Sen. Gwen Margolis donates Michael Israel sculpture to Aventura Marketing Council

Sen. Gwen Margolis recently "re-gifted" an original Michael Israel sculpture back to the Aventura Marketing Council which gave her the sculpture in 1990 as she became the first woman to serve as president of any State Senate in the nation. Sen. Margolis displayed the sculpture featuring the distinctive "A" logo of the Council on her wall, so all visitors could see that Aventura was part of her constituency. "For many years, I was very proud to display that sculpture on my wall, along with other items depicting many areas of South Florida for which I so proudly represented for many years. In 2008, I decided to return home to run for Miami-Dade County Property Appraiser, and it was then I realized that this beautiful piece of artwork belongs 'back home'," said Margolis. Sen. Margolis has been in public service for over 30 years, elected to the Florida House of Representatives for three terms, and then elected to the Florida Senate where she chaired the Finance, Tax and Claims Committee, and later the Appropriations Committee, where she assisted in leading the state out of budgetary crisis. In 1990, she became the first woman Senate President. In 1993, Margolis returned to serve as a Miami-Dade Commissioner. She returned to the Florida Senate in 2002, serving for the past six years.

Sing along with Republic Federal Bank Republic Federal Bank continues to roll out the red carpet with innovative customer service. Recently the bank hosted a special evening event that featured a sing along followed by a presentation on "How to maximize your FDIC insurance." Dr. Rachel Lapidot, Sr. VP of Republic Federal mentioned, "We know that the economy is a concern for all our clients. We wanted to offer them a fun night, a celebration of Rosh Hashanah and specific tips to increase the amount of FDIC insurance by structuring their accounts according to FDIC guidelines." The evening began with sumptuous hors d'oeuvres passed by bank staff giving everyone the opportunity to get to know the bank officers. Then, each invitee received a red wooden wicker basket containing apple slices and a small dipping dish full of honey. Following the tradition that started generations ago, everyone dipped a piece of the apple into the honey and in a symbolic request for a good and sweet year. Bank representatives then presented the FDIC insurance program using the official FDIC video and instructed attendees how to use the FDIC calculator to increase their coverage. This information is available to the public on the internet at fdic.gov To conclude the evening, song sheets were

VIEWPOINT Can the Pentagon afford all that stuff? BY DANIEL M. SMITH For the past month, the military-oriented press has been reporting that defense industries do not look on John McCain as “their” preferred candidate. One can imagine why weapons producers might be nervous: not since Dwight Eisenhower has either major political party nominated a retired career military officer as its standard-bearer. (McCain served 23 years in the Navy; 20 years is the minimum to draw retirement pay.) In Eisenhower, the arms manufacturers were facing an experienced war commander who knew what armies, navies, and air forces needed to deter an enemy or, if necessary, fight and win. In short, Eisenhower could tell the necessary from the gold-plated “bells and whistles” whose only contribution to a piece of equipment was to drive up the price. And it was Eisenhower who, on departing the presidency, warned the nation of the growing power and influence of the “military-industrial complex” in the halls of Congress and - should the nation elect as president a person who is a complete stranger to military life - in the White House itself. Bill Clinton was that stranger, but what Eisenhower could not foresee was the changed international context within which the Clinton years neatly fit: the collapse of the Soviet Union in December 1991 and the terror attack of September 11, 2001. More than eight years after 9/11, although the United States has no military peer anywhere on the globe, the country has endured the high cost in lives and treasure of continual warfare. And in this context, the contest to become the 44th U.S. president is between a retired naval officer with combat experience (like Eisenhower) and more than 20 years in the Senate and a first-term U.S. senator who is Eisenhower's “stranger.” Nonetheless, there is little real difference between the two contenders with respect to funding the Pentagon's military equipment programs. For example, both decry wasteful spending, but what might be recouped - $10 billion or so - is but a fraction of what the Pentagon will receive in Fiscal Year 2009. On fighting terror, both candidates would send more troops to Afghanistan - as many as 20,000 in a smaller version of the “surge” that the Pentagon credits for the improved security in Iraq. While U.S. military commanders in Afghanistan say they can win with these additional forces, the

