BY LYNN CARROLL The next time you hold a get-together, be sure to schedule Coffee Brake, a fully stocked mobile van that brings great coffee and coffee products to you. The concept is the brainchild of Miami-Dade County Comm. Sally Heyman, who says her coffee shop on wheels, which took to the streets on April 1, 2009 is getting the communites attention. Coffee Brake serves espressos, lattes, cappuccinos, cafe con leche, and other great coffee products, fresh brewed au naturel or in hazelnut and fresh vanilla varieties. The special blend created for Comm. Heyman by a roaster in the state of Washington "tastes really great when it's hot, and it's also good when it's cold," she says -- depending on the weather, iced coffee is also an option. She recently expanded her product line to include Bliss Brake - smoothies served in a range of flavors that includes coffee, mocha, mango, strawberry and mixed berry. "People are calling to ask whether I can come to an event they're catering," she says. "For businesspeople, it's an inexpensive way to do something nice for their employees. University of Miami home games at Sun Life Stadium." It was the popularity of the "drive up" coffee shops in the Northwest that gave her the idea to try it in South Florida. Rather than choosing a stationary site, she went mobile. "I wanted a good product that was easy to access and inexpensive," she says. "My van can be parked anywhere, and I really enjoy the social interaction." There's just one problem -- so many opportunities, so little time. That's why Comm. Heyman plans to franchise the Coffee Brake concept. For your next break, call 305-798-2601 or visit online at mycoffeebrake.com

VIEWPOINT Change Is Tougher than Hope Shouldn’t ‘Local’ BY JOHN CAVANAGH On the campaign trail, Barack Obama electrified Americans with his bold call to transform despair into hope, and voters elected him in a landslide. Democratic candidates for Congress rode his broad coattails to large majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate that his party hadn’t held in a generation. The stage was set to transform hope into change, for jobs, health care, climate change, and many other fundamental challenges. A year into the Obama administration, with giant obstacles blocking those important changes, many Americans feel more frustrated than hopeful. Following careful analysis, the Institute for Policy Studies— which I lead—gives Obama a “C-minus” grade for his first year in office. But his administration can learn from these obstacles to guide the country toward positive change in 2010. The Wall Street-driven economic meltdown that started in the waning months of the 2008 campaign is the biggest challenge to the change Obama campaigned on. More than eight million Americans have lost their jobs since the crisis began, according to the Economic Policy Institute. Try feeling hopeful without a job. Obama added to his woes right from the start by selecting a cabinet which, with only a few exceptions, didn’t believe in bold change. Take Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner. The Associated Press obtained Geithner’s schedule last October and learned that he spent hours on the phone daily with Wall Street barons, instead of with the small entrepreneurs and workers who form the backbone of this economy. Change would be hard for anyone to achieve as long as Washington is virtually owned by Wall Street bankers and giant corporations. Too many members of Congress owe their elections to that largess. Take this revealing example: Obama agreed to cut wasteful military spending on extraneous items such as a new fleet of presidential helicopters. Members of Congress, worried about job loss and corporate anger, put some of the money back in to keep the program alive. If we look at the three major battles of 2009, corporate interests blocked significant change on all of them. Wall Street

stymied any reform that would regulate the Wall Street casino that brought our economy to the brink. Now its lobbyists are fighting tooth and nail against a consumer financial protection agency that would safeguard ordinary people against predatory lending. On health care, the majority wants all Americans covered—and they want some version of a government health plan to compete with private plans. It does look like the Obama administration will win some small but important health-care reforms, but they will fall short of where the majority wants to go. And bills that would address climate change by making major U.S. companies pollute less were watered down. None have become law yet. The Obama administration nevertheless did take a few strong steps in the right direction. Just three weeks into office, Obama orchestrated the largest economic recovery spending bill in history. It sent hundreds of billions of dollars into new jobs and key safety-net programs. Much of that money has kept Americans from slipping through the cracks, with a massive expansion of food stamps and a big increase in unemployment benefits. Obama should think about how some of his predecessors successfully channeled public anger into meaningful change at the top. Many of the social protections that have helped working people, the elderly, and people of color in this country were passed in the mid-1930s under Franklin Delano Roosevelt, or during the mid-1960s under Lyndon B. Johnson. In both cases, well-organized Americans created strong pressure that overcame entrenched interests to win change. In Obama’s first year, the Americans who mobilized to elect him largely stayed home. Millions did so because they are out of work and devoid of hope. Others thought change would come easily. For the change this nation desperately needs–a transition from a Wall Street casino to a new economy that fulfills people’s needs–Americans must get off their couches and 2010 and come together to confront corporate interests. --

John Cavanagh is the director of the Institute for Policy Studies, a think tank that transforms ideas into action for peace, justice, and the environment and recently released the new report Barely Making the Grade: Obama’s First Year.

