Mount Sinai Medical Center: The only Florida hospital offering Hybrid Maze Procedure Dr. Angelo LaPietra a leader in closed-chest procedure to treat atrial fibrillation Chronic atrial fibrillation (A Fib) patients in South Florida can rest easier knowing that one area medical center - Mount Sinai Heart Institute in Miami Beach - is the only Florida hospital performing the Hybrid Maze Procedure. For persistent A Fib sufferers, convergent endo-epicardial ablation, commonly referred to as the Hybrid Maze Procedure, may eliminate symptoms that medications and single ablation treatments generally cannot. Mount Sinai's Dr. Angelo LaPietra is a leader in the closed-chest cath lab procedure, which utilizes the combined approach of surgical and electrophysiological techniques to improve the prospects for chronic A Fib patients, considered the most challenging of all to treat. "Single ablation procedures are only effective about 50-60% of the time, and medications often leave patients 'feel- Dr. Angelo LaPietra ing sick' all the time," La Pietra said. "Right now, Hybrid Maze is the only available treatment that truly improves their lifestyle." According to LaPietra, who began performing the procedure in May, initial studies have shown Hybrid Maze is effective in 85-90% of patients who remained in normal sinus rhythm during the first six to eight months after undergoing the procedure. A Fib is an irregular and often rapid heart rhythm caused by abnormal electrical impulses in the heart. Multiple impulses travel through the atria at the same time, causing irregular, disorganized, chaotic, and very rapid contractions and discomfort. The benefits of Mount Sinai's Hybrid Maze Procedure, such as eliminating discomfort and daily medication regimens, come as welcome news to A Fib patients, particularly those with large atria that leads to persistent or chronic A Fib who are not candidates for traditional single ablation. Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach is among Florida's most renowned heart hospitals. New York's Columbia University Medical Center is ranked among the nation's top cardiovascular programs. The two centers have joined forces to take the best heart care and make it better for South Florida through the newly established Mount Sinai Heart Institute, A Partnership with New York's Columbia University. The relationship was developed to improve care through collaboration. For more information call 305-674-2121 or visit msmc.com

Credit card industry changes the way that it does business

Al Sunshine 4 YOUR MONEY In case you haven’t heard, the entire credit card industry has changed the way it does business as of Feb. 22. That’s when the latest credit card reforms kicked in. The new rules change the way credit card companies make money, eliminate some of the industry’s most abusive practices, and may also result in millions of dollars in rate hikes and extra fees for consumers. On the upside, it requires credit card companies to give customers at least 45 days notice before any rate hikes. It also limits all those extra over-balance fees card operators add onto your bill if you go over your limits while prohibiting the issuing of credit cards to anyone under 21 years of age without their parents’ permission. Yet at the same time, it also allows the card companies to raise rates almost as high as they

like and also opens the door to possible new extra charges. “Consumers are going to need to check their accounts very closely to monitor extra fees and rate hikes, and then take action accordingly,” warns Annie Wilkinson of the Dade Federal Credit Union. For several months, credit card companies have been raising rates slowly and adding extra fees before the latest restrictions go into effect. In fact, some consumers already reportedly are seeing their rates approach 30 percent or even higher. Consumer groups warn that new extra fees and rate hikes could end up making paying off balances even harder than before the new laws started going into effect. Here’s my advice: Make sure to keep your old credit card bills and compare them to your next statement after Feb. 22. That way you will be able to spot extra charges and fees you’ve never had before. Remember — even more changes are scheduled to go into effect in August. And they’re not always going to be good for consumers.

Watch Al Sunshine’s “4 Your Money” reports Monday-Friday beginning at noon. You may find Al’s blog at <www.cbs4.com/4yourmoney>.