top diplomat and the senior general of our closest ally are telling their superiors in London that the war in Afghanistan cannot be won by the gun. But the economic global context is now shifting so rapidly and so negatively that whoever wins in November may be forced to curtail the Pentagon's acquisition plans. As recently as mid-September of this year, analysts who track defense spending were predicting that U.S. military contractors would be untouched by the turmoil on world stock exchanges. Indeed, three weeks later, Congress had voted for and President George W. Bush had signed the $612 billion defense authorization bill for current and future military programs, the $487.7 defense appropriations bill for actual expenditures in FY2009 (which began October 1), and the massive $700 billion economic bailout of Wall Street - so far with little effect. Looking at current events, I cannot help but recall what history tells us about the years between the two world wars. In the 1920s, when the “good times rolled,” Americans took the lead in trying to abolish war by sponsoring the 1928 KelloggBriand Treaty signed by 67 countries and the 1922 Washington Treaty limiting the size and number of major ships in the navies of the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany, Japan, and the United States. When the Japanese broke both treaties in the 1930s, no country was willing to try to enforce compliance with the applicable provisions of either document because the world was wrestling with the effects of the Great Depression. Within the decade, the Second World War was raging. Could it happen again? Yes. But the current economic crisis also presents the nation and the world with the pragmatic opportunity to make severe reductions in money spent on war and preparing for war. The economic imperatives are such that even the power of the military-industrial complex may be shaken enough to break its hold on Congress and the White House. -Colonel Daniel M. Smith (Ret.), a West Point graduate and Vietnam veteran is the senior fellow for Military Affairs at the Friend Committee on National Legislation. The bottom line is regulation BY KELLE LOUAILLIER It is no secret that today's politics are driven, by and large, by crisis. There are those like the “Social Security crisis” that were manufactured to support the case for privatizing Social Security and making the Bush tax cuts permanent. There are also those like water scarcity, natural disasters and hunger that legitimately demand our immediate attention and a deep commitment of resources. Unfortunately, all too often these commitments take a back seat to the crises of political invention. In the midst of today's financial crisis (which, bailout or no, is affecting us all) it is instructive to look at the relationship between these brands of crises, how one often begets the other and how this relationship must be undone if we are to make real, systemic progress. The energy crisis is but one example. During the 1980s and early '90s, energy corporations warned of a looming crisis of availability. They blamed government waste and the inefficiency of public utilities. In fact, there were no indications at the time that public energy utilities were unfit to provide for the nation's need. In time, energy utilities were privatized, and the laissez-faire ethos that facilitated the handover also facilitated the rewriting of laws to limit oversight and accountability. The result, as we all remember, was another invented crisis - an energy shortage - which led to rolling blackouts, rate hikes, and speculation that eventually cost Enron shareholders millions of dollars and thousands of employees their jobs. The banking industry of the '80s was no different, predicting a recession if the markets were not unshackled from the burdens of regulation.

And though the reasons for the ultimate Savings and Loan scandal are complex and disputed, most scholars agree that rapid deregulation and lax oversight paved the way for the greatest banking disaster since the Great Depression. Now we are in a far greater, foundational crisis, a trapping of this same cycle. This election year, the crisis rightly has candidates of all ideologies calling for accountability and reform. But we must be careful that the action we take now doesn't spark our next crisis. In the rush for answers, corporate interests are rushing to capitalize. The insurance industry, for one has already launched an aggressive campaign to limit its accountability to consumers. And in a political culture where a central function of government is to facilitate market opportunity, competition and innovation, the crisis has already caused an unprecedented consolidation of banking capital. Wealth concentration in this country has always pushed more and more people to the margins, and this debacle promises the same. To break the cycle of crisis, our newly elected leaders will need to take the accountability they speak of and demand it across all industries. But most of all, they will need to stop demeaning the value and place of government in society. Tough, effective regulation of big business is the means by which the greater prosperity of the country is protected against the narrow economic interests of a handful of transnational corporations. Whether our new leaders are initially up to the task or no, we'll have our work cut out for us in the months ahead. They will only manifest our will if we demand it. Kelle Louaillier is executive director, Corporate Accountability International. -<http://www.stopcorporateabuse.org/>

