Maggi was inspired by his grandparents, who launched their food service careers in Milan, Italy at the turn of the century. The legacy continued with his parents, owners of Maggi's Restaurant in Connecticut and was then carried on when Joseph Maggi opened The Fish Grill, gaining recognition from "Best Restaurants in Florida." Today, the Maggi recipe for success is still earning rave reviews at Joseph's on the Water, where Joseph personally inspects all the seafood arriving at the restaurant. Teams from the UBS, Coconut Grove Bank, Granoff Enterprises, Federal Commercial Financial Services, and Wells Fargo Advisors concurred economic commentators from CNN would highly recommend Joseph's exceptionally priced menu featuring generous portions for lunch, dinner or catered events. Just some of Joseph's specialties include fresh Snapper SoufflĂŠ; Baked Stuffed Shrimp; Sesame Seared Tuna; Maine Lobster; and Surf & Turf, joining tender N.Y. sirloin steak with a

Robert J. Cubeddu, M.D. appointed Medical Director, Structural and Adult Congenital Heart Intervention at Aventura Hospital Traditionally, heart valves have been repaired or replaced using open heart surgery. But for those patients considered too high risk for conventional surgery, a new and innovative procedure may provide a healthy alternative. Dr. Robert J. Cubeddu is a board certified interventional cardiologist and one of the very few to hold a subspecialty in "Structural and Adult Congenital Heart Interventions," a new cardiovascular field that uses catheter-based technology to provide patients a less invasive and attractive alternative to open-heart surgery. Dr. Cubeddu has brought his expertise to Aventura Hospital, where he has been appointed the Medical Director of this new Structural and Adult Congenital Heart Intervention Program. Essentially, he is able to repair or replace certain heart valves with catheters, also known as "percutaneous or transcather valve implants or repair." "The percutaneous valve is innovative and of complex Robert J. Cubeddu,MD technology," comments Dr. Cubeddu. They are naturally of porcine origin, however once purified, they are attached to a metallic frame, similar to that of a stent, which can be compressed over the surface of a balloon catheter. By crimping the valve smaller, it may then be introduced through the femoral artery or femoral vein, and advanced to the heart, after creating only a small incision at the level of the groin. Once in place, the balloon is inflated at high pressure to expand and deliver the new artificial valve, which has now substituted the damaged valve. The balloon and catheter is then removed. In other words, the artificial valve, once delivered inside the native one, assumes its function and replaces it without having to remove it. Dr. Cubeddu explains that the fundamental basis of Structural and Adult Congenital Heart Intervention arises from the successful experience gained over the last 30 years with heart catheterizations, balloon angioplasty and stents that are used to open the obstructed coronary arteries. He explains that the very first human percutaneous valve implant was performed in Europe in the year 2000, and since then, it is estimated that more than 8,000 patients world-wide have benefited from this new technology. This technology is particularly useful and important for patients with valvular heart disease that are either inoperable or simply high-risk for conventional surgery. Gulfstream Park closing out live racing this Saturday Gulfstream Park's live racing season concludes Saturday, April 24th with the "Sunshine State Bonanza," an action-packed day featuring a $400,000 series of inaugural races starring Florida-bred horses and a personal appearance by retired champion sprinter Shake You Down. Adding to the festive atmosphere will be a Gulfstream Park cap giveaway, free trackside seating and $1 beer and shot specials. Two races, the $100,000 Island Whirl for 3-year-olds and up, and its female counterpart race for fillies and mares, the $100,000 Capital Get up close and personal with live racing at Request, are a tribute to the generosity of the Gulfstream Park this week Florida Thoroughbred Breeders' and Owners' Association. The TRF with the FTBOA conducts a vocational training program in equine care at the Marion County Correctional Institution in Ocala, Florida. Shake You Down, who won 22 starts including six stakes races and more than $1.4 million in career earnings before retiring in 2007, is now part of this program that teaches prison inmates vocational, emotional and life lessons while learning to care for horses. The Florida-bred Shake You Down, who won the $200,000 Sunshine Million Sprint at Gulfstream Park in 2004, will be paraded before his fans at Gulfstream Park. The $50,000 Carterista Starter and its female counterpart race the $50,000 Coolbythepool Starter will be for turf milers, and the 7-furlong $50,000 Shake You Down for 3-year-old colts and its counterpart the $50,000 Cherokee Frolic for 3-yearold fillies will be for Florida-bred dirt sprinters. The race card concludes with the All-Turf Pick 4, arguably the most popular new bet in racing. Casino fans are in for just as much excitement Saturday evening, as Gulfstream Park will give away a chance to win a new Mini Cooper at 10 p.m. Sunday, April 18th at 10 p.m., members of the casino's Good Luck Player's Club will have a chance to win up to $20,000 in cash in the $80,000 "Shower of Cash" drawing. Of course the racing excitement continues year-round with full card simulcasting, including the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, May 1st. No doubt some of the horses will look familiar: Eskendereya, who won the Fountain of Youth here, is now top-ranked in the Derby, and he'll be competing against Florida Derby champion Ice Box and other Gulfstream Park runners in the most exciting two minutes of sports, truly a testament to the fact that the road to the Kentucky Derby runs through Gulfstream Park. What better place to see America's Race than South Florida's home of championship thoroughbred racing, where heroes are made and records are broken every year? FPL encourages families to conserve together, today and tomorrow As an industry leader in environmental stewardship, FPL encourages its customers and their children to do their part to protect the environment. The third installment of FPL's "Earth Day Is Every Day" campaign is aimed at showing kids how to help their families do just that. "FPL believes in the importance of educating the next generation about energy efficiency and environmental stewardship, which is why we partner with schools and institutions throughout Florida to reinforce that message," said Aletha Player, area manager for FPL. "If you can find ways to make it fun and interesting, kids can be not only beneficiaries of environmental protection efforts, but drivers as well." In addition to helping families treat every day like Earth Day, FPL is hosting environmental awareness events around the state. Recently, FPL employees volunteered statewide for the company's annual Power to Care Day; and on April 22 (Earth Day and Take Your Child to Work Day), FPL's Captain Conservation will give a special performance about energy efficiency to City of Miami employees and their children. FPL encourages families and children to get involved in environmental protection! • Make conservation a day at the beach! Join hundreds of FPL employees volunteering throughout the company's service territory in community events, including beach clean-ups. •Pack lunches in reusable containers to reduce waste, and reward kids when they bring

