Aventura Arts & Cultural Center marks construction milestone with topping off ceremony New 325-seat waterfront performing arts facility to open in June The City of Aventura, in conjunction with the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, recently celebrated the topping off of the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center, a new 14,864square-foot, 325-seat waterfront performing arts facility opening this summer. The ceremony marked the completion of the building's structure with a flag hoisted atop the roof in commemoration of the last beam placed. Following hard hat tours, the Aventura

City Commission welcomed guests to a reception with presentations by Aventura Mayor Susan Gottlieb, Broward Center President and CEO Kelley Shanley and Aventura Arts & Cultural Center Advisory Board Chair Gloria Muroff. The evening ended with a performance by award-winning entertainer Avi Hoffman, who will bring his acclaimed shows "Too Jewish?" and "Too Jewish, Too!" in repertory to the Center in July. Upon completion, the facility will host performing arts, cultural and educational programming for all ages including a summer camp for kids in June. "The completion of the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center will provide the missing piece of the puzzle to our City of Excellence," said Mayor Gottlieb. "This facility will be a great asset to the City of Aventura, and its programming will fulfill an unmet need within the local community." The Aventura Arts &
Cultural Center, which is managed by the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, is located adjacent to the city's community center at 3385 NE 188th Street. The Center will feature a glass-encased lobby with a spectacular view of the water, stage, dressing rooms and backstage area with storage and loading dock. "Somewhere between the groundbreaking and an opening comes the topping off ceremony, which signifies the shift from construction to plans for bringing this building to life," said Shanley. "This building and all it represents is a credit to the Aventura City commission and city staff." In attendance at the topping off in addition to Mayor Gottlieb were City of Aventura Commissioners Bob Diamond, Billy Joel, Teri Holzberg, Michael Stern and Vice Mayor Luz Weinberg. Commissioner Zev Auerbach was unable to attend the ceremony. Members of the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center Advisory Board in addition to Muroff are Amit Bloom, Barbara Brodsky, Nancy Gillen Doyle, Judy Scott Lotwin, Dr. Jules Oaklander, Ibis Romero, Lenore Toby-

Proceeds from the $150 donation for a brick will support cultural programs. General Contractor Suffolk Construction broke ground on the project in April. The architectural firm is PGA. Aventura Hospital honors three heroes at 8th annual Police Appreciation Day Aventura Hospital recently hosted the 8th annual Aventura Police Appreciation Day. Each year, the hospital hosts a breakfast and lunch in honor of the Aventura Police Department, recognizing its officers' unwavering dedication to protecting the residents of the City of Aventura and the staff of Aventura Hospital. This year, an additional award was presented to three police officers who saved the life of a young woman. "During breakfast, the police conducted their morning roll call," said Security Officer Ira Wolf. "Following roll call, Rick Kennedy, COO for Aventura Hospital, presented Sgt. Glenn Kaptain, Ofc. Juan Gonzalez and Ofc. Helen Morrison a Hospital Director of Behavioral Health Denise plaque honoring them for their part in saving the life Aventura O'Connell; Aventura Police Chief Steve Steinberg; Aventura Hospital CEO Heather Rohan and Director of Emergency of a 31-year old female." The woman had collapsed while jogging and Services Julie Millar stopped breathing. Kaptain immediately responded performing both CPR and applying A.E.D. to administer emergency care to the patient. "I am a true believer in using CPR," stated Ofc. Morrison, a 30 year police veteran. Rescue arrived and transported the patient to Aventura Hospital's Emergency Department, where physicians ordered Code I.C.E., a new emergency procedure for treating patients who have suffered cardiac arrest. Also called induced hypothermia, the procedure involves the use of a non-invasive device called Arctic Sun, which rapidly cools the patient's body temperatures in order to save brain function. By lowering the body temperature, the metabolism slows down; this means that the tissues and organs require less oxygen and nutrients to stay healthy longer. In 48 Aventura Police Capt. Racks Italian Bistro & Market wins Best Pizza in America award BY LYNN CARROLL Racks Italian Bistro & Market's Black Truffle Pizza was recently named Best Pizza in America, beating out the former U.S. and World champions, at the American