event focusing on how the formation of international partnerships has become a powerful force driving today's economy. Quickly capitalizing on strategies for international business success, The McKafka Group already has 64 condo units under contract in downtown Fort Lauderdale, just one block from Las Olas Boulevard; as well as many other real estate ventures currently being negotiated. “We're very optimistic about the future of this country and the global perspective of the economy,” Levy Hara said. “Although this is a tough time, this is still the land of opportunity and the strongest economy in the world. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to buy real estate in the U.S. at better prices than anywhere else in the developed world." Also recognizing the vast potential associated with forging foreign alliances, the Aventura Marketing Council formed an International Committee co-chaired by Levy Hara and immigration attorney Roger Bernstein. The mission of the AMC's International Committee is embodied in Ian McCluskey's vision for Thought Leadership International, comprised of "the world's very best executive coaches, trainers, workshop facilitators and speakers, with years of experience in bringing about change for individuals and corporations worldwide; recognizing the global condition; and pioneering new ways of thinking, acting, understanding and being." Award-winning veteran reporter David Adams, editor of Miami and U.S. editions of Poder Enterprise magazines and Poder360.com, explained Poder is written for a global audience of influential senior business and political decision-makers. Its in-depth, cutting edge editorial coverage and exclusive insider access and information on the U.S. Hispanic market and Latin America have made it an influence in the social, economic, political and cultural arenas.

Wanderings & Ponderings Birthdays Birthdays are very strange things. As a flying but walking leisurely to the next youngster and probably up to the age of birthday. You know age, down here it’s different (30? 40? 50?) you look forward to the added year that you’ve been around and than elsewhere. People have come down here to retire and enjoy the years glory in the fuss made over you by left to them. Then they find others friends and family. To me, I’m who are 15 or 20 years older than wondering, how come they’ve they are and who are working full been coming up so fast lately? time and enjoying what they do. In the last few years I’ve taken I’ve always written about this a pragmatic approach to them. I because it is a reason for encourfind it annoying that another year agement that there are those much has been added and I had no deciolder that are working fulltime at sion in the matter. I didn’t ask for Dan Palmer that added year. It was handed to –––––––––––––– a good clip. What is bothering me me. That is very undemocratic. No vote, no lately is that I’m getting to be that guy. As I’ve told you I’m now on my two year petitions for or against, it was just there for the taking. Who decided that I should take birthday system that will bring some of you who still on the one year birthday system it? Shouldn’t I have a say in it? I decided that from now on I acknowl- passing me by. Then once again I’ll be able edge my birthday every two years. For peo- to say “Sure I’m working, but look at those ple who say “another birthday? time is real- older than me who are still working on a ly flying, follow my idea and you won’t be full time basis who are way older than me.

The McKafka Group hosts ‘International Partners… Driving Today’s Economy’ at Christine Lee’s Continued from page 1 ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– For over a decade, Sun-Sentinel business writer Doreen Hemlock, considered one of the best international business reporters in South Florida, has also been covering international business, tourism and other business areas, working in the U.S., Venezuela, Puerto Rico and Peru. During a panel discussion, Hemlock, McCluskey and Adams spoke about the economic benefits of international partnerships: Last year in South Florida, we had $80 billion worth of global trading coming out of our airports and seaports. For 15 years running, we've been the only area in the country with a trade surplus because of our exports to Latin America and the Caribbean. Florida's economy is driven by foreign
visitors and buyers. Tourism drives business and in Miami-Dade, about fifty percent of tourists come from overseas. Florida also has the highest share of real estate buyers from overseas than any other state. Both big and small companies involving foreign investors are the fastestgrowing sector of the U.S. economy. International business - we only see it growing and South Florida is a fine example of that…Today, the trend is all about 'going global. Justin Gimelstob and my Brother Ed Bob Diamond HISTORICALLY YOURS I was eagerly looking forward to speaking with former internationally ranked tennis star Justin Gimelstob, a featured panelist at a recent Aventura Marketing Council luncheon. In my childhood, we were nearby neighbors with the Gimelstob family in the Weequahic area of Newark. I wanted to speak with Justin about his grandfather Ruby, better known as “Gabby.” On Sunday mornings during the spring, our neighborhood kids all watched the men play baseball on the Chancellor Avenue Field. Our sports hero - the star baseball player was Gabby - a former professional baseball player. Justin’s grandfather played centerfield like Joe DiMaggio, hit like Babe Ruth and was always nice to us. As I related some wonderful memories about Gabby, Justin told me that he, unfortunately, had no memories of his grandfather as he was only one year old when his grandfather died. I wished him luck and
extended my best wishes to his family. A week later, I received a phone call from Justin’s father, Barry. “Justin,” he said, “would not be here if it was not for your brother Ed.” Barry said that he and his wife had given up hope of her becoming pregnant, having been unsuccessful at numerous infertility medical centers. One day, Barry and his wife were driving through Irvington, N.J. when they saw a sign on a building, “Diamond Institute for Infertility.” My older brother Ed had become a renowned physician, specializing in infertility. Barry approached the receptionist while some 200 people were sitting in the reception area. “I want to see Dr. Diamond,” Barry said. The receptionist advised that the first appointment was in six months. Barry protested, “But Dr. Diamond was my neighbor. I want to see him now.” As they spoke, Ed came out of his office, recognized Barry, took them into his office and offered to help. Thereafter, Justin was conceived. A grateful Barry called Ed shortly thereafter advising that he never received a bill. Ed said, “No bill for the Gimelstob family.” Ed died this past year. A recent email to me from Justin states, “I hope my being here honors your brother.”