VIEWPOINT Record Bank Profits and the Boondoggle Sidetracks American Dream Foreclosed Crops for Renewable Energy BY MIKE PROKOSCH JP Morgan Chase launched the 2010 Wall Street Bonus Sweepstakes last month. The bank is still losing money on consumer services, but well-heeled investors and financial traders more than made up the difference. The bank announced $11.7 billion in profits and $26.9 billion in compensation, including bonuses that will run in the multimillions for top executives. Then Goldman Sachs reported record profits of $13.4 billion. It's set to dole out a staggering $16.2 billion in compensation and bonuses, which could provide an average of nearly $500,000 per employee. And Morgan Stanley, even having sustained a loss last year, has set aside $14.4 billion for compensation and bonuses. Then there's Roberto Velasquez, a sobering reminder that the foreclosure crisis is still raging. Velasquez, a general contractor, bought a single-family home in Dedham, Massachusetts six years ago and took out a mortgage that turned out to be a predatory time-bomb. After a few affordable years, his adjustable interest rate ballooned and his payments hit $4,800 a month. He kept up, though, until the Wall Street crash knocked the stuffing out of the construction industry. Then he fell three months behind. Velasquez found jobs and came up with the three months' payments, but the bank wouldn't work with him. His home was foreclosed on in November. A local bank offered to buy the home and sell it back to him for its present market valuethe most his bank would get for the house if they sold it at auction. Still no deal. "We did what they asked," Velasquez says, "but they don't want to work with anybody." That kind of arrogance will sink more than Velasquez, his wife, and their two kids. Foreclosures feed on themselves, depressing neighborhood property values and putting ever more people underwater. There were 3.4 million foreclosures in 2009. Experts tell us to expect more this year. Unless the foreclosures stop, the housing market will keep spiraling downward. It will take the building and mortgage industries with it, stalling economic recovery. All of us will be hurting for years

BY LONI KEMP because Washington is refusing to make the banks eat the debt bubble they created. Instead, the bailed-out banks are walking away with record profits and fat bonuses. There's a way to avoid another decade of downturn. United for a Fair Economy's new report, State of the Dream 2010: Drained, outlines key proposals that can stem the massive loss of personal wealth and homes. States and the federal government should put an immediate hold on foreclosures when unemployment causes homeowners to default. Bankruptcy judges must be given the power to cut down mortgages to levels homeowners can afford, as they already can for other types of loans. These reforms would stabilize families and communities, especially communities of color that are seeing hardearned wealth stripped from them at alarming rates. The government would also push the banks to accept realistic write-downs on the inflated property values their books still reflect, squeeze debt out of the economy, and hasten a recovery. And they might even keep the banks from doing this to us again. President Obama just proposed a "Financial Crisis Responsibility Fee" to be imposed on the Wall Street firms that caused the crash and soaked up most of the relief funds. While this is a good start, the fee is temporary. When it ends, the banks can return to their irresponsible ways. A permanent financial transactions tax would discourage speculative trading in home mortgages and the derivative pyramids that were piled on top of them. Serious financial re-regulation, like that outlined in the State of the Dream report, is also essential. In the end, recovery isn't enough. Banks whose irresponsible behavior led to the meltdown must accept part of the responsibility, or they'll do it again. At the same time, we must aid the hardest-hit communities, where joblessness and foreclosures are still wreaking havoc. That's the only route to a fair recovery and a healthy economy.

A greedy industry finds a loophole and steps in to siphon off a half-billion dollars without accomplishing anything new. Free money, no public purpose served, taxpayers ripped off. This is what’s happening right now with the Biomass Crop Assistance Program (BCAP). The program was designed to promote biomass crops, including perennial and mixed prairie grasses with deep root systems. These plants can be turned into fuels and electricity. They’re much kinder to the environment than crops like corn, which have until now dominated the biomass industry, and could potentially help address climate change. By substituting renewable biomass for fossil fuels like oil and coal, we can go a long way to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions. The BCAP, launched in the 2008 Farm Bill, was intended to help farmers begin to grow new crops for renewable energy. Instead, the wood and paper industry has swooped in and secured most of the program’s funding—up to $514 million could be paid out in a few months—to do what they’ve done for decades: burn wood waste to generate energy for company needs. Most of these companies, which include Weyerhaeuser, Georgia-Pacific, and International Paper, aren’t buying or producing any new biomass, nor are they producing any new renewable energy. Instead, they are getting our tax dollars to merely continue their standard operations. While using wood wastes for energy is a good thing, it’s not why this government program was created. Meanwhile, money to support new biomass crops, such as switchgrass or mixed prairies, hasn't even gotten off the ground. As technologies for biomass conversion come on line, there’s a chicken-andegg problem that the new BCAP program is designed to address: how to get the new crops established before the new energy facilities are ready to buy the biomass. So what went wrong? The U.S. Department of Agriculture