Incorporating marketing into your daily routine BY ELLEN GREENFIELD Everyday we take the time to care for ourselves, by brushing our teeth, eating, sleeping and getting ready for work. We must also do the same for our business. A business cannot survive if it is not monitored, cultivated, or just plain cared for on a daily basis. Remember there is always another business similar to yours that wants your clients! As business owners, we need to take time, everyday, to market our business. We need to develop new strategies that keep customers coming back while also bringing in new business. I know it may seem easier said then done, but it is a critical component for a successful business. Without it, your business will slowly die instead of grow. Alright, here goes, simple food for thought. The dreaded word that so many of us are reluctant to use, CHANGE. Ask yourself, exactly how open to change are you? Once you decide that you are open to change, here is what you need to do. First

things first, in order to change; you need to be consciously aware that you are making a change. It is time to think outside the box. I recommend setting aside a small amount of time, around the same time each day. Focus your energies on marketing activities. Be creative. Bounce ideas off employees or co-workers. Come up with the newest and greatest marketing strategy. In my 12 years of marketing, the lesson I have learned is that if you are not having fun, it will show in your business. During more difficult times, we must show our customers we need and value their business. Holiday time is upon us. Send out holiday cards with incentives to get customers in. Send gifts to your top clients. Show them that we need them just as much, or even more then they need us. By making your business vastly different then your competition, you will no doubt, win over the customer, each and every time. Remember Data Boutique can help you with all your marketing needs. Get a jump start on the New Year! Remember, the magic word is CHANGE. Are you up for it? Data Boutique 877-663-5536.

Leslie Stein takes the reins at Aventura's Eagle National Bank BY LYNN CARROLL

PROVOCATIVE QUESTIONS FOR PROVOCATIVE PEOPLE conservative, profitable and well capitalized.

LC: When did you become Eagle National Bank's branch manager in Aventura?

LC: How is Eagle National Bank of Miami weathering today's economic storms?

LS: I came on board in August. Eagle is very much a community bank, and I like that. Sometimes, working in large institutions, the customer becomes just another number. Here, every customer is a client, no matter how big or small their relationship.

LS: Eagle has a conservative, hands on lending philosophy and avoided much of the weak lending you read about in the papers. Because of that, our growth plans are possible because we are uniquely positioned to expand at a time when others have to shrink their operations and lending.

LC: What's your personal philosophy of customer service?

LS: I always say that "no" is not in my vocabulary, and we need to think outside of the box prior to giving a recommendation. I truly look at the client's best interest, and nothing is impossible. There is always a way to get a request accomplished. I'm willing to check out every avenue, even calling competitors and investigating their products and services to make absolutely certain that the client is getting the best deal.

LC: What's ahead for Eagle National Bank?

LC: What's your advice to people worried about the security of their savings?

LS: It's a good time for people to sit down and see how they can structure their money to be sure it's all covered by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. especially those who have more than $250,000. Security is also an issue.

