Eagle National Bank, now JGB Bank, hosts Super Bowl 2010 'super preview' Host Committee Chair Rodney Barreto and President Mike Zimmer; Dick Anderson, Super Bowl champion; and Tony Segreto, veteran broadcast journalist BY BARI AUERBACH Just before this year's Super Bowl kicked off in Tampa, Aventura Marketing Council members were treated to a "super preview" of Super Bowl XLIV, coming back to South Florida for the tenth time in 2010. Eagle National Bank, announcing their name change to JGB Bank, hosted the event's all-star panel of special guests: Rodney Barreto, Chairman of the South Florida Super Bowl 2010 Host Committee; Mike Zimmer, Host Committee President; Dick Anderson, two-time Super Bowl champ, former Florida Senator and chair of the '89 Super Bowl Host Committee; and Tony Segreto, who recently retired from NBC 6 after an illustrious 40-year career in broadcast journalism. AMC Chair Cliff Schulman of Greenberg Traurig along with JGB Bank president and CEO Robert Brookes, welcomed hundreds of business and community leaders gathered at The Fairmont Turnberry Isle Resort & Club. Guests enjoying a superlative breakfast also had the opportunity to meet the bank's super financial experts including Leslie Stein, vice president and Aventura branch manager. Chief Financial Officer Carlos Bell and Gabriel Gilinski were also there rooting for the JGB team dedicated to providing high-tech banking and personalized service - the old fashioned way. "We've served the South Florida community since 1957 and Aventura since 1999," Brookes said, "JGB Bank is among the highest-rated banks in the country for safety and soundness‌consistently achieving four-star ratings from independent bank rating services. In these financially challenging times, it's good to know JGB Bank is poised for significant, conservatively managed growth and ready to serve the needs of

corporate and personal clients." From community oriented banking, the topic turned to how the Super Bowl Host Committee is gearing up to get the whole community involved in the excitement surrounding Super Bowl XLIV and the Pro Bowl - played the Sunday before. "It's not just about the game - it's about getting this community together for huge events," Segreto said. "From businesses to volunteers - everyone can be a part of it and benefit from the cachet of Super Bowl." Rodney Barreto, a third-time Host Committee chair, emphasized the Super Bowl's phenomenal economic score. "Super Bowl XLI generated a total economic impact on South Florida of $463 million and 112,403 people visited for Carlos Bell, CFO, JGB Bank; Super Bowl Champion Dick Anderson; Tony Segreto; Robert Brookes, president the game and related activities. and CEO, JGB Bank; South Florida Super Bowl 2010 Host Committee Chair Rodney Barreto and President Mike Zimmer; Leslie Stein, VP and branch manager, JGB Bank ~ Aventura Corporate America comes for the best restaurants, best hotels and best beaches. Ocasio was traveling in his own car, stopped at a red light at the intersection of Ives Dairy Road and NE 12th Avenue where he witnessed a black male approach the vehicle directly behind him and attempt to open the front passenger door. When the door did not open, the subject punched in the front passenger window, reached inside, grabbed the victim's purse and fled. Without hesitation, the officer followed the suspect for a half block where he intercepted him at gunpoint, ordering him to the ground and was able to take him into custody without incident. During the investigation, it was discovered that the subject had property belonging to other victims that he stole a few hours earlier. Fortunate for this victim, all her belongings were returned promptly.

