Community Dine Out! program spells success In an effort to send a message of optimism, Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Mark Trowbridge initiated a "community dine-out program" held recently for all of Miami-Dade County Trowbridge contacted the leadership of numerous local Chambers of Commerce under the Coalition umbrella, as well as the Aventura Marketing Council, the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Beacon Council, to support their local restaurants by encouraging their members to dine out on the evening of Tuesday, September 29th. The organizations encouraged their business leaders to postpone lunch meetings to dinner, move date-nights up to Tuesday evening, and switch their plans to eat out with friends , family and co-workers to support the Dine Out! program. "Our restaurants are an important part of the small business community across Miami-Dade County and many are hurting right now as people eat out less in an effort to save money," said Trowbridge. "We need to create our own stimulus program to get our residents and visitors focused on how we can begin to aid our own recovery" A similar program was created after 9/11 when tourism was dramatically affected by the

Aventura Hospital and Aventura Comprehensive Cancer Center celebrate National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

During this special ten-year anniversary celebration of the dedication of the Aventura Comprehensive Cancer Center, Aventura Hospital reminds the community of the importance of prostate awareness through a number of community events held throughout the month of September to commemorate National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. The month-long recognition started with a radio healthcare broadcast on September 5th featuring Radiation Oncology specialist Matthew Abramowitz, MD, Cancer Care Navigator Phil Fusca, MSW, and Survivor and Man-to-Man Prostate Support Group member Murray Mackson. This broadcast is jointly sponsored by the American Cancer Society and 100 Black Men of South Florida and is targeted toward the underserved and at-risk populations with the goal of increasing community awareness of the importance of early detection in the prevention and treatment of prostate disease. Dr. Abramowitz pointed out that prostate cancer treatment leads to better outcomes with early diagnosis and that prostate cancer affects the underserved disproportionately compared to those who receive early diagnosis. The following week featured a community prostate health screening and educational event in which the Aventura Comprehensive Cancer Center partnered with the city of Hallandale Beach's Hepburn Community Center, the American Cancer Society, 100 Black Men of South Florida and Memorial Cancer Institute. Over 100 attendees listened to physician presentations, visited health information booths and participated in a free prostate screening. Aventura Hospital affiliated Urologist Barbara Montford, MD educated the audi-

Additionally, Aventura Hospital and Aventura Comprehensive Cancer Center participated in community health fairs at Porta Vita in Aventura and at the City of Aventura's City Hall where those attending were reminded of the importance of prostate health awareness. Those in need of further support and education may attend the monthly Man-to-Man Prostate Support Group at Aventura Hospital, cosponsored by the American Cancer Society and Aventura Comprehensive Cancer Center. VIEWPOINT The NFL knows the political score BY DAVE LEVINTHAL The San Diego Chargers are hardly professional football's most prolific team, having advanced to just one Super Bowl (XXIX, where they lost to San Francisco) in 43 years. When playing politics, however, the Chargers are untouchable: Team owners, officials and players have combined to contribute more than $2.4 million to political candidates and committees since the 1990 election cycle, a Center for Responsive Politics analysis of federal campaign finance data indicates. That's nearly four times as much as the runner-up Houston Texans, whose associates have contributed more than $623,000 to federal candidates and committees during the past two decades. As the 32-team National Football League begins its 2009 season, the Chargers and Texans stand among 20 clubs to donate more than $100,000 to federal political interests during that time, according to the Center's analysis. Executives and employees of the league itself also teamed together to contribute more than $322,000. Certainly, the interplay of football and government isn't anything new. Several current and ex-congressmenTom Osborne, Steve Largent, Heath Shuler, J.C. Watts-are former professional players, as was Jack Kemp. And former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice once said her "dream job" would be NFL commissioner. But professional football's political activity has of late proved particularly notable, with various league and team executives, employees, and players donating more than $1.72 million to federal candidates and committees during the 2008 cycle alone. That figure represents nearly a fourth of all football-related contributions during the past 20 years. The NFL last year also created a political action committee-the Gridiron PAC-and opened an office in Washington, from which to better lobby lawmakers. Additionally, the NFL now employs two full-time staffers who track and lobby on labor law, media policy, illegal gambling, communications, and performance-enhancing drugs. The NFL's lobbying activity has increased considerably during the past two years, with expenditures on pace this year to reach $1.4 million. The Gridiron PAC serves to bolster this effort. Since its inception last year, the PAC has contributed $63,500 to 19 different through June 30. About two-thirds went to Democrats. Perhaps not surprisingly, monied team

