Biscayne Cove dedicates new guardhouse and gates City of Aventura officials joined Miami-Dade Comm. Sally Heyman recently to help Biscayne Cove Condominium residents celebrate the 29th anniversary of their community by breaking ground for their new guardhouse and gates. Salini Design and Caballerieo Construction partnered on this project which received an unprecedented 88% positive vote from the residents.
Madeline Giardello, president of the Biscayne Cove Board of Directors, said, "In an affluent neighborhood, privacy means exclusivity, resulting in increased property values. A gated community helps reduce crime, creates a better place to live and provides a safe lifestyle."

The Law of Inertia
Patricia D. Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING Physics is the science that deals with the properties and interactions of matter and energy. There is a phenomenon in physics called inertia. It states that an object will continue in its initial state of rest or motion until an external force is applied. A ball in motion will stay in motion until it is acted upon and diverted or stopped by something or someone. The law of inertia may be the defining state of your being. You may be in a state of motion but you may need to be stopped and diverted because you are going in the wrong direction. You may be moving on a path of self-destruction. You may need to stop or be stopped and assess where you are going and why. Being constantly in motion is not always the answer. You need to have a purposeful direction. You may be in a state of rest. According to the law of inertia you will remain in that state until something or someone intervenes. If that never happens you will remain at rest forever.
You do not have to wait for an outside force. You can be the one to act and overcome your inertia. You do not have to remain motionless. You can be a force in your own life. You can shake off your apathy and indifference. You need to arouse your interest and awaken your feelings. Become active. Exert some energy. Respond to people and things. React to the situations around you. Although inertia describes a physical state it is also a psychological state. What are the roadblocks that you must overcome to get going? What rocks have to be removed? Fear could be one big rock with smaller rocks like fear of the unknown, fear of failure or fear of disappointment. Another cluster of rocks could be lack of self-confidence and a lack of belief in yourself or that you do not deserve any more or any better. If there are too many rocks or they are too big or too heavy you may not have the psychological strength to move them. You can ask for help. Sometimes you do not have to remove the rocks you can simply climb over them. Regardless of your particular state of inertia take some time to become aware of your own reality. Take some time to consider your options and then act upon them. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. She can be reached at 305788-4864, 212-308-0309.

Gerald Schwartz, president of the Bnai Zion Foundation in Florida said, "The interchange between Aventura Hospital and the Bnai Zion Hospital and Medical Center in Haifa, Israel, is a natural. Dr. Calderon's research involving saving limbs of diabetic patients is of special interest to Aventura and its large community of seniors." Guests from the medical staff, hospital staff, Board of Trustees and the community turned out to hear Dr. Calderon share his knowledge on this specialized limb salvage program. "Most of the patients I treated using ozone therapy had been turned down for other treatments and were candidates for amputation," Dr. Calderon explained. "We were able to close the wounds and save the limbs for approximately 85% of those patients." "We are certainly excited to welcome Dr. Calderon to our facility," remarked Judy Newman, Director of Diabetes Education and the Wound Care Center at Aventura Hospital. "We have a similar program here at our wound care center where we use hyperbaric oxygen therapy to help heal difficult wounds, especially in our diabetic patients. VIEWPOINT Why our Taliban’s gaining traction The Right’s Obsession with BY JOHN FEFFER The Dutch government is the Afghanistan War's latest casualty. When the Labor Party recently exited the Netherlands' ruling coalition government to protest the extension of the Dutch deployment in Afghanistan, the Taliban rejoiced. Perhaps you thought I meant Afghanistan's Taliban. No, I meant the Taliban in the Netherlands. Never heard of it? It's the "Freedom Party," and it's poised to become a top vote-getter in the elections scheduled for early June because of the ruling coalition's collapse. Freedom Party leader Geert Wilders would violently object to his party being labeled the Dutch Taliban. He's anti-Islam, after all, and has famously called the Koran a "fascist book." But the far-right wing in the Netherlands--and its counterparts across Europe--is just as intolerant and narrow-minded and xenophobic as the radical Islamists it dislikes so much in Afghanistan. Both Talibans consider their own societies too tolerant. They want their religious traditions to be dominant. They disdain modern governments, but they're happy to manipulate those state apparatuses to impose their own values. But here's an interesting twist. Wilders and the Freedom Party want the Dutch out of Afghanistan. It's perhaps no surprise that a populist party should adopt a popular position--58 percent of Dutch want out of Afghanistan, compared to only 35 percent who want to stay. It's part of a larger trend. Public opinion throughout Europe has decisively turned against the war. But the European left, by and large, hasn't taken advantage of this sentiment. The Democratic Party in our country faces a similar quandary. Obama's Afghanistan surge rebranded the Dems, for the umpteenth time, as the war party. So where some fear to tread, others rush in boldly. Ron Paul's anti-war message at the recent Conservative Political Action Conference, for instance, helped boost him to the top of the event's presidential straw poll. This anti-war message will become more popular with November's midterm elections looming. It doesn't look like Obama will bring all combat troops home from Iraq by August. More Americans oppose the Afghanistan War than back it (52 percent vs. 47 percent, according to a
