Texas de Brazil hosts 'espeto corrido' networking reception BY BARI AUERBACH The translation for espeto corrido is the entertaining, continuous service guests receive at Texas de Brazil - introducing "the most incredible dining experience" at the new Brazilian steakhouse now open in The Village of Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach. Texas de Brazil recently hosted an Aventura Marketing Council networking reception for AMC business and community leaders who were among the first to see why the renowned churrascaria is featured in Zagat's "America's Top Restaurants" and has received a Wine Spectator's "Award of Excellence." Leaders from Granoff Enterprises, Aventura Optical, Crowne Plaza Hollywood Beach Resort and Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center were impressed to see the restaurant is almost as big as the heart of Texas - spanning 12,000 square feet with seating for 275 plus three private rooms available for private functions, a bar and lounge and spectacular floor-toceiling wine wall. Friends from Miami-Dade County Public Schools, City of Aventura, Equinox and Take Stock in Children agreed the Brazilian serving style and rustic atmosphere of Texas de

Brazil creates a unique, memorable dining experience. Authentically costumed, sword-wielding gauchos circulating throughout the dining room offer choice cuts of beef, chicken, lamb, pork and sausage - all cooked in the traditional Brazilian churrascaria style. Teams from Aventura Hospital, Allstate, FastCare, Mardi Gras Casino, Minuteman Press, Denise Rubin International Realty and AT&T applauded the "all-you-can-eat" concept, starting with Texas de Brazil's extravagant gourmet salad area displaying more than 50 items including favorites

like Brazilian black beans with pork, imported cheeses, marinated Portobello mushrooms and artichoke hearts. Even after enjoying assorted sides like fried bananas, garlic mashed potatoes and famous cheese bread served tableside, colleagues from Rub Pediatrics, Prudential, Miami Gardens Florist, EWM Realty, Berman Chiropractic and County Line Chiropractic still had room for more Brazilian sausage, chicken breast wrapped in bacon, rack of lamb and picanha -a house specialty. Financial experts from Northern Trust, Coconut Grove Bank, Wells Fargo, JGB Bank, Turnberry Bank and 1st United Bank praised Texas de Brazil's simple, fixed-price dining concept: guests pay a flat rate of $42.99 which includes the salad area, meats and side items, with as much or as little meat as desired, which is sliced and diced tableside by the gauchos. For those with a lighter appetite, the light dinner is available for $29.99 inclusive of all hot and cold