owners and their top executives are the most likely contributors among people associated with professional football. In the Chargers' case, team owner Alex Spanos ranks as football's most prolific political bankroller. He alone has contributed more than $2 million to candidates and committees during the past two decades, almost all Republican. Houston Texans owner Robert McNair, meanwhile, has donated more than $543,000 to candidates and committees since 1989. Other six-figure contributors include San Diego Chargers President Dean Spanos, Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snyder, New York Jets owner Robert W. Johnson IV, and former New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson. Pittsburgh Steelers owner Dan Rooney has individually only contributed a fraction of these amounts to political interests, but President Barack Obama earlier this year named him ambassador to Ireland. Rooney's son, Tom, is a Republican congressman representing Florida's 16th District. While not at nearly the levels of team owners and executives, NFL players and coaches have also made tens of thousands of dollars of contributions in recent years. During the 2008 election cycle, Obama received a number of them including from Atlanta Falcons tight end Tony Gonzalez ($4,600), Chicago Bears coach Lovie Smith ($2,300), Cincinnati Bengals safety Roy Williams ($2,300) and Indianapolis Colts defensive end Raheem Brock ($2,300). Republicans haven't been sidelined either. Chargers coach Norv Turner gave $2,300 to GOP presidential nominee John McCain, while Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid contributed $2,300 to Republican presidential also-ran Mitt Romney. Other Romney bankrollers included Baltimore Ravens tight end Todd Heap ($2,300) and Buffalo Bills defensive end Ryan Denney ($2,300). The Indianapolis Colts' all-universe quarterback Peyton Manning in 2007 cut a $2,300 check to Republican presidential candidate and former Sen. Fred Thompson. Manning also contributed $2,000 to George W. Bush in 2004. And if NFL players are looking to financially support one of their own, a rookie option recently arose: Retired Bills and Steelers tight end Jay Riemersma announced he's running for Congress in Michigan as a Republican.

A Health system that bankrupts families BY JIM HIGHTOWER America's corporatized health care system keeps producing unpleasant surprises. We've known for some time that this system, which puts profit above care, is morally bankrupt-but now we learn that it's bankrupting hundreds of thousands of American families. In fact, the system's exorbitant medical bills have become the No. 1 cause of personal bankruptcies in the USA. Researchers from Harvard and Ohio State recently conducted a national, random-sample survey of more than 2,300 families who filed for bankruptcy in 2007. As they report in the American Journal of Medicine, 60 percent of those families were forced over the edge by high health care bills. The situation is likely much worse today, since this survey was taken before the current spike in job losses. Here's an even more sobering finding: The great majority of those bankrupted were not uninsured poor folks, but middleclass, well-educated people-75 percent of whom had health insurance! As one of the researchers, Dr. David Himmelstein, put it: "Unless you're Warren Buffett, your family is just one serious illness away from bankruptcy." What a disgrace for the richest country

in the history of the world. Indeed, America's deplorable connection between physical illness and fiscal disaster does not occur in other highly developed countries, because they provide national health insurance for all of their citizens. Yet, too many of our representatives in Washington don't really want to change our current system of health care profiteering. Instead, they merely want to tinker with reform by extending our corporatized system to more people. That will neither improve health care nor prevent more of those financial catastrophes. We need a complete overhaul of the system by adopting a single-payer method of insurance coverage for everyone. Prepare for 2010 tax changes with Jack Rosenberg at Goldstein Schechter Koch BY LYNN CARROLL Forward-looking financial planning is a smart move at any time, but some changes in tax rules coming in 2010 make it especially important to retain someone with the experience and expertise to provide timely advice, says CPA Jack Rosenberg, shareholder and director of tax services with Goldstein Schechter Koch. For example, he says, in 2010 laws governing conversion of a traditional IRA into a Roth IRA will change, as a conversion will be allowed even where adjusted gross income exceeds $100,000. "While you must start drawing money out of a traditional IRA, no later than age 70.5," says Rosenberg, "during your lifetime, you never have to draw from a Roth IRA." The conversion to a Roth IRA is a taxable event, he said, and the conversion must be reported as income on your tax return. "Going forward, (following the conversion) your Roth IRA earnings will never be taxed." For someone whose IRA portfolio depreciated substantially during last year's market "adjustment", it might make sense to convert now and pay lower taxes on the conversion, as the income that must be reported is the value of the IRA on the date of conversion. There is another silver lining to a 2010 conversion: a one-time tax break. "You won't have to pay the tax in 2010, but instead will include ďŹ each on your 2011 and 2012 tax returns. That's a nice deferral." Goldstein Schechter Koch is one of the largest full-service CPA firms in South Florida, offering traditional tax and auditing services as well as litigation support, financial planning, estate planning and international taxation. "We pride ourselves," Rosenberg says, "on our one-on-one service to our clients." For information, call 954-989-7462 or visit gskcpas.com