VIEWPOINT Ethics may be too much to ask A new dearth of Wall BY DONALD KAUL Give Barack Obama credit. Barely a month on the job and already he's increased tax revenues by hundreds of thousands of dollars. He nominated Timothy (Tiny Tim) Geithner to be Secretary of the Treasury and Geithner immediately discovered he'd forgotten to pay $48,000 in back taxes. So he paid them. Then he chose Tom Daschle as his Secretary of Health and Human Services and Daschle quickly coughed up $140 K in back taxes. Too late. He had to withdraw his candidacy; just after the president's candidate for chief government performance officer withdrew hers because of tax problems. She paid up too. I have two words for the Obama administration: H&R Block. It's not been the happiest of times for ethics in public office, which is rapidly becoming an oxymoron. We have seen the governor of Illinois thrown from office by his legislature after it found him trying to sell the vacant Obama Senate seat on eBay. Then there is the revelation that Sen. Christopher Dodd, head of the Senate banking committee and outspoken opponent of tightening certain bank regulations was getting sweetheart loans from a bank that is also one of his biggest political contributors. What a coincidence. All this, of course, happened not long after Ted Stevens, the longest-serving Republican in the Senate, was diselected by voters after being found guilty of using his office as a home improvement enterprise. His home. And who could forget Louisiana Rep. William “the Refrigerator” Jefferson, he of the $90,000 in (very) cold cash? Did I mention Eliot Spitzer, the former governor of New York? I won't. Let lying dogs sleep, that's my motto. It almost makes you wish for the good old days when President Dwight Eisenhower had to fire Sherman Adams, his right-hand man, for taking the gift of a vicuña coat from a grateful political patron. (Which inspired the apocryphal story that had Ike saying to Adams: “Vicuña? Vicuña waited until after the election?”) Today Adams wouldn't have to resign. He'd be laughed out of office for thinking small.

How does all of this square with President Obama's pledge to bring a new integrity into the political process? Technically, it doesn't. However, I would argue it's just a matter of commendable idealism clashing with the harsh realities of political life. We work within a system of capitalism that celebrates greed as a virtue, after all. That being said, it's unfair to say that it's OK for everyone in the private sector to take every dime that isn't nailed down (think Wall Street bonuses) while people seeking government service are expected to have lived the lives of monks who have taken vows of poverty. You have to give people a little slack. If you're taking bribes and putting the cash in your freezer…that's a definite no-no. If you just chisel a little on your income tax, well, maybe we can let you off with a warning. Or not. It's a matter of degree. I've always thought that the proper rule of thumb in these matters is this: Don't expect anyone to take less advantage of their situation than you would if you had their chances. And here's another: Never trust a totally honest man. He has no sympathy for human failings. I think we could eliminate half the hypocrisy in government by privatizing the U.S Senate. Instead of electing senators, as we do now, we could put Senate seats up for auction for corporations and special interests to bid on, with the money going into the Treasury. What about the will of the people, you say? That's why we have the House of Representatives. A key point: No corporation or special interest could own shares in more than four senators (several fewer than they own now). The senators would be required to wear the corporate logos of their sponsors while on the floor of the Senate, sort of like NASCAR drivers. The plan would slice through the hypocrisy and go a long way toward balancing the budget. -Don Kaul is a two-time Pulitzer Prize-losing Washington correspondent who, by his own account, is right more than he's wrong. Street arrogance BY JIM HIGHTOWER

es:

Goodness gracious, Congress is really getting tough on Wall Street bankers, isn't it? In a remarkable act of bipartisan boldness, Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein and Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe are proposing to impose new conditions on banks that are getting bailout funds from us taxpayers. Would bankers have to start lending out the money to help our economy, rather than just pocketing it? Or maybe the bankers would have to cut their pay, like Congress insisted that autoworkers do? No, no - nothing as harsh as all that. Instead, the senators are demanding that the recipients report occasionally to the public, giving us some general idea of what they're doing with our cash. Whoa, go easy now senators, you, might bruise the bankers' feelings. Believe it or not, this is what passes for "tough" when dealing with Wall Street hucksters. Yet, it's a necessary step, for the ego-maniacal financial giants are imperiously refusing to tell us how they're spending the billions of dollars Washington has thrown at them. In December, Associated Press asked various recipients where our money went, getting these typical respons-

"We're choosing not to disclose that," said New York Mellon, which hauled in about $3 billion. "We have not disclosed that to the public. We're declining to," said JPMorgan Chase, which got $25 billion from us. "We're not providing dollar-in, dollarout tracking," said Sun Trust Banks, a $3.5 billion winner. "We're going to decline to comment," said Morgan Stanley, after getting $10 billion. "We're not sharing any other details. We're just not," said Comerica, which took more than $2 billion from us. As AP reported, one bank's spokesman was even closed-mouthed about being closed-mouthed: "I just would prefer if you wouldn't say that we're not going to discuss those details." Why isn't Congress demanding that these con artists give our money back? -For more information on Jim Hightower's work - and to subscribe to his award-winning monthly newsletter, The Hightower Lowdown, visit www.jimhightower.com <http://www.jimhightower.com>

