VIEWPOINT

Yes, Cronkite was that good Summer jobs, a splendid stimulus BY DONALD KAUL Walter Cronkite died last week. Good. At the end he was ill, enfeebled and suffering from dementia. He was far too fine a man for that. He was 92, after all, and he'd had a hell of a run. By accident of birth and circumstance and talent, he was front-row center for virtually every major event of the second half of the 20th Century. For much of that time he was our eyes and ears at those events. His career was nothing short of incredible, unimaginable in these days of tin-cup journalism. As a young wire-service reporter he was one of the first journalists accredited to cover World War II. He was with the Allied troops during the North Africa campaign, then covered the Normandy invasion and, later, the Battle of the Bulge. He covered the Nuremberg warcrimes trials, then opened the first Moscow bureau for United Press at the birth of the Cold War. In 1950 he went to CBS to begin a legendary broadcasting career. He “anchored” CBS coverage of the 1952 Democratic and Republican national political conventions, the first time anyone had anchored anything, so far as we know. He was a tremendous success and on his way to television stardom. In the early '60s, he replaced Edward R. Murrow, himself a legendary figure, as the network's chief correspondent and took over the editor's chair of the evening news. Almost immediately the network expanded to a half-hour format from its previous 15-minute show, another first. His signature moments, those that gave punctuation marks to the history of those times, followed. The most famous, certainly, was his reporting of the death of President John F. Kennedy. Much is made of the fact that Cronkite was a good reporter---and he was---but most of the good television anchors have been good reporters. They could all cover a fire. What Cronkite was also was a fine actor with a wonderful sense of timing. I remember watching him on that awful day when we knew the president had been gravely wounded but didn't know how

gravely. Cronkite was on camera reading aloud from fragmentary reports as they came in, when they handed him a yet another piece of paper. He read it to himself, then paused and removed his glasses, his heavy, darkly framed glasses. And our hearts sank. We knew at that moment that Kennedy was dead. The announcement was mere confirmation. It was a remarkable performance; no one who saw it that day will forget it. Then there were the other moments: his almost childish “Oh boy” when Neal Armstrong stepped on the moon, his solemn report on Vietnam in 1968, when he stepped out of his reporter's role to declare the war “a stalemate” and counsel a negotiated settlement. It marked the beginning of the end for “Johnson's War” and his presidency. In 1972, at a time when networks had a two-minute limit on news items, he ran a 14-minute report on Watergate, thereby bringing that scandal to the full attention of the American public for the first time. Four days later, he ran an eight-minute segment on it. He retired in 1981, well before the precipitous decline of the news business, which was probably just as well. He'd seen and been part of the best of it. Actually, one of my favorite images of Cronkite dates back to the early days of television, 1953, when he served as narrator and on-camera reporter for the fictional documentary series, “You Are There.” The show recreated historic events---the Hindenburg disaster, the Battle of the Alamo, Waterloo---and covered them as though they were breaking news. It was a delightful show, informative, interesting and Cronkite, again the actor, was terrific. In 1995, 14 years after his retirement, a “TV Guide” poll ranked him No. 1 in seven of eight categories for measuring television anchors. He expressed mock astonishment that Maria Shriver had beaten him in the eighth---attractiveness. We shall not look upon his like again. -Don Kaul is a two-time Pulitzer Prize-losing Washington correspondent who, by his own account, is right more than he's wrong. BY MARC H. MORIAL In recent years, for millions of urban young people the end of the school year has meant the beginning of the fruitless search for summer jobs. And, unfortunately, in many of our cities, it has also meant misdirected idleness and a rise in youthrelated crime and violence. However, this year may be different. The Obama administration's infusion of $1.2 billion in stimulus funds for youth summer jobs promises to give hundreds of thousands of young people meaningful work experience, and keep many of them off the streets and out of trouble during the long, hot summer. This issue is especially critical in Black America. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, while overall teen unemployment has now climbed to 22 percent, Black teen unemployment stands at 39 percent - almost double the national rate. The percentage of unemployed Black teen jumped by more than 10 percent between April 2008 and April 2009. We know that summer jobs for youth not only funnel needed dollars into the pockets of teens and the budgets of their families, they also provide a crucial pathway to productive adulthood for the next generation. As the former Mayor of New Orleans I have consistently fought to expand summer job programs for young people and I have seen the positive impact first hand. Not only do local economies benefit greatly from teens spending their disposable incomes, but also the work experience gives young workers an alternative to hanging out on street corners during the summer months. If we want urban kids to value work, we have to give them work. It justmakes sense -- the more we give kids to do the better they will feel about them-