WLRN to hold studio screening of program on breast cancer survivor boat team

BY LYNN CARROLL

WLRN Public Television has announced a premiere screening of the film "All in the Same Boat: Stories of Breast Cancer Survivors" on October 15th at 6 p.m. in WLRN Studios, 172 NE 15th Street, Miami. The screening includes a 5:30 p.m. welcoming reception and complimentary station tours following the screening are available upon request. The film, which will make its television debut Oct. 21st at 7:30 p.m. on Channel 17 is about women who overcame their insecurities, battled breast cancer, and refused to let the diagnosis interfere with their quest to enjoy life. The half-hour show will also be aired Oct. 24th at 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. and Oct. 25th at 12:30 p.m. The program puts the spotlight on a dragon-boat racing team dubbed Save Our Sisters (SOS), whose members are all breast cancer survivors, and portrays how the diagnosis of breast cancer prompted them to embark on a journey, in the spirit of "we're all in the same boat." The SOS team is trained by an ex-marine who motivated its members to compete throughout Florida against

Life in the City ‘Costume Party’ If you haven’t already decided what you’re going to be for Halloween, here are some ideas for costumes you might actually consider wearing every day around Aventura: Police Officer: If you dress up like one of Aventura’s “best in blue” and get pulled over by a real cop for speeding, you might be able to avoid getting a ticket…just make sure your badge doesn’t say “Made in Taiwan.” Scrubs: If you or your kids dress up like a doctor or nurse, why not capitalize on the costumes. Tell Aventura Hospital for a fair price, when you go door to door trick or treating you’ll let everyone know the current wait time in the ER is only three minutes! Superhero: If you morph into a superhero who can fly, imagine how much faster you

Page 7 Honesty • Integrity • Values • Respect • Knowledge • Ethics

could travel around town looking down at Biscayne and feeling sorry for all the mere mortals still stuck in traffic…And if you have super human strength, you can impress everyone at the gym with how much you can bench or even better – have no problem lifting up and moving the car that parked too close to you before you get more dings in your door. Cashier: If you look good in green, it could be fun to dress up like a Publix cashier so you can scan your own groceries much quicker and never have to wait in line behind someone with hundreds of coupons again! Princess: You may want to pick a more unique costume – unless you don’t mind looking like every other girl in Aventura. Pirate: If you dress up like Captain Hook, don’t wear your eye patch around Lenscrafters or they may try to pull you in for an exam…But this could be the perfect costume for every one who already has the most valuable treasure - a home in Aventura where no one’s ever haunted by scary crime or frighteningly high taxes!

BNY Mellon hosts 'Meet Your City Manager and Police Chief' meeting BY BARI AUERBACH Aventura Marketing Council members were recently invited to attend an informative "Meet Your City Manager and Police Chief" meeting hosted by BNY Mellon, where City Manager Eric M. Soroka and Police Chief Steve Steinberg discussed good news about low tax rates and high levels of municipal services as well as public safety initiatives and tips for preventing identity theft and fraud. Jeffrey Levinson, BNY Mellon vice president/Aventura branch manager, and AMC Business Development Chair Peter L. Fishel, CPA helped welcome guests to BNY Mellon's Aventura location (18841 NE 29th Avenue) just a few days before an article in the Miami Herald proclaimed: "Aventura proposed budget keeps tax rate steady." `We're not raising property tax rates [the lowest in Miami-Dade County] and we're maintaining the same level of services," Soroka said. "The city has been able to do this because all of our street, park, sidewalk and landscaping maintenance are outsourced to the private sector so we can stabilize our costs. "Other important things going on include construction of the Aventura Arts and Culture Center - a 325-seat facility on Northeast 188th Street expected to open in the spring of 2010. "The City commission has adopted an ordinance providing incentives to developers to build energy efficient 'green' buildings; federal stimulus funds have been approved for repair of the Yacht Club Way bridge, resurfacing the fitness trail, and additional bus shelters. "The city is also working with the Florida Department of Transportation to address I-95 exit stacking problems and the feasibility of adding a second right turning lane when heading south on Biscayne from Ives Dairy Road." In regards to the red light camera program, Soroka noted at designated locations, accidents have

