City of Sunny Isles Beach hosts Anchors Away Foundation 'sail-ebration'

BY BARI AUERBACH Hundreds of business and community leaders recently joined in "sail-ebrating" the mission of the Anchors Away Foundation when the City of Sunny Isles Beach hosted an Aventura Marketing Council breakfast meeting at the Newport Beachside Hotel & Resort.

The Anchors Away Foundation, chaired by Aventura Commissioner Billy Joel, in cooperation with Miami-Dade County Public Schools and a dedicated crew of benefactors, helps children with cognitive and physical disabilities learn to sail and set a course for success in the marine industry.

AMC Chair Cliff Schulman of Greenberg Traurig, an Anchors Away Foundation board member, launched the event by introducing Sunny Isles Beach lead- Sunny Isles Beach Mayor Edelcup with ers including Mayor Norman S. Norman Supt. Carvalho Edelcup, Commissioner Roslyn Brezin and City Manager Rick Conner. Dr Jayne Greenberg, Executive Director of Physical Education and Health Literacy for Miami-Dade County Public Schools along with Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho and Assistant Superintendent Enid Weisman were also on deck to share in "sail-ebrating" the success of Anchors Away.

"About five years ago, Dr. Jayne Greenberg came to the Aventura Marketing Council to share her excitement about a new marine academy," Comm. Joel explained.

"Her dream was to teach disabled kids how to sail on their own while learning science, math and life skills.

"Our third Anchors Away launch marked the addition of 14 new boats to our fleet - bringing the total to 29. Last month, we ordered three more and on Thursday, October 22, 10 a.m. at Oleta River State Park, we will hold our fourth launch. The Anchors Away program is a perfect example of the partnership between Miami-Dade County Public Schools and the private business sector."

Aventura Hospital is proud to announce the establishment of the Aventura Circle, a hospital-wide effort on the part of the Aventura Hospital staff dedicated to helping those in need. The title Circle is an acronym for the team's motto: Community Involvement Requires Concerned Loving Employees.

Each month, the Aventura Circle selects a special cause, such as donating food, clothing and supplies to local not-for-profit organizations that benefit the poor, needy and homeless throughout Dade and Broward counties.

BY LYNN CARROLL Amid the current chaos in the financial markets, CPA Bob Lilienfeld at Melnick Lilienfeld & Castonguay says the thing to focus on is what to do now -and know why you're doing it.

Still, he says, stocks represent a good place for the young to invest, though he recommends broad diversification.

"Overall," Lilienfeld says, "you're still better off owning a mix of market index funds to cover U.S. and foreign stocks."

Now is the right time to buy a first home if you're single with income under $75,000 or married with income of less than $150,000.

"The government is giving an $8,000 tax credit to help purchase that first home," Lilienfeld says. "In the long-term, it's

always better to know what your payment is. There are long-term advantages and, in time, selling for a profit may be tax free."

Right now, he adds, the government and banks may lend a hand.

"The free credit that helped fuel the housing boom now brings cheaper mortgages.

Rates on 30-year loans are at about the lowest they've been in decades."

Lilienfeld suggests clients write down the "what-ifs" that could affect their financial future - an exercise he says has several positive effects because, for one, it forces people to think about how to deal with the possibilities.

"You usually find things aren't as bad as you'd expected," Lilienfeld says. "It also points out that the good old days may likely be gone for good."

"Cruisin’ for Literacy" The Mocombeian Foundation sets sail aboard Carnival's Destiny December 10 - 14

A portion of the proceeds collected from ticket sales will be donated to the Mocombeian Foundation, a nonprofit organization who's mission is to empower and inspire at-risk youth to become critical thinkers by teaching reading strategically.

Choreographer and Ballet Master Vladimir Issaev hangs dancing shoes at new location

BY JEREIMA FERRER The Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida recently took a big leap into their new 8,400 square foot location at 15939 Biscayne Boulevard where they've grown into three fully-equipped state-of-the-art dance studios.

The immaculate space designed by local architect Ari Sklar features sprung dance floors, ballet barres and mirrors, abundant natural light and a large waiting area for families. But that's not all‌ the space was built as "environmentally friendly" using polished concrete floors and non-toxic paint.

The Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida, a non-profit organization founded in 1997 by Russian-born Ballet Master and Choreographer Vladimir Issaev presents professional ballet performances throughout the community and has grown tremendously over the years to offer classes including pre-ballet, classical ballet, hip hop and jazz year-round for children three years of age through adulthood.

The opening of this grand new location reflects the growth of the organization and the demand highlighted by the increase in enrollment from 2008 to 2009.

The new location will combine the activities of the professional ballet company, the ballet school and it will be welcoming additional disciplines of dance including flamenco, modern dance, Pilates Š, Yoga among others. It is the only school in South Florida that teaches the Russian "Vaganova Method", named after a Russian teacher who devised her own method of classical ballet training.

STOPPING THE TRAIN Q: Are men physically able to stop when already engaged in sexual intercourse?

If so, why do they use that excuse to keep going when asked to stop?

A: Very good question. There comes a point during intercourse when a man can’t stop himself. If a freight train were crashing into the room, he still could not halt ejaculation. Learning to recognize the moment right before he gets to that point is the key to ending premature ejaculation. If, when he approaches that precipice, he calms himself down a little, he can regain control. Some men are afraid that if they do stop from going over the edge they’ll lose their erection and won’t be able to reach the goal of having an orgasm. They have to be taught that it’s a baseless fear and if they are going to become good lovers they have to learn to gain as much control as possible.

Q: Is it normal to not have an orgasm every time you have sex? I have been

involved in a sexual relationship for two years and have only had four orgasms. (I am a 19-year-old female).

A: My guess as to what is happening here is that except for those four times, the two of you normally don’t engage in enough foreplay to get you sufficiently aroused to have an orgasm during intercourse. What you have to do is prolong foreplay to the point of being almost ready for an orgasm and then start intercourse, or, if that doesn’t work, continue foreplay until you do have an orgasm.

Many women can’t have an orgasm from intercourse alone, and that’s all right as long as they achieve sexual satisfaction in another way.

Q: Over the years, the role of sexuality has changed within many different cultures. How do you account for the wide variation of views held by different populations considering we are all the same species?

A: I’ve traveled all over the world speaking about sex, and at my lectures I always ask for questions, and guess what? Most of the time the questions are pretty much the same. I’m not saying there aren’t differences in people’s attitudes, but deep down there are many more similarities. I think if you remove the surface differences, basically sex is about giving and receiving pleasure and procreation.

VIEWPOINT Coal remains as malevolent Should charity hospitals be as ever charitable?

BY CARL POPE Both sides continue to draw lines in the sand as climate and energy legislation debates rage in Congress. Many heavy-hitters are making their voices heard - but none perhaps more so than the coal industry.

Let's compare what's best for the United States here. Clean energy legislation will create millions of jobs, boost the economy, and reduce our global warming pollution. Giving Big Coal endless loopholes props up an industry that poisons communities, pollutes our air, adds to our global warming pollution, and has done nothing to end its job growth stagnation in the past decade (a recent study shows the wind industry now employs more people than coal mining!).

You see, using coal to power our country is dirty from beginning to end coal's entire lifecycle harms people and the earth. At the beginning, destructive mountaintop removal coal mining in Appalachia destroys watersheds and contaminates community drinking water.

Mining companies fill streams with waste blown off the tops of mountains.

But in reality - communities just want to see mountaintop removal coal mining stopped all together.

And yet the dirty coal cycle doesn't stop with mountaintop removal. Trucks take the coal to the processing facilities but not before they leave a trail of harmful dust and haze in mining communities.

Once burned, coal is just as dirty. It causes more than 30 percent of our global warming pollution and contributes to major health problems, including asthma and other respiratory issues - not to mention the mercury pollution coal plants spew.

But the major newsmaker recently comes from the very end of the coal cycle - the ash waste from burning coal which is frequently kept in artificial ponds near coal facilities. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) finally released a list of the 44 coal ash sites deemed “high hazard.” Coal ash is the same black goo that devastated a Tennessee town last December when a Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) dam failed and released 1 billion gallons of the heavy metal-laden sludge into area rivers.

This comes two weeks after a coali-

tion of organizations including the Sierra Club filed a Freedom of Information Act request demanding the release of the list.