their container home from school. • Incorporate energy-saving chores into kids' everyday routines - simple responsibilities can make a big difference. • Many electronics draw power even when they're off. Install power strips on electronic equipment, and show your kids how to safely use them. • Observe Earth Day early by taking a night off from the television to enjoy the outdoors. • Today is Earth Day and Take Your Child to Work Day - celebrate both by encouraging kids to reuse paper from office recycling bins. • Are you on Facebook? Here's a page that both you and your kids can be a fan of: www.facebook.com/FPLenergytips • Take children of all ages on an environmentally friendly, educational day trip. Bari Auerbach LIFE IN THE CITY ‘It Makes Census’ Wouldn’t it be great if you knew filling out your 2010 Census form could result in getting “censuble” community improvements and amenities like these: New carwashes: If you’ve ever driven to the gas station at 4 a.m. just to make sure you could go through the carwash without having to wait on a really long line – then make sure you send in your census form. Then maybe more Aventura gas stations can get carwashes – serving to enhance the city’s reputation for being so clean and pristine! Bigger movie seats: Boca already has a movie theater with spacious sofa-style seating-and if you send in your census form, maybe Aventura can get those too! In fact, to save on postage, it would have been a good idea for the Census Bureau to

pass out forms with popcorn since it seems like just about everyone who lives in the city goes to the movies at Aventura Mall every weekend! More gym equipment: To help put an end to the question, “How many sets do you have left?” fill out your census form and perhaps Aventura gyms will become eligible to get more machines in order to meet the demand for all the new people deciding a membership is much more affordable than costly cosmetic surgery procedures. Wider roads: If everyone who’s tired of sitting in traffic sends in their census form, maybe millions of frustrated motorists everywhere can play a part in getting major thoroughfares like Biscayne Boulevard widened to include HOV lanes and maybe even some Aventura Sunpass lanes replacing revenue that may be lost if the red light cameras are deemed unconstitutional. Additional Schools: To help make sure kids continue to get a great education, send in your census form and maybe more new local schools will be built—graduating a whole new generation of literate citizens capable of filling out their 2020 Census forms (in ten minutes or less!)