Pizza Championship, a national contest sponsored by PMQ, a leading pizza industry magazine. "Our crust is what led us to victory," says Steve Lieber, director of operations for GR Restaurant Management Group, which owns the local bistro and also Coal Mine Pizza in Boca Raton. "Dough management and maturation is a lost art." Lieber, a graduate of the renowned International School of Pizza led by ninetime world champion pizza master Tony Gemignani, developed his award-winning pizza recipes by studying the traditions of the first pizza makers in the U.S. "At first we tried shipping in water Lieber, Racks Italian Bistro & from the Catskills, he says, "but as I stud- Steve Market ied more I learned it's not the water that makes great pizza but proper dough management. "The first American pizza makers would let the dough sit for two or three days, which lets the yeast convert the starch to sugar on a molecular level. So there's much less chance of heartburn, and the crust is light and airy." Florida pizza makers are particularly vulnerable to the kinds of errors that lead to starchy, hard to digest crusts, says Lieber. Like its sister establishment in Boca, Racks also uses coal ovens, Lieber says - another legacy from America's first pizzerias. Racks Italian Bistro & Market's dedication to excellence and commitment to providing the best in family dining at reasonable prices is already making it one of the most popular eateries in North Dade. Racks Italian Bistro & Market is located at 3933 NE 163rd St., North Miami Beach, on the Intracoastal Waterway. Hours are 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily; bar open until 2 am. It's back‌ the 2nd annual Running of the Brides sale at Filene's Basement It's shopping as a full-contact sport and the women who take part in the Running of the Brides event in South Florida wouldn't have it any other way. The legendary bargain stampede will take place on January 15 at Filene's Basement in Aventura. If you've ever seen this event in the news, you'll know that many brides-to-be and their helpers literally pounce on dresses priced from $249-$699 that might otherwise cost as much as $9,000. "We promise our vendors that we won't reveal the labels, but these are well-known names featured on the pages of popular brides' magazines," said Nicole Iaricci, Filene's Basement's wedding gown buyer. Which is why, when the doors open, there is a mad dash to the racks - held up by store employees so they don't topple - and those racks are usually stripped bare in under a minute.
Then it's time for the women to strip down to leotards, sports bras or even underwear - and try on gowns right there on the sales floor. Fitting rooms are also available. If it doesn't quite fit, a seamstress can do the trick, and the bride can still come out way ahead. But what happens if a petite bride found she pounced on a size 14 dress in pink chiffon instead of a size 4 in white satin? That's when the real fun begins, as the women start bartering to find the right designer or size. It's a ritual that turns Filene's Basement into an old-fashioned bazaar. Filene's Basement is at 176th and Biscayne Boulevard in Aventura. Store hours for the sale are 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Checks, credit cards and cash are accepted. Wedding gowns are not returnable.

Over 1300 gowns will fill the racks in a variety of styles, seasons, fabrics and shades, sizes 2 - 26. For those who don't like shopping in crowds, there are plenty of great deals to be found later in the day. The experts from Sudsies will be on-hand to answer questions about alterations and cleaning.

VIEWPOINT Our national pastime is too brutal BY DONALD KAUL Football is our national pastime. It used to be baseball—no longer. It's hard to believe but there was a time when there was hardly a town or village that didn't support some sort of baseball team, be it minor league, semi-professional or amateur. Baseball players were national heroes. The World Series was a big deal. For six months of the year the sport dominated the water-cooler-lunch-room chitchat. No more. Now it's football, football, football. And it's not just six months a year, what with the draft and training camps and exhibition games it's more like eleven. It's all poor baseball can do to seize the nation's attention for a couple of weeks when it plays its World Series and even then its hold is tenuous. (Quick, who was the losing team in the World Series this year? I thought so.) Yes, football is king; of that there can be no doubt. There's only one more thing that needs to be said about it: It's a truly awful game. It's a brutal game played by bullies for the enjoyment of people who would be at home watching gladiators fight to the death in the Coliseum of ancient Rome. And, like ancient Rome, football uses its combatants like