Victory Center Gala tied to sustaining operations BY LYNN CARROLL

The 10th annual gala this month to raise funds for the Victory Center for Autism & Behavioral Challenges needs solid returns, says Executive Director Thalya G. Olmos. "We need to raise more funds than ever in order to sustain our programs and services next year," Olmos says. "Over the past year we have, like many other organizations, experienced serious budget cuts." The gala will honor Annie Isabella, Cindy Fraga and Jocelyn Rodriguez for their continual work within the autism community, as well as a special acknowledgement to all of Victory's past honorees. "What makes us unique is our one-to-one staff-to-pupil ratio," Olmos says. "We need to spread the word about Victory Center's programs and how vital it is to keep our doors open." Olmos says that one in every 91 children have been diagnosed with autism, including one in every 70 boys. "The cost of lifelong care can be reduced by two-thirds with early diagnosis and intervention," she says. The event, which features a silent auction, is at 6:30 p.m. March 25 in Christine Lee's at Gulfstream Park, 901 S. Federal Hwy., Hallandale Beach. Victory sponsorships begin at $2,500. Stuart Geller reinvents Geller Design Group…and himself BY LYNN CARROLL

PROVOCATIVE QUESTIONS FOR PROVOCATIVE PEOPLE sories and area rugs…all the things that go into making a house a home. I've realized that I'm still an artist, whether I'm working with fabric that cost $99 a yard or $20. The artistry is in putting it all together.

LC: In these times, when we're seeing whole industries facing major challenges, how is interior design affected?

SG: It's a very interesting time, because although the economy has challenged everyone, our homes still need attention. Our needs are changing very rapidly. Space has become very expensive and now has to serve many purposes. Technology has come into our homes and our lives, and that means design changes too. For example, TVs have become smaller and flatter, so there's no need for heavy, clunky furniture to hide these archaic big boxes that no longer exist.

LC: What about your passion for charity work? How is that manifesting these days?

LC: As an interior designer with a reputation for working on high-end projects, how have you responded to these challenges?

SG: It's been a process of discovery. Looking back, I can see it began with me and how I relate to what I do. I've always felt that being an artist is a blessing, and I found the concept of "re-inventing oneself" - especially during challenging times - has completely energized me. I've adapted to the times by creating fee structures that make it possible for me to help more potential clients. In the past I would travel to Europe frequently in

search of materials. Now I've found new sources for magnificent fabrics and wall coverings that are produced in our country. There's no expensive exchange of dollars to pounds or euros, and at the same time it helps our economy. Even in our own community, I've discovered all kinds of wonderful new sources for furnishings, handsome flooring, lighting, window treatment, art, acces-

That's part of Miami Jewish Health Services, formerly Miami Home & Hospital for the Aged at Douglas Gardens, for which I'm a Founder, executive board member, and also sit on the board of the hospice. The Miami Jewish Health Services campus is in the heart of the Haitian community, and we employ about 600 Haitian employees. We were so devastated by the destruction and turmoil in Haiti following the earthquake. Each board member made a pledge to match every donation through the Red Cross. Age vs. Maturity BY PATRICIA C. FRANK Are you aging or are you maturing? Age is the length of time that someone or something has existed. Your age is a particular point in your life. Aging is a process. If something has aged it is the result of the things that have acted upon it and made it what it has become. When you age you are the product of everything that has happened to you in your life. Things can improve with age like fine wine or steak or they can decay and spoil. People can improve with age or they can deteriorate. If you mature you are fully developed and you have fully developed the powers of your mind and body. You are experienced and wise in the ways of the world. You are mellow and seasoned. You are refined and sophisticated. You are highly developed and complex and have many facets to your personality. You have ripened into something sweeter and better. You have reached a certain perfection. You are ready for whatever life brings. Focus on maturing not just aging. Refuse to have an expiration date. An expiration date means that the product is past the date of perfection. It means that the item may

no longer be 100% effective. It may no longer produce the promised or desired result. Refuse to let yourself age and become old. Refuse to become outmoded dismissed and irrelevant. If you become irrelevant then you are no longer part of the reality of the moment. The manner or style in which you communicate determines whether or not you are listened to and whether or not what you have to say is of any interest to the other person. Stay on the topic. Stay united with the other person on all levels. Do not bring the conversation back to you. Do not drift into the past. It is tempting to reminisce and tell stories but not advisable. There may be times and situations where it is permissible and even important. Generally, however, it disconnects you from the conversation and more importantly from the other individuals. It breaks the mental, emotional and psychological connection. If what you have to say is not relevant, pertinent or appropriate you may be perceived as boring and out of it. If you want to be relevant and matter, what you have to say must matter. Do everything you can to make sure that you mature and not just age. It is important to get better and not just get older. Denise Rubin talks Real Estate