gone down substantially. Chief Steinberg explained the full-service Aventura Police Department has three divisions. "Administrative handles records, communications and fleet management; the Patrol Division encompasses all of our uniform services; and Specialized Services includes our Detective Bureau, Marine Patrol, Crime Suppression and Crime Scene units. We've also just dedicated a detective to address Internet and identity theft fraud. "Criminals don't need a gun anymore - they just sit behind computers and hack into people's systems. You have to be very smart about not leaving information around and frequently check bank and credit card statements for unauthorized activity. You can sign up for one of the services that will alert you if someone tries to check your credit or open an account - the fee is worth peace of mind to make sure you're notified early." Before and after the meeting, business and community leaders appreciated Aventura Marketing Council premier networking and business building opportunities - perks applauded by AMC members like Lori Fein of Prudential Realty. "Thank you so much for the invite to this meeting," she wrote. "It was valuable on so many levels - meeting with city leaders, the discussion, the

The Victory Center inaugurates successful after care and summer camp program BY LYNN CARROLL The Victory Center for Autism and Behavioral Challenges opened its doors this past summer to its new "Making Friends" after care and summer camp program. Since its foundation in 2000, the Center has run as a full-day, year-round school program of early intensive intervention for children with autism and other behavioral disorders in a safe and secure environment, based on the science of Applied Behavior Analysis. It's funded in part by The Children's Trust, a dedicated source of revenue established by voter referendum to improve the lives of children and families in Miami-Dade County. "We are here to serve our community to the best of our capabilities while functioning under 'Best Practices' for The Victory Center as a whole," said Executive

Director Thalya Olmos. "At the end of the day, we are all part of the autism community, and only want the best for our children and their families. "With the assistance of The Children's Trust MiamiDade County, we are able to implement such programs as 'Making Friends' After Care and Summer Camp and reach out to those in our community who may not have had the opportunity to be part of our school previously, or who may never have heard of our existence." The school, founded by parents of a child with autism with a volunteer Board of Directors, has grown from four students to more than 40. One-on-one instruction provides comprehensive, individualized treatment to help each student develop to his or her fullest potential, academically, socially, and emotionally. ASK DR. RUTH BY DR. RUTH WESTHEIMER

He must not be defensive Q: I’m 38 years old and my wife is 31. We’ve been together for six years. We’re both educated and have no kids. I love my wife dearly and don’t want to lose her. She says she loves me also and wants to try to work things out, but she can’t promise me anything. Although we spend a great deal of time with each other, romance and affection were lacking. I made her feel more like my buddy/best friend than my wife. In addition, I made it difficult for my wife to communicate with me because I get easily offended and tend to criticize back. As a result, she has withheld her inner feelings for three years. Now she says she is not sure if she can get those old feelings back for me. She recently told me she doesn’t feel affection for me anymore. I am willing to make the necessary changes for the sake of our mar-

riage. I also wonder if unrealistic expectations about marriage are involved here, since we both have solid core values. Do you have any advice? A: The best advice should come from this counselor you mention, as he or she will have a lot m ore information to go on than I do. The one thing I can say to you, based on what you’ve put down in your letter, is that you should go to this counselor with an open mind. You say that you love each other and that you treated your wife as a best friend, and yet she is quite upset. Your impressions of how you treated her and how she felt might be very different from hers, and if I’m right, this is going to come out as a result of the sessions with the counselor. If you get defensive, then this counseling is not going to have much effect. Since you admit you have this tendency, really try to listen to what the counselor has to say. Your wife will undoubtedly have some private sessions, and she will be telling this counselor some of her feelings that she has not been able to communicate to you. It’s only by acknowledging those feelings that you can patch this marriage, and the only way you can do that is if you listen carefully without prejudice.