recent CNN poll). And that gap will likely widen. The Europeans--and the Canadians and Australians--are about to begin bringing their troops home. The Afghanistan War will generate more and more U.S. casualties (we just went over 1,000). A rising number of Afghan casualties--such as the 27 civilians who died in the recent airstrike on a convoy of buses--will undercut the supposed hearts-and-minds element of the current surge. And the Democratic Party's attempt at both guns and butter will founder as surely as Lyndon Johnson's did in the 1960s. And what about our own intolerant, racist, xenophobic, narrow-minded, religiously conservative political movement? There's some overlap between Christian fundamentalists and anti-government extremists, but they haven't joined hands to form a true U.S. Taliban. Unlike the Dutch Freedom Party, our tea party movement has not taken a prominent position on the war. So far it's focused on a domestic message: free markets, limited government, no taxes. But there's a fight going on inside this movement. Sarah Palin, whose views on war are so naively hawkish as to earn a rebuke from none other than Dick Cheney, aspires to lead that movement. And Ron Paul, whose presidential campaign in 2008 served as the tea party's inspiration, now argues that the Republican Party is exerting a "neocon kind of influence" over the populist groundswell. Unless the Democrats' anti-war faction grabs the steering wheel, the peace movement stands a good chance of getting outflanked. A nativist anti-war movement, which wants "our boys" back home to patrol the borders against the very people who keep our economy going, could steal the populist vote from the Democrats and the left in general. We have to counter with a campaign that translates dollars spent on war into dollars that could be spent on jobs. Let's consider the Dutch political crisis as a warning. There are always people like Geert Wilders waiting in the wings. The last time Democrats screwed up so royally on a war-vs.-economy issue, we got Richard Nixon for nearly six years. This time around, we might get something a whole lot worse. John Feffer is the co-director of Foreign Policy In Focus at the Institute for Policy Studies. www.fpif.org

Abortion and Sex BY WILLIAM A. COLLINS War’s OK, Where thousands die, But one abortion, Makes me cry. Right-wingers maintain a lengthy political agenda. There’s the need for an unfettered military, lower taxes, corporate freedom, unlimited consumption, private (or no) health insurance, expanded empire, and other self-satisfying goals. Then there’s abortion. The Right just doesn’t like it. Abortion, like birth control, allows women to enjoy the pleasures of sex without suffering the penalties of children. Naturally, conservatives aren’t keen on birth control either, except for themselves. Actually, the Right isn’t really into fun. You might assume that their interest in abortion lies in the protection of children. Sorry, guess again. If anything, it’s embryos. Once the kid is born, forget it. These folks show no interest in child care, health care, nutrition, education, welfare, family services, or other common childhood needs. We’ll get you born, kid, but after that you’re on your own. And they’re really good at getting unwanted children born, no matter what the condition of the child or the jeopardy to the mother. The Right isn’t into mothers, just babies before they’re born. In fact, they consider mothers as culprits. They had sex and now must pay the price, even with their lives if need be. Take, for instance, AIDS. Nobody admits to liking AIDS. Even the pope doesn’t favor it. But it’s one of those potential wages of sin, much like unwanted pregnancy,
and according to His Holiness, condoms actually promote the spread of the disease. The only form of birth control he likes is abstinence, a point of view very familiar in American politics. Our federal and state laws often protect medical workers offended by abortion. They can refuse to participate in any part of it, even administrative work, without fear of losing their job. Why, one wonders, did they take the job in the first place? And, one further wonders, could this same principle be extended to National Guard troops who only joined up to protect their state from disaster but are subsequently ordered to invade other countries? Well, no, that doesn’t count. War doesn’t rise to the conscience level of abortion. Especially for women. As soldiers they may be ordered to go out and kill, but they can’t get an abortion in a military hospital. Only lately can they even get a morning-after pill on base. And now arch-conservatives are trying to convince African Americans that abortion clinics on their turf are committing genocide. Further, they're saying that women are actually better off not being covered for abortions by Medicaid. These extremists are also successfully working to keep any abortion coverage out of the upcoming health-care bill. It’s true, right-wing leaders are given to many obsessions (witness the Tea Party), but abortion is in a class by itself. Sex, ideology, and politics make a powerful team, one we’re not likely to see the end of in our lifetime. Minuteman Media columnist William A. Collins is a former state representative and a former mayor of Norwalk, Connecticut.