Kleenex, then discards them with hardly a thought. Just before Christmas the National Football League announced its ongoing study of the effects of head injuries on players was so compromised by conflicts of interest that it was shutting it down. After stonewalling critics and players for years on the subject of concussions and their aftereffects, the league finally acknowledged that yes, perhaps concussions were a bad thing. "It's quite obvious from the medical research that's been done that concussions can lead to long-term problems," a league spokesperson said. And just now they figure out that getting hit in the head repeatedly might be bad for you? Dozens of cases of dementia, early Alzheimer's disease and cognitive decline among older players have surfaced in recent years. Autopsies performed on the brains of
deceased players have revealed signs of unusual damage, traceable to brain trauma. Nor is a head injury the only fruit of a career in football. Sports Illustrated recently ran a piece about Dave Pear, a former Pro Bowl defensive lineman and Super Bowl champion who ended a five-year playing career in 1980. "I wish I never played football," he told the magazine. Because of injuries he sustained playing football, injuries he was encouraged— indeed, required—to play through as a player, he walks with a cane, when he walks at all. He suffers from vertigo and memory loss and is in virtually constant pain. He has undergone eight surgeries in the past 18 years, including disc removal and rod fusion in his back, arthroplasty in a hip, as well as a neck operation. The Sports Illustrated writer Jeff Pearlman, who has interviewed more than 150 former players on the subject, says that roughly 60 percent of them live with extraordinary physical pain as part of their daily lives. Barry Sanders was a favorite player of mine. I thought that the Detroit Lions player the most spectacular running back I'd ever seen. I still think that. He retired suddenly about 10 years ago and no one could figure out why. He seemed in good health. He was at the top of his game. But he quit. Recently he revealed that in the summer before his retirement he'd gone to Texas for a golf tournament and seen Earl Campbell there. If Sanders was the flashiest runner, Campbell was the one who best combined power and speed. He was a monster, a punishing running back who ran over people, then away from them. And when Sanders saw him that summer, he couldn't walk. He needed a golf cart to get around. Earl Campbell, the indestructible. That's when Sanders decided to quit. If football players were animals, then football would be, like dog-fighting, outlawed. The players are our pit-bull; we are their Michael Vicks. Some national pastime. -Minuteman Media columnist Donald Kaul lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Who wants to die for Karzai? BY JIM HIGHTOWER With some notable exceptions and a great deal of grumbling in its ranks, Congress seems to be going right along with Obama's Afghan plan. Such as it is. Washington will add some 30,000 U.S. troops to the war, practically none of which will be loved ones of White House staffers, lawmakers, Pentagon officials, and the war contractors who are behind the push. This latest escalation means 100,000 of our troops will soon be on the line there, facing trauma, maiming, and death. America's money goes with them—the cost of maintaining each soldier in this faraway land is roughly a million dollars a year. For what? We're told that the goal is to build up the Afghan army and central government of President Hamid Karzai so they can, someday, secure their own divided, war-torn country. Whether that's really in our national interest, much less worthy of the sacrifice of American blood and treasure, is doubtful. But one thing is not in doubt: Continuing to prop up Hamid Karzai
is a disgrace. His inept and thoroughly corrupt presidency, assured only by bribes and massive electoral fraud in his recent re-election campaign, is not worthy of a single American life or dollar. Obama claims that Karzai will end the corruption—or else. Or else what? No one says. Meanwhile, at a recent anti-corruption dog-and-pony show in the Afghan capital, Karzai made a terrible showing. He made a point of defending the city's mayor, who's already been convicted of misusing public funds and is facing more charges of embezzlement and abuse of power. Karzai called him a "clean person" and pushed to reverse his conviction. Washington keeps telling Karzai to get rid of all the corrupt officials in his government. But wait—it's his government. He's the chief of corruption! Why should anyone else die for this guy? -Jim Hightower is a radio commentator, writer, public speaker, and winner of the 2009 winner of the Nation/Puffin Prize. He's also editor of the populist newsletter, The Hightower Lowdown.

