"Two thumbs up" for Aventura Hospital's Emergency Room! Selma Ross of Biscayne Cove didn't expect to wind up in a hospital that sunny morning in Aventura as she went downstairs to the garage to get her car. But within minutes of walking out of her building, she fell onto the ground, and was crying out in pain when her friend Arthur Barr was walking into the building. Within seconds, Barr picked her up and they were on their way to the Emergency Room at Aventura Hospital & Medical Center. "I couldn't believe how fast and how

efficiently they took care of Selma!", said Barr. "She was treated with great care and concern...and found that she suffered a broken elbow, and placed her arm in a splint. They checked her thoroughly for any other injuries, and found that everything else seemed fine." "I'm so pleased with the immediate care I received at Aventura Hospital's ER.....I truly feel it was 'loving care' --.they really surpassed my expectations!" said Ross.

The event, which takes place from 12 noon to 2 p.m., will feature storytelling, a question and answer session, a live performance, a raffle to win tickets to Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida's "Chipollino," and even a chance to meet the author himself, David Ira Rottenburg. hand to answer questions and sign books. In addition, Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida and David Ira Rottenburg will be traveling to several public schools in the surrounding area, and putting on a special program that centers around the book. The education outreach program will combine the imagination shown in the book with some fun activities related to dance, and is meant to inspire young children to become more interested in the arts. Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida will receive a percentage of the profits from all books purchased during the event through March 2nd. Be sure to present your special book fair voucher, available through the ballet, or mention that you are a supporter of the ballet, in order for the company to be given the percentage. VIEWPOINT New American Crisis BY BEN MANSKI Unhinged. Absurd. Outrageous. That's how you could describe the Supreme Court's recent decision in Citizens United vs. Federal Election Commission. Unfortunately, the decision was much, much worse than that. How much worse? You might have some idea if you've ever found yourself facing foreclosure on your home; or worked at a company that was downsizing and laying people off; or enrolled in a college where the tuition keeps doubling; or faced salary freezes year after year, even while the cost of living rises. Most of us know how those things feel. It's the feeling of losing control over your destiny. Get used to that feeling. It has just become what it feels like to be a citizen of the United States of America. Writing for the majority, Justice Anthony Kennedy asserted that, "By taking the right to speak from some and giving it to others, the Government deprives the disadvantaged person or class of the right to use speech to strive to establish worth, standing, and respect for the speaker's voice." The "disadvantaged person" Kennedy referred to is the corporation. In law, this means that corporations now enjoy constitutional protections against government regulation. Like people. Yes, that's crazy. Justice John Paul Stevens certainly thought the majority decision was perverse, correctly observing in his dissent that, "corporations have no consciences, no beliefs, no feelings, no thoughts, no desires. . . [and] are not themselves members of 'We the People' by whom and for whom our Constitution was established." But the decision is worse than perverse. Unless corrected, it is the final end of the American experiment in self-government. Corporations aren't private entities and they certainly aren't people. They consolidate wealth. The largest among them are giants in comparison to our state and local governments. For these reasons, throughout U.S. history, beginning especially with the Revolution, the public has pressed the government to keep corporations under control. The Court's judicial activism in

Citizens United may have put an end to that control. If corporations are persons protected by the Constitution, decades of rules protecting consumers from unsafe working conditions, unsafe products, harmful pollution, and other ills are very likely to be declared unconstitutional by the federal courts. So much for laws enacted to "promote the general welfare" and the will of "We the People." Throughout its history, the Supreme Court has often been on the wrong side of American democracy. It ruled that free states had to return fugitives from slavery to the South, and that African Americans weren't fully human beings. It decided that women weren't people for the purposes of the Constitution. It protected segregation. It defended the use of concentration camps for Japanese Americans and upheld the suspension of habeas corpus. It handed nearly all war powers to the executive branch. It decided that U.S. citizens have no constitutional right to vote, and ignored both precedent and the actual vote in deciding several presidential elections to its own liking. In each case, the Court's decision unleashed a storm. And in each case, Americans responded as you'd expect from freeborn people. This time is proving no different. Within a few days of the ruling in Citizens United, over 50,000 Americans from across the country launched MovetoAmend.org-a movement to renew the Constitution with a series of democracy amendments, beginning, first and foremost, with ending the reign of the corporation. Constitutional amendments don't come easy. But neither is it easy to live in a country whose destiny is owned and controlled by a few. These are the times that try people's souls. This is an American crisis. -Ben Manski, an attorney, is executive director of the Liberty Tree Foundation, an Institute for Policy Studies associate fellow, and a member of the Executive Committee of Move to Amend: The Campaign to Legalize Democracy. http://movetoamend.org/