Adrienne Arsht Center brings the magic of the performing arts to 26,000 local 5th graders During a two-week span in late April and early May, the Adrienne Arsht Center's audience skewed noticeably younger as 26,000 Miami fifth graders packed the John S. and James L. Knight Concert Hall for Rock Odyssey, an original musical production of Homer's Odyssey. The program was provided to Miami-Dade County students and their schools free of charge, part of a pilot program created by the Center to give young people the opportunity to experience live theater in a premier performing arts center. Rock Odyssey, the first installment of this “Learning Through the Arts” initiative, was made possible with support from MiamiDade County and the Funding Arts Network. Program creators, including Emmy-nominated entertainment pioneer Douglas Love, developed an in-classroom curriculum around Rock Odyssey for use before and after the show. The lessons satisfied state educational standards, making Rock Odyssey the firstever partnership between a performing arts center and a school system aimed at providing

Hochberg Preparatory presents concert by musical talent Ethan Bortnick Hochberg Preparatory will host a benefit concert headlined by world renowned musical talent and child prodigy Ethan Bortnick on Wednesday, May 26th. The concert, which will begin at 6:30 p.m., will take place at Beth Torah Benny Rok Campus located at 20350 NE 26th Avenue in North Miami Beach. The full-length concert will feature a variety of musical selections for the whole family, including everything from Mozart to rock and roll. The concert will be followed by a questionand-answer session during which time Bortnick will take questions from the audience, as well as talk about his incredible experiences in the business. Bortnick, at only nine years old, is an accomplished pianist, musician, composer, actor and artist. He is widely considered to be one of the youngest philanthropists in the world. Bortnick began playing the keyboard at the age of three and was composing music by the age of five. He made his national television debut on The
Tonight Show with Jay Leno in 2007. He has since appeared on many national and international television programs and has performed with a long list of well-known artists including Beyonce, Patti Labelle and Sir Elton John. Earlier this year, Bortnick became the youngest artist to record “We Are The World - 25 For Haiti,” with 70+ other artists. Later this year, he will become the youngest entertainer to headline his own tour. Bortnick is a passionate philanthropist, especially when it comes to children's causes. He recently helped raise more than $12 million for Miami Children's Hospital. Bortnick is a student at Hochberg Preparatory and volunteered to headline the benefit concert to help raise funds for his school, and to help bring attention to the importance that the arts and music play in the lives of children and young adults. Tickets for the concert are $18. There will be a pre-concert VIP reception with Bortnick and reserved concert seating for $180. For tickets, call 305-933-6946 or http://www.showclix.com/event/9557

Arsht Center. “Welcoming 26,000 fifthgraders to experience live theater in our facility speaks to our commitment to present world-class performing arts and community-
driven programming. We are thrilled to launch this historic program in partnership with Miami-Dade County, whose generous support has made it possible to continue our quest to educate, engage, and entertain the next generation of Miami audiences.” The Adrienne Arsht Center hopes to expand the “Learning Through the Arts” initiative over the next five years, with the goal of reaching 75,000 fifth, seventh, and ninth graders. Mr. Richard is hopeful that the success of Rock Odyssey will incite the private sector to increase its funding for arts education. “Cementing Miami's standing as a national leader in arts education through the expansion of programs like Rock Odyssey will require corporations, philanthropic individuals and grant-making institutions to match the public sector's support. We have a unique opportunity to make an impact on the hearts and minds of our community's youngest members.” For more information, go online and visit arshtcenter.org

Why hire an arborist to care for your trees? An arborist is a specialist in the care of individual trees. Right Tree – Right Place Arborists are knowledgeable about the needs of trees and are trained and equipped to provide proper care. Well-cared-for trees are attractive and can add considerable value to your property.
THE ARBORIST
Ser vices That Arborists Can Provide: Pr uning: An arborist can determine the type of pruning necessary to maintain or improve the health, appearance, and safety of trees. Removal: Although tree removal is a last resort, there are circumstances when it is necessary. An arborist can help you decide whether a tree should be removed. Emergency Tree Care: Storms may cause limbs or entire trees to fall, often landing on other trees, homes and other structures, or cars. The weight of storm-damaged trees is great, and they can be dangerous to remove or trim. An arborist can assist in performing the job in a safe manner, while reducing further risk of damage to property.
Planting: Arborists plant trees, and most can recommend types of trees that are appropriate for a specific location. The wrong tree in the wrong location could lead to future problems as a result of limited growing space, insects, diseases, or poor growth. Plant Health Car e: An Arborist keeps trees in good health by helping the tree to better defend itself against insects, disease, and site problems. How do I know if this guy wi th a chainsaw is an Arborist? Many people who love trees become ISA members for a small annual fee. Some unscrupulous tree trimmers pretend that this simple membership is the same thing as being a “certified arborist.” Every ISA arborist has an individual ID number and ID card that you can check on the ISA website: <www.isa-arbor.com>. Ron von Paulus is an International Society of Arboriculture certified arborist (ID # Fl-5770A). He has more than 20 years experience working with trees in South Florida. He offers free consultations to homeowners and businesses. Please contact him at Big Ron’s Tree Service 305-588-3091 or by email at < ron@BigRonsTreeService.com>