The Fairmont Turnberry Isle receives "Sales Team of the Year" honors The Fairmont Turnberry Isle sales team, led by 15 year hotel veteran Georg Garnitschnig, proudly stands alone as "Sales Team of the Year" among all Fairmont properties. This is quite an achievement considering the parent company operates over 60 superb hotels and resorts around the world and the tourism industry at large faced particularly challenging circumstances in 2009. The coveted award was recently presented to the resort and is based on revenue per available room (RevPar), an industry statistic that indicates financial performance; contracted revenue achievements; Fairmont's service standards and sales excellence scores. Here are some of the impressive numbers that sealed victory for Fairmont Turnberry Isle: In 2009, Fairmont Turnberry Isle increased RevPar Index compared to its competitive set by 17 percent, the largest gain of any property in the Fairmont family. In fact, in some months the resort increased its RevPar Index by an astounding 42.5 percent to end the year with 155.4 percent versus the cumulative Miami marketplace. "I'm extremely proud of this tremendous achievement by Georg and his team. To reach this level of financial performance during a struggling economy is a testament to the commitment of our sales staff, as well as the impeccable service and outstanding amenities Fairmont Turnberry Isle offers" says David Feder, the resort's managing director. Long recognized as the standard by which all Florida resorts are measured, Fairmont Turnberry Isle delights guests with such features as 36 holes of championship golf, the world-renowned Willow Stream Spa, a spectacular Laguna Pool with a waterslide and lazy river, a private beach club and the most attentive service in South Florida. The resort also offers guests the opportunity to experience Michael Mina's Bourbon Steak, the famed restaurateur's only South Florida establishment, as well as

The Victory Center hosts annual Baseball for Autism Awareness Night, April 30th Autism is the fastest-growing developmental disability in the United States. One in every 110 children is diagnosed with Autism, including 1 in 70 boys. This represents a staggering 57 percent increase from 2002 to 2006, and a 600 percent increase in just the past 20 years. Despite some promising discoveries, the cause of Autism is unknown and a cure does not exist. Research and early intervention is crucial. Every 20 minutes another child is diagnosed with Autism. Not only must we find ways to improve the quality of life for children and adults with Autism, but we also must find a cure, and soon. The Victory Center for Autism & Behavioral Challenges would like to make a difference in the fight against Autism by raising money for our educational programs and services and heightening public awareness during Autism Awareness this month. In doing so, on Friday, April 30th, The Victory Center invites you to join them and the Florida Marlins as they host their Annual Baseball for Autism Awareness Night. The Florida Marlins vs. The Washington Nationals will play starting at 7:10 p.m. In order to promote public awareness, tickets are only $40 for Club B seating (regular $54 on game day) and only $30 for Infield Box seating (regular $46 on game day). Proceeds will benefit The Victory Center. Caring for the Caregiver BY PATRICIA C. FRANK If you are a caregiver you probably never think of caring for yourself. You might not even feel entitled to have any needs. If you are a caregiver you are susceptible to many conflicting and competing emotions and to emotional exhaustion. You can suffer from something called “Compassion Fatigue” Caregivers often feel overextended and drained. They experience many different and deliberating emotions. These feelings lower self-esteem and lead to feelings of helplessness and hopelessness. Do not be ashamed of your feelings. Accept them. They are a normal response to your situation. To lessen the effects of these feelings you can learn how to C-A-R-E for yourself. C- is for care-self care. You must carve out time to take care of yourself. A- is for Attention-self attention. You should pay attention to your own feelings. If you stifle them or try to ignore them you will do great psychological, emotional and physical damage to yourself. R- is for rest. Caregivers are victims of

physical and mental exhaustion. They need diversions and distractions which will allow their spirit to recover, restore and recuperate. E- is for everyday. The most important part of self-care for yourself is consistency. The most effective results will come from daily attention to yourself no matter how little time your have to devote to yourself. In order to be a healthy caregiver you will need to set boundaries and create balance in your life. You will need to develop a support system and time management skills. It goes without saying that you will need to be understanding and tolerant. You should strive to be optimistic and positive. Look for the humor in the situation if possible. Be confident in yourself and your ability to cope. Trust yourself. Allow others to help if they will. Stay in the moment. Do not project your concerns into the future. Do not anticipate the worst. Do not judge yourself. Do not criticize yourself. Remember, all you can do is your best. To care for someone else makes you a noble, blessed and loving person, a true angel of mercy. Federal Reserve predicts bumpy road still ahead

Al Sunshine 4 YOUR MONEY Alex Gonzalez is worried about keeping his Doral business open and how long it will take for the local economy to improve. The Doral restaurant owner says, “It’s been tough, really tough these past few months.” And he’s not optimistic his business will improve much over the next few months. The latest reports out of the Federal Reserve Board show it also is concerned about the lagging U.S. housing market, continuing high unemployment, growing foreclosures and continuing declines in the commercial real estate markets. No less than the head of the Federal Reserve Board, Ben Bernanke said recently that, “We are still far from being out of the woods…” following the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression. Lane Jones of Evensky & Katz in Coral

Gables said, “The recovery could see another dip, but I don’t think so, considering the recent improvements we’ve seen. We really have to focus on the gains we’ve seen, but it could still be a bumpy way on the road back.” Almost everyone agrees consumer spending is a key area that needs to improve to keep the recovery moving in the right direction. But the Federal Reserve cautions it only forecasts moderate household spending growth based on continuing tight credit, high unemployment and modest gains in family income. Closer to home, our economy is seeing growing strength in the tourism and residential real estate sectors. Yet it is clear that if the national recovery hits a bump in the road, it will hurt the economy across the country and slow South Florida’s recovery too. And with the approaching summer months just a few weeks off, don’t be surprised if our local economy slows down again as it always does over the summer. Hopefully, it will start picking up more strength again in the fall, as it traditionally has.