selves and the less trouble they will get into. And there is no shortage of work to be done. From office work to day care to cleaning parks and highways, teens can play a crucial role in providing workers for many of the infrastructure and "green" jobs that are essential to the nation's economic recovery. And because so many of them are computer savvy, they bring added value to the workplace and should be exposed to a wide variety of jobs beyond retail and fast food positions. Summer youth programs receiving stimulus funds must give first priority to teens and young adults who come from low-income backgrounds, are high school dropouts, have a disability or have no work experience or training. This is especially important at a time when the national unemployment rate is 9.4 percent, Black unemployment is 15 percent and adults are now competing for many of the jobs traditionally held by young people. An investment in teen summer jobs is an investment in America's future. I applaud the Obama administration for leading this comeback. I encourage employers to participate and I urge teens to take advantage of the opportunity to learn basic work skills that will lead to bigger paychecks and better jobs in the future.

Marc H. Morial is president and CEO of The National Urban League. Mr. Morial succeeds Hugh B. Price as the League's eighth Chief Executive. Mr. Morial served two distinguished four-year terms as Mayor of New Orleans from 1994-2002. During that time, he also served as president of the United States Conference of Mayors in 2001 and 2002.

Telecom Management services clients, not providers BY LYNN CARROLL Telecom Management, one of the largest neutral telecommunications agencies around, is a great choice for any business. Why? Because it serves clients, not provider companies. "We represent more than 25 different providers, including AT&T," says Telecom Management's Steve Schatzberg. "We're provider- and carrierneutral which means we fit our clients to the best carrier for their needs. We have millions of dollars in billings with each of our providers." Schatzberg says his firm has thousands of happy clients in all 50 states, ranging in size from companies employing thousands to singleperson offices. "Our clients repre- Steve Schatzberg sent all industries," he says, "including accounting, banking, construction, engineering, financial services, healthcare, insurance, information technology, legal services, manufacturing, mortgages, nonprofits, real estate, restaurants, software and travel. We have sales operations now in 75 major U.S. markets, South America, Europe, and Asia."

A Telecom Management representative sits down with each customer to do a complete free review of voice and dataservice bills to identify areas where the company can save substantially on monthly expenses - often increasing service levels in the process. "Many companies today are looking beyond traditional PBX phone systems to solve problems presented by such things as hurricanes, natural disasters and unforeseen events that require a very rapid response," Schatzberg says. "One solution many forward-thinking organizations use is Voice Over IP, or VoIP. By adopting a VoIP solution, you gain the ability to have an entirely mobile workforce. "Telecom Management has installed more hosted VoIP systems in Florida than any other company. Our expertise helps guide our customers through the transition to this new platform." Telecom Management is the only call a company needs to place, Schatzberg says. "We become your one point of contact for an expeditious, headache-free resolution." Historically Yours BY BOB DIAMOND THE RIGHT TO A FAIR TRIAL The American Bar Association recently honored two relatively unknown black lawyers who, because of their tenacity and bravery, changed the U.S. justice system forever “by paving the way for civil rights protections.” As a reward for their efforts, they saw “their client murdered, their practices destroyed, their families threatened and their homes burned to the ground.” In 1906 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Ed Johnson, a Negro, was wrongfully convicted of raping Nevada Taylor, a white woman. The verdict was not based upon credible evidence but the result of the community so poisoned by racism that there was no way the defendant could have received a fair trial. Judge McReynolds promptly announced sentence - Johnson was to hang. His assigned lawyers did not appeal. Because of the possible negative impact on their practice, two black law partners Noah Parden and Styles Hutchins, reluctantly agreed to take the appeal. When asking for a stay pending appeal, McReynolds scolded