Shifting Sands
Patricia C.Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING There are certain people for whom the truth always shifts. There have no firm grip on the truth or on reality. They do not see things the way they are. Nor, do they remember things the way they happened. It is not that they lie. They just do not see reality as the true reality. They are usually vehement in their denials of the truth. They may even become nasty about it. They insist that their version is the correct and only version. You simply cannot tell them anything that portrays a different truth then the one they have in their minds. If it is not an aspect of Dementia, it could be an emotional memory which is more about the feelings or fears of the individual than the truth. It could also be a personality disorder. Some people adjust the truth to suit their needs. They may change
the truth from one moment to the next, even in the middle of a discussion. A person with a negative view of people and life will not accept anything that challenges that view. They will not remember it or believe what you tell them. It is very difficult to have a relationship and even a conversation with these individuals, because they alter the truth. Conversing with them feels as if you are standing on sand that shifts beneath your feet. If you have ever tried to stand on the sand at the edge of the ocean you are familiar with this feeling. How can you handle the shifting sands? You have to maintain your own authentic state of mind. The truth is the truth. It is a fact. It is accurate, honest and reliable. You have to maintain your own inner balance. If it is dementia, it may be best to let it go. If it is a personality disorder it is best to terminate the relationship gently if you can. In either case it will take patience and practice to cope with shifting sands. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. She can be reached at 305-788-4864, 212-308-0309.

VIEWPOINT What’s so Great About Freedom from Health Care? BY DONALD KAUL
Trying to figure out the tea party movement puts one in the position of the blind man trying to understand the shape of an elephant by touch. He puts his hand on its tail and he thinks it's like a snake. He feels the leg and it's a tree. The ear seems like a blanket to him. So too, the tea party is made up of a lot of disparate elements--anti-abortion, antitaxes, anti-immigration, anti-health-care expansion, anti-government in general. If it weren't for guns, they wouldn't be pro anything. Basically, however, it's their feeling about government that binds them together. Someone once told them that the government that governs least governs best and they believed it. They remind me of Huck Finn's father. He reappears early in "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn," fresh out of jail and drunk. He virtually kidnaps his son, who has been adopted by the Widow Douglas, and takes Huck to his shack out in the woods, where he bemoans his lot. "Call this a govment! Why, just look at it and see what it's like. Here's the law astanding ready to take a man's son away from him--a man's own son, which he has had all the trouble and all the anxiety and all the expense of raising. "Yes, just as that man has got that son raised at last, and ready to go to work and begin to do suthin' for him and give him a rest, the law up and goes for him. And they call that govment! "A man can't get his rights in a govment like this. Sometimes I've a mighty notion to just leave the country for good and all…Says I, for two cents I'd leave the blamed country and never come a-near it again. Them's the very words." And, coincidentally, them's the very words of tea party fellow traveler Rush Limbaugh, aren't they? Didn't he say that if the health-care bill passed he'd leave the country? (Though if the object were to get away from national health insurance I don't know where he'd go. Somalia, maybe.)
Americans love to talk about how much they distrust government, always have. All of our great philosophers--Jefferson, Emerson, Thoreau, Reagan---have sung that tune. But Americans still cash their Social Security checks, demand their unemployment benefits, and are happy when someone answers their 911 call. It's the other guy's government benefits that bother them. The level of hostility engendered by the health-care bill is a little puzzling, however. None of the arguments against it hold water. They say that we can't afford it. How can that be? Every other industrialized country on Earth has some form of national health insurance. How can they all afford it and we can't? They say that it constitutes a government takeover of health care. It doesn't. I wish it did. It filters care through a system of insurance companies, and each of them takes its cut. They say it will lead to rationing and long lines. Only if we don't cut costs by eliminating tests and treatments that are unnecessary or don't work. Republicans don't seem willing to do that. Besides, you think we don't have rationing and long lines right now? They say we already have the best health-care system in the world and shouldn't mess with it. Nonsense. We may have the best care, but a system that leaves 15 percent of the people uninsured is far from the best. They say the health-care bill is unconstitutional. Oh, come on. Do you really think that when Washington, Franklin and the rest of that crowd were discussing the Bill of Rights, they said: "We have to make sure that the people are assured freedom from health care?" On the other hand, given recent Supreme Court decisions, constitutional isn't what it used to be. My own feeling is that anything that makes Rush Limbaugh want to leave the country can't be all bad. --

Warning: Shopping May Prove Deadly to Miners BY MARK NOWAK
Anderson Cooper is talking to coal-mining families and politicians in West Virginia again. Ever since that explosion ripped through an underground mine in Montcoal, it seems people all across America are discussing the dangers of mining. If you watched the news during the recent disaster, you may have heard television anchors and reporters speaking about an "exceptional" tragedy, a once-in-40-years catastrophe that took the lives of 29 coal miners in southern West Virginia. Yet if we look at this tragedy from a global perspective, the tragedy in Montcoal looks, unfortunately, all too typical. Since the Sago, West Virginia disaster over three years ago, I've been tracking deaths in the global mining sector on my blog, Coal Mountain. Rarely does a day go by when I don't have to add more names and stories to this death roll. Mine collapse kills 16 in northwest Tanzania. Six bodies found in Xinjiang mine collapse. Worker dies in Australian nickel mine. And these are just a few of the headlines from the days since the Montcoal disaster. What happened earlier this month happens almost every day somewhere in the world: Miners are killed at work. And why do they die--or for whom? Miners from Utah to sub-Saharan Africa to China's Shanxi province die, in part, for us. As consumers who walk the aisles at WalMarts, dollar stores, and suburban shopping malls, we fuel the extraction of coal and other minerals every time we purchase items that are intimately connected to miners around the world. Every time you purchase something
made in China, your item more than likely was made not only in a factory with its own horrific labor conditions, but a factory powered by electricity produced from coal. And each year in China, several thousand miners are killed as they extract that "black gold" from deep inside the earth. Similar stories can be told about objects in almost every room in your house. To extract precious minerals like diamonds and gold in South Africa, for example, miners risk their lives every day--including 76 miners whose bodies were found in an abandoned Harmony Goldmining Co. mineshaft in Free State last year. And tin? From the precarious and brief lives of Indonesian "tin divers," to the five child miners killed in a collapse in southeast Congo earlier this year, tin extraction is likewise written in blood. One of the many lessons we must learn from the 29 miners who lost their lives in Montcoal, West Virginia is that our patterns of energy use, as well as how we shop, are intimately tied to those who risk their lives each and every day deep beneath the Earth's surface. As we begin to discuss the changing economy and our spending habits in the postboom period, it's also time to think more about where the products that clutter our bedrooms and basements and boardrooms come from. And who is risking and losing their lives so that we can have them. --