Business Be Local? BY JIM HIGHTOWER In Alice in Wonderland, Humpty Dumpty declares: "When I use a word, it means what I choose it to mean, neither more nor less." Well, get ready to tumble down the semantic rabbit-hole again, for giant corporations are trying to co-opt the meaning of one of our important words: "local." It's important because small businesses across the country have created a very positive, grassroots economic movement, based on being local producers, providers, and marketers. Over 130 cities have "local business alliances," with 30,000 businesses enlisted. The movement has been phenomenally popular with consumers who like the flavor and personality of local enterprises, and the fact that their consumer dollars stay in their community. So, now other businesses want in on the action—such outfits as Frito Lay, Wal-Mart, Starbucks, CVS, and Barnes & Noble. These global brands are using TV ads and other promotions to hawk their massproduced stuff as "local." The sprawling

Barnes & Noble chain, for example, cheerfully asserts: "All bookselling is local." Hellmann's, a division of Dutch-owned Unilever, is claiming that its mayonnaise is local because most of its ingredients come from North America. That isn't local—it's loco! An executive of a public-relations outfit that’s helping promote this perversion explains the supposed logic behind the corporate power play: "There is a belief that you can only be local if you are a small and authentic brand. This isn't necessarily true," she says. "Big brands can use the notion of local to their advantage as well...It's a different way of thinking about local that is not quite as literal." Wow—wouldn't Humpty Dumpty be proud of her? To connect with the genuine local business movement, contact the Institute for Local Self-Reliance: www.ilsr.org. -Jim Hightower is a radio commentator, writer, public speaker, and winner of the 2009 winner of the Nation/Puffin Prize. But if you will not take this good Counsel, and persist in thinking a Commerce wit the Sex inevitable, then you

should prefer old Women to young ones.” Among Franklin’s reasons were the following: • “Because in every animal that walks upright, the Deficiency of the Fluids that fill the Muscles appears first in the highest part: The Face first grows lank and wrinkled; then the Neck; then the Breast and Arms; the lower Parts continuing to the last as plump as ever: So that covering all above the Basket, and regarding only what is below the Girdle, it is impossible of two Women to know and old one from a young one. And in the dark all Cats are grey, the Pleasure or corporal Enjoyment with an old Woman is at least equal, and frequently superior, every Knack being by Practice capable of improvement. • Because the Sin is less. The debauching a Virgin may be her ruin, and make her for Life unhappy. • Because the Compunction is less. Having made a young Girl miserable may give you frequent bitter Reflections; none of which can attend the making an old Woman happy. • Lastly. They are so grateful!” Source: “Fart Proudly, Writings of Benjamin Franklin You Never Read in School), Edited by Carl Japikse

JGB Bank hosts Frank Supovitz, NFL Special Events 'First and Tenth - Pro Bowl and Super Bowl Together in South Florida' Cont’d from page 1 "We've served the South Florida community since 1957 and Aventura since 1999," Brookes said. "JGB is among the highest-rated banks in the country for safety and soundness consistently achieving high ratings from independent bank rating services. In these financially challenging times, it's good to know JGB is poised for significant, conservatively-managed growth and ready to serve the needs of corporate and personal clients." He also announced the opening of their newest branch in Miami Beach in February. Taking the podium, Supovitz was greeted by Miss Florida USA 2010 Megan Clementi, who officially "knighted" him Sir Frank of the Gridiron, a/k/a Mr. Super Bowl. Sharing winning Super Bowl stats, Supovitz explained, "The Super Bowl brings in $500-$600 million of economic impact. We expect to see 100,000 people coming into the market who would

not normally be here just to be at the Super Bowl, Pro Bowl or one of the many celebrations. Beyond fans from all over the country and thousands of media reps from around the world, over 200 countries receive the Super Bowl telecast, so about a billion people will be watching South Florida." Addressing the likelihood of South Florida hosting future Super Bowls, Supovitz emphasized, "To be competitive with new stadiums coming online in new markets, it will become more and more important to make sure you're on the cutting edge as well. There's a 'new normal' out there. We're all feeling it and understand we have to deliver more to our companies, our clients, our partners and our customers." Before the two- minute warning, Supovitz encouraged fans to tune into a new truTV series going behind the scenes to reveal some of the NFL's "drama and goofiness" starting the day after the Super Bowl on Monday at 10 p.m. To contact JGB Bank's Aventura branch, phone: 305-931-6883 or visit jgbbank.com

Glass ceiling BY PATRICIA C. FRANK The fixed glass ceiling that people often speak about bumping into and being unable to rise above does not really exist. It is an assumption and a myth. The glass ceiling is really a glass dome that can be opened. All you have to do is push the button and the dome slides open. The glass ceiling that you think exists in your own life is really just a sliding dome also that you can open. The button that controls the glass ceiling is the knowledge that you have the power to open it. Your real power comes from your awareness of your power. If you are aware you are cognizant of something. You have knowledge about it. You believe it. In your life, there are no solid glass ceilings. There are no restrictions, no boundaries and no limits. If you think there are, just push the button and you will see everything open to you. In addition to your awareness of your power, you also have to be conscious of it. To be conscious of something is to know and recognize it. No one else has to give you the power or the permission to be, or to do, or to think whatever you wish.