Are you a people pleaser? BY PATRICIA C. FRANK People Pleasers are usually people who put everyone else ahead of themselves. They have to be there for everyone. They have to meet everyone else’s needs and ignore their own. They are often caretakers as well. People Pleasers do not have clear boundaries in their lives. They are fused with others. Because they do not have clear boundaries, they do not have a clear sense of themselves. They have been deprived of their autonomy. They do not know that they are allowed to meet their own needs and be happy. How does one become a people pleaser? If your parents did not feel good about themselves, you may have sensed these feelings, and absorbed those feelings as your own. If your parents had low self-esteem, they would have seen you as an extension of themselves. They did not respect you as an individual so you believed that you were not worthy of love unless you always did whatever you could for everyone else. People Pleasers learn to avoid conflict. They learn that the consequences are too severe and painful. Standing up for themselves or defending themselves is not worth

the trouble it causes. So, they do whatever they have to do to keep the peace. They pay a high price. Sadly, the sacrifices they make are never appreciated. After a while it becomes more difficult to deny their needs. They become demoralized, exhausted, unfulfilled and frustrated. People Pleasers tend to feel used and abused and they are. If you have been meeting the spoken or unspoken demands of others, you need to begin to change the dynamics of your relationships and give yourself the respect you deserve. You need to realize that you are entitled to fulfill your own needs. You are as important as others. However, when you try to set boundaries, those used to the old you will resist and fight to keep things as they were. Because of how difficult they will make it, you may be tempted to give in to them. Practice resisting their pressure. It is not an easy transition but a very necessary one. Boundaries are necessary to take care of your needs. If you can learn to love and accept yourself then hopefully others will do the same. It is important for you to know that you can be loved for yourself and not for what you do for others. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. She can be reached at 305788-4864, 212 308-0309

Continental Group Regional President Gary Pyott helps condo associations through hard times BY LYNN CARROLL

PROVOCATIVE QUESTIONS FOR PROVOCATIVE PEOPLE

major advantages is our expertise in all types of associations HOAs, townhouses and low-rise sited communities as well as condos. As a large property management company, there are cost savings we bring to associations through our partnerships with energy providers, elevator companies, trash collection companies and more. These are exclusive relationships that no other management company can offer - and in many cases, they are the same service providers an association is already using.

LC: What is The Continental Group all about? GP: Based in Hollywood, The Continental Group is the largest manager of multifamily rental communities and condominium and homeowner associations in the State of Florida, and one of South Florida's leading private sector employers. We have regional offices in Kendall, West Palm Beach, Orlando, St. Petersburg and Jacksonville. Right now, the company manages and maintains more than 1,300 condominium and homeowner associations in Florida, representing over 310,000 residential units.

LC: How is the slump in the real estate market affecting your business?

LC: What responsibilities does your recent appointment as regional president of the Palm Beach Region entail?

GP: Associations are directly affected by the real estate market, because when people don't pay their dues, the amount of money an association can spend on its services is reduced. We guide our clients in the most efficient collection policies and work with them on the best, most cost effective ways to deal with units in delinquency. The ultimate goal is to collect maintenance fees. But if it becomes necessary to initiate foreclosure proceedings, we bring to the table attorneys and law firms that have the ability to process the paperwork quickly, because that's a very lengthy process and you don't want any unnecessary delay.