Initiative aimed at getting Floridians back to work Al Sunshine 4 YOUR MONEY There’s a new initiative called the “Florida Back to Work” program and it is aimed at getting people back to work. It was approved by Congress several months ago and for the first time millions of dollars in Federal Job Grants are starting to hit the streets of South Florida. It also could offer critically needed incentives to small businesses here and around the state to start hiring again. I spoke to one Kendall resident who wants to get back to work. The financial services expert was laid off from his job last year when his bank was taken over by another company. His job was eliminated and he has been forced to pay his bills with a series of part-time jobs. “It’s kind of hard being a college graduate and professional taking part time jobs that I’m overqualified for,” he told me. “But I’ve taken whatever I could find, almost anything to pay the bills.” Thanks to the new $200 million program, Florida just started distributing job grants for companies to start hiring new workers. Florida’s money comes from a much bigger “back to work” federal job program that’s aimed at funding about 25,000 new fulltime jobs through at least the end of September, jobs paying about $12 an hour. South Florida’s share comes out to
about $86 million to fund about 5,000 new positions. “Their moneys are being sent down from Washington through Tallahassee,” said Cheri Kavehershi, a job specialist with Miami’s South Florida Workforce. “They allow local businesses to seek job funds and hire local workers who’ve enrolled with us, and they should help a great deal to lower the latest unemployment rate.” Employers already are starting to apply for the new grants, but they have to hire qualified workers through the state’s job banks after they’ve formally registered for the state’s back to work programs. That Kendall resident I mentioned earlier hopes the new back to work grants will finally help him get a new fulltime job. “I think it’s a great idea and I’ll be grateful for any opportunity I can get.” State employment specialists say it looks like the plan could help turn around the local job market and it could be a key step to getting companies hiring again. The funding runs through the end of September and by then, state and federal officials hope local companies will be in a much better position to keep their new hires on the job, rather than triggering a new round of layoffs as the U.S. economy is expected to start seeing more solid signs of improvement. For more Information, go online to <www.employflorida.com/>. Watch Al Sunshine’s “4 Your Money” reports Monday-Friday beginning at noon. You may find Al’s blog at <www.cbs4.com/4yourmoney>.

Naples Beach Hotel completes $5 million pool complex BY KAREN LAMONICA
The Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club recently completed its all-new $5 million beachfront pool complex. The larger beachfront pool complex features two new swimming pools — a freeform pool for families and a secluded ovalshaped pool for adults. The area also has two new whirlpools, a new pool bar with food service, new restrooms, new locker facilities and a new pool shop. Picturesque tall palms encircle the pool area and there is easy access for guests to walk right onto the beach. This new pool complex follows the completion of the 319-room resort’s multi-million dollar renovation and remodeling of its guest rooms and suites in January. The dramatically renovated guest rooms and suites have remodeled bathrooms, new carpet and new sliding glass doors. The bathrooms are larger and have new walk-in, glassenclosed showers with sea-blue tile, as well as new double sinks, spacious new vanities, new tile floors and fixtures, and vanity mirrors. In addition, another vanity outside of the bathroom — complete with a sink, large
mirror, vanity mirror and towels — has been added so that another person can get ready while the bathroom is in use. This was the second and final phase of the multi-million dollar guest room remodeling project, which also included new bedding and fabrics, flat-panel televisions, rich new furnishings and accents in calming tropical shades. Owned and operated by the Watkins family for more than 60 years, the resort offers a beachfront location in the heart of scenic old Naples. Offerings at the 125acre resort include 1,000 feet of white-sand beach on the Gulf of Mexico; an on-site par 72 championship golf course; a worldclass spa; complete fitness center; the Mary C. Watkins Tennis Center with six Har-Tru courts; Beach Klub 4 Kids, a recreational program for children ages five to 12; an Orchid House, home to over 3,000 tropical plants; multiple restaurants and lounges; 34,000 square feet of meeting space; and beautiful outdoor venues. The Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club is located at 851 Gulf Shore Blvd. North. For more information, call 800-237-7600 or go to <www.NaplesBeachHotel.com>.