The Kids are all Right BY JENNIFER DOAK Being a young American today can be discouraging. Things don't look so good for us, even since Bush left office, leaving behind an awful lot of cleaning up for us "Millennials" to do. BusinessWeek dubbed us a "lost generation," because 18 percent of us can't find work. Those who can are paid less than our counterparts were in earlier decades, and many college grads among us are saddled with thousands of dollars in loans. If the Obama administration's proposal to federalize and reduce the student loan burden goes through (a big if), that's a start. But with more than $50,000 in college debt (and that's on the low end), I can confirm it will be a while before I have the cash to buy a home, invest in a retirement fund, or even start a family. Heck, I can barely afford to go home for Christmas. Our predecessors deregulated industry, thoughtfully ensuring that our food and water aren't as safe as they should be. Of course, in 2007, 13.2 million of us under 35 didn't have health care so there's little to be done if we get sick. Since the Baby Boomers and the oldest Generation Xers refused to seriously research alternative energy, we inherited a nasty oil addiction that led politicians to send thousands of my cohorts to fight an unwinnable war in Iraq. Meanwhile, it looks like those in charge are making more than ever, even in these pinched days. They also say we're not really mad, and that we'll go right on taking it like workers have for decades. They'll make a glib reference to Facebook or Twitter before lamenting how nobody today protests like they used to. Then they smugly destroy a few more acres of rain forest.

The derision isn't universal-after all, I'm talking about our parents, professors, and employers. A recent Wall Street Journal article observed that Baby Boomers encouraged us, their children, to negotiate, to achieve, to be conciliatory, and to think of ourselves as winners. But, perhaps unconsciously, the policies they shaped have us poised to lose. So guess what? We aren't taking it anymore. People under 35 are harnessing technology and willpower, just as previous generations did, to achieve amazing things. We're crowdsourcing, not outsourcing. We're creating open-source software and outreach programs to level the digital divide. We organize through social networks and text-message donations. Few of us have seen the movie Network, but we're still raising our virtual window-sashes and yelling to the whole world that we're mad as hell. The best part is that we're taking our upbringing to heart, but not in the way you think. We trend progressive-even the conservatives among us are easygoing when it comes to social issues like gay marriage and the environment. You older folks call us the "trophy generation" because you see us as entitled, but maybe we just want to make sure everybody wins. Millennials are starting to take charge, and we're acting together. This lost generation is finding itself, and when I see what my peers are accomplishing, I start thinking we'll be just fine. --

Rita Regev optimistic about move to Optimar International Realty BY LYNN CARROLL

"There's no such thing as a bad market, only bad marketing," says Broker-Associate Rita Steinfeld Regev. Regev is now based at Optimar International Realty in Sunny Isles Beach, after spending seven years in the Hollywood market. "Of the several agencies that I considered joining, I chose Optimar because of Broker Hernan Gleizer's business acumen," she says. "He has assembled a strong staff that's always there to help. We have a short-sales department and a foreclosure division. The location is ideally situated on Collins Avenue, amidst numerous luxury condos - a significant part of my business." "The market is awesome. It's great," Regev adds. "Savvy buyers know this is absolutely the best time to buy in South Florida. I tell prospective clients, 'Meet with me for half an hour and we can map out our strategy for your needs.' There are some incredible deals out there. Condos and townhouses have been reduced to up to 60% of their pre-2006 value. I recently sold four condos that were in the high $300's for $180- $215K each. "When listing property, my motto is: Marketing + Pricing = SOLD! Sellers must understand that." Regev, fluent in Hebrew, works with many Israeli investors, and is on the Greater Miami Jewish Federation's real estate go-to list. "I love what I do, so real estate is not work for me. I am all about getting the job done efficiently, with confidence and competence. Whether someone is in need of a $800/month rental due to their ensuing eviction or a $10 million strip mall for investment, I want to help any way I can. If you are authentic and sincere in your efforts, and focus on the right things, everything will fall into place seamlessly." Life in the City BY BARI AUERBACH

An Aventura city commissioner hopes to persuade more people to respond to the 2010 census by using the slogan “The Census is Sexy.” But just imagine what could get accomplished if it was considered sexy to do other things besides filling out census forms… “Doing Laundry is Sexy” – If more guys thought they’d get a higher paying job by not wearing the same clothes (repeatedly thrown on the floor), condo laundry rooms would get a lot busier - along with social lives! “Voting is Sexy” – Local elections typically have low voter turnout – but if a new law was enacted banning elected officials indicted for public corruption from ever running again, more people might be motivated to cast a ballot. “Shopping is Sexy” – Supporting goals to stimulate the economy, ladies who are

“Going Green is Sexy” – The city always promotes participation in “go green” initiatives – so while you may see more people being environmentally conscious, don’t expect to find any Sports Illustrated swimsuit issues in recycling bins. ‘The Shuttle is Sexy” – More people might be encouraged to take the Aventura Express shuttle around town if the city made the fleet sexier by putting Mercedes or BMW logos on the back bumpers.

frequent Aventura Mall shoppers know getting an exceptional bargain on a pair of designer shoes can be even more exciting than anticipating the sequel to the Sex and the City movie!