Epilepsy Foundation schedules annual Walk-a-thon on Apr. 18 BY ED GILHULY
The Miami-Dade office of the Epilepsy Foundation of Florida (EFOF) will conduct its annual Walk-a-thon on Apr. 18 at Tropical Park to raise awareness and funds for a wide variety of services for area residents suffering from epilepsy and seizure disorders. In addition to welcoming individual participants, the EFOF is seeking corporate sponsorships and teams to participate in the organization’s largest fundraising event of the year. All proceeds will support EFOF activities such as direct medical and neuropsychological services, advocacy and counseling, education, prevention and more. More than 360,000 Floridians are stricken with epilepsy and seizure disorders, and about 42,000 people die each year nation-
ally due to seizures and related causes. “We appreciate so much the great number of residents who have come out to our Walk-a-thons to help their friends and families struggling with seizure disorders,” said Karen Egozi, EFOF CEO. “This year we hope to welcome even more people, and especially many new corporate sponsors and teams to raise money and awareness for this great cause.” The Walk-a-thon will begin with registration at 8 a.m. at Tropical Park, 7900 Bird Rd. The actual Walk-a-thon will begin one hour after registration. The event is one of six Walk-a-thons organized by EFOF across the state in April. Others include West Palm Beach, New Smyrna Beach, Broward, Jacksonville and Gainesville. For information, call 1-800-940-6515 or visit online at <www.EpilepsyFLA.org>.

Join Jamie Oliver’s ‘Food Revolution’
SIB REALTY
BY BARI AUERBACH When kids can easily identify burgers, fries and chicken nuggets – but think potatoes are tomatoes, you know it’s time to join Jamie Oliver’s “Food Revolution.” Oliver, a British celebrity chef and best-selling author who previously filmed a show focused on improving the British school lunch program is now coming to America to take on the high statistics of obesity, heart disease and diabetes in the U.S., where children are the first generation not expected to live as long as their parents. In the ABC show “Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution,” Oliver travels to Huntington, West Virgnina, which has earned the dubious distinction “most unhealthy place in the country.” At a local elementary school, he finds kids are being served pizza for breakfast along with a variety of processed foods with mostly unpronounceable ingredients. “I’ve never worked with a family of four that lives on junk food that don’t end up spending less eating fresh—they save an average of $100-$150 a week, which is about $8,000 a year,” Oliver says. On his show and website www.jamieoliver.com/tv, where you can sign a peitition, Oliver is encouraging people of all ages to join in the “Food Revolution” by eating more balanced meals and cooking with fresh ingredients—not only at schools, but also in homes, workplaces and even restaurants. Oliver hopes to help get Huntington eating healthier and start a chain reaction of positive change across the country. “The time is right for people to rediscover the sense of pride, satisfaction and fun you can get from cooking for the people you love,” he says. “Wonderful stories will unfold in Huntington, and hopefully this will inspire the rest of the United States.” The Food Revolution show is loosely based on Oliver’s U.K. series, “Jamie’s Ministry of Food” and “Jamie’s School

Dinners” - which helped get a billion dollars from the British government to improve the standards of school food. First Lady Michelle Obama also recently launched the “Let’s Move” initiative urging the nation’s food giants to put less fat, sugar, and salt in their foods. She is also pushing a child nutrition bill through Congress to tighten up the standards of food served in public schools. The bill is a step in the right direction but Oliver feels it’s not a victory. “It’s great that we’ve got new standards, but if the right amount of funds aren’t delivered in conjunction, then we won’t be able to meet those standards.” Oliver hopes to get at least one million people to sign his petition. “This will allow me to go to Capitol Hill and present this issue,” he said. “We want to make sure every kid gets good, fresh food at school. It’s proven that ‘real food’ promotes more effective learning. I need to be able to show President [Barack Obama] and the industry how many of you out there really care about this issue so please don’t wait, sign up today.” www.jamieoliver.com/tv