GP: The Palm Beach Region encompasses all of Palm Beach County, and includes under its umbrella Prime Management Co. and Wellington Management Co. Altogether, we represent about 450 associations. LC: How can you help homeowner associations through this economic crisis? GP: By continuing to provide sound management and being proactive rather than reactive, we're able to maintain the highest possible standards of the community, considering the present financial climate. In today's marketplace, one of our

Don’t have an affair

Q; I’m 28 years old and my wife of eight years is 25. We have two children and one on the way. In the past nine years we have had our ups and downs, but overall we are happy. The thing is that sexually we are not compatible. I have a very high sex drive and hers is very low. She would be happy to do it once a fortnight and in one or two positions, while I would do it every day in every possible position. I also like it a little bit kinky. Five years ago we swung for a short time and our sex life was great and we had fun together. It’s a long story, but something happened and it ended. Then things went back to the way they were. I know that we cannot turn back the clock, but I have tried all kinds of things to spice things up but all she says is that she likes it this way. Now I’m thinking about going out

and having an affair and find a sex partner who can satisfy my sexual needs. I love my wife very much and I know she loves me. WE have both come to terms with the way we are, so what do we do? A: Let’s look at the facts. You’ve been together for nine years. You have two children and another one on the way. You and your wife love each other. Given that set of circumstances, would it be better to have an affair, where you risk infecting both you and your wife some sexually transmitted disease, or to go to a sex therapist and see if there is any help for you? I think the answer is obvious, and since you’re writing to me, I think you also know that having an affair won’t work. It’s the easy way out, but in the long run it could cost you dearly. In most couples, both partners do not share identical libidos, or sex drives. There is almost always a difference. These differences can usually be worked out. You wife may have to learn to satisfy you even when she doesn’t feel like having an orgasm herself. You may need to learn how to use fantasy so that you can visualize these kinky sex scenes without actually having to act them out. You’ve written to me for advice, so please accept it. Find a sex therapist and try to work things out between you and your wife, both for the sake of the two of you and your children.

On Sunday, January 18th, nearly 1,000 walkers and 75 volunteers participated in the third annual National Psoriasis Walk for Awareness in Miami. The walk, presented by Amgen Wyeth and hosted by Aventura Mall, raised more than $223,000 to help find a cure for psoriasis, a serious, lifelong disease of the immune system that appears on the skin, causing it to itch, crack and bleed. "A huge thank you to everyone who participated in the event and raised funds to help find a cure for psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis," said Debbie Secor, National Psoriasis Foundation Walk manager. "We're especially grateful to the Henschel family and the walk committee for all their hard work in the planning process, as well as the top fundraising teams and individuals. We are still a bit short of $300,000 goal, but I know we'll

reach it through online donations and the virtual walk." Walkers also donated 50 DNA samples for the National Psoriasis Victor Henschel BioBank. The BioBank is a collection of biological samples and clinical information that will further psoriasis genetics research and increase understanding of the disease. Nationwide, psoriasis affects as many as 7.5 million people, according to the National Institutes of Health. Up to 30 percent of people with psoriasis develop psoriatic arthritis, a disease that causes pain, swelling and stiffness in and around the joints. People with psoriasis are at risk of developing other serious conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and depression. The Alternative Board: Improving your business so you can better enjoy your life Now, you can achieve all your goals using a cost-effective, peer advisory board made up of owners from your community. You may feel your business has reached a growth plateau. Where do you turn to help improve and better manage the business? Perhaps you consult family members, an accountant or lawyer - or worse - make important business decisions alone. Peer advice is one tool that has been growing in popularity with business owners. The business owner meets with peers who have been in similar situations, allowing them to tap into each other's past experiences, mistakes and expertise. Peers act as a group of advisors who help the owner work on their business, preventing mistakes and learning new techniques to help their business become more successful and profitable. The result is objective and candid advice created by a "think tank" atmosphere owners cannot create by themselves. The board provides a safe, confidential place for owners to air problems. Advice received during meetings saves time so the business doesn't have to reinvent the wheel. Another major benefit of peer advice is that the business owner finds practical solutions to problems and learns how to approach new opportunities. Their peers hold them accountable for following through on ideas and goals for their business and become an extension of the business's management team who cares about the success of the business. Monthly meetings allow the board members to bond, develop relationships with similar-sized companies and get to know one another's business. Essentially, the board members motivate each other to accomplish goals and solve issues discussed at meetings. Business owners face human resources issues, sales productivity, marketing strategies and making payroll, all of which are typical topics at a peer advice meeting. Boards are made up of non-competing