“Is Aventura Sexy?” – Maybe, if “power and money” define sexy - but since this is also a family community, it might be better to borrow the original slogan deeming the 2010 census “easy, important and safe.” After all, it’s “easy” to see why when making an “important” decision about where to live, it’s “safe” to say Aventura is the best choice – and that’s something you can really count on!

Pizza Fusion hosts Aventura Marketing Council SpeedBiz BY LYNN CARROLL

How do you make Aventura's most popular networking event even better? Add one of America's favorite snacks, made with all-natural ingredients. Pizza Fusion, in the Biscayne Commons Shopping Center located at 14185 Biscayne Boulevard, welcomed over 50 AMC members to SpeedBiz, recognized as the best monthly networking event for one-on-one business relationship building. Pizza Fusion is a whole new world of guiltless, healthy eating, serving up not only delicious gourmet pizza but also gourmet sandwiches, salads, desserts, beer and wine untainted by artificial additives such as preservatives, growth hormones, pesticides, nitrates and trans fats, all at affordable prices. Gluten-free and vegan menu options cater to those on special diets. Cesar Conde, managing partner of the North Miami franchise, says all ingredients used are natural, and 75% are organic. Meeting planners take note: packages and platters to

serve large gatherings are available for delivery in Pizza Fusion's company-owned hybrid cars - just one of its many environmental initiatives. After a tasty start to the morning, everyone was geared up for Lightning Biz, the fast-paced business networking event that gives everyone a chance to introduce themselves to dozens of new members in one-on-one encounters. "SpeedBiz gives AMC members an opportunity to meet nearly 30 qualified business prospects within one hour," says AMC Small Business Development Committee Chairman and Aventura Comm. Michael Stern of Stern Bloom Media. "The fast pace of the SpeedBiz format gives everyone an opportunity to exchange snapshots of their company profiles along with contact information and business cards so when the need arises for a particular service, you know exactly who to call!" Despite Florida’s record unemployment and one of the worst foreclosure problems in the country, the latest study out of the University of Florida just found we’re feeling a little better about the future. Researchers found that by all measures we definitely are more economically healthy this year than we were last year. Last year at this time, the stock market was still reeling. Economists say consumer confidence in Florida jumped five points in January. That’s better than expected and it’s the best level in two years. We’re now more optimistic about our family finances, the overall national economy, and statewide business conditions — and it’s putting us back in the mood to consider making some major purchases. The study found that while we’ve managed to dodge hurricanes, we just had a bad freeze that is going to translate into higher produce

prices, so as that filters into the stores. People here in Florida will have some reaction to that. Still, it is the housing market that state researchers now worry about the most. They predict until the state and national economy sees stronger gains and more people get back to work, Florida’s real estate industry will continue to suffer. The UF forecasters predict that as occupancies continue to go down, rental rates will continue to go down across most property types. I’m told there really is a challenge to the fundamentals of real estate and it will continue to be that way so long as there is a high unemployment rate and a lack of confidence in the consumer. Some real estate forecasters predict the overall housing markets statewide may not see significant new growth until 2011 or even later. What’s more, a University of Michigan/ Reuters Study on Consumer Sentiment just found the highest national numbers since January 2008. In seems that in spite of recent downturns on Wall Street, Main Street is apparently starting to feel a little better about the future.

Quebec Chamber Trade Mission BY JEAN FRANCOIS GERVAIS I first would like to introduce myself, I am Jean Francois Gervais, and have been director of International Design Engineering & Architecture since last summer. I moved to South Florida after spending 10 years in Philadelphia, where I had the chance to contribute to the design and construction of some of the most flamboyant casino/hotel projects of Las Vegas and Atlantic City. I will share with you some of the experience I have acquired as an architect, in a string of articles to come in this paper on green building and architecture. In this first article, I would like to make an exception, and tell you about the upcoming trade mission of the newly created Chamber of Commerce Quebec-Florida. The creation of the Chamber in June 2009 responded to a lack of bilateral connection between Quebec and Florida, two mutually important business partners. The president and co-founder of the Chamber Marcel Racicot, with his experience and multitude of contacts, has considerably contributed to the Chamber’s growth. In less than a year, the CCQF has reached close to 150 members from Canada and United States. Through its mission, the Quebec-Florida Chamber of Commerce supports and promotes economic and commercial development for companies established in Quebec and Florida while providing to its members and partners a networking service to widen their markets. To achieve this, the CCQF has an experienced and diversified board of directors and relies on many professionals, entrepreneurs as well as influential persons from the government, both in Florida and Quebec. IDEA has committed to support