skipped the crop establishment program and instead launched a minor provision intended to help develop new collection, harvest, storage, and transport methods by matching the price paid for delivered biomass, up to $45 a ton. The USDA didn’t draft rules or put them out for comment, but instead issued a simple notice of funding availability with few restrictions. The applications poured in, and are still pouring in, with over 300 facilities approved, the vast majority from the paper industry and a wood industry beleaguered by the construction downturn. With no limits or environmental oversight in place, the wood products industry appears ready to profit from as much biomass as they care to strip from national and privately owned forests. Then there’s the spending problem. How does a program estimated by Congress to cost $70 million over five years suddenly have $514 million to spend in 2010 alone? Our arcane budgeting systems for agriculture are to blame, as “such sums as are necessary” magically appear off-budget for all commodity programs and the Biomass Crop Assistance Program. The USDA requested and the Obama administration approved this outrageous and unjustified expenditure. There’s one sure remedy to this potentially good program gone astray. The USDA needs to immediately rein in these payments, launch a smarter crop establishment program, and issue rules to ensure a sensible program that meets its intended purpose. Companies and farmers should only get matching payments for new biomass sources that will be used to create new renewable energy. Applicants must prove that they meet stringent environmental requirements to ensure that over-harvesting and sloppy practices aren’t subsidized. Getting renewable energy right is too important to let money be wasted. The government should be strategic with biomass crops instead of just throwing money at the problem with big handouts to corporations that don’t need them. --

A world of international flair was showcased at the recent Miami Children's Hospital Foundation Diamond Ball & Concert at the historic Biltmore Hotel, where nearly 450 guests helped launch the gala season. Many donned chic international attire as an alternative to black-tie and formal gowns reflecting the evening's theme: "An International Affair." The evening was designed to reflect the multi-cultural diversity of the Hospital and Foundation, which represent more than 40 nations and serves children from all around the world. To coincide with the theme, the Biltmore's International Plaza was transformed into an inviting reception area where guests enjoyed cocktails and hors d'oeuvres while being entertained by artist ranging from Thai and Indian performers to belly dancers. Guests were then ushered into the ballroom for a gourmet dinner to the exquisite violin music of seven-year-old prodigy Brianna Kahane. Former President Bill Clinton greeted guests via a special video message and, following dinner and a live auction, Miami Heat All-Star and Olympic athlete Dwyane Wade, whose image and jersey are recognized worldwide, was inducted into Miami Children's Hospital Foundation's International Pediatric Hall of Fame for his work on behalf of children through his Wade's World Foundation and other charitable outreach. Wade joins last year's honoree, Beyoncé Knowles, and such luminaries as Jonas Salk, Barbara Bush, Walt Disney and Kelly Preston. Following his

induction, Wade was cheered on by Alonzo Mourning and Heat President Pat Riley. After dinner, Mark Rivera, Tommy Byrnes and the other AllStar Members of The Billy Joel Band cranked up the music and energy before being joined by Foundation Junior Ambassador and music sensation Ethan Bortnick, and Oprah-protégé and rising Filipina singing star Charice. "The Diamond Ball and Concert was an intimate yet very elegant and exclusive affair because it was a 'friend-raiser' in addition to being our major annual fundraiser," said Miami Children's Hospital Foundation President Lucy Morillo. "We wished to thank on a very personal level all those who continued their generous and unwavering support throughout the year." Miami Children's Hospital Foundation is a not-for profit 501(C)(3) established to create a world-class pediatric hospital so no child need leave South Florida for superior medical care. "Funding World-Class Care" and following the principle that all children deserve state-of-the-art pediatric care with no financial boundaries, the Foundation helped 289-bed Miami Children's Hospital become a leader in pediatric healthcare with more than 40 subspecialties, the largest pediatric neurology center in the U.S., a top provider of cardiology and neonatology services, and a Research Institute conducting in excess of 150 clinical trials and protocols. Recovery Time BY PATRICIA C. FRANK Life today is so busy and over-scheduled that people often neglect themselves and do not allow themselves the time to recover from life’s events. There are many things that take their toll on your body, mind and spirit. You can have an illness operation or a surgical procedure that requires physical recovery. You can have a mental situation that requires psychological recovery. You may have lost a job, or experienced a divorce or a death. You may have had a disagreement with someone. When you recover from something you return to your normal state of health or consciousness. You regain the use of your body or the control of your thoughts and feelings. You need to restore your health and your physical attributes and you need to restore and reclaim your serenity and joy. Complete healing is not always automatic. You have to do things to regain your state of being. For instance if you have been the victim of frequent verbal attacks you may not even have the time to recover before the next one occurs. So you need to invent ways to create the time to recuper-

ate, recoup your equilibrium and regroup. You have to do things to help yourself heal. Make the effort to take the time to recover and heal. You have to devote yourself to the recovery process. You need to make a plan and to develop rituals that will help you heal. You might have an object that you can carry with you and touch. It will remind you that you need to focus your attention on your recovery. Or, you may put two fingers together and press gently to achieve the same effect. Always have a positive thought that you can substitute instantly for any negative, doubtful thoughts that you may have. Allow yourself the time to grieve for what you have lost. Allow yourself the time to visualize your return to health be it physical, mental or emotional and perhaps, all three together. Have a “snow day.” A snow day is a day without responsibilities. It is a free pass. It is a day to play. Learn how to relax and how to pamper yourself. If you do not have a whole day, take short and immediate breaks in response to any negative situations. Recognize, accept and appreciate the need for recovery time. Make it a part of your daily routine. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. She can be reached at 305-788-4864, 212-308-0309.