Milan Soccer School Miami debuts at Bar Rosso event

BY LYNN CARROLL

If you want to see some world-class soccer this season, check out the teams from The Milan Soccer School Miami, where European coaches are showing local youngsters how to play an international sport like champions. Formerly known as the Eagles Soccer Club of Aventura, the Milan Soccer School Miami has been renamed to reflect a newly formed tie with AC Milan, a professional team from Italy that is one of the most celebrated championship clubs in the world, says German Pugliese-Bassi, who launched Aventura's soccer academy six years ago with Santiago De Urbina. "We were volunteer parents teaching our sons' teams in the Aventura League," he says. "We Coach Mauro Ardizzone and German PuglieseBassi with three AC Milan players thought that for the next step of growing the club we needed a more professional approach. That's why we partnered with AC Milan." The new partnership, which has imported coaches from Italy, was officially announced at a luncheon held recently at Bar Rosso, 19004 NE 29th Ave., where Mauro Ardizzone, director of coaching for the Italian program, explained the agenda to a group of more than 100 players and parents. "They were very excited Over 100 guests enjoyed the Milan Soccer School program at Bar Rosso that we will have links with such an important club," Pugliese says. "We will be able to form at least 10 teams of different age groups and levels, giving Northeast Miami-Dade and Southeast Broward kids a unique opportunity to be in an international soccer program." Pugliese says the program, which uses Ives Estates Park, 20899 NE 16th Ave., for games and practices, will apply techniques AC Milan developed for its divisions. Milan Soccer School Miami will form competitive teams for ages 6 to 16 and is developing a Little Stars program for ages 4 and 5. Comm. Sally Heyman helps District 4 students prepare for school with annual backpack distribution

For the third year, Miami-Dade County Comm. Sally Heyman, District 4, joined with Office Depot Foundation and the National Foundation for Women Legislators in distributing hundreds of backto-school backpacks to children living in District 4. More than 375 children attending local public and private elementary schools received these packs that contained essential school supplies including pens, pencils, erasers, crayons, glue sticks, rulers, pencil sharpeners, pencil cases, paper, notebooks, and folders. "Each year I look forward to providing some of the children in my district with these essential supplies prior to the beginning of the school year," said Comm. Heyman. "I hope this in some small way encourages them to apply themselves to their studies."

Heyman joined her staff to distribute the backpacks to selected students prior to the commencement of the school year. Recipients were selected through a random raffle at each school. Participating schools included: Aventura Charter School (ACES), Aventura Waterways K-8 Center, David Lawrence Jr. K-8, Sabal Palm Elementary, Greynolds Park Elementary, OJUS Elementary, Ruth K. Some strength showing in the housing markets

Al Sunshine 4 YOUR MONEY It is not a major signal that home prices are going to start climbing as high as they were before our local real estate bubble burst. However, the latest numbers out of Washington, DC, point out another sign the critical housing markets are seeing new strength here and across the country. At the same time, it’s also potentially bad news for anyone who’s still deciding whether or not to jump in and buy a home or condo. The flip side is sellers may finally be able to hold out for a little bit higher price, if they can play for more time. The latest Federal Home Finance Agency numbers from Uncle Sam shows July residential prices gaining 0.3 percent over June. And that’s a solid gain from March’s probable market bottom. Still, overall prices are down more than 4 per-

cent from July 2008 and off more than 10 percent from its peak in 2007. Closer to home, prices are doing even better. Florida is part of the South Atlantic region and July prices here grew by twice as much as the national average. Regionally, our prices shot up 0.6 percent from June and they finally are seeing steady, positive growth from early summer when prices were still dropping. According to the latest statistics, since January residential prices have shown some steady improvements. And with the residential real estate market improving and prices slowly picking up, the so-called buyers market could soon be ending. Local home sales still are getting a solid boost from that first-time buyer’s tax credit. However, that expires in November. As far as single-family homes go, the great deals and rock bottom low prices available over the summer may soon be gone as the inventory of homes and condos continues to get bought out. Watch Al Sunshine’s 4 Your Money reports Monday-Friday beginning at noon. You may find Al’s blog at <www.cbs4.com/4yourmoney>.

