Florida Marlins Community Foundation sponsors "Give Back Day" for Student Connection Students from the Aventura Marketing Council's seven Dade Partner schools recently had the opportunity to visit four different sites throughout the county to 'give back' in their own way. Thanks to the generosity of the Florida Marlins Community Foundation, three buses transported at-risk students from North Miami Beach Sr. High, Alonzo & Tracy Mourning Sr. High, Highland Oaks Middle, Aventura Waterways K - 8 Center, David Lawrence, Jr. K - 8 Center, Ojus Elementary and Greynolds Park Elementary to Jungle Island, Miami Children's Museum, Aventura Plaza Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center and the United Cerebral Palsy's "Baby House". At each site, a group of students were given jobs to do‌ from folding laundry at the Baby House to guiding visitors at the Miami Children's Museum, to creating artwork at Jungle Island to playing games with the residents at Aventura Plaza.
Eileen Glastein, Bnai Zion Foundation, has served as the Aventura Marketing Council's Education Committee Chair for the past two years. "The outreach to our at-risk students has a lasting impression on these children that will help guide them through the rest of their lives," says Glastein. "It truly restores your faith in our children when you see them interact with people with difficulties." The Student Connection, part of the Aventura Marketing Council's Education Committee, plans field trips for the 80-90 at-risk students who participate each month, with the goal to introduce them to a variety of different careers. Once each year, the Student Connection participates in a "Give Back Day" to reinforce that no matter what their challenges in life may be, there is always time to 'give back' to those less fortunate. UBS hosts Business Development Committee meeting featuring 'History of Aventura' presentation by Comm. Bob Diamond BY BARI AUERBACH
"From 785 acres of swampland to the City of Excellence" - Aventura Commissioner Bob Diamond recently presented a fascinating history of Aventura during an Aventura Marketing Council Business Development Committee meeting hosted by Achilles Kontoyiannis of UBS Financial Services. Business Development Committee chair Peter L. Fishel, CPA along with Kontoyiannis welcomed guests to the UBS office at Aventura Harbour Centre, where expert financial advisors focus the global resources of one of the world's leading financial firms to help clients achieve their goals. Historical UBS highlights include its creation via a merger in 1912 between Toggenburger Bank and Bank in Winterthur. But the creation of Aventura had more to do with a "meeting of great minds" as developers recognized the potential to forge a model "City of Excellence" that officially incorporated in 1995. Who better than Aventura's own City Commissioner Bob Diamond, author of the "Historically Yours" column featured in Aventura News, to provide an overview of the city's historical progression. Diamond noted that today, many of Aventura's 31,000+ residents enjoy great amenities such as numerous parks, a Community Recreation Center, an "A" rated school, a soon to open Performing Arts Center, a police force maintaining low crime rates and beautifully landscaped roadways. "The Aventura story really began with the purchase of 785 acres of land east of the FEC tracks by the Goodman brothers of Jacksonville," Diamond said. "Sometime in 1967, Oxford arranged a boat trip on the Intracoastal Waterway to examine the Goodman property, which is the area north of the now Lehman Causeway. On that trip were Mark Mason, Eugene Lebowitz, Harry and Don Soffer and Edward J. Lewis. "In 1967, Oxford purchased that acreage from the Goodman Brothers with the Soffers, John Hancock Life Insurance Company and Arlen Realty and Development Corporation. Soffer soon teamed up with George Berlin, who became the trusted public face to spread the word about Turnberry and Aventura to a worldwide audience. "Don states that it was he who liked and chose the name 'Aventura' - in Spanish for adventure. Over the next 40 years, the marshlands were transformed into the world-famous Fairmont Turnberry Isle Resort & Club, the Aventura Mall, thousands of luxury condominium units and Class A office space." Throughout Diamond's comprehensive presentation, compiled with assistance from many government, business and community leaders, he chronicled milestone events and people who played pivotal roles in the creation of the City of Aventura - incorporated in 1995 with a start-up budget of $1.3 million. Today, the city's budget has grown to $49.9 million - but some things have stayed the same such as Aventura boasting the lowest property tax rate in Miami-Dade County and Eric M. Soroka, serving as the first and only city manager to date. And so, as the Business Development Committee went down in history as being one of the most enlightening regarding Aventura's success story, everyone looked forward to exciting new chapters as the "City of Excellence" ensures residents and business owners continue to enjoy the brightest future. VIEWPOINT Record Bank Profits and the Selling a City’s Soul for American Dream Foreclosed Chicken Feed BY MIKE PROKOSCH JP Morgan Chase launched the 2010 Wall Street Bonus Sweepstakes last month. The bank is still losing money on consumer services, but wellheeled investors and financial traders more than made up the difference. The bank announced $11.7 billion in profits and $26.9 billion in compensation, including bonuses that will run in the multimillions for top executives. Then Goldman Sachs reported record profits of $13.4 billion. It's set to dole out a staggering $16.2 billion in compensation and bonuses, which could provide an average of nearly $500,000 per employee. And Morgan Stanley, even having sustained a loss last year, has set aside $14.4 billion for compensation and bonuses. Then there's Roberto Velasquez, a sobering reminder that the foreclosure crisis is still raging. Velasquez, a general contractor, bought a single-family home in Dedham, Massachusetts six years ago and took out a mortgage that turned out to be a predatory time-bomb. After a few affordable years, his adjustable interest rate ballooned and his payments hit $4,800 a month. He kept up, though, until the Wall Street crash knocked the stuffing out of the construction industry. Then he fell three months behind. Velasquez found jobs and came up with the three months' payments, but the bank wouldn't work with him. His home was foreclosed on in November. A local bank offered to buy the home and sell it back to him for its present market value-the most his bank would get for the house if they sold it at auction. Still no deal. "We did what they asked," Velasquez says, "but they don't want to work with anybody." That kind of arrogance will sink more than Velasquez, his wife, and their two kids. Foreclosures feed on themselves, depressing neighborhood property values and putting ever more people underwater. There were 3.4 million foreclosures in 2009. Experts tell us to expect more this year. Unless the foreclosures stop, the housing market will keep spiraling downward. It will take the building and mortgage industries with it, stalling economic recovery. All of us will be hurting for years because Washington is refusing to make
the banks eat the debt bubble they created. Instead, the bailed-out banks are walking away with record profits and fat bonuses. There's a way to avoid another decade of downturn. United for a Fair Economy's new report, State of the Dream 2010: Drained, outlines key proposals that can stem the massive loss of personal wealth and homes. States and the federal government should put an immediate hold on foreclosures when unemployment causes homeowners to default. Bankruptcy judges must be given the power to cut down mortgages to levels homeowners can afford, as they already can for other types of loans. These reforms would stabilize families and communities, especially communities of color that are seeing hard-earned wealth stripped from them at alarming rates. The government would also push the banks to accept realistic write-downs on the inflated property values their books still reflect, squeeze debt out of the economy, and hasten a recovery. And they might even keep the banks from doing this to us again. President Obama just proposed a "Financial Crisis Responsibility Fee" to be imposed on the Wall Street firms that caused the crash and soaked up most of the relief funds. While this is a good start, the fee is temporary. When it ends, the banks can return to their irresponsible ways. A permanent financial transactions tax would discourage speculative trading in home mortgages and the derivative pyramids that were piled on top of them. Serious financial re-regulation, like that outlined in the State of the Dream report, is also essential. In the end, recovery isn't enough. Banks whose irresponsible behavior led to the meltdown must accept part of the responsibility, or they'll do it again. At the same time, we must aid the hardest-hit communities, where joblessness and foreclosures are still wreaking havoc. That's the only route to a fair recovery and a healthy economy. --