them, “Do you think a Negro lawyer could possibly know the law better than a white lawyer? When State Court appeals for a stay failed, Parden and Hutchins filed an unusual petition - to the Federal Court alleging violations of Johnson’s constitutional rights. Judge McReynolds commented that their appeal was frivolous because “federal judges do not have the authority to issue stays in state criminal cases.” For the first time in history, a black lawyer was lead counsel in a case before the Supreme Court. Parden argued before Justice John Marshall Harlan for the stay pending appeal. When news spread of Harlan’s granting the stay, a lynch mob, with Sheriff Joseph Shipp’s complicity, stormed the jail, put a noose around Johnson’s neck, demanding his confession of guilt. When Johnson stated his innocence, the mob hanged him. Sheriff Shipp and his deputies were charged with contempt of court for failure to protect Johnson. Defendants were found guilty and sentenced to jail. The Supreme Court eventually affirmed every one of Parden’s constitutional arguments, including a federal constitutional right to a fair trial in state criminal proceedings. Parden stated, “Nothing less then our civilized society was at stake.”

Arnold Mittelman's American Theater Festival and National Jewish Theater include Aventura in national plans LYNN CARROLL

PROVOCATIVE QUESTIONS FOR PROVOCATIVE PEOPLE LC: Following 21 years as Producing Artistic Director of Coconut Grove Playhouse, we hear in the last few years you've undertaken some new theatrical ventures in South Florida. What are American Theater Festival (ATF) and National Jewish T h e a t e r ( N J T ) a l l a b o u t ? AM: I formed ATF as a way to bring the work of America's finest producing not-for-profit theaters to venues throughout the country. You can find exceptional theater of all kinds, from classical works to musical comedy, all across the U.S., but nobody outside the region ever sees it. At the same time, many theaters are often dark. ATF acts as a matchmaker, bringing regional theater productions that truly deserve extended life to communities and venues with underserved audiences. NJT was established to celebrate and preserve the genius and cultural significance of important Jewish Americans and Jewish history through theater. It's all about preserving a cultural identity and passing it down through the generations. LC: Are these organizations staging shows yet? AM: Yes, "The Soul of Gershwin: The Musical Journey of an American Klezmer," by Joseph Vass, was the inaugural ATF/NJT co-production. It debuted at Parker Playhouse in Fort Lauderdale in March 2008, and was revived for a 2-week run in November 2008.

In January 2009, ATF/NJT brought Theodore Bikel in "Sholom Aleichem: Laughter Through Tears," which premiered in Washington DC, to Parker Playhouse; this fall "Laughter Through Tears" begins a tour to New York, Toronto, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Chicago. LC : W h a t a r e y o u r l o n g - t e r m p l a n s f o r t h e a r e a ? AM: I'm in discussions with the new Aventura Center for the Performing Arts, opening in November 2010, to have my programming staged there regularly, in numerous but longer runs of three or four weeks per engagement. I look forward to our shows being a part of this exciting new theatrical arts facility. LC: How are such arts-related not-for -profits funded these days? AM: A great deal of my support originally came from people who supported my work at Coconut Grove Playhouse as well as other national donors. We have also adopted a strong attitude towards strategic partners. When they get involved with us, we make it clear to them what they will get in return, including economic opportunities.

ASK DR. RUTH BY DR. RUTH WESTHEIMER

Leave his girlie magazines alone Q: I’ve been dating my boyfriend off and on for about seven years. We plan to be married in March. My concern is that my boyfriend lives approximately three hours from me and he says he masturbates and has done this for the past seven years using girlie magazines. When he visits, he claims his masturbation stops. When we make love, he says he enjoys it, but sometimes he does not ejaculate. He says he doesn’t always have to ejaculate to enjoy sex with me. Has masturbation caused him not to ejaculate yet still enjoy ssex, or is he lying? Can or will using those magazines cause him to fantasize to the point of not ejaculating? I’ve destroyed some of his magazines, but he just replaces them. A: It is possible that it is easier for your boyfriend to ejaculate when he masturbates. He may have gotten used to a certain pressure and movement. So the first thing to do is tell him to use your hand and to show you how he masturbates to ejaculation. Don’t even talkg about it; just say that you want to learn to know exactly what pressure he needs and what kind of movement he needs to be able to ejaculate. Since you are already having sex, I am going

