Billy and Sandra Joel recently made the brave move to cut her long curly locks so that less fortunate youngsters could enjoy her beautiful hair as their own. It all started a year ago when Andie decided she wanted to grow out her hair so she could donate it to Wigs for Kids, an organization that gives hair- Andie Mannis prepares for an unforgettable haircut pieces to children ages 18 and younger who suffer from illnesses or accidents that lead to hair loss. Aventura Hospital appoints Melanie Vymlatil as director of Step Down Services
Bnai Zion Foundation: Assisting those in need for over a century BY JEREIMA FERRER Good works always reach the consciousness of the masses and that is just what the philanthropy of the Bnai Zion Foundation has done. Throughout its 101 years of humanitarian work, this organization has been dedicated to helping those in need through its various projects in Israel. The Bnai Zion Foundation is currently working on five projects including its cornerstone project, The Bnai Zion Medical Center in Haifa where the neonatal unit receives 5,000 births each year. This hospital has gone through massive renovations thanks to the foundation's financial support. "We select humanitarian projects in Israel that are not being funded by the government but are important to Israeli society," says Bnai Zion Regional Director Eileen Glastein. The Bnai Zion foundation steps in and insures the future of its projects by conducting fundraisers, collecting donations and applying for grants. However, most fundraising is based on face-to-face relationship building, says Glastein. The goal of the foundation is to raise funds to see dreams come true and where else can dreams flourish than in the minds of children. The Bnai Zion Foundation's Ahava Village for Children and Youth program rescues at-risk children, ages six to eighteen, by giving them the support they desperately need. The Ahava Village is located in the town of Kiryat Bialik, where children live in apartments with foster parents who provide a loving environment for them. Other Bnai Zion projects include The Quittman Center at Israel Elwyn in Jerusalem which houses 89 disabled adults and the David

Yellin Academic College of Education which grants a bachelor of education degree and awards a master's degree. The foundation also funds the Bnai Zion Library of Peace in Ma'aleh Adumim, which provides the community with modern technology, books and educational entertainment that the whole family can enjoy. The support that the Bnai Zion Foundation gives these programs is immeasurable. But even still, these programs continue to need contributions for their continual maintenance and expansion. As the need for aid continues so will the impact of this 101 year old foundation. "Bnai Zion's second hundred year plans to be exceedingly visible in the philanthropic community of South Florida," Eileen Glastein said. Aventura Hospital is proud to announce the appointment of Melanie Vymlatil as the new Step Down director. Vymlatil arrives at Aventura Hospital with more than a decade of experience working as a nurse and as a director at Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center. Most recently, she served as a manager of a CV/ICU and was the center's director of emergency services, in which she coordinated care for a 19-bed emergency department, for their Cardiac Institute and for their cardiac receiving facility. Prior to this appointment, Vymlatil worked as an administrative nursing supervisor and as an intensive care and cardiovascular surgical recovery room nurse. She also helped to improve Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center's compliance with Joint Commission (JCAHO) standards of excellence by working with the Nurse Education Department to develop and implement more efficient policies and procedures. VIEWPOINT If corporate media dies, so what?