BY JIM HIGHTOWER PFire hydrants deserve more respect. These utilitarian and ubiquitous icons of America's urban landscape are rarely noticed by anyone but dogs-and they give hydrants no respect whatsoever. Worse, though, a brand-name corporation now intends to lift its leg on them! KFC, the fast-food chicken chain, has already gotten permission from Indianapolis to whiz on its hydrants. As part of an advertising blitz, KFC has plastered the city's water taps with a smiling photo of corporate founder Colonel Sanders, along with a slogan promoting the chain's new "fiery" chicken wings. Get it? "Fiery" and fire hydrant. It's symbolism, see? Advert-types are nothing if not clever. Of course, KFC honchos insist that the company's graffiti isn't an act of crass commercialism, but-get this-a philanthropic contribution to the community. They claim that they're simply concerned about fire safety in the city during these days of budget stress, so they've magnanimously "con-
tributed" some money to help pay for new hydrants. In exchange, grateful city officials are allowing the corporation to use the hydrants as its own little billboards around town. Exactly how magnanimous is KFC's philanthropic gesture? Get ready to be astounded: $5,000. That's it. The chickenplucking corporation got a PR bonanza for chicken feed. Indeed, guess how many fire hydrants $5,000 buys? Two. Don't you snicker at KFC's snookering of Indianapolis officials, however, for your city might be next. In a nationwide email to mayors, KFC is seeking three more cities to do the same deal. I realize that cities everywhere are financially squeezed, and it must be tempting for mayors to grab at any sort of quick fix. But, come on: If you're going to sell your city's soul to corporate hucksters, sell it for more than a nickel. --

FIU presents "Racial Profiling and the Construction of Muslim Identities After 9-11" The recent attempt by Nigerian-born Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab to blow up a transatlantic flight from Amsterdam to Detroit on Christmas day has increased debate over the utility of profiling as a means of preventing future terror acts. While some experts have argued that including race and religion when conducting airport screening is a must for Cyra Choudhury effectively rooting out possible terrorists, other experts have claimed such screening is counterproductive and often unjustly targets people of one religion in particular-Muslims. Exploring the latter side of this
debate, FIU's Middle East Society will present a lecture by Cyra Choudhury, who will discuss how such profiling has resulted in the incarceration of Muslim men yielding few convictions on terrorism charges and diverting attention away from catching the real terrorists. The lecture will take place on February 21st at 2:30 p.m. on FIU's Biscayne Bay Campus (3000 N.E. 151st Street, North Miami), Academic 1 Building, Room 194. Parking is complimentary. The event is open to the public. For more information contact the Middle East Society at 305-919-5381.