The "high hazard potential" coal ash storage sites listed by EPA are all located near coal-fired electric power plants concentrated in 10 states. After doing some demographic research on these locations, we've also noticed that 20 of the coal ash storage sites are in areas where high percentages of people live below the poverty line (some sites have more than one pond).

We still don't know just how many of the hundreds of coal ash sites nationwide are leaking toxic pollution into local drinking water supplies, but evidence is mounting that dozens of communities are living with that nightmare every day.

We do know that the cancer rate is as high as 1 in 50 for those living near themost hazardous sites.

An industry that fights to keep communities in the dark about hazards is not interested in what is best for the public, only in what is best for the industry's bottom line. The industry doesn't deserve the free pass it has enjoyed for years.

We must stop mountaintop removal coal mining, lower our global warming pollution by decreasing the coal used for energy production, and regulate coal ash.

We must move the United States beyond coal and toward a clean energy economy.

Communities are in pain - this is a justice issue in Appalachia and other communities that suffer from devastating mining, being located near coal ash sites, or from dangerous soot and air pollution.

Until coal cleans up its act, it's time to get America running on clean energy.

A wind farm at West Virginia's Coal River Mountain that creates jobs both in the manufacturing of the farm and its operation makes a lot more sense than blowing up the mountain to get a small supply of coal. Instead of the toxic legacy of America's dirty energy past, the clean energy future promises millions of new jobs, healthier communities, and a safer climate for future generations.

BY JIM HIGHTOWER As Lily Tomlin says, "No matter how cynical you get, it's almost impossible to keep up."

The truth of Tomlin's observation struck me when I read that lobbyists for America's charity hospitals are campaigning to kill reform legislation that would require charity-care hospitals to provide get this - charity care. I sat there blinking for a while, thinking: You mean they don't?

As it turns out, no. Although they're called "charity hospitals," and although they are tax-exempt and they get some $6 billon a year worth of special tax breaks on the grounds that they provide free health care for low-income folks - they either don't, or provide very little. In fact, it's hard today to tell the difference between these non-profits entities and your run-of-themill for-profit hospital chains. The charitable outfits often turn away the poor from the hospital doors, and when they do provide treatment, they're likely to use nasty, bullying tactics to try to collect money from the poor.

They've gotten away with this by

claiming that they meet the charitable standard by holding some health fairs, offering occasional screening days for cholesterol, and doing medical research. A bipartisan proposal in Congress, however, says that tax-exempt hospitals could no longer refuse service to charity cases, and the bill also would rein in the hospital roughhouse bill collectors. In other words, this reform provision would require the non-profits to put the "charity" back in charity care - or lose their tax exemption.

Hospital lobbyists are squealing like stuck pigs. They recently sent an astonishingly cynical call for charity hospital executives to "oppose charity care." LET’S TALK CARS The Dodge Caliber is an odd looking vehicle with its “techno” design, yet it has the functionality of three different vehicles — a station wagon, a hatchback and a minivan.

The Caliber made its debut as a 2007 model, replacing the Neon, and little has changed for 2009, though the high-performance SRT4 model was added to the lineup last year. Four models are available, all with four-cylinder engines — SE, SXT, R/T and SRT4 — and either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.. The SE and SXT come with a 148-hp 1.8-liter engine (a 158hp 2.0-liter engine is an option for the SXT). The R/T gets a 172-hp 2.4-liter engine and the SRT4 comes with a 2.4liter, 285-hp turbocharged powerplant.

As for transmissions, the 1.8 liter engine is mated to a five-speed manual gearbox; the 2.0 comes with a continu-

ously variable automatic transmission (CVT); the 2.4 is available with the fivespeed manual in the front-drive R/T, and the CVT in the all-wheel drive R/T; the SRT4 comes only with a six-speed manual gearbox.

Caliber is a five-passenger, five-door vehicle and it does have some practicality in its design and function. The familiar Dodge crosshair grille and large flanking headlights dominate the front. The lower bumper separates the grille and headlights from a lower air intake and fog lamps.