I have often heard it said that kids should come with an instruction manual. Maybe so. Dr. Spock wrote one but I am not sure people use it anymore. I found the secret to raising wonderful kids. Marry a woman who knows how to do it. I did and it worked out just fine. Now grandkids are a different story. This is where my expertise comes in. My wife always is upset that when our grandkids come to our house, the first thing they ask is “where’s Papa?” Not that grandma isn’t great with them — buys them clothes, takes them shopping and all that good stuff — but Papa is, in their eyes a huge toy that doesn’t require “AA” batteries to work, although there are times that I feel like I need some. When they first step through our door they ask for candy. This is just a formality because they know exactly where it is hidden and end up helping themselves anyway. When they come for a sleepover we allow them to stay up until midnight — a real treat. The only requirement is that they watch our digital clock change numbers until it reaches midnight. They usually last about 10 minutes until they fall asleep, but in their minds they beat the system. Feeding them is a lot of fun. They just don’t eat anything worth while. When they sleep over, they insist on grandma making breakfast waffles for them — not to eat, but so they can watch her struggle with the waffle maker and all those mixes. One time we gave them some of those frozen Eggos from the supermarket. They loved them and actually ate some. Going to restaurants is also an adventure. We let them choose and of course their first

choice is always Cracker Barrel. Not for the food, which they don’t eat anyway, but in case you didn’t know it, they sell toys there. Papa can’t say no. Playing with their “big toy” is the best part. They love to play rough house which involves jumping on my back and using me as an imaginary surfboard. I pay the price the next day but it is worth it. Of course my time with them is limited, not because I will eventually go to that big tennis court in the sky but because they are getting too old for some of Papa’s nonsense. My 4-year-old granddaughters no longer believe that there are monsters in my garage, even after I hid a Walkie Talkie there and made monster sounds. When I visit them at school they always ask how I got there and my stock answer is that I flew in on my Pterodactyl. Recently both of them told me that Pterodactyls are extinct (Their words). Not to be outdone, I immediately went to my computer and created a photo of me with my pet Pterodactyl. One of the smart—s kids said Papa must have done that with Photoshop on his computer. Damn those kids. Their conversations keep getting more and more involved. I found myself discussing evolution versus creationism with my 6year-old grandson. I spend more time on Google trying to answer their questions than I do anything else. Now the good part of being a grandparent — it is like leasing a car. You eventually get to return it. Same with the grandkids; once they have had their fill of sugar and are raring to go, just hand them back to their parents and leave quickly.

Jane Fonda hosts ‘World Fitness Day’ Celebrity trainers celebrate health and working out
BY BARI AUERBACH
On May 1, actress and fitness icon Jane Fonda teamed up with celebrity trainers including Richard Simmons, Denise Austin and Billy Banks to host the first annual “World Fitness Day.” The event, drawing thousands to the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, is designed to promote health and fitness and a lifelong commitment to staying active. Renowned for her best-selling workout videos, Fonda is now 72 – but despite hip and knee replacement surgeries, her passion for health and fitness is stronger than ever. “Not only will [World Health Day] be a tremendous amount of fun and a spectacular celebration of good health, it is an amazing opportunity for Atlanta, Georgia, and the nation to strengthen the mind, body and spirit of our young people,” Fonda said. “I’m part of a demographic that’s kind of ignored. We have to go into it with guns blazing and be as healthy as possible… Every aspect of your life will be better as you get older if you remain physically active.” Legendary fitness guru Richard Simmons added, “You cannot have a healthy life without exercise for your children, teenagers and seniors. This is a day where
we embrace exercise and say, ‘Please do it - you’ll live longer, feel better and think more positive.” Denise Austin emphasized, “Come on - you’re worth it - you deserve to look and feel your best!!” Beyond interactive workouts, World Fitness Day festivities also included performances by rapper and actor Chris “Ludacris” Bridges and The Pointer Sisters – plus California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger presented a video greeting. This year’s “World Health Day” benefitted The Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention - a nonprofit organization founded by Fonda in 1995 to “work with community leaders, residents, youth and caring networks within each community to create sustainable programs and a positive environment that will reduce the rate of adolescent pregnancy and increase opportunities for young people and their parents. Summing up the benefits of exercise, Fonda exclaimed “Just Do It!” and also expressed sentiments shared by many people of all ages around the world: “I don’t really like working out - but I’m motivated to do it because of how I feel afterwards.” For more information about Jane Fonda’s fitness initiatives and products, visit www.janefonda.com