Historically Yours BY BOB DIAMOND Andrew Johnson And Anti-Semitism Vice President Andrew Johnson of Tennessee, who succeeded to the presidency in 1865 on the death of Abraham Lincoln, had an aversion to Jews. In early 1861, while still a senator from Tennessee, Johnson, made scurrilous anti-Semitic attacks against two prominent Senators, Judah P. Benjamin of Louisiana and Florida’s David Levy Yulee. Yulee, who fought to bring Florida into the Union in 1845, was called the “Florida fire-eater,” because “of his passionate oratory and staunch defense of the Confederate cause.” Unlike Johnson, both Benjamin and Yulee resigned from the senate when their states seceded from the Union. Johnson blamed Yulee for Florida’s secession: “There’s that Yulee, miserable little cuss! I remember him in the House – the contemptible little Jew – standing there and begging us- yes! Begging us to let Florida in as a State. Well! We let her in, and took care of her…and now that despicable little beggar stands up in the Senate and talks about her rights.”
According to historians David Dalin and Alfred Kolatch (The Presidents and the Jews), “Ironically, Yulee, whom Johnson so publicly despised as a Jew, had renounced Judaism several years prior to Johnson’s anti-Semitic remarks. Having changed his name from Levy to Yulee, he had converted to Christianity and thereafter claimed that he was not Jewish but descended from a Moroccan prince.” “Johnson continually disparaged Benjamin, who later served as the Confederacy’s attorney general, secretary of war and secretary of state, stating: “There’s another Jew, that miserable Benjamin! He looks on a country and a government as he would an old suit of clothes. He sold out the old one, and he would sell out the new, if he could make money.” In late 1861, in lashing out at the Southern Senators for dividing the Union, his harshest anti-Semitic words were for Benjamin: “Mr. Benjamin, who joined the Confederate government, is one who understands something about the idea of dividing garments; he belongs to that tribe that parted the garments of our Savior.” Johnson never attended a single day of school, was a tailor prior to a legislator and belonged to no church.

Holocaust Documentation and Education Center initiates fundraising efforts and unveils plans for South Florida Holocaust Museum The South Florida Holocaust Documentation and Education capital campaign kickoff program unveiled the new renderings for the first South Florida Holocaust Museum and the only one in North America to teach the lessons of the Holocaust in Spanish and English in North America. The showcase took place aboard Royal Caribbean International's Independence of the Seas and coincided with the 30th Anniversary for the Center. The renderings were designed by Gallagher and Associates whose prestigious list of accomplishments includes: World War II Museum (New Orleans, LA), Grammy Museum (Los Angeles, CA), Center of Civil and Human Rights (Atlanta, GA), International Spy Museum (Washington, D.C.), Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage (Cleveland, OH), The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Museum (Hollywood, CA), Montreal Holocaust Museum (Montreal, CA), Normandy American Cemetery Visitors Center (Normandy, France), and more. Author, historian, speaker, and Oscar and Emmy award winner Gerda Weissmann Klein spoke on surviving the Holocaust and meeting her future husband on the day of her liberation, and her constant fight to promote tolerance. Klein says the museum represents the best in mankind and hope for humanity. "We have moments of goodness and greatness and the greatness of the legacy and true moments lies in man's humanity to man amongst great tragedy," she explains. Other special guests included U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, Former Minority Leader of the Florida Senate Sen. Steve Geller, Congresswoman Debbie
Rositta Kenigsberg, executive VP, South Florida Holocaust Documentation and Education Center with Cong. Debbie Wasserman Schultz

Over the past 30 years, the center has produced the largest oral history collection in North America, an extensive collection of documents, art, letters, photographs, and artifacts including one of nine railcars in the world similar to ones used during the Holocaust, and outstanding award winning prejudice reduction programs for schools and teachers under a mandate the center itself authored. "The support from this capital campaign kickoff event will help build the first South Florida Holocaust Museum," says Rositta Kenigsberg, executive vice president of the South Florida Holocaust Documentation and Education Center. "This museum will endow within our borders and beyond a legacy of remembrance, hope and promise for all our children, regardless of race, color and creed. For three decades, the center has aggressively confronted hatred, prejudice and violence, but we need to do more. Given our global and national challenges, building this museum could not be more timely and urgent." For more information, call 954-929-5690 or visit hdec.org