the CCQF in order to encourage Quebec business opportunities. The CCQF holds networking activities as well as monthly conferences and training seminars both in Quebec and Florida to guide its members in their development and to facilitate business relations. The Quebec-Florida Chamber of Commerce, in collaboration with the Minister of Economic Development, Innovation and Export will organize it’s very first trade mission of Quebec companies to Florida from February 23rd to 26th, 2010. Eight dynamic companies in various industry sectors are taking part in this mission. Shockform, L-Ipse, Bio-K, Les Vergers Lafrance, Commerce Care Management, Habitat Construction, Group Net Tech and Les Serres St-Laurent will attend various networking events and meet with hundreds of Florida business contacts and entrepreneurs, take part in conferences, and site visits and most importantly, participate in many one-on-one meetings throughout the week in Miami-Dade, Palm Beach and Broward Counties. Thanks to the great work of Elaine Adler and her staff, the Aventura Marketing Council will host on Wednesday, February 24th, the breakfast event “Doing Business with Quebec, Canada”, sponsored by Aventura Hospital and IDEA. The meeting will bring together over 250 participants to discuss and promote business relations between Quebec and Aventura businesses. For more information on the QuebecFlorida Chamber of commerce or if you want to become a member, please contact Catherine Dubois, Marketing Director at Catherine.dubois@ccquebecflorida.com or at (954) 607-1530 x 226 or visit the CCQF web site at www.ccquebecflorida.com.

Concentration BY PATRICIA C. FRANK The ability to concentrate is a powerful and effective technique that guarantees success and happiness in life. Concentration is the ability to focus your attention on one detail, element, issue or object. It is the ability to think and do and to be totally involved in the subject at hand. You become so involved that you are not aware of the things and people around you. You are completely focused on what you are thinking or doing. In order to achieve the maximum benefits from concentration, you must block out potential distractions. Will power is not the solution. It is a very helpful to learn how to meditate. Once you learn, meditate every day. When your body is in a relaxed state, your mind becomes more receptive and it is easier to program visualizations and to focus your concentration to achieve certain results. Before you begin, decide on your ideal environment. Tailor it to your specific and individual personality traits and needs; silence or soft music, sounds of the ocean or soft rain, a large uncluttered work space or a small cluttered space. Recreate the

conditions from your past that worked for you. Prepare everything before you begin Have what you will need on hand and nearby so you do not have to keep jumping up and fetching things. If you are going to fax or email your resume have it ready to go. Make sure that you can work without interruptions for a designated amount of time. If your mind wanders to the anticipated end result of your project you will not be able to concentrate and focus on what you are doing. This will set you up for achievement fears. Quiet that part of your mind that worries and becomes anxious. There is also an exercise you can use to help you focus. Sit up straight and get comfortable. Light a candle and focus on the flame for at least two minutes. Then close your eyes and keep the image of the flame in your mind’s eye. If you lose the image open your eyes and gaze at the flame for a few more moments. Do not strain your eyes. Stay relaxed. This exercise allows you to develop your ability to focus on an image or on what you are doing and to block out all distractions. You will be amazed at the benefits. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. She can be reached at 305-788-4864, 212-308-0309.

‘Extreme meal makeovers’

Kampai!

Japanese Restaurant

3575 NE 207 Street Aventura, FL 33180 • Suite B12

305-931-6410 BY BARI AUERBACH If you’ve got too much on your plate to focus on figuring out how to eat nutritious foods that will help you keep your fitness resolutions – here are some “extreme meal makeovers” providing nutritious and easy quick fixes… B r e a k f a s t B e f o r e : Bowl of cereal or energy bar…The problem with this typical “on the go” breakfast is the grams of sugar in most cereals as well as the milk. End even though you may think that energy bar is good for you – check the label and you may be surprised to find it has as much sugar as a candy bar. B r e a k f a s t M a k e o v e r : Instant oatmeal (plain flavor) only takes a few minutes in the microwave and now you can buy pourable egg whites so you can eliminate cracking time! Add a green vegetable like spinach to make an omelet and a few slices of avocado and you’ve got the perfect energizing, morning rush breakfast! L u n c h B e f o r e : Foot-long turkey sub on white with mayo and cheese, a bag of Sun Chips and a bottle of Arizona flavored iced tea…Even if you’re choosing to “eat fresh” be careful not to corrupt a healthful choice like turkey with high calorie condiments, chips that will go straight to your hips and sugary drinks. L u n c h M a k e o v e r : Six-inch turkey sub on whole wheat with mustard – no cheese – a bag of apple slices and a bottle of water…If you frequently eat out and want to lose weight or stay in shape phrases like “no butter; sauce on

