Residence Inn by Marriott in Aventura hosts Wounded Warriors Soldier Ride K-Kids from VAB Highland Oaks Elementary hold 'send-off' celebration For the third consecutive year, over 70 wounded veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were hosted by the Residence Inn by Marriott in Aventura through the Wounded Warrior Project. This project provides tangible support for the severely wounded, getting them on the road to healing, both physically and mentally. One of their methods was to create the Soldier Ride as a rehabilitative cycling event designed to challenge them. Students from VAB Highland Oaks Elementary, led by their principal Dr. Kim Rubin and K-Kids Director Edie Fine, came to the Residence Inn at 7 a.m. recently, laden with gifts for the soldiers. Home-made cakes and cookies, banners and signs filled the front courtyard of the hotel as the students offered the sweets to all the soldiers. Bill Gorman, interim general manager for the hotel, said, "We are so proud of these men and women who made such sacrifices for our country...we are honored to have them stay with us each year." Dr. Rubin added, "On behalf of all our K-Kids and their parents who are here today to wish you well on your journey, I just want to say 'thank you for all you have done.....we appreciate you!" Julie Millar, RN, named associate chief nursing officer at Aventura Hospital Aventura Hospital is proud to announce the promotion of Julie Millar, RN, to the role of associate chief nursing officer. Millar has served for the past two and half years as the director of emergency services at Aventura Hospital. During her tenure, she has worked closely with the Medical Director, Dr. Roman Skylar and with MiamiDade Fire and Rescue to implement new protocols that allowed the average wait time at Aventura Hospital's Emergency Room to be reduced to less than ten minutes each month and to provide STENT intervention to heart attack patients within 60 minutes or less. Julie Millar has also helped to oversee the introduction of a new induced hypothermia program called Code Ice. The procedure involves rapidly reducing the body temperature of patients suffering from cardiac arrest in order to save brain function. In addition, Aventura Hospital recently became the first and only Primary Stroke Program in Dade County to earn the American Stroke Association / American Heart Association Get With the Guidelines - Stroke (GWTG - Stroke) Gold Plus Performance Achievement Award. The award recognizes Aventura Hospital's commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of stroke care by ensuring that stroke patients receive treatment for at least 24 months according to nationally accepted standards and recommendations. The hospital's rise in ranking from bronze status to gold status is among the fastest in the nation. As a Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) officer, Julie Millar has worked to improve patient satisfaction scores throughout the hospital. The ER's overall patient satisfaction score has risen to the top 25th percentile of the entire HCA hospital chain, which consists of 161 hospitals nationwide and abroad, and the ER has been successful with 100% of its ER core measures, a Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) measured quality initiative for 2009. These accomplishments all occurred during the Emergency Room's busiest season to date. In 2009, Aventura Hospital's Emergency Department saw an increase in volume of 25% over 2008. "Julie's record speaks for itself," says Aventura Hospital CEO Heather Rohan. "Our ED is recognized as one of the best for all our HCA sister facilities. Julie will undoubtedly serve the hospital and our community well in her new role as associate chief nursing officer."