Budapest BY BILL KOFOED
MASTERS OF ORGANIZATION The museum portion traces the story of anti-semitism from early times through the war years and is accentuated by the sound of jack boots pounding the pavement as you walk through the exhibits. A metal weeping willow tree bears leaves with the names of the lost and the Pava Synagogue are also located there. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 A.M - 6 P.M. Seniors over 70 are free. Guided tours are available. A visit to the Memorial, including transportation, is included in the complimentary shore excursions offered by Uniworld on its ship, the River Beatrice, which cruises the Danube on a regular basis. Another “must see” is the Jewish quarter, built in the 18th century when Jews were banned from the city. Within this residential area the second largest synagogue in the world was erected in 1859. The 3,000-seat synagogue, with its ByzantineMoorish architecture, is accentuated by two towers topped with onion-shaped domes, symbolizing King Solomon’s Temple. Budapest is easily accessible from Miami. A popular choice is to fly Swiss International to Zurich and then connect on the short flight to Budapest.

Budapest is a charming city - with spas, unique historic section, superb cuisine and a vibrant mix of medieval and modern. The city is divided into two parts, Buda in the hills and Pest in the flatlands. The two are separated by the Danube River. Budapest also harbors a dark history, the site of the last great migration of Jews during World War II to the gas chambers of Auschwitz. Up until 1944, the Hungarian Regent Admiral Horthy stalled the demands by Hitler to deport the Jews. That all changed in 1944 when Hitler ordered the Wehrmacht to occupy Hungary and to depose Horthy. Though Germany was losing the war, it placed a greater priority on exterminating the Jews instead of supplying its combat division. As a result, it commandeered enough railway cars and locomotives in 1944 to send over 430,000 of the estimated 600,000 Hungarian Jews who perished during the war to their deaths. The sheer logistics of this mass movement, terror and inhumanity are brilliantly captured in words, pictures and sound in Budapest’s four-story Holocaust Memorial, which opened in 1989.

Beth Torah Congregation celebrates 7th Annual Mitzvah Day Nearly 400 volunteers from Beth Torah Congregation united for their 7th Annual Mitzvah Day where volunteers of all ages participated in a variety of charitable acts. Most of the volunteers met at the synagogue's Benny Rok Campus where they fanned out to various sites that included visiting the elderly at Douglas Gardens, Hebrew Home and Regent Nursing Homes; park clean-ups at Oleta River State Park and Enchanted Forest; and renovations at Neytz HaChochma School and Camillus House. "Mitzvah Day is an annual event the congregation takes on to perform the act of 'tikkun olam,' repairing the world," said event chairwoman Elise Scheck Bonwitt. "It is a wonderful opportunity for people to volunteer and get involved in their community." Volunteer Lisa Sacks along with her children and other Beth Torah families spent the morning cleaning and painting at Neytz HaChochma, a special needs K-12 school in North Miami Beach run by Gregory Eisenman and his wife. "It was a great experience for our families to paint and help renovate an entire classroom," says Sacks. Teen volunteer Faryn Scheck, made phone calls to the Jewish community raising funds for the Greater Miami Jewish Federation's beneficiary agencies. "My favorite part is thanking people for their gifts because I feel like I'm doing a double mitzvah!" said Scheck. In the spirit of helping the community, volunteers also made 400 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches which were donated to Camillus House; delivered a truckload of kosher food supplies and baby formula to the Kosher Food Bank; and gave blood in the community bloodmobile. "I love being part of an event that gives people the opportunity to give back to others," Bonwitt added. "It's a wonderful way to teach our children all the different ways they can help our community." For more information about Beth Torah Benny Rok Campus, call 305-932-2829.