FDIC insurance is important, of course, but the health of your bank is also an important consideration. Is your bank conservative? How are their key ratios? Do you know your banker? In that regard, I feel that Eagle National bank is a good choice because we are

Blues legend Joey Gilmore returns to Kitchen 305 at Newport Beachside Hotel & Resort Joey Gilmore is a true Blues and R&B master who incorporates new and varied styles in his music, performing original compositions mixed with traditional standards in his high energy live show. His tenor/baritone vocals belt out tunes with a loss abandon reminiscent of Blues legends from the 1940's and 1950's. This Bluesman's major influences are apparent without sacrificing his unique style. Joey's career's spanned over 40 years with performances throughout the U.S. and Europe. He's called South Florida home for the past 20 years. In 2006 he won the International Blues Challenge, the most distinguished and Internationally coveted award in all of Blues. Joey is a local favorite for sure. In August, Gilmore made an appearance at the Newport Beachside Resort’s Kitchen 305 which was so successful that he was asked back for a series of shows dubbed the "Joey Gilmore and Friends" series. Those who have seen Joey, know that he is one of the most gracious performers to ever take the stage, over the years making his stage available to many. You never know who'll show up to play. Last month Dr. Randy Pohlman, Dean of NSU's Business School showed up to Jam with Joey. "Bluesbobby"

Weinberg, South Florida Blues Society president, jumped in on harmonica and there was an amazing vocal performance by Aishya. Other series standouts have been Betty Padgett and Rita Wilburn. Look out for the upcoming Big City Rhythm & Blues Magazine's "Blues Showdown in the Sunshine State" tour featuring Joey Gilmore along with nationally acclaimed recording artists Billy Gibson, Dave Fields and David Hughes. Starting off in northern Florida on January 15th, and culminating on Friday, the 23rd, at Kitchen 305 this incredible group of musicians come together on one stage, bringing four distinct blues points of view from these four performers representing a sampling of both traditional as well as contemporary Blues guaranteed to electrify any crowd. They're true masters of their craft incorporating new and varied styles in their music, performing original compositions mixed with traditional standards. Kitchen 305 is located inside the Newport Beachside Hotel & Resort (16701 Collins Avenue ~ Sunny Isles Beach), where Joey returns this Friday, November 14th at 8:30 p.m. Admission and parking are complimentary. To reserve a table call 305-749-2110.

LS: Eagle has been a strong, customer-focused community bank since 1957. I am excited about our growth plans in 2009, such as expanding our branch network, increasing our lending to the community, and further strengthening our strong capital base. Mr. Robert Brookes, President and CEO, recently emphasized that our designation as a Bauer Four Star rated bank makes us one of the top rated banks in the country in safety and soundness. Our growth plan, with additional capital to support it, will allow us to remain so. The Aventura branch of Eagle National Bank is located at 2999 Northeast 191st Street. For more information, call 305-931-6883.

Leaky ducts waste more than just energy Two-thirds of families can save money on monthly energy bills by repairing leaky ducts With rising costs of electricity coming at a particularly difficult time for its customers, FPL is committed to operating efficiently and helping customers become more energy-efficient as well. A leaky duct system is one possible factor that can lead to a higher bill. In fact, two-thirds of all homes have leaky ducts that go undetected. Even if the air conditioning unit is in good shape, leaky ducts can cause air to escape, wasting energy and costing more money. Identifying leaky ducts is fairly easy to do, and with FPL's help, it is fast and affordable. FPL customers who call to schedule a duct analysis performed by an FPL energy expert receive a complete report of repairs needed and a list of independent contractors qualified to make the repairs. Additionally, FPL offers its customers incentives to help cover the cost of repairs.

FPL Energy Expert Ralph Ledesma makes a customer's home "airtight" using a metal doorframe, nylon curtain and blower fan along with a pressure gauge and grill cover to depressurize the home and identify leaks

FPL customers who want to learn more about FPL's duct system test and repair can visit fpl.com or call 1-800-DIAL-FPL.