Eat This…Drink That…

BubbleQ Inspires the Search for Great BBQ BY SHARI LYNN ROTHSTEIN-KRAMER Each year I wait with baited breath for the end of February/beginning of March for every gourmet enthusiast’s dream: the South Beach Wine & Food Festival. Days and nights of unabashed tasting, or shall I say, consuming. One of my favorite events here is BubbleQ, which takes place in a tent, on the beach behind the Delano Hotel. More than 30 chefs from around the country gather to make great BBQ meats, seafood, and then desserts, paired with Perrier-Jouët, for chow enthusiasts in the sand on the beach. This year, more top chefs from out of state came down bringing their delicious dishes to the mouths of South Florida foodies. All the way from Los Angeles, CA., was Border Grill’s Susan Feniger & Mary Sue Milliken, Kenny Callaghan of the much acclaimed Blue Smoke in NYC, Roger Herring of Socca in Chicago, IL, John Besh of Restaurant August in New Orleans, Todd English of Olives in NYC, and Susan Spicer of New Orleans-based Bayona among many

more. My favorite dish was from chef Chris Lilly of Big Bob Gibson Bar-B-Q, Decatur, Alabama. He offered a plate of chopped pork (yes, I was watching them pull hocks out of the smoker and chop the piece right in front of me. To those who appreciate, truly a beautiful sight) paired with a spicy slaw. The combination was alive with flavor and exploded in my mouth as I chewed the first bite. It was so good, I think a tear came to my eye. Naturally, SoFla chefs were out in full force. Locals included Dewey LoSasso of T h e F o r g e , C l a u d e T r o i s g r o s & Maria Manso of the Blue Door at Delano, Steve Martorano of Café Martorano, Howie Kleinberg of North Miami Beach-based Bulldog Barbecue, Norman Van Aken of Norman’s 180, Jonathan Eismann of Pacific Time, Michelle Bernstein of Sra. Martinzez. I always expect a bit more from the top chefs, so I walk away disappointed when there is nothing truly memorable. Then I think to myself, well, they are cooking for masses…but still this is a representation of their food. Would I seek out their restaurants for BBQ after this showing? Um...probably not. So, where would I go to indulge in great

finger-lickin’ BBQ? I decided to make it my business to find out. Here’s what I came up with: While not traditional in its preparation, Bulldog Barbecue (305.940.9655) does make some yummy treats including the Smokehouse Wings ($10) and sinfully delish S’mores Pie ($7) for dessert. A bit more expensive for what it should be, it is still worth the trip. Joseph’s on the Water (954.455.6996) in Hallandale at the Hemisphere Condos offers Baby Back Ribs. For $18.95 you’ll get a generous portion of meaty ribs, slowly roasted for hours in our own specially seasoned BBQ sauce. Although it is more “jewishstyle” than BBQ, do not miss the brisket. This is what slow-cooked meat should be. Q American Barbecue (305.BARBEQUE) Jonathan Eismann’s new venture, which opened the same night as Bubble Q in Miami’s design district offers lots of great fare at reasonable prices. Try the Q-Zillah, enough for two, sample spare ribs, baby backs, ? Pit chicken, ?-pound of pulled pork, cole slaw, Pit beans, house-made pickles and cornbread for $35. Good deal and tasty, too. If you read my column, you probably know how I feel about chain restaurants

(hate them!) but Scruby’s BBQ makes a mean smoked turkey ($9.99/pound). But that’s about all. Tom Jenkins BBQ (954.522.5046) is hands down the most authentic and delicious around. The Fort Lauderdale-based institution is no frills, no apologies. Eat in (at your own risk) on wooden picnic tables or take home (my recommendation) to the comfort of your own dining room, but either way, the baby back ribs, pulled pork, chopped beef, chicken, are all to die for. Then you have the sides. Leave room for the mac-n-cheese, collard greens, cole slaw and baked beans. YUM! Nothing is more than a full slab of baby backs ($18.29). If you need variety (I am guilty of that!) go for the Family Sampler. For $49.95 you get to try a liberal sampling the mouth-watering, finger licking meats and sides, which never fail to meet expectations.