Travel Tips Beyond the Beach: Spring Break in Europe BY DAVID GEDANSKY If you’ve already done the beach scene for Spring Break and are looking for a different kind of spring vacation, look toward Europe. Depending on the length of your break and your interests, you might explore one of the continent’s cities in depth; or, take a tour of several cities or countries. Some of Europe’s most popular destinations are Paris, London and Rome: all are among this year’s top 10 international vacation destinations, according to a recent Travel Trends Survey conducted by Travel Leaders. Cruises of the European ports along the Mediterranean Sea are in the top 10 as well. While these are all fantastic Spring Break destinations, there are many others – some a little off the beaten path – to consider. Salzburg, Austria, has a gorgeous Alpine setting; a well-preserved city center full of Baroque architecture; and students from three universities to provide a lively atmosphere. There’s a lot to see, including the birthplace of Mozart, the massive Hohensalzburg Castle, the Salzburg Cathedral and Nonnberg Abbey, where Maria von Trapp of “The Sound of Music” fame was once a teacher. The Salzach River flows through the city, and the riverfront provides a lovely setting for cafes and bars where visitors enjoy coffee,
pastries and beer. Built on the River Lee near Ireland’s southern coast, Cork is the country’s second-largest city. The very walkable city center includes lots of shopping, dining, and entertainment along Patrick, Grand Parade and Oliver Plunkett streets. There are numerous museums to explore, along with art galleries, breweries and historic sites like Elizabeth Fort. A short trip out of town will take you to Blarney Castle, where you can kiss the famous stone said to grant the gift of eloquence. Seville is the cultural center of southern Spain, known for its beautiful buildings and monuments, such as the Cathedral of Seville and the Alcazar Palace. The city has a wonderful array of museums, gardens and parks. With so many potential European destinations to choose from, ask your travel professional to help you plan a Spring Break itinerary. After deciding where to go, you can decide how – much of Europe can be seen by bus, rail or plane, either on a tour or on your own. Your travel professional can fill you in on all the possibilities and best strategies for stretching your dollars. MFog is a meteorological condition. It is a weather phenomenon. Fog is a thick cloud of water vapor suspended in the atmosphere. It is very dense and all encompassing. It prevents you from seeing what is around you or ahead of you. It prevents you from seeing what is beyond it and it prevents you from seeing what exists outside of it. If you have ever driven in the fog you know that there is no visibility. You cannot go fast. You have to use special fog lights to help you see. . You strain to see the white lines on the road so you can follow them and they can guide you to safety. It can be a very tense situation until the fog lifts and you can see clearly. Fog is also a human condition. It is a mental, emotional and psychological phenomenon. There are two types of human fog. Type one is the fog you are aware of in your own life and type two is the type you and others are unaware of. Mental, emotional and psychological fog is a state of confusion, uncertainty and hesitation. You feel baffled, puzzled and you are often at a loss about which direction
to take or where you are going. Things seem unclear and vague. You have difficulty making decisions because you cannot think or see clearly. The white lines that can guide you safely through the situation are obscured by the haze. It may last for a day, a week or even a month or more. Fog like this creates feelings of tension and anxiety. You may also experience feelings of vulnerability and apprehension. Relax; this is only a temporary state. Switch on your fog lights. Be reassured that your fog will lift and you will see things clearly again. You will be able to function in a clearly, superior manner. Type two fog occurs in those individuals who are unaware that they are in a fog. They go through their days without seeing anyone or anything around them. They appear insensitive, uncaring and heartless. They are completely self-absorbed. They cannot see you. They are in a permanent fog. Try to avoid them. Just like the fog in the weather, type one mental, emotional and psychological fog will lift especially if you do things to burn it off. Type two will not. Nothing lifts or penetrates that fog. Eat This... Drink That...
‘Mood Foods’ for Every Day BY SHARI LYNN ROTHSTEIN-KRAMER Well Valentine’s Day has come and gone… again. And each year, as everyone scrambles to get the ideal gift, pick the right restaurant, prepare the right meal, and make the mood just right for romance, I think about the days to follow. Shouldn’t every day be romantic and filled with love? Shouldn’t every meal be passion-filled and made with love? I believe that any meal cooked and shared with the one you adore is romantic. I love dining out, but at the same time, if I really want intimacy, I prefer to stay in and indulge in the privacy of my own home. I know the food will be amazing, the champagne will be exactly what I want, and I do not have to drive (which means I can indulge). There are so many amazing foods (some typical, some atypical) that are ideal “love” foods. Here are some of my favorite ingredients, spices, herbs, and and foods to make every day just a little more love-ly.
Almonds: This healthy little nut is not only good for you, but has been known as a symbol of fertility throughout the ages. Its aroma has been known to induce passion women. Sexy spices include Basil, which is said to stimulate desire and enhance fertility; It also good for the body and mind. Ginger has been used for centuries as digestive aid, but its “sexy” powers come from its ability to increase circulation. Doesn’t matter how you eat it – pickled (say, with sushi), candied (as a nibble), or raw (as an ingredient), ginger increases sensitivity in the erogenous zones. They say that garlic is an aphrodisiac. Aside from all of its healing properties, it makes everything taste better. The only catch? The myth says that both people must eat garlic to make its powers work. Hmmm…I can’t imagine why? Scallops are legendary aphrodisiacs because the Greek goddess Aphrodite was carried to earth on a scallop shell. Now there are scientific facts to back up that these delicious, mild tasting, semi-firm bivalves hold the potential for raising sexual hormone levels in both men and women. Just the thought of bacon wrapped scallops
(yes, bacon, too, is thought to be a “turn on” to folks (think vegetarians that would stray for a strip of that tasty crispy flesh) definitely excites me, and when paired with a good champagne, the virtual poster child for amour. Tuna (a.k.a. Ahi) is rich in calcium, B-Vitamins, Omega 3 oil, and selenium, a mood-enhancing mineral that also makes men more virile. Raw, served sashimi-style, keeps the “good stuff” in tuna most potent. Try some sweet-salty tasting oysters. The oyster is loaded with zinc, is a great source of protein, and has been proven to enhance desire in men and women. Whether you prefer small (like Kumamoto), medium (like Blue Points) or large (like Louisiana oysters), each mollusk has the same magical properties. Spicy foods that include chili peppers, jalapenos, habaneras, cayenne, and the like increase metabolic rates and “heat up” those who eat them. Clams, caviar, conch, sea urchin (uuni), and turkey also have those. And now, the best part of all: Chocolate . According to legend Aztec ruler, Montezuma, drank as many as 50 cups of chocolate every day to boost his
virility before visiting his harem. The Spanish conquistadors later reintroduced the delicacy heated (thus, Hot Chocolate) and the phenylethylamine (PEA) in chocolate makes us release the same hormones (though in little doses) we do when making love. This “Food of the Gods” is a delicious, complex sweet that simply makes us “happy”. Dip bananas (high in potassium and well, just look at them, need we say more?), Peaches (fuzzy skin on curved flesh), Wedding Cake (from a traditional standpoint, the white icing was the symbol of virginity and white bed sheets), Strawberries, Watermelon, and Mango in chocolate and you’ve got one heck of an ending! But no matter what you choose to eat your way into happiness, make sure you sop, prep, and linger over dinner with the one you love. That is the greatest gift of all! Shari Lynn Rothstein has been writing about food, wine, lifestyles and fashion for more than 20 years, in New York and Florida. She resides in Aventura. Shari can be reached at shari@slkcreative.com for comments, questions thoughts.