Aventura Worldwide Transportation, also known as Aventura Limo, has started chauffeur services to the Broward Performing Arts Center and Adrienne Arsht Center. "Our fleet ranges from Lincoln Towncars for parties of two to buses for groups. Or how about a limousine to celebrate a special occasion?" Israeli ambulance donated in honor of Rabbi Edwin Farber The deep-rooted and enduring connection between local Jews and the State of Israel will be accentuated as friends, neighbors and the community will celebrate the gifting of Ilsa Rooz's tenth fully equipped Magen David Adom lifesaving ambulance in honor of Rabbi Edwin Farber from the Beth Torah Benny Rok Campus. The ambulance, which will soon be shipped to Israel, will be part of a fleet of 800 emergency vehicles that vigilantly respond to every call to care for hundreds of thousands of patients each year to save lives in Israel. The community is invited to the dedication which will take place on Sat., Jan. 30th during Shabbat morning service at the Beth Torah Benny Rok Campus, 20350 NE 26th Avenue, beginning at 9 a.m. This is an unprecedented honor for the synagogue and the community, with the ambulance doors bearing the name of Rabbi Farber and the Beth Torah Benny Rok Campus. This is the first time that an ambulance is being dedicated in honor of a living rabbi. Paul Hirschson, Deputy Consul General of Israel will make a special presentation to Ilsa Rooz and the Shabbat service for that morning will
include participation of the children of Beth Torah: Shabbat Mishpacha, Hochberg Preparatory, and Scheck Family Religious School. When asked about how he felt about this great honor, Rabbi Farber responded, "The Rabbis tell us; "Whoever saves a single life - it is as if an entire world has been saved". Ilsa Rooz has now dedicated ten Magen David Adom ambulances! These "angels on wheels" are saving countless lives in Israel, brining relief to the suffering and hope to those who fear they are alone. Is there any greater act of Chesed (compassion) and Tzedakah (Charity)? I can't think of one. Congratulations to Ilsa and mazel tov to the people of Israel on the gift of two new ambulances. And thank you to the American Friends of Magen David Adom who help us perform this great mitzvah." American Friends of Magen David Adom (AFMDA) supports the lifesaving efforts of Magen David Adom (MDA), which is mandated by the Knesset to provide Israel's pre-hospital emergency medical needs including disaster, ambulance and blood services. Shelby Construction Group, a custom division of the 28-year-old residential development specialist Shelby Homes, is addressing the needs of today's residential real estate market with construction, renovation and remodeling services on both residential and commercial property, says Sandra Morgareidge, senior director of business development. "We're getting back to the customer's end of the business," she says. Shelby Construction takes the frustration out of construction and renovation jobs by assuming responsibility for jobs from A-Z, Sandra Morgareidge, Shelby including everything from permitting to selec- Construction tion of material and finishes. Instead of trying to hire and coordinate an army of subcontractors themselves, Morgareidge says, property owners can hire Shelby Construction to serve as a client's single point of contact. "That's a very big deal right now for several reasons," she says. "First, there are phenomenal deals available in the residential and commercial market. People have the ability to buy their dream home or investment properties and still have the ability to renovate them as they like. "For buyers who are not full-time residents, Shelby's turnkey services are particularly attractive," says Morgareidge. "We're affiliated with several top designers in South Florida," she says. "Additionally, with the market still sliding, many homeowners are opting to fix up what they have rather than move. "Whether you or someone you know has raw land, an empty lot, a tear-down, an existing home that needs some TLC, or a new or unfinished home or condo," Morgareidge says, "Shelby Construction Group has the reputation from Palm Beach through South Beach for delivering exquisite masterpieces of award-winning design and construction." Life in the City BY BARI AUERBACH ‘Law & Order’ In Aventura, we’re expected to abide by municipal laws – but there may be a need to institute some deterrents for “outlaws” you may have seen around town: Stealing Spaces: A deterrent for someone who steals your parking space could be being forced to endlessly circle the mall until finally finding an SUV getting ready to pull out that’s being loaded up with strollers and packages. Then, just when the outlaw gets ready to pull in, someone else steals the spot proving karmic debt can be worse than a fine! Identity Theft: If trying to look just like certain celebrities was outlawed, there would be no need for deterrents like…Only being able to get a mini-straw for a Frappuccino when sipping with Angelina Jolie lips - or being pressured by a salesgirl to squeeze into tight skinny jeans when often being mistaken for JLo from behind.
Dating Fraud: If there were hefty fines for fraud, outlaws on dating sites might not have to write things like: “I could tell you that I love puppies and I’m the greatest thing since sliced bread - and when we meet, it could all be a lie!” Distraction Infractions: If outlaw exhibitionists known to cause whiplash by wearing next to nothing in public were asked to pay chiropractor bills, that could spark one of the biggest “cover ups” since Watergate! Oblivious Loitering: Drivers who mysteriously stop in the middle of the road for reasons like being immersed in a cell phone conversation may be “oblivious” outlaws – but perhaps a good deterrent would be calling a tow truck to have the car removed while they’re still in it. Highway Robbery: It really would be a crime if your hometown highway exit didn’t lead to the City of Aventura…after all, what law-abiding citizen would want to be robbed of the chance to enjoy life in one of the country’s safest cities?!