A few steps seniors can take to help protect against fraud BY MICHAEL A. SHEAR Protecting your retirement nest egg and sustaining your retirement income are challenging enough. When you add in the fears and concerns unique to older persons, it’s clear that seniors should consider taking extra precautions to guard their investments. Older people can be common targets for fraud and financial crimes. Several qualities that are characteristics of older people tend to make them targets for scam artists and unscrupulous sales people. Older people are generally trusting; they may be home alone during the day; they are accustomed to answering the door or the phone; and they may be reluctant to report fraud. Scam artists are well aware of all this which makes seniors susceptible to the methods unscrupulous people employ, including phone calls, emails, personal sales pitches, and pop-up ads on the Internet. Let’s start with a few basics. Proceed with care; don’t jump into an investment just because you have been approached through one of these communications tactics. Prior to investing in any investment

product or service, it is important that you consider your overall financial situation in order to determine if the product or service is right for you. You should be aware of your liquidity needs, fees and costs associated with an investment, as well as your income needs and the overall risk you can afford to bear with any investment. Beware of misleading information. There is some wisdom to the old adage, “If it seems too good to be true … .” Offers of an investment with an above-average rate of return or income rate and little-to-no risk are almost always deceptive. Some representatives and salespeople may use scare tactics to gain access to seniors’ savings and investments, such as the threat of physical or financial harm, intimidating statements or recurring phone calls. Services described as a “limited-time offer” or any person who pressures you to make an immediate investment decision should also raise a red flag. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or to seek a second opinion. And beware of guarantees to make money or to achieve a guaranteed rate of return. Con artists use promises of high returns to lure people into a financial scam. Free meal seminars may seem appealing. Though many of these events are legit-

imate, some are not. Some of these seminars turn into high-pressure events where you may be given bad advice or pressured to open an account that is not suitable for your financial situation. The cost of a free meal may be greater than you think if it results in your purchasing an unsuitable investment product. Contact your law enforcement agency immediately if you suspect someone is employing fraudulent actions. Investment fraud can take many forms. There are Ponzi schemes, for example, where fraudsters advertise high rates of return on client investments. High payouts may continue until new investors are no longer available. Then the scheme and all the money disappear. Other schemes have been reported, including pyramid schemes, scams involving coins and precious metals, ownership

interests in oil and gas interests, viatical scams, and affinity fraud through community groups, clubs and even places of worship. A healthy skepticism is a wise strategy for seniors when approached by salespeople. For more information about how to protect against financial fraud, obtain the free Wells Fargo Advisors publication Guide to Financial Protection for Older Investors by calling Michael A. Shear at (800) 327 - 3510. There are many ways that you can protect yourself, including monitoring your personal financial information and being selective in providing access to this personal data. Your financial health is an important aspect of your retirement – guard it carefully. Michael A. Shear, Managing DirectorInvestments, Wells Fargo Advisors, Aventura, FL 305-933-6414

Do they know what they are saying ‘no’ to? R. Kenneth Bluh KENNETH’S COMMENTARY If a Republican in Washington said the sky was gray a Democrat would say it was blue. If a Democrat said the clouds were white a Republican would say they were red. Never agree with the opposition — the hell with bipartisanship for the betterment of America. “Preserve the party” at all costs is the modern battle cry in Washington, DC, as well as most state capitals around the nation. David Platt, of Hollywood, FL, summarized it very well in his recent letter to The Miami Herald Reader’s Forum. Mr. Platt, while writing about the potential opening in the U.S. Supreme Court, quoted Sen. Jon Kyl, R-AZ, as saying that he, the senator, “isn’t ruling out a GOP filibuster,” and stated “that the Republicans are already saying ‘no’ without even knowing what they are

saying ‘no’ to.” Every conservative president has nominated a conservative to fill a Supreme Court vacancy. Every liberal president has nominated a liberal to fill a vacancy. The secret is to see how close you must come to the middle of the road in political ideology to obtain the votes needed to approve the nomination and still remain close to the political principles of the president. Justice John Paul Stevens, the leading liberal on the U.S. Supreme Court, has announced that he intends to retire in late June when the court has completed its term. He hopes that the president will appoint his replacement, and the Senate will confirm the nomination in order that the court can continue its agenda in the fall with a full bench. President Obama has stated that he knows he cannot replace Justice Stevens’ experience or wisdom. However, he will seek someone who has similar qualities: an independent mind, a record of excellence and integrity, a fierce dedication to the law and a keen understanding of how the law affects the daily lives of the American people.