O'Connell & Goldberg, Inc. literally has just signed its "smallest" client ever. The Hollywood based agency has been selected to handle public relations for Brianna Kahane, a 7-year old Boca Raton resident who Ellen DeGeneres labeled a "violin prodigy." A born performer, Brianna has been playing the violin since she was three years old. She is naturally gifted with perfect pitch, a photographic memory and an amazing ear, which enables her to easily commit to memory and perform lengthy, complex violin pieces in a short period of time. Her range of performance pieces includes classical music, movie and show tunes, as well as songs by popular current artists and classic rock icons. "She looks like a modern day Goldilocks, with cascading blonde curls and a sweet, impish grin," said agency partner and co-founder Barbara Goldberg." But once she tucks her violin under her chin and closes her eyes, she is transformed into a poised musical sensation that transfixes her audiences with her incredible talent and performance ability." Brianna appeared on national TV on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, has been
featured in an array of regional television news pieces, and performed live on The South Florida Today program. She has performed for acclaimed violinist Arnold Steinhardt, Josh Groban's concertmaster Lucia Micarelli, Chris Botti, Yanni and Yanni's current concertmaster Samvel Yervinyan, among others. The youngest member of the Symphony Division of the acclaimed Florida Youth Orchestra, which traditionally recruits musicians of high school and college age, she received a standing ovation for her performance at The Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. Brianna won "Best in the State of Florida for Violin Solo" this year at the Florida Federation of Music Clubs (FFMC) State Final Competition, where she was the youngest competitor in her category, and she was featured in a special "Best of Boca" edition of Boca Raton Magazine that focused on the next generation of young talent. Historically Yours BY BOB DIAMOND DIPLOMACY AND INFAMY In an article in the N.Y. Times (12-06-09) authorhistorian James Bradley raised a gut-wrenching issue: did President Teddy Roosevelt’s diplomatic policy in 1905 set the stage for the infamous Japanese attack upon Pearl Harbor? According to Bradley, Teddy’s efforts to negotiate the end of the war between Japan and Russia earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1905, however, in private correspondence, Teddy stated that he had concealed from everyone that “he acted on Japan’s suggestion… and expressed desire.” He described the Russians as “untruthful and untrustworthy,” while he described the Japanese as “A wonderful, civilized people.” Without war being declared, the Japanese pulled the surprise attack on the Russian navy at Port Arthur in 1904; the Russians called it “a violation of international law.” Teddy wrote to his son, “I was thoroughly pleased with the Japanese victory, for Japan is playing our game.” At the inception of the war, Teddy

privately wrote that he would maintain strict neutrality but his sympathies were “entirely on Japan’s side.” He believed that Japan should assume the leadership role as protector over the Asiatic nations as the United States did over the American continent in the Monroe Doctrine. According to Bradley, in a secret cable to Tokyo in July 1905, Teddy approved “the Japanese annexation of Korea” and agreed to an “understanding or alliance” among Japan, the United States and Britain. In violation of a U.S. pledge in 1882 to support Korea’s independence, Teddy agreed not to interfere with any Japanese claim to Korea and in return Japan would respect U.S. ownership of the Philippines. Bradley states that the mistake Teddy made was in believing the Japanese would stop at Korea, “as America had stopped expansion in the Pacific after taking Hawaii and the Philippines.” Japan’s Declaration of War in December 1941 stated that Japan cannot continue to tolerate the perpetuation of the situation that the “countries of East Asia for the past hundred years or more have been compelled to observe the status-quo under the Anglo-American policy of imperialistic exploitation and to sacrifice themselves to the prosperity of the two nations.”

Shareholder Andrew I. Lewis helps community associations stay afloat BY LYNN CARROLL
PROVOCATIVE QUESTIONS FOR PROVOCATIVE PEOPLE LC: What is Eisinger, Brown, Lewis & Frankel's focus? AL: We are a nine-attorney law firm that concentrates primarily in the areas of community association law and real estate. We also have a very experienced litigation department that handles general commercial litigation matters often relating to these same areas. LC: These are tough times for condominium associations. How can your firm help? AL: We focus on the well-being of the approximate 500 associations that we represent. It is no secret that community associations are facing significant problems pertaining to the collection of both regular and special maintenance assessments. This is exacerbated by the reluctance of mortgage lenders to initiate and consummate their own mortgage foreclosure actions against unit owners or homeowners, mainly due to the fact that these
lenders would then have to commence paying for future assessments (as well as certain past due assessments) as the new owner of the subject unit or home. Our firm makes concerted efforts to compel the mortgage lenders to proceed expeditiously in such cases by taking the initiative in setting hearings, filing motions to compel, and asking the courts to set foreclosure sales. At the same time, if there are renters in the subject unit or home, we will seek collection of the rents for and on behalf of the association to cover past due assessments. LC: Has the development side of your practice dried up? AL: It's certainly not what it once was, however our firm's success has always been and continues to be largely attributable to the diversity of our practice and our proficiency in all areas of real estate. We continue to grow in our community association law practice, and our residential and commercial real estate practice has been expanding over the past 12