It might be time to simplify and regionalize local government, for accountability and transparency's sake.

Enforcement and investigations are a joke, and wrongdoers get punished with wrist-slaps, not criminal sanctions. Too many questionable practices and conflicts are tolerated. It's time to toughen up. Never Pay Another Expensive Repair Again
Jan. 27 - Feb. 2, 2010
The Team Approach BY NICHOLAS GNAD
Ly Espinol
2009 is now in the past, and what a year it had been. Financial markets have seemingly rebounded from critical lows. Housing markets are holding in a state of limbo. Job markets are struggling to recover. The only certainty that has come from this recent past is that for most people, their financial profile has changed. This was a very scary time for many, and for many, it continues to be. There has never been a time like now where it is so vitally important to take the time to do a complete review of your financial position. It is also more important than ever to bring the advisors you are using together. There are several very distinct areas of consideration. For many, they include: A tax advisor or CPA. Perhaps there is someone who manages the investment portfolio. There may be an attorney who provides the legal advice. Then there are the insurance professionals who make sure if and when the non-planned for events happen, the plan remains stable. Two of the biggest mistakes to avoid are, first, trying to coordinate each piece of
the pie yourself. Often a lot of time and money is spent on the services of each advisor. Unfortunately, very often the full potential of the overall plan is never realized, or worse, the plan flat out fails because each advisor had no idea what the other was recommending. For a plan to work, it is very important for each advisor to know the planning being done by the others so that the efforts can be coordinated in a way that best meets the objectives. The second big mistake I see all too often is asking one advisor for advise that should be given by another. For example, asking your accountant for legal advice, or asking your attorney for insurance advice. For 2010, I suggest begin putting together your team of advisors. Take the time to introduce them to each other. Finally, have faith in your advisor’s recommendations. If you find yourself questioning the opinion of an advisor on your team to someone in an entirely different profession, perhaps you should consider a new advisor relationship. I wish you much Happiness and Health & Wealth in the New Year! Statehood BY PATRICIA C. FRANK What state do you live in; Florida, New York, Kansas, Hawaii or maybe Alaska? The state you live in has a lot to do with your everyday life. Your state can be cold or hot or rainy or sunny. Where you live affects how you live and how you feel every day. If the circumstances and situations of where you live do not suit you then you can move physically to another place. You can control the circumstances of your life. If you cannot leave permanently, there are still things that you can do to make your life better. In addition to your physical location in a state, you also live in a State of Mind. That state can be one of anxiety, fear, doubt, depression or guilt. If you are anxious; you are worried about the future. If you are fearful than you dread every moment. If you are full of self-doubt then you lack self-worth. If you are depressed you are full of unexpressed anger. If you are guilty, than you will punish yourself constantly. If you perpetually live in one of these states, you are living in a tortured state. It is imperative for your health and happiness that you move to
another state of mind. A good state to be in is a State of Grace. A state of grace is a state of being. It is polished, poised, dignified, striking and distinguished. A state of grace has an elegance about it. It has a noble feel to it. It is an elevated state of being. You exude good will towards yourself and others. Everything flows easily and smoothly. You are charmed and charming. You have compassion and empathy. A state of grace enhances everything you do. Another good state to be in is a State of Joy. Everything brings you delight. You are happy and lighthearted. You are extremely pleased by everything and about everything and with everyone. Another good goal is to be in a State of Peace. This is a calm mental, emotional and psychological state. You have a deep and profound understanding of life at its deepest level. You are filled with serenity and inner harmony. If you cannot live in the physical location or state of your choice you can still live in the State of Mind of your choice. You can live in the State of Grace, Joy and Peace. Here’s how you can help Haiti’s earthquake victims