‘SummerJazz’ series at Naples Beach Hotel begins June 6 BY KAREN LAMONICA
The smooth sounds of jazz continue this summer at the Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club’s 25th annual “SummerJazz on the Gulf” free concert series. Beautiful sunsets, gorgeous views of the Gulf and refreshing breezes provide the perfect backdrop for the free concert series held on the resort’s scenic Watkins Lawn overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. “SummerJazz on the Gulf” takes place one Saturday evening per month from 7-10 p.m. beginning June 26, followed by July 24, Aug. 28, and Sept. 18. The entertainment lineup is not yet set, but last year’s entertainment included performances by Alan Darcy, Late Night Brass, Women’s Blues Revue and Big Night Out. There will be parking just north of the hotel at Lowdermilk Park, with free parking provided to those with a Naples beach sticker. Free trolley service running to and from the resort is also available. Guests may bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating, but coolers are not permitted. In conjunction with each concert, the Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club will offer a special “SummerJazz Rate” for concert
goers who wish to stay at the resort on those nights. The rate starts at $149 per room, per night and includes complimentary greens fees on the resort’s championship golf course, two reserved beach chairs, unlimited tennis, access to the resort’s world-class Spa and complete Fitness Center (with use of the exercise room, whirlpool, sauna and steam room), valet parking, afternoon tea and cookies at 4 p.m. daily and admission for children five to 12 in the morning activities of the Beach Klub 4 Kids supervised child activity program. While the greens fees are complimentary with the special rate, there is a cart fee. Guests attending “SummerJazz on the Gulf” should consider dining at the resort’s HB’s on the Gulf, the city of Naples’ only beachfront restaurant, which serves fresh Florida seafood and traditional American favorites. Patrons also can enjoy a specialty drink at the Sunset Beach Bar, named Naples’ “Best Beach Bar” by the Travel Channel. Refreshments also will be available for purchase at each concert. The Miami-Dade County Health Department recently was awarded a grant in the amount of $14.7 million for a prevention program in the county. This grant award is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Communities Putting Prevention to Work initiative to support public health efforts to reduce obesity, increase physical activity, improve nutrition, and decrease smoking — four critical actions for combating chronic diseases and promoting health. The $372.8 million, funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, was awarded to 44 communities, including cities, towns, and tribes. These communities are receiving awards to implement policy, systems and environmental change strategies during the next two years as one of several initiatives of HHS Communities Putting Prevention to Work. “This is a wonderful opportunity for our community,” said Lillian Rivera, RN, MSN, PhD, administrator of the Miami-Dade County Health Department. “With this funding our community will be able to expand access to fresh fruits and vegetables
through community gardens and farms to institutions, promote healthy options in vending machines, promote breastfeeding, invest in activities that promotes physical activity, incorporate standards in community planning designs that encourage physical activity and enhance the safe routes to school and park programs,” Rivera added. The competitive funding awards to cities, towns, and tribes across the country will allow communities to support healthy choices among their residents through a variety of methods including increasing the availability of healthy foods and beverages, improving access to safe places for physical activity, discouraging tobacco use, and encouraging smoke-free environments. A few examples of the work that the Miami-Dade County Health Department will be doing include community gardens, farmers markets, and safe routes to schools and parks. Michael Dezer seen with his Cadillac desk
––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
