrest outside of a hospital is very low, less than 10% I’m told,” he said. “Having the paramedics respond within seconds or minutes was very impactful. I am alive because of the first aid rescue using the AED.”

If you had to save a life, could you? Over 300,000 people in the nation each year suffer sudden cardiac arrest. The best chances for survival are immediate notification of emergency medical services, rapid initiation of CPR, and prompt utilization of AED’s. For the last 16 years the Pulse3 Foundation and Jiri Fischer, in partnership with the Saginaw Spirit and Mobile Medical Response have sponsored the Shocks and Saves® Charity Hockey game. This event has supported the placement of nearly 400 AED’s and trained thousands of people in the Mid-Michigan area in CPR. Now, the CMU College of Medicine is continuing this effort through the Pulse3 Endowment at CMU. So far, 14 lives have been saved by your support of this event. If you had to save a life, could you?