the side; grilled not fried; and steamed not sautéed” should become part of your ordering out repertoire. D i n n e r B e f o r e : Salad with Ranch dressing, dark meat chicken, baked potato, asparagus in Hollandaise sauce…Eating a large high caloric meal in the evening can be deadly to any diet – especially if you can’t remember how many pieces of bread you ate and then go to bed shortly after eating. D i n n e r M a k e o v e r : Salad with balsamic vinegar and olive oil, white meat chicken, sweet potato (lower glycemic than white potato), steamed asparagus…By adding a leaner protein and cutting out fattening salad dressing and sauces you can enjoy a healthful dinner, be thinner and consider yourself the biggest winner ! S n a c k B e f o r e : Beware of all the sugar hiding in snacks like granola and flavored yogurts that seem deceptively dietetic. Start reading food labels and ask for the nutrition info before you start sipping that grande “skinny vanilla latte” (28 g. sugar/30 g.carbs) that may not be helping you lose those last 10 pounds. S n a c k M a k e o v e r : Portion control is key – but any of these snacks are smart choices: Nuts like almonds and walnuts; strawberries (great source of calcium too!); hard boiled eggs; turkey slices; Jay Robb whey protein shake (individual packets available at Whole Foods Market) small can of white tuna in water; hummus; guacamole; cottage cheese; low fat cheese; whole grain crackers; acai berry sugar-free Jello cups.

The Recovery Act, one year later BY CONGRESSWOMAN DEBBIE WASSERMAN SCHULTZ On the anniversary of the signing of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (commonly referred to as the Stimulus), it is time to take stock of its impact on Florida and our nation as a whole. One year in, the evidence is clear – and growing by the day – that the Recovery Act

is working. It has cushioned us from the greatest economic crisis since the Great Depression and has laid a new foundation for our economic growth. The road to recovery is still long, but we are seeing a real difference for millions of Americans and small businesses. The Recovery Act has already created or sustained about 2 million jobs overall – including an estimated 35,000 jobs here in Florida. By the end of the year, this Act is on track to support 3.5 million jobs. President Obama and Congress have

been working hard to get our economy back on track after the budget mess left by the Bush Administration, which saw the slowest job creation in 75 years, the longest recession since the Great Depression, huge deficits and the nearly doubling of the national debt. But after this period of crisis, we can see our economy is beginning to heal. In the fourth quarter of 2009, it grew 5.7 percent—the largest gain in six years, and something many economists say is due in large part to the Recovery Act. The effect of this Act is clear: It is helping give Americans the opportunities to live economically stable lives. Most Americans don’t realize the largest single part of the Recovery Act is tax cuts – making up one-third of the package. Currently 95 percent of American workers are receiving one of the fastest and broadest tax cuts in history, implemented by immediately having more money in their paychecks. These tax cuts ensure that families can pay their bills, and they boost commerce for local businesses. And that is just one of 25 tax cuts within the Recovery Act. There are tax cuts for small businesses, first-time homebuyers, families sending kids to college, and many others. Since the Recovery Act was signed into law a year ago, we have made loans to more than 42,000 small businesses through the Recovery Act (including roughly 1,200 Florida businesses), providing them with nearly $20 billion in much-needed capital. These loans to small businesses have allowed companies to stay open, kept people employed, and prevented a deeper economic downturn. The Recovery Act is ensuring families can make ends meet by offering unemployment benefits to Floridians who have lost their jobs, helping families pay for health care, and providing a $250 check last year to seniors and disabled veterans. To improve our quality of life and make our communities safer, the Recovery Act is saving hundreds of thousands of jobs for teachers, police and firefighters across America. In fact, here in Florida, 18,000 of these jobs were saved or created. We are rebuilding Florida through investments in infrastructure as well, by funding projects including express hybrid buses on I-95, Everglades restoration, road improvements, and clean water. Here in Florida, 556 infrastructure projects are cur-