to assume that living together before marriage would not be against your values or your beliefs, so I would strongly suggest that before you make that ultimate step of a marriage that you do try living together. If it does not help when he shows you how he needs to be stimulated, then before you get married you should go to see a sex therapist. Destroying the magazines is not going to be helpful at all because he might need them when he masturbates in order to concentrate and in order to be able to have an erection. Q: I am a very healthy, very active 21-year-old who loves sex with my wife from alpha to omega. One of the problems I am having is premature ejaculation. After consulting with some of my older peers of the opposite sex, I found that masturbation prior to sex works very well, yet it does become tedious. And even for me it only postpones it for mere moments. My main concern is about my wife’s “G spot.” I want so badly to find out how or where to “work it.” I am very turned on by bringing my wife to orgasm, yet it seems so blase. How do I access my wife’s G spot and how do I bring her to multiple orgasm? A: First of all, the method that your friend recommend to keep you from ejaculating prematurely is not a good one. You should get some books such as “Dr. Ruth’s Guide to Sensuous and Erotic Pleasures” and Dr. Bernie Zilbergeld’s “Male Sexuality” in order to learn how to recognize the premonitory sensation that comes just before it is too late to stop yourself from ejaculating. If you can’t learn the proper techniques from these books, then go to a sex therapist, and take your wife.

Who says summer is 'slow' for business? Not around here! AMC members recently crowded into U.S. Century Bank's Aventura branch lobby before opening hours to enjoy the best networking in town - AMC's SpeedBiz / Lightning Biz program always growing and always going strong! At SpeedBiz, AMC members from a variety of different industries come together to network in a oneon-one environment and promote their business while learning about other member's businesses as well. Here's how it works: Similar to everpopular Speed Dating, members are lined up in two rows facing each other, each set of two partners has three minutes to exchange business cards and a snapshot of what they do professionally before the bell rings and they rotate to their next partner. Ultimately, each participant will meet up to 30 members face-to-face. "SpeedBiz is a wonderful marketing tool which I have used to help introduce my practice to the Aventura Community," says Dr. Milagros Huerta, Pediatric Endocrine and Wellness Center. "I am a new member of the Aventura Marketing Council and by attending the SpeedBiz program I have met a number of friendly members who I now run into at larger AMC events and daily when I'm out in the community." "The underlying idea behind AMC's SpeedBiz is for members to have an opportunity to get the word out there about their business and

meet other members one-on-one to introduce and initiate business among members and encourage members to do business with each other‌ and it works!" says AMC Small Business Development Committee Chairman and Aventura Comm. Michael Stern of Stern Bloom Media. "U.S. Century Bank is proud to sponsor AMC's SpeedBiz program now for four years since they first opened their Aventura location in 2005," says Vice President and Aventura Branch Manager Margarita Lamadrid. "It's always a pleasure to host this group and we enjoy bringing the members into our location so they can experience the hospitality of our team that is so unusual to find in the larger banking institutions today." U.S. Century Bank is one of the fastest-growing and best-capitalized community banks in Florida. Locally-owned and headquartered in Miami, clients can rely on their financial strength, local expertise and personalized service to deliver the customer-driven banking solutions that will help them achieve their personal and business financial goals. Miami-Dade College receives major grant from U.S. Department of Education Emergency Management Program The U.S. Department of Education (DOE) recently announced that Miami Dade College (MDC) was selected to receive a $499,999 grant from the Emergency Management for Higher Education Program. The major grant will help the college with its existing and future emergency planning activities. The DOE created the Emergency Management for Higher Education (EMHE) Grant Program in 2008, as a tool to fund new or existing higher education institution projects and fully integrate campus-based emergency planning efforts. The grant will help MDC manage its own emergency mitigation efforts through a Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan (CEMP) for its eight campuses and numerous outreach centers. The CEMP will incorporate the guidance of both college personnel and an external advisory committee made up of representatives from partnering agencies, which include Miami-Dade County, Miami-Dade County Public Schools, the county's Health Department, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and various municipalities. "Collaboration with off-campus emergency response agencies is a particularly critical need at MDC due to the location of campuses within multiple law enforcement and fire rescue jurisdictions," said Scott Burnotes, MDC's director of emergency preparedness. To secure the grant, MDC submitted a proposal based on several needs, mainly improving its existing emergency plans and the entire College community's level of awareness, and maintaining the National Incident Management System requirements mandated by the Department of Homeland Security. The College was among 259 other high-