BY MANDY WEIGHTMAN It is only fitting that Florida, the leading state in “over-the-top” attractions, becomes home to one of the most unique automobile experiences in the world. Michael Dezer, of Dezer Properties and Dezer Hotels, is renowned for his luxury condominiums, hotels and real estate ventures in New York and South Florida, including the Trump International Beach Resort in Sunny Isles Beach, which is just minutes away from the new Dezer Collection site. Dezer also has been an avid collector of automobiles, motor bikes, memorabilia and other oddities ever since he immigrated to the United States in 1962 and began this prolific collection. From airplanes to boats, microcars to land yachts, scooters to famous Hollywood star cars, Dezer’s collection has grown to more than 600 of the most unusual vehicles in a private collection in the world. Joining him with this new Dezer Collection venture, is car authority and curator Brian Grams, originally from the family owned and operated Volo Auto Museum in Illinois, which opened in 1960. Gram’s passion for cars and numerous years spent learning from the ground up, have developed his knowledge and expertise in all car areas and solidified his reputation as one of the foremost buyers and sellers of vehicles, especially Hollywood star cars. Dezer’s love for the American flashy 50s era led to his establishing New York’s Dezerland Entertainment Center in the late 1980s. This five-story warehouse on New York’s 11th Avenue became the ultimate “step-back-in-time50s fantasy!” The ground floor housed the “Hot-Rod Dance Club” with booths made from cutdown car bodies and a 500-seat theater dedicated to concerts by rock’s golden-oldie brigade. The second floor had the American
Classics drive-in theater where patrons could enjoy the silver screen movies from one of the 50s convertibles set up in front of the screen. The top three floors were dedicated to Michael’s Car Collection, which, at the time, included over 40 Cadillacs. Dezerland also featured a memorabilia shop, an ice-cream parlor and several private party and event rooms. After moving to Florida and making it his permanent home base, Dezer has elected to bring this New York “Dezerland” feel to the new Dezer Collection in North Miami. “Most people flock to the beach for a day of relaxing, but I prefer to surround myself with memories of eras gone by,” he said. “Every piece in my collection has a different memory and after keeping my collection private for the past 48 years I am ready to share it with the community so that others can also take a walk down memory lane.” Dezer says he was pleased to welcome Brian Grams on board. “Two weeks after I visited the Volo Museum in Illinois I received an email from Brian expressing great interest in the Dezer Collection project,” he said. “His vast experience will help bring my vision to fruition.” The new Florida Dezer Collection–Museum and Pavilion, at 2000 NE 146 St., is slated to open in the fall and has over 61,000 square feet of event, banquet and entertainment space, seating from 100-1,500 people, as well as the Car Museum with over 600 vehicles, a classic car dealership and an antique mall. Entertainment options will include tours of the Dezer Car Museum, minibowling, arcade with Wii Rock Band, a 1950s drive-in movie theater, a 1950s Retro Diner, an ice cream and candy store, gift store, memorabilia store and much more. MindBuilders helps couples build healthy relationships with relationship coaching BY DEBORAH BRUNO, LCSW The media frenzy regarding affairs and marital difficulties is on the rise. Affairs represent the most significant threat to marriages and families today. Over 50% of all marriages in the U.S. end in divorce. Seventeen percent of those divorces are due to infidelity. Sixty percent of males will have an affair and forty percent of women will have an affair while married. What causes people to have an affair when they love their spouse? Bottom-line. There are many reasons. Some feel it is against human nature to be monogamous. Some feel it is related to brain chemistry or sexual addiction, some blame it on a weak moment or bad decision, but most blame it on a bad marriage or relationship. When working with couples it is important to identify what causes the relationship to be so unhealthy. Just as our bodies become ill if we don’t treat it right so does our relationship. But, what causes the relationship to become so unhealthy? There are four main reasons why a marriage or relationship can become unhealthy. The first is Conflict. Having too much conflict or not enough is indicative of communication problems. When I first assess couples it is very apparent that the communication is certainly a primary challenge and a goal of relationship coaching. The second is Closeness. Naturally, if you improve communication you will feel closer to your partner.