February 17 - 23, 2010
BY REV. WILL KEYSER MFebruary has been designated as ‘heart month’ not only because of the excitment of Valentine’s Day but as a time to have an evaluation done on the condition of your heart. Everywhere you look you will see RED reminding you to take advantage of all the activities going on to help prevent and to cure heart disease. Another way to check the condition of your heart is by self-examination. The Scriptures reveal a lot about the heart. Moses wrote regarding the poor among us: “Do not be hard-hearted or tight-fisted toward your poor brother. Give generously to him and do so without a grudging heart.” Later he warned of loosing sight of God’s law and worshiping idols: “The Lord will give you an anxious mind, eyes weary with longing and a despairing heart.” Any and all of those conditions would not be considered good for your heart-health. (Deuteronomy 15:10; 28:56) When David found himself with a sorrowful heart, he said: “I trust in your unfailing love and my heart rejoices in your salvation.” He was careful to “set the Lord always before him” and therefore “his heart was glad.” (Psalm 13:5; 15:6) David was
not so concerned with his “blood pump” as he was the center of his emotions. When he considered the things that gave him a sorrowful or heavy heart he consistently trusted God and his heart was changed. Perhaps this is the time for you to get a heart check-up from your physician to make sure your “blood pump” is operating correctly. It may also be a good time to get a check up on your heart, the center of your emotions. The first one is covered by your healthcare plan; The second one is absolutely free. Samuel, the last of the Judges in Israel, had this to say about your heart: “Man looks at the outward appearance, but The Lord looks at the heart.” (I Samuel 16:7) David set the pattern for a heart examination more than once, and by his own request.”Test me, O Lord, and try me, examine my heart and my mind.” Later he asked for another test, not another opinion, but as a follow-up. “Search me, O God, and know my heart: Test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” (Psalm 26:2; 139:23-24) This month could be the month that you take a good look at the condition of your heart physically as well as spiritually. The results could preserve your life, both ways! Rev. Keyser is Pastor of The church At Aventura 305 931 4823

Denise Rubin Talks Real Estate
Never Pay Another Expensive Repair Again
By Boat BY DENISE RUBIN_ MYes, it’s boat show season in Miami. The annual Miami International boat show just took place in Miami Beach on Collins Ave. As well as in the Miami Beach Convention Center. This year there was plenty to get excited about with new boats debuting at prices considerably less than you would expect to pay, ranging from $1,000 to $3,300,000. Then there was the Yacht and Brokerage Show, which featured the world’s most extraordinary yachts and super yachts. The in-water-only display presentation covered more than 12 million square feet of space over a mile long strip of Indian Creek Waterway, featuring 500 new and pre-owned vessels valued at more than a billion dollars. I sure have a deep appreciation for boats. Not only do I enjoy the sport, but more importantly, “Boats Sell Real Estate”. All my experiences came fleeting back to mind, brought on by all these
shows. Once, an avid sport fisherman client of mine prioritized his home search by the available dock space. We set sail, and only after we found the right dock in a marina within a condo development, did he purchase his condo. Then there was my Canadian family looking for a winter home here. They didn’t have a boat, yet but knew they wanted one. We had looked at several homes by car but nothing tickled their fancy. I decided to take them house hunting by boat. Everything looked different from the water and when we tied up to a deep water dock, with no bridges to the bay and ocean access, they found true perfection. They brought some extra family members and a few friends. I brought “Bentley” my tea-cup Yorkie wearing his little yellow rubber life vest who temporarily stole the show. The water glistened, the mood was delightful and they were home. They moved in a month later. 2010 Terrain is GMC’s all-new crossover SUV Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS The all-new 2010 GMC Terrain has a lot to get excited about. It’s a five-passenger crossover SUV with distinctive styling, and some new technology to deliver better gas mileage. The Terrain rides on a 112.5-inch wheelbase and has a four-wheel independent suspension system, with wide front and rear tracks for a better ride and handling. A new 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with direct injection powers the Terrain and it gets an impressive 32 mpg on the highway. Maximum fuel economy is achieved in part with an “eco” mode activated by pressing a button on the console. A 3.0-liter DOHC 264 hp direct-injected V-6 engine is another option. Both engines are mated to sixspeed automatic transmissions and frontwheel-drive and all-wheel-drive models are offered in SLE and SLT trim levels. The Terrain is easy on the eyes with a balanced, athletic stance. It has angular sur-
faces and muscular fender flares, with a strong front-end characterized by squaredoff edges and a three-element grille accented by a chrome surround and projectorbeam headlamps mounted in large, rectangular housings. On the inside, the Terrain interior is comfortable and luxurious, with contrasting stitching and materials that create a quality look throughout the cabin. A floating center stack is highlighted by ambient lighting and houses the comfort and convenience controls. The Terrain also has an abundance of storage space, with numerous compartments suitable for a variety of items, including an oversized glove box, a closed storage area in the instrument panel above the center stack, another under the center armrest that is large enough for a laptop computer and two-tier storage in the doors. The seats are comfortable and the standard MultiFlex sliding rear seat can be moved fore or aft almost eight inches for more passenger comfort or greater rear cargo capacity. The 60/40-split rear seatback offers additional configurations for passengers and cargo. There also are four auxiliary power outlets in the rear cargo area. The Terrain comes with a lengthy list of