Gentle, firm approach works best with today’s youth BY KELLY CRAIG I blame it all on Rosie the Riveter. She’s the bandana-headed gal on those iconic World War Two posters. With biceps flexed she proclaims, “We can do it!” Her bulging muscles and that battle cry kept repeating through my mind Friday night when I tried to install a new kitchen faucet. Halfway through the seemingly impossible and very wet process I threw down my pliers and muttered “Okay, Rosie YOU do it then!” Understand that this isn’t just your ordinary kitchen sink. Oh, no! Back when the economy was thriving and we had a couple of bucks in our pocket, we decided to demolish our old kitchen and replace it with one that even Martha Stewart would envy. That means we have one of those fancy-schmancy gooseneck jobbers with the pull-out hose that’s so long, I could walk next door with it and clean my neighbor’s dishes (Note to neighbors: I love you guys, but forget it!). When the wand recently broke, I called the manufacturer and they sent me a replacement the very next day. I tore into the box that contained not just a new wand, but all sorts of other apparatus, too. Why did they send me all this extra stuff? There was the shiny wand and also a new hose, clamps, thingamabobs and hoozydids. This was a clear sign of complicated things to come. Like any smart wife, I delegated the task to my husband. After all, guys come with their own exterior plumbing, so this whole set-up should be more than familiar, right? That night, hubby dearest promised to install it after dinner, so I dutifully cleared out everything in the cabinet beneath the sink so he could get to work. The evening meal came and went and I waited for my better half to get at it. Not so much. Yeah, apparently he decided to go to bed and delay the operation until the next morning, literally leaving me high and dry for a few more hours (and they wonder why we nag). As I stood at the disabled sink I wondered aloud, “How hard could this be?” My inner voice answered, “Very hard. Go to bed.” I didn’t listen. Rosie the Riveter shut her up. First, I did something that I’d never done before: I picked up an instruction sheet and actually read it. Thank goodness for illustrations because most it was written in French. I soon realized that in order for the new wand to work, I had to

Life With kelly snake a whole new hose through the faucet, under the sink and clamp it onto the flow valve. (Another reason I decided to release my husband from this burden? Given the fact that he is six foot five, getting him to squeeze underneath a sink would be like asking a giraffe to fold himself into a cereal box). I followed the instructions to a tee. I then proudly turned on the water, only to have it gush out everywhere except from the wand. There was water on my face, clothes and the under-sink cabinet was flooded. My three male cats who were watching from the window ledge just shook their heads and gave each other that knowing look that said, “She should have waited to let him do it.” Undaunted, I put on my rain coat and for the next two and a half hours I pulled, clamped, re-clamped and pulled some more but the great floods just wouldn’t quit. My noggin was getting really sore after bumping it on the pipes below at least a half-dozen times. What was I doing wrong? I looked again in the shipping box and spied a tiny rubber o-ring and a miniscule plastic filter that had never been mentioned in the instructions. It was now two in the morning and I was ready to call it quits when in a last ditch effort, I dismantled the new wand and realized the o-ring and filter fit in there perfectly. Could it be that these tiny little pieces were the solution? I said a silent prayer and turned the handle, fully expecting one more I Love Lucy-esque malfunction. Instead, the water flowed out of the new wand perfectly and the cabinet below was dry as a bone. Success! My cats high-fived each other, relieved that I finally would be turning off the lights and they could go to sleep. I knew my husband would be getting up at the crack of dawn and I’d still be in lala land. I proudly left him a note next to the fully repaired faucet that read “Cause I’m a woman, w-o-m-a-n!” When I woke up he had gone to work, but he left a note of his own that read, “Great job. Now, can you take a look under the hood of my car? There’s some sort of rattling noise going on.”

Dodge Avenger a family sedan with a lot to offer Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS The Dodge Avenger has a lot to offer consumers looking for a mid-size family sedan; it’s nicely styled and well equipped, and with the optional V-6 under the hood it has more than enough power for every day driving and highway cruising. The Avenger looks a lot like its sibling, the popular Dodge Charger. It has the same aggressive exterior lines, the signature crosshair grille, muscular rear shoulders, large wheels and tires, a rear spoiler and chrome-tipped dual exhausts. Standard power is a 2.4-liter I-4 World Engine that produces 173 hp and 166 pounds-feet of torque, delivering 21 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. Also available is a 3.5-liter, 24-valve highoutput V-6 engine that’s coupled with a six-speed automatic transaxle to produce 235 hp and 232 pounds-feet of torque (16/27 mpg). A six-speed automatic transmission with

Auto Stick provides a quicker standingstart, while a stronger differential and lower overall top-gear ratio yield a quiet ride with improved fuel economy at highway speeds. On the road, the Avenger’s ride is smooth and quiet and the V-6 engine is very responsive both off the line and at highway speeds. Handling was surprisingly crisp and sporty and there was very little body roll in the corners. Avenger is offered in two trim levels — SXT and R/T — and the grill distinguishes the two; the SXT has a body-colored grille and the R/T’s is black-and-chrome. The R/T also has a decklid spoiler and fog lamps. Both models come standard with power mirrors, keyless entry, 60/40split rear seat, rear defroster, cruise control, tilt-telescoping steering wheel, tirepressure monitor and air conditioning. The R/T has standard anti-lock brakes, power heated mirrors, steering-wheel mounted audio controls, an upscale sound system with six speakers and 17inch tires and alloy wheels, while the SXT has 16-inch tires and steel wheels and a little more luxurious interior. The R/T also has more options available. The Avenger comes standard with such

