Welcome Welcome to Warszawa, we are so happy you all made it for the 2011 CMWC. It’s nice to be back in Europe after a few years of beating around the bush in Guatemala, lost in translation in Tokyo, and getting stuck on an island in Toronto. Warsaw is a unique messenger city, we are proud to have kicked most corporate city bike courier entities out of our capital, by creating a bike messenger co-op. The members make 100% of the value of the run, wear huge smiles, have no boss, serve the biggest companies in town, and are all connected by Motorola two-way radios with no centralized dispatcher. Everybody works for everybody else, and it’s been like that for over 10 years and counting, fuck yeah!! Warsaw (as you know) is also the home of the Warsaw Car Killers, and we are happy to announce our 10th anniversary in 2011. We created the first Polish messenger championships in 2001, and a few more in the following years. We had our bouts wth riot cops, pacified a fair share of drivers, and generally over the years we made it clear that cyclists are to be respected. In 2004, we organized a killer ECMC at the SKRA stadium, and rocked with over 400 racers. As a city, Warsaw has had it pretty rough over the last century. First the Germans had a dream to turn her into a lake, then the Russians rebuilt her using cheap ass Russian concrete slabs, making her grey and dull. Then the globalists came, covered the concrete in glass and alu and set up shop. So now our city is scarred by history and sometimes shows it, but hey, it’s summertime and she’s all green and mega fucken happy to see y’all here. Have fun!!! 2

Main Race

SKLEPROWEROWY.PL Sprints

The Reason why most of you are here, to race the main race! A grueling massively technical race course, made up of mostly two way “streets”, with over 20 checkpoints, and various no riding zones will definetly get you sober in seconds. The main race concept itself is a brainchild of the fishmeister himself, FISH (HOLLAND). It’s his years of international messengering experience, dozens of cycle messenger races raced. that make this the most intensive race experience ever!

Sprints will take place on main straight of the main race course. Eliminations will be merciless, as two riders will race for one spot in further heats, so if you lose your pair, you are out, the winner times get posted, and the best sixteen go on to Sunday’s finals.

BULLIT Cargo Race

BAGABOO Fixed Gear Events

The Cargo Race takes place during Sunday‚ as main race final, on the main course about an hour after the main start, and will last about 2 hours. A gruelling two hours as there will be plenty of difficult sized packages to move around the track. to somehow load up on heavy and big packages and move them around the course.

Back to the basics, no brakes, no cables, no nothing. Just bare fixies compete for Fixie King and Queen, in trackstand and Skid eliminations and finals. Remember to wear your bag hipsters!

Sideview mirror kick

Footdown

A Warsaw CMWC first!! Who can kick the mirror the furthest, while riding. Get extra points for style.

Riders go head to head and wheel to wheel trying to knock each other down. 10 bike eliminations lead up to a 20 rider final, all on the tiny love boat dock.

Main Race

It’s very important you read and follow these Main Race Guidelines for a genuine awesome and safe racing experience. When you read these guidelines and explanations you will find there is a lot of words to describe a normal messenger working day.

BIKE MESSENGER WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS 2011 WARSAW, POLAND, EUROPE, PLANET EARTH.

This is the Cycle Messenger World Championships, This is it, every year this is where you exercise your skills, your individuality, speed, logistical insight and common sense you have developed over your years as a bike messenger wherever in this world. Your job probably involves loads of traffic, other bikers, pedestrians, etc and in all of this craziness you need to be in some kind of shape, you need to avoid collisions to stay at work and keep out of troubles, you need to know your way around the city like no one else, and you were just given a map of the city and some kind of good advice to make your life a bit easier, but the rest you still needed to figure out yourself.

Well this race isn’t really a lot different from your normal workday, only in SPEED... times ten, you might say its whack.