The greatest asset you have for achieving awareness lies in your ability to become conscious of your thoughts and to control your thoughts. Become aware of everything that is happening in the moment. Pay attention to what you are thinking and feeling. Do not let your mind wander or create scenarios from the past. Do not let it dwell on failures or negative thoughts, doubts or fears. Do not let it race ahead to the future with concerns and anxieties about what might happen. Make a deliberate effort to bring your thoughts back constantly to the present moment. When you are conscious of what you are thinking you acquire the power of awareness. It is important to check on yourself through out the day so you can make instant corrections and come back to yourself and to the moment. Before you press the button to open the ceiling you have to believe that you deserve what you want and that you are worthy of having it in spite of everything in your life, past or present. You have to believe that anything and everything is possible. It doesn’t have to make sense or be reasonable or logical or practical or even probable. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. Most school cafeteria not complying with state law

Al Sunshine 4 YOUR MONEY Key Biscayne dad Julian Wortelboer worries about the food his sons get in their Key Biscayne Community School cafeteria. “They bring their own food from home because we heard about the cafeteria had roaches and things going on in the cafeteria, dirty plates and things like that,” said the father of 5year-old twins. For more than a decade, I’ve reported how state health inspectors routinely find sanitation problems at local schools. Several public school cafeterias were closed temporarily over the past few years after health inspectors found rat and roach infestations inside the kitchens. So how are our public schools doing this year? I checked out some recent inspection reports at the Miami-Dade Health Department and saw numerous, mostly minor, sanitation citations. But I also found that inspectors recently issued violations for an infestation of roaches in a cabinet outside the kitchen at Van Blanton Elementary School. The head of the Miami-Dade Health Departments’ Sanitation Program, Samir Amir, explained the reasons for the report,

saying it basically asked the schools to exterminate live roaches they found in cabinets. Thanks to our “Cruddy Cafeteria” investigations, state lawmakers back in 2008 ordered all public schools to publicly post their inspection reports inside schools and on the Internet. Amir explained, “As a parent, you need to know the quality, how the food is prepared where your children eat, and to make sure conditions meet health and safety standards.” Unfortunately, because the state law doesn’t specify where the reports are posted, in most cases they are in the back of the cafeteria where most parents can never see them. That’s why the Internet posting requirement is so important for parents. So, how are local school cafeterias doing when it comes to meeting state and federal sanitation standards in the making of our kids’ school meals? I visited about a dozen schools around South Florida to check out their inspection reports. I found in almost all cases, the school sanitation reports are not being posted where parents can easily find them. In fact, in all but one case, school officials refused to even show them to me. And that’s a violation of both state and federal law. Incredibly, from what I found, nobody’s enforcing the new law. Because the Health Department doesn’t have the regulatory authority to cite a school for not posting its sanitation reports online or in the school office, those violations are not enforced. In fact, Amir confirms, “I am not aware of anybody checking.” When Key Biscayne Community School opened for the year, 500 cartons of spoiled milk

were found in the cafeterias’ refrigerator. It turns out that the refrigerator was unplugged when school ended last May. The school found the problem and reported it to the Health Department. The spoiled milk was ordered destroyed. However, I couldn’t find the sanitation report in Key Biscayne Community School’s office or on its website when I checked it out several months ago. So what’s the Miami-Dade school system got to say? Penney Parham runs the School Lunch Program for Miami-Dade and says, “When you have to deal with a handwritten carbon copy, that’s what the principals are given, so it’s difficult to put it electronically.” She does confirm the state statute. “The inspection reports are to be posted in a visible area and on the school website,” she insisted. “It is done on a handwritten form and then photocopied, scanned, faxed and deciphered…and it causes a few extra steps to actually being updated electronically.” But principal Yolanda Valls doesn’t seem to have any problem at Hialeah’s Mae Walters Elementary School. She posts a copy of the health report in the main office and on the Internet for parents. As it turns out, she was the only school official in Miami-Dade and Broward who showed me a copy of the latest cafeteria inspection report. “It makes them comfortable, especially when they see it is satisfactory, that we are doing the right thing,” Valls explained. Most parents I spoke with don’t even know about their right to see the schools’ health reports.

As a result of my CBS4 I-Team investigation, Congress may soon start cracking down on schools nationwide. U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz now wants to make sure those inspection reports are available to any parents who want to see them. The Broward mom wants our investigations entered into the Congressional Record and played on Capitol Hill. The Broward Democrat plans on introducing legislation this fall strengthening parents’ rights to see school inspection reports and disciplining schools that fail to publicly post the information where parents can find them online or inside the schools’ main offices. “Without your reporting on this, without your dogged determination, there’s no way we would be at this point to know we needed to change the federal law because there’s been no light shed on this other than your reporting,” she told me. Despite problems posting inspection reports, Health Inspectors say local schools are now doing better meeting state and federal sanitation standards than they did several years ago. There haven’t been any major food-borne illnesses at any South Florida public schools this year. Unfortunately, both Broward and Miami-Dade school officials continue to refuse to allow CBS4 News inside their school cafeterias when Health Inspectors go through them looking for violations.