The third and fourth are critical pieces for the relationship to remain healthy. Those two areas are Excitement and Pleasure. Many describe the unhealthy relationship as boring and routine oriented. Keeping the excitement and pleasure in your marriage or relationship requires good coaching. These two are critical and essential in the sexual area as these are the same triggers that are likely to motivate infidelity. The power of relationship coaching has helped many couples create changes in achieving a healthy relationship. Generally people take their relationships for granted and think that it works on automatic pilot. But, reality says that if the relationship requires work it must not be right. Wrong! When couples are in the early stages of a relationship, it seems so exciting and new. Then reality does set in, work is about to begin. Except if you are having an affair. That’s a constant high. Whatever shape your relationship or marriage is in it can be worked on so you can achieve a happy, healthy and loving longterm relationship. Dumb is better? That is what net neutrality advocates would have us believe. Their basic belief is that broadband networks should be pipes that indifferently pass information packets from one location to another, allowing content providers and customers equal opportunity to do whatever they want. Who could be against that? People interested in innovation and customer welfare. Remember Al Gore calling the Internet the Information Super Highway? The metaphor wasn’t and isn’t perfect, but it is instructive. Suppose we applied net neutrality to our transportation system – there would be no high occupancy vehicle lanes during rush hour, no car only lanes on interstates, and no toll road as an alternative to I-95 in South Florida. Transportation would be more costly and provide less value. Forcing net neutrality would have similar results. Time sensitive information, such as stock market transactions, would wait in line behind football game highlights. Financial dealings that would benefit from extra security would be given no better treatment than a Twitter from Taylor Swift’s E! interview. If you are thinking that it sounds like net neutrality restricts innovation and hurts customers, you’re right. Our research has shown that net neutrality limits innovation, contrary to the claims of the net neutrality proponents. How can this be? Imagine a one dimensional network – one that does noth-
ing but carry information from point to point, which is how the old Internet has worked. What kinds of content providers flourish in that context? Those big enough to distribute their software across the net and those whose software takes advantage of the great bandwidth that they don’t have to pay for. Now suppose that the network can offer enhancements that improve customers’ experiences. Content providers whose sites would not benefit from such enhancements could ignore the offering. But there will be some content providers who could improve their services by buying the enhancements, such as priority packet delivery. These sites become better without net neutrality and offer customers more service. In other words, there is more innovation and greater customer welfare without net neutrality than with it. Today’s successful Internet sites face great competition if we move beyond net neutrality principles. That probably explains why they are net neutrality’s strongest advocates. But moving beyond a dumb network is better for customers, sites that find new opportunities and networks. It should be no surprise that dumb isn’t better. In an innovation driven economy, restrictions don’t make us better. They hold us back. * The authors are Dr. Mark A. Jamison, Director, Public Utility Research Center, University of Florida and Dr. Janice Hauge, Associate Professor, Department of Economics, University of North Texas.

Mitsubishi Outlander is redesigned for 2010 Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS The Mitsubishi Outlander has been restyled for 2010 and now comes in four different trim levels — ES, SE, XLS and GT. The Outlander is based on Mitsubishi’s performance-engineered global platform that also forms the foundation of the new-generation Lancer and Lancer Evolution models. It has a rigid unibody structure that allows for a sport-tuned suspension and a smooth ride. Standard on the Outlander is a Lancer Evolution-inspired lightweight aluminum roof panel, which lowers the center of gravity for better handling. The Outlander has a new and distinctive jet fighter-look to its grille, with the GT getting a blacked out front bumper cover design and a lightweight aluminum roof, while the SE models (2WD and 4WD) have an optional compact third-row of seats that stow beneath the floor, expanding the seating from five to seven. All have a new hood, fenders, rear quarter panel fascia, door mirrors, headlights,
side sill extensions, and a mesh grille. The SE, XLS and GT models have chrome accents on the side sill extensions and grille. A flat-fold tailgate is another nice standard feature that makes loading and access to the rear storage area easier. Under the hood, Outlander ES and SE models are equipped with a 2.4-liter MIVEC four-cylinder engine that produces 168 hp and 167 pounds-feet of torque, both mated to a standard CVT Sportronic transmission. The XLS and GT models have a more powerful 3.0-liter 230 hp MIVEC V-6 (18/24 mpg) engine that develops 215 pounds-feet of torque with a standard six-speed Sportronic transmission. The ES, SE and XLS models are available with 2WD or AWC, while the top-of-the line GT comes standard exclusively with SuperAll Wheel Control (S-AWC). Front suspension strut tower bars enhance Outlander’s lateral rigidity and allow for precise steering response, while the rear multilink suspension provides an excellent balance of handling and comfort. ES models come with 16-inch steel wheels and aluminum alloy wheels are optional, both with 215/70R16 tires. Outlander SE, XLS, and GT models have 18inch aluminum-alloy wheels as standard equipment, with 225/55R18 all-season tires.