ASK DR. RUTH BY DR. RUTH WESTHEIMER

Responses to lonely young man Q: I am 14-1/2, going on 15. I am writing in reference to a letter in your column from a 16-year-old who wanted to know how to get girls attracted to him. I have the same problem, except that I can’t get guys attracted to me. Even my best friend has been asked out. Maybe that reader and I should talk. A: I’m sorry, but I respect the privacy of those who write to me, so I don’t get into the matchmaking business. But the advice I gave to him also holds true for you. Stop worrying about getting a “date.” Instead, just concentrate on getting to know some young men as friends. If you have a big enough circle of male friends, you will definitely be asked out. But if any guy who meets you thinks that you are desperate, then he’ll think something is wrong and won’t want to ask you out. So just be yourself, make friends of both sexes, and have a little patience. Q: Your response to the 16-year-old boy was that it doesn’t take “lots of people” to cure loneliness - only one. I disagree

AVENTURANEWS.COM

with your advice. As far as friends and girlfriends go, the most attractive qualities a person can have are confidence and a positive attitude. Both of those can stem only from happiness within. If a person is unhappy with him or herself, no amount of people can fill that void. The boy needs to find out how to make himself happy, and then the rest will follow. People are attracted to happiness, laughter, positive attitudes and confidence - not insecurities and weaknesses. Building that happiness from within will be the key to all relationships. A: While I agree with you that happiness and confidence are important qualities, for someone who has never had a girlfriend or boyfriend it’s a little bit of a chicken-oregg situation. As long as they don’t have that special someone, they might have difficulties feeling happy or confident. When you’re a teenager, you’re supposed to be trying your wings out, gaining experience so that when you eventually do meet Mr. or Miss Right, you’ll be prepared. So if you can find that one person to go out with for a while, you’ll develop the confidence you need. The relationship might not last, but at least you’ll know how to react in another relationship when the time comes around. So make yourself available and use your teen years to learn what dating is all about, and then you’ll have the skills needed to develop a real relationship later on.

Laughter may be the last thing you think of when you are under stress, but it really should be the first. You are probably aware of the research that proves the benefits of laughter. Your body responds to it by increasing your heart rate and circulation. More oxygen and nutrients reach your organs. It increases breathing and it relaxes your muscles. It also releases endorphins which are happy hormones that make you feel good and decrease pain. It boosts your immune system and prevents disease and depression. There are people who have healed themselves of serious medical conditions by incorporating large amounts of laughter into their lives. There are no negative repercussions from laughter, only benefits. It is something you have complete control over. It is something you can do on your own. You do not need anyone else to make you laugh. Everyone has their own response to what is humorous. Some people do not even know what they find funny so they need to experiment. Given the guaranteed benefits of laughing, it is worth it for you to find out what tickles your funny bone. You have so many choices. Books, movies, cartoons and jokes promote laughter. Jokes produce laughter when something seems strange, slightly abnormal, shocking or a little frightening in

some way. However, because you sense that it is something that you would not take too seriously, you laugh. It is said that, “Laughter is an expression of a danger encountered but escaped.” It is also said that, “Laughter is heard farther than weeping.” If you cannot find things to laugh about you can always smile. A smile activates the centers of the brain that cause joy. There is a wonderful study about the power of a smile. Two nuns dressed the same were seated next to each other on the street with a collection plate on their laps, for people to put money in. One nun was told not to smile and one nun was told to smile. The nun who smiled received more than double the money her non-smiling counterpart received. A smile benefits the giver and the receiver. It enriches everyone. It makes every face more attractive. It is a natural beauty treatment because it uses fewer muscles to smile than to frown. It feels as good to receive a smile as it does to give one. Smiles are contagious. If you smile people will smile back. If you are feeling down about something smile for one minute and you will feel better. Your mood will respond to the physical expression of a smile. Try it. Look in the mirror and just smile. During the day think about things that make you smile. If you can, spend time with people who make you smile. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. Be a ‘health nut’