Al Sunshine 4 YOUR MONEY It’s a very natural reaction for so many of us: We witness the horrible stories coming out of Haiti after a massive earthquake leveled the capital and we want to help the victims. For South Florida, Haiti’s latest tragedy is even that much closer to home because of our close ties to the country and our own thriving Haitian-American community. Our first thought might be to find clothes, food, medical supplies and toys and take them down to a collection site to send to Haiti’s survivors. That’s to be expected. However, the horrible reality is that transportation into Haiti and around that country may be very difficult for now. Military aid and relief supplies aimed at immediately saving lives will be a priority. So what’s needed now and what can we do about it? Charity groups like CBS4’s Neighbors 4 Neighbors and the American Red Cross are
asking for financial donations. They need the money to get not only pre-packaged emergency food, water and medicines, but they also need the funding to make sure it gets where it’s needed the most. Mounting private relief efforts costs money. No doubt, we’ll be hearing a lot more over the coming weeks about charity drives for Haitian relief. But remember, charity donations should go directly to the victims as soon as possible. That’s why so many charity groups are now asking for financial donations and not extra food, water, medicine or clothing. By Florida law, all charities have to be registered with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. You can check out Florida charities on line at <http://app1.800helpfla.com/giftgiversguide/> The Federal Trade Commission has put out national charity scam warnings for years and offers guidelines to make sure your donations actually end up with the victims of disasters, and not scam artists. For information about making your donations count, visit online at <www.ftc.gov/charityfraud>.

20% OFF BY BARI AUERBACH Even if you have to sit behind your computer for hours a day at work there are ways to strengthen and even tone muscles without ever leaving your desk…And now, instead of just spending tons of time online for social networking, you can get fit while you sit by logging on to a myriad of websites focusing on diet, exercise and nutrition support. Tightening While Typing: Tighten your abdominal muscles for thirty seconds at a time. Do the same with your glutes - clench for thirty seconds then release. Build Strength: Sit on an exercise ball instead of a chair. The ball will help you maintain your posture while in front of the computer. Good posture is known to help build better core strength. While sitting with your feet on the floor you can also work your calves. Making sure your feet are planted in front of you. Raise your heels, make sure you are on the balls of your feet and then lower then back to their starting position. Do this several times, making sure each time you can feel the burn in your calf muscles. Be Flexible: Using your head and chest, shrug your shoulders up and down. Repeat a few times until you notice the difference in tension in your body. Neck rolls are also helpful. Relaxing your shoulders let your head tilt downward, rotating your head in a circle at least five times. Stretch your legs out in front of you lifting one at a time off the ground, hold the
first leg in place for two seconds, then repeat with the other leg. Visit Fitness Sites: Here are some of the most reliable resources: NutritionData.com is one of the best online resources for finding the complete nutritional profile of virtually any food you can think of. Calder gets ready for Grand Opening BY LEE STEPHENS As South Florida prepares for the onslaught of activity in Miami during the months of January and February with the “Big Games” at Dolphin Stadium on Jan. 31 and Feb. 7, the community also eagerly awaits the Grand Opening of the all-new Calder Casino & Race Course.just north of the stadium in Miami Gardens. Calder first opened as a horse racing track back in 1971 and has welcomed locals and visitors alike every year since then. It’s been one of the most successful pari-mutuel franchises in the state’s history. While horse racing and simulcast wagering have been its mainstays - Calder is a Churchill Downs Company - Calder is getting ready to enter the world of casino gaming for the first time with the opening of its slots facility in late January. Calder, Churchill Downs, and city officials ceremoniously broke ground on the new facility in June 2009. An ambitious construction schedule was deployed in order to meet the