Florida Marlins Community Foundation sponsors Student Connection trip to New World School of the Arts Almost 100 at-risk students were recently treated to a superb performance by their peers at the New World School of the Arts, thanks to the generosity of the Florida Marlins Community Foundation. As part of the Aventura Marketing Council's award-winning program with its eight Dade Partner schools, the Student Connection group enjoys monthly field trips to businesses, organizations and sites that offer the students career insight. "We're always delighted to host the Student Connection each year...it's a wonderful opportunity to not only help spread the word of the outstanding talent we nurture here at the New World School of the Arts, " said Daniel Lewis, Dean of the School of Dance, "but the students also learn about career possibilities in the performing arts." Starting with an African-themed dance featuring costumed dancers and running through classic songs from the 50's and 60's, the NWSA students gave a rousing one-hour performance to an excited and appreciative audience composed of students, counselors and businessleaders from the Aventura Marketing Council, as well as some special invited guests from The Sterling of Aventura, a senior lifecare center. Eileen Glastein of Bnai Zion Foundation , chairman of the Aventura Marketing Council's Education Committee, noted, "This is always one of the favorite field trips of the year for our Student Connection. Our at-risk students are motivated by seeing their peers enjoying school and working hard towards their chosen careers. Our goal with our students is to encourage them to complete high school as they are exposed to careers they may never have thought of before." In the Fall of 2008, Aventura Hospital, under the leadership of hospital CEO Heather Rohan, opened the Gesher Tzedaka Jewish Hospitality Room to provide support services for the comfort of their Jewish patients and families. Founded by Miriam Alexander of the Yehuda Memorial Center Foundation and Efraim Fixler of Gesher Tzedaka, a local nonprofit that assists Jewish families in need, the room has become a welcome addition to the hospital's many amenities for its patients and their families, providing everything from Kosher meals to religious books. Judy Newell, H2U and the Volunteers at Aventura Rabbi Yisroel Brusowankin from the Hospital; Heather J. Rohan, CEO Aventura Hospital; Fixler, Gesher Tzedaka; Rabbi Yisroel Aventura Chabad, one of the hospital chaplains, Efraim Brusowankin, Aventura Chabad had a first-hand experience with the Gesher Tzedaka Jewish Family Room's caring atmosphere and the warm welcome his own father received as a patient. "As one of the chaplains of Aventura Hospital," said Rabbi Brusowankin, " I have had the pleasure of interacting with hospital CEO Heather Rohan on a few occasions. I find her to be a unique blend of professionalism and sensitivity. Under her inspired leadership, Aventura Hospital has become a very welcoming place for Jewish patients and visitors. "The Gesher Tzedaka Jewish Family Room has become a virtual oasis for Jewish patients and visitors, providing vital support services for Jewish patients and their families including kosher food, facilities, Jewish books and CD's, internet access, and a calm and serene setting for a Shabbat family meal or just a place to relax. As a further service to Jewish families, the hospital boasts a Shabbat elevator enabling more people to visit their friends and families on the Shabbat and Jewish holidays. She makes me feel comfortable and appreciated so that I in turn can convey these feelings to the patients and their families. I have also seen her interact with individual patients and convey to them the feeling that they are truly cared for and that their needs and concerns are important to her." "We are extremely grateful to Mr. Fixler and Mrs. Alexander for their warm generosity in dedicating this special room," remarked Heather Rohan, "The Jewish Hospitality Room is not just a gift for our hospital but for all Jewish visitors, observant or not, who seek a quiet place to rest while waiting to see a loved one." The Continental Group: Going green means saving green Whether they are using strategies to reduce utility bills or implementing a recycling program, in this economy communities are finding that going green can also mean saving green. The Continental Group, Florida's largest property management company and The City of Aventura want to show you how. The Continental Group has teamed up with The City of Aventura to host the inaugural Go Green Symposium on Thursday January 28th at 7 p.m., at the Aventura Government Center located at 19200 West Country Club Drive. The Continental Group along with its partners will unveil its Green Community Program, detailing the plans on how it can help transform communities into more environmentally friendly and in some cases LEED certified buildings. "Aventura is the ideal city to launch this concept. We have a great long standing relationship with the city and recognize their passion for building a green community," said Bill Worrall, vice president of client relations and development for The Continental Group. "Done right, we can help communities reduce their carbon footprint. The building will save money, the residents will save money, waste will be eliminated, and our environment will benefit," added Worrall. The Continental Group will work with willing communities and residents in taking them on a sustainable path in anticipation of Earth Day 2010. Through this, communities can benefit from tax breaks, utility savings, and a healthier place to live. Among the green options will be new heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) technology, a switch to natural gas, as well as irrigation features and rain sensors. Additional recommendations include lighting changes and environmentally friendly cleaning products. "The Go Green Symposium is an excellent outreach opportunity for residents and businesses to learn how make their buildings and properties more sustainable while reducing their carbon footprint. This program furthers the City Commission's direction recognizing the importance of being an environmentally responsible City. I would also like to recognize the Community Services Advisory Board for their valuable input in making this program a reality," said Eric Soroka, Aventura City Manager.

Historically Yours BY BOB DIAMOND GRACE AND CALVIN COOLIDGE Grace Coolidge was one of America’s most beloved First Ladies. She was warm, vivacious, an extrovert who endeared herself to others. After graduating from Vermont University in 1902, she became a lip reading instructor at the Clark Institute for the Deaf in Massachusetts, where she taught the deaf children to communicate. Her personality was the perfect complement to Calvin, who was shy, restrained, a man of few words and friends. A friend joked, “Having taught the deaf to hear, she might cause the mute to speak.” Calvin, however, had a sense of humor. According to historian William A. Degregorio, “A typical exchange involved the hostess who came up to him and said: ‘You must talk to me, Mr. President. I made a bet today that I could get more than two words out of you.’ Coolidge replied, ‘You lose.’” Grace taught their two sons how to play baseball, her favorite sport. She often went to Fenway Park, as she was a loyal fan of the Boston Red Sox. She was always on