Size Matters BY DENISE RUBIN The most commonly asked questions by my clients or any potential real estate clients are: How many square feet is the condo or home? How big is it? How many bedrooms? How many bathrooms? How big is the yard? What size is the lot? How many feet on the water? How big is the dock and what size boat can it accommodate? It surely is a matter of size! Many buyers were coming to me requesting space similar to their homes. They were ready for a life change from a home to a condo. But they were not willing to compromise on size. The kind of space they were looking for was scarce. Also, a place with over 3 bedrooms was at a premium. After 2000, the developers seemed to get wind of this as well, and began to cater to buyers moving out of very large homes or having more children and needing space. Fabulous Hidden Bay was being built on 190th st, which ultimately changed the landscape of Aventura. It was designed by architect Carl Segar, and recognizable by his other similarly-designed building,

Portofino in South Beach. I sold 18 units in pre construction in Hidden Bay and won broker contests run by the developer. Thus, I was very familiar with all that transpired. After presales for Towers I and II, the developers went back to the drawing board. They were getting so many requests for larger units, that they totally closed down sales and redesigned Tower III from the 26th floor up to 40. No longer did 2,140 s.f. represent the largest units as before, but now 2,640 and 4,000 s.f. units were selling out quickly to meet the demand. Then Boca Developers built Hamptons South in 2002 and soon followed with Peninsula I. These floor plans also catered to the large-size demand and were comprised of only 3,000 s.f. plus units with two lines of 4-bedroom plans. Others followed suit and now Aventura offers a choice of homes in the sky, now LARGER. All the space of a home with the perks and amenities a condo has to offer. Yes, bigger is better and size does matter! Call Denise Rubin at 305-409-0019 for all your real estate needs and visit www.deniserubin.com for listings and virtual tours.

Eat This... Drink That...

Eating Las Vegas BY SHARI LYNN ROTHSTEIN-KRAMER Las Vegas has changed over the past few years. What was once a tacky town filled with gambling and bad buffets is now a tacky town filled with gambling, bad buffets, better buffets, and exquisite expensive eateries. I took a quick trip to Vegas (three days) to teach a class a conference for event planners and caterers, and decided that this would be a great opportunity to eat in as many places as I could and share my discoveries. So, with that said, let’s begin. I do not like buffets. Why? Because the majority of people in the world are disgusting and once you’ve seen someone put their fingers all over four rolls before selecting one, or grab a piece of bacon from the batch using the same fingers that were in their mouths a minute ago, all of a sudden, I am less hungry as I was a few minutes prior. I stayed at Paris and was persuaded by my friend to dine at the breakfast buffet there. Oh happy day. But I was starving and he was buying, so we went. I opted for an omelet. Safe choice. Untouched besides the cook and me. Dinner is my meal of choice. Always. I love to dine. I want to sit, sip, and experience a restaurant. From the first bite of bread to the last bite of dessert…the wine and each course in between. My first dinner was shared with almost 20 people at a small party at Switch, a restaurant in the Wynn Hotel. I began with a porcini and potato soup. Creamy, white, thick but not heavy (a pleasant surprise), and accented with little random bites of mushroom. Such a nice contrast in textures. For the main course, I had what could have been the most incredible piece of filet mignon I’ve ever eaten. Little savory explosions occurred each time I chewed. The meat itself was perfectly medium rare and so tender I cut it with a fork. For presentation, it sat atop a pool of mild creamed spinach. Lovely. Dinner the second night was at Yellowtail, a sexy sushi den at Bellagio. Oh My Goodness. The aromas, the flavors, the quality, the service and the sake ? all made for a memorable ? and decadent meal. Again with a small group, I nibbled yellow-