er education institutions from across the U.S. to apply for the government grant. However, due to limited funding, the DOE was only able to award the EMHE grant to 17 institutions in 2008. Instead of having all the institutions resubmit proposals, DOE decided to continue to fund quality projects from the 2008 submission and MDC was chosen along with 26 other higher education institutions to receive the 2009 EMHE grant funds. This is just one of the recent grants MDC has been awarded to improve safety and security at its campuses. Earlier this year, the Department of Homeland Security awarded the College $50,000 from the State Homeland Security Grant Program for enhancements to its mass notification capabilities and another $75,000 from the Urban Area Security Initiative Nonprofit Grant Program to increase security at the Freedom Tower at MDC. "MDC's eight campuses are serviced by six local law enforcement agencies and three fire rescue agencies," added Burnotes. "We're committed to enhancing collaboration and communication with these agencies to avoid duplication of effort. This way, we ensure that our emergency policies, plans and procedures are consistent with local, state and federal plans. Considering the population we serve, it's imperative that we continue being as prepared as possible for any major campus emergency." For nearly half a century, MDC has been regularly lauded for its academic and cultural programs and operations. In fact, it has often served as a national model for quality and efficiency. Recent grant developments confirm MDC's standing among the nation's top educational institutions. For more information, visit mdc.edu

Sharing some memories of ‘Uncle Walter’ Cronkite

Al Sunshine 4 YOUR MONEY I want to take a break from my normal financial/economic ramblings to remember Walter Cronkite. I grew up watching him chronicle some of the most turbulent times in U.S. history. From the assassination of John F. Kennedy, to the national debate about the Vietnam War, to Neil Armstrong walking on the moon, Walter Cronkite covered it all. He was a calm, steady force helping us to understand what was happening around the world. He asked tough questions and cut through the politicians’ “spin” to explain what was going on around us. He had just a few minutes every night to bring it all into our living rooms, and he did a great job. Those were way before the days of 24-hour cable news. But times changed, and Walter Cronkite retired. Still, he refused to fade from the public when it came time to worry about the relationship between journalists and the politicians they covered. Walter Cronkite knew reporters had the potential to become celebrities and sometimes “go soft” with the “bigwigs” to get them to sit down for “celebrity” interviews. He knew reporters could potentially overshadow the events they covered. He knew “balance and accuracy” in reporting took time and hard work. He also knew that American journalism as practiced by other “corporate conglomerates” sometimes lost patience with the time and expense that quality journalism requires, as well as the controversy it sometimes generates. He knew it was too easy for editors to demand “fast copy” that covered complicated issues, but didn’t take too much space or time on-air or in print. In the age of fast food, we developed a taste for “fast news,” and, in my opinion, he fought the trend for a long time. He spoke about “distortion by compression,” how compressing the complexities of the day’s news events often left out critical details that the public needed to know to better understand what was happening around them. It’s funny how his concerns so long ago still affect us today. I was lucky enough to meet Walter

Cronkite several times. As a student at the University of Miami, I visited CBS News in New York as part of a class project. I think it was 1968 or 1969. I was welcomed to watch the CBS Evening News in person and was introduced to Mr. Cronkite and the incredible staff that surrounded him. I shook his hand, sat inside some editorial meetings and was impressed by his intensity about the CBS Evening News broadcast that night. I was even more surprised by what a “regular guy” he was and by how much he worried whether his broadcast covered stories that affected his audience. Several years later, a local story I filmed with Ike Seamans at WTVJ made its way onto the “Cronkite Show” that night. I couldn’t believe how great I felt to be part of his CBS Evening News broadcast. A few years later, Mr. Cronkite was stuck in South Florida following a business trip because New York was snowed-in. He couldn’t fly back home to be on the air that night. My story from the Ralph Renick Report on tourists stranded at Miami International Airport was picked up by CBS News to explain why Mr. Cronkite wasn’t at his famous desk for that show. Again, I couldn’t believe how proud I felt to be on the CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite, even if it was only to report why he wasn’t there that night. He touched my career and I know he touched so many other co-workers here at CBS4 in Miami and in the industry. But he also taught me about the balance between getting news on the air everyday and making sure it was right. News is not just “black and white.” Many issues we report are complicated and include a lot of “shades of gray.” A reporter’s job is about making sure all sides of a story are fully explored. That way, the public can make up its own mind about the news it hears. And that’s a tough balancing act today, just as it was 40 years ago at the height of the “Cronkite Evening News.” Walter Cronkite leaves an incredible legacy. His dedication and quest for excellence continues to drive broadcast journalists all over the country today. Meeting “Uncle Walter” will remain a special memory with me forever. And his challenge to us — to strive for excellence in every broadcast and every story — remains as well. Watch Al Sunshine’s “4 Your Money” reports Monday-Friday beginning at noon. You may find Al’s blog at <www.cbs4.com/4yourmoney>.