AL: My primary focus these days involves the various sports activities and interests of my two sons. I coach my younger son's baseball team at the Optimist Club in Cooper City. My older son plays baseball for the Weston Rattlers travel team. Both boys also play soccer, basketball and tennis. As you can imagine, it's a rather large commitment. But I believe that sports are a great outlet for kids, as it keeps them out of trouble, teaches them discipline and how to work well with others, and has a positive impact on schoolwork as well. JCS presents "Silent Victims: The Impact of Marital Conflict on Children" Shalom Bayit, the domestic abuse prevention program of Jewish Community Services of South Florida (JCS), is sponsoring two educational programs one for the general public on Sunday, January 10th, and one for professionals on Monday, January 11th. Called "Silent Victims: The Impact of Marital Conflict on Children," the January 10th event will take place at Temple Emanu-El on Miami Beach starting at 7 p.m. and the January 11th event is at Temple Beth Shalom on Miami Beach from 9 a.m. to noon. Members of the community and interested professionals are invited to attend to find out what they need to know and do to help protect children living in troubled families. As Lynn Lichtman, JCS Shalom Bayit program coordinator, explains, "This is such an important topic because conflict at home can cause the same condition soldiers on the battlefield often get - post traumatic stress disorder. This may have devastating effects on children's
physical, mental and emotional health." Keynote speaker David Pelkovitz, Ph.D., a professor of psychology at Yeshiva University, will discuss how to get children the help they need to overcome the effect of abusive relationships. These programs are presented as a community service by JCS Shalom Bayit and are co-sponsored with the Center for the Advancement of Jewish Education and in conjunction with the National Council of Jewish Women. A suggested donation of $10 for the general public and a fee of $36 for professionals (with CEUs available) will help support Shalom Bayit's domestic abuse prevention programs, which provide confidential support and care to survivors of domestic abuse and raise awareness throughout the community. As seating is limited, RSVP to 305-576-6550 by January 6th. For more information about JCS, visit jcsfl.org

Rehearsal BY PATRICIA C. FRANK Many people begin a new year with resolutions and goals for the year ahead. To be successful and accomplish those goals and maintain those resolutions it is vital to do a few things before you begin. The first step would be to think about what you want to achieve. Is it realistic? Can it be achieved? Be very specific. Then think about what you need to accomplish your goals or resolutions. What conditions have to be in place before you begin? Think about what you can do to prepare. Take time to think about every aspect. Before any new journey you need a roadmap. You need to study the route that you will take. You need to anticipate the roadblocks and plan a route around them. It is also good to have a map because it will show you alternative routes to the same outcome. It will help you focus on the starting point and where you want to go. If you don't know where you are going how will you know when you have arrived. Then visualize yourself actually performing the new behavior. See yourself in your new role. See yourself successfully accomplishing your desires. Allow yourself to feel how happy you will be. Start every
Page 9
10 Strawberry Street Outlet day with that picture in your mind. Do not allow a smidgen of doubt to creep into your mind. Stay focused. Do not associate with doubters and nay-sayers. Banish the negative people and disbelievers from your life. Remember what you think about or believe will become your reality. So protect your self and your goals and resolutions. Sometimes, it is necessary to keep your resolutions and goals a secret. It may be the only way to protect yourself from disparaging remarks and psychological attacks. How you feel emotionally has a lot to do with your success. Avoid anyone who does not have your best interest at heart. Sometimes even the most well intentioned person can say and do things that will hurt you and hold you back. It is also a good idea to practice and rehearse your new behaviors. Get used to saying and doing your new things. Become comfortable in your new situations and roles. Eliminate the stress in your life. Stress does not allow you to think clearly or to visualize and dream. After all, resolutions and goals come from your deepest desires. They need peace and calm to thrive and multiply. You need peace and calm to thrive and be all that you can be. Accomplishing our goals and resolutions will bring you greater happiness. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. AMC SpeedBiz shines bright at Farrey's Lighting & Bath BY LYNN CARROLL The Aventura Marketing Council's monthly SpeedBiz Meeting, North Dade's all-time favorite networking event, recently convened at Farrey's Lighting & Bath where members enjoyed the hospitality of the Farrey's team while browsing the elaborate showroom before jumping in for several rounds of Lightning Biz. Lightning Biz gives participants the opportunity to exchange business cards and short presentations with up to 30 other qualified business prospects. Think of it as Speed Dating for your business! "AMC's SpeedBiz meetings have helped to welcome me into the membership," says Karen Rachles of Custom Spine. "It's an ideal setting because it gives new members like myself an opportunity to meet long time members and exchange information about what we do professionally, so when the need arises, we can do business together." Farrey's Lighting & Bath, 1850 NE 146th Street in North Miami, is celebrating its 85th anniversary this year, and throughout that history has built a reputation as one of the most comprehensive lighting, decorative bath and hardware companies in South Florida. "We're in the business of selling dreams, and making them easier to envision," says Leyane Jerejian, marketing coordinator, Farrey’s. "We have