rently under construction and these investments have created roughly 4,200 jobs. Such projects have twofold results: they stimulate our economic growth with jobs now, and improve our infrastructure for the future. The upturn in our economy is noticeable. In January 2009, before enactment of the Recovery Act, 779,000 Americans lost their jobs. A year later, job losses have been reduced to 20,000 jobs—a 97% reduction from what President Bush left behind. As President Bush left office, America’s GDP fell by 6.4%. By the end of 2009, our economy grew by 5.7%—the fastest three-quarter swing in almost 3 decades. Economists, regardless of their political views, acknowledge that the Recovery Act played a significant role in this economic growth. Other positive signs for families and American businesses include the rebound of the stock market – a relief to the many whose retirement savings plummeted – and American manufacturing, which has grown for the last six months—reaching its highest level in 6 years. The Recovery Act was never meant to replace dollar for dollar or job for job what we lost – no single program ever could. But nearly 15 million Americans are out of work through no fault of their own and many others are struggling to make ends meet. This is why the Recovery Act was designed to spend money gradually in order to sustain a true recovery – with peak spending occurring early this year. One year in, experts ranging from private forecasters to Governors on both sides of the aisle say the Recovery Act has helped pull us back from the brink of economic disaster and is helping lay a firm foundation for our economic recovery. I will keep fighting to create good private sector jobs. If you need help, I want to hear from you. Nissan Sentra is a fun-to-drive compact sedan Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS The Nissan Sentra has established itself as a stylish and fun-to-drive compact sedan, and it continues in that tradition in 2010, but with a host of enhancements to the styling and the interior, as well as some new technology to improve efficiency. For 2010, Sentra is offered in six trim levels — 2.0, 2.0 S, 2.0 SR, 2.0 SL and two performance-oriented models, SE-R and SE-R Spec V. Sentra 2.0 models come with a standard 140-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and Nissan’s Xtronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) on all models except the Sentra 2.0, which is offered with a choice of CVT or a six-speed manual transmission. Built on Nissan’s global “C” platform, Sentra’s exterior reflects the design of other Nissan vehicles and has a long wheelbase, short front and rear overhangs, crisp character lines and large doors, with a high deck in the rear that accentuates the roomy cabin and cargo area.

For 2010, all models have revised headlight and taillight designs, while Sentra 2.0, 2.0 S and 2.0 SL models have a new refined front fascia and grille. The 2.0 S and 2.0 SL also feature new fog light covers and new body side moldings with chrome inserts and a new chrome trunk finisher. Three new exterior colors also are available — Anodized Orange, Espresso Black and Aspen White. Inside, Sentra is roomy and has plenty of hauling space. With a trunk that has 13.1 cubic feet of cargo space, it’s great for carrying long, bulky items by using the oversized pass-through opening. Combined with the 60/40 split double-fold rear seat (the cushion folds forward, allowing the seat back to fold down), Sentra has good cargo flexibility for carrying snowboards, hockey sticks and even bicycles. Sentra has revised seat cloth and door trim and the instrument panel accents and illumination also have been changed. Other major changes include the separation of leather seating into an optional package on the Sentra 2.0 SL model and the addition of new Technology and Navigation Packages for the SL model. The Convenience Package is an added option for the 2.0 SR model and the Sentra 2.0 SL adds standard Vehicle

Dynamic Control (VDC) and Traction Control System (TCS). Wheel designs also have been revised for 2010, with new 16inch wheel covers (2.0 S) and new 16-inch aluminum-alloy wheels (2.0 SL). The Sentra 2.0 SR, our test vehicle, continues with a new sporty appearance package, which includes a sport grille, unique front and rear sport fascias, side sill spoilers, rear decklid spoiler with integrated

brake light, smoked headlights and taillights, driving lights, exhaust finisher and “SR” badging on the rear deck. The base price is $17,180.

First TV Dating Game for Seniors to be taped at Mardi Gras Casino Thousands expected to witness and participate in the fun and excitement of Senior Prom BY MARGARET KESSLER Make a date with Senior Prom, the country’s first and only television dating game and senior exhibition for adults 50+. The show is coming to Mardi Gras Casino in Hallandale Beach on Wednesday, March 3rd to tape the pilot episode. Thousands of seniors will converge on Mardi Gras Casino - South Florida’s number one gaming center - for an odds-on favorite great time and for the chance to meet Mr. or Ms. Right in front of the TV cameras and to the cheers of onlookers and friends. WHEN: Wednesday, March 3 10:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. WHERE: Mardi Gras Casino 831 North Federal Hwy (US1 at Pembroke Road) Hallandale Beach “Senior Prom is America’s first and only television dating game for adults 50+ - a market sector that is growing exponentially,” said Margaret Kessler, project manager for the Senior Prom TV show and senior exhibition. Kessler says TV networks historically have coveted the more youthful 18 – 49 advertiser demographic, but are starting to come around to the ‘senior reality’ as America grays. “Seniors account for over $1.6 trillion in spending power and a net worth that’s nearly twice the U.S. average. Seniors own more than threefourths of the nation’s financial wealth,” said Kessler.