“What is better, Term or Whole Life?” In the insurance world, the question of “which is better, term life insurance or whole life insurance?” is the equivalent of “what came first, the chicken or the egg?” In the 15-plus years I have been insurance licensed, I have been asked this question countless times. There appears to be two distinct schools of thought, each favoring one over the other. So what is the answer? First I think it is important to understand what the product names mean. Term life insurance is intended to provide coverage for a specified length of time. If the time horizon of the insurance need is somewhat definite, 10-years for example, than a 10-year term life would likely be a very efficient way to cover that need. Whole life is a little trickier. When people ask about whole life they are usually asking about “permanent insurance.” There are many types of life insurance policies that can fall under this category, including whole life, universal life, variable life, etc. These plans should be considered when the need for insurance is either unknown or it is permanent. An example may be when the benefactor is a special needs child or perhaps when the insur-

ance is implemented for estate tax planning. As in most aspects of planning, financial or other, it is most important to identify the need or the job that is to be accomplished. Only after the objective is known will you be able to determine which tool or insurance policy is needed to complete the job. Like building a home, most often more than one tool will be needed. Very often it is a combination of policy types that will best meet the short and long term needs. I typically advise to make sure the immediate and foreseeable needs are covered. Try to keep an eye on the future and maintain flexibility in the planning. The only thing that is certain is that insurance needs will probably change in time. When seeking advice for your insurance planning, be wary of those who speak in absolute terms. Words like “always” and “never” have no place at the table. Also, be aware of where you are getting your advice from. An experienced independent insurance broker should be able to educate you on the types of policies available from the most competitive companies and explain how each one can help you accomplish you goal.

Wishing well BY PATRICIA C. FRANK A wish is an expressed desire for something. It represents a longing, yearning or craving whim. It is something you want for yourself or for someone else. A wishing well, traditionally, is a place to toss a coin and make a wish. It is a concept that comes from European folklore. Water was a source of life and it was often a scarce commodity. Germanic and Celtic peoples believed that springs and wells were sacred places that were placed there by the gods. Water was considered a gift from the gods and was believed to possess deities. Successful armies even threw the armor and weapons of defeated enemies into the water as offerings to their gods. Water was also credited with healing powers and therefore wells were very popular with many people. They would drink, bathe and wish over them. People believed that the gods of the well would grant their wish if they paid a price. After uttering a wish they would drop coins into the well. The wish was granted by the god or guardian that dwelled in the well. Often, it

was believed that the wish was granted based on how the coin landed in the well and where. Dropping pennies in fountains is still practiced today. It is reported that tourists throw about 3 million pounds of coins per year into wishing wells. Most wishing well coins are harvested and given to charities. Wishing can be used as a form of prayer, or a way to send love. Begin by sitting quietly and repeating these phrases 10 times out loud or silently to yourself. “May I be happy. May I be well. May I be filled with kindness, love and peace.” Then, repeat this wishful prayer for another person or even a pet. “May you be happy. May you be well. May you be filled with kindness, love and peace.” You can extend these wishes to the people you like and to the people you have difficulty with. Finally, send these wishes to the whole world. Wish everyone well. Wishing is a powerful means of communication with yourself, with the Infinite Spirit and with others. Use it everyday and you will notice the positive changes in your life and in the lives of others. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. She can be reached at 305-788-4864, 212 308-0309.

Eat This... Drink That...