Running in general election different than primary R. Kenneth Bluh KENNETH’S COMMENTARY I really don’t think the U.S. Senate race in Florida is an “anyone can win” threeway race. Everything “was” nice and cozy for both Kendrick Meek and Marco Rubio as long as Charlie Crist stayed in the Republican Party. Rubio had the upper hand and short of some disastrous revelation would have coasted into the November elections. Independents were up for grabs. True, Rubio has the American Express debacle potentially hanging over his head. But I don’t think it will have much of an impact. Contributors to the Republican Party of Florida are more interested in having their man elected to office than they are about a ruckus over improper spending of political contributions. Meek currently has total control over the Democratic primary. He has a few opponents but they are underfunded and have the same problem as Meek, but to a far less
–– COMMENTARY –– extent. They basically are unknown north of Palm Beach County. The entry of Jeff Greene, a billionaire from Palm Beach County into the Democratic race can cause a primary race problem for Meek inasmuch as Greene plans on dumping millions of his own dollars into the race. Not being beholden to any power structure or lobbying groups will appeal to a number of voters. Gov. Crist’s long anticipated move out of the Republican Party, becoming an Independent, or as he calls it a “NPA” No Party Affiliation, is creating financial problems for Crist as many of the dollars he has in his campaign war chest will be going back to contributors angered by his move. Crist’s move will take votes away from Meek as a number of registered Democrats are concerned that Meek will not fair well in North Florida. In the general election, they may turn to Crist, who is more of a Democrat than many elected Democrats
sitting in Washington, DC. For the life of me I can’t understand the Republican position on the stimulus package embraced by Crist a year ago when President Obama visited our state and received a warm welcome from the the governor. It is a good political move by Rubio, but in my opinion rings hollow because the Republican-controlled Legislature in Tallahassee not only embraced Obama’s stimulus money, but proudly used it to balance the state’s budget. Simply said, without the stimulus dollars some $800 billion in all, we would be seeing many more cuts in services in next year’s budget. There just isn’t enough revenue to cover all of Florida’s needs. Without Obama’s stimulus dollars, the Republican Party would have had a tough time explaining even deeper cuts in services without any increases in taxes. It would appear that if Crist can quickly reassemble a statewide team of supporters
and can cover the dollars he will loose to the far right Republicans then he should be our next senator from Florida. Crist doesn’t have to face the difficult task of moving his campaign to the middle of the political spectrum come the general elections. Republicans must appear to be to the right of the Tea Party to win their primary. Democrats must be to the left of the old Labor Party to win their primary. Once the primary races are settled, the winning candidates must pull to the middle of the political road to win the general election. Crist is lucky. He already is there. The winner of many national awards, this uproarious play about life, death, power, and first boyfriends was adapted by the author from her popular book, "Goodbye, Best Friend". Hollywood-wannabe Star, the ultimate Beatles fan, has her path stymied by cystic fibrosis, an inherited disease that assures a young death. She spends most of her time in the hospital, where she confronts fate with imagination by surrounding herself with MTV-inspired bodyguard flunkies and 'morphing' her dreaded therapy nurse into a pro-wrestler. Then Star gets a new roommate, Courtney, who is Star's opposite-a pretty cheerleader and apparently not very sick. Travel Tips - Give a getaway BY DAVID GEDANSKY Late spring and early summer seem to be filled with a never-ending series of giftgiving events: Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, graduations and weddings. The perfect gift for all of these occasions and more is, of course, travel. It’s always appropriate, always welcome, and always fits just right. Airlines, hotels and travel agents make it very easy to give the gift of travel. You can give a gift of virtually any value. You can make it specific (for example, a pre-selected flight to a specific destination), or more general (for example, a gift certificate for the flight of the recipient’s choice). Your gift of travel doesn’t have to be as extravagant as full payment for a flight. If the recipient loves to travel, he or she will appreciate a gift certificate they can apply toward the cost of a flight or hotel stay. If you know the recipient’s tastes, consider giving a certificate for a spa treatment at their favorite resort or for dinner in their favorite city. Your travel professional can provide more suggestions for travel gifts that fit any budget. If you’re worried that a gift of travel
might seem a little impersonal, there are ways to put a personal touch on your gift. Give something the recipient will use again and again while traveling – for example, a high-quality travel bag, a travel clock, a digital camera, even a satin eye mask – and they’ll think of you each time they use it. Or, put yourself in the travel picture. For example, for Mother’s Day or Father’s Day, give your parent the gift of a trip you’ll take together. Traveling to a place that’s special to your mom or dad – the place they grew up or the site of a favorite childhood vacation – can be especially meaningful and memorable. Or create new memories by planning travel to a destination your recipients have always dreamed about visiting. Another idea is to give the gift of travel for a parent, friend or graduate to come and visit you. If you live some distance away, perhaps the best gift they could receive is some airline, train or bus tickets that will enable them to spend time with you. To explore all your options for giving the gift of travel, talk with your travel professional or contact david@traveleaders.com, 305-935-5560, or visit our website www.travelleaders.com/experts.

Acura adds V-6 power to popular TSX sport sedan Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS The 2010 Acura TSX sport sedan has been given a hot new 3.5-liter V-6 engine for 2010 and it really is something special. Most auto enthusiasts who drove the earlier TSX with the 2.4-liter DOHC I-4 engine raved about the car’s performance. But, you ain’t seen nothing ’til you drive the newest version with the V-6. The new SOHC V-6 develops 280 hp and 254 pounds-feet of torque, has a very high compression ratio, VTEC valvetrain control and a dual-stage induction system through a lightweight magnesium intake manifold. It all adds up to rocket-like acceleration and pretty good gas mileage at 18/27 mpg. The V-6 is mated to a sophisticated Sequential SportShift five-speed automatic transmission that allows for a fully automatic operation with intelligent features such as Grade Logic Control and Shift
Hold Control, which make driving on a winding road an enjoyable experience. The transmission also may be operated manually with the steering wheel- mounted paddle shifters. The second generation TSX is larger, has a wider stance, is more agile and handles even better that its predecessor. It also has special suspension tuning, larger diameter wheels and tires (18x8-inch aluminum wheels with a split five-spoke design mounted with performance Michelin Pilot HX MXM4 P235/45R18 all-season tires) and brake system upgrades, as well as more comfort, convenience and safety features with expanded luxury and electronic equipment. Acura will continue to offer the TSX powered by a 201 hp DOHC inline fourcylinder engine (20/28). All 2010 TSX models have a state-ofthe-art double wishbone front and multilink rear suspension system for an excellent ride, handling and control. The new V-6 model’s independent front suspension has firmer springs and revised calibration for the dual-mode suspension dampers. As for styling, the new Acura TSX continues with the crisp, dynamic design of the original, though widened overall and with more muscular styling cues. All TSX mod-