The event is sponsored by Mardi Gras Casino, Humana and TMR Multimedia. ABOUT MARDI GRAS CASINO Mardi Gras Casino is located at 831 North Federal Highway on the corner of US-1 and Pembroke Road. The casino offers over 70,000 square feet of casino excitement featuring 1,300 Las Vegas-style slot machines including new linked Progressive slots, video roulette, and virtual blackjack; 24-hour action packed poker; simulcast and greyhound racing; and various dining options. For more information, call 954924-3200 or visit www.playmardigras.com <http://www.playmardigras.com> . ABOUT HUMANA Humana Inc., headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky, is one of the nation’s largest publicly traded health and supplemental benefits companies, with approximately 104 million medical members and 6.8 million specialty members. Humana is a fullservice benefits solutions company, offering a wide array of health and supplementary benefit plans for employer groups, government programs and individuals. Humana is Florida’s largest Medicare health benefits company with nearly half a million members statewide, including more than 125,000 Medicare members in South Florida. AZALEA GARDENS: Assisted Living Resort-Style Community During our recent senior photo shot, several participants asked whether we are a resort or an assisted living community. Azalea Gardens is an assisted living community offering resort style living. We are a charming community designed to help those who need assistance with activities of daily living. Just like family, we provide the help they need to maintain a rich, full life while remaining as independent as possible. Our single goal is to provide a resort-like environment, filled with beauty, security and loving care. Simply take a look at the faces of our residents and families, you’ll know that it is true.

We treat each of our residents as individuals who are entitled to respect, time and attention. We offer an exclusive and secured environment tailored to each individual, with amenities such as a Japanese Koi view-

ing pond, waterfalls and a tropical butterfly garden, all surrounding a charming gazebo. Azalea Gardens has exceeded expectations in fulfilling an ever growing need to keep seniors out of nursing homes by providing high levels of assistance with activities of daily life in a beautiful home-like environment. While most assisted living facilities have a policy requiring residents to be independent in their activities of daily living, Azalea Gardens accepts residents who are low functioning and requiring maximum assistance with activities of daily living. Activities of daily living include: bathing, dressing, grooming, ambulation, continency, eating, as well as dementia. Azalea Gardens is equipped with the most state-of-the-art equipment and systems. The kitchen is designed, built and equipped to include the latest industrial grade convection ovens, steam tables, heating lamps, ice making machines and more. The facility has a 24-hour emergency response system with nurse call devices located at each bed and in each bathroom. The building has an integrated fire protection system to include fire sprinklers and early warning features, monitored 24 hours each day by a central monitoring station. The individual suites are completely furnished, including television and telephone. The bathrooms are all substantially in compliance with ADA and feature the latest in design for “roll-in” showers. At Azalea Gardens, it doesn’t take long for you to feel like you are at a resort. Our residents are surrounded by those who truly care. Living here becomes so much more than simply getting help with a few daily activities. It’s about receiving that personalized care within a very special neighborhood filled with very special people. As people experience Azalea Gardens for the first time, we often hear how comfortable they immediately feel. Of course, one of the main reasons for that feeling is our residents themselves. They are quick to reach out to new neighbors and friends. Another reason for this unsurpassed level of comfort

is our outstanding staff. At Azalea Gardens, you will be served by an exceptionally dedicated and caring professional staff who genuinely love what they do, and it shows! The services rendered well surprass the requirements set by law. Maria Soto commented, “this is a 24 hour 7 day per week schedule staffed with certified nurse assistants (CNA), to assist with keeping medications in order, follow through with doctors and other health care professionals, including blood work and x-rays. We help to complete any medical testing and get the results back to the doctor and coordinate the follow-up visit.” Variety is the spice of life, and variety is what we offer. Our activities and social program is designed to blend the different interests of all our residents and develop camaraderie between our residents, families and staff. Caring for the special needs of dementia calls for an extraordinary balance of professionalism and sensitivity. With this in mind, Azalea Gardens’ memory care provides residents a home-like atmosphere of warmth, acceptance and understanding. We provide care for residents with dementia, and other related diseases, such as Parkinson’s, poststroke and others. A full schedule of events includes crafts, games, shopping trips, barber and beauty shop visits, and other regular activities, on campus and off. We pamper our residents with therapy sessions, with the use of hot cloths, hand and facial massages.. Our afternoon socials invite our residents to make their own smoothies, frosties, Shirley Temples, and other gourmet snacks. There is weekly entertainment, picnics in the park, Saturday barbecues at Azalea Gardens with family and outside friends invited, and regularly scheduled services with