provided lighting, bath and decorative hardware fixtures and fittings for many South Florida buildings, hotels and luxurious homes. Experience and reputation is key for our brand." From picture lamps to the most extravagant crystal chandeliers, she says, Farrey's Lighting and Bath is the Mecca of design. "Our most recent addition is a collection of contemporary crystal luminaires from Swarovski," she adds: "Farrey's is all-encompassing, so no matter who your clients are or what their particular style is, you can be sure that they will find merchandise that speaks to them." In its two 40,000-square-foot showrooms - one in North Miami and one in Coconut Grove - Farrey's carries hundreds of the most prestigious lines of lighting, high-end bath, cabinet and door hardware, furniture and accessories. "If there is one thing you deserve to have," Jerejian says, "it's a space that captivates you and your guests over and over again. Farrey's makes that happen." Some strength showing in the housing markets
Al Sunshine 4 YOUR MONEY It is not a major signal that home prices are going to start climbing as high as they were before our local real estate bubble burst. However, the latest numbers out of Washington, DC, point out another sign the critical housing markets are seeing new strength here and across the country. At the same time, it’s also potentially bad news for anyone who’s still deciding whether or not to jump in and buy a home or condo. The flip side is sellers may finally be able to hold out for a little bit higher price, if they can play for more time. The latest Federal Home Finance Agency numbers from Uncle Sam shows July residential prices gaining 0.3 percent over June. And that’s a solid gain from March’s probable market bottom. Still, overall prices are down more than 4 per-
cent from July 2008 and off more than 10 percent from its peak in 2007. Closer to home, prices are doing even better. Florida is part of the South Atlantic region and July prices here grew by twice as much as the national average. Regionally, our prices shot up 0.6 percent from June and they finally are seeing steady, positive growth from early summer when prices were still dropping. According to the latest statistics, since January residential prices have shown some steady improvements. And with the residential real estate market improving and prices slowly picking up, the so-called buyers market could soon be ending. Local home sales still are getting a solid boost from that first-time buyer’s tax credit. However, that expires in November. As far as single-family homes go, the great deals and rock bottom low prices available over the summer may soon be gone as the inventory of homes and condos continues to get bought out. Watch Al Sunshine’s 4 Your Money reports Monday-Friday beginning at noon. You may find Al’s blog at <www.cbs4.com/4yourmoney>.

• EDUCATIONAL AND TEEN ADVICE • Toby Rose ASK TOBY What is the best way to judge a college and how do I know if their brochures are telling the truth? I don’t trust beautiful brochures and exquisite websites. The best way to find out about the college is to talk to people who have gone there and, most importantly, visit the campus. Speak to the students that are there. If possible, arrange to spend a weekend and stay for a night in the dorm with some of the students. This can be an eye opener. Many of my students, who were absolutely determined to go to their dream schools, spent the weekend and went to a few classes. After this experience, their dream school was totally off their list. You need to be realistic and realize that despite all of the hype that goes on about getting into college, it really is a serious business. You’re not going away to party and have fun, you are going away to study and prepare for your future. Remember, the people in admissions are selling a product; they’re advertising their college to you and everyone else. Think about it; just the fees for admission are about $5,200 per college. That’s a lot of money. I really want to go to a certain school and I have an upcoming interview, so what is the best way for me to show how much I want to attend this particular school? I always like the word “passionate”, passionate about your school and, hopefully, your upcoming school. Ask as many thoughtful questions as you can and be totally familiar with their website. Do an interactive tour, read all the brochures and talk to students and parents who have attended this particular university. And smile. Let your face light up to the interviewer whenever you are talking about your passion. Don’t be afraid to show how much you really want to get in. Your energy and spirit will show through. And that’s what counts. My parents want me to apply to a minimum of 20 schools. What is your opinion? I have never asked any of my students to apply to more than seven — in some cases 10 — schools. Applying to college
takes a lot of time and energy. At the same time, you may be doing all of your community service or taking the SAT/SAT II Subject Tests. Last, don’t forget you still have school. You still need to keep your grades up during your senior year. I really think that seven schools should do it. Ideally, you should have one or two safeties and one or two dream schools or reaches, as I call them, and some maybes.