Volunteer delivers gifts to children in Ecuador

Nora Barzaga is pictured with some of the children in Ecuador who recently received gift-filled shoeboxes. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

BY LEE STEPHENS

Nora Barzaga recently experienced the joy of Christmas all over again when she delivered gift-filled shoeboxes to needy children in Ecuador. Barzaga traveled to the South American country in early February as part of a special team with Operation Christmas Child. The group of staff and volunteers, along with Ecuadorian community and church leaders, handed out more than 10,000 shoe box gifts to children in schools, hospitals, children’s homes and churches near Manta-Portoviejo on the Pacific coast of Ecuador. Operation Christmas Child, the world’s largest Christmas project, is a part of Samaritan’s Purse, an international Christian relief and evangelism organization headed by Franklin Graham. To participate, caring kids, families, churches and groups pack shoe boxes with small toys, school supplies, hygiene items, candy and personal notes for the recipient children. Some 8 million gifts were collected for Operation Christmas Child during the 2009 season, and are being delivered to

children in more than 100 countries worldwide — including nearly 100,000 boxes to Ecuador. Hundreds of thousands of shoebox gifts have been delivered to the country since 1997, and over 77 million gifts have been sent to children around the world since the project started in 1993. The project is made possible by tens of thousands of volunteers. Barzaga, an employee of Assurant Solutions in south Miami-Dade, serves as area coordinator of the Operation Christmas Child volunteer leadership team in the Miami-Keys area. She initially became involved in the project by becoming a project coordinator for OCC at Riverside Baptist Church in Kendall where she attended. As area coordinator, she oversees the collection and promotional efforts of volunteers in Miami-Keys. “I am very passionate about Operation Christmas Child and influencing the lives of children. I know this is going to help in the work that I do,” Barzaga said. Should you consider Tax Swaps in your Investment Portfolio? BY BRUCE DAVIS

Transactions that allow the proceeds from the sale of a security to be simultaneously reinvested into another security are sometimes referred to as a swap. The combined transactions of the swap are designed to provide benefits to the investor in terms of diversification1, income, credit quality, maturity target or call features. Often, there may be tax benefits to the swap as well. Realizing Gains and Losses Many individuals have unrealized capital gains and losses in their investment portfolios which may be unlocked through a swap transaction, known as a tax swap. These transactions require the sale of a security to offset a loss or a gain elsewhere in your portfolio. Such a swap may convert a paper loss into a real tax saving. You should consult your tax advisor before making any tax-related investment decisions. You might consider tax swaps if you have capital gains or losses from the sale of a security, or expect to sell a security at a profit or loss in the near future. While swaps can be done at any time of the year, many investors use the period towards the end of the tax year to review their

portfolios for tax swap opportunities. For example: if you sell an equity position for a significant gain, you could offset the capital gain by selling a fixed income holding for a capital loss, using the proceeds to buy a new bond with a higher coupon. Short- or Long-term? Netting the Difference As described below, capital losses can be used to offset capital gains on a dollar-fordollar basis. For tax reporting purposes you must first net short-term gains against shortterm losses (securities held for one year or less), and long-term gains against long-term losses (securities held for more than a year). Any remaining short- and long-term gains and losses can be netted against each other. If net capital losses still remain, up to $3,000 may be used to offset ordinary income. Any unused capital losses are carried forward indefinitely. Avoiding the ‘Wash Sale’ Rule The Internal Revenue Service requires a taxpayer to defer any tax loss generated from the sale and purchase of ‘substantially identical securities’ if the transactions occur within 30 days of each other (regardless of whether the sale is before or after the purchase). This is commonly referred to as a ‘wash sale.’ Generally, securities are not considered identical when they have differ-

ent issuers, or, for fixed income securities, where there are substantial differences in either maturity date or coupon rate. You should consult your own tax advisor before making any swap decision and to determine whether a sale will be considered a wash sale. Investment Considerations As with all investments, equity and fixed income securities have inherent risks which you should consider before investing. These include equity market risk, interest rate risk, credit risk, reinvestment risk, fixed income secondary market risk2 and call risk. In addition, any swap should always be considered in relation to your financial objectives and goals. Investment Goals and Objectives Tax swapping can be an important tool in managing your investment portfolio. IRA rollovers gather your scattered retirement assets BY JASON JOLLS

How many retirement plans and accounts do you currently have? Are you sure? It’s easy to lose track, especially if you have changed jobs or opened IRAs in tax seasons only to have forgotten about them later. Knowing the location and value of your retirement assets is an important part of retirement planning. To simplify your efforts, consider consolidating those assets with IRA rollovers.