Benefit your favorite charity with a donation from a surprising source BY JON KIDD AND KEITH OWEN Are we truly facing the Great R e c e s s i o n ? Whatever the answer, countless charities that rely on donor support to fulfill their missions within the community are suffering from the slowdown in charitable giving. This is a natural by-product of the current economic times. According to Philanthropy.com, 52% of charitable organizations saw a drop in donations in the second quarter of 2009. In addition to the present economic woes, it is also a fact that a history of philanthropic giving can take its toll over time, causing “donor fatigue” in donors of frequent and major gifts. As a result, more creative strategies are becoming attractive to donors; for instance, many charitably-inclined individuals are donating life insurance policies to non-profit organizations. Alternatively, an individual may consent to charity-originated life insurance. Philanthropist Dr. Sanford Ziff, Founder of Sunglass Hut International Inc, has long been an advocate of this form of charitable giving. A prominent donor in Miami, having gifted to such institutions as

the Sanford and Delores Ziff Opera House, Dr. Ziff has strong beliefs about supporting the charitable community. According to Dr. Ziff, given these difficult times, “There is no better time than the present to consider life insurance as a philanthropic donation.” Dr. Ziff further states, “So many charities should have considered life insurance benefit donations years ago; now look at the current situation, where charities have an even tougher time than many businesses. Charitable organizations can – and should – consider safe and valuable fundraising alternatives.” Donating a life insurance benefit to a favorite charity is a heartwarming – and very easy – way to give to your favorite cause. In fact, many donors are considering a newer means of leveraging their philanthropic donations through a strategy called “life insurance premium financing”, which allows them to make substantial donations, making use of life insurance as a monetized gift to a charity. Philanthropists can also avoid paying exorbitant life insurance premiums and utilize excess liquidity for donations today. Insurable interest (realizing a financial loss when the insured passes) typically must exist for a charity to enjoy the benefit from life insurance. Insurable interest between a charity and a donor can exist in the following examples: Donors of major gifts, Significant “founders” or frequent contributors over a period of time, Key leadership within a foun-

dation or nonprofit, Board members that bring valuable consideration to an organization, and Key fundraisers that bring in major gifts and significant donations in aggregate. Below, is an example of how Mrs. Smith utilizes her life insurance policy to benefit her charity, business and family: Mrs. Smith is a 79-year-old philanthropist, business owner, and matriarch with an insurable capacity of $20 million, which is comprised of her philanthropic involvement, business interests and household net worth. To utilize her excess insurable capacity, she seeks a loan to pay the premiums on a new Universal Life insurance policy with a face value of up to $20 million, naming her favorite charity, her business and her family as beneficiaries. This loan for the life insurance premiums may be repaid through the policy itself, giving her the option not to make payments. If Mrs. Smith donates a portion of her insurability to the charity in this way, she may receive recognition for a Planned Gift at the origination of the transaction, even though the donation may not be realized until she passes away. In certain circumstances, a living benefit or “life settlement” may result in the charity receiving a donation by selling a policy for a lump sum to a financial institution during the insured’s lifetime. It is important to note that many insurance carriers do not condone putting a policy in force or originating a policy if the

sole intent is to sell the policy on the secondary market; however, a policy owner’s circumstances may change and it is within their legal rights to sell a policy. Simply put, the charity could be the recipient of the life insurance benefit. Therefore, in the case of financing for life insurance premiums, the charity would receive a portion of the life insurance proceeds after the bank’s loan is repaid. The life insurance benefit ultimately replaces the future financial loss to the charity, which represents insurable interest between the charity and insured person. It is important that qualifying individuals and organizations carefully review risks versus rewards, as well as work with a specialized premium financing firm that has a respectable track record, solid references and a high level of experience and compliance within the industry. If you have further questions about the feasibility of life insurance benefit donations, Jon Kidd or Keith Owen, principals of Banyan Life Financial, may be reached via phone at 305-695-8052 or toll-free at 800828-ESTATE (800-828-3782). Their office is located right on the edge of Biscayne Bay at 1800 Sunset Harbour Drive, Marina Suite 3, Miami Beach, FL 33139. Expanding - Contracting BY PATRICIA C. FRANK Just as there is a,”Time to sow and a Time to reap”, there is a time to expand and a time to contract. There is a time in life to grow and acquire and there is a time in life to conserve and relinquish. The Universe and life run in cycles. Nothing is static or fixed. There are many internal character traits that you acquire as you grow. In most cases, you also acquire morals and a code of ethics. You acquire knowledge and you learn many things if you are fortunate; love, respect, empathy, right from wrong and many other things. There are also many material things that you acquire; toys, clothes, and all sorts of possessions. You learned that it is pleasant to receive things. It is exciting and fun. You learned that there is a joy in acquiring. But, unless you were taught, you might not have learned that there is a joy in dispensing and relinquishing things. You might not have learned the pleasure of letting go and giving away. Some people cannot give something away because they cannot tolerate the feelings of loss that may engender inside of them. They hold on to everything even when