January 2010 opening, all while racing continued at the track, horseplayers made their bets, and a new card room - Studz Poker Club - was built and launched in October. The Calder team dubbed the project, “Racing into the Future.” The new Calder Casino, to open soon, is a Las Vegas-style, single-story facility and boasts three new restaurants. Gaming enthusiasts will love the layout of the facility, from the broad, boulevard-like entrance and porte cochere with valet service, to the immediate reward of the casino floor upon entry, to the convenience of the three new restaurants, a VIP room and an exclusive High Limit slots parlor. Everything is right where gamers want it. And what they want are the games over 1,200 of them at Calder. All the major manufacturers will be represented, including WMS, Aristocrat, IGT, Bally, Konami, Atronic, Speilo, AGS, Ainsworth, and AC Coin. Games like Star Trek, Wheel of Fortune, Wizard of Oz, Jaws, Slingo and Monopoly are some of the most popular in the industry and will be available at Calder. “Royal Match 21” (electronic blackjack) also has great appeal as it is new to the marketplace. And, coming in the spring will be the new Kentucky Derbythemed slot machine made by Aristocrat and licensed by Churchill Downs. Just in time for racing’s Triple Crown. The Calder team has made significant
efforts to market the property as a “triple feature” destination: a place to play slots, horses, and poker. In what has become a busy gaming marketplace, it’s a unique selling point that they hope pays off. Calder becomes only the second parimutuel facility in Miami-Dade County to offer slots, but remains the only Thoroughbred track in the county to boast a casino. Horse racing still draws its loyal customers at Calder; the racing season is eight months long and the track offers year-round simulcasting. But now the property conveniently located on the county line is poised to attract slots players from both counties - Miami-Dade and Broward - as well as part of the tourist market. That’s also what makes the timing of the Grand Opening in late January so attractive, with all the visitors in town for the events at neighboring Dolphin Stadium. While the Calder Casino does not have a specific “theme,” the Calder team wanted to integrate elements of their horse racing heritage into the casino. For example, two of the new restaurants were named with a nod to racing: Front Runners (a quick and economical “grab ‘n’ go”) and Twin Spires Tavern (a casual and sporty atmosphere with Latin/Caribbean influences, named in recognition of the famed Twin Spires of Churchill Downs). (The third restaurant is Tropical Gardens Buffet, offering a “plethora of tempting choices.”) Guests will be able to make wagers on live and simulcast racing in the slots facility, too, and a number of television monitors are dedicated to the wide-range of racetracks offered. A schedule of exciting casino promotions is being developed for slots enthusiasts, and gamers are encouraged to join Calder’s player-reward program, the Twin Spires Club. The Twin Spires Club rewards players with “points, prizes and privileges” at Calder for whatever they play: slots, horses or poker. For those who wish to sign up for the Twin Spires Slots Rewards card ahead of time, Calder’s web site has an online registration page at www.calderracecourse.com/loyalty <http://www.calderracecourse.com/loyalty> <http://www.calder racecourse.com/loyalty> . New members will automatically receive casino mailings and offers, including an invitation to the Grand Opening in January. As an added bonus, new members will receive a free 2009 Kentucky Derby Glass and $10 in free Twin Spires play.

Corvette adds Grand Sport model to 2010 lineup Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS Grand Sport is one of the legendary names in Corvette racing history, the dream of renowned GM engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov. His dream led to the production of five special prototype Corvettes in 1963, but the project was later shelved, following GM’s agreement to stay out of manufacturerbacked auto racing. The five prototypes were based on the 1963 Corvette design and were hand-assembled under Duntov’s direction. While the cars looked like production models, they really were built for racing and shared little with the assembly line versions. Although never officially sanctioned by General Motors, the five Grand Sport prototypes were raced extensively in the 1960s by “private” racers who had strong contacts within Duntov’s circle. Today, all five prototypes are accounted for and listed among the most valuable in the Corvette collector market.