neighborhood religious leaders. Being in our ninth year of operations, we are always nearly at capacity. This success has been due to the basic principle of servicing and pampering our residents. Our staff-to-resident ratio exceeds any other facility of its type. Shared suite rates are $1,981 per month, and includes all amenities. Private suites are based on availability. “Knowing funds are always a challange, we provide assistance with funding programs such as Long TermCare Diversion Program and the Veteran’s Administration, based upon eligibility.” Azalea Gardens is an intimate thirty-five resident Assisted Living Facility nestled at 1701 Mayo St., Hollywood, in the vicinity of Young Circle, Harrison St. and the Downtown Redevelopment District.

Ros-Lehtinen Says UN Fecklessness worsening despite U.S. funding increases BY LEE STEPHENS U.S. Rep. Ileana RosLehtinen (R-FL), Ranking Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, commented today on recent developments regarding the United Nations. Statement by Ros-Lehtinen: “The UN’s doctrine of ‘see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil’ has reduced the UN to the role of world’s leading appeaser – paid for by U.S. taxpayers. “Iran’s ongoing brutal crackdown against dissidents should put the regime in Tehran under harsh scrutiny by human rights watchdogs. But in the fantasyland that is the UN, Iran is eligible to and could soon join the Human Rights Council, already a rogues’ gallery. “The Cuban regime has already been permitted to serve on the Human Rights Council, its gulags, political prisoners, and tyranny notwithstanding. That legacy helps explain why the Council has been silent as Castro’s protégé, Hugo Chavez, seizes control of the media in Venezuela and snuffs out any political opposition. “Likewise, after reportedly allowing UN

funds to potentially benefit the North Korean regime, the UN Development Program is resuming operations in North Korea, hiring staff from lists handpicked by the regime. “While dictators get whitewashes and benefits, the UN never misses an opportunity to target the democratic, Jewish state of Israel. Last year’s ‘Goldstone Report’ illustrates the anti-freedom, anti-Israel bias which deeply pervades the UN system. “Yet, without demanding reform first, the administration has embraced greater U.S. ‘engagement’ in the UN, including membership on the dictatorship-infested Human Rights Council. “Despite U.S. outreach, the UN’s fecklessness has gotten worse. Instead of legitimizing flawed UN bodies and sending billions more U.S. taxpayer dollars for the UN’s disposal, the administration must demand sweeping, real reform first. Enough is enough.” Note: Ros-Lehtinen is the author of the United Nations Transparency, Accountability and Reform Act (H.R. 557), which conditions U.S. funding to the UN on the implementation of concrete, structural, sweeping reforms throughout the UN system. This legislation enjoys the support of over 100 cosponsors.

If you are not a parent, you may be doing some study on your own. Gemini - You may expect some sudden interest in your love life. Your friends and companions may have some wonderful suggestions for you - ask their advice. Cancer - You will be asking yourself how you got so lucky this week. Someone will likely offer you some kind of plum assignment or there is a job opportunity coming that you could only describe as a dream come true. You could get paid to do something you'd happily do for free. Leo - You have a lot of compassion for others this week - the plight of a child may move you to actions you would not normally consider. You may be seeking a lasting outlet for feelings that did not seem important to you before, because you want to share something you have learned. While in some cases this may be traumatic, in all cases, it is a necessary prelude to getting help and healing for a family member who is suffering with some form of selfinflicted trauma or heartache.

You may find money while cleaning up, or there is a check in the mail, or you may hear from your employer that your budget is about to get a much-needed booster shot. Just don't spend it all at the local hardware shop. You are in a redecorating mood.

Sagittarius - The atmosphere turns dramatically romantic this week, and just in time, as far as you are concerned. If you are single, you'll have wonderful opportunities to meet new people. If you are married, it's a terrific time to take your mate out for a long overdue treat. Capricorn - Your intuition is powerful and strong this week, but you may find to works better in and around your family and home neighborhood, less so in and around the workplace, or when directed towards career issues. The workplace may bring mixed results this week.

Aquarius - You have some interesting phone calls heading your way this week. Friends, companions and your love partner all bring you good news. If you are single, one of your friends could be planning a blind date, or a sneaky introduction to another friend.

Pisces - You can have a lot of fun if you surround yourself with children this week. If you are not a parent borrow some from your friends, neighbors or a sibling for a sporting event or some kind of playful fun, and give their hardworking parents a well-deserved break at the same time. 1000 Kane Concourse Bay Harbor, FL 33154