it no longer serves them. When this is taken to the extreme, these people become hoarders. Their houses are crammed with things and are too full. They cannot give things away and they cannot throw things away. Fear may drive their behavior. They fear that they will not have enough of what they need when they need it. They never feel secure and they never have enough. Giving or throwing things away can feel like they are giving or throwing away part of themselves and their life. Releasing things requires making decisions and some people do not tolerate that stress very well so they avoid those stressful feelings by avoiding decisions. They might be more motivated if they could understand that if they never let go of the old they will not have room for the new. One of the hardest things to learn in life is that you are not defined by your possessions. There is a tendency to believe that if you acquire more you become more. Some people need the psychological high of buying and acquiring. They crave the excitement. The power to possess it makes them feel wealthy, important and rich. They would be pleasantly surprised to feel the excitement that also comes from relinquishing things. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. She can be reached at 305788-4864, 212 308-0309.

WEEKLY HOROSCOPES

MORTGAG E UPSIDE DOWN? NEED HELP?

Aries - You need to sort out your financial priorities right now. Someone has you flitting from one extreme to another as you try to make up your mind. It is really very simple when you decide to focus on your priorities, and not on risky ventures that come with a promises of huge future pay-offs. Taurus - Don't get too wound up in the "What do I want to do with my life" muddle you have been struggling with - it is a battle you can't sort out in one week, and this week it's just counterproductive to your mood. Indulge in a little pampering this week as soon as you get some time to yourself. Gemini - You feel like someone stuck a bas-

Call Walter at 305-606-5929

ket over your head right now and it's kind of hard to think. Well, the answer is - don't think so hard! The best form of meditation for you is the one where you totally blank your mind. Then ideas are free to float to the top. Give it a shot!

Libra - Take the credit cards out of your wallet and leave everything but spare change at home. You will be extremely tempted to buff up your wardrobe as a result of a careless comment from a friend, and there are less expensive ways to update your appearance. Wait until you calm down before going on a makeover tour.

Scorpio - Relationships may be somewhat stressful right now, likely because you are not eager to discuss your finances. Did you know some people find it easier to talk about their sex lives than their financial situation? You are not alone in your discomfort, but it is at the root of a misunderstanding that is easy to address.

Sagittarius - You will be getting news about your health or well being that makes it even more important that you start on a healthy diet and exercise regime. Your creative abilities could prove to be positive and healing to your general well being somehow - a painting class or musical interest helps you deal with stress.

CLASSIFIED AD

Cancer - Your leadership position could be under challenge from a friend or coworker who is not seeing the complete picture. Once you point out that the changes are good for them too, you'll see a lot more in the way of enthusiastic support. Be patient, they will come around.

Visit www.communitynewspapers.com and find out how to submit your FREE ad

Leo - You may have some fuzzy and strange feelings this week. You feel like you should be working, and can't, or feel you should be working harder. There is something missing in your home, something the family wants or you want for the family that you may not be able to afford just yet.

Aquarius - Looks like there is a parental tangle in your chart, with family on your side versus family on some other side. You are most likely to be dealing with some form of "in-law" trouble. Avoid making changes to your home right now, as they may prove to be more costly than you think.

Virgo - You may be in the middle of a course of study, formal or informal, when it dawns on you that you are a little over your head. Actually, the truth is that you have been pushing yourself too hard and you could really use a break from your task.

Pisces - You may be tempted to spill the beans and goodness knows you will have lots of opportunities to gossip this week. But you are better off letting this bombshell be dropped by someone else. Remember - the messenger does tend to get blamed for bad news.

Capricorn - Don't spend too much money on creative or playful projects this week. You are likely to find yourself investing big dollars in sporting equipment that lies around the garage the next few months. Try a used sporting goods store, or rent until you are 100% sure this new thing is "it".