Where has all the Produce Gone? BY SHARI LYNN ROTHSTEIN-KRAMER I was born and raised in New York. For as far back as I can remember, come September, my family, my mom’s and dad’s sisters and their families would pack into my dad’s and uncle’s big old Cadillac Sedans and head out East to go “veggie picking”. Once we hit “farm” land, we’d pull to the side of the road at our farm of choice—and no, not a stand where strawberries are waiting in bushels—but real farms with plants and soil and vines and vegetables just waiting to be plucked and consumed. So, we’d all pile out, grab baskets and bushels and head for the fields. Fresh ripe red tomatoes, fragrant green peppers, and enormous eggplants in abundance! We’d pick and pick until our baskets overflowed. Then, it was off to the apple orchards. Again, with bushels in hand, we climbed trees to capture the stunning Red Delicious, McIntosh, Granny Smiths and more. The aroma of each raw fruit and vegetable was delicious. But the beast was yet to come. We’d rush back to my parent’s house, dump the spoils of the day, crack open the first of many bottles of wine and hold each person responsible for making a dish to contribute to the upcoming feast. By 6 pm, the table was filled with eggplant parmiagiana, gazpacho, stuffed green peppers, caprese salads, sausage, peppers and onions, apple tartine, apple pie and more. Again, the aroma of the “finished fare” perfumed the air. It was heavenly. Fast forward to wanting to relive those memories in South Florida. Okay, we are the citrus capitol, are we not? Then why is it that I can’t get a good orange here? Or tomato? In NYC, I’d pop into the Garden of Eden, my local gourmet shop, and there were heirloom tomatoes, Jersey tomatoes, ugly tomatoes, Taxi tomatoes, Zebra tomatoes, gorgeous Ruby Red grapefruits, and so many oranges. SO where did they get them? Oh, from Florida! We export so much of our great produce and do not get enough in return. We

speak about using local organic products and that works for restaurants (I’ve tasted Bar Rosso’s golden beet salad and it’s to die for, as is the Cold Buster from Big Squeeze(fresh orange juice, ginger…good and good for you) but they are buying in bulk. I went to the Publix in Aventura this past Sunday in search of some good fruit and veggies. What I found were mushy, rotting tomatoes (ew!), red grapes that were oozing in the bag (ew!) and ready for this: five oranges. Yes, just five oranges in the whole store. So what’s a consumer to do? Sure, I can go to Whole Foods, but it is triple the price and sometimes I am not in the mood to pay and pay and pay. Florida is an incredible state with amazing weather. Granted, if you schlep all the way to Delray, Girls and Boys markets provide some relief to the great elusive veggie picking memory. At girls, you can snip hydroponic strawberries off their vines (all by yourself!) while wandering through lovely gardens. At Boys, right next store, the veggies are abundant and you get to taste whatever you’d like. Happy helpers core apples, slice open citrus, cut chunks of watermelon and pineapple for customer approval. And while I can’t play in the dirt or have tomato fights with my fellow shoppers like I did when at the farm, at least I see abundance. I see freshness. Mounds of fragrant herbs sitting next to a variety of lettuce, not far from hardy zucchini and yellow squash, and there’s even a variety of potatoes and onions. But again, that’s in Delray. I am all for bringing a super gourmet market to our town, where veggies and fruits intermingle and foodies, shoppers, and chefs can roam freely, picking stunning produce to use at home, in an industrial kitchen or anywhere else they choose.

Bnai Zion and you BY EILEEN GLASTEIN What should you do now? Worry? No, just buy a Bnai Zion Foundation annuity. Sum Sum Summer time! Now is the time to make plans for the coming season. Are you OK financially? Will the coming months be a joy to look forward to or a source of anxiety? We are all getting older, myself included. We are all a bit frightened over our loss of capital and investments. As for me, I thought I had done well in my saving for retirement. That was before. Now that I see my money has been used by the market specialists for their big bonus packages and I will have to work a few more years than I had planned. What can I do to insure that when I do retire I will be able to maintain somewhat the same lifestyle I enjoy now? Can I start saving money instead of depositing into my IRA account? My financial guy says “No No 1000 times No”. You can’t get any interest in the bank and you tie up your money. He says keep buying while the price is down now and in years it will come back. I don’t have time for things to come back. It’s people like me who have retirement in sight who are