One thing to keep in mind while worrying about the future of journalism is that its past hasn't been all that great either. Journalism ought to be judged not on the profits it makes for stockholders but on the service it provides to democracy. By that measure, the reporting profession has been falling down on the job: Leading us into an aggressive war with evidence based on lies, overlooking an asset bubble whose predictable deflation devastated our economy, failing to raise alarms about the erosion of key civil liberties. And it's not as though these are just recent failings: Corporate media did much the same poor job covering the Kosovo War, the Gulf War, the Panama invasion and Vietnam. Financial reporters gave little warning about previous bubbles like the tech boom and the savings and loan scandal. For years, corporate media have been railing against any healthcare reform that doesn't preserve the insurance industry and cheerleading for trade policies that have produced a cumulative trade deficit of $6 trillion since 1993. On the issue of climate change, major media outlets long presented the clear scientific consensus that humans are warming the Earth as a controversial question deserving of debate. As for representing the diversity of the United States, corporate media have done a sad job too. When Extra! looked at a year's worth of nightly network news, we found that the sources were 85 percent male, 92 percent white-and among partisan sources, 75 percent Republican. Some 12 percent of Americans live in poverty, but less than 0.2 of nightly network news sources are poor people. To be sure, there have always been journalists doing vital work, both inside and (more frequently) outside the structures of the establishment news outlets. But this is the big picture of the U.S. media system: On the most important issues-questions of war and peace, liberty, social justice, public health and prosperity, and the fate of the planet-it has failed us time and time again. And that's not surprising, because the system is founded on a couple of very bad
ideas: It's a bad idea to have journalism mainly carried out by large corporations whose chief interest in news is how to make the maximum amount of money from it. And it's a bad idea to have as these corporations' main or sole source of revenue advertising from other large corporations, so that the news industry's overwhelming financial incentive is to keep those advertisers happy. To the extent that this system was chosen and not foisted upon us, it was a Faustian bargain: We wouldn't have to worry about paying for the system by which our society informs itself and debates the decisions it faces, because corporate America would be happy to pick up most of the bill-in exchange for the ability to regularly harangue us about the need to purchase their products. Aside from the undesirability of having massive doses of propaganda as a routine part of every day, it should be obvious that giant for-profit companies do not have the same interests as the public at large. And if any sort of entity is able to set aside its own interests when reporting the news, it's not going to be institutions that are required by law to seek the highest level of profit in everything they do. In short, the quality of news we get is about what you'd expect to get from the kind of media structure we have. So if it turns out that these corporations are finding out that reporting news is no longer such a great way to make money, and if advertisers are thinking that maybe they won't be the major source of funding for the nation's journalism anymore, it's hard to see that as a crisis. Every alternative model for sustaining journalism has its pitfalls. But when you consider whether this model or that one would be good for journalism, you have to ask yourself: compared to what? Politicos pocket specialLike a shoplifter's long coat, a politician's suit comes with an astonishing assortment of inside pockets. A report by USA Today reveals that hundreds of lawmakers are eagerly stuffing each one of theirs with special-interest influence money. Take the "foundation pocket." Rep. Joe Barton, a Texas Republican created the Barton Family Foundation, which has become a handy place for corporate interests to stash cash and earn Joe's appreciation. For example, Exelon, a nuclear-powered electric company, generously donated $75,000. Did I mention that Barton is the top Republican on the house energy committee and often does legislative favors for the nuclear industry? Joe can't even pretend that he doesn't know who gives to his foundation, since he personally wrote to Exelon's CEO to solicit the money! Then there's the "institute pocket." In Boston, Democrat Ted Kennedy is setting up an "Institute for the United States Senate," which will be named for - guess who? - himself. Amgen, the giant drug maker, slipped a cool $5 million into this
pocket. Coincidentally, Kennedy chairs the senate health committee and is a key player in the current effort to reform America's health care system. Not that the donation is intended to influence Sen. Kennedy's positions, of course. A corporate spokesperson says that the $5 million merely reflects Amgen's interest in helping "young people become engaged in public service and public policy." There's even a small but influential "portrait pocket" sewn into the suits of such powerful Congress critters as Rep. Jerry Lewis. The California Republican, a pastchairman of the appropriations committee, got ego-stroking money from lobbyists to have an oil painting of himself hung in the committee room. Historically Yours BY BOB DIAMOND “Our Constitution is color-blind” Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor has been questioned by the Senate Committee as to the established belief that “Our Constitution is Colorblind.” Believe it or not, those words originated from the lone dissenting voice of Justice John Marshall Harlan in the 1896 Supreme Court case of Plessy vs. Ferguson, which enshrined racial segregation in Constitutional Law. Homer Plessy, part Negro, boarded a train in Louisiana and was arrested and found guilty for refusal to move from a seat assigned to the white race in violation of the state law that required separate but equal facilities. Plessy’s attorney challenged the Supreme Court justices to “Look at racism in the face, by supposing that tomorrow you wake up with dark skin and curly hair and ordered to sit elsewhere. What humiliation and rage would fill your judicial mind!” According to Supreme Court historian Peter Irons, Justice Henry Brown wrote the opinion for the majority “on thinly veiled
racism, dressed in polite language.” He dismissed the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, which gave equal protection of the laws and barred states from making any laws that abridged the privileges of all citizens. Justice Brown stated that the enforced separation of the races did not violate the 14th Amendment, placing legal reliance upon the police powers of the states to protect the “comfort” of white people who did not want to share the railroad cars with blacks, concluding: “If one race be inferior to the other socially, the Constitution of the United States cannot put them on the same plane.” So much for the Constitution being color-blind. Justice Harlan answered Brown with a devastating rebuttal by originating the oftquoted words, referring to the purpose of the Constitutional Amendments: “Our Constitution is color-blind and neither knows nor tolerates classes among citizens. In respect of civil rights, all citizens are equal before the law.” Harlan concluded, “Justice is pictured blind and her daughter, the Law, ought at least to be color-blind.” According to Irons, the Plessy decision “watered the seeds of Jim Crow laws that sprouted across the country and flourished for another six decades.”