Safety features include four-wheel disc brakes with StabiliTrak electronic stability

‘Let’s Move!’ How parents can support childhood obesity fight
Kampai!
Japanese Restaurant
3575 NE 207 Street Aventura, FL 33180 • Suite B12
305-931-6410 BY BARI AUERBACH First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign is designed to get kids eating healthier and exercising more – but if parents don’t get actively involved in the fight against childhood obesity – achieving weight loss goals may be a losing battle. According to the Centers for Disease Control, over the past two decades, the percentage of overweight adolescents nationwide has more than doubled – and one out of every three children in the U.S. are overweight or at risk of becoming overweight. This puts nearly 25 million kids at risk for a future riddled with diabetes, arthritis and heart disease. The Mayo Clinic also warns childhood obesity increases risks of high blood pressure, asthma and other respiratory problems. Main components of the “Let’s Move” campaign include helping parents make better food choices and encouraging children to exercise more. While South Florida school systems are already working to promote healthy eating and physical fitness, when kids are home, it’s up to parents to ensure they’re consuming healthy meals and snacks. Tosca Reno, author of “The Eat-Clean Diet” recommends setting structured meal times for children and offering varied choices of clean foods. “Allow your children to decide what they want to eat – but make the offerings healthy and nutritious – eliminate ‘junk’ right at the grocery store,” Tosca says. Parents with kids who turn up their nose unless it’s “chicken nuggets and fries” will be happy to learn Dr. Praeger’s Sensible Foods has introduced Dr. Praeger’s Kids Littles – a line of frozen, fun-shaped, bite-size spinach,
broccoli, sweet potato and potato pancakes as well as veggie meatballs plus bite-size appetizers (broccoli, potato, sweet potato and spinach) plus a gluten-free veggie burger. Available at Whole Foods Market and Aventura’s Winn Dixie, each of the Praeger products are low in saturated fat and cholesterol, contain no artificial flavorings, colors or preservatives and are certified Kosher. “Many of the foods on supermarket shelves that target children are high in sugar, saturated fat and offer no nutritional value,” noted heart surgeon, President, CEO and Founder of Dr. Praeger’s Sensible Foods, Dr. Peter Praeger. “Through our Dr. Praeger’s Kids Littles line, we’re helping parents and schools offer more smart choices for children.” Beyond making smarter food choices, the “Let’s Move” campaign also places a heavy emphasis on physical activity. Rather than letting kids stay glued to TV’s, computers, cell phones and video games (other than Wii Fitness) parents can encourage them to take after-school dance or martial arts classes; participate in sports leagues - or if household budgets are tight - taking a walk after dinner or sharing fun outdoor activities on weekends can become a ritual bringing families closer together. Today, there is a plethora of information readily available from physicians, fitness and nutrition experts about how to help prevent more children from falling victim to the grim prediction that for the first time in history, they may not live the long, healthy lives their parents did thanks to poor nutritional habits and a sedentary lifestyle. But perhaps the best tip for parents when it comes to supporting the “Let’s Move” campaign is “Set the example yourself every day!!”