tail tartar, served in a pool of Asian dipping sauce. The fish was so fresh that it fell apart at first touch. I loved the quality, but I would have preferred to dip rather than have so much sauce hide the fish’s delicate flavor. Then out came Foie Gras two ways – pate and puree. Richness, decadence, satisfaction and the buttery texture only made better by the seared scallop slices it was paired with. Bu wait, there’s more. We asked the waiter to surprise us. He returned with a dish I never would have selected: tuna sashimi pizza topped with truffled aioli. Pizza? Too filling for a night on the town. Or is it? This “dough” was actually a paper-light, house-made cracker topped with thin slices (think usuzkuri) of Ahi finished with the wafting scent of truffles in the form of aioli. It was so light and delish, I could have consumed all eight slices of the personal sized “pie.” And speaking of “pies”, the next day, I actually saw a piece of mediocre looking pizza (and not even a big slice) for $7.95 at the convention center. When I asked if that was for the whole pie, the server laughed. “Pie? Yeah…no. Slice,” she said. I couldn’t do it. I am not a cheap person, nor do I mind indulging (much to my husband’s chagrin) but no way. Not on this. And so I digress. I want to end Vegas on an “up note”, so let’s go back to Yellowtail. I cannot drink hot sake. The smell is so strong that I can’t get it past my lips. On the flip side, give me cold sake all day (Okay, not really all day. That would be a big mess!). But seriously, we selected an unfiltered which (as its name implies) is not filtered, leaving the rice starch in to create a milky consistency. Fresh, clean, bold, semi dry, and delicious on its own, but it went to well with all of our very different dishes. It cut the richness of the foie gras, enhanced the delicate tartar, and picked up the scent of the truffles. There are hundreds and hundreds of great places to dine now – Joel Rubuchon, N9NE Steakhouse, StripSteak, CraftSteak, Michael Mina…I could go on all day, but I will end with this: No matter what you desire, Vegas restaurants are sure to please.

Travel Tips Business Travel - Invest in a GPS BY DAVID GEDANSKY Some road warriors may pride themselves on their ability to navigate a new city using only their business savvy, innate sense of direction and perhaps a little help from a local map. However, not knowing exactly where you are going can lead to lost time and wasted gas as you try to follow an outdated map, rely on unclear directions from a passer-by or confuse east and west in an unfamiliar location. These troubles can be eliminated by carrying a global positioning system (GPS) with you. These satellite-based systems are very handy gadgets. They pinpoint your position on the globe and provide you with step-by-step directions to your destination, whether it’s around the corner or across town. GPS systems can even direct you around traffic jams and construction zones. With this kind of precise and accurate assistance, you have a much better chance of finding what you’re looking for – whether it’s a restaurant, factory, airport, hotel or office building – on the first try. A variety of GPS devices are available, and there are certain characteristics you might

want to look for. For example, choose a compact GPS that you can carry with you easily. If you visit cities that are walkable, you may want a GPS that has a pedestrian mode, so you can use it when driving or walking. If you’re an international traveler, look for a GPS that’s pre-loaded with international maps. You may also want features like currency converters and language translators. And, if you don’t want to carry around a separate piece of hardware, you may be able to add a GPS software package to your palmtop or pocket PC. Finally, rest assured that there’s no shame in relying on a GPS to find your way around on your business trips – lots of your customers and suppliers probably use them, too. And, you’ll enjoy a great feeling of accomplishment when your GPS helps you arrive at your appointments on time, unflustered, and ready to address the business at hand. Mazda CX-9 gets significant facelift for 2010 Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS The Mazda CX-9 is the Japanese automaker’s flagship crossover SUV and the 2010 model marks its fourth year of production. For the 2010 model year, the CX-9 gets a significant exterior and interior facelift, more options and reinforced safety features. The CX-9 retains its flowing silhouette, prominent wheels and tires, muscular fenders and steeply angled windshield, as well as the sculpted five-point grille and wide bumper. The side windows form an open greenhouse and allow good vision from all three rows of seating positions. Unique trapezoid, dual chrome exhaust pipes accentuate the design. Other enhancements include: • A bolder grille, front combination headlights and fog lights. • Larger, more aerodynamic side mirrors. • Combination taillights that mimic the headlights, while incorporating a new red

lens at the bottom. • A new Dolphin Gray exterior color. The CX-9 is powered by a short-stroke, state-of-the-art 273 hp 3.7-liter V-6 engine with such advanced features as a die-cast aluminum block with cast-in iron cylinder liners and aluminum cylinder heads for minimal weight. The valvetrain includes chain-driven dual overhead camshafts for minimal maintenance, four valves-percylinder with direct acting bucket-type actuators, and variable intake valve timing. The CX-9 rides on a 113.2-inch wheelbase, one of the longest in the segment, which allows for easy access to the threerow seating. There’s plenty of room for adults in every seating position. The driver’s seat and steering column move easily over a long range of adjustment and the 6040 split second row easily seats three, has five inches of fore-and-aft slide travel and a reclining backrest. The third row splits 5050 and the legroom is among the best we’ve seen. Entry to the third row is a breeze, with 26 inches of access space between the folded second-row seat and the C-pillar. And even with the third row occupied, the CX-9 has 17.2 cubic feet of cargo space. Both second and third row seats fold flat for additional