The side features a wedged beltline and bulging fenders, tires that fill up the wheelwells and longitudinal moldings with a chrome accent along the lower doors. The roofline arches from the base of the hood and flows over the side doors into the upright lower liftgate. The rear is accented by a short overhang and a steeply raked back window beneath a lipped spoiler. Oversize taillights jut from the fenders.

On the inside, there is plenty of headroom in the front passenger compartment and the front seats are comfortable.

senger seat) allow for even more hauling space and room for long items such as skis, surfboards or ladders. There’s even a cooler for the glove box to keep water bottles and canned drinks cold.

New for 2009 are Uconnect Tunes and Uconnect GPS. Uconnect Tunes includes a 30-gigabyte hard drive for storing as many as 6,700 digital songs or photographs, and movies can be played on the dashboard navigation screen when the vehicle is in Park. Uconnect GPS combines the features of Uconnect Phone and Uconnect Tunes with navigation and real-time traffic. The system includes an

integrated voice recognition system and touch screen for easy operation. There’s also a drop-down stereo speaker in the liftgate that’s ideal for tailgate parties.

Base pricing on the 2009 Dodge Caliber ranges from $14,000 for the SE model to $22,435 for the high-performance SRT4, though you might find those figures much lower in today’s environment.

BY DR. MICHAEL GILINSKY As a family practice physician, every day is an adventure as one never knows what medical ailment is going to appear in the exam room, from soup to nuts. We have to stay on our toes as our focus is on every body system, from male pattern baldness to arthritis of the baby toe. My practice evolved into an adult practice limited to patients 14 years and older. I have limited my practice to give my patients a minimum amount of 30 minutes for an established visit and 60 minutes for a new patient. Patients are yearning for “good old-fashioned” medical care. All patients would love 24/7 access to their physician via cell phone or pager. All patients deserve same-day appointments, even house calls, emergency department visits, and hospital visits. Because of this commitment, my practice gives me time to study, time to read, and time to consult with specialists for my patients’ health.

My emphasis is on preventative medicine, as preventing heart disease and cancer are two of the greatest challenges our

society faces. This is the “front line” in my office. By analysis of blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and the use of nutritional and exercise interventions, we are able to diagnose and prevent certain diseases. We can prevent blockages of arteries, stave off kidney diseases, and slow diabetes progression. Cessation of smoking and careful cancer screening techniques lead to earlier diagnoses or, in many cases, prevention of colon, prostate, ovarian, lung, breast, and uterine cancer.

Obesity is also a great risk factor for cardiovascular disease and cancer, so I utilize nutritionists and personal trainers as well as metabolic testing to evaluate calories burnt in a typical day and then plan a course of treatment.

Finding a balance in life is key! We must find ways manage our own life, our family’s needs, and maintain our involvement in the community. Stress in these modern times is upsetting this delicate balance - in my next column, I will go into ways of restoring this balance to make ourselves happier, more productive citizens.

‘Ageless Fitness’

BY BARI AUERBACH “Fitness is a fountain of youth!” A statement proven time and again by the exceptionally fit people often seen at gyms who look at least ten years younger than their actual age.

One of the first steps to “defying gravity” and looking forever young is to learn more about what happens to our bodies after entering the “30 something” realm…

According to the website Workoutsforwomen.com, our body is at its peak at about age 30. After this, the key components of fitness decline leading to a tendency to put on weight… Bone and muscle loss begins around age 35.

Flexibility and strength are also on the decline, as body fat levels and blood pressure are on the rise. A whopping 50% of these changes are a direct result of inactivity.

With regular exercise you can take control of your life and delay the effects of the aging process. Additionally, you can reverse many of the effects that have already taken place.

So how do you take control? You have to choose to move! Make exercise an integral part of your daily routine. A good exercise routine contains all three elements of fitness including: 1) strength or resistance training 2) aerobics 3) flexibility. By far, the most ideal way for a woman to workout is circuit-training which incorporates these three elements into one effective and time efficient routine.

Some women buy into the common misconception that an aerobics only exercise routine is the answer to weight loss and weight control. This is definitely not the case. Since 75% of the calories that you burn are burned at rest, aerobic exercise is not as effective as developing muscle, to increase your body’s ability to burn calo-

ries around the clock.