My concern is that my boyfriend lives approximately three hours from me and he says he masturbates and has done this for the past seven years using girlie magazines. Lack of consumer spending means no major turnaround

It was hoped that consumer confidence and spending would improve so much by the end of the second quarter of 2009 that literally we would start “buying” our way out of the recession. However, with consumer confidence stalled and credit still tight, we’re still holding on to our cash. No spending means no major turnaround just yet. Financial planner Lane Jones says, “There is no question that the headwinds are still there, and there’s a lot of uncertainty that still remains. Hence, people still intend to be cautious.” Still, the U.S. economy is showing some signs of improvement. The critical national housing markets are seeing growing sales based on bottom-line pricing and a glut of foreclosures. Though unemployment is worsening —
with predictions the national unemployment rate will peak over 10 percent sometime later this fall — layoffs are slowing down. International tourism and foreign trade still are down from last year, but both are helping to boost South Florida’s economy. Many experts believe that until our overall housing and construction sectors improve, our economic recovery will remain stalled, although it will remain better than the rest of the state. Financial planner Matt McGrath of Coral Gables-based Evensky & Katz, says housing sales have to improve here before we really can see any signs of recovery. He still believes that due to the strength of our local economy, we will be feeling a recovery here before the rest of the state does. During the next few weeks, the latest corporate earnings reports will give us more clues as to where the U.S. economy is heading. LET’S TALK CARS Just about everybody says the Audi A6 sedan is a great car to drive. It’s also comfortable and pleasing to the eye. After a week behind the wheel of the A6, we can only add our vote to the growing list of believers. For 2009, Audi has upgraded and revamped the A6, adding more efficient engines that cut fuel consumption by about 15 percent and improving the suspension by installing a new high-tech assistance system that gives the driver even greater control. The A6 has been a standout for Audi in the luxury sport sedan segment and the new model comes with several new styling accents, including a single-frame grille, bumpers, air vents and fog lights. The available daytime running lights have been redesigned as horizontal strips, each with six xenon LEDs. Other options
include Audi adaptive headlights, a cornering light system, and the high-beam assistant that automatically switches between the high and low beams. An aluminum-colored molding along the sides emphasizes the A6’s contour, while the lip on the trunk, integrated chrome strip on the bumper, broad diffuser and straight exhaust pipes are part of the revamped rear end. The interior of the A6 is spacious and elegant, and there is a lot of attention to detail. The armrests, for example, are soft and plush for extra comfort and the integrated headrest system reduces the danger of whiplash. Additionally, the seats can be upholstered with a new material and sport seats are available in Valcona leather. The instrument panel has highresolution graphics and a new frame to better accent the display. Chrome trim throughout, even on the steering wheel spokes, keys the overall luxury and inlays are available in either faux aluminum or luxury wood. The rear seats are also plush and the L-shaped headrests improve the driver’s rear view visibility. Audi offers a broad range of engine choices for the A6 — six gas and four

Pop up ads BY PATRICIA C. FRANK Anyone who uses a computer is familiar with pop up ads. These are ads that suddenly appear on your computer screen uninvited and unbidden. They are unrelated to what is going on. They have a message and they hope to capture your attention. They succeed by flashing that message on the screen. This motion interrupts what you are doing and you are drawn to it momentarily. Most people find these ads annoying and avoid looking at them. There are even ways to block them completely. In real life there are also many pop up ads. There are many thoughts and impulses that occur to you suddenly, out of the blue. They just pop into your head. They may have nothing to do with what you are thinking or doing at that moment. You may pass by some flowers on your way to a meeting and feel the urge to buy them for someone but you do not want to be late so you keep going. The flowers were a pop up ad. There is a wonderful story about a man driving through the rain about 11:30 one night on a deserted Alabama highway.