Calvin’s mind. His only extravagance was buying beautiful clothes for Grace. “When she was away, he lacked the support he needed” often becoming depressed, stating, “I don’t know what I would do without her.” According to historian Carl Sferrazza Anthony, a story that the Coolidge’s took to a Maryland chicken farm illustrated “her sense of humor and earthiness, as well as the teasing repartee between them. As the farmer took the First Lady throughout the henhouse, they came upon a rooster on top of a hen. “Does the rooster do that often?’ Grace asked the farmer in mock-surprise. ‘Several times a day,’ responded the farmer. ‘Tell that to the President,’ the First Lady said, smiling. The embarrassed farmer did as he was told. ‘Mr. President, Mrs. Coolidge asked me to tell you that that rooster does that several times a day.’ Without missing a beat, the president asked, “With the same hen?’ The farmer answered, ‘No, Mr. President.’ With as straight a face as his wife, Coolidge got in the final touché. ‘Tell that to Mrs. Coolidge.’” Sources: William A. Degregorio, “The Complete Book of U.S. Presidents;” Carl Sferrazza Anthony, “First Ladies – The Saga of the Presidents’ Wives and Their Power, 1789-1961.”

Gladys Mezrahi's Indigo Events captures your target market By Lynn Carroll

PROVOCATIVE QUESTIONS FOR PROVOCATIVE PEOPLE

LC: How does Indigo Events differ from most marketing companies? GM: We specialize in tactical event development to help clients achieve optimal results. Events marketing works as an alternative or addition to traditional advertising, because it allows us to create an event promoting services or products that cater specifically to the target audience. We also have a corporate division where we do all kinds of corporate events, such as seminars or training sessions, as small as a private meeting with 2 people or as big as a sales convention of 5,000. Finally, through our social division we stage weddings, bar mitzvahs, quinces and private dinners. LC: Do you offer packaged events? At what point does Indigo get involved in the process? GM: Everything is customized, because every event has its own objective,

mission and needs. For example, we did a bat mitzvah for girl who is into cooking. The invitations were aprons, the dĂŠcor was a kitchen and we brought in a famous chef to make the dessert onsite, there was no dancing but lots of entertainment for all the guests. We integrate the whole event from start to finish. We design the invitations, take care of the RSVPs, book the venue and entertainment, plan the menu, even send the thank-you notes. The client really comes as a guest to their own party-they don't need to do anything and they get to enjoy the party without worrying that things are ok. LC: Everyone's watching the bottom line these days. Isn't it more costly to hire an event planner than to do it yourself? GM: That' a common misconception, but actually we can save them money. We work within the client's budget, and

because we have strong relationship with hotels and other providers we can get discounts that we pass along to our clients. We're doing many things to mount beautiful events and still contain costs. For example, we're creating a whole new line of centerpieces without flowers for under $50. LC: How did you develop the concept of marketing through events? GM: I had my own line of cosmetics for 18 years, and the concept came through that experience. Because I wasn't about to compete with the major brand names through advertising, I created events to bring people into the stores. Indigo Events is located at 20900 NE 30th Ave., Suite 210. For more information, call Gladys Mezrahi at 305-931-2370 or visit indigoevents.net.

Financial Focus

Time to make new year’s financial resolutions BY JONATHAN J. D’OLEO Like many people, you may make some New Year’s resolutions. Perhaps you’ve promised yourself that you’ll visit the gym more often or learn a new language or reconnect with a long-lost friend. All of these are worthy goals, of course, and if you achieve them, you may add new dimensions to your life. But if you want to accomplish other major milestones you may have envisioned — a new home, college for your kids, a comfortable retirement and so on — you may need to set some New Year’s financial resolutions. What type of financial resolutions should you make? Here are a few ideas to consider: • Contribute as much as you can afford to your 401(k). Take full advantage of your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan. Your contributions are typically tax deductible and your earnings grow on a taxdeferred basis. Every time you get a boost in

salary, try to increase the amount going into your 401(k), but at the very least, contribute enough to earn the employer’s match, if one is offered. In 2010, the contribution limit for 401(k) plans is $16,500, or $22,000 if you’re age 50 or over, although both these limits may increase if they are indexed for inflation. • “Max out” on your IRA. Even if you have a 401(k), you’re probably still eligible to contribute to an IRA. A traditional IRA grows tax deferred, while a Roth IRA’s earnings are tax free, provided you’ve had your account at least five years and don’t start taking withdrawals until you’re 59-1/2. (Your ability to contribute to a Roth IRA is based on your income.) You can fund your IRA with virtually any type of investment. In 2010, you can put in up to $5,000 to your IRA, or $6,000 if you’re age 50 or older, although, as was the case with your 401(k), these limits may go higher if they’re indexed for inflation.