You: - need to learn this city by heart. - need to figure out alot by yourself. - can’t plan this race, it will change all the time. - need to find the shortest routes and make the best decisions as everyone is given the same calls in the same order. On top of all this we also present you the MesserGuerilla to ensure you will enjoy your time on the racecourse and bug the shit out of each other trying to survive as dealers and bootleggers. We have decided that splitting up the woman racers from the male racers is sexistic, so everyone races mixed, tho there will be prices and results for both sexes in all events exept the MesserGuerilla, lets see who is more evil! GODSPEED YOU BLACK MESSENGERS!!! Fish 0369

This is a messenger race, the rules may change!

RULES This race is all about the first ten rules from the instructions to life written down by the Dalai Lama (please note the race creator is agnostic but likes these guidelines): 1. Take into account that great love and great

achievements involve great risk. 2. When you lose, don’t lose the lesson. 3. Follow the three Rs:

Respect for self Respect for others Responsibility for all your actions. 4. Remember that not getting what you want

is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck. 5. Learn the rules so you know how to break

them properly. 6. Don’t let a little dispute injure a great

friendship. 7. When you realize you’ve made a mistake,

take immediate steps to correct it. 8. Spend some time alone every day. 9. Open your arms to change, but don’t let

go of your values. 10. Remember that silence is sometimes the

best answer. Well the others are good as well for your allout CMWC experience! check them out.

T C E SP

These guidelines are mandatory because this year’s racecourse is mostly 2-way, which means you can ride mostly in the most direct way between 2 checkpoints.

• STRICTLY FORBIDDEN: Endangering your

fellow race mates, Disrespecting any of the Crew, or any other behaviour that is in general not tolerated in the real world, can and will result in loss of calls and/or race results! • We are on the mainland of Europe, so we

ride on the RIGHT SIDE OF THE ROAD. • Stay as far right as you can at all times and

pass each other on the left. • There will be oncoming traffic. • At intersections safety measures are

taken, which involves a small triangular roundabout. • The riding direction on the roundabouts

is ALWAYS COUNTER CLOCKWISE or PASSING ON THE RIGHT. • No-bike zones – do not enter with your

bike, neither walking or riding. • Walk zone means NO RUNNING! • The course is made up like a city, the

map only shows street names and dots to indicate where checkpoints are. • ALWAYS look over your SHOULDER when

changing directions, also hand signs are a handy instrument towards your fellow racer. • The Race Creators, Checkpoint Crew,

Crew and Dispatchers have the LAST WORD in disputes. • Disputes will only be handled at the

dispatch booth in presence of Race Crew. • The Race Creators are fully under the

impression we are dealing with grown up people and we DO expect everyone will proceed as suggested above. We will not take any responsibility for mindless behaviour during all races. 11

Racing basics • Your waybills will be a “waybill style” with 3,

4 or 5 calls on each waybill. The waybill only shows pick up addresses: company name, street address and an indication letter for the checkpoint crew to tell them which delivery you have to take and sometimes the drop address. You can work the deliveries through the waybill in any order, however there is only one fastest way. • Your name and race number must

be on the waybill when leaving the dispatch area. If a waybill is handed in to a checkpoint without a racer number, it will be X’d with red ink on the spot, the racer then goes back to dispatch to beg for a new waybill • You need to finish the whole sequence of

waybills. Every time you finish your waybill (filled out with your name, race number, delivery info, signatures), you return to the “DISPATCH”, show your complete waybill, and receive a new one in sequence.

12

• Please double check with your dispatcher if the

sequence number on the waybill is following up with the waybill you just handed in. • Racers will have their race numbers written

on their arm to double check for checkpoints and dispatch. • At pick-up checkpoints the crews will check

your race number and name on your waybill, check the pick up box and sign it with their checkpoint number stamp, give you the delivery address, according to the indication letter behind the pick up address. If the drop address is not on the waybill You MUST single-handedly write the drop address and checkpoint name on your waybill. • At the delivery checkpoints the crews will

check again for name and number. They will sign with their checkpoint number stamp. • At the security checkpoints you might have

to stamp your waybill on the way out and in, so make sure you check your manifest. Your bag might be searched for any illegal contraband from the Messenguerilla. If found it will be confiscated and smoked by the CMWC organizers.