Suddenly standing on the side of the road he saw an older woman struggling with the lashing wind and rain. Even though the man was exhausted from a long day of work and a long drive and was anxious to get home to his family. He stopped to pick her up take her to safety, get her help and put her into a taxi cab. She seemed to be in a big hurry. A week later he received a gift and a note from her thanking him. She said that because of his kindness she was able to get to the bedside of her dying husband just before he passed away. It was signed Mrs. Nat King Cole. It is a good idea to train yourself to act on the pop ads. Do not rationalize them away. Do not ignore them. Take the umbrella if it occurs to you, even if there is no rain in the forecast. Pay attention. They are messages of opportunity. Get in the habit of following your positive impulses. It goes without saying that only positive impulses should be followed, not selfdestructive impulses, like that extra piece of cake if you are trying to lose weight. Eat this...drink that... BY SHARI LYNN ROTHSTEIN-KRAMER So here I am, the new food & wine columnist for Aventura News. Why me? I love to eat and drink. I’ve been doing it my whole life (okay, no more bad jokes, I promise). But seriously, I have had an ongoing love affair with food and wine for as long as I can remember. And from that love comes passion and curiosity, which turns to knowledge, and eventually, expertise. I spend my time eating and imbibing all over the world. When traveling to foreign countries, I go directly to the first market I can find and select things I’ve never tasted before—and promptly eat them. Ever taste a Durian? Its pungently strong odor is repellent, yet the soft yellow flesh of this Thai fruit is pretty sweet. How about conch salad made from a conch you saw pulled out of the ocean with your own eyes? Chewy, sweet, salty and mixed with freshly picked cilantro… heaven! Now, let’s talk wine. There’s no wine tasting I have ever passed up. Swirl, smell, sip, chew…swallow. Ah, reds, whites, rosés—each has a place in my heart. From enotecas in Rome to wine bars in New York City, sipping and nibbling is one of the greatest pleasures in life. But right now, let’s focus on the local fare. I recently went to Aventura’s newest hot spot, Bar Rosso, the Italian eatery that is nestled snugly behind Loehmann’s Plaza. I have been there a few times and I really like it. Why? The place feels like home, only better because I don’t have to cook or clean the dishes. I’ve tried most every appetizer on the menu, which is a mix of traditional Italian peppered with Modern American. Want just a nosh? Try the little plates (a.k.a. piccolini). For folks who appreciate “treats from the fryer”, opt for crispy artichokes or arancini a.k.a. rice balls. Smooth, creamy inside
protected by a crunchy outer shell. But for those who want more, main plates include skirt steak (cooked practically in the flames creating tender meat and a charred, scented crust), colossal shrimp (flash-flame broiled and still “pop” when you bite into them, and snapper with panzanella, or bread salad. Light, flavorful and not loaded with other “stuff” so you can actually taste the flavor of the fish. My favorite by far is the organic eggplant. More like a generously portioned stack of eggplant pancakes, Chef Joshua Medina layers a not-too-sweet tomato sauce with just enough cheese and nicely cooked eggplant (cut not too thick, not too thin, not too hard, not too mushy, but just right). It’s filling but not heavy, and enough to share. I loved it so much I asked for the recipe. You never know when you might want to attempt this at home, but more likely, get over to Bar Rosso and let Josh do the work. It’s worth the trip. Eggplant Parmesan 1 Eggplant Peeled and Sliced 1/4” Thick Crosswise 1 oz pecorino 1 oz Ricotta 1 oz Mozzarella 1 tsp Blanched Basil 1 tsp Chiffonade Raw Basil 1 oz Olive oil 2 oz Tomato Sauce Bread sliced eggplant and fry until GBD. Top each slice with hot Gravy and a Tbsp of the cheese basil mix. Then stack the eggplant and broil. Drizzle olive oil and basil chiffonade.