Kitchen 305: 305-949-1300 www.myspace.com/kitchen305

KEY ADVANTAGES You may use the IRA rollover option to move funds from a qualified retirement plan or traditional IRA to another traditional IRA or from one Roth IRA to another Roth IRA, with no current tax consequences. Consolidating your accounts makes it easier to keep track of retirement balances, contributions and investment performance. You’ll receive fewer statements for easier record keeping and possibly pay less in annual account fees. With your assets pooled together, you may adjust your investment strategy more easily. And consolidation streamlines the process of making your required minimum distributions during retirement.

MONEY MATTER$ PUT A ROLLOVER IN MOTION To track down your retirement assets, review your tax records and contact previous employers. For information about IRA rollovers contact us. We can help you put the IRA rollover wheels in motion and assist you with other retirement planning needs. Earnings on Roth IRA withdrawals may be subject to state and local income taxes; they may be subject to federal income taxes if taken before five years of participation. Qualified retirement plan and traditional IRA withdrawals generally are subject to ordinary income taxes. Withdrawals from a qualified retirement plan, traditional IRA or Roth IRA prior to age 59 1/2 may be subject to a 10 percent federal tax penalty. Certain exceptions apply. Required minimum distributions from traditional IRAs generally must begin by April 1 of the year after you reach age 70 1/2, and from qualified retirement plans by that date or by April 1 of the year after you retire, if later. Keeping crime in check in Miami-Dade County BY CARLOS ALVAREZ

Mayor, Miami-Dade County The 2009 numbers are in and violent and nonviolent crimes in unincorporated Miami-Dade are at their lowest levels in five years. Nearly every area tracked revealed decreases, including robberies and motor vehicle thefts. The drop is in line with national trends, but it’s also the result of long-term, comprehensive efforts to fight crime through targeted enforcement, community engagement and interagency cooperation. To the men and women of the Miami-Dade Police Department, thank you for your hard work, dedication and determination to keep our neighborhoods safe. Like all county departments, the police department is adapting to today’s economic realities. Administration and overtime are being reduced, and reorganizations are occurring, but not a single police officer,

firefighter or corrections officer has been laid-off in Miami-Dade County. That’s something of which we can all be proud. The reasons for the reduction in crime extend beyond the police department. Our Juvenile Services Department is intervening in the lives of at-risk young people before it’s too late. Our Homeless Trust is preventing homelessness, reducing our homeless population to its lowest level ever. Miami-Dade County’s Drug Court Program is successfully treating substance abusers and keeping them out of jail. All of these programs are considered national models. All of these things are investments in our community. They improve our quality of life, and they contribute to our well-being. The bottom line is that public safety is intact in Miami-Dade County. Public safety remains a priority. All residents and visitors value public safety, and Miami-Dade County is delivering.

Accepting homosexual teenagers BY COLLEEN WRIGHT

It is something that is rarely discussed in school as the very mention of it may silence a room or even surface a few giggles. Teenagers who are unsure feel secluded and confused, even scared. But for teens who believe they may be gay, some try to closet their true sexual orientation and conform, while other teens bravely show their true colors and often become martyrs of their identity. Sexual orientation is a major factor of being a teenager. The Kinsey Reports by biologist Dr. Alfred Kinsey estimate that one of every 10 teens may be gay, lesbian, bisexual or transsexual. Many people argue it is a choice and a lifestyle while others believe it is a natural occurrence; however, teenagers of both existences deserve equality and fair treatment in today’s world, yet some of today’s teenagers do not respect this dignity. In school, an environment where individuality and freedom of expression are boasted, many students do not feel comfortable about their sexual orientation. Verbal insults and physical harassment target those who are gay, bringing self-esteems to extreme lows. High school is a time to mature, a time for teenagers to find themselves, a once-in-a-lifetime experience that can shape their identity for the rest of their lives. According to the Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network (GLSEN), which prevents anti-lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) name-calling, bullying and harassment at schools, the reported grade point average of students who were more frequently harassed because of their sexual orientation or gender expression was almost half a grade lower than for students who were less often harassed: 2.4 as compared to 2.8. Ironically, it is a double standard; students are encouraged to build character and individuality in school, but other students may react harshly to the difference in the norm, making classmates feel inferior and even threatened by their sexual orientation. Hate crimes are committed every day toward gays and often these cruel acts go unpunished. How can a teenager blossom his or her true self when they are taunted every time they walk through the halls? The statistics are quite frightening. GLSEN reports nine out of 10 LGBT students report verbal, sexual or physical harassment. Three-fifths feel unsafe at school because of their sexual orientation and