“losers”. I have found a way to win. Even though I am not that old…I can still get a substantial interest rate from Bnai Zion Foundation. I have some real estate dealings that will bring me into a tax situation. I found that if I take an annuity at say 7% and I also get a tax deduction, that actual interest advantage will bring forth benefit of 9%. I collect monthly, quarterly, or annually for the rest of my life. I plan on living a long time and since Bnai Zion Foundation has been around for over one hundred years, I put my money on them. My income is guaranteed for life. That means I have security for life. Wow. That’s worth much more than just money. We are always looking for people to join our cause. We have a small group that meets for lunch every other month. We have fun: some lunch, talk about Israel and our projects and drum up as much money as we can to support children at-risk, the hospital in Haifa and so much more. Why not come along with me? Denise Rubin talks Real Estate

Celebrities BY DENISE RUBIN Glitz.. Glamour... Hollywood! Last nighwas the Michael Jackson memorial at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. I would give it an A+! A star studded spectacular and in good taste, so well done. It leads me to ponder on the excitement surrounding celebrities. We love to see, hear, and know all about them. We read People, US, Star, and all the magazines that revolve around them. We listen to the radio and watch T.V. shows like Deco Drive, Entertainment Tonight and all the buzz of celebrity gossip. My Real Estate career has been blessed by having celebrity clients. One of my first was a sports star, Rony Seikaly. This was in the 90's when Rony just graduated Syracuse and was the first draft pick for the Miami Heat, a new team then. I sold him a beautiful home in South Miami Courtyards of Galloway, with a tennis court and of course high ceilings, since he is 7'. I always become friends with my clients and this was no different just because he

was famous. I remember my son, who was small at the time, put on one of his sneakers and it was a size 15 and large. I went to a club with him and his sister in South Beach once and met his family, who were from Lebanon. I went on to do more business with him over many years. Five years after that he moved to Star Island and I sold his home too. Over the years I have been fortunate to sell property for other celebrities and sports stars. It's cool to be a Realtor to the Stars. It gives me something to tell my other clients and they love to hear it. I'm sure you all know who Natalie Cole is or heard her sing. Well I sold a condo in Miami Beach to her now ex-husband. It's a magical thing. The words, the names, the connotations, the image, the vision, the dream... The reality is that I've been blessed to have a Real Estate career that's been sprinkled with stardom.

When entering or getting back into the “dating game,” one of the first things people think about doing is shedding some extra pounds and spending more time at the gym…but beyond being physically fit to meet your match – here are some of the mental exercises virtually all singles should contemplate adopting into a “fit to date” regimen: Strength of Mind: You’ll need to build up a lot of mental fortitude if you decide to launch your profile on an Internet dating site. From fake pictures and false ages – to inappropriate solicitations and geographically undesirable overtures (Alaska is just a bit too far for a Starbucks date) – resilience is mandatory if you don’t want to come to the conclusion that there’s a need for a new dating website called “Psycho.com” Push Ups: In the new funny movie “The Ugly Truth” about the differences between how men and women perceive love and relationships, a successful female executive sheds her conservative wardrobe and dons a pushup bra in an effort to snare the guy she has a mad crush on. But for ladies who would rather not spend a fortune at Victoria’s Secret there may be an easier way… Just “push” for a date at any kind of sporting event – and odds are he’ll fall head over heels! ‘Wait’ Training: When searching for a soul mate, it’s much better to wait for someone who inspires fireworks than to settle for less than a spark. But patience is a virtue and if you wait long enough Mr. or Ms. Right will come along – just when you finally realize you really like having your own space and wearing that big, baggy T-shirt and not very sexy pair of sweatpants to bed at night. ‘Misfits’: If you get impatient waiting for Mr. or Ms. Right to come along, it could be tempting to start dating someone who has some flaws. For example, right now

you may be able to overlook the fact that your significant other is a narcissistic control freak who discourages you from ever leaving the house…This may soon become really annoying – especially if you’re forced to wear an ankle monitor with a tracking device attached. Heavy Lifting: To really help bolster your chances of living happily ever after with that special someone, any effective, results-oriented “fit to date” regimen should include tools for lifting your confidence and self-esteem…This means you now have a valid excuse to spend a lot of money on personal necessities including therapy sessions, cosmetic surgery, a new wardrobe, hair extensions and of course – a gym membership and personal training sessions!