Relay Baton BY PATRICIA C. FRANK Every parent is acutely aware of what they have passed on. They can see it in the distinguishing features of their children. They can see the physical similarities. They can also see some of the other traits that they have passed on; someone’s musical ability, or someone’s sense of humor. In addition, they pass on character traits. It is possible that they are not as aware of these traits as they are of the physical attributes. Character traits are directly absorbed by children from their parents on a daily basis. Moment to moment the child is learning about honesty, courage, perseverance, compassion, kindness and patience. They are learning how to respect themselves and how to respect others, among many, many other things. Parents often say, “You are just like your; Father or Mother or Aunt or Uncle,” These statements can be compliments or they can be insults. Children can tell if it is a good thing or a bad thing to resemble other family members. Parents also pass on their attitudes, and their philosophy of life. They pass on their beliefs about whether the world is a safe place or a dangerous place

and about whether people are good or bad. They pass on positives and negatives. Even if you are not a parent there are qualities, attitudes, and beliefs that you pass on every day to those you meet and interact with. Think of a baton in a relay race. A baton is a hollow, short; stick-like cylinder carried and passed on to another person who carries it and passes it on and so it continues from one person to another. Although the baton is usually empty, you have the opportunity to fill up your baton. You can fill it with the things that you want to pass on. You can fill it up with your best attributes and characteristics. Put in respect and regard, faith, love, hope and encouragement. You are passing on things anyway so why not make an effort to pass on the best of yourself. You are touching many lives every day and you can make those lives better and make the world a better place. Don’t forget to pass on your baton with a smile. You can supercharge it and super size it The person you pass it on to will feel your spirit and your goodness like an electric charge and that will definitely change their moment and their day and even their life. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. She can be reached at 305-788-4864, 212-308-0309.

Real estate bottoming out in South Florida?

Al Sunshine 4 YOUR MONEY It’s a multi-million dollar question that hits every homeowner in the pocketbook and will help decide when our stalled construction industry can get back to work. Has the local real estate market bottomed out and when will we start to see prices rising again? Coral Gables Financial Planner Matt McGrath says, “It’s looking like a bottom is imminent, but with the current level of buyer’s interest it’s unlikely in the near-term that prices may increase again.” Since the start of the recession, residential property values have dropped by about 45 percent. And since the height of the market in 2006, the average residential property in South Florida has steadily dropped from about $300,000 to about $166,000 last fall, according to the National Real Estate Service,

Zillow.com. Single-family homes and condos saw dramatic drops in actual selling prices, according to local real estate experts. Even though inventories are down, thanks to deep discounts, cheap financing and those income tax credits through April, home prices are not expected to see any major new growth until the foreclosure problem stops flooding the market with cheap properties. Yet, despite the expected next wave of foreclosures around South Florida, the Real Estate Association of Miami and the Beaches reports that home and condo prices are starting to stabilize. So what about all the new expected foreclosures? Happily, they are being snapped up much sooner than over the summer. So the good news is they may not be on the market dragging down property values much longer. Because of the strength of foreign investments here, South Florida now is considered a national leader for improving real estate sales. Watch Al Sunshine’s “4 Your Money” reports Monday-Friday, beginning at noon. You may find Al’s blog at <www.cbs4.com/4yourmoney>.