Protect yourself when shopping online BY KATHERINE FERNÁNDEZ RUNDLE

Miami-Dade State Attorney Online shopping has become a popular way to purchase items without the hassles of traffic and crowds. However, the Internet has unique risks, so it is important to take steps to protect yourself when shopping online. Why do online shoppers have to take special precautions? The Internet is convenient for attackers to find ways to access your personal and financial information. Attackers who are able to obtain this information may use it for their own financial gain, either by making purchases themselves or by selling the information to someone else. Three common ways that attackers target online shoppers are: *Targeting vulnerable computers — Take steps to protect your computer from viruses so that an attacker is unable to gain access to your computer and all of the information on it. It is also important for vendors to protect their computers to prevent attackers from accessing customer databases. • Creating fraudulent sites and email messages — Unlike traditional shopping where you know that a store is actually the store it claims to be, attackers can create malicious web sites that mimic legitimate ones or create email messages that appear to have been sent from a legitimate source. Charities may also be misrepresented in this way, especially after natural disasters or during holiday seasons. Attackers create these malicious sites and email messages to try to convince you to supply personal and financial information. • Intercepting insecure transactions — If a vendor does not use encryption, an attacker may be able to intercept your information as it is being transmitted. Protecting yourself: • Use and maintain anti-virus software, a firewall, and anti-spyware software — Make sure to keep your virus definitions up to date. Use a legitimate anti-spyware program to scan your computer and remove any of these files. • Keep software, particularly your web

browser, up to date – Install software patches. Many operating systems offer automatic updates. • Evaluate your software’s settings — The default settings of most software enable all available functionality. It is especially important to check the settings for software that connects to the Internet (browsers, email clients, etc.). • Do business with reputable vendors — Make sure that you are interacting with a reputable, established vendor. Verify their legitimacy before supplying your personal or financial information. Locate and note phone numbers and physical addresses of vendors in case there is a problem with your transaction or your bill. • Take advantage of security features — Passwords and other security features add layers of protection if used appropriately. • Be wary of emails requesting information — Legitimate businesses will not solicit information through email requesting that you confirm your purchase or account information. • Check privacy policies - Make sure you understand how your information will be stored and used before providing personal or financial information. • Make sure your information is being encrypted — Look for indications that your information will be encrypted (SSL, a URL that begins with “https:” instead of “http:” and a lock icon in the bottom right corner of the window). • Use a credit card — Unlike debit cards, credit cards may have a limit on the monetary amount you will be responsible for paying if your information is stolen and used by someone else. Try to minimize damage by using a single credit card with a low credit line for all of your online purchases. • Check your statements — Keep a record of your purchases and compare them to your bank statements. If there is a discrepancy, report it immediately. Katherine Fernandez Rundle has been the Miami-Dade County State Attorney since 1993 and was recently elected to the board of the National District Attorneys Association. She may be contacted by calling 305-547-0100.

Random questions from a cluttered mind BY KELLY CRAIG

They say that as women hit a certain age, we should expect a few sleepless nights. Whether it’s worrying about our kids out with the car or too much caffeine during the day, there are going to be times when a little shuteye is simply impossible. Such was the case for me last night. As I lay there, my eyelids peeled open on high beam, a few random questions crossed my mind. I thought I might share a few, and ask, “Am I the only one who wonders about such things?” Why is the second toe on my right foot breaking away from the pack of other smaller piggies and teaming up with the big toe? Was there a foot fight I wasn’t aware of and they all decided to pick sides? There is now a big v-shaped gap between my little Rockettes, as if they are stuck in a constant Vulcan greeting. Meanwhile on my left foot, everyone seems to be standing toe-to-toe on equal footing. Ladies, am I the only one who is experiencing this agony of da feet? The inventor of Pez candy recently passed away. I wonder how many times during his life did wise guys want to tilt his head backward just to see if a giant candy brick would pop out of his throat. Anyone? Every time I look in the mirror, I wonder who invited my mother over. Girls? I wonder if animals can experience shame. Over the Christmas break, we visited my father who lives in Maryland. As he looked out at his beautiful backyard, I was sure I was about to witness the first-ever human implosion simply because he spied a squirrel about to partake in some of the seeds he used to fill the bird feeder. “Damn squirrel, get away from my feeder! You should be hibernating anyway!” I wonder if the fuzzytailed rodent felt the same embarrassment I felt when I was 12 and he caught me taking one too many peppermints from the candy jar one night. “Step away from the candy. You should be in bed

Life With kelly anyway!” My face was redder than the Swedish Fish. What are those fine little cracks that I’ve discovered running up my front teeth? Why am I so fascinated with them that I can stare at my mouth in the mirror for a good 20 minutes before my jaw starts to hurt. The cracks remind me of those craze lines that are starting to appear on my antique bone china and a really old oil painting that hangs on my wall. I guess the operative words are “antique” and “old”. That’s the common thread between all three of us. Ladies, I wonder if our bras are as happy as we are when we take them off at night. When you consider the job they do for 18 hours straight, they’ve got to be exhausted. In fact, when I was getting dressed the other morning, I could swear I heard my Playtex murmur, “Please, lady, give me just 10 more minutes. I swear I’ll wake up, just a few minutes more.” Anybody with me on that? I guess the only other item of undergarment that has it worse than the bra would be the athletic supporter. I don’t even want to go there. Other late-night inner questions: Does 24’s Jack Bauer think of me in the same way I think of him? Would Russell Crowe lose all of his well-documented rage if I gave him a nice soothing massage? Who invented that new toenail clipper with the magnifying glass and mini-light? It even traps the clippings. Can you say genius? Finally, I wonder if I’m the only one who wonders weird things. I wonder if you’ll email me and let me know. Oh well, at least I’m glad I don’t have somnambulism. I’d rather have insomnia and wonder, than sleepwalk and wander. Goodnight, Jim-Bob. Eat This…Drink That…