–– VIEWPOINT –– Democrats want the process to begin before the fall elections where it is inevitable that Republicans will increase their numbers and be able to put up a bigger fight, apparently, according to Sen. Kyl, against whomever the president nominates. According to the senator, the use of a filibuster is very possible. Unfortunately, this is the way of politics. Push to reduce the power of those in office so the “out-of-power” party can regain control. This works for the politician who is attempting to retain his or her job in Washington. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work for the benefit of the American citizen. I don’t know the answer. However I can make one observation. Basically, we embarrassingly suck up to politicians. We treat them like kings and queens. We heap praise, upon praise on our elected officials until they begin to think that they are in

fact superior to us. Once they have reached this exalted level of thinking, they feel they are invincible and can do no wrong. Self-gratification over service to the community becomes their way of life. Some served so long in the Congress that they have forgotten what it is like on the outside. Perhaps we could start the process of taking back control of our government by treating elected officials as mortals, just like you and me.

BY LEE STEPHENS Make Mother’s Day an occasion to remember this year. Chef Julius Brown and Kitchen 305 has created a all-you-can-eat brunch ($$27.95 per person) for Mother’s Day that the whole family can enjoy with carving stations, made to order pastas and omelets, a fresh seafood display, decadent dessert bar and more. To ensure this holiday brunch is extra special for mom, she will enjoy “bottomless” champagne and a $50 gift card to the Seven Seas Aveda Spa located in the Newport Beachside Hotel & Resort. Moms can come back to the hotel to take advantage of more than 50 luxurious spa treatments including a Fusion “Hot Shell” Massage that utilizes Indonesian Tiger Shells to relieve stress and melt away tension, super-powered, botanical-based Aveda facial treatments or a pampering mani/pedi from the Seven Seas’ Dashing Divas Nail Bar. Musical enjoyment during brunch will be provided by spiritual songbird and author

Estherleon Schwartz who will be singing live, reading poetry and giving candle light blessings from noon to 3:00 p.m. A child Holocaust survivor, Schwartz endured the poverty of food, shelter and safety when she was on the run from the Nazi’s for the first four years of her life before finally escaping in 1944 to Switzerland. Sheltered by nuns in convents through parts of this period, she didn’t realize until now that the DNA of the church music would ultimately play a big role in the Jewish music she sings as a cantor. Schwartz’s inspirational mission is to reach every beating heart and her gifted and compassionate voice has been chronicled in numerous testimonials. The Mother’s Day festivities at Kitchen 305 begin on Sunday May 9 at 11:00 a.m. and end at 4:00 p.m. Kitchen 305 is located inside the Newport Beachside Hotel and Resort at 16701 Collins Avenue in Sunny Isles Beach. Finally, Life? and food? at Gulfstream! Shari Lynn Rothstein-Kramer EAT THIS... DRINK THAT

I’ve only lived in Aventura for 10 years (I know, I am a newbie) but nonethe-less, I am always searching (and praying) for good food, in a great environment, close to home. Now, with Gulfstream’s retail and dining Mecca up and running, it looks as though we have found our place. Folks in Hallandale, Sunny Isles, Aventura, Hollywood, and beyond…rejoice! There is a place where shopping and nightclubs and restaurants (oh my!) can all come together and actually seem to coincide harmoniously. In other words, so far, the Village of Gulfstream Park rocks! So you are walking around, shopping in many of the cute little retail shops and buying up as much as one pair of arms can hold (that is not counting “drop of” trips to the car). I do not know about you, but shopping always works up my appetite. In the past, I would have had to go back to the car and drive somewhere to grab a bite to eat. But now, there are places I’d consider dining establishments all over the place! To the right...to the left…in front of me. It’s so exciting I can barely stand it! And there are eateries to satisfy all kinds of palates. And even better, the Village is still so young, that many of the choices aren’t even open yet. Meaning, if we like it now, we’ll love it later. What I believe was the very first restaurant to open here was Texas de Brazil (954.843.7600). This ever-growing chain of Brazilian-American steakhouses let’s diners have fun with their food. Gauchos come around and slice endless meats onto your plate until you beg them to stop. There is also a soup and salad bar to help fill you up even more. For those who like to eat (and can really consume) – this place is for you! Mexican fans, check out Cantina Laredo (954.457.7662). It is a chain, but has a nice feel to it. The chips are warm, the salsa is spicy, and the Margaritas are delish! They make guacamole tableside, which seems to be the “it” thing these days. For those who love to nibble, entertain, shop, and indulge a bit, you must check out The Cheese Course (954.458.4670. This little bistro also serves as a gourmet shop of sorts, offering more than 100 types of yummy cheese to purchase. It also has salads,