TEEN TALK more than 30 percent report missing at least one day of school in the past month out of fear for their personal safety. Ashley is a perfect example of these statistics. As a junior at a local high school, Ashley feels threatened because of coming out as a lesbian. “It’s hard because I get stared at and made fun of all the time,” Ashley said. “People say I’m going to hell for being gay and that God doesn’t accept me. It’s like I’m against the wall and people are throwing stones.” Ashley is strongly rooted in her faith, but feels uncomfortable as others do not accept her sexual orientation. Sometimes this discrimination can take teenagers to the edge. According to the Massachusetts 2006 Youth Risk Survey, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth are four times more likely to attempt suicide than their straight peers. A survey done in 2007 by the San Francisco State University Chavez Center Institute reports that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth who come from a disapproving family are up to nine times more likely to commit suicide than those who are straight. As a society we must respect the individuality of everyone, as everyone is deserving of respect, regardless of sexual orientation. A straight teenager is equal in all aspects to a gay teenager. Both manage pressures with school, friends and parents. With all these stresses already on a young person, why should one have to fear torment because of their sexual preference? We have no reason to show hatred toward those who have a different standard of living. So next time the topic arises in conversation, try your best to hold your tongue from slipping a derogatory slur or releasing a small snicker. As much as you may not think so, there may be someone around who may be questioning his or her sexuality or actually be gay. We are all humans: We laugh, we cry and we die all the same way, and our sexual preference does not merit degradation and shame, let alone physical punishment. Society may deem homosexuality as taboo, but let’s not forget the popular defense of freedom of expression. Colleen Wright is a junior at Our Lady of Lourdes Academy where she is a copy editor and business manager of the school newspaper. She may be contacted via email at <colleen.a.wright@gmail.com>.

Stretch your power dollar with dimmer switches BY KENT CROOK

President, Wiremasters Electric “Turn off the lights when you leave” is a phrase your parents probably used quite often in their attempts to trim the monthly electric bill. Today’s modern technology lets the lights turn themselves off or reduce the lighting level from very bright to dim. The typical commercial building, about 50,000 square feet in area, spends about $45,000 a year on lighting energy. My source is The New Thinking About Lighting published in Building Operating Management in August 2008. Lighting controls are the key to keeping your commercial property’s power bill under control. Benefits to you as a property owner include: • Lower operating costs. • More flexible space because of lighting and shading zones created without rewiring. • Increased productivity and comfort for employees. • Ability of employees to create preferred light levels and automated shade control. • When the proper equip.m.ent is installed, you have what seems like unlimited possibilities for controlling the lighting in your offices. • Lights turn on when someone enters a room and turn off when the room is vacant. • The shades covering the windows are opened or closed according to outside conditions, so that energy consumption is reduced. • When lights are dimmed and shades are automatically controlled, there is reduced need for lighting and reduced load on the HVAC system. • Lights can be scheduled as to when to turn on and when to turn off. • Employees can set the preferred light level for different tasks. Because 90 percent of information is received visually, it is important for the employee to have the right a.m.ount of light for the task at hand. • If the needs of a certain office space

WIREMASTER change, it is possible to use wall controls, occupancy sensors and daylight sensors for reassigning settings to different fixtures. Let’s take a day in the life of an office, to show how technology adjusts the needs for lighting: 7 to 8 a.m.: The security staff and facility staff enter the building. Shades open to let in daylight. Occupancy sensors turn on lights to 50 percent to save energy. If more light is needed, adjustments can be made at a wallstation. 9 to 11 a.m.: Office workers arrive, so lights are automatically set at 80 percent light output. Daylight sensors reduce electric light levels to respond to available daylight. Lunch: Lights automatically dim down to 10 percent as workers leave for lunch. 2 p.m.: Workers have returned by now so lights automatically rise to higher levels as daylight decreases. 3 to 4 p.m.: Workers dim their lights and adjust shades with hand-held remotes so they can clearly view their computer screens and have enough light to take notes during a webinar. 5 p.m.: Workers leave, so lights automatically dim down to 10 percent. Control devices can override this setting if additional light is needed. 6 p.m.: Cleaning crew arrives, so lights automatically turn on to 80 percent for the janitorial staff. After hours: The time clock automatically turns the lights off and lowers shades to save energy. This also minimizes light pollution. The benefits of a lighting control strategy go on and on. And one of the most satisfying benefits is that reduced amount of money spent each month for electricity. Kent Crook is president of Wiremasters Electric. Contact him at 305-385-9379 or via email at <kent@kcmia.m.i.com>.