Arnold Goldman, principal, The Alternative Board

members so no member is locked into industry thinking, which helps open members' eyes to new possibilities because the areas of expertise include those in which a member normally wouldn't have access. Peer advice groups are not professional peers that think the same way. Rather, they provide insights to areas where the owner may not have experience, training or expertise. Generally, peer advisory boards are large enough to be effective, yet small enough to work on each member's specific needs. The support received from becoming a part of a regular peer meeting also allows the owner to set goals and plan their business long term. The long term planning takes the owner out of managing day-to-day tasks so they can focus on more important strategic goals of the company. Owners may find themselves involved in fixing individual problems or planning using the "idea of the week." Peer advisory boards can help the owner organize and lead the business to improved growth and efficiency. Members of groups must be willing to make the investment, put his/her business issues on the table and share his/her knowledge with other members. The valuable advice given in peer advisory meetings is real-life - not theory - and shows the power that is created when business owners come together. For more information about The Alternative Board, call Arnold Goldman at 305-867-7770 or visit TheAlternativeBoard.com

Architecture for the people BY STÉPHANE L’ÉCUYER, ARCHITECT With population aging in many accidential societies, architecture must answer the shift in the distribution of the population towards greater ages by building adequate facilities and better space planning. IDEA is presently designing one of the biggest Assisted Living Facilities (ALF) complex in Canada which will be composed of over a thousand units when completed. Over 50 different types of units, mostly 1 and 2 bedroom aparatments, are offered for rental and some units can be adapted to their first occupant. Projects with less units have also been designed by IDEA for 50 to 150 apartment buildings with all services to residents. Architecture has the challenge of inventing new buildings and more humanized structures. No doubt demographic trends in this new century will force architects to design human scaled buildings for our older population. Assisted Living Facilities (ALF) will be smaller, ideally from 50 to 60 units. All

residents of a small or big project should find a “homey atmosphere and welcoming ambiance” and should have the sense of belonging to a community. Meeting places can be located on first floor with access to outside seating in a garden and on every floor with windows overlooking nice landscape architecture, where people can chat, eat, drink, dance, sing and play music with neighbors, friends and family. Direct view and access to natural light, sun and grass are a primary design requirement for any residential complex and especially for people staying at home all day long. Along with a fireplace in a common living room, water will be present inside and outside in the garden. The Architect is to make sure that all elements are present to achieve the quality of life for residents (interior design, colors, finishes, lighting, ventilation, services) and to maintain an ambiance of security and confidence. Every single individual is important to us and each client is the most important for IDEA. The best solution will respect the program and the budget, and will have the design quality in all visual amenities. We have architects, interior designers and engi-

neers with more than 25 years of experience inside an organization of over 1000 qualified employees in the USA, Canada and worldwide. Raising the bar through green design Since 2007, IDEA can count on two LEED accredited professionals in order to promote and bring sustainable design directly to the clients. When it comes down to Assisted Living Facilities, a first LEED project aiming for the Silver rating has just been completed by IDEA. “While smaller in scale, the challenges were completely different,” says Maxime-Karl Gilbert, LEED specialist for a 6.5 M dollar project, which will allow people with minor loss of autonomy to benefit from 62 new units. Keeping in mind the respect of the site and the importance of minimizing the consequences of the construction on the nearby river, the team of professionals incorporated many LEED solutions in the concept. They integrated storage rooms for the col-

lection of recyclables, adopted a construction waste management policy, asked for the purchase of regional and low-emitting materials, reduced the energetic consumption of the building with computer simulations and also reduced light pollution. Coupled with a solar wall on the south side of the building and a geothermic system, owners will be able to cut down HVAC costs by more than $50,000 per year. By bringing sustainable design into the heart of the Assisted Living Facilities, IDEA addresses two of the most challenging issues of the new born 21st century, and hopes that its dedication to sound architecture will bring the firm to develop new horizons in the near future. For more information on the AVEC program, please visit IDEA’s website www.absolute-idea.com. IDEA is located at 20900 NE 30 Ave., Suite 914, Aventura, 305-792-0015 or on the web at www.absolute-idea.com.