What does the term “wait list” mean? A wait list is a group of “in betweeners” who haven’t been denied, but also haven’t been admitted to a particular school. They will be offered admission if the number of enrollment doesn’t meet expectation for the incoming freshmen class. What this basically means is that they really like you, but might not have enough room. My daughter is pregnant and she refuses to talk to me. I really need help. What have been your experiences in this area? This is an extremely personal question and I would be glad to answer personally at no charge. Please email me at <tobyrose19@yahoo.com> or call me at 305-238-7737. I am a junior and have taken Algebra 1 and 2, and Geometry. Since I did not take Calculus, will my PSAT score be affected? And why is the PSAT in 11th grade so important? Absolutely not. The math in the PSAT is Algebra 1, 2 and Geometry. The 11th grade PSAT is extremely important for the kids who want to be Merit Semi-Finalists or Merit Scholars and every state is different in calculating who wins. In Florida, it’s the top half of the 99th percentile starting with the PSAT in 11th grade. Last year, the index was 214 in Florida. In New York, California and Massachusetts, it was 230; Florida ranks 50th in education. We’re not doing very well, but I would not worry about the PSAT. Worry about the SAT at the end of your junior year. Toby Rose is president of Toby Rose’s College Prep. Chevy Equinox is a compact SUV with broad appeal Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS Chevrolet’s re-designed 2010 Equinox SUV competes as a compact, but it has the roominess and many of the features of a midsize vehicle, which should give it an appeal to consumers of just about any lifestyle. The second-generation Equinox draws its exterior design cues from the Malibu sedan and Traverse crossover models, and is available in three trim levels — LS, LT and LTZ. It has the signature Chevy face — a two-tier grille and prominent gold bowtie insignia — with strong fender shapes, a distinctive roofline, wraparound headlights, dual round taillights, a multi-dimensional hood, wraparound rear side glass and a wheels-at-thecorners stance. The base of the windshield has been moved forward three inches for a sleeker profile and improved aerodynamic performance, while the rocker panels are integrated into the doors to make it easier to get in and out. Under the hood there’s a new 2.4-liter, 182
hp direct-injection I-4 engine that delivers 32 mpg on the highway (22 mpg city), a 33-percent improvement over its predecessor (AWD models get 20/29 mpg). There’s an available 3.0-liter 264 hp V-6, also with the fuel-saving direct injection and variable valve timing technology (25/17 mpg). Inside, the Equinox cabin is quiet thanks to noise-absorbing elements built into the chassis, engine compartment and interior. GM’s first application of Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) technology is used on 2.4 literequipped models. ANC uses microphones to detect loud sounds inside the vehicle and sends counteracting sound waves through the audio system’s speakers to ensure a quiet ride at almost all speeds. The interior has numerous storage bins, including an oversized glove box; a closed storage bin in the instrument panel above the center stack, and more closed storage space under the center armrest that’s large enough for a laptop. A “floating” center stack houses many ergonomic comfort and convenience controls. Ice-blue ambient lighting within and surrounding the center stack, encircling the center-console cupholders and within the door pull cups accentuates the cabin. The front and rear seats, which include cloth and perforated leather-trim, are designed for comfort.