storage space all the way up to the back of the front seats. On the inside, there’s a neatly organized combination of cylindrical shapes and blacked-out instruments on a T-shaped instrument panel. Brightly edged gauges and indirect blue illumination set a cool mood, while indirect lighting is embedded in the ceiling. Horizontal elements in areas such as the center panel, door trim and seat design intersect with vertical accents to create the same harmony present in fine furniture.

The CX-9 is a comfortable, luxurious SUV. It handles well around town for a big SUV and has plenty of power for the highway. Base price on the 2010 Mazda CX-9 is $32,645. Do you really need an anti-virus program? BY JAMES THOMAS If you surf the Internet or send and receive email, sooner or later you will most likely be the victim of a virus attack. However, a continuously updated anti-virus software application can mitigate most potential problems. Some of the more popular programs including McAfee, Norton, AVG and Kapersky help reduce the threat, but can fall short if you do not routinely perform the updates because it is reported that more than 1,000 new viruses or variants are created every month. Since you can get a virus by opening an email or even by clicking on a picture or hyperlink at your favorite social media website, a stand-alone anti-virus program may not be enough. Many companies now offer firewall and browser protection included in a suite of software services. A firewall primarily protects intruders from accessing your computer via the Internet. Browser protection warns you, or can even block a potentially dangerous website. You may say, “I only open email from people I know.” That’s a good start, but we have seen several cases where someone’s email list has been compromised by a virus then subsequent attachments are sent out under the guise of that known friend or coworker. Another common problem we see is the pop-up that looks just like a Microsoft window beckoning you to click on a continue button to update your anti-virus. It doesn’t matter at this point if you click on continue or cancel, it activates a virus. Mac users don’t be fooled; your computer is vulnerable to virus attacks, too! The reason it seems that viruses are a PC only problem is simply because of the PC to Mac ratio. Since PCs control most of the desktop market,

COMPUTERS there are significantly more software applications available and consequently more viruses; as such, we hear more about those cases. Most of the major anti-virus companies provide Mac versions of their products and some even offer protection for smart-phones. Finally, you can get a virus even if you have installed an updated version of toprated anti-virus software on your computer. How? By over-riding the anti-virus or firewall warnings and clicking on the continue button. It’s analogous to giving the bad guy a key to your house along with the alarm code. You may have security in place, but once you relinquish the protection, only bad things can happen. It is through these types of passive interactions that viruses infiltrate companies costing them billions every year in lost productivity and repairs. What can you do to diminish these potential problems? First, allocate the necessary time and finances to install and manage a reliable antivirus, firewall, email and browser protection suite of software. Businesses should consider dedicated hardware appliances and software solutions. Finally, consult with your IT professional to develop a proactive backup plan, disaster recovery plan and managed service plan to protect your data. Experienced IT professionals can eradicate most virus attacks in order to recover important data and not simply offer to re-format the hard drive. Never Pay Another Expensive Repair Again

March 17 - 23, 2010

• EDUCATIONAL AND TEEN ADVICE • Toby Rose ASK TOBY I have been accepted Early Decision by my dream school, Tulane. Now my economic status has changed; my dad lost his job. What can I do? You need to email your Early Decision School and explain the entire situation. Then apply to a school that meets your economic needs. Tulane needs to release you from your Early Decision commitment before you can attend another college. It will be very important to prove your situation to Tulane. Many students fake your situation just to be released because they have found another school they would rather attend.

Ly Espinol

Why do the colleges make it so difficult to apply? Online applications are a real pain. I agree, online applications are a pain. It was much easier before computers arrived. Only after a student/parent actually completes an application will they begin to understand the utter frustration of the entire college application process. I recently came to the United States from France. I really am having trouble coping with all my schoolwork and the customs of the American teenager. Where do I begin? I truly understand your situation. Currently I am working with at least 10 students who have recently moved to Miami. Moving is hard enough as it is and on a teenager it can be very stressful. Please call me at 305-238-7737 to set up an appointment and hopefully I will be able to teach you how to navigate the waters of your new community.