Outlander has distinctive mesh grill, a new hood, fenders, door mirrors, headlights and side sill extensions. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– A drive-mode dial on the center console with no subscription fee. Dedication to Mount Sinai Medical Center’s Mission Yields Successful Results for 2009 BY JOANNA PALMER Demonstrating the fortitude to address a challenging healthcare environment, president and C.E.O. Steven D. Sonenreich has led Mount Sinai Medical Center to financial stability and successfully reinforced its image as a healthcare leader. The most recent audit posted on March 26 reports nearly $14 million in profit for 2009. Mount Sinai experienced an overall 5 percent growth in revenue from $497 million in 2008 to $524 million in 2009, while controlling a targeted 1 percent increase in expenses. As of the end of 2009, the combined medical center and Foundation reported 108 days cash on hand. Michael M. Adler, chairman of the board, credits Mount Sinai success to three key points: “Leadership is focused on the hospital’s core mission to provide high quality care, diligence in the hospital’s revenue cycle, and celebrating Mount Sinai’s philanthropic supporters.“ Heart Care with the Best Results According to the Agency for Healthcare Administration Statistics, Mount Sinai had been the region’s leader in heart care for more than two decades. However, this lead began to shrink in 2008. To achieve success, Sonenreich recruited Dr. Joseph Lamelas in 2008 to join the hospital as a chief of Cardiac Surgery. A pioneer in minimally invasive valve surgery, Dr. Lamelas is the most successful cardiac surgeon in the tri-county area. His mortality rate is 67.5% below the expected rate of mortality as forecast by the state of Florida based on his volume and complexity of procedures. Having performed more than 8,000 open-heart procedures in his career, Lamelas also trains surgeons throughout the world in advanced and innovative surgical techniques. The new cardiac surgery team attracted 51 percent more patients growing from 430 cardiac surgeries in 2008 to 649 in 2009 and instituted efficiencies that continue to save the hospital thousands of dollars per procedure. The infection rate is significantly below national benchmarks and length of stay is cut in half. Patients are back on their feet in less than two weeks. Even Canadian Prime Minister, Danny Williams of Newfoundland and Labrador, chose Dr. Lamelas to fix his heart last month saying, “This was my heart, my choice, and my health.” The hospital made even greater strides in recent months with the inauguration of the Mount Sinai Heart Institute in partnership with New York’s Columbia University, the only Ivy League collabora-
tion in South Florida of its kind. Dr. Gervasio Lamas, Chief of Cardiology at Mount Sinai, collaborated with Dr. Allan Schwartz, Chief of Cardiology at Columbia University, for almost a year in order to build the framework that made this partnership possible. “Mount Sinai’s 53 year commitment to academic and medical innovation brought us together,” said Allan Schwartz, M.D. Florida International University Dean John Rock commented that “the partnership with Columbia University has definitely enhanced Mount Sinai’s role in cardiovascular care and innovation and is a significant service to our community.” Redefining Radiology Mount Sinai was also faced with challenges in diagnostic imaging, where the radiology residency pass rate had declined on professional board exams and the department was mired in inefficiency. When encouraged to increase the number of subspecialists in radiology and improve overall care, the then existing radiology group fought back, giving 30 days notice of a mass resignation which would have left patients without the proper care needed. At this critical juncture, Sonenreich reacted quickly to redefine the department of radiology, which resulted in the recruitment of Dr. Jeffrey Neitlich to serve as the chair of the Department of Radiology. Dr. Neitlich immediately went to work, building a multidisciplinary team with expertise ranging from virtual colonoscopies to neurointerventional procedures. Since then, patient care has improved significantly and the pass rate on professional board exams has shot to 100 percent. Mount Sinai’s