Tackle your debt wisely; don’t fall prey to credit repair scams

Al Sunshine 4 YOUR MONEY If you’ve been trying to figure out how you will get out of debt this year, you’re not alone! The average household has $9,000 in credit card debt. That comes out to a trillion dollars for consumers nationwide. Major layoffs are not helping the situation. Macy’s recently announced it would be cutting 7,000 jobs across the United States. As a result, thousands of people are losing their financial resources to combat accumulating debt. One suggestion is to seek help from non-profit organizations such as the Consolidated Credit Counseling. Howard Dvorkin runs Consolidated Credit Counseling and says there are a number of steps you must take to get rid of debt. He advises, “The first thing is stop using your credit cards and pay cash when you can. You’re not going to get ahead paying on credit and trying to make minimum payments.” Step Two? Dvorkin warns, “So many people are

Never Pay Another Expensive Repair Again

afraid to see what they owe. But you can’t put a game plan together if you don’t know what you’re up against. Find the debt with the highest interest rate and start there.” Last but not least, make a budget, and stick to it. Everyday, companies target consumers who have poor credit histories with promises to clean up their credit report. The truth is, these companies can’t deliver an improved credit report. It’s illegal: No one can remove accurate negative information from your credit report. So after you pay them hundreds or thousands of dollars in fees, you’re left with the same credit report and someone else has your money. However, there are some companies you can trust. Nationwide consumer reporting companies such as Equifax, Experian and TransUnion are required to provide you with a free copy of your credit report once every 12 months, if you ask for it. The government entitles every consumer with the right to order a free annual credit report. To order, visit annualcreditreport.com, call 1877-322-8228 or mail Annual Credit Report Request Service, PO Box 105281, Atlanta, GA 30348-5281. Keep eating - stop cheating BY BARI AUERBACH Wouldn’t it be great if you could keep eating all day, stop cheating on a diet and finally fit into your “skinny” jeans?! Weight loss consultants agree that to lose weight, you need to eat smaller portions more frequently. This is an ideal way to avoid over-eating and keep the metabolic rate up. Snacking on fruits and vegetables or eating other healthy snacks between meals will keep you satisfied and provide the body with necessary energy so the “fat-storing” mode will not be triggered. When you don’t eat for three or more hours, your body isn’t receiving nutrients needed to function. This can cause you to enter a preservation mode, activating the “starvation trigger.” This is a survival instinct that slows down the metabolic rate to ensure the body will burn fat as slowly as possible so it can maintain the minimum energy level to survive over a period of time under these harsh conditions…this is the mode where fat is preserved. Another thing that happens in this mode is that the production of certain enzymes that turn the food into fat is increased - so when you have your next meal, more fat than usual can be stored in the body. Not eating for more than three hours can also cause an appetite increase so you may eat more than usual and still feel unsatisfied. To lose weight, you need to eat smaller portions more frequently. Eating this way every two or three hours is an ideal way to avoid over-eating and keep the metabolic rate up. Snacking on fruits and vegetables or eating other healthy snacks between meals can help keep you

feeling satisfied and provide the body with necessary energy so the “fat-storing” mode will not be triggered. So instead of eating all your food for the day in two or three sittings, eat four to six smaller meals throughout the day. Just make sure the total calories in your small meals, when added up, don’t exceed the amount of calories you should be consuming each day. To avoid feeling hungry while losing weight: *Eat frequent small meals to fire up your metabolism and stop feeling hungry. *Eat plenty of protein to feel full. *Fill up on fiber. High fiber foods add bulk to your diet, making you feel satisfied longer. *Drink a lot of water. *Eat slowly to give your brain a chance to signal that you’re full. *Don’t ignore your body’s hunger signals. *Eat a light meal or snack at the first sign of hunger. *Avoid fad diets that promise overnight weight loss results. *Manage stress without turning to food. *Get plenty of sleep. Being well rested allows you to fight off hunger pains and avoid low energy levels.