IDF Boot Camp comes to Aventura

BY BARI AUERBACH Sweating is a must; swearing is encouraged; losing weight is a requirement! Taught by a former Israeli drill sergeant from the Israeli Defense Forces, the renowned IDF Boot Camp program is now being offered in Aventura by the circle on Country Club Drive. Burn 1,000 calories in a group setting with great music, brand new equipment and cool people who want to get a great outdoor workout that you can’t get anywhere else! IDF Boot Camp was founded by Omer Cohen, a former Israeli Special Operations Officer – now bringing his experience training Israeli military elite units to “civilian” fitness enthusiasts. The IDF Boot Camp program includes exercise components designed to build body strength and core stability while improving cardio vascular stamina, balance, coordination and flexibility. “IDF Boot Camp is based on your own abilities – so regardless of what your current fitness level is or what shape you’re in, we can help you get the results you want,” Cohen explains. “Our personal and certified instructors are there to push you whenever you need it and make sure that you are doing the exercises correctly.” Certified with the National Council on Strength and Fitness, Cohen has been a personal trainer for many years, formerly affiliated with exclusive spas in Aventura,

Golden Beach and Bal Harbour. He is also a triathlete, an avid marathon runner and well- trained in Krav Maga – the Israeli one-on-one self defense technique used by elite Israeli military and counter terrorism units. “I’ve developed a more friendly technique for my clients who are interested in Krav Maga training,” he said. IDF Boot Camp programs are held Monday nights at 7 p.m. by the Aventura circle. “This way, you’ll be able to burn the weekend’s calories right after you come back from work on Monday night,” Cohen said, emphasizing his philosophy: “You make the commitment – I’ll do the rest!” Today, health experts are describing obesity as “the fasting growing public health challenge the nation has ever faced, crossing all socio-economic groups.” But while fitness oriented goals top most people’s list of New Year’s resolutions, not everyone wants to invest in a gym membership or has the motivation to keep going even if they join. Cohen feels the IDF Boot Camp is a great alternative to mainstream gyms, offering individual and group assignments that will “keep you motivated in a fun environment while burning fat and toning your body…IDF Boot Camp will kick your butt into shape!” IDF Boot Camp is $15 if you pay online at www.IDFBootCamp.com or $20 cash. Toyota 4Runner has more power, better fuel economy Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS The Toyota 4Runner sport utility vehicle has been around since 1984 and it has been a hit with American consumers from the start because of its four-wheel-drive versatility, go-anywhere ability and the comfort and utility of a passenger car. After 25 years, four generations and more than 1.5 million sales, the all-new fifth-generation 4Runner is more rugged and athletic, and has more power and better fuel economy. The redesigned interior and unique cargo area make the latest 4Runner smarter, more comfortable and even more versatile. The design of the new 4Runner is more rugged than its predecessor, with large diameter wheels and tires to improve off-road performance and enhance the vehicle’s truckbased characteristics. Aluminum alloy wheels are 17-inches in diameter on SR5 and Trail grades and 20 inches on the Limited. The rugged new design utilizes a combination of Toyota’s classic boxy form and pro-

gressive styling. All 4Runner grades have rugged new bumpers and wider shoulders, with new headlight and taillight systems that yield better nighttime performance. The square front fender flares meld with a muscular profile that links with a beefy and square rear bumper and back door. The 4Runner combines the toughness and durability of body-on-frame construction with multi-use design. It’s taller, wider and longer for 2010 and is available in three models — Limited, SR5 and Trail. The Limited and SR5 grades add to the muscular design with special premium touches that include a chrome-plated front grille insert, fog lamp bezel and front bumper molding. Front and rear overfenders and side skirts are colorkeyed, while chrome plating is on the side molding, roof rack and rear bumper. The Trail grade is designed to maximize off-road performance with a high ground clearance and an array of functional upgrades. It may be distinguished with a unique hood scoop, unique 17-inch wheels, black outer mirrors, front and rear bumper guards, and a dark smoke treatment on the head and tail lights. Turn signals on SR5 and Limited V-6 grades are incorporated into the outside mirrors, along with puddle lamps. Drivetrain configurations include rear

wheel 4x2, part-time 4x4 and full-time multimode 4x4 with a locking center differential. All 4x4 models are equipped with a 4.0-liter V-6 mated to a five-speed ECT-i automatic transmission. The 4x2 models come with either a 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine mated to a four-speed ECT automatic or a 4.0-liter V-6 with the five-speed ECT-i automatic. Optional third-row seats allow for seating of up to seven adults. EPA-estimated mileage improves to 17/23

mpg for the 4x2 and 17/22 for 4x4 models. Pricing on the 2010 Toyota 4Runner ranges from $27,500 for the SR5 grade 4x2 with a four-cylinder engine to $39,800 for the Limited grade 4x4 V-6.