MASTERS OF ORGANIZATION

Vegetarians Need Good Food, Too When I was just 14 years old, I had an awful experience with a piece of veal. It was so bad, that not only did I swear off of all kinds of meat, but I decided fish, chicken and anything else with a face was off limits too. I took it so far, I couldn’t walk down the meat aisle of the supermarket without feeling ill. This was back in the early ‘80s, way before it was cool to be a veg. There was no PETA, no Edamame, and worst of all, no real enlightened culinary scene. No one knew how to feed me! First, no one believed (as per the ubiquitous words of my mother, “Okay, so you don’t eat meat. A turkey burger won’t kill you.” My response, “Yes, it might). And if they did believe, they could only prepare “the veggie plate”, boiled or steamed carrots, potatoes, broccoli, zucchini, and maybe red cabbage. Sure vegetables are wonderful things, but vegetarians need protein, too. Eating at home wasn’t as bad. I could cook with tofu, seitan, and soy, but then, it was even tough to find the ingredients. Flash forward. Since those days, the heath and culinary scenes have expanded and grown up significantly. Soy and its non-meat brethren have come into their own (think Edamame, SILK Soy Milk, soy nuts, veggie burgers, etc. to snack on…). Good and good for you. Tofu and Seitan are flavored like duck, hot dogs, or other meat products and in general, vegetarian has grown into a cuisine, not a burden. So where in the local restaurant scene can one go for a fabulous vegetarian meal? Let’s start with Houston’s, which offers an amazing veggie burger platter for lunch or dinner. Juice & Java (20335 Biscayne Blvd. 305.466.2233) has a variety of sal-

ads, organic pastas, crepes, and great meal replacement shakes. It is not pure veg, but has many great and healthy offerings that’ll suit the bill. The Big Squeeze (West Dixie Hwy, North Miami Beach, 305. 935-9544) and Granny Feelgood’s (20475 Biscayne Blvd # 11, Miami, 305.935.5345)are much the same?each offers fresh and healthy vegetarian (often organic produce) and nonveg meals, salads, juices, baked potatoes, and more. Great little “joints” to frequent when ou’re looking for a bite and not a “night”. Julio’s Natural Foods Restaurant (1602 NE Miami Gardens Dr, North Miami, 305-947-4744), in the same plaza as LA Fitness, screams “healthy”. From a variety of flatbreads and baked potatoes (with soy cheese, yum!) to veggie platters and quinoa specialties, Julio’s is inviting and casual, ideal to eat in or take out. Here Comes the Sun (2188 NE 123rd St, North Miami, 305-893-5711) is one of North Miami’s staples. It’s been around for years and years, and with good reason?the down home food and atmosphere make people happy. Righteous Raw Salad, Jolly Green Salad, Grilled Tofu, famed The Hot One and Veggie Melts are only a few of the highlights. Do not miss the sweet potato “discs” or you haven’t truly experienced. But for those who are truly seeking out the best meatless cuisine around, Sublime (1431 N. Federal Hwy., Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33304, 954-615-1431) is a must. It’s a bit of a drive, but worth the trip. From Fire Roasted Artichokes and BBQ Tartlets (meatless) to sushi (fishless, of course), pizza, and a “steak” sandwich, this place can convert even the biggest meat and potatoes man.

SBA loans keeping Beth Herdegen busy at Gulf Coast Business Finance BY LYNN CARROLL For real estate and small business financing, the first person to see is Beth Herdegen at GulfCoast Business Finance. Herdegen brings more than 20 years of experience to her job as vice president of commercial real estate and Small Business Administration lending with GulfCoast located at 1835 NE Beth Herdegen, Miami Gardens Drive, Business Finance Suite 403 in North Miami Beach. Since she launched her career in 1988, she says, she's assisted hundreds of small business firms with SBA 504, 7a and commercial loans. As an authority on SBA loans, Herdegen says, she's been very busy lately. "SBA programs are alive and well. There are funds available." As a certified development company (CDC), Herdegen says, GulfCoast Business Finance can make landing the SBA portion of a SBA 504 loan easy. "We participate with many of the first mortgage banks," she says. "With an SBA 504 loan, 50% comes from the

bank, 40% from the U.S. Small Business Administration and 10% from the borrower. In essence, it represents 90% financing for owner-occupied commercial real estate. It's a better value than a conventional loan." The list of property types that can be financed in this way is extensive. "We do many medicaloffice condos," she says, "as well as retail, wareGulf Coast houses, gas stations, hotels, child-care centers and assisted living facilities. There are some very good deals these days for office condos." The loan will also cover owneroccupied office buildings. Right now, Herdegen adds, there's a federal stimulus package waiving fees on SBA 504 and 7A programs. Herdegen, a Miami Beach native, is chairperson of the South Florida SBA Lenders Group, which represents most lenders doing SBA business in the region. "There's a lot of opportunity in South Florida," she says. For more information, call 305-932-3434 or visit gulfcoastbiz.com