els ride on a chassis that includes a closedchannel cross-braced roof structure and inside frame rails. Along with a stronger rear bulkhead, the closed-channel crossbraced roof structure yields a more rigid and vibration-resistant body. On the inside, the interior is a blend of sweeping, contemporary shapes, with a high level of comfort and convenience features. There’s a much easier-to-read navigation screen (when equipped with the Technology Package) and an improved look of telephone number text displayed on the Multi Information Display. The TSX V-
6 has a one-touch ignition key starter system and an updated tachometer face with a unique rpm redline range that corresponds to the new V-6 engine. Pricing on the 2010 Acura TSX ranges from $29,310 for the base I-4 to $37,950 for the V-6 model with the Technology Package. Ron Beasley is the automotive editor for Miami’s Community Newspapers. Mount Sinai Medical Center grants Executive Director of American Board of Plastic Surgery a ‘Stroke’ of Luck BY JOANNA PALMER
R. Barrett Noone, M.D., F.A.C.S. is a lucky man. The board certified plastic surgeon and executive director of the American Board of Plastic Surgery was on Fisher Island in February for a medical conference when he suffered a stroke. “I was speaking at the conference when my speech became slurred,” he recalled. “When I heard myself speaking, I thought something was wrong.” His colleagues – a room full of doctors – noticed his impaired speech and weakness in his face and immediately called R. Barrett Noone, MD, FACS 911. Noone was ––––––––––– rushed to Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach where once again, his luck would serve him well. That is because Mount Sinai is one of only three hospitals in Miami-Dade

by Alex M. Barrocas, M.D., the hospital’s director of interventional radiology and endovascular neurosurgery. Barrocas ordered a series of diagnostic tests including CT scan, CT angiography and CT perfusion, a technique brought to Mount Sinai by Barrocas from Harvard Medical School. Then, Noone was given TPA, a drug that helps break up the clot. Next, surgeons examined Noone’s brain with MRI and MRI perfusion. The MRI perfusion, a Mount Sinai innovation, allows surgeons to look deeper into the brain to see what areas are at risk of dying from oxygen deprivation. With test result, neurosurgeons had an arsenal of data to help determine the best type of treatment for Noone. In addition to the traditional ways of treating stroke, Mount Sinai offers minimally invasive brain surgery, for which Noone was the perfect candidate. After performing an angiogram, an imaging test that uses X-rays to view detailed images of the blood flow, Barrocas discovered that one of Noone’s arteries was partially blocked. Barrocas performed a minimally invasive procedure offered only by a handful of hospitals in the country by inserting a smaller catheter inside a larger catheter to reach the clot. Once there, he injected TPA directly into the clot. The drug successfully dissolved what was left of the blockage in a matter of minutes. This technique, which requires extreme precision, was especially useful in Noone’s case because the clot was located inside a very small artery, only about three millimeters in size.
Barrocas, who has been performing the procedure since 2005, boasts a 100 percent success rate said the procedure has other brain and life-saving applications. However, he warned that the surgery is not without risks, which can include bleeding, stroke and allergic reaction. For this reason, he stressed how important it is that the surgeon performing the procedure is specifically trained in endovascular neurosurgery and interventional neuroradiology. For Noone, having this procedure was vitally important. His clot was in the middle of a major artery on the right side of the brain, meaning the effects – weakness and paralysis – were on the left side of the body. “The procedure gave us the ability to save the right side of his brain so he can operate again,” said Barrocas. “To a surgeon, that means the world. He was lucky the stroke happened while he was talking to an auditorium full of doctors.” Noone, who spent six days in the hospital, said the only side effect he felt was fatigue. “Neurologically, all the paralysis was gone, and I’m completely normal,” he said. Today, Noone is back at work as a plastic surgeon, taking blood thinners and other heart medications. He sees a cardiologist back home in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. There is no need for him to follow up with a neurologist. “I am very fortunate and grateful to have been treated so well and efficiently at Mount Sinai,” said Noone. “Without Dr. Barrocas’ skilled hands, I would not be enjoying the outstanding level of function I have at the present time. I have recovered fully, carry a complete operating schedule and continue my academic work.”