How old should children be when I have my first discussions on tough topics, such as drugs, drinking and sex? Believe it or not, the average age for kids to start drinking is 13, so I recommend that parents have as many informal talks with their kids as the subjects come up. There is no definitive time, except early. Elementary school is the time to really weave sensitive subjects into pick-ups after school, like taking your daughter to ballet or picking up your son from football practice. It is a wise parent who spends as much time as possible with their kids after school when they are in elementary school. This is the time that you will start talking, perhaps even second or third grade; it’s not too early. By middle school — sixth, seventh and eighth grades — most kids are playing “scavenger. That is a game where kids go into the closets — your closets, their grandparents’ closets and friends’ closets — and take pills from any container, then they go to a party and start popping the pills to see who can pass out first. So it’s never too early and there’s never enough time — talk, talk, talk, until you’re sick of hearing yourself. My son has autism and I haven’t heard of any research facility that has hope for all of us who suffer with children of this disease. What is going on in this field? I can only tell you that it’s slow, but progress is progress. The University of Miami medical school got $20 million to fight autism. That’s a great gift. Research takes time, and everyday more and more children are being diagnosed with autism. More and more children mean more and more research because parents are demanding and asking questions of pediatricians and other doctors that at this point are very difficult, if not impossible to answer. I think if a particular cause interests you, you need to write your congressman, email them about research for different areas.

Toyota’s troubles accelerate as pedal problems continue

Al Sunshine 4 YOUR MONEY You’re probably going to be hearing a lot more about Toyota’s huge recall over the coming days and it could get very confusing. Congressional investigations will continue to question when Toyota first knew about problems in millions of its top selling cars, trucks and SUVs, and if it responded quickly enough to prevent accidents, injuries and deaths to U.S. consumers. Congress also is focusing on when top U.S. safety officials at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, better known as NHTSA, first knew about Toyota’s troubles and if the agency did enough to protect consumers. Lost in the middle are the millions of Toyota owners who are still wondering if their vehicles are safe. Toyota continues to insist it has found the accelerator problem that led to dozens of complaints of unintended accelerations. Toyota continues to insist it is working hard to fix the accelerator defect and is even offering free loaner vehicles and pick-up service to get its owners vehicles into its repair shops to install “The Fix.” But there are now new concerns that “The Fix” doesn’t really solve the problem. There also are new consumer reports allegedly complaining that their recalled Toyota vehicles still are suffering from acceleration problems. That has prompted the head of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, David Strickland, to reach out to Toyota owners nationwide. “NHTSA has already started contacting consumers about these complaints to get to the bottom of the problem and to make sure Toyota is doing everything possible to make its vehicles safe,” Strickland said. “If Toyota owners are still experiencing sudden acceleration incidents after taking their cars to the dealership, we want to know about it.” Sean Kane runs Massachusetts-based

Safety Strategies and Research Inc., a private Automotive Safety Research Service, and he has been in the business for quite a long time. He also has been involved in some of the biggest auto safety defect cases in the country, including the Ford-Firestone cases. He has been raising questions for quite awhile about whether Toyota’s sudden acceleration problem was really caused by faulty floor mats or faulty gas pedals. He just published a new report called “The Cracks in Toyota’s Recall Are Showing Again.” Kane writes that NHTSA is receiving complaints from owners of “fixed” vehicles that claim the Toyotas still are having accelerator problems. He writes that within five days of Toyota’s assurances, several consumers offered a little anecdotal evidence to NHTSA that indicated their cars still had the same problems. So, does “The Fix” work or not? Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood reportedly said he was concerned that NHTSA may lack the engineering and computer skills to test and understand how Toyota’s high tech “Fly by Wire” electronic acceleration system works. Automotive controls are getting close to resembling the electronic systems in airplanes. The old accelerator pedal simply isn’t what it used to be. Personally, I believe that even U.S. safety experts may be spending weeks or months trying to independently verify Toyota’s declaration that it has found the problem and is installing “The Fix” on millions of U.S. vehicles. So, is the problem fixed? Toyota insists that it is. But there are new signs the problems may be more complex and “The Fix” may not really solve the problem of sudden, unintended accelerations. For now, even top U.S. safety officials don’t seem sure. Congress still is investigating; Toyota still is repairing recalled vehicles, and U.S. Consumers are going to be even more confused about whether the Toyota vehicles they are driving are really as safe as they should be.