Chevrolet offered a limited-edition Grand Sport production model in 1996 to commemorate the five originals and mark the end of the C4 platform in Corvette production. Now, an all-new 2010 version combines Corvette’s LS3-based powertrain with wide-body styling, a wider track and a racing-bred suspension. It’s available with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. The LS3 6.2-liter engine is rated at 430 hp and 424 pounds-feet of torque with the standard exhaust system. An optional two-mode exhaust hikes the power to 436 horses. The Grand Sport replaces last year’s Z51 package and delivers better handling thanks to wider wheels and tires; revised shock, stabilizer bar and spring specifications, and specific gearing. It all adds up to a 0-60 performance of four seconds and an EPA-estimated 26 mpg on the highway. Grand Sport coupe models equipped with the manual transmission are uniquely equipped for race track competition, too, with a dry-sump oiling system, differential cooler and a rearmounted battery. The Grand Sport also includes: • Wider front and rear fenders, including specific front fenders with integrated Grand Sport badges;
Chevrolet has returned the storied Grand Sport name to the 2010 Corvette lineup, joining the ZR1, Z06 and standard coupe and convertible models.
• Z06-style front splitter and tall rear spoiler; • Functional brake ducts and extra cooling; • Unique 18-inch front and 19-inch rear wheels; painted finish standard and chrome finish optional; • Large 275/35ZR18 tires in front and 325/30ZR19 tires in the rear; • Z06-size brakes, including 14-inch front rotors with six-piston calipers and 13.4-inch rear rotors with four-piston calipers; • Specific manual transmission gear ratios, and • Specific rear axle ratio on automatic-
equipped models. A paddle-shift six-speed automatic transmission is available, while an optional Heritage package adds iconic front fender hash marks offered in four colors, as well as two-tone seats with Grand Sport embroidery. Base price on the 2010 Corvette Grand Sport is $58,540.

WEEKLY HOROSCOPES Aries - Your career is a little confusing to you right now. You need a little time to sort out the direction you want to go in the future. You may be exploring a lot of different options, or deciding between two or three different job offers. Take your time.
Libra - You're going to feel a bit disconnected and drowsy this week - it's not a good week for energetic activity, rather one for laying around lazily soaking up the sun where that is possible - or the rays from the TV tube or computer monitor where it is not.
Taurus - You and your mate could be dis-
Scorpio - A loved one may ask you to travel or to take on some paperwork chores and this may interfere with existing plans. Use your intuition when dealing with an unexpected paperwork project. You may have a resource available that you are overlooking.
cussing travel and education this week when it dawns on you that you are like putty in their hands. It doesn't hurt to compromise every now and then, and this week you will get more bees with honey than vinegar anyway. Giving in could be the shortest route to peace after all.
Gemini - Shared values and spiritual beliefs with friends and associates are challenging topics right now. You could blow away someone's treasured preconceptions by simply being honest about your ideas. That's likely to be controversial and the response, argumentative. Cancer - If you are a parent you may be called upon to act as a leader in a "dispute resolution" scenario. Someone should have their sling-shot or skateboard taken away, and it is up to you to play the "heavy". If it is any consolation, they'll get over it.
Leo - This is not an auspicious week for the beginning or initiation of new relationships. Whether you are meeting someone new, or are considering taking a next big step in an existing relationship, this is not the week to make big changes. Just relax and enjoy things as they are.
Virgo - You have a strong need to get out and play this week, but personal responsibilities or challenges with your children could keep you hopping from one chore to another. Late in the week you could have a healing chat with your significant other.
Sagittarius - Someone could come over seeking financial help in escaping an abusive, perhaps even potentially violent situation. If this rings true for you in any way, check into local community resources, find out what might be available at the Red Cross. Capricorn - Sudden changes or a crisis in your workplace could throw you into the spotlight, or into an unexpected leadership role with tremendous potential for advancement. But you may be your own worst enemy right now. You need to have the kind of faith in yourself that others have in you.
Aquarius - You may find that it is challenging at times to put thoughts and feelings into words. You seem to be tripping over your tongue a lot. But that is okay as long as you keep that self-deprecating sense of humor handy. People will find it charming. Pisces - You know what two people really need to do to get their act together, but the hard part is that if you speak up, you will become the problem they can fight against together. Even if your advice is sought, discretion may be the better part of friendship this week.