ABOUT GREAT FLORIDA BANK
T
SARADE LE IN
Tatyana Zaslavsky and Viktorija Kozarez are helping Great Florida Bank (NASDAQ – GFLB) capture a growing share of Russian clientele in South Florida by offering unparalleled customer service. They have been working together since 2000 and have developed a strong business across Miami-Dade and Broward counties based on referrals from clients who appreciate their personal touch. “The Russian community prefers to speak in their own language,” says Kozarez, who has been working as a banker since coming to the U.S. 15 years ago and has been a relationship banker with Great Florida Bank since 2006. “It’s more comfortable for them.” It’s not uncommon for Zaslavsky and Kozarez to make house calls, or drive to a client’s home to pick them up and take them to the bank. They know every customer by name, help with directions and take the time to call them on a regular basis. “We have some customers that come to see us every day,” says Zaslavsky, an ambassador with Great Florida Bank. “Many times our relationship starts with
opening a CD, but when our customers experience the level of service we provide, we start to open other accounts and receive referrals.” Zaslavsky and Kozarez work out of the Great Florida Bank Hallandale Beach Solution Center at 1709 East Hallandale Beach Boulevard. They can be reached on (954) 306-7620.

‘Dental Options’ - For all your dental needs BY LEE STEPHENS Dental Options, P.A. is expanding and pleased to announce that they just opened its doors to you and your family at their new Aventura location. Their friendly staff will proudly show you their new office and provide you with all the information on services they offer. This new office was designed and constructed to the highest industry standards with the latest technology and progressive design to make your visit comfortable, safe and affordable. The beautiful office space with windows from ceiling to floor has panoramic views of Aventura and puts Dental Options’ patients in a relaxed mood. The spacious interior has well-lit exam rooms and neutral colors complete this cheerful space. In Dental Options, the dental services are provided by an experienced professional team using the latest techniques, thus providing quality and comfort in a gentle and caring atmosphere. Dental Options uses only digital Xrays, including a modern Panoramic/ Cephalometric equipment, which means that computer applications enable each dentist to observe and understand the structure of the teeth, gums and bone formation in greater detail. Also, when digital X-rays are taken, the patient is exposed to less radiation and the process is quicker. Dentists can zoom in and focus in depth. They can view enhanced images and can take measurements with the computer. This really helps Dental Options’ doctors with their diagnosis as potential problems can be detected with these tools. At Dental Options, there are six Dentists including two General and Cosmetic Dentists and four specialists: a Periodontist, an Orthodontist, an Endodontist, and an Oral Surgeon. The doctors are graduates of Harvard University, Columbia University, New York University, Nova University and University of Florida. Along with three Dental Hygienists and their
piece and they go inside the bone, usually with no post-operative pain. The bone grows around the threads of the implant which generally takes 3 to 4 months. The patient returns to the office and a crown is then fitted on top of the implant. The beauty of Dental Options is that all the Dentists and Dentistry specialists work together in the same office. They are committed and consult with each other, providing the patients with all the options. WEEKLY HOROSCOPES Aries - There is great good news coming about your work and health - but you may have a hard time sharing that news with others this week. You'll be pushy and impatient, and will be a lot happier if you slow things down - but you'll be very excited and excitable right now.
Libra - Someone may accuse you of having
Taurus - It may be hard for you to make your children understand that you can't have everything - even if you can "afford" it financially. You'll have an opportunity this week to teach a child the cultural or family values you cherish, but it may not be as easy as you hoped.
Scorpio - A friend or companion seems to be having a touch of "bi-polar" disorder - or maybe it's just a case of some pretty hard mood swings. Take a step back emotionally and you will see that any outbursts are really cries for help. Someone needs a hug.
an authority figure complex, but that would not be fair. You just have a problem with authority figures who abuse their power, and right now you are in no mood to sit and take it. You have discovered a way you can make a difference.
the middle of a giant tug of war in your family this week. The best way to avoid the flap is to lay low. If you get in the middle of the flap, you may be able to help in the short term, but it will likely be stressful.
Sagittarius - Your promising new project could be on hold because of the constant bickering of two of your working partners. If you want to resolve it, give them complimentary responsibilities that do not compete, and which work with their own unique working styles.
Cancer - The words are flying out of your
Capricorn - You may end up in an argu-
mouth at a mile a minute, but you don't seem to be making any sense. That's because your mind, and the minds of your listeners, are on two totally different wavelengths. You are so far ahead of your audience this week it's not funny.
ment with your significant other this week if you are not careful. You may be so busy arguing about the lack of communication that you forget to listen. The answer to any dispute this week is to let go of the need to "win".
Leo - You may be frustrated with some recent financial changes, or with your partner's spending habits right at the moment. They are feeling insecure and may want to personalize and beautify the household, but they may be going about it in a sloppy, inconsiderate or expensive manner.
Aquarius - Your financial insights right now
Virgo - That new leadership role you are
Pisces - You and your significant other need to get out more, but this week is not the this week. It's going to be a challenge to get your schedules to match up, and you'll both be moody. If you are single, be aware that you are going to be a bit fuzzy-headed where it comes to others this week.
Gemini - You feel like you are the flag in
thinking of assuming could turn out to have financial strings attached. You could get lucky and be voted treasurer of your favorite club, but you may also find out that the cupboard is bare, and you are the one in charge of the next fundraising drive.