2010 Volkswagen GTI marks sixth generation Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS The all-new 2010 Volkswagen GTI marks the sixth generation of the versatile hatchback sports car and, after almost three decades on the road, it continues to be a favorite with American consumers and driving enthusiasts around the world. With a redesigned exterior, including a more aggressive front end, cleaner side profile and sleeker hatch area, the GTI continues with its sporty nature. At the same time, new interior enhancements provide control and comfort for both the driver and passengers. The 2010 GTI is offered in both two-door and four-door models and both have numerous styling cues from the original Mk I. The front end starts with the hallmark black honeycomb grille with the GTI badge affixed on the passenger side. The distinct red stripe outline flows into the new angled teardrop headlight housings, with High Intensity Gasdischarged Xenon headlights as an option. The lower front fascia cooling duct is blacked out and positioned between two

halogen fog lamps. A more streamlined profile continues to the rear, with subtle black side skirts running partially along the car’s lower edge. To the rear, new taillights are integrated into the quarter panels and hatch, and include smoke-red brake lenses and clear reverse and turn-signal lenses. Red running lights blend into the updated rear bumper and the diffuser has special cutouts for the chrome-tipped, split dual-exhaust. A bodycolor duckbill spoiler sits atop the rear hatch, which houses a third brake light. The GTI comes standard with 17x7-inch alloy wheels and all-season performance tires, but can be upgraded to larger 18x7.5inch wheels. Under the hood, there’s a 2.0-liter 200 hp 16-valve DOHC turbocharged and intercooled four-cylinder gasoline engine (21/31 mpg), with FSI direct fuel injection and maintenance-free hydraulic lifters. It has an advanced, fully electronic management system that combines drive-by-wire throttle control and FSI direct fuel injection to cut back on emissions, while increasing overall fuel efficiency and power. With the standard sixspeed manual transmission, the GTI notches a not-too-shabby 0-60 mph clocking in 6.8 seconds and has an electronically limited top speed of 130 mph. The GTI rides on a fully independent,

European-tuned suspension with McPherson struts, with lower control arms up front complemented by a tubular anti-roll bar to keep the front wheels planted, especially in the corners, and connect to an all-aluminum subframe. The track-stabilization steering roll radius cuts back on body roll in tight turning situations, and has a more direct steering ratio for improved driver feedback. Keeping the car settled at the rear without sacrificing passenger comfort, a four-link independent setup with the springs and shock absorbers positioned apart from each other are matched with a separate sub-frame and

another tubular anti-roll bar. The sport-tuned arrangement comes with an added benefit — increased cargo space — by allowing for a larger rear hatch opening. Helping the GTI to head into the corners with ease is an electromechanical power rack-and-pinion steering system. Base price on the VW GTI is $23,290. Breast Cancer Guidelines and the new Health Insurance Bill BY CONGRESSWOMAN DEBBIE WASSERMAN SCHULTZ The breast cancer screening recommendations that came out last month from the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) generated a lot of confusion for women. As if the recommendations and the confusion weren’t enough, there were and still are people who deliberately used the USPSTF guidelines to distort pending health care legislation. This willful misrepresentation, for the pure purpose of scaring people, not only is unethical, it also reveals the weakness of the opposing side’s viewpoint when they are forced to lie to try to win an argument. By now we all know that the USPSTF set off a firestorm of controversy when they basically told women age 40-50 that they didn’t need routine mammograms. Just days after the USPSTF recommendations were public, the Secretary of Health and Human Services, Kathleen Sebelius, came out and made clear that the recommendations of the U.S. Government weren’t changing, and that the USPSTF findings were contrary to those of the National Cancer Institute, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid. That should have been the end of it. But the story gets more complicated and unfortunately more political. American women who have private health insurance, myself one of them, were very concerned by a statement from the spokesperson for the association “America’s Health Insurance Plans,” that most insurance companies “look to the task force as the standard” when determining coverage. In other words, what was set up to be an independent advisory panel to the government, could possibly determine coverage for people with health insurance. This isn’t because of some law; this is simply a policy decision by insurance companies to generally follow USPSTF recommendations. Women across America were at the same time confused by the guidelines and scared that their insurance company might no longer cover routine mammograms for women under age 50. Indeed, women would be left to the mercy of state laws to determine whether or not insurance companies would be mandated to provide routine mammograms to women in their 40s. In some states women would be protected by state law, in other states they wouldn’t. Clearly this was yet another example of how our patchwork of state laws related to health insurance can leave people vulnerable and without coverage. So for women age 40-50, or women