Gerda Weissmann Klein Author, Academy Award Winner, Holocaust Survivor and Human Rights Activist BY LEE STEPHENS
For over five decades, author, historian, and speaker Gerda Weissmann Klein has captivated audiences worldwide with her powerful message of hope, inspiration, love and humanity. In her speeches and books, Klein draws from her wealth of life experiences: from surviving the Holocaust and meeting her future husband on the day of her liberation, to her journey to the United States, accepting an Oscar and Emmy for a documentary based on her life, and her constant fight to promote tolerance, encourage community service and combat hunger. Klein’s account of her experiences during the Holocaust is documented in her classic autobiography, All But My Life, which has been in print for 52 years, published in 62 editions and used in high schools and colleges around the world. It was the foundation for the Oscar and Emmy-winning HBO documentary One Survivor Remembers. This documentary is the cornerstone of a unique education curriculum, Teaching Tolerance, developed in partnership between the Gerda and Kurt Klein Foundation and Southern Poverty Law Center which has been used in over 104,000 schools, reaching over 10 million students. Klein, who has appeared on numerous TV shows, including Oprah, 60 Minutes and CBS Sunday Morning, has spoken to school children and community members in all 50 of the United States and the District of Columbia. She has met with world leaders, including Golda Meir and Menachem Begin, as well as those here at home, including Eleanor Roosevelt and U.S. Presidents from Harry Truman to Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. In recognition of her international reputation and her inspiring message, Gerda was the keynote speaker at the United Nation’s First Annual Official Observance of the Holocaust in January 2006.
In 2004, Klein released A Boring Evening at Home. The book offers glimpses into her life, and into the thoughts that have always vindicated her belief that the most treasured place on earth is home, and that the most beautiful and desirable aim for people is to spend “a boring evening” there with family. The book is dedicated to her late husband to whom she was married for 56 years. The Kleins’ story is portrayed in the film Testimony, a permanent exhibit at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington. In 1997, President Clinton appointed Klein to the Holocaust Museum’s governing council. Gerda Klein has authored eight books on a wide variety of topics for an array of different audiences. These include The Blue Rose, a story about a mentally-disabled child. The book subsequently became a film in India. Her work, Promise of a New Spring, is devoted to teaching young children about the Holocaust, while A Passion for Sharing is a biography of New
Orleans philanthropist Edith Rosenwald Stern, which garnered its author the Valley Forge Freedom Award. In 1996, Klein was one of five women to receive the prestigious international Lion of Judah award in Jerusalem. More recently, she has been featured on the cover of the McDougal-Littell high school textbook, The Americans, alongside such other notable figures as Franklin D. Roosevelt, Martin Luther King Jr., Ronald Reagan, and Gen. Norman Schwartzkopf. Klein’s constant striving for the preservation of human rights and dignity has earned her seven Doctorates of Humane Letters, along with countless other awards. In 1998 along with her husband, Klein founded the Gerda and Kurt Klein Foundation (www.kleinfoundation.org). Dedicated to easing human suffering wherever it may be, Gerda Klein has worked tirelessly with her foundation to fight hunger, violence and prejudice, and to promote tolerance as well as encourage and teach young people to engage in communi-
ty service and social action. Gerda Klein’s accomplishments and contributions are vast and broad. Her latest endeavor is serving as the Founder of Citizenship Counts, a nonprofit organization that provides a civics education curriculum to middle and high school students that culminates with children planning and hosting an actual naturalization ceremony in their schools. Retired Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, who sits on the organization’s National Advisory Board, officiated at the March 23, 2009 naturalization ceremony for the pilot program in which 100 students from Phoenix and Scottsdale participated. Klein’s passion for the mission of Citizenship Counts and love for her adopted country are best expressed in her own words: “America is a unique, diverse and wondrous country, comprised both of those who know its magnificence as their birthright and others, like me, who are privileged to call our adopted country ‘our own.’ What we all share is a desire for our families to enjoy America’s boundless opportunities while extending to all our fellow citizens justice and the blessings and freedoms upon which the nation was founded. To perpetuate the miracle that is America we must teach our children about its rich history as a nation of immigrants who chose this country and have given meaning to its ideals. Citizenship Counts will engage today’s students in civics education, combined with active participation in a naturalization ceremony, to help ensure that the citizens of tomorrow will continue to foster tolerance understanding, service to one another and a greater appreciation for the privilege and responsibility of citizenship.” Gerda Klein lives in Scottsdale, AZ and has three children, eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.

BY DR. MARK A. JAMISON AND DR. JANICE HAUGE* Dumb is better? That is what net neutrality advocates would have us believe. Their basic belief is that broadband networks should be pipes that indifferently pass information packets from one location to another, allowing content providers and customers equal opportunity to do whatever they want. Who could be against that? People interested in innovation and customer welfare. Remember Al Gore calling the Internet the Information Super Highway? The metaphor wasn’t and isn’t perfect, but it is instructive. Suppose we applied net neutrality to our transportation system – there would be no high occupancy vehicle lanes during rush hour, no car only lanes on interstates, and no toll road as an alternative to I-95 in South Florida. Transportation would be more costly and provide less value. Forcing net neutrality would have similar results. Time sensitive information, such as stock market transactions, would wait in line behind football game highlights. Financial dealings that would benefit from extra security would be given no better treatment than a Twitter from Taylor Swift’s E! interview. If you are thinking that it sounds like net neutrality restricts innovation and hurts customers, you’re right. Our research has shown that net neutrality limits innovation, contrary to the claims of the net neutrality proponents. How can this be? Imagine a one dimensional network – one that does noth-
ing but carry information from point to point, which is how the old Internet has worked. What kinds of content providers flourish in that context? Those big enough to distribute their software across the net and those whose software takes advantage of the great bandwidth that they don’t have to pay for. Now suppose that the network can offer enhancements that improve customers’ experiences. Content providers whose sites would not benefit from such enhancements could ignore the offering. But there will be some content providers who could improve their services by buying the enhancements, such as priority packet delivery. These sites become better without net neutrality and offer customers more service. In other words, there is more innovation and greater customer welfare without net neutrality than with it. Today’s successful Internet sites face great competition if we move beyond net neutrality principles. That probably explains why they are net neutrality’s strongest advocates. But moving beyond a dumb network is better for customers, sites that find new opportunities and networks. It should be no surprise that dumb isn’t better. In an innovation driven economy, restrictions don’t make us better. They hold us back. * The authors are Dr. Mark A. Jamison, Director, Public Utility Research Center, University of Florida and Dr. Janice Hauge, Associate Professor, Department of Economics, University of North Texas.