breads, and sandwiches that will transport you right back to your favorite country in Europe. Looking for a bigger, more full-service market? At the time of this writing Jacob’s Classic Market (954.899.4851) had not opened yet, but promises to be the on-site answer to Whole Foods or Fresh Market (okay, maybe Epicure or Milam’s). They’ll offer a variety of items ranging from freshly pre-made meals (for those who do not want to cook) to prime meats and seafood, produce, cheese, deli, and organic groceries for those who do want to cook and control their diets. There’s a lovely bakery and coffee shop, ice cream, and goodies, as well as a catering department that will “cater” to your every whim. I personally can’t wait for this one! For a light bite, Caffé Martier (9954.323.2505) has lovely coffees, gourmet sandwiches and tasty pastries in a sweet and lovely setting. Fine dining can be found at III Forks (954.457.3920) . A ccontemporary and classic steakhouse has a nice bar and lounge scene, can be utilized for private events and offers beef, seafood, and more. With more than 1,500 bottles of wine (seen through glass wine rooms), it’s a must visit. BRIO Tuscan Grille (954-3621600) is another chain that (are you sitting?) – I actually like. It has decent salads, the seafood is fresh and the chops are really good. There are inexpensive Bar Nibbles and $2 off Martinis on Thursday. Can’t beat that! Naturally, Gulfstream has its share of entertaining eateries. Ride the mechanical bull at The Cadillac Ranch (954-4561031). Open for lunch and dinner, you can watch the latest sporting events, have The Sunday brunch and more. Playw right English Pub (954. 457.7563) offers live music, Irish and American favorites. Fans of Fish n Chips, Beef Stew, and Shepherd’s Pie, you need to give this one a shot! Ta-Zin (954.447.1174) , a Moroccan-inspired eatery (with entertainment) is coming soon, And even celeb chef Douglas Rodriguez will be a part of the Stream Scene, opening Ola Cuban, a Latin-inspired seafood place soon There is so much more to write about, but I’ll save that for the next time. If you have not been to Gulfstream…go! You can make a day (and night) of it. Shari Lynn Rothstein has been writing about food, wine, lifestyles and fashion for more than 20 years, in New York and Florida. She resides in Aventura. Never forget the victims of crime BY KATHERINE FERNÁNDEZ RUNDLE

Miami-Dade State Attorney National Crime Victims Rights Week will be celebrated this year from April 18-24. Its focus is to recognize 26 years of rebuilding lives and celebrating the progress made under the Federal Victims of Crime Act that was enacted to center our attention on the progress we have all made in bringing the victims of crime to the forefront of the fight against crime. It is the hard work of every individual in law enforcement, and particularly those working directly with the victims of crime, that makes it possible for crime victims to rebuild their lives. For too long in many parts of our country, victims were expected to be the mute parties in a criminal trial. Victims were expected to be seen but not heard. This has changed a great deal over the past 26 years and the Federal Victims of Crimes Act deserves great credit for what it has allowed us to do. We should also be proud of what we have done in Miami-Dade County, even before we got the federal government to take victims rights more seriously. Here in Miami-Dade, we paved the way for Florida to start thinking about the proper place of victims in our criminal court process. We began Florida’s victim-centered practices and programs, like the Rape Treatment Center, which sought to end the mistreatment of victims in our courts at the time. We created Florida’s first felony

domestic violence unit to help victims break free of the chains of abuse. We were also among the first prosecutors, police and activists to push for constitutional protection for victims’ rights. These efforts are now enshrined in law and we should be very proud as a community. However, there still remains much to do. We remain determined to see that crime victims will never be forced into silence. Through our experiences we know that being a crime victim forever changes a person’s life. During my many years as a line prosecutor and as your State Attorney, I have learned a great deal about the helplessness and grief felt by victims and surviving relatives, and have also been inspired by their courage. Victims who may have been shot, stabbed, beaten, raped or robbed do not easily recover from these physical traumas. Their scars last forever. Nor should we forget the suffering of friends and family members of victims who also feel the anguish of their loved ones. They are victims as well. So I hope we will all pause for a moment during the upcoming National Crime Victims Rights Week in recognition of all those who have been affected by crime as we renew the spirit of deep commitment that has motivated all of us in law enforcement to help crime victims rebuild their lives. Mitsubishi Galant has revised engine, better fuel economy Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS The 2010 Mitsubishi Galant continues as an economical family sedan with nice styling and lots of advanced technology, but don’t look for it with a six-cylinder engine anymore. The front-wheel drive Galant — built in the Mitsubishi plant in Normal, IL — is offered this year in only two trim levels, ES and SE, both powered by a 160-hp 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine paired to a four-speed automatic transmission with a Sportronic manual shift mode. The V-6 Sport and Ralliart models have been dropped from the lineup, though the MIVEC four-cylinder engine has been revised and has an improved highway fuel economy rating (21/30 mpg). Since the Galant got an extensive redesign last year, there are few styling changes in the 2010 edition. Galant rides on a 108.3-inch wheelbase and has an overall length of 191.1 inches. It delivers a respon-