As a result of the natural aging process, ladies lose lean muscle mass every year and replace it with fat. This is the primary reason that weight control and weight loss becomes so much more difficult then when you were 18. One pound of fat burns only about four calories per day while one pound of muscle burns approximately 50 calories per day. Just think…after 10 years of muscle loss your metabolism has slowed down by as much as 450 calories a day.

So if you want to lose fat, gain muscle tone, firm your arms, flatten your abdomen, lift and shape your rear, and maybe shave a few inches, then include strength training into your workout routine.

Studies have shown women who included strength training in their exercise program lost an average of 44% more fat than those who didn’t.

The behind the scenes effects of strength training are even more important.

A regular exercise program which includes strength training will slow down and reverse many of the effects of aging. Even people in their 90’s have seen up to a 200% improvement in strength within a few weeks of starting an exercise program.

Uncovering a Hidden Asset

BY JON KIDD AND KEITH OWEN Imagine you were informed that, thanks to a close relative, you had inherited millions of dollars worth of Coca Cola stock certificates that had been lost in the attic for decades. Since this “negotiable instrument” belongs to you, would you climb up into the attic to get it and immediately enquire as to its value?

Forgotten or unrealized assets are surprisingly more common than people think.

Many families have not liquidated their bonds or stock certificates due to a lack of communication from generation to generation. Life insurance premium financing creates a very similar scenario by tapping into an unrealized asset we call “insurable net worth”. A life insurance policy is an asset just like a house or car. You may qualify for a loan that pays the annual premiums, just like a mortgage or car loan, except the interest and payments may be accrued into the loan. Interestingly, the policy value itself typically repays the loan for those of age 70 and over.

5 Common Questions 1. What if I already have an estate plan in place?

Life insurance can supplement any existing estate plan. Most people are unaware of how life insurance premium financing benefits estate or charitable planning. It is recommended that individuals consult with their tax attorneys; gift taxes might be avoided with premium financing versus paying premiums outright.

2. What if I already have life insurance?

Very rarely is an individual insured up to their net worth or full capacity. Many people do not realize the need for that much insurance. If the hidden asset (one’s insurability) exists, why not benefit from it?

Further, many consumers are unaware that they have the option of exploring a sale of this policy in their lifetime to enjoy a “living benefit”. It is important to note that most insurance carriers do not condone originating new life insurance policies for the sole purpose of selling it for a financial gain as an investment.

Another common purpose of life insurance premium financing is for a corporate key person or to fund a “buy-sell agreement”. Today, people often consider a 1035 exchange and/or to sell a policy to ultimately enjoy lower premiums due to the new

mortality tables; the 2008 Valuation Basic Tables (VBT) adjustment has resulted in lower premiums due to longer life expectancies.

3. I have heard of premium financing before, how do I choose the most specialized firm?

Individuals should feel comfortable dealing with a specialized firm that focuses solely on premium financing; seek a practice that works with top CPAs, estate and tax attorneys among agents and advisors throughout the country referring clients to them. Premium loans should always be fully disclosed, transparent, safe and compliant and therefore be accepted by regulators, insurance companies and all other parties involved. A specialized firm will ensure that an individual is in a life insurance transaction that matches their needs. Choosing an experienced firm is important because insurance companies and regulators frown upon certain transactions that take place within the industry.

4. What if you have bad health?

You may be pleasantly surprised that you are likely to be insurable provided you do not have a terminal illness. An insured could be classified as a standard health risk, even if. There are advantages to be gained by working with a firm that has developed very strong relationships with underwriters

and insurance companies over the years and as a result, can leverage this to bring a client a better insurance rating.

5. This sounds too good to be true, why is everybody not doing this?

More than likely, they have not yet been made aware of it. It is also human nature to ignore death and unfortunately, this often results in harsh financial consequences. Each person has a limit to the amount of life insurance they may qualify for, usually based on their estimated estate tax liability, business interest or charitable involvement; they may, or may not, qualify for life insurance premium financing at a later date. This is not “something for nothing” or “free insurance”, as the premiums are paid for and an insured person is expending their insurable capacity. Not everybody qualifies and clients should understand the risks and rewards relative to this or any product that proposes to enhance the family’s net worth.