over age 75, today’s system leaves the insurance company as the final arbiter of whether or not you will receive coverage for your routine mammogram… assuming you even have coverage right now, and 47 million Americans don’t. The USPSTF guidelines were written into the House and Senate health care legislation to provide a MINIMUM level of coverage, but left the ultimate decision up to the Secretary of Health and Human Services to determine whether additional benefits should be added to the USPSTF recommendations. In the pending health care legislation, the Health and Human Services Secretary’s determination that there would be no change in mammogram policy would stand, and women age 40-50 would be covered. But this fact matters little to Republicans who continue to blatantly misrepresent our legislation, claiming that women would lose their coverage under the pending health insurance legislation. Either the people making these claims can’t understand the text of the legislation, or they are lying about what’s in the legislation to scare people into opposing health insurance reform. They tried this line of attack before with talk of fictitious “death panels,” and now they are trying to scare people about mammograms. Don’t be fooled by someone who has to lie to you to try to win an argument. I know I’m not. Maybe the people doing this seek to distract us from the fact that 45,000 working age Americans die every year because they lack health insurance? Or maybe they seek to distract from the fact that under the current system, people with a pre-existing condition can’t change or lose their job without losing coverage? Or maybe they seek to distract us from what Otis Brawley, the Chief Medical Officer for the American Cancer Society said in his recent testimony before the Health Subcommittee: “We also know that lack of health insurance can be deadly. A recent study by the Society found that uninsured breast cancer patients are more likely to be diagnosed at a later stage of diagnosis and have a lower survival rate than women who are privately insured.” Women are dying today because they don’t have the coverage to treat their cancer, or are afraid to go to the doctor to have that lump in their breast examined because then they’ll have a pre-existing condition. That is a fact, and that is unconscionable. When most girls turn sixteen, they look forward to a big birthday bash – but when a beloved dog named Basia recently celebrated her sixteenth year – her owner, Nancy Rand, hosted a festive Sweet Sixteen party that doubled as a fundraiser – with the greatest gift going to the Humane Society of Greater Miami. Rand, a long-time Aventura resident, decided to mark the milestone sixteenth birthday of Basia, an adorable Chow Chow, by celebrating with family and friends at Café Café in the Waterways, a popular community gathering place, where Basia is a regular “customer.” “We make daily visits to the Waterways and Basia’s favorite place is Cafe Café,” Rand said. “After strolling the marina and getting thirsty, she walks herself into Cafe Cafe, looks right up at the counter and the girls know Basia’s waiting for ice water…She’s known as the ‘Waterways dog’ and has friends young and old.” Sharing the story of how she was originally united with Basia, Rand recalls, “It was sixteen years ago on an early Sunday morning in the Aventura Mall. I’d visit [the former] Animal World to play with the puppies…That morning there was a magnificent Chow Chow puppy - so white and fluffy in the window. After one hour of holding this precious puppy, I said, ‘I’m not leaving this store without her’ - and that’s just what I did.” Since Rand feels her life has been enriched in so many ways thanks to pet ownership, she wanted Basia’s party to benefit the Humane Society of Greater Miami and highlight the “Adopt-A-Pet” program - dedicated to placing every dog and cat in their care into a loving home and to promoting responsible pet ownership and spay/neuter programs. A guest at the party, Allison Nash, Humane Society Ambassador, explained there is also a “Match-A-Pet Program” designed specifically for people willing to wait for a specific purebred, a mix which looks like a purebred or a dog of a specific age, size or weight. Dogs and cats that are either purebred, close to being purebred or in high demand because of their size and/or looks are put into the Match-A-Pet Program. These pro-

files are matched against each potential adopter’s application on file. Then, the best matches are called in order according to the date adopters’ applications were approved. Those interested in being in the MatchA-Pet Program are invited to visit the shelter and fill out an Adoption Application. Applicants are strongly encouraged to continue coming to the Humane Society of Greater Miami shelter while waiting as very often, adopters find a perfect fourlegged companion differing from what they originally requested. By visiting the website humanesocietymiami.org, you can also see photographs of dogs and cats currently available for adoption And so, as well-wishers helped Basia blow out sixteen candles, Rand exclaimed, “It’s with pure pride and joy that I’ve shared the story of the best sixteen years of my life with Basia while helping to raise funds and awareness for the Humane Society - and encouraging others to experience the many rewards of pet ownership.”

The Humane Society’s Soffer and Fine Adoption Center is located at 16101 West Dixie Highway in North Miami Beach. For more information, phone: 305-696-0800.

Are our culinary habits killing us? BY DR. PATRECE FRISBEE

Owner, SoBe Well Would you like to get out of fast food pileups and hop on the expressway of good nutrition? Then you need to think “outside the box.” Eating away from home when you’re in a time crunch does not automatically mean a trip to the Golden Arches for a super-sized combo meal. The term fast food generally refers to restaurants that sell quick, inexpensive takeout food. Now, even supermarkets offer several choices, many of them nutritionally superior to fast food and it doesn’t take any more time than a five-car wait at the drive-thru. It is possible to eat healthfully in the fast food lane. However, it may take some extra effort to get enough of the fruits, vegetables, and lean protein your body needs. Another challenge is to limit the amount of saturated fat and trans-fatty acids. Choose broiled or grilled food over fried foods and skip the heavy sauces and cheese. These often contain more fat than the protein itself. Fast food doesn’t have to be fat food.