Condolence Baskets Available

Studies show nuts are good for you BY BARI AUERBACH If you’ve been cutting nuts out of your diet because you think they’re too fattening…well, that’s just plain nuts! According to Yale-New Haven Hospital, research shows that although nuts are high in calories and about 80 percent of their calories come from fat, nuts are nutrient dense! Nuts contain the essential fatty acids, linoleic and linolenic acids, which are vital for growth, healthy skin and hair, blood pressure control, immune response and blood clotting. In addition, the fats in nuts mostly contain unsaturated fats, especially monounsaturated fat. This type of fat does not raise blood cholesterol levels like saturated fats. Monounsaturated fats (MUFA) have the additional benefit of raising high-density lipoprotein, the “good” cholesterol. Nuts also provide one of the best natural sources of vitamin E, an antioxidant, and are rich in protein, dietary fiber, magnesium, copper, phosphorus, potassium, selenium and folate. Nuts and heart disease It’s long been known that dietary habits affect heart disease risk factors. Several large nutrition studies have associated frequent nut consumption, especially almonds, walnuts, hazelnuts and macadamias, with a decreased risk of heart disease of 30-50 percent. It’s thought that nuts can help reduce the build-up of plaque in blood vessels by lowering the “bad” cholesterol levels. The antioxidant qualities of nuts’ high vitamin E content might also contribute to the reduction of heart disease.

C & C SHIPPING CO. In addition to cholesterol, nuts may be helpful in controlling high blood pressure. The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet recommends 45 servings of nuts, seeds and dried beans per week as part of a diet to control hypertension. Nuts and obesity If you’re concerned about the extra calories and fat in nuts, you may be interested to know that in several studies, weight gain was not a problem when subjects were fed nuts within the context of a balanced diet. The investigators suspect that the high fat content in nuts was more filling so that people decreased their intake of other foods and that the fiber content inhibited some of the fat absorption. Additionally, it was suggested that the fat in nuts may be metabolized differently, but more research is needed to support that finding.

2008 Kia Sorento SUV has power, safety, refinement Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS The Kia Sorento is a midsize SUV with a lot to offer — sporty looks, excellent power and a long list of safety equipment. Sorento was refreshed just last year, so there are few styling changes for 2008. It continues with a clean, rugged look accented by a chrome surround grille with a dual bar insert, headlights with projection beams, front-end skid plates, and front and rear towing hooks. It’s offered in LX and EX trim lines, as well as the LX Sport Package and EX Luxury Package, and with either two-wheel or four-wheel drive. The interior retains the revised center fascia, gauge cluster and floor console, with wood- and metallic-finished trim that create a functional and comfortable cabin. The first- and secondrow seats are available in leather on the Sport and Luxury Packages and have

active front headrests and a rear seatback lever for easier adjustment of reclining. There’s also a standard front passenger central door lock, and steering wheel-mounted cruise control and audio controls on EX models. Sorento LX models have been given a boost in power in 2008 and now come standard with an all-new, all-aluminum 3.3-liter, 242 hp V-6 engine (15/20 mpg) mated to an electronically controlled five-speed Sportmatic transmission that lets you choose between the automatic or the manual shift mode. The new package will tow as much as 3,500 pounds, so it’s a good choice for boat owners who have to haul the family yacht to the launch ramp. If you own a bigger boat, check out Sorento EX models, which come standard with a larger 3.8-liter V-6 (and the same automatic transmission) and can tow up to 5,000 pounds. The 2008 Sorento comes with large four-wheel disc brakes and standard 16inch tires and wheels. It features bodyon-frame construction with nine crossmembers, a double wishbone front suspension and a five-link solid rear axle. A long wheelbase (106.7 inches) and wide

track (62.2 inches) yield a comfortable ride and good stability, while the short front and rear body overhangs allow the Sorento to navigate steep terrain. Sorento is available in both twowheel- and four-wheel-drive configurations. On two-wheel-drive models, power is directed to the rear wheels, while the 4WD offers a part-time or a Torque-on-Demand automatic full-time four-wheel-drive system, depending on the option package. The part-time fourwheel-drive system engages with the

turn of a knob for easy shift-on-the-fly operation, and has a transfer case equipped with a low range for the most difficult off-road situations. Prices on the 2008 Kia Sorento range from $21,465 for the base model to $26,665 for the Sorento EX 4x4. Ron Beasley is the automotive editor for Miami’s Community Newspapers.