imaging volume increased nearly 10 percent in 2009. Breaking New Ground Continuing to place the needs of patients and the community first, Michael M. Adler and the Board of Trustees remained steadfast in support of furthering Mount Sinai’s mission of high quality health care and increased access. Sonenreich expanded the hospital’s surgical oncology program, acquired the da Vinci Robot to provide the most sophisticated minimally invasive treatments, and put the infrastructure in place for Mount Sinai to gain designation as a Comprehensive Stroke Center. There are only 16 accredited comprehensive centers in the entire state of Florida. “Mount Sinai’s medical staff is truly a notch above the rest,” said Tony Carvalho, president of the Florida Safety Net Hospital Alliance. “The physicians who choose teaching hospitals care about future of medicine; they want to be challenged; they want to be innovative.” Mount Sinai’s minimally invasive surgical program is a great example of this dedication. The medical center’s surgical oncologists are the first in Florida to install a laparoscopic technology called microwave ablation. This tool uses ultrasound guidance to directly eradicate tumors. Mount Sinai experienced further strategic success with the opening of its Freestanding Emergency Room in Aventura, Florida. Last year alone, more than 13,000 people have sought care at the freestanding ER in Aventura. Patients have experienced practically zero wait time and the ER has made a significant contribution to the hospital’s revenue stream. Mount
Sinai’s broad array of board certified specialists and subspecialists provide outstanding coverage in a region that is experiencing a reduction in tertiary emergency coverage. Back to Basics Sonenreich believes in a team approach to success. He recruited a strong management team that is dedicated to continuous performance improvement, including developing a strong revenue cycle and achieving many best-demonstrated practices in the nation. Nathan Kaufman, a nationally renowned expert in the areas of peak performing hospitals, lauded Mount Sinai, “2007 through 2009 were especially difficult years for hospital performance. Mount Sinai’s success is a testament to the capability of the management team and the governing board. It’s a text book example of how to bring expenses under control, while taking sound steps to improve the revenue stream.” In addition, hospital administrators and team leaders focused on meeting or exceeding standards necessary to gain accreditation and national recognition in a number of key medical specialties. As a result, Mount Sinai continues to be acknowledged for medical excellence by numerous accrediting agencies and ranking organizations. Focus on Philanthropy Sonenreich emphasizes that Mount Sinai’s donors are a critical component of its success. Mount Sinai was established 60 years ago, with the help of visionary community leaders and philanthropists who responded to the need for a new hospital on Miami Beach. Philanthropy still plays a major role. Sonenreich personally reaches out to donors, shares Mount Sinai’s vision and gives them a true stake in its future. They have responded with renewed support and a strengthened level of commitment to the medical center. Philanthropist Donald Golden remarked, “I support Mount Sinai because I believe in its mission and trust Steve Sonenreich to put the hospital and its future above anything else. I know how important Mount Sinai is to our community and donors like me are willing to make significant philanthropic gifts to provide the equipment and support the services the hospital needs to remain viable.” Adler said, “During his eight and a half years at the helm of Mount Sinai Medical Center, Sonenreich has positioned the landmark teaching hospital for impressive growth. The winners are the patients of Mount Sinai and the South Florida community.”

Recognize nation’s veterans with memorial brick purchase BY ROBERT HAMILTON
The Veterans’ Memorial in downtown Homestead’s Losner Park offers a great opportunity to recognize the sacrifices and contributions of veterans who have served our great country and those who are serving now. An engraved memorial brick can be purchased for $50 for placement in the memorial before Memorial Day. Application forms are available Tuesdays through Saturdays from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Historic Homestead Town Hall Museum at 41 N. Krome Ave. across from Losner Park in downtown Homestead. Forms also are available at the Greater Homestead/Florida City Chamber of Commerce, 212 NW First
Ave., just west of Krome Avenue. The Veterans’ Memorial is a long-term project of the Military Affairs Committee (MAC) of the chamber. MAC has made an attempt to honor all military members who have lost their lives in service to our country since WWI with the help of grants from First National Bank of South Florida. All other veterans and those still serving can be honored by family or friends through the purchase of a memorial brick. In order for the bricks to be engraved and installed by Memorial Day, orders must be received no later than Apr. 30. For more information, call Bob Jensen at 305-248-0976, Ruth Campbell at 305-2424463, or Mary Finlan at 305-247-2332.