Health There are more low-fat, low-calorie balanced meal options available now. Ask to see nutrient information at your favorite fast food restaurants. Careful food choices can make a big difference. Here are some tips for making hearthealthy choices with fast food: • Skip the mayonnaise or special sauce. A Burger King broiler with mayo has 530 calories and 26 grams of fat. A Burger King broiler without mayo has 370 calories and 9 grams of fat. • Order it grilled or broiled not fried. A McDonald’s Chicken McGrill without mayo is 340 calories and has 7 grams of fat. • A nine-piece McDonald’s Chicken McNuggets has 430 calories and 25 grams of fat. • Hold the cheese. Wendy’s Cheeseburger kid’s meal has 320 calories and 13 grams of fat. Wendy’s Hamburger kid’s meal has 270 calories and 10 grams of fat. • Use light or fat-free dressings.

Subway’s creamy Italian dressing, 1 tablespoon is 65 calories and 7 grams of fat. Subway’s Italian fat-free dressing, 1 tablespoon has 5 calories and 0 grams of fat. • Order smaller size burgers. Burger King’s hamburger has 320 calories and 15 grams of fat. Burger King’s double whopper with cheese has 1,010 calories and 67 grams of fat. • Order a baked potato instead. Wendy’s plain baked potato has 310 calories and 0 grams of fat. Wendy’s Great-Biggie fries has 570 calories and 27 grams of fat. • Quench your thirst. Have a bottle of water instead of a soft drink. It’s easy to make hormonally correct choices at a fast food restaurant. Fortunately, fast food restaurants always have protein — unfortunately much of it is high fat. So do yourself a favor and choose the chicken. The secret to balancing a meal at fast food restaurants is to know when to stop adding carbohydrates. The following are just a few hormonally correct, balanced fast food meals: • Jack in the Box - Chicken Caesar salad (dressing on the side). • Burger King - Broiled chicken salad, BK Broiler (no mayo).

• McDonald’s - Grilled chicken salad deluxe, McGrilled Chicken Classic. • Wendy’s - Chili 12-ounce Grilled Chicken Sandwich. • Taco Bell - Light Chicken Soft Taco, Steak Soft Taco. The best fast food meals can be found in your supermarket. Simply grab a bunch of pre-cut vegetables and a bag of pre-washed salad. At the deli, get a quarter pound of low-fat protein, such as chicken, tuna, or turkey. Add the low-fat protein to your precut vegetables and salad, top it off with some monosaturated olives and you have a hormonally correct, balanced fast food meal. It may be a little bit more expensive than your high-fat combo meal but aren’t you worth it? The time crunch is most likely here to stay. However, all that’s needed is a little planning to get on the fast track to a balanced nutritional lifestyle. Do you have a wellness related issue you would like to resolve? Send your questions to Dr. Patrece Frisbee at <drfrisbee@sobewell.com>. Patrece Frisbee is the author of Back to Basics With Balanced Nutrition. She may be contacted by calling 305-598-6767.

talent could help you sort out some of your financial issues. If you are offered any sort of financial partnership this week, examine the fine print carefully. There could be hidden caveats buried in all the legalese.

Gemini - One of your friends has something of the bohemian artist energy about them. This person is big on alternative movies, music and theater, and you can learn a lot from them. If you are still single, there may be potential for romance. This artsy person is not as coldly intellectual as they seem!

Cancer - The office is tense and uncertain and for a change, you really long to escape it. You will have an opportunity to partake in some recreational activity, and you do need to get away from the rat race. An idea will come to you while you are relaxing or enjoying yourself that solves a major problem.

Leo - You may find that a lecture or class is getting more interesting, especially if you are learning about alternative health care or holistic treatments. You have an opportunity to learn something that could dramatically improve your health or lifestyle. Virgo - Sit down and think about what you need for the future. Then get together with an investment planner and start making it happen. There are some wonderfully supportive aspects that will lead you to good financial advice this week. Be careful that you don't spend too much money this week.

OCEAN CADILLAC

W W W. O C E A N C A D I L L A C . N E T

Libra - Don't talk this week. Do. Get out together, share each other's company. Enjoy your partner, body and soul. If you are single, get out of the house, take lunch outside the office, get out and be seen. A soul mate may be closer than you think.

Scorpio - You are going to be getting some kind of special benefit or "perk" soon. You may be losing weight, or hearing about positive changes in your health and wellness. All that hard work is starting to pay off. You deserve a treat - a healthy, low-fat treat that is.

Sagittarius - You are long overdue for a little fun and recreation. You may be buying a new game for your computer, going to a movie theater, or to a local theme park for a last-minute getaway. You will have a lot of energy this week, and some wild and playful ideas.

Capricorn - A home-based business should have two key ingredients for success - a good, solid, supportive partner, and an outstanding creative idea. A little luck and investment from third parties couldn't hurt either. You could find many of the conditions you need are coming into place. Aquarius - You may be facing something of faux pas, likely caused by stumbling over your own words at a public event. Don't fret so much, you will recover quickly and should be able to make up for any minor faux pas with a little self-deprecating humor. In fact, you could end up the toast of the town! Pisces - You could make money this week from teaching, research, paperwork or through phone or a mail-order business. The keywords are "communication" and "information". You have knowledge and access to information resources that are valuable to others