Do protein bars ‘raise the bar’ for nutrition?

Page 33

"% #/5.4%$ ,1 7+( &(1686

BY BARI AUERBACH Protein bars available in a variety of flavors such as chewy chocolate chip and chunky peanut butter may sound delicious but they’re not always nutritious. While some protein bars can provide a good occasional source of nutrition and convenient way of adding protein to you diet, some types contain as many calories and grams of sugar as candy bars. Not All Are Created Equal Power Bars, Balance Bars, Luna Bars, Zone Bars...Once only found at gyms and health food stores, energy bars are now at most grocery and convenience stores. With so many different brands and types of protein, energy and meal replacement bars on the market, it’s up to consumers to be aware that they all contain varying levels of protein, carbohydrates, fat, and sugar, depending on their intended goal. While energy bars and meal replacement bars are usually loaded with high amounts of carbohydrates, protein bars designed to help gain or maintain muscle mass typically contain anywhere from 20 to 35 grams of protein and very little to moderate amounts of carbohydrates and fat. It’s important to read the nutrition facts label since some bars marketed as high protein bars actually have very low amounts of protein and high amounts of carbohydrates in the form of sugar. For example, one leading brand has 30 grams of protein and only 2 grams of sugar - while another has only 10 grams of protein and as much as 18 grams of sugar. Also take careful note of the caloric content of each bar, as they tend to vary widely. A product review of 20 bars conducted by ConsumerLab found saturated fat and sugar alcohols that can cause gas and bloating were common ingredients in most. The Medical Science Monitor has also pub-

lished a study showing a rise in insulin levels associated with eating bars that have a high carbohydrate content, making it more difficult to lose body fat. Quick Fix, Long Lasting Protein bars offer a fast, easy way to have a snack or meal replacement that can add to daily protein intake, help reduce hunger and promote fat loss. Most also have a long shelf life so you can stock them in your desk drawer or cupboard for a steady supply. If you’re going to eat a protein bar, look for one with whole grains and fiber, moderate sugar and fat and at least 15 grams of protein. Elizabeth Applegate, a nutritionist and exercise expert at the University of California also recommends eating a piece of fresh fruit, some carrots or low-fat cheese sticks with the bar that contain phytochemicals such as beta-carotene, lycopene and flavinols that can reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, cancer and heart disease. Many people assume since athletes eat energy bars, they’ll get fit if they eat them too. But remember - athletes don’t get fit by eating energy bars alone - they get fit by working out. Ultimately, most nutritionists agree it’s OK to have energy bars sometimes - but it’s even better to make a “no holds barred effort to eat more healthful whole foods and exercise more frequently.

While in some cases this may be traumatic, in all cases, it is a necessary prelude to getting help and healing for a family member who is suffering with some form of selfinflicted trauma or heartache.

Libra - Don't worry. No matter far down your throat you jam your foot this week, your words will still pop out smelling like roses. Just be careful when signing documents or sending out paperwork that calls for action. Chances are excellent that you will have to be doing some serious re-writing. Scorpio - You have some good money news coming this week. You may find money while cleaning up, or there is a check in the mail, or you may hear from your employer that your budget is about to get a much-needed booster shot. Just don't spend it all at the local hardware shop. You are in a redecorating mood.

Sagittarius - The atmosphere turns dramatically romantic this week, and just in time, as far as you are concerned. If you are single, you'll have wonderful opportunities to meet new people. If you are married, it's a terrific time to take your mate out for a long overdue treat. Capricorn - Your intuition is powerful and strong this week, but you may find to works better in and around your family and home neighborhood, less so in and around the workplace, or when directed towards career issues. The workplace may bring mixed results this week.

Aquarius - You have some interesting phone calls heading your way this week. Friends, companions and your love partner all bring you good news. If you are single, one of your friends could be planning a blind date, or a sneaky introduction to another friend.

Pisces - You can have a lot of fun if you surround yourself with children this week. If you are not a parent borrow some from your friends, neighbors or a sibling for a sporting event or some kind of playful fun, and give their hardworking parents a well-deserved break at the same time. 1000 Kane Concourse Bay Harbor, FL 33154