Please note a lot is possible in this race. However: • All penalties are manifested by calls taken off the final result. • When a waybill doesn’t have your name and

number on it, you will lose all the calls. The dispatch will check for name and number and will write this on your waybill and notify the judges by putting a big red cross on the waybill. • Waybills that are untidy will result in loss of

calls. • Unsigned and/or incomplete calls are

deducted. • You must complete every waybill taken from

the dispatch. Except your last one, it can be incomplete. • When a Race Crew member or marshal

see you riding on the wrong side, cutting off corners, any dangerous turning or riding, etc, etc, already completed calls will be deducted for each violation registered. Some violations will be treated more seriously than others. So don’t try your luck.

• If you run in walking areas, or don’t lock

your bike at bike lock points (no free locking allowed), calls will be deducted from your end result for each violation registered, and your bike might be stolen, • Dangerous riding, Endangering other riders,

Fighting, Throwing stuff at people, could result in total result loss.

Preliminary Race (Qualifications) The race is created to divide the woman and men from the girls and the boys, is takes place in Time Trial style with racers starting one by one over the duration of the day. The starting order is first come first serve with a line up in the racer’s corner next to the start finish tent. The amount of calls comes first, time is second. The max.time limit for every rider is set for 2 HOURS!!! Any waybills handed in after 120 minutes will be trashed.

If there is a queue, stand in line and wait for your turn.

13

Finals 20 woman, 80 men and an additional 20 guerillas race in the finals. This race will have a Le Mans Start, better results have a better starting place, woman and men mixed and lined up by result. However the top twenty Guerilla’s will have the last twenty places on the grid. Guerilla riders can have a go at the championship title!!!

• There are TWO SEQUENCES of waybills. • Everyone starts with a randomly given waybill

from the FIRST SEQUENCE at the start, these will be stuck in the bike’s wheel. • There is NO TIME LIMIT for the first

sequence. However, when the FIRST RACER (M/F) comes in at the dispatch booth with the whole first sequence finished, an alarm will sound for the LAST HOUR OF THE RACE. This racer will start his second sequence at this time. • Every racer will need to try to fulfil the FIRST

SEQUENCE to advance to the SECOND SEQUENCE. Even when the last hour is ticking away. • At the dispatch booth you will be notified by

a countdown clock as to how much time you have left to FINISH AS MANY WAYBILLS AND CALLS AS YOU CAN. • Only your last waybill doesn’t need to be

complete. Only waybills handed in before the last hour is up will be counted. Expect a line up at the end, so plan for that. • It should be impossible to finish all the waybills,

so the amount of complete and signed for calls counts most, and after that the total time. • You MUST remember your first waybill

number in your first sequence, your last waybill will be the number that comes before. (i.e. Start with #22, finish with #21) thereby completing the whole sequence.

MessenGuerilla. There are a few very good reasons to do the MessenGuerilla: 1. The 20 richest guerillas from the preliminary races advance to the finals and they are allowed to take a throw at the championship title too!

3. You can do both the race and Guerilla, or one... or whatever, just don’t talk about it, don’t ask the organizers about it, just fucking do it! 14

2. You start in the eliminations and finals alongside the racers, but can choose to go over to the dark side at any point during your 2 hour qualifying session, and become a smuggler, dealer, mafia boss or whatever you wish!

Literally “milk bars” in polish. A relict of the communist era, when the establishment subsidized cheap meals for the working class. You can get a full meal for a low price, with Poland’s traditional favorites. Common item include pierogies, crepes (nalesniki), cabbage (kapusta), omlettes, cutlets, potatoes and great soups (you must try chłodnik – a cold soup). Worth a vist. Remeber to take a dictionary, or a fellow polish guide, as english isn’t usually popular there. Or just stick to pierogies: z mięsem - with meat, ruskie - with cheese, z kapustą i grzybami - with cabbage and mashrooms.