sive performance and crisp handling. Both the ES and more upscale SE models have a new silver painted mesh front grille, better aerodynamics and a more upscale look, while interior sound insulation has been improved to reduce cabin noise. All 2010 Galants come with a host of standard handling aids for improved driver control in virtually all situations, including anti-lock brakes (ABS) with electronic brake-force distribution (EBD), traction control (TCL), and Active Stability Control (ASC). The Galant also has advanced dual-stage front airbags, front seat-mounted side-impact airbags, side front- and rear-curtain airbags, an engine immobilizer, and a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS). The ES comes with 16-inch wheels, auto-off headlights, air conditioning, cruise control and a CD player, while the SE gets 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, a colorkeyed rear spoiler and a chrome exhaust finisher. The SE also comes standard with gray and black sport fabric-trimmed heated front seats, automatic climate control, eight-way power driver’s seat, steering wheel audio controls, fog lights, heated side view mirrors, and theft-deterrent alarm system.

Galant models have a silver painted mesh front grille, improved aerodynamics and upscale styling. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

All Galants come with an auxiliary audio input jack for iPod and MP3 playback, while SE trims get an upgraded 650-watt Rockford Acoustic Design premium audio system with six-disc CD/MP3 playback and eight speakers and a standard DVDbased navigation system with a rear-view backup camera. Included with the system is SIRIUS Satellite Radio with a three-month pre-paid subscription and Bluetooth wire-

less connectivity. Base pricing on the 2010 Mitsubishi Galant ranges from $21,599 for the ES to $23,999 for the SE.

Florida a wintering site for many bird species BY RODNEY BARRETO Chairman, Florida Freshwater Fish & Wildlife Commission

Winter is a great time in Florida. Each time I look out my window, I see robins bobbing on the lawn, or a bird feeder, alive with brightly colored songbirds. It reminds me how important Florida is to our winter avian visitors and, in particular, how important our conservation lands are for these species. It also brings to mind questions about why and how birds migrate. Birds migrate south to avoid the cold, but many species of birds can tolerate cold temperatures if food is plentiful. Biologists reason that birds migrate long distances to take advantage of seasonally abundant food and thereby increase breeding success. A warmer climate offers longer stretches of daylight and plentiful fruits and protein-rich insects, giving migratory birds the potential to raise more young. While there are advantages to migration, the challenges for these long-distance travelers are many. Fortunately, birds are equipped with a variety of unique tools to help them find their way. They rely on navigational cues such as the earth’s magnetic fields, coastlines, mountain ranges and other topographical features and the location of the sun. Star patterns aid those that migrate at night. Birds also take advantage of seasonal winds, which tend to blow in directions that favor migration. Since birds spend as much as half of the year or more en route between breeding grounds and wintering areas, the habitats they depend on during this period are critical links to their survival. For thousands of years, Florida has offered both stopover and wintering sites for many species. Over the past century, development in this state has greatly diminished the extent and productivity of these areas. As this trend continues, public lands and appropriately managed private lands become more important

FWC REPORT for the long-term survival of species, including many of our nonresident winter visitors. It is said that migration is a chain only as strong as its weakest link. Management of conservation lands by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and its partners helps keep the chain strong. By preserving and enhancing habitats that provide cover and food for both resident and migratory birds, the FWC contributes to the continued survival of many species. A healthy and diverse network of natural areas aids the birds that visit our state and the birders as well. Wintering waterfowl, thousands of sandhill cranes and flocks of songbirds entice residents and tourists to grab binoculars and field guides and explore the outdoors. More people are enjoying natural Florida every year and economic growth based on bird watching and ecotourism is proving to be a significant source of income for many of Florida’s rural areas near key birding sites and migratory stopovers. The Great Florida Birding Trail is a project of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. It offers amateur and experienced birders information on some of our most beautiful landscapes and the range of birds they are likely to see. You can find more information about birding locations in your area, as well as other wildlife-viewing opportunities, by visiting MyFWC.com. Florida is one of the top birding locations in the nation, and this time of year, the weather is perfect for getting outdoors and enjoying the many wonders nature has to offer. County, employees worked together toward solution George M. Burgess MIAMI-DADE COUNTY MANAGER