Thunderstorms terrify some dogs BY CAROL CARIDAD Vice President, Paws4You Rescue
For many dogs, a thunderstorm is terrifying, even if those dogs are safe and dry indoors. Your dog becomes anxious, clingy and agitated when her high sensitivity to barometric pressure warns her of a coming storm. When the storm hits, she paces, drools, barks at cracks of thunder, hides under things or cowers and shakes. After the storm, she may have trouble settling down; some dogs can be restless for hours, even days afterward. Thunderstorm rumbles can make dogs panic and engage in behaviors ranging from excessive panting to eating through drywall. Desensitization training can calm some of these dogs – but such training takes a while to work. For storm-phobic pooches who need a quicker relief, the following measures can help: See if a dog will eat high-value foods during storms. High-value foods are treats your dog likes so much she will do just about anything to score one. For some dogs it’s a tasty piece of chicken, for others a warm hot dog bite will do the trick. Local dog behavior expert Dee Hoult suggests complimentary therapies such as sprays or diffusers that contain dogappeasing pheromones – similar to the pheromones released by nursing mother dogs. “Having a pheromone plug in, or spraying pheromone on a bandana on putting that bandana on your dog often helps,” says Hoult. “It’s never a bad idea to try spraying your dogs bed with calming pheromones, or even ordering a pheromone diffusing collar that your dog can wear on a daily basis so that when a storm hits your dog is already equipped.” Some common pheromones are Comfort Zone and D.A.P. Hoult also suggests rubbing a dryer sheet on your dogs fur prior to a storm. “Yes, it’s weird, but sometimes it works! Many dogs are irritated by the static building in their fur.” Another over the county complimentary therapy is Rescue Remedy (rescueremedy.com), which can be mixed
Paws4You into your dog’s water. If using high value food and complimentary therapies isn’t enough, there is still hope for the storm-phobic canine. The Anxiety Wrap or the Storm Defender cape are two products that may reduce thunderstorm anxiety in some dogs, but experts suggest acclimating your dog to such products before a storm starts. Log on to <anxietywrap.com> or <stormdefender.com> to learn more. Some dogs are so afraid of thunderstorms that hey need pharmaceutical help to get through them. If your dog is one, your veterinarian may prescribe anti-anxiety medication. “Most vets carry alternative herbal medicines that can lower anxiety,” says Dr. Robert Pane of South Kendall Animal Clinic. But when, as dog owners, do we know when we need to seek medical help for our dog’s behavior? Dr. Pane recommends that you seek help from your veterinarian when a dog is causing physical damage to itself or your property. “We frequently recommend multimodal treatments, meaning that we prescribe a medication to help ease a dog’s anxiety so that it responds better to desensitization programs.” It’s always better to do more than one thing to discourage anxiety, as simply medicating an animal usually doesn’t solve the root of the problem. From calming music for dogs (check out throughadogsear.com) to placing your dog in a dark and quiet room away from windows, there’s a lot we can do to help our dogs through storm anxiety. Visit Paws4You Rescue every Sunday at the PetSmart across from The Falls from 11 a.m.–4 p.m. or at the South Miami Petco on the second and fourth Saturday of the month from 12-4 p.m. At these adoption events, there are volunteers on hand to answer any questions you may have about our adoptable dogs.

Aries - You could get some unexpected good news about a promotion or new job opportunity this week. You seem to have a light about you that is attractive to authority figures. Make use of that charisma to get what you want. Don't be afraid to speak up for yourself. Taurus - You will feel dreamy and idealistic this week and you have the best chance of making solid and lasting changes if you work together cooperatively with others. You are a leader by nature, not a follower, but you are going to learn something of the fine art of negotiation this week.
Gemini - You might find that electrical appliances short out unexpectedly then suddenly and mysteriously seem to fix themselves. You could have strange dreams and unexpected psychic experiences this week as well. Just keep an open mind and you'll learn some amazing things.
Cancer - You will greatly benefit from the company of new companions, even if their strange belief systems leave you a little skeptical. Keep an open mind, explore something new and untested. It may turn out that they are not as odd as they seem to be at first.
Leo - You will be solidifying financial and career gains this week when it dawns on you that you had better make some time for your neglected love life. You will find luck in matters of money, but may have to work at love. There may be travel delays getting from your workplace to your love nest.

Libra - Spiritual barriers are dropping this week, and you have the ability to reach profound and deep psychic or spiritual levels. You may have time to explore prayer or meditation, or take in a class through a spiritual or religious organization. Scorpio - Expect a phone call or letter from an old flame this week. If you are already in a new relationship, you could be thinking about taking things to the next level, and it could be that call that gets your current partner thinking about "settling down". Sagittarius - Expect good news from your office or in a health-related matter. You could soon be looking at a raise, bonus, or the installation of a health-benefit package through your workplace. The weekend chores go smoothly this week and you could be investigating a new investment class.
Capricorn - You have an opportunity to make money out of your home on some kind of craft, hobby or creative business. Your ideas to redecorate your home may be costly, but there could be long-term financial benefit in having a more attractive home.
Aquarius - The high energy continues. You'll have many opportunities to learn new things, go new places and open up your world. Even the "old stick in the mud" everyone has one in the family tree - will come around to your way of thinking. You may have to patiently push one or two to get them going but it will be worth it. Pisces - You are going to be on the telephone a lot this week. Your loved ones and relatives may have shocking news, but the changes that are coming you and your family will welcome with great excitement. You will be passionate, creative and highly verbal this week.