COUNTY REPORT Balancing a budget is one of the easiest things to do. Miami-Dade County lives by the same rule as our families and local businesses: We only spend what we earn, and we spend less when times are hard. But it also is one of the hardest things to do. Just as small drops in income can force families to make impossible choices between medicine and the mortgage, our government has had to cut important programs that touch — and sometimes save — lives. We are fortunate to have amazing and dedicated workers, the people who patrol our streets and put out our fires, rescue our lost pets and maintain our parks. And when falling revenues could have forced us to shut down vital serv-

ices, those employees refused. Instead, they worked with their unions and our government to accept new contracts with unprecedented concessions. They are paying more than ever toward health insurance, forgoing raises and giving up certain types of pay completely. Altogether, we will spend $208 million less on personnel due to these new contracts, and that’s before we finish negotiations with the last two of our 10 unions. They showed great leadership and civic responsibility. None of us took any joy in requesting it, but we should all be proud our workers overwhelmingly agreed to share our collective burden and face our challenges as a team. I have served this community for my entire career and never seen such compromise — not from any mayor, manager, commission or union; not from the county, the school board or the City of Miami. Indeed, our employees realized what a few pessimists in this community ignore: For a problem this complicated,

answers are never simple. We could have refused to negotiate with our workers and unilaterally imposed harsher measures. We could have spent the coming years in a bitter and adversarial relationship with our own public servants, lowering paychecks without the promise of a small adjustment in 2011 to keep up with the cost of living. We rejected that strategy. Instead, we set an example by tempering a hard line on budgets with humanity toward the 29,000 families who serve Miami-Dade County. We listened to the public call for flat tax rates, even though that created a $400 million budget gap, and we decided not to close that entire gap on the shoulders of garbage truck drivers and sewer pipe repairmen. We could have taken away people’s income indefinitely with no eye toward the future, could have snuffed the light at the end of this long tunnel. But simply saying “no” isn’t leadership — it’s a sound bite. Some people might like hearing it, but it is no kind of solution. Too often, we are quick to vilify pub-

lic servants. In a government whose employees are driving ambulances, feeding senior citizens and patching potholes, some people cling to the image of county workers pushing bureaucratic paper across cubicle walls. In fact, Miami-Dade County has fewer employees per resident than we have had for at least 15 years. Adjusted for inflation, the amount of money each resident pays for government is about the same as it was a decade ago and 13 percent lower than it was in 1994 — even though we have added services like the 3-1-1 Answer Center and the Building Better Communities program to invest in our infrastructure. We are proud to work for the residents of the world’s finest community, and I am honored to be counted among Miami-Dade’s employees. We promise to keep looking for creative ways to stretch every tax dollar, to bring our best talent to face our toughest challenges and to never settle for a one-liner masquerading as a solution.

Renovations on schedule at Grand Case Beach Club BY BILL KOFOED From new bathrooms to a new lobster tank - the Grand Case Beach Club is on a renovation roll that will continue to bring “something new to guests by the beginning of the 2010 -11 winter season, according to Steve Wright, General Manager. When the renovation of the last ten bathrooms in the complex is completed, guests will have more space, thanks to the new pocket doors. Other amenities will include mahogany countertops, indirect lighting, new commodes, and mirrors. Every unit will also have new mattresses, as well as new fabrics for all the furnishings. The carpeted stairways in the studio lofts will be replaced with laminate wood. The final phase of the Boardwalk, built among the rocks on the hill overlooking the ocean, has been completed. Not only is there more space for guests to relax and sip cocktails in chaises while watching the fish and boats, but there is now direct access to

the Sunset Cafe, which has a revised menu, a new lobster tank as well as special value entrees available on a daily basis. The Sunset Cafe has also initiated a policy whereby guests have the option of “carrying out their lunches or dinners and dining in the privacy of their room. “Business has been excellent this winter season, said Wright, “with occupancy a little above 90 per cent. It’s almost as good as the 2008 season, which was one of our historical best. The Grand Case Beach Club offers a wide range of activities for its guests. These include the Sunset Cafe, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner plus Happy Hour seven days a week; fully equipped kitchen and satellite TV in each unit; swimming pool, tennis court; fitness center; island boutique; and a water sports center. Room rates include continental breakfast daily and use of all non-motorized water sports equipment. For reservations, call toll free (888) 340-3016 or visit info@gcbc.com.